✨✧ Neil ArdleyKaleidoscope Of Rainbows (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Gull/Lantern Heights (Italy), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet little double-length set from British jazz rock genius Neil Ardley – one that has him working off the vibe explored on the Greek Variations album, but hitting a sound that's a fair bit funkier overall! As with other efforts, Ardley draws here on some really top-shelf talents for his ideas – soloists who include Ian Carr on trumpet, Ken Shaw on guitar, and Tony Coe, Barbara Thompson, and Brian Smith on saxes! The tracks are all quite longish, and unfold in a really organic way – building over an immediate rhythm at some points, or letting the soloists set the main vibe at others. There's nothing overly-obtuse about the record at all, and Ardley never lets anyone dominate too much – making the album a strong group effort with a really unified vision – but one with plenty of space for the feeling of the individual players. Titles include "Rainbow One", "Rainbow Two", "Rainbow Three", and so on. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lars GullinDanny's Dream – The Legendary Years 1951 to 1954 ... LP
Metronome (Sweden), Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
An excellent collection of early work by Swedish baritonist Lars Gullin – singles recorded for the Metronome label in the years 1951 through 1954, all with small combo backing and a very lively sound! Gullin was easily one of the greatest 50s players on his instrument on either side of the Atlantic – and like Pepper Adams, Serge Chaloff, and a rare few others, he could play baritone with a fluidity and sense of tone that was simply amazing. The energy on most of these tracks is much more becoming a tenorist of the time than players on Gullin's instrument – and the small group accompaniment features many Swedish jazz luminaries who include Ake Persson, Bengt Hallberg, Rolf Blomqvist, and Arnold Johansson. 29 titles in all – including "Igloo", "Apostrophe", "Merlin", "That's It", "All Yours", "Gull In A Gulch", "Smart Alice", "Smooth Breeze", and "Holiday For Piano". ✨✧ Jan HarbeckSound The Rhythm ... CD
Stunt (Denmark), 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful tenor from Jan Harbeck – a musician who's included four Ben Webster tunes on the album, and who definitely owes a lot to Ben in his tone! Harbeck's not a slavish Webster imitator – for one thing, his sense of rhythm and phrasing is very contemporary – yet he's got this warm, raspy charm that really hearkens back to the kind of special touch that Ben brought to the tenor, as he worked in a generation that really helped transform the way the instrument was used in jazz – to a point where it's now become one of the most soulful means of expression, especially in the hands of a player like Jan! The group features Henrik Gunde on piano, Eske Norrelykke on bass, and either Anders Holm or Morten Aero on drums – and one title features guest alto from Jan Zum Vohrde. Titles include the Harbeck originals "Lighter Shades", "Tangorrus Field", "Blues Crescendo", "Tail That Rhythm", and "Circles" – next to Webster tunes "Shorty Gull", "I'd Be There", "Poutin", and "Woke Up Clipped". Cheetah, 1991. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of those LPs that will go a long way towards rewriting the place of the south in the hip hop history books, from the era before the ascendancy of the ATL, etc. etc. Some of these cuts are definitely aimed at getting butts clapping, but there's more than a few respectable rhymes here, some excellent DJ work, and of course, loads of bass. 23 tracks in all, including "Speedy & Poncho", "Ain't No Doubt About It", "Dynamic Duo", "Do You Like Bass?", "Slow Draggin", "Madness To The Brink Of Insanity","Just Cruisin", "Suckers Frontin", "I'm Gonna Make It Real Funky For You", "The E & The Sea-Gull", "Give 'Em An Example Of How A DJ Works", "Abracadabra", "Feel The Bass III", "Shake Your Booty Baby" and "The Boo-Boo Of Rough J Rough". ✨✧ Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 6 – Sideman 1949 to 1952 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... $8.99
