GunGun ... LP
Epic, 1968. Very Good ... $28.99
Big, heavy late 60s British rock from Gun – with the raw, lumbering and bluesy (or better, bloozy) power trio core that's fleshed out in the studio with horns and other more sweeping touches! It's wild stuff, a genuine precursor to heavy metal in the searing guitars, thundering drums and bass, and wild eyed vocals – we have to wonder of the label thought it was too menacing and brought in the strings and horns to make it more approachable – but it actually just makes it weirder, which we love! Titles include their hit "Race With The Devil" plus "The Sad Saga Of The Boy And The Bee", "Rupert's Travels", "Yellow Cab Man", "It Won't Be Long (Heartbeat)", "Sunshine", "Rat Race" and"Take Off". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing. Cover has ring and edgew.)

"Spooks" is a nicely laidback tune – one that begins with almost Timmy Thomas-style drum machine beats, moving at a slow pace – while the lead vocal echoes Nina Simone a bit, before things fill in, and give the whole thing a more modern soul style! "Golden Days" has nice drums, rising horns, and a majestic sound that really fits both the lyric and the title! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Bob BertI'm Just The Drummer – My Time Behind Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks & BB Gun Magazine ... Book
HoZac, 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 26.99
Bob Bert is a lot more than just a drummer and this a lot more than a mere memoir, with tons of Bert's photographs from the early 80s NYC downtown scene, interviews and photos from his great 90s DIY zine BB Gun and lots more! Bert played in early era Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks and more, and after a brief and humble look back at his childhood influences, the book quickly turns into kind of a time capsule of the late 70s & 80s underground through his own eyes and camera. It includes snapshots of legends performing or hanging out at Mudd Club, Max's and CBGBs we'd probably never see without this book, behind the scenes pics with Sonic Youth in their early days and tales of Bert's time with Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Bewitched and other bands. Also vital are the compiled BB Gun pieces, where Bert interviewed and photographed artists as varied as Dead Moon, Lydia Lunch (who pens the forward for this book), Nancy Sinatra, Genesis P Orridge, Elliot Smith, James Chance and lots of others. Paperback, 210 page. Book

Tom BrowneTommy Gun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/FTG, 1984. Used ... $4.99
A funk, R&B and electro heavy set from trumpeter Tom Browne! There's a fair bit of beats on this set for Arista – no surprise, as Maurice Starr had a hand in the project – and the electro touches provide a real sense of contrast to some of Browne's earlier work! The best numbers have his trumpet blowing strongly over the top – cutting the electronics with his warmer solo spots – but even the more rhythmic tunes have their own sort of charm too. Browne is on trumpet, flugelhorn, synths, drum programming and vocoder vocals, with Starr on keys, synth, guitars, drums and backing vocals, sax by Maceo Harrett, percussion by Carlos Gomez and others. Siedah Garrett sings on the track "Secret Fantasy" – and other titles include "Wee Out", "Station Break", "Free & Easy", "Loop", "Tommy Gun", and "Hit Man". This 2011 Funky Town Grooves edition has 2 bonus tracks: "Loop (Extended Remix)" and "Secret Fantasy (12" Version)". CD

