GunGun (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Epic/Real Gone, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.98
Big, heavy late 60s British rock from Gun – with the raw, lumbering and bluesy (or better, bloozy) power trio core that's fleshed out in the studio with horns and other more sweeping touches! It's wild stuff, a genuine precursor to heavy metal in the searing guitars, thundering drums and bass, and wild eyed vocals – we have to wonder of the label thought it was too menacing and brought in the strings and horns to make it more approachable – but it actually just makes it weirder, which we love! Titles include their hit "Race With The Devil" plus "The Sad Saga Of The Boy And The Bee", "Rupert's Travels", "Yellow Cab Man", "It Won't Be Long (Heartbeat)", "Sunshine", "Rat Race" and"Take Off". "Spooks" is a nicely laidback tune – one that begins with almost Timmy Thomas-style drum machine beats, moving at a slow pace – while the lead vocal echoes Nina Simone a bit, before things fill in, and give the whole thing a more modern soul style! "Golden Days" has nice drums, rising horns, and a majestic sound that really fits both the lyric and the title! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A millennial classic from Erykah Badu – a record that came along right as the current century was starting up, to show a soulful path that would keep things strong for many years to come! The album grabbed a bigger audience than Erykah's first, but still kept things strong – really focusing in on that amazing vocal style that made the singer such a unique talent – and which always had edges that were sharper, and runs that were deeper, than some of her contemporaries who might be able to trick a phrase with a bit of spirit, but never deliver the whole thing in the way that Badu can! Themes are both personal and hinting at her political turns to come – and titles include "Kiss Me On My Neck", "Didn't Cha Know", "My Life", "AD 2000", "Bag Lady", "In Love With You", and "Booty". Lionel Richie come back! All is forgiven! We'd said bad things about you for years until we heard this funky groover – The Commodores' first album, a tasty bit of funk that almost makes us want to forgive you for all of your later crimes! The whole thing's pretty funky all the way through – with a strong southern groove, touched with a bit of a Sly Stone party funk mode. Includes the killer break classic "The Assembly Line", which feels like it was lifted right off one of Sly's late 60s albums for Epic – plus "The Bump", "Machine Gun", "The Zoo", and "Gonna Blow Your Mind". Arrangements are by James Carmichael and Gloria Jones, who also did the production – and the album's a long way from "Three Times A Lady", trust us! CD

✨✧ Mike CooperOh Really/Do I Know You/Trout Steel/Places I Know/Machine Gun Co (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Bob Bert is a lot more than just a drummer and this a lot more than a mere memoir, with tons of Bert's photographs from the early 80s NYC downtown scene, interviews and photos from his great 90s DIY zine BB Gun and lots more! Bert played in early era Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks and more, and after a brief and humble look back at his childhood influences, the book quickly turns into kind of a time capsule of the late 70s & 80s underground through his own eyes and camera. It includes snapshots of legends performing or hanging out at Mudd Club, Max's and CBGBs we'd probably never see without this book, behind the scenes pics with Sonic Youth in their early days and tales of Bert's time with Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Bewitched and other bands. Also vital are the compiled BB Gun pieces, where Bert interviewed and photographed artists as varied as Dead Moon, Lydia Lunch (who pens the forward for this book), Nancy Sinatra, Genesis P Orridge, Elliot Smith, James Chance and lots of others. ✨✧ VariousTruck Drivin Son Of A Gun ... CD
Starday/Nashville, 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nobody put together a truck driving country record better than the Starday/Nashville label in the 60s – and this sweet little set is a perfect tribute to their talents! The set's full of cool, groovy, truck-themed tunes from the indie underground of the time – not the polished pop work of the big labels, but close-to-the-ground cuts from a company who really gave a lot of new ideas a chance – ideas, in this case, that had a lot to do with the rising role of the truck driver, and all the complications of interstate travel! There's plenty of nicely obscure tunes here – and maybe a few that you'll know from other collections, but which are more than appreciated in this company too. Titles include "When I Come Drivin Through" by The Willis Brothers, "Big Mack" by Johnny Bond, "Truck Drivin Son Of A Gun" by Red Sovine, "Convoy In The Sky" by The Willis Brothers, "The Gear Jammer & The