Although known best for his seminal work as a leader – over a range of key recordings from the 50s and 60s – Swedish reedman Lars Gullin also lent his talents to many other artists as an important sideman, as you'll hear in this much-needed look at an overlooked side of his work! Like other releases in this series, there's a huge amount of material here – over 25 tracks, running for nearly 80 minutes – featuring Gullin performances from 1949 through 1952 – lending his talents on baritone sax (and sometimes as arranger) to jazz musicians who include James Moody, Zoot Sims, Arthur Osterwalls, Stan Getz, and Putte Wickman – plus performances in all-star groups who include Leonard Feather's Swinging Swedes, Svensk Jazz 50, and Jazzkritikerorkestern 1951 – and even a few cuts with singers who include Alice Babs, Brita Borg, and Charles Judah. The collection is as comprehensive as you might guess – and titles include "Swedish Pastry", "The Man I Love", "Moody's Bounce", "Flamingo", "Two Fathers", "Who Sleeps", "The Girl With The Net", "Moon Over Miami", "Dancing In The Dark", "First Walk", and "Be Bop Knopp". Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 8 – Danny's Dream 1953 to 1955 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Early 50s. Used ... $6.99
The material that made Lars Gullin a legend – important early 50s sessions for the Metronome label in Sweden, also issued over here in the US by Emarcy – as records that really helped Gullin's fame spread quickly! The tracks really have Lars finding his own voice strongly – using the baritone sax with tenor-like dexterity, in small combo lineups that often use the guitar of Rolf Berg in place of piano – which makes for a really unusual sort of tonal approach! The guitar rings out wonderfully next to the baritone – creating a great interplay of sonic textures – save for a few tracks that feature Lars playing a bit of piano, which he'd take up more strongly in later years. Titles include "Circus", "Manchester Fog", "Jump For Fan", "Bugs", "Stocks & Bonds", "Danny's Dream", "Lars Meets Jeff", and "Igloo" – and CD features a few alternate takes too – plus great notes! Lars GullinLars Gullin With The Moretone Singers ... LP
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good+ ... $14.99 19.99
One of the more enigmatic of Lars Gullin's mid 50s American albums – a session that features the master baritonist blowing alongside the Moretone Singers – a vocal ensemble who sings in cascading tones that kind of shade and color the background. The approach is different than other jazz vocal group records – in that the singers don't really handle solos or songs – they mostly just come in chorus formation to support the group, in the manner of a string ensemble. The sound's dark and moody, and actually makes a surprisingly wonderful backdrop for Gullin's majestic horn – really setting him free from the rest of the group, not having to worry about swing, just exploring space and sound in a way that's rare for his albums of the time! Titles include "Late Date", "Lover Man", "Merlin", "Late Summer", and "For FJ Fans Only". LP, Vinyl record album

Lars Gullin/Ake PerssonLars Gullin/Ake Persson ... LP
Philips (Japan), 1957. Near Mint- ... $48.99
A tremendous team from the Swedish scene of the 50s – Lars Gullin on baritone sax and Ake Persson on trombone – as great of a match on their instruments as Gerry Mulligan and Bob Brookmeyer in the US! But the music of Gullin and Persson is no simple copycat of American modes either – as there's a freshly modern quality throughout – a way of sliding together the instruments that makes each horn pairing come out as way more than the sum of its parts – setting the tunes up beautifully before each player hits their own solos. Gullin's work on baritone is especially great – as lean as most folks' use of a tenor, with a wonderful sensitivity throughout. Credit's also due to pianist Gosta Theselius, who also does some of the arrangements on the set – and titles include "Monotones", "Happy Again", "Nassi Goreng", "Ain't No Use", "Just Lonely", "Mountain Music", and "Besame Mucho". Joni MitchellJoni Mitchell (aka Song To A Seagull) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/Rhino, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
The mindblowing full length debut of Joni Mitchell – and a record that instantly set a whole new tone for singer/songwriter material in the late 60s! Joni had years of folk experience before this set, but the record is something else entirely – dark at times, deeply personal, and inflected with an understanding of jazz phrasing that haunts some of the guitar work, and maybe a bit of the vocals – yet all in a way that's very different than much of Mitchell's later work too. The record is definitely one of those landmarks in this moment of an artist who emerges fully formed, with a sound that's all their own – resonating with a strength that's as powerful now as it was way back then! Titles include "I Had A King", "Sistowbell Lane", "The Dawntreader", "Cactus Tree", "Song To A Seagull", "The Pirate Of Penance", "Nathan La Franeer", and "Night In The City". LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp & Lars GullinHouse I Live In (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 33.99
