✨✧ Guru GuruKanguru ... CD
Brain/Made In Germany (Germany), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99 About March 7, 2025
One of the most important early albums from Guru Guru – a set of long-jamming tunes that virtually defines the term "prog rock"! Instrumentation is simple – mostly bass, drums, and guitar – but they're used in really unique ways as the album spins on – stretching out, opening up, and turning into something really different, thanks to the group's fresh musical vision, and the mighty production talents of Conny Plank! There's a balance here that really makes the record great – enough focus to keep things from ever getting sloppy, but a sense of openness that Guru Guru lost soon after this recording. Titles include "Oxymoron", "Immer Lustig", "Baby Cake Walk", and "Ooga Booga". CD

Guru GuruUFO ... CD
Ohr/Cleopatra, 1970. Used ... $9.99
Early Krautrock hugeness from Guru Guru – their epic debut, and a record that was one of the key calling cards of the German scene at the start of the 70s! At first glance, the elements are familiar – but there's a few nice touches in the studio too – yet the real energy of the group come from their fantastic musicianship, spun out on long tracks that make the core bass, drums, and guitar sound far more revolutionary than work from the UK scene at the time. That core is one that so many other groups were using with a blues rock into hard rock mode – but Guru Guru are already into something new and their own here – stepping out on long cuts that include "Stone In", "Girl Call", "Next Time See You At The Dalai Lhama", and "Der LSD – Marsch". ✨✧ GuruJazzmatazz Vol 2 – The New Reality ... LP
Chrysalis, 1995. Sealed 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Guru's second foray into the jazz/rap crossover world, with a huge amount of guest stars, and a little bit less of Guru. In parts, it actually seems to work better than the first one. Why? Because there's not as much of a forced effort to bring jazz and rap together in an obvious way, which leaves guests like Ramsey Lewis, Jamiroquai, Ronny Jordan, Donald Byrd, Kool Keith, Reuben Wilson, Bernard Purdie, and The Solsonics more room to do their thing. Includes "Lifesaver", "Looking Through The Darkness", " Respect The Architect", "Choice Of Weapons", "Count The Blessings", "Lost Souls", "Watch What You Say", and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed with hype sticker. Cover is bent just a bit at the bottom corners.)

✨✧ Guru GuruEssen 1970 ... CD
Svart (Finland), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really heady live performance from Guru Guru – and a great reminder of how much revolutionary music was being created at the start of the 70s with just the familiar elements of guitar, bass, and drums! With an instrumental lineup that small, you'd think the whole thing would sound very lean – especially away from any added tricks or prog processing in the studio – yet the music is tremendously fierce throughout – on these massive long tracks that are driven by the drums of Mani Neumeir, bass of Uli Trepte, and guitar of Ax Genrich – often with such instrumental power, lyrics aren't needed at all! And if you ever thought prog was about noodling, not hard rocking, this set will definitely change your mind – thanks to the tracks "Stone In", "Bo Diddley", and "Der LSD Marsch". CD

Brain/Revisited (Germany), 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A weird, but wonderful one from progressive German combo Guru Guru – the first record in a new direction for the group, with more players and more of a freewheeling, anything goes approach –flipping numerous genres on their head! The sounds range from tight, hard grooving guitars, to fusiony elements in horns and keyboards, and both mindbendingly complex and and straight up fun stylistic diversions throughout! The group's playing in a very odd mix of styles – from the smooth funky jazz of "Soba Soave Bossanova" or "Un Deux Trois", to the hard rock of "Nightbear", the tight guitar pop of "Tomorrow", to the wild art rock of "Tango Fango". Other titles include "Salto Mortadella", "L Torro", and "Banana Flip" and the suite "Das Lebendige Radio", with strolls from the sounds of German beerhalls to wild interpretations of first wave blues rock, and back again. ✨✧ Ohm GuruCinema ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Deeper soul than usual from Ohm Guru – a record that really has them getting past some of their simpler dancefloor tricks, and heading into some surprisingly rich territory! The main attraction here is vocalist Caterina Soldati – who sings in English on most of the tracks, with a soaring, soulful quality that almost gives the group a Swing Out Sister feel on these cuts – contemporary, yet steeped in older female vocal modes – a wonderful change, and one that fits the group very well. A few other singers show up too – Ivan Maffessoni, T-Mike, and Ninfa – and overall, they keep the feel of the other grooves pretty well. Titles include "This Is Your Life", "Once Again", "Someday", "Lady Magnolia", "Lazy Lady", "Nine To Five", "Suitcase", and "Soul In Chains". CD

