Jan HarbeckSound The Rhythm ... CD
Stunt (Denmark), 2019. Used ... $11.99
Beautiful tenor from Jan Harbeck – a musician who's included four Ben Webster tunes on the album, and who definitely owes a lot to Ben in his tone! Harbeck's not a slavish Webster imitator – for one thing, his sense of rhythm and phrasing is very contemporary – yet he's got this warm, raspy charm that really hearkens back to the kind of special touch that Ben brought to the tenor, as he worked in a generation that really helped transform the way the instrument was used in jazz – to a point where it's now become one of the most soulful means of expression, especially in the hands of a player like Jan! The group features Henrik Gunde on piano, Eske Norrelykke on bass, and either Anders Holm or Morten Aero on drums – and one title features guest alto from Jan Zum Vohrde. Titles include the Harbeck originals "Lighter Shades", "Tangorrus Field", "Blues Crescendo", "Tail That Rhythm", and "Circles" – next to Webster tunes "Shorty Gull", "I'd Be There", "Poutin", and "Woke Up Clipped". Lars GullinLars Gullin ... LP
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $15.99
Quite possibly the greatest American release by Swedish sax star Lars Gullin – a really tight little set with no gimmicks, no tricks – just tight grooving by a small Swedish group! Gullin is on baritone as usual, grooving the horn like few other players could – and the rest of the ensemble features Carl Henrik Norin on tenor, Rolf Berg on guitar, and George Riedel on bass. Titles include "Bugs", "Jump For Fan", "Lars Meets Jeff", "A La Carte", and "Soho". LP, Vinyl record album

Lars GullinLars Gullin Live ... LP
Columbia (Sweden), 1969. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Great late live work from Lars Gullin – material that features boppish live performances, at the level of his earliest recordings – but definitely done with some of the more modern inflections that he explored in the 60s! In addition to Gullin on baritone, other players include Lalle Svensson on trumpet, Bernt Rosengren on tenor, Leif Wennerstrom on drums, and either Bjorn Alke or Torbjorn Hultcrantz on bass. Tracks are nice and long – and have a different vibe without a piano in the group. LP, Vinyl record album

East West/Atlantic (Japan), 1956. Used ... $13.99
Quite a rare set from this important Swedish player – one recorded in Sweden by Metronome, but issued here in the US on the short-lived East-West imprint of Atlantic. The tracks all feature Gullin on baritone sax – in a variety of settings that range through quartet, quintet, sextet, octet, and big band. As always, Lars pulls far more out of the instrument than any of his contemporaries could hope to – and the backing he gets from Swedish modernists like Arne Domnerus, Rune Ofwerman, Bert Dahlander, and Sven Ake Persson really help keep things moving along at a strong pace. Titles include "Half Nelson", "Ma", "Yesterdays", "Like Someone In Love", and "After 8pm". CD

Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 2 – Modern Sounds – 1953 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1953. Used ... $4.99
Seminal sounds from the legendary Lars Gullin – both Swedish and American recordings from the early 50s, a time when Gullin was really making waves on both sides of the Atlantic! Lars had a skill with his instrument that few others could match – an ear for color that's a bit like Gerry Mulligan on baritone, but also an inherent swing that's a bit more Serge Chaloff too – inflected strongly with that great Swedish modern element that really came in during the postwar years – making him a perfect match for players chosen for these sessions! Other musicians include Lee Konitz on alto sax, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Conte Candoli and Weine Renliden on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor, and Wade Legge, Putte Lindblom, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – and a few tracks also feature Lars playing alto sax as well. The CD features a massive 24 tracks in all – including all of the rare Modern Sounds album issued here in the US by Contemporary Records – with titles that include "The Squirrel", "Deed I Do", "You Go To My Head", "Hersey Bar", "North Express", "Lady Fingers", "The Front", "Chloe", "Night & Day", "Dedicated To Lee", "Late Date", and "Yvette". Lars GullinLars Gullin With The Moretone Singers ... LP
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Very Good- ... $1.99
One of the more enigmatic of Lars Gullin's mid 50s American albums – a session that features the master baritonist blowing alongside the Moretone Singers – a vocal ensemble who sings in cascading tones that kind of shade and color the background. The approach is different than other jazz vocal group records – in that the singers don't really handle solos or songs – they mostly just come in chorus formation to support the group, in the manner of a string ensemble. The sound's dark and moody, and actually makes a surprisingly wonderful backdrop for Gullin's majestic horn – really setting him free from the rest of the group, not having to worry about swing, just exploring space and sound in a way that's rare for his albums of the time! Titles include "Late Date", "Lover Man", "Merlin", "Late Summer", and "For FJ Fans Only". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/Early 90s. Used 4 CDs ... $39.99
Tremendous work from Mal Waldron – four later albums that have him hitting a whole new level of power! Waldron's always been a compelling artist – from his 50s hardbop work to his 60s modern moments to his rich array of overseas recordings in the 70s. But on these 80s sides for Black Saint/Soul Note, he takes off in a rich new direction – one that's stepped in the sort of spiritual modes that other American players were using in the 70s, touched with some of Waldron's more creative, complex approaches to jazz! The lineup on these records is all great – with stellar reed work from either Sonny Fortune, Ricky Ford, or Charlie Rouse – and trumpet by the great Woody Shaw on two of the dates – plus bass by Reggie Workman, and drums from Eddie Moore and Ed Blackwell. Tracks are very long on most records – lots of hard-burning, stretched-out, all-soul solos that are mighty nice! Includes the full albums The Git Go, Seagulls Of Kristiansund, Crowd Scene, and Where Are You – packed in small LP-styled sleeves. CD

