Guru GuruEssen 1970 ... CD
Svart (Finland), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A really heady live performance from Guru Guru – and a great reminder of how much revolutionary music was being created at the start of the 70s with just the familiar elements of guitar, bass, and drums! With an instrumental lineup that small, you'd think the whole thing would sound very lean – especially away from any added tricks or prog processing in the studio – yet the music is tremendously fierce throughout – on these massive long tracks that are driven by the drums of Mani Neumeir, bass of Uli Trepte, and guitar of Ax Genrich – often with such instrumental power, lyrics aren't needed at all! And if you ever thought prog was about noodling, not hard rocking, this set will definitely change your mind – thanks to the tracks "Stone In", "Bo Diddley", and "Der LSD Marsch". CD

Guru GuruHinten (splater vinyl presssing) ... LP
Ohr/Cleopatra, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 32.99
A bold early classic from Guru Guru – exactly the kind of record you'd expect from Mani Neumier being billed as the "zonk machine" and "sounding being"! The record's an all-out jam, with a fair bit more frenzy than the usual prog album of the time – and some especially noisy moments, both on the guitars, and the drums – which are often filtered and processed, and all mixed and muddied up next to the vocals! But by "muddied", we don't mean that the record is sloppy at all – because Guru Guru sit at the production helm themselves, and work their own vision at a level to rival Can's complete use of the studio as an instrument. Titles include "Electric Junk", "The Meaning Of Meaning", "Space Ship", and "Bo Diddley". LP, Vinyl record album

Ohr/Cleopatra, 1970. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Early Krautrock hugeness from Guru Guru – their epic debut, and a record that was one of the key calling cards of the German scene at the start of the 70s! At first glance, the elements are familiar – but there's a few nice touches in the studio too – yet the real energy of the group come from their fantastic musicianship, spun out on long tracks that make the core bass, drums, and guitar sound far more revolutionary than work from the UK scene at the time. That core is one that so many other groups were using with a blues rock into hard rock mode – but Guru Guru are already into something new and their own here – stepping out on long cuts that include "Stone In", "Girl Call", "Next Time See You At The Dalai Lhama", and "Der LSD – Marsch". David AmramLatin Jazz Celebration ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
An early 80s look at Latin jazz from David Amram – with a who's who of Latin jazz players and stellar jazz musicians of other realms – including Paquito D'Riveria, Candido, Machito & Machito Jr, Brazilian percussion guru Duduca Fonseca, David Fathead Newman, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams and others others! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Includes "En Memoria De Chano Pozo, "New York Charanga", "Brazilian Memories", "Celebration", "Song Of The Rainforest" and more. CD

Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda ... CD
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

Guru's mic presence is as sharply on point as ever here, and the Primo production is also at peak precision. Step Into The Area really encapsulates just about everything we love most soul beats and samples era of hip hop. Masahiko SatoBridge Over Troubled Water (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Sony (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $54.99
A sweet little set from Japanese keyboardist Masahiko Sato – one that has him playing both acoustic and electric piano, amidst a set of larger backings from Jiro Inagaki and his Big Soul Media group! The sound here is really unique – a bit like some of the fuller American jazz sides at the end of the 70s, but cast out with colors, tones, and changes that are a fair bit different too. There's certainly funky and groovy elements to the album, but also a sound that's a bit more sophisticated too – not nearly as modern or out as some of Sato's other records, but with enough echoes of them to keep things interesting. Other players include Ryo Kawasaki on guitar and Shunzo Ohno on trumpet – and tracks include "Sniper's Snooze", "Serenity", "Guru", "Love & Peace", and "Somethin Goin On". LP, Vinyl record album