Peter BrownDo You Wanna Get Funky With Me? ... LP
Drive, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $9.99
A super-huge moment for Miami funk guru Peter Brown – a record instantly recognized by the silhouetted cover image of a perky nude in a window on the front, and for the very famous title hit, "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me?" Despite its hit status, the record's actually a pretty nice example of Brown's talents – with plenty of spare cuts that feature keyboards, percussion, and synth – plus some occasional vocals by Betty Wright, Pat Hurley, or the vocal group Wildflower. Titles include "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me", "Dance With Me", "Without Love", "Fantasy Love Affair", "You Should Do It", and "For Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Master Wilburn BurchetteMind Storm ... LP
Burchette Brothers/Numero, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.99
The final album in a legendary run of records from 70s musical guru Wilburn Burchette – and a set that has a lot more tension and noise than some of his previous records! As with the record that came right before this one, Burchette has really moved to electronics and keyboards from his usual guitar – and he's also really upped his sense of distortion, which creates the "storm" effects that you might guess from the title – a swirling mass of dark-edged sounds that are peppered with these occasionally melodic moments that somehow make the larger palette of sound even that more sinister! The set features two side-long tracks – "Ceremony Within" and "Deep Dimensions". LP, Vinyl record album

A rare gem from the Finnish scene of the early 70s – a set of stretched-out electric jazz numbers that features some of the best players from the Love Records scene, coming together here with an even more open and creative feel! The group features Heikki Sarmanto on Fender Rhodes, alongside a lineup that includes Juhani Aaltonen on flute, Lance Gunderson on guitar, Pekka Sarmanto on bass, and Craig Herndon on drums – a combo who work with a very free-flowing sense of energy, one that's motivated most strongly by the guitar and keyboards, which themselves have a spacious sort of approach. The music's never too far out, and always has these warmly lyrical moments that are totally great – and quite unique in European fusion for the time – almost a hint of sentiment that really grounds the record, but never in a sappy sort of way. Strawberry Alarm ClockIncense & Peppermints/Wake Up (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Uni/Tune In (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
A pair of classics from Strawberry Alarm Clock – back to back on a single CD! First up is their classic Incense & Peppermints – dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes. Titles include the classic "Incense & Peppermints", the eight minute jammer "The World's On Fire", the instrumental "Pass Time With SAC", and the cuts "Paxton's Back Street Carnival", "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow", "Strawberries Mean Love", and "Unwind the Clock". Next is Wake Up It's Tomorrow – a great little second set from Strawberry Alarm Clock – much headier and tripped-out than their first! For the record, the group's not just working off the success of a previous single – and instead is really taking time in the studio to try out new ideas, musically, lyrically, and (most importantly) in the range of cool production techniques used on the set! There's still a warm harmony vocal approach on some of the album's best tunes, but they're also matched here with some more progressive guitar parts and fuzzier instrumental touches – in a way that brings a bit of darkness into the sunshine, and creates the wonderful sense of counterpoint that was always the group's strongest suit. Most tunes are nicely unfamiliar, and titles include "Curse Of The Witches", "Black Butter – Past, Present, & Future", "Soft Skies No Lies", "They Saw The Fat One Coming", "Nightmare of Percussion", "Tomorrow", "Sit With the Guru", and "Pretty Song From Psych-Out". CD also features single mixes of "Tomorrow" and "Sit With The Guru". CD

A really mindblowing collaboration between two of the most spiritual mainstream musicians of the early 70s – legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and spiritual jazz guru Alice Coltrane! The set came at a time when Santana was reaching for much deeper ideas in both his music and his personal life – and Coltrane turned out to be a perfect creative fit, as she'd already been down the path with her own music for years – and helps Carlos here find an incredible setting that really lets his new vision take flight! The album's a very collaborative effort – with Alice on piano, organ, and harp – but Coltrane also brings in some fuller arrangements on half of the tracks – really opening things up, alongside other musicians who include Jack DeJohnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass, Jules Broussard on soprano sax and flute, and Tom Coster on both acoustic and electric piano. Gang Starr at pretty close to peak level here on 1994's Hard To Earn – and rather than continue to ride the waves they made on the previous couple classic albums, Guru sharpens the lyrical tone just a bit – spitting some more incisive rhymes over apporpriately gritty soul jazz beats from Primo. Tracks include the classic "DWYCK" featuring Nice & Smooth – which is just about our favorite Gang Starr track ever, to be honest – plus "Speak Ya Clout" featuring Jeru and Lil Dap, "Mass Appeal", "Code Of The Streets", "Brainstorm", "Tonz O Gunz", "Suckas Need Bodyguards", "Blowin Up The Spot", "Mostly Tha Voice", "F.A.L.A.", "Now You're Mine", "Comin For Datazz", "Aiight Chill...", "The Planet", and more. Noo Trybe, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A later effort from Gang Starr that's just as dope as their earlier classics! By the late 90s, a lot of their of Gang Starr's peers of similar vintage were starting to fall off creatively and commercially – hence the title – but Guru and Premier would have none of that. Guru's rhymes are as dexterous and on point ever, and Premier's tried-and-true gritty beats and jazzy samples style is also at near peak strength. A bit underrated in the Gang Starr canon, but it's truly top notch work. Includes "You Know My Steez", "Rep Grows Bigga", "Work", "Make Em Pay" with Krumb Snatcha, "Above The Clouds" with Inspectah Deck, "Betrayal" with a sharp turn by Scarface, "The Militia" with Big Shug & Freddie Foxxx, "BI Vs Friendship" with MOP and more. 20 tracks in all! An excellent early album by funky guitarist Ronny Jordan! Back when everyone seemed to have lost their groove, Ronny emerged with a strong single-note style that reminded us a heck of a lot of Grant Green or Melvin Sparks. This record features some great backings behind Ronnie's guitar, arranged by either him, Ray Hayden, or Guru. ✨✧ Jack McDuffNatural Thing ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Amazing! This fantastic album by Jack McDuff is one of his best from the late 60's. The album's a massive set of grooves that pits McDuff's funky organ against some very heavy soul jazz arrangements by Richard Evans. Evans provides a beautiful set of grooves for McDuff to solo over, and the arrangements never get bogged down in any hokiness, or any sort of predictable sound. The set sparkles with imagination, and while it brings to light a lot of the whimsy and humor that McDuff adds to his solos in a live setting, it also adds a tightness that doesn't always show up on other records by him. Nearly every cut's a winner, and titles include "Let My People Go", "Who Stole My Soul?", "Funky Guru", "Ain't It?", "The Natural Thing", and the most amazing version of "Con Alma" you'll ever hear! Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