A mindblowing little record – one of those jazz meetings you might never have thought possible, and every bit as great as you'd expect! By the time of this set, Lars Gullin had already reached the heights of jazz in Scandinavia – one of the hippest players of the 50s, ready to branch out into even new ideas and expressions in the 60s! Enter Archie Shepp, quite young at the time, but already a fiercely creative talent on the tenor – blowing here alongside Gullin in the relaxed, open format of a live date at the Club Montmartre in Copenhagen – a well-recorded performance that was done for Swedish radio, and which has both players taking very long solos. It's great to hear Lars really stretch out – sounding looser and grittier than on some of his studio work – and Shepp's really on fire blowing through the standards on the date – almost hinting at that approach he'd use in the late 70s, but with all the burning quality of his youth! Other players include Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and titles include "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", "The House I Live In", "I Should Care", and "Sweet Georgia Brown". ✨✧ Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 7 – Silhouette 1951 to 1953 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Small group recordings from the great Lars Gullin – all recorded in Sweden in the early 50s, and issued by the Modern and Metronome labels on 10" and 7" vinyl releases! The first three tracks on the set are the rarest – as they were never issued at the time – material by a quartet that features Lars blowing beautifully on baritone, with great piano from Gunnar Svensson – on tunes that include "Alone", "The Continental", and "Stella By Starlight". Next are more great quartet tracks that have Rune Ofwerman on piano – on two takes of the tune "For Goofers Only", plus "All The Things You Are" and "You Go To My Head". Next are some of the best-known Gullin material to US listeners of the time – as they were also issued by Prestige as a 10" LP titled Lars Gullin & His Groups – making Gullin probably the most-issued European jazzman in the US during the postwar years! The music here is very much in keeping with the "groups" promised in the title – and Lars plays in an octet, quintet, and sextet – almost all of which have that tightly arranged, Swedish cool jazz approach. Titles include "Smooth Breeze", "Smart Alec", "Silhouette", "Merlin", "Apostrophe", "Disc Major", and "Colon". The last titles are from a very cool 10" album called Holiday For Piano – which came with a cover that had a "for sale" sign on a piano, and which has Gullin's group working piano-less – ala Gerry Mulligan – with Ake Persson's trombone sounding wonderful in the format, on titles that include "Sad Sally", "You Blew Out The Flame", "Holiday For Piano", "Night & Day", and "Brazil". Over 70 minutes of music – a real treasure at this price! CD

Collectables/Atlantic, 1956/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Europe's greatest jazz musicians ever – captured here on two rare albums from the 50s! Although Lars Gullin was mostly a baritone player, his rich talent on the instrument won him many accolades during the postwar years – and he recorded a huge amount of albums, both here in the US, and home in his native Sweden. These two sessions were originally issued in Sweden on Metronome, but are offered here in the versions issued by Atlantic in the US during the late 50s. Both records are some of Gullin's best straight material from the time – and they feature him swinging hard and straight-ahead, in a perfect setting made up of some of Sweden's finest players. Titles include "Always", "After 8pm", "Half Nelson", "So What", "Fedja", and "Perntz". Great to have back out again – and what a deal! ✨✧ OlympicsDoin The Hully Gully (Ace) ... LP