Mike CooperOh Really/Do I Know You/Trout Steel/Places I Know/Machine Gun Co (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Monster funk from this James Brown Band offshoot! Pee Wee Ellis is the main soloist on both cuts – and he really blows the top off on "There Was A Time"! The tune simply leaps onto wax from nowhere – blasting out in a fast-riffing version of the James Brown hit, with Pee Wee laying out the main solo in a mode that shows that the JB organization was doing fine before the appearance of Maceo. "Rabbit" is a solid groover too – done later by the JBs, but sounding rawer here in this version, which begins with some scattershot drums, and a really nice bass popping groove! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Starday/Nashville, 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nobody put together a truck driving country record better than the Starday/Nashville label in the 60s – and this sweet little set is a perfect tribute to their talents! The set's full of cool, groovy, truck-themed tunes from the indie underground of the time – not the polished pop work of the big labels, but close-to-the-ground cuts from a company who really gave a lot of new ideas a chance – ideas, in this case, that had a lot to do with the rising role of the truck driver, and all the complications of interstate travel! There's plenty of nicely obscure tunes here – and maybe a few that you'll know from other collections, but which are more than appreciated in this company too. Titles include "When I Come Drivin Through" by The Willis Brothers, "Big Mack" by Johnny Bond, "Truck Drivin Son Of A Gun" by Red Sovine, "Convoy In The Sky" by The Willis Brothers, "The Gear Jammer & The Hobo" by Red Sovine, "That's Truck Drivin" by Slim Jacobs, "Man Behind The Wheel" by George Morgan, and "Thunder On The Road" by Johnny Bond. A millennial classic from Erykah Badu – a record that came along right as the current century was starting up, to show a soulful path that would keep things strong for many years to come! The album grabbed a bigger audience than Erykah's first, but still kept things strong – really focusing in on that amazing vocal style that made the singer such a unique talent – and which always had edges that were sharper, and runs that were deeper, than some of her contemporaries who might be able to trick a phrase with a bit of spirit, but never deliver the whole thing in the way that Badu can! Themes are both personal and hinting at her political turns to come – and titles include "Kiss Me On My Neck", "Didn't Cha Know", "My Life", "AD 2000", "Bag Lady", "In Love With You", and "Booty". Apple (UK), 1968. Used 2CD ... $6.99
The Beatles at their late best – 1968's self-titled set, now immortalized as The White Album! The White Album capped offed a period of intense creativity for the band with a double that's as freewheeling as anything they'd ever release. It's got raw rockers with wry lyricism, tender acoustic balladry, psych blues jams and some flat out weird bits. As was always the case, John's and Paul's songs cover the majority of the sides, but The White Album also features what's arguably George's most vital moment as a Beatle with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Other tracks include "Back InThe USSR", "Dear Prudence","Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", "Martha My Dear", "Rocky Raccoon", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Julia", "Yer Blues", "Sexy Sadie", "Helter Skelter", "Revolution 1", Good Night" and more. JG/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Very rare, very obscure material from this important free jazz trio of the German scene in the 70s – a set that features one long performance originally issued on the JG label, despite the FMP-like image on the cover – plus two more tracks from the same year that appear here for the first time ever! "Just For Altena" offers up the power trio at their best – very freewheeling piano from Fred Van Hove, drums from Han Bennink, and tenor from Peter Brotzmann – with intensity that may well surpass the Machine Gun years, and an understanding of each players strengths that means that there's almost no tentative moments at all in the improvisation! "Filet Americain" and "ICP No 17" are from earlier in 1971 – and showcase a different, more sonic side of the trio – some tones that are at the farther end of hearing, which ruminate then blossom into bolder statements, but still often with a very abstracted approach to each instrument. Great stuff – and every bit as essential as any of the better-known Brotzman recordings of the time! CD

The mighty Errol Brown is at the controls in Treasure Isle – reworking some wicked rhythms played by The Revolutionaries – all with the stripped-down vibe of the best underground dub from Kingston in the 70s! Echo is heavy on the bottom-end of the sound – which makes the grooves ebb and flow in a way that's got a heck of a lot of sonic power – while some of the more isolated instruments over the top step along in a more melodic way – sometimes a bit of organ, guitar, or bubbling bass, depending on the track! The presentation is as stripped-down as the music – but at that mysterious level that only makes the record such a cool little treasure – with tracks that include "Bond Street Rock", "Ranking Marshal", "The Gun Court Dub", "Ital Stew", "Super Tracks", "Dread At The Controls", and "Ghetto Dub". Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". Westbound/Ace (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The lost third album from CJ & Co – that totally groovy, totally tight group who were one of the best things going on Westbound Records in the late 70s! CJ & Co had a groove that was just right for the new club world of the time – but they also had a sharp instrumental approach that was much more tied to the Detroit funk of early 70s Westbound – and their sound was given a fantastic push and polish by the production team of Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey, who really keep things sounding strong throughout! These aren't leftover cuts, or the kind of material that was rejected at the time – and instead, the whole package has a quality level that really matches the classic Devil's Gun record by the group – a funky disco spectacular all the way through. Titles include "Is Your Love Life Better", "Ain't It Amazing", "Rainbow Music", "Brassband", "Get Lucky", "Rainmaker", "The Golden Touch", "Can't Believe You'd Break Your Promise", "Let Them Talk", "Boogie Love", and a rare "original mix" of "Devil's Gun". The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". The added electric presence of the instrument really brings a lot to the usual Mancini charts here – creating some cool spacey and soulful moments you wouldn't expect, and some of those surprising Mancini funky bits that show up on records from the time! The set features a great medley of Barry White's "Love Theme" and MFSB's "TSOP"; classic soundtrack material like "The Thief Who Came to Dinner", "Theme From White Dawn", and the great sample track "Theme From The Girl From Petrovka" – plus the tracks "The Sex Symbol", "Hangin' Out", "Song For Anna", "The Stripper", "Dolce" and "The Entertainer". Theme From Z is cool Mancini work from the start of the 70s – a record that offers a nice step forward from his scoring styles of the 60s, with a slightly orchestral feel as well! The arrangements here are full, but still have a nice sort of focus – and include solos by players like Mancini on piano, Jimmy Rowles on electric calliope, Dick Nash on trombone, Ted Nash on alto, and Art Smith on recorder. Some of the best tracks have a groovy feel that really fits the date of the record, while others have a more traditional soundtrack approach – and tunes include "Theme From Z", "Airport Love Theme", "Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head", "A Man A Horse A Gun", "Patton Theme", and Jobim's "Love Theme From The Adventurers". CD