Heinie BeauMoviesville Jazz ... LP
Coral, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $11.99
An obscure west coast session led by reedman Heinie Beau – a player who mostly recorded with film orchestras of the 50s, but who sounds great here in the company of better-known LA names like Howard Roberts, John Graas, Don Fagerquist, Buddy Collette, and Red Callender! The style here is a bit like some of Graas' albums of the time – especially for Decca – tightly arranged, with lots of bold colors and rhythms – but still plenty of space for breakout solo moments on flute, alto, trumpet, tenor, and other reeds. Beau's conception is really wonderful – filled with modern influences, but always strongly swinging – almost in the jazz soundtrack mode you might expect from the title! Tracks include "The Three Heads Of Adam", "In Your Private Eye", "Scotland Yardbird", "The Cool Tin Roof Story", "Moonset Boulevard", "Gullible Travels", and "The Gina Pastrami Cha Cha Cha". Sonorama (Germany), Mid 50s. Used ... $6.99
Bold bass saxophone sounds from the overlooked Helmut Brand – a German player of the postwar years, and one with a sense of tone and texture to rival that of Gerry Mulligan at his west coast best! The work here is all previously unreleased, but shows Brand as one of the key reed innovators of the German scene at the time – right up there with the experiments of Hans Koller, especially in the way that Helmut can work fresh tones in with a strong sense of soul and swing! Many of these cuts feature trumpeter Conny Jackel joining in the frontline – folding his horn in with Brand's to create a cool wash of color – and a few other numbers feature Helmut alone as the lead soloist in a quartet, one with Roland Kovac on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include "Bami", "Nordlicht", "Yesterdays", "Salute To Lars Gullin", "Love For Sale", "Berlin Calling", and "Sum". CD

Electric keyboards galore – and a sweet 70s album from Japan! The set features a large group of Japanese keyboard players – all playing Korg synthesizers, in styles that range from laidback and mellow to upbeat and funky! The group's got core backing by a tight rhythm combo – electric guitar, bass, and drums setting up the pace on some of the most driving numbers – but overall, most of the sound is from the electric keys – making for a really groovy little record that's got lots of cool 70s soundtrack touches, and plenty of tracks that sound like they were lifted off of American cop or crime scores of the time! Titles include "The Fire Dance", "Mother Of The Future", "Mayflower", "Ironsides", "Heated Point", "Soaring Seagull", and "The African Dawn". Great break on "The Heated Point" too! CD