Mike TaylorMike Taylor – Trio, Quartet, & Composer – Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A fantastic tribute to the overlooked genius of British pianist Mike Taylor – an artist who made a few key contributions in the late 60s, before turning up dead in the River Thames at the young age of 31! The core of the package is Mike's debut Trio album – a lost set of modernist piano jazz from the British scene of the late 60s – very much in the mode of the best American work of the time by pianists like Steve Kuhn or Don Friedman! Taylor's got an incredible touch on the keys – a post-Bill Evans mode that uses space as much a sound, and which paints in broad colors and tones that seem to glisten in their own unique place in the musical spectrum. The sound is free, but never too "out" – and the trio performs a number of strong originals like "Just A Blues", "Two Autumns", "Guru", and "Abena" – plus completely transformed versions of "Stella By Starlight" and "All The Things You Are". CD then also includes one quartet track from the album Pendulum – recorded with Dave Tomlin on soprano sax, in a 14 minute take on "Night In Tunisia". Then, the set really steps into a few surprises – as Taylor composed the music for a few Cream tracks (bassist Jack Bruce was an early jazz partner of Mike) – so the set features the early Cream recordings of "Passing The Time", "Pressed Rat & Warthog", and "Those Were The Days". That's the lovely Alice Coltrane on the cover – given some great treatment inside by author Ashley Khan, who literally wrote the book in Impulse Records! There's lots more too – a great piece on Sun Ra, a look at contemporary production of vinyl, record guru/label owner John Corbett, a talk with Alan Braufmann, and a look at the scene in Berlin! But most of all is the presentation – as this is more of a journal than a magazine – done in a book-style package that's like Wax Poetics – squarebound, beautifully printed, with lots of full color images throughout! ✨✧ 18 Karat GoldAll Bumm ... CD
Long Hair (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A group that sound more like a 70s funk act from their name – but instead a great overlooked German act, with a sweetly compressed vibe that's different than some of the more familiar prog or psych of the time! The group shares members with Amon Duul II and Embryo, but sounds like neither of those combos – as they almost go for a glammish approach, with catchy lyrics and great production that squeezes the sharp guitars right up alongside the vocals – a lot more in the style of some of the breakout UK groups than most German material. There's a few more freewheeling moments, but even those cuts are short and compact – and the English language lyrics at points really give the set a universal sort of appeal. The record's got some wicked songwriting – of the sort that should have made it huge – and titles include "Flying", "Goldrush", "If My Guru Would Know", "Cool", "Star Infected", "Come On Monday", "Elektrik See Me In Your Dreams", "Dr Stein", and "I Am Just A Man". Columbia, 1974. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A really mindblowing collaboration between two of the most spiritual mainstream musicians of the early 70s – legendary guitarist Carlos Santana and spiritual jazz guru Alice Coltrane! The set came at a time when Santana was reaching for much deeper ideas in both his music and his personal life – and Coltrane turned out to be a perfect creative fit, as she'd already been down the path with her own music for years – and helps Carlos here find an incredible setting that really lets his new vision take flight! The album's a very collaborative effort – with Alice on piano, organ, and harp – but Coltrane also brings in some fuller arrangements on half of the tracks – really opening things up, alongside other musicians who include Jack DeJohnette on drums, Dave Holland on bass, Jules Broussard on soprano sax and flute, and Tom Coster on both acoustic and electric piano. The strings are sublime – as heavenly as on Alice's own records – and titles include "Angel Of Air Angel Of Water", "Bliss The Eternal Now", "Angel Of Sunlight", "Illuminations", and "Guru Sri Chinmoy Aphorism". Ibrahim's quite a different player, of course – but there's an open, exploratory quality to his music that's a bit unusual here – maybe not as rhythmically based as it is balanced between sound and silence – given very respectful company in the bass of Marcus McLaurine and drums of George Johnson. The group here is his Ekaya ensemble – who flesh out Abdullah's larger musical ideas in a really great way – providing this sensitive soul and spirit for his work on piano – which, after all these years, still echoes the rhythmic impulses that made him such a standout in the 60s – but which also has this matured approach to color and tone that's really wonderful – and beautifully illuminated by the group! Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto.