By this point, George Clinton and the P-Funk team were on top of the world! The record is a masterful dose of slick mothership jamming – perfectly woven together with that tightly compressed style that really served Clinton's production work well. The tracks are long, but never too loopy – and thanks to help from the Bernie Worrell, Jerome Brailey, Gary Shider, and the Horny Horns, the album stays very tight instrumentally all the way through! Loads of Parliament classics, including "Bop Gun", "Funkentelechy", "Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk", and the massive "Flash Light", which we've heard a million times, but which never ceases to amaze us! Gil Scott-HeronReflections ... LP
Arista, 1981. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its politics have certainly dated by now – but the real strength of the album are the jazzy numbers, written in Gil's beautiful righteous style forged in the soul jazz underground of the 70s. These include the stellar "Is That Jazz?", a contemplative track about the future of the art form, a mellow version of Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands", the moody "Storm Music", and "Gun", a good groover with a message about the right to bear arms. Capitol/Vivid (Japan), 1978. Used ... $24.99
Massive work from Sun – a tightly crafted batch of dancefloor funk that reminds us of some of our favorite work from Fantasy Records at the time – especially some of the more righteous groups that blended equal parts jazz and soul! Sun's got a tightness here that's amazing – right up there with Earth Wind & Fire at their best, but not as commercial overall – and instead, always delivered with a nice sense of righteous energy! The set kicks off with the wicked "Sun Is Here", a guitar-driven groover with a very famous sample riff – and a sound that's somehow more stripped-down and jazz funk-driven than a lot of the group's other tunes. Other cuts are pretty great too, with lots of warm bubbly soulful moments – and titles include "Dance", "Long Drawn Out Thang", "I Had A Choice", "Sun Of A Gun", and "You're The One". CD