Ace (UK), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing vocal work from The Olympics – a great little group who bridged the gap between doo wop and 60s soul – and who had a pyrotechnic style that only The Coasters could match! Like The Coasters, The Olympics often mixed in a good deal of humor with their tunes – not only in the subject matter, which often included topics from the lower end of the mid century cultural spectrum, but also in the way they delivered the tunes – which was always lively and exuberant! This quality made for some nice little groovers in the group's repertoire too – tunes that rock and roll with an early approach to upbeat 60s soul, and which has made some of their numbers perennial dancefloor favorites. Titles include "Little Pedro", "Dodge City", "Private Eye", "Big Boy Pete", "Big Chief Little Puss", "Stay Away From Joe", and "Baby Hully Gully"; plus bonus tracks not included in the original issue. Excellent work from Chet Baker's 1955 tour of the NATO nations – 13 recordings done with the legendary pianist Richard Twardzik, plus a few other surprising guest stars! Twardzik was one the the freshest talents of the west coast scene of the 50s, but a player who was sadly overlooked, due to his tragic early death. The set captures him at the height of his powers, working with Baker on 9 tracks recorded in the studio in Paris – with a lineup that includes Jimmy Bond on bass and Peter Littman on drums – plus 4 more live recordings from a 1955 concert in Stuttgart, with Lars Gullin joining the group on baritone sax, plus one especially great number that features Catherina Valente scatting along on jazz vocals! The set features 13 tracks in all – with studio titles that include "Rondette", "Mid Forte", "Sad Walk", "Re-Search", "Just Duo", "Piece Caprice", and "The Girl From Greenland" – plus live tracks that include "Cool Blues", "Brash", "Lover Man", and "I'll Remember April". Be Bop DeluxeLive In The Air Age ... LP
EMI/Harvest, 1977. Very Good+ 2LP ... $4.99
The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". Although pressed up by Verve, the music is definitely Imported From Europe – as Stan Getz plays here with a host of great Swedish players – on a date that makes for a real standout in his 50s catalog! Stan was living in Sweden at the time of the album – bringing a big influence to the scene there, and furthering the already modernist tones that some of the nation's best players were creating in the postwar years. There's a brilliant blend of iciness and warmth going on here – and players include Bengt Hallberg on piano, Ake Persson on trombone, Erik Nordstrom on tenor, and Lars Gullin on baritone – plus American Benny Bailey on trumpet, who was also making a home for himself over there at the time! Tim HollierTime Has A Way Of Losing You – The Tim Hollier Anthology (Message To A Harlequin/Tim Hollier/Skysail/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... $30.99 36.99
Three rare albums from this overlooked UK singer/songwriter – presented here with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Message To A Harlequin – heady pop from Tim Hollier, who's working with some especially nice arrangements from John Cameron – all in an orchestral pop mode that almost gives the record a Moody Blues sense of space and ambition! Hollier's vocals are sometimes folky, but have a trilling quality that reminds us a bit of Tom Rapp – a sound that's somewhat thin, but supported nicely here by Cameron on a batch of original tunes penned in a very painterly mode! Titles include the great "Full Fathoms Five", plus "Message To A Harlequin", "Streets Of Gold", "Hanne", "Jimmy", "In Silence", and "And Where Were You That Morning Mr Carroll". Next up is the self-titled Tim Hollier album – a record that seems to have its roots in folk, but which pushes forward with so much more going on – maybe a bit like some of the more unique hybrids on Island Records at the time! Tim's got a way of singing that certainly seems inspired by folk – distinct phrasing, a gentle trill, and strong use of his own work on acoustic guitar next to the lyrics – but there's also larger arrangements on the set, and some heavier, headier moments too – all of which give the whole thing the same sort of moody vibe that earlier artists like Tim Buckley were starting to unlock. There's an almost eerie sound to the album at times – and titles include "Man Of Gentle Sunlight", "Seagull's Song", "And It's Happening To Her", "Love Song", "Maybe You Will Stay", and "Would I Sing". Last up is the Skysail album – a set that seems to have Hollier really maturing his style, and getting very strongly past his roots – with an approach that really leans on his strong vocal ability, set to larger arrangements by John Cameron and Ed Coleman. Titles include "Time Has A Way Of Losing You", "Tenderly Stooping Low", "Sunshine Moonshine", "Through The Darkness", "While London's Days Increase", "Tomorrow Is The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life", and "Beauty Of The Gardens". CD features bonus tracks – 10 more live tracks from BBC sessions and other sources – plus the single tracks "The Circle Is Small" and "In A Corner Of My Life/Time Stood Still". CD