Excellent work by both of the players listed as leaders – and the beginning of a huge tradition of American jazzmen in Europe that would culminate in the glory days of the Clarke-Boland Big Band scene! The record features sessions cut by Haynes in Stockholm, with Sahib Shihab on baritone and alto, Ake Persson on trombone, and Bjarne Nerem on tenor – plus sessions cut by Jones earlier in the same city, with Persson on trombone, Arne Domnerus on alto, Lars Gullin on baritone, and Art Farmer on trumpet. The tracks have a tightly arranged, but still swinging style – similar to the best hardbop work on Emarcy from the 50s – and the European soloists more than keep up with their US counterparts! ✨✧ Lebron BrothersLlegamos/We're Here ... LP
Cotique, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Soaring salsa from the mighty Lebron Brothers – a group who first burst on the Latin scene with a strong run of Latin Soul recordings, but who are taking a more straightforward approach here! Yet that change hardly makes any difference, as the Lebrons still have that bold, youthful energy that made their records such a great change from some of the too-big bands of the previous generation in Latin music – and their shift from boogaloo to salsa is a great example of the way the key younger acts were helping make the waves that so many other artists would follow! Pablo Lebron sings lead vocals, and Angel and Jose Lebron co-lead the mighty tight grooves – which include alto from Gabe Gill and tenor from Herman Saldana – both players who keep a soulful sound to the set. Mirwood/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Heavy soul from Jackie Lee – one of the most hard-grooving singers to record on the west coast scene in the 60s! The package pulls together all of Lee's legendary sides for the Mirwood label – the classic Northern Soul album The Duck, and lots of equally great singles that have the smooth-toned vocalist working at a very uptempo clip! The package is the first to really do justice to all of this music – and it features a whopping 28 tracks all presented with wonderful sound quality, which really blows away any previous reissue – especially considering that there's some unissued material here too. And as always with Kent, the notes are as great as the track selection – 16 pages that tell the full story of Jackie's burning career at the time, complete with vintage photos and images. Titles include "Do You Love Me", "The Bounce", "The Duck (part 2)", "Hully Gully", "Do The Temptation Walk", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "A Man Ain't Nothin", "Oh My Darlin", "Try My Method", "Treat Her Right", "Tin Pan Alley", "Dancing In The Street", "Everybody Jerk", "Harlem Shuffle", and "Whether It's Right Or Wrong". Joe LockeLove Is A Pendulum ... CD
Motema, 2015. Used ... $7.99
A really beautiful record from vibist Joe Locke – and maybe his most dynamic album in years! The set's got Joe working in a particularly angular mode – carving out these wonderful lines of sound with core rhythms from the trio of Robert Rodriguez on piano, Terreon Gully on drums, and Ricky Rodriguez on bass – all younger players who provide a very fresh setting for Locke's vibes! Joe's still got all the warmth of his recent records, but also has a bit more edge, too – which we like a lot – and this quality seems to come out especially strong alongside some of the guests – who include Rosario Giuliani on alto and soprano sax and Donny McCaslin on tenor. Titles include "For Jesse Mountain", "Love Is Letting Go", "Love Is A Pendulum", "Love Is The Tide", and "Variation On Wisdom". CD