Brit James Taylor is a master of the keys – expanding his sound over the years from funky Jimmy Smith/Jimmy McGriff type grooves, into a mode that ecompassed a lot of the changes in sounds that took place during the 70s. This excellent set gives you a great look at the rich range of Taylor's talents – and includes tracks that were on some of his albums for the Acid Jazz label, plus rarer bits from singles that are long out of print. A real classic from the 70s AM soft rock/soul scene – and a record that's surprisingly rewarding this many years later! Gino's working here in territory that's a bit similar to contemporaries like Paul Williams or Nick DeCaro – material that's well-penned, softly sung, and produced with a spacious approach that's studio, but never too slick overall. There's a personal sense here that's quite surprising, especially given Gino's look on the cover – and the record's a fair bit hipper than we might have admitted back in the 70s (or even the 80s and 90s!) Amazing work from this seminal group on the FMP scene – a quartet led by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, but equally balanced between the saxes of Evan Parker, bass of Peter Kowald, and percussion of Paul Lovens! We're not sure how much to take the "nails" in the title seriously, but it does sound as if Schlippenbach is playing prepared piano at times – or perhaps his command of the keyboard is just so strong, he can make other-worldly elements come from the instrument whenever he wants! Much of the music has a full-on FMP intensity – that non-stop, sonically adventurous quality inherited from Machine Gun – spun out over three great live improvisations, titled "Range", "Black Holes", and "Three Nails Left". A surprisingly great pairing of talents – the post-Animals Eric Burdon on vocals, and early grooves from Cali funk legends War – coming together here in a blend that still holds up beautifully after all these years! Burdon was already getting pretty soulful on the last few Animals albums on MGM – and he really advances that style here when working with War's great grooves – some of the grittiest, nastiest, most stretched out work of their career – especially on some of the album's nicely long tracks. A treasure trove of reggae, rocksteady, and blue beat work from the late 60s – all of it originally released under the guidance of producer Dandy – also a reggae artists of his own, with roots in Kingston, and working here with a big impact on the UK scene! The albums here were all originally issued on the Down Town imprint – a small sub label that Trojan Records gave to Dandy for his own projects – which resulted in the two killer compilations Red Red Wine volumes 1 and 2 – a great overview of some of the strongly soul-influenced sounds that were bubbling up in London at the time. Dandy himself is one of the key artists on the collection – and titles include "Move Your Mule", "I'm Your Puppet", "Reggae In Your Jeggae", "Got To Come Back", "Raining In My Heart", and "Can't Get Used To Losing You" by Dandy – plus "Red Red Wine" and "I'm Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got" by Tony Tribe, "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Love Me Tonight" by Audrey, "Lover's Question" and "Spreading Love" by Gene Rondo, "Lead Them" by Desmond Riley, "Games People Play" by The Israelites, and "Song Byrd" by Lyndon Johns. CD2 begins with the Trojan classic Blow Your Horn by Rico & The Rudies – a classic early album from Rico – the legendary Jamaican trombonist who's gotta be one of the few people who can pose with his instrument and still look pretty badass overall! That quality also comes through in Rico's music – a famous lead trombone sound on countless Jamaican recordings from the ska years onwards – really given some great time here in the spotlight on a set of tunes that soar out with lots of rough rocksteady rhythms! Rico blows strongly and soulfully – on titles that include "Rico's Message", "Niyah Man", "Caribbean Serenade", "Jumping The Gun", "Mighty Dan", "Session Begin", "Biafra", and "Quando Quando" – and the album also features some guest appearances on "The Lion" by Dandy, and on "Muma Muma" by The Israelites. Last up is Your Musical Doctor – a full album with Dandy as the lead singer on his own – with titles that include "Touch Of Poison", "Everybody Loves A Winner", "Gumption Feeling", "Meeting Over Yonder", "Here I Go Again", "Come On Home", and "Run Girl". 2CD set features 51 tracks in all – with a few more bonus tracks too! Westbound/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A massive celebration of the legendary Westbound Records – a Detroit record label started at the end of the 60s, and one that took the Motor City into much heavier territory than Motown! Westbound was the initial home of both Funkadelic and Ohio Players – and the imprint had a great ear for the kind of deeper, funkier side of the soul music spectrum – both with big groups like the two we just mentioned, and with a host of lesser-known singers and combos too! This package brings together two dozen key singles on Westbound – but not the giant hits, and instead the kind of songs that illustrate that key special touch that really set the company apart from the rest – even as the 70s moved on, and elements of club music started coming into their groove. Titles include "I Love You" by The Motivations, "A Letter From Vietnam" by Emanuel Lansky, "Everything Is Going To Be Alright" by Bill Moss & The Celestials, "Ain't No Telling" by Houston Outlaws, "Yes I'm In Love" by Unique Blend, "Why Not Start All Over Again" by The Counts, "I've Changed" by The Magictones, "I'll Bet You" by Funkadelic, "Music Man (part 1)" by Pleasure Web, "Get Up Off My Mind" by Denise LaSalle, "Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms" by Detroit Emeralds, "Devil's Gun" by CJ & Co, "Get Ya Some" by Melvin Sparks, "Alvin Stone" by Fantastic Four, "If You Love Him" by Junie, "Calling Planet Earth" by Dennis Coffey, "Crazy Legs" by Donald Austin, and "Funky Worm" by The Ohio Players. But Fashion also had a quality that did them one better – they recorded and issued work that originated in the UK – documenting a reggae scene that had grown to be as important as Kingston by that time – thanks to trans-Atlantic flows of vinyl, and a fair bit of immigration from the West Indies too! The music here is strongly in the styles that really exploded in London during the stretch – and early digital dancehall material is offset by sharp-edged jungle rhythms, and warmed up by some lover's rock too – but always with a quality that's earthy, and very close to the streets. On this double LP Prince Paul delivers one of the funniest and most original hip hop projects we've heard in a long while. He puts together a hip hop b-movie, along the lines of Lightning Rod's legendary "Hustler's Convention." "Prince Among Thieves" goes through the journey of the journey of an MC, Tariq (played by Breezly Brewin' of Jugganauts), to get signed. And along the way he encounters all the usual subplots of drugs, sex, violence, and betrayal. In addition to Breeze, Prince Paul uses whole batch of MC's (including Sadat X, RZA, Biz Markie, Everlast as Officer Bitchkowsky, and Kool Keith as a gun-selling ex-marine) and industy people form Rodd Houston to Wendy Day. Prince Paul is definitely one of hip hop's unsung creative forces – from his start with Stetsasonic, to his work with De La Soul, to Resident Alien on his short-lived Do Dew Man label and the Gravedigga's and Psychoanalysis projects. Dead Moon's third album – bursting into the 90s with Defiance – a record that arrived when some fellow Pacific Northwest underground rockers were getting ready to be flung head first into the mainstream, but DM remained defiantly underground! Even though this third album, they were garage veterans with root in the late 60s. It's amazing who raw, primordial and true to their own style. It's like they got gnarlier as they went on rather then going pop. Includes "Not The Only One", "Dagger Moon", "Revenge", "Johnny's Got A Gun", "Unknown Passage" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