Hobo" by Red Sovine, "That's Truck Drivin" by Slim Jacobs, "Man Behind The Wheel" by George Morgan, and "Thunder On The Road" by Johnny Bond. Errol BrownDubb Everlasting/Dub Expression ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of dub classics from Errol Brown – back to back on a single CD! Dubb Everlasting is a record that might mis-spell the name of its genre, but it's also a set that strips things right down to the core, then adds a very unique touch! Errol Brown works here in the Treasure Isle studios with massive rhythms from The Revolutionaries – but in a session that also includes a mysterious harmonica player too – who uses the instrument to carve out unusual riffs that are sometimes jazz, sometimes bluesy – almost making it feel like War's Lee Oskar is sitting in for a session down in Kingston! The instrument is quite different here than when melodica is used in dub – and titles include "Eva A Dub", "Marigunna Affair", "Babylon Dubbing", "Escape Affair", "Biblical Dub", and "Easy Locks". On Dub Expression, the mighty Errol Brown is at the controls in Treasure Isle – reworking some wicked rhythms played by The Revolutionaries – all with the stripped-down vibe of the best underground dub from Kingston in the 70s! Echo is heavy on the bottom-end of the sound – which makes the grooves ebb and flow in a way that's got a heck of a lot of sonic power – while some of the more isolated instruments over the top step along in a more melodic way – sometimes a bit of organ, guitar, or bubbling bass, depending on the track! The presentation is as stripped-down as the music – but at that mysterious level that only makes the record such a cool little treasure – with tracks that include "Bond Street Rock", "Ranking Marshal", "The Gun Court Dub", "Ital Stew", "Super Tracks", "Dread At The Controls", and "Ghetto Dub". Stelvio Cipriani at his funkiest – taking all the lessons learned from his slinky, erotic sounds of the early 70s – and turning them into a mix of sweet sounds with a great late 70s vibe! Some tracks are upbeat and almost have a clubby feel, others have a great slow-stepping approach to funk – and there's a few others that are moodier, mellower instrumentals – of the sort that Stelvio first rose to fame with – but often with as much acoustic elements and percussion as his usual sweet keyboard work! Titles include the previous single – "Chicago USA" and "Percussion Gun" – both very funky tracks with a similar theme – mixed with lots of other unreleased numbers, including "Spanish Nights In Black Satin", "Lyonesse", "Changing Face", "Chicago USA 2", The Predator", "Crazy Town", and a number of other tunes with variations on the title "Scorticateli Vivi". This is about as strong as you can get from Willie Colon – he's holding a gun to some cat's head on the cover! (And hip hoppers think they invented the gangster image!) More than just a catchy picture, though, the image is really important at a symbolic level – as the guy Willie's capping is an older one, possibly a bloated bandleader from years past, being shoved out of the way by Willie's leaner, cleaner sound and style. The album more than lives up to that picture, too – as it's filled with hard-hitting salsa numbers that show Willie and crew refining their sound even more from their already-strong previous albums. Includes the long cut "Junio 73", a really wonderful number, plus loads of other great ones that include "Guajira Ven", "Vo So", and "Calle Luna Calle Sol". CD

Jose JamesNo Beginning No End ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. New Copy ... $7.99 11.98
A great new chapter in the career of Jose James – and a record that really seems to take his already-amazing vocals to a whole new level! In a relatively short career, Jose's already been turning a lot of heads with his work on other projects, his jazz-based recordings, and his debut for Gilles Peterson's album – yet this Blue Note set may well be his best record to date – and a set that definitely seems to find just the right place for his classic-styled approach to soul music vocals! Backings are mostly live, with a cool small funk group feel – but a bit more laidback too, almost with the jazzy touches you'd hear on some of Gil Scott-Heron's best 70s work, inflected with hipper changes with a 21st Century vibe. The whole thing's great – as important to Blue Note's move into soul as the Robert Glasper Experiment album – and titles include "Vanguard", "Heaven On The Ground", "Come To My Door", "Trouble", "Sword & Gun", and "It's All Over Your Body". Motown, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2CD ... $13.99