The group here features Geoffrey Keezer on keyboards, Ron Blake on saxes, and Terreon Gully on drums – really hitting the kit with a pounding intensity to match McBride's pulsating work on both acoustic and electric basses – jamming here a lot strongly than we remember from other studio sides. The expanded package is presented (amazingly) at the same price as a regular CD – and offers plenty of long tracks to really hear this great band stretch out in a space that's nicely between conventional jazz and some of the looser modes of the jamband underground. It's wonderful stuff all around, the kind you might fear dipping into given the incessant jumps both stylistic and continental, but given the bygone eras, it works very well. 23 tracks on 2LPs: "Jubilee Anthem" by Eleja Choir, "Fiorassio" by Effisio Melis, "Jat Song" by Bhoora Singh And Party, "Upa Upa" by Les Tamaru, "Ma Thama Zinek" by Raoul Journo, "Angihambe" by Zwabesho Sibisi, "Byggnan" by Eric Sahlstrom, "Hill And Gully Ride" by Lord Composer and more. Blue Note, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another wonderful set from vibist Stefon Harris for Blue Note – with his group Blackout – a seriously tight unit with Harris's vibes and marimba atmosphere enveloping some great work on Fender Rhodes by Marc Cary, drums by Terreon Gully, alto sax by Casey Benjamin and acoustic bass by Darryl Hall. The opener "Nothing Personal" busts the set out of the gate really tight and excitingly, with some mellower, groovier tunes on the follow up tracks that touch on the 70s soulful vibe just enough, while keeping things very propulsively jazzy. Other tracks include "For Him, For Her", "Until","Red-Bone Netti-Bone", "Summertime", "Blackout", "King-Tut's Strut" and a nice turn on Bobby Hutcherson's "Montara". CD

Lion, 1974. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those amazing obscure records that seems to come out of nowhere – sounding nothing like most of the mainstream work of the time, with a power that might have shaped the world of music for years to come – if the album hadn't been issued in a tiny pressing of only 60 copies! There's a darkness here that's mindblowing – not just in the vocals, and the weird echoey way they've been recorded – but also in the overall instrumentation and pacing of the record – kind of a melancholy, slow progression that almost prefaces 80s styles on 4AD, but with a much rougher feel overall! Any psyche impulses are broken down into much sparer, earthier sounds – and there seems to be a bit of electronics in the mix – or is it just noise from the guitar? Yet lyrical themes are up-close and personal too – almost chance-taking in their earnestness, without the somberness of the instrumentation. All of this makes for a sublime mix – and a record that's as captivating as it is rare. Titles include "Lonely Again", "I Want To Love You", "Goodbye Sunshine", "Candleman", and "Seagulls" – and 2CD set features a whopping 23 bonus tracks – a huge amount of unreleased material, and a few other singles by the group. ✨✧ Julius LesterDressed Like Freedom ... CD
Vanguard/BGP (UK), 1965/1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Powerful 60s work from Julius Lester – a unique singer who recorded two rare albums for Vanguard Records – both done in a stunning mix of folk, blues, and soul styles! Although a bit different in style, Julius belongs to the same generation as Terry Callier – and there's a definite link here between the modes of expression used by Lester and those employed by Callier on his first album for Prestige – a style that dips way back into the roots of tradition for inspiration, but inflects the music with some of the righteous leanings and political energy of the civil rights era. As with Callier's first album, the instrumentation here is quite spare and folksy – often so that the focus is most strongly on Lester's voice, singing here in a way that sounds far more ageless than a singer in his 20s! CD features great notes and photos – and compiles 14 tracks from the albums Julius Lester (1965) and Departures (1967). Titles include "Tryin To Make It In", "See How The Rain Falls", "Long Haired Woman", "Stagolee", "Watch The Seagulls Flying", "Weep O Weep", "Long Hot Summer Days", and "Dressed Like Freedom". CD