T Neck, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very weird, but very beautiful album by the Isleys – one in which they move into a folksy rock groove, and play acoustic guitars in long spiralling soulful versions of some of their favorite rock hits! The sound's a bit like Terry Callier or Bill Withers, but it's also still got that sexy Isley groove to it – and although the cuts aren't all out funky, there's definitely a lot of funk in the way that they're set up! We love the complexity of the Isleys at this point – really willing to take a chance like this, with results that come out beautifully. Titles include a great version of "Love The One You're With", plus "Machine Gun", "Ohio", "Spill The Wine", and "Lay Lady Lay". LP, Vinyl record album

Janet Jackson soars into the 21st Century with another one of her instant classic albums – the kind of sets that had her sounding maybe even sharper and more consistent than her brothers were at the time! Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are still on board at the helm, and the tunes definitely have the snappy, catchy vibe that works so well with Janet's vocals – but also fresher and more changed up for a new generation of R&B. Titles include "You Ain't Right", "All For You", "Come On Get Up", "Doesn't Really Matter", "Better Days", "Son Of A Gun", "China Love", "I Trust A Try", "Would You Mind", and "Feels So Right". Ahhhhh . . . CD

Incredible early singles from the mighty Joe Tex – numbers Joe cut for the Dial label from the early-to-mid 60s – with a bunch of lesser known gems from before his mid decade breakthrough! ✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD

Apple, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The Beatles at their late best – on a self-titled set that's been long immortalized as The White Album! The White Album capped offed a period of intense creativity for the band, with a double set that's as freewheeling as anything they'd ever release. ✨✧ VariousRevolution – Underground Sounds Of 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1968. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing sounds from the morning after the Summer Of Love – a time when the UK scene really woke up to some vast musical changes – a good number of which are represented in this overstuffed set! The package does a great job of catching that special shift in modes from groups who might have been straighter mod, rock, folk, or R&B just a year or two before – and who now are really letting their hair down (and probably growing it too!) – finding confidence to work out loads of new ideas of their own, and really set the scene for musical modes that would shape the world for the next decade or so! A few of these artists cracked the charts at the time, some might hit fame in the 70s, but most of the acts are those who were part of an underground hip scene from the moment they first recorded – and still stayed that way for many decades to come. The mix of modes here is great – and as always with Cherry Red/Esoteric, there's a nice booklet of notes that really illuminates the music. 52 tracks in all – with work by The Moles, Tomorrow, Caravan, Ten Years After, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Van Der Graaf Generator, Second Hand, Eyes Of Blue, Eclection, John Martyn, Love Sculpture, Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, Jethro Tull, Giles Giles & Fripp, Pretty Thinbs, Dave Mason, Barclay James Harvest, The Aquarian Age, The Move, Gun, Deep Purple, The Bystanders, Dantalian's Chariot, Blonde On Blonde, Eyes Of Blue, and many more. Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD

Forget the silly cowboy costume on the front cover – because this is a heck of a great album! Bo might have gotten saddled (no pun intended!) with a silly gimmick for the title and image of the set – but the album's one of his best from the early Chess years, and features a rip-roaring batch of tracks that really cut it up in his classic scratchy guitar mode of the time! Lyrics are great – nearly all originals by Bo himself, with that hip swinging, and hard-wailing approach that was always a lot of fun – and cuts include "Gunslinger", "Diddling", "Cheyenne", "Cadillac", and "Doing The Craw-Daddy". A little bit funky, a little bit moody – and a great lost score from one of our favorite Italian composers! Gianni Ferrio's one of the madder geniuses of the Italian scene of the 70s, and this reissue's a great look at his complicated approach to what should be a simple cop/thriller set of themes. The record's got some nice funky bits – like "La Gabbia", "Morning Blues", "Un Giorno In Piu", and "Labrinto" – but it's also got a lot of excellent mellow cuts that mix organ, tight slinky drums, subtle bass, and other great 70s electric elements into a killer batch of themes and instrumental moments that are totally fresh. A funky album – but one that we love best for the mellow tracks! Sure, the Isleys could wear flashy suits and play some heavy guitar – but honestly, what we really love them for here are the laidback, loving tunes they do so well. The album includes 2 of their greatest ballad tracks ever – "Voyage To Atlantis" and "Footsteps In The Dark" – plus the midtempo tune "Tell Me When You Need It Again", another great track that almost has the same power as the other two. The second album by Made In Brasil – a great San Francisco combo from the 70s, with a flair for jazzy Brazilian tunes that's every bit as great as groups from Rio or Sao Paulo at the time! The group at this point features keyboardist Claudio Medeiros – who really adds a lot to their sound with his tight work on organ, clavinet, and electric piano! A wonderful version of the famous Henry Mancini score – arguably better than the original soundtrack for the TV show! Contemporary, 1959. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A crackling set of crime jazz from drummer Shelly Manne – a follow-up to his first set of work from the Peter Gunn soundtrack, and arguably even better than the first! Manne's working here with a great combo that includes Victor Feldman on vibes, Joe Gordon on trumpet, and Richie Kamuca on tenor – playing with a warmly raspy tone that gives the work a quality that's even more soulful than the Henry Mancini originals that inspired the set, and which is perfectly matched with the trumpet of Joe Gordon. There's a depth here that goes way beyond the simple soundtrack roots of the material – and the arrangements on the set are proof that Manne was one of the hippest-thinking jazz cats on the mainstream LA scene of the time. Bold, brash scoring from Ennio Morricone – a soundtrack that's a bit more dramatic than some of his better-known westerns from the time, done here with full orchestrations and a mix of haunting themes! The story is set in 18th century Mexico – and Morricone's music has some slight western elements, but a lot more straight dramatic ones as well – tense moments of action, and quieter, subtler points of personal interaction. Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
One of the most experimental records we've heard from the prog era – and that's saying a lot, given the contemporary vibe of the time! Gunter Schickert here creates a marvelous blend of guitar sounds and space – even more stretched out and sonically-directed than any of the work on the Brain label at the time – in ways that almost preface Glenn Branca, and a host of other early 80s New York experiments we can think of! At times, Schickert's almost a one man Sonic Youth (from the early days) – although with perhaps a bit less full-on blast, as a solo artist – but at other points, the guitars are even more abstracted, and stretched out in these minimalist modes that are highly rhythmic, and extremely hypnotic!