A solid 2CD set of the prime pop funk and decadent soul jams of Rick James – his classic work and some great, but not so famous stuff he recorded for Gordy/Motown, from the late 70s to the mid 80s! Anthology isn't an all encompassing set, but it gets to the heart of the best of the Rick James sound on its 2CDs – from the Bootsy Collins inspired funk jams early on, to the crisp, shorter, crossover mega hits like "Super Freak", and his collaborations with Teena Marie and some classic Motown artists. Titles include "You And I", "Mary Jane", "Hollywood", "Bustin Out (On Funk)", "Fire It Up", "Love Gun", "Come Into My Life", "Big Time", "Island Lady", "Super Freak", "Fire And Desire" and "Happy" with Teena Marie, "Dance Wit Me", "Standing On The Top" feat The Temptations, "Hard To Get", "Ebony Eyes" with Smokey Robinson, "Cold Blooded", "PIMP The SIMP" with Grandmaster Flash, "Glow", "Moonchild", "Sweet And Sexy Thing" and more. Ben E KingMusic Trance ... LP
Atlantic, 1980. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Ben E King goes into a sweet sweet music trance – that late 70s dancefloor mode that really helped transform his sound, and breathe new life into his career! The style's not really disco, but is more an upbeat take on modern soul – a groove that still broke big on plenty of dancefloors at the time, but which focuses more energy on the classic style of singing that's always made King so great! The album's got a bit of a split approach – in that the first side was handled by Bert DeCoteaux, who brings in some wonderfully warm tones – and the second side by Mass Production, who throw an ensemble funk groove behind Ben's vocals – with mighty nice results. Titles include "Music Trance", "And This Is Love", "Touched By Your Love", "You've Only Got One Chance To Be Young", "Hired Gun", "Everyday", and "Work That Body". LP, Vinyl record album

A really unusual moment from Lulu – who's quite far here from To Sir With Love – and starting to take on the music of Davie Bowie as well! The set features a really surprising collaboration with Bowie and Mick Ronson on versions of "The Man Who Sold The World" and "Watch That Man" – both pretty fantastic, and given maybe a bit more mid 70s polish than the originals, but with more than enough of Ronson's guitar to tie them strongly to the original Bowie recordings. The album also includes the great James Bond theme tune "The Man With The Golden Gun" – which is a real standout, and very much in the best legacy of Bond title tunes. Other titles include "Take Your Mama For A Ride (parts 1 & 2)", "Boy Meets Girl", "Baby I Don't Care", and "Old Fashioned Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Chocolate Industries, 1979. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible bit of electric funk from the hinterlands of Ohio – an obscure album that hardly saw the light of day back in the 70s, making its first national debut in this excellent reissue! The sound of the set is incredible – moody Fender Rhodes, Arp, moog, and organ over bass and percussion that ranges from spare and skittish, to funky and full-on! A few tracks feature a bit of vocals, but the album's mostly concerned with the interplay between the keys and the percussion – tripping out in wonderfully open-ended tracks, the best of which offer almost a keyboard alternative to the spacey sound of Shuggie Otis in the mid 70s! Re-launched with the Dante Carfagna seal of approval – and a set of tracks that includes "One Slave One Gun", "Quiet Isle", "Untitled", "Ja Ja", "Summer Time", "Punk Fun", and "Hypertension". CD

PortisheadThird ... CD
Mercury, 2008. Used ... $3.99
A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. Titles include "Silence", "Hunter", "Nylon Smile", "The Rip", "We Carry On", "Deep Water", "Machine Gun", "Small", "Magic Doors", "Threads". CD

A treasure trove of reggae, rocksteady, and blue beat work from the late 60s – all of it originally released under the guidance of producer Dandy – also a reggae artists of his own, with roots in Kingston, and working here with a big impact on the UK scene! The albums here were all originally issued on the Down Town imprint – a small sub label that Trojan Records gave to Dandy for his own projects – which resulted in the two killer compilations Red Red Wine volumes 1 and 2 – a great overview of some of the strongly soul-influenced sounds that were bubbling up in London at the time. Dandy himself is one of the key artists on the collection – and titles include "Move Your Mule", "I'm Your Puppet", "Reggae In Your Jeggae", "Got To Come Back", "Raining In My Heart", and "Can't Get Used To Losing You" by Dandy – plus "Red Red Wine" and "I'm Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got" by Tony Tribe, "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Love Me Tonight" by Audrey, "Lover's Question" and "Spreading Love" by Gene Rondo, "Lead Them" by Desmond Riley, "Games People Play" by The Israelites, and "Song Byrd" by Lyndon Johns. CD2 begins with the Trojan classic Blow Your Horn by Rico & The Rudies – a classic early album from Rico – the legendary Jamaican trombonist who's gotta be one of the few people who can pose with his instrument and still look pretty badass