Reprise, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive collection of work from the legendary Bridget St John – a singer who just seems to get better and better the more we listen to her music! First up is the album Ask Me No Questions – a set with the same spare, chilling quality as Nico's first album on Verve! Like Nico, Bridget is amazingly without categorization – a folksinger initially, but one who's working here with a darkly personal quality that goes far beyond most folk work of the 60s! There's almost a Leonard Cohen-like quality to the tracks here – as they're little song-paintings in words that accomplish a tremendous amount with very little – evocative portraits and landscapes that need little more than Bridget's voice and guitar to carry them off. Titles include "Autumn Lullaby", "Like Never Before", "Barefeet & Hot Pavement", "I Like To Be With You In The Sun", "Many Happy Returns", and "Ask Me No Questions". Next is Songs For The Gentle Man – a slightly more expanded version of the sound explored on her debut! Bridget's still very much in a folk-inspired sound here – but like the work of Nick Drake and some of her contemporaries on the British scene, this album has jazzier phrasings and some slightly baroque touches on some tunes – really deepening the feel of the songs, and giving the album a dark depth that we'd easily compare with some of Drake's greatest work. Studio genius Ron Geesin produced the set with a surprising degree of subtlety – just the right amount of edgey undercurrents to unsettle the tunes nicely – never threatening Bridget's presence on the album, but augmenting the moody spectrums that already came across so nicely on the first record. Titles include "A Day A Way", "City Crazy", "Back To Stay", "Seagull Sunday", "If You'd Been There", "Song For The Laird Of Connaught Hall (part 2)", "It Seems Very Strange", and a version of Donovan's "The Pebble & The Man". Next is Thank You For – a slight shift in styles for British singer/songwriter Bridget St John – an album that shakes off a few of the folksy touches of earlier years, but still retains all the dark corners that make her work so great! A few tracks on the album have Bridget working with more traditional accompaniment, but overall most of the record still focuses strongly on voice and guitar – augmented slightly by additional instrumentation that's used sparingly, but beautifully. Most of the tracks here are still by St John – including "Nice", "Thank You For", "Happy Day", and "To Leave Your Cover" – but the album also features a few covers, like Buddy Holly's "Every Day" and Dylan's "Love Minus Zero No Limit". And the final CD features BBC recordings from 1968 to 1972 – including performances for Nite Ride, Top Gear, Peter Sarstedt, Bob Harris, and In Concert. CD

Nothing serious here – as the sound is soulful, jazzy, and in the hippest fusion spirit of the time – very long, open tracks by a small combo led by Heikki Sarmanto on Fender Rhodes, on tracks that are in the more exploratory side of the Miles Davis/Herbie Hancock spectrum! The work here represents the Finnish fusion underground at its early peak – really finding its own voice, and a strong sense of space that sets it apart from some of the more rockish fusion from more southern spots on the continent – and Sarmanto's keyboard work is wonderful throughout – as much concerned with the rhythms and leadership of the group, as with its own presence. Core quartet players include Lance Gunderson on guitar, Pekka Sarmanto on bass, and Craig Herndon on drums – and titles on this first volume include "Seagull", "Magic Suite", "Hop Scotch", "Free Lance", "Azure Skies", and "Mysterious Ruins". One of the greatest moments ever from Marc Bolan and T Rex – a set that takes all the fantastic ideas they had swimming around in their heads, and focuses them down into some short, tight songs with a hell of a lot of punch! The record's got a mix of full-on fuzz and gentler acoustic moments – a vibe that's a bit like David Bowie on Hunky Dory, but a bit more sinister – and, no surprise, mainman Bowie producer Tony Visconti is at the studio helm – providing perfect direction for the whole project, and adding in just a bit of strings when needed. Bolan's never sounded better – and titles include "The Children Of Rarn", "Childe", "The Visit", "Time Of Love Is Now", "One Inch Rock", "Summer Deep", "Seagull Woman", "Suneye", "The Wizard", and the classic "Ride A Wild Swan". An