Columbia, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Near Mint- 3LP + 2CD Box Set ... Out Of Stock
The 10th in Columbia's essential Bootleg Series of archival unreleased Dylan – and for us, this one gets immediate placement among the best in the series – for finding the diamonds in the rough from the turbulent 1969-1971 period! It features a bunch of previously unreleased versions of songs from Self Portrait and New Morning – along with a handful of live recordings and otherwise unreleased gems. It's fascinating stuff, especially the songs from Self Portrait! That album is such a weird hodgepodge of styles, it was rejected by even the most ardent Dylan worshippers at the time. Here in blueprint versions, the songs have a ragged charm that really comes through in a big way! The set also has a bunch of alternate versions of songs from New Morning, a couple from Nashville Skyline and other odds and ends. It's bookended by incredible demos – opening with an acoustic guitar backed "I Went To See The Gypsy" and closing with a piano version of the eternally great "When I Paint My Masterpiece" – and it's filled with underappreciated Self Portrait songs like "Little Sadie", "All The Tired Horses", "Wigwam" and more in sparer settings, sans the overdubs of the LP version. Also includes alternate versions of New Morning material, including "Time Passes Slowly #1", "Working On A Guru", "If Dogs Run Free" and "New Morning" – some WITH orchestral or horn overdubs, as opposed to the stripped down Self Portrait versions. Other rarities from '69-'71 include a different version of "Country Pie", plus "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and "Highway 61 Revisited" with The Band at Isle Of Wight. 35 tracks in all – including a thick, beautifully illustrated booklet – with notes by one-time Self Portrait hater Greil Marcus! The sound here is really unique – a bit like some of the fuller American jazz sides at the end of the 70s, but cast out with colors, tones, and changes that are a fair bit different too. There's certainly funky and groovy elements to the album, but also a sound that's a bit more sophisticated too – not nearly as modern or out as some of Sato's other records, but with enough echoes of them to keep things interesting. ✨✧ Mike TaylorMike Taylor – Trio, Quartet, & Composer – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the overlooked genius of British pianist Mike Taylor – an artist who made a few key contributions in the late 60s, before turning up dead in the River Thames at the young age of 31! The core of the package is Mike's debut Trio album – a lost set of modernist piano jazz from the British scene of the late 60s – very much in the mode of the best American work of the time by pianists like Steve Kuhn or Don Friedman! Taylor's got an incredible touch on the keys – a post-Bill Evans mode that uses space as much a sound, and which paints in broad colors and tones that seem to glisten in their own unique place in the musical spectrum. The sound is free, but never too "out" – and the trio performs a number of strong originals like "Just A Blues", "Two Autumns", "Guru", and "Abena" – plus completely transformed versions of "Stella By Starlight" and "All The Things You Are". CD then also includes one quartet track from the album Pendulum – recorded with Dave Tomlin on soprano sax, in a 14 minute take on "Night In Tunisia". Then, the set really steps into a few surprises – as Taylor composed the music for a few Cream tracks (bassist Jack Bruce was an early jazz partner of Mike) – so the set features the early Cream recordings of "Passing The Time", "Pressed Rat & Warthog", and "Those Were The Days". Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto. Guruguru Brain (Netherlands), 2023. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of cuts from the contemporary underground in Singapore – new music, but work that often resonates with some of our favorite funky global tracks of the 60s and 70s! Think "sitar funk", and you'll start to get the vibe of the set – as there's some of that here, but plenty more going on too – all sorts of unusual hybrids of funky rhythms and exotic instrumentation – not totally retro, but often with some great old school funk elements in the mix! Titles include "Zapin Lucah" by Rebana Funk Brothers, "Prem Durga" by Sitar Funk Group, "Luna" by Hong Chungao Street Band, "Korkap Mestap" by Anak Anak Abu, "Morning Sex" by Golden Mile Band, "Great Wall Of Aria" by Maggot, and "Parkiu" by The Ugly Voices.