overall! That quality also comes through in Rico's music – a famous lead trombone sound on countless Jamaican recordings from the ska years onwards – really given some great time here in the spotlight on a set of tunes that soar out with lots of rough rocksteady rhythms! Rico blows strongly and soulfully – on titles that include "Rico's Message", "Niyah Man", "Caribbean Serenade", "Jumping The Gun", "Mighty Dan", "Session Begin", "Biafra", and "Quando Quando" – and the album also features some guest appearances on "The Lion" by Dandy, and on "Muma Muma" by The Israelites. Last up is Your Musical Doctor – a full album with Dandy as the lead singer on his own – with titles that include "Touch Of Poison", "Everybody Loves A Winner", "Gumption Feeling", "Meeting Over Yonder", "Here I Go Again", "Come On Home", and "Run Girl". 2CD set features 51 tracks in all – with a few more bonus tracks too! An overdue look at London's Fashion Records label – an important reggae imprint that was to the British scene of the late 20th Century what Trojan was in the 70s! But Fashion also had a quality that did them one better – they recorded and issued work that originated in the UK – documenting a reggae scene that had grown to be as important as Kingston by that time – thanks to trans-Atlantic flows of vinyl, and a fair bit of immigration from the West Indies too! The music here is strongly in the styles that really exploded in London during the stretch – and early digital dancehall material is offset by sharp-edged jungle rhythms, and warmed up by some lover's rock too – but always with a quality that's earthy, and very close to the streets. Mindblowing sounds from the morning after the Summer Of Love – a time when the UK scene really woke up to some vast musical changes – a good number of which are represented in this overstuffed set! The package does a great job of catching that special shift in modes from groups who might have been straighter mod, rock, folk, or R&B just a year or two before – and who now are really letting their hair down (and probably growing it too!) – finding confidence to work out loads of new ideas of their own, and really set the scene for musical modes that would shape the world for the next decade or so! A few of these artists cracked the charts at the time, some might hit fame in the 70s, but most of the acts are those who were part of an underground hip scene from the moment they first recorded – and still stayed that way for many decades to come. The mix of modes here is great – and as always with Cherry Red/Esoteric, there's a nice booklet of notes that really illuminates the music. 52 tracks in all – with work by The Moles, Tomorrow, Caravan, Ten Years After, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Van Der Graaf Generator, Second Hand, Eyes Of Blue, Eclection, John Martyn, Love Sculpture, Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, Jethro Tull, Giles Giles & Fripp, Pretty Thinbs, Dave Mason, Barclay James Harvest, The Aquarian Age, The Move, Gun, Deep Purple, The Bystanders, Dantalian's Chariot, Blonde On Blonde, Eyes Of Blue, and many more. ✨✧ Sanford ClarkFool ... CD
Dot/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge run of early material from the greta Sanford Clark – a singer who's not only a great twangy talent from the 50s, but who's also noteworthy as the first big project from the great Lee Hazlewood! Lee supports Sanford on all of this material – which not only includes big recordings for Dot Records, but also tracks for Jamie too – almost all of which were produced by Lee, and feature great twanging guitar from Al Casey – who was probably number two, next to Hazlewood's main guitar man, Duane Eddy. Production has all that great echo that Lee was working with right at the start – which seems to make the words on the great Hazlewood-penned songs somehow sound even more sinister. CD features 34 tracks in all, and a huge amount of detailed notes – with titles that include "Darling Dear", "Lonesome For A Letter", "Don't Care", "Love Charms", "New Kind Of Fool", "Go On Home", "Bad Luck", "A Cheat", "The Fool", "Lou Be Dou", "Modern Romance", "The Man Who Made An Angel Cry", "Son Of A Gun", "Still As The Night", and "Every Minute Of The Day". A rare ep of soulful instrumentals – played by a small combo led by Cliff Davis, brother of Carl Davis, the legendary Chicago soul record producer. Cliff played tenor on many soul sides of the time, and Carl got him the chance to cut this one-off album for Epic when he was heading up the related Okeh label. The set's a groovy batch of jumpers with a sax right up front – grooving in kind of a Jr Walker mode, but with a lot more touches of Chicago soul, and a bit of funky jazz. Titles include "Percolatin", "Whine Time", "Shake", "Shot Gun", and "Hello Dolly". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Yambo, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Even though Chicago was a strong blues city in the 70s, there still weren't that many underground recordings of the music – as most of the sessions were in the hands of the bigger (or soon to be bigger) labels, which wasn't really the case with the soul sessions at the same time. This one's one of the few real indie albums we ever see from the time, and it features Chicago's classic bluesman playing with a group that includes Lafayette Leake on piano, Buster Benton on guitar, and the more famous soul stars Louis Satterfield and Phil Upchurch on bass. Tracks are pretty straight blues, but they sound a lot better than most of Willie's other records from the decade – and titles include "I'm Wanted", "Suffering Son Of A Gun", "If I Could See", and "You Got To Move". We're the first to admit, we've taken a few shots at Dre over the years on these pages, but there's no denying his impact on hip hop, and that he's probably the producer with one of the longest and most solid careers. We're not pretending this album's any kind of landmark as far as mic skills are concerned, but it's a classic nonetheless. For better or worse, this LP was the template for too many pale imitators, but taken on its own, stands up to the test of time, whiny keyboards and all. 16 tracks in all, counting the interludes, including "F**k wit Dre Day", "Let Me Ride", "Nuthin' But A G Thang", "Lil Ghetto Boy", "A Nigga Witta Gun", "B!tches Ain't Sh!t", "The Chronic", "Deeez Nuts", "Stranded On Death Row" and more. Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1988. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic album by one of the greatest groups on Creation Records – one of the few to really get the label's aesthetic perfectly right – and a vastly overlooked group that's finally getting its due! House Of Love had a near-perfect revision of psychedelia going on in the mid 80s – a style that honed the 60s genre down to all its best bits, yet without any of the clunky or commercial leaning that you'd find in any other acts of the time – particularly the paisley underground from LA – and without any of the too-stoned traps that so many Brit groups fell into a few years later. House Of Love know that guitars are god – and use them here in some of the same echoey territory of Felt, but a lot more deftly too – sometimes pretty darn fuzzy, yet always a lot more tunefully focused than Jesus & Mary Chain too. Titles include "Christine", "Hope", "Touch Me", "Fisherman's Tale", "Man To Child", "Sulphur", and "Love In A Car". 2LP set also features a full album of bonus tracks from singles – 13 more cuts that include "The Hedonist", "Loneliness Is A Gun", "Blind", "Destroy The Heart", "Mr Jo", "Real Animal", "Shine On", "Plastic", and "Nothing To Me". A stunning bit of Latin funk from Motown – the only album of its type we've ever seen on the label, a real groover that kicks it up with the best of the early 70s Chicano scene! The record's got all the core elements that make a set like this so great – jamming instrumentation, soulful vocals, and lots of hard-rolling rhythms – but the album's got an even greater asset in the way it was put together – produced with lots of nice spacious touches that push the instruments and percussion out even more into space, giving the whole thing some really tasty cosmic touches! Great stuff – and an album you might have passed up, but filled with wonderful tunes! Sun's got a tightness here that's amazing – right up there with Earth Wind & Fire at their best, but not as commercial overall – and instead, always delivered with a nice sense of righteous energy! The set kicks off with the wicked "Sun Is Here", a guitar-driven groover with a very famous sample riff – and a sound that's somehow more stripped-down and jazz funk-driven than a lot of the group's other tunes. ✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD

The mighty Errol Brown is at the controls in Treasure Isle – reworking some wicked rhythms played by The Revolutionaries – all with the stripped-down vibe of the best underground dub from Kingston in the 70s! Hebden produced, mixed, and co-wrote much of the set – and most of the music feels as if he's making contributions as well, although at a level that's quite different than most of his own music – almost as if the strong vocals and lyrics from Neneh helped unlock this really great corner of his talents, which get refocused on the record to also help bring a strong sense of vibrancy to Cherry's music as well – and almost have us rediscovering her all over again. Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". As with Prince, James' version of funk here is a bit offbeat – lots of riffing guitars in the mix, and a bad-strutting groove that's still conventional mainstream funk of the time, yet with some edgier elements that led Rick to label his music as "punk funk" (or was it "funk punk"?) Given the end-of-70s spirit, you might also say that some of the cuts were aimed at the dancefloor – although James was never really one to storm the discos as much as others. The added electric presence of the instrument really brings a lot to the usual Mancini charts here – creating some cool spacey and soulful moments you wouldn't expect, and some of those surprising Mancini funky bits that show up on records from the time! The set features a great medley of Barry White's "Love Theme" and MFSB's "TSOP"; classic soundtrack material like "The Thief Who Came to Dinner", "Theme From White Dawn", and the great sample track "Theme From The Girl From Petrovka" – plus the tracks "The Sex Symbol", "Hangin' Out", "Song For Anna", "The Stripper", "Dolce" and "The Entertainer". Theme From Z is cool Mancini work from the start of the 70s – a record that offers a nice step forward from his scoring styles of the 60s, with a slightly orchestral feel as well! A strong return to the mic from the one-and-only Pharoahe Monch – his unbelievably long-awaited follow up to the amazing Internal Affairs – and one of the best major label hip hop LPs of the first half of '07! Pharoahe's nearly decade long absense from the mainstream seems to have spawned a bit of a contemplative streak on some tunes, an anthemic streak on others, and a modern cultural awareness that might catch you off guard – if you only know him for the "Girlies, rub on ya . . ." mantra, you don't know the half it. Welcome back! Production by Alchemist, Black Milk and others. Titles include "Free", "Desire" feat Showtyme, a reimagining of PE's "Welcome To The Terrordome", "What It Is", "When The Gun Draws", "Body Baby", "Bar Tap" feat Mela Machinko, "Hold On" feat Erykah Badu, "So Good" and the epic closer "Trilogy" (Acts I, II and III) feat Mr Porter, Dwele and Tone. LP, Vinyl record album
(In a stickered SRC sleeve.)

✨✧ VariousWestbound Disco ... LP
Westbound (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic funky club from one of the hippest soul labels of the 70s – Detroit powerhouse Westbound Records – home to Funkadelic, The Counts, and some other very hip artists! Westbound disco isn't the same as the grooves you'd hear from Philly and New York – because the label started out in funk, and many of these tracks have an approach that's more fast funk than soaring strings – often recorded by groups who were hitting a funky 45 style in the earlier part of the 70s, then taking off with longer grooves with the rise of the club scene in the second half of the decade. As usual with Ace Records, the choice of cuts is great – and the package is as illuminating as it is groovy – with titles that include "Devil's Gun" by CJ & Co, "Wings Of Fire" by Dennis Coffey, "High On Mad Mountain" by Mike Theodore Orchestra, "You Brought The Sunshine (12" version)" by The Clark Sisters, "Beat Your Feet" by Eramus Hall, "Freaky People" by The Crowd Pleasers, "Feel The Need" by Detroit Emeralds, and "BYOF" by Fantastic Four. ✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandMosaic Select (Kogun/Long Yellow Road/Tales Of A Courtesan/Insights/March Of The Tadpoles) (3CD set) ... CD
RCA/Mosaic, 1974/1975/1976/1977. Used 3CD ... $69.99
Seminal work from one of the hippest big bands of the 70s – the legendary ensemble led by pianist Toshiko Akioshi and reedman Lew Tabackin! The group marks a huge shift for Akiyoshi – a move away from the more bop-inflected small combo work of earlier years, into a rich new role as a composer and arranger – one who comes up with fantastic charts for the ensemble, filled with color, tone, and a great sense of swing! Tabackin's reeds are great too – always handled with bold lines, and a strongly visionary sound – and other players on the dates include Bill Perkins and Gary Foster on saxes, Bobby Shew and Ron Raider on trumpets, Britt Woodman and Charlie Loper on trombones, Don Baldwin on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. The 3CD set features 5 albums in all – Kogun, Long Yellow Road, Tales Of A Courtesan, Insights, and March Of The Tadpoles – and titles include "Elegy", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Opus Number Zero", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", "Strive For Jive", "Village", "Studio J", "Mobile", "Deracinated Flower", and "Notorious Tourist From The East". CD
(Out of print. Slipcover has light slice mark that runs about 4 inches down the front cover but is otherwise in great shape.)

Dyke & The BlazersWe Got More Soul/Shotgun Slim ... 7-inch
Original Sound, Late 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
A great groover from Dyke! "We Got More Soul" starts with a nice bubbly intro, then leaps into one of those soul-party cuts – where the singer runs through the names of some of the biggest soul stars of the time, giving a little comment on each star's style. Nice groove to the cut, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Label has a bit of marker and a sticker spot.)