excellent 70s European session recorded by Mal Waldron – one that shows off some of his more avant jazz inclinations at the time! The group's a searing one, with an unusual combination of players – Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Manfred Schoof on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – and while the pairing of Lacy and Waldron is a familiar, and excellent one – it's also great to hear both of them in this quintet mode too. Pop, soul, and a whole lot more – all presented here in a set of 12" single mixes that really rocked the dancefloor back in the eighties! Apart from the underground scenes of hip hop and house, the decade also had a great moment where lots of styles criss-crossed in the clubs – and found a way to resonate together, thanks to the mixing power of the 12" single – a format that was arguably at its height during the 80s! This set hearkens back to those glory days – and presents a set of 30 tracks that include "Wishing (ext)" by Flock Of Seagulls, "State Of Shock (dance mix)" by The Jacksons, "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (special 12" dance mix)" by Miami Sound Machine, "Stop To Love (12" mix)" by Luther Vandross, "Hitmix (official bootleg megamix)" by Alexander O'Neal, "Freeway Of Love (rock mix)" by Aretha Franklin, "Cuddly Toy (ext mix)" by Roachford, "Out Of Touch (club mix)" by Hall & Oates, "Hazy Shade Of Winter (purple haze clean mix)" by The Bangles, "She Bop (special dance mix)" by Cyndi Lauper, "See Those Eyes (dance mix)" by Altered Images, "Life In Tokyo (12" ext)" by Japan, "We Are Detectives" by Thompson Twins, "Fight For Ourselves (ext rmx)" by Spandau Ballet, "Hey Manhattan (JFK rmx)" by Prefab Sprout, "Go Wild In The Country (12" mix)" by Bow Wow Wow, "Eye Of The Tiger (special ext European version)" by Survivor, and "Medicine Show (ext rmx)" by Spandau Ballet. An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Titles include the wonderfully playful "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" – plus "Too Many People", "Heart Of The Country", "Dear Boy", "Ram On", "The Back Seat Of My Car", and "Smile Away". 2CD version features some rare tracks and b-sides – including "Another Day", "Oh Woman Oh Why", "Little Woman Love", "Love For You", "Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Great Cock & Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Rode All Night", and "Sunshine Sometime (earliest mix)". Fontana (UK), 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record from the British jazz scene of the late 60s – and quite possibly the best-ever set cut by baritone saxophonist Ronnie Ross! Ross was always a great player in his own right – probably the second greatest European baritonist of his generation next to Lars Gullin – but on this record he really steps forward with a bold new sound – one that's filled with sharp edges, modal rhythms, and some of the more adventurous jazz modes that had been showing up the Saba label during the late 60s. His partners in crime here include tenor saxophonist Art Elefsen, trumpeter Les Condon, vibist and pianist Bill LeSage, bassist Spike Heatley, and drummer Tony Carr – and both Elefsen and LeSage contribute really tremendous sounds to the record, especially on those numbers that feature vibes. All tracks are originals by the members of the group – filled with dynamic energy and freely exploratory grooves – and titles include "Dolphin Square", "Cleopatra's Needle", "Stand By", "Tibufa", "Brewer's Castle", and "U69". Sampha's a singer who's always hard to peg, but one who grabs you right away – with a voice that's one of the most unique, distinct, and powerful in contemporary soul music – and which deserves to be heard in all its brilliance on a record like this! We're not sure how to describe what we like so much – there's a raspiness at times that make his lyrics almost feel conversational and up-close, and a touch of a London accent that makes familiar words a bit more meaningful, and maybe a slight sense of warmth amidst it all – an indication that Sampha's never too full of himself, even though you might guess that from his image on the cover! Production and instrumentation is nicely understated – really letting the voice flow over the keys and other elements – on titles that include "Spirit 2.0", "Wave Therapy", "Only", "Rose Tint", "Inclination Compass", "Stereo Colour Cloud", "Jonathan L Seagull", "Satellite Business", "Time Piece", "Only", and "Can't Go Back". Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel.