Love SculptureForms & Feelings ... LP
Parrot, 1969. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel. Titles include "In The Land Of The Few", "Seagull", "People People", "Mars", "Sabre Dance", "Farandole", and "You Can't Catch Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Situation really do a great job of transforming other folks' tunes here – so much so that the results are really a lot more their own than any sort of familiar remix modes – which is the CD is more of a full album by the band, then just a collection of cuts! Contemporary rhythms and production are mixed with a range of sonic sources that go back to the early 80s – and the album has some of the warmer, more soulful elements that warrant its release on the Nang label too. Titles include Situation reworks/remakes of "Fade To Grey" by Visage, "Jankos Drug" by Dark Punk Hippies, "RU Ready For This" by Fabiolous Barker, "I Got You" by George Kelly, "I Ran" by A Flock Of Seagulls, "Strange Kind Of Love" by Love & Money, "Hold On" by Rubber Lips, "Jealous Girl" by Pure Conjecture, "Don't You Worry About A Thing" by JazzyFunk, and "Perfect System" by Julian Sanza and Andre Espeut. Gosta TheseliusSwedish Jazz ... LP
Bally, 1956. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Really wonderful work from the postwar side of the Swedish scene – modern jazz from leader Gosta Theselius, recording here with one hell of a great group! Theselius may not be that well known on these shores, but the record features key work from players who are – including Bengt Arne Wallin on trumpet, Lars Gullin on baritone sax, Arne Domnerus on alto and clarinet, Bengt Hallberg on piano, and Ake Persson on trombone – all the sorts of players who made the Swedish scene one of the most exciting non-American jazz spots in the 50s! Theselius plays a bit of piano, handled arrangements, and also contributed a number of tunes – but the soloists really get the most sparkle in the set, and although the tracks are shortish, they all manage to really do a lot with the space – in ways that are similar to some of the west coast Americans who inspired them at the time. Titles include "Brewin", "Cool & Cosy", "The Swingin Thirds", "Strollin", "Just Like That", "Bugs", "Havana Horn", and "Chips". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousRevolutionary Spirit – The Sound Of Liverpool 1976 to 1988 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $29.99
A huge look at the Liverpool scene in the UK – but one that doesn't focus on the generation of the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – and instead brings some great attention to the city's contribution to the post-punk years and beyond! The package is tremendous – 100 songs in a huge booklet of notes – tracing an evolution from the late 70s years, when Liverpool was as creative and fervent of a scene as other North England territories, like Manchester and Sheffield – but also one that could quickly develop some tuneful aspects too, which no doubt helped the rest of the UK music scene of the 80s find a way to expand in some great global directions! Throughout the whole time covered here, there's a great tension between experimentation and commercial success – one that's covered beautifully by the many tracks in the collection, and also documented in the hefty notes within. There's far too many tracks here for us to list – but let us say that the package is overflowing with work by artists as diverse as Dalek I, The Wild Swans, China Crisis, Pink Industry, Care, Box Of Toys, Deaf School, Big In Japan, Pale Fountains, Icicle Works, Dead Or Alive, The Lotus Eaters, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Mr Amir, Brenda & The Beach Balls, Jegsy Dodd & The Sons Of Harry Cross, The La's, Jactars, Magic Carpets, Barbel, The Walking Seeds, Thomas Lang, Ministry Of Love, Nightmares In Wax, OMD, The Planets, Spitfire Boys, Geisha Girls, Royal Family & The Poor, Public Disgrace, It's Immaterial, The Balcony, The Yachts, Teardrop Explodes, Original Mirrors, The Press Gang, Moderates, Egypt For Now, Those Naughty Lumps, Flock Of Seagulls, Freeze Frame, Echo & The Bunnymen, and many more! Extremely beautiful work from this trans-Atlantic trio – a group that mixes the lyrical piano talents of Sophia Domancich with the rock-solid rhythms of Hamid Drake and William Parker! The performance features three long numbers, handled beautifully by the trio – often starting with Sophia's ruminations on the piano, soon filled in with bass from Parker and percussion from Drake. A lost European recording from American tenorist Brew Moore – sides cut in the early 60s, immediately after Moore's classic albums for Fantasy in San Francisco – and featuring him in a variety of groupings that are all pretty darn compelling! The core group on the set features Moore's tenor next to the rhythm trio of Bent Axen on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and William Schiopffe on drums – but on alternating tracks, Moore also plays with Lars Gullin on baritone, Sahib Shihab on alto, and Louis Hjulmand on vibes. The mix of other players in the frontline makes for a really interesting session, one that captures the crossover magic that could often happen with American players on the European scene in the 60s. ✨✧ Danny Ben-IsraelKathmandu Sessions ... LP
Locust/Anazitisi (Greece), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Here's some pretty awesome late 60s psychedelic freakout gems from a cat we'd never heard of before – Israeli citizen Danny Ben-Israel – who only ever recorded a couple of albums worth of material! One of those albums, Chantarish 3 1/4 (also known as Bullshit 3 1/4) was recorded in his native Hebrew, and was soon as much as banned in Israel, so Ben-Israel then packed up his English language recordings from the same Tel-Aviv sessions and headed to the US. The massive, free-spiraling tunes that comprise the first 3 tracks on this CD issue combine the kind of way out space trip electric guitar that Hendrix played live but never recorded, and stable bass, drums and Eastern-tinged keyboards that keep it all rock and roll – no matter how out there Danny's wailing vocals and lyrics go. The remaining tracks feature Danny alone on all the instrumentation (bass, guitar, whistle, violin, keyboards and other odd sounds.) Tracks include "Kathmandu", "Bad Trip", "Do You Believe In Fairy Tales?", "Seagulls", "Can't Stand You" and the great closer "The Hippies Of Today Are The Assholes Of Tomorrow" – which is not only one of the most deadpan satires we've ever heard from the psychedelic era, but it also contains just about as much incisive, prescient truthisms as any Dylan tome from late 60s! ✨✧ Mats GustafssonTorturing The Saxophone ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Mats Gustafsson tortures the saxophone – but tortures it beautifully, too – in this wonderful set of solo tracks that mix tenor and live electronics, baritone and music box, and some solo baritone moments too! The title's a reference to a hilarious letter sent to Mats by Robert Crumb – who also did the lettering on the front – reproduced inside, in which Crumb says that he just really doesn't get this kind of music, or understand why anyone would want to listen to it too! Yet there's a beauty and fragility to the record that honestly make it one of Gustafsson's most compelling albums ever – especially the leadoff mix of tenor and electronics, laid out over five famous Duke Ellington numbers – all completely transformed by the process. Ellington titles include "Come Sunday", "In A Sentimental Mood", "I Never Felt This Way Before", and "Blue Goose" – and the set also features versions of the Ayler classics "Angels/Spirits" and "Ghosts" – and a 22 minute take on Lars Gullin's "Danny's Dream". INS/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A cooker of an album from the Colombian scene of the 70s – a set that's much more obscure than most of the work on Discos Fuentes, and which has a really hard-driving salsa vibe! The work reminds us of some of our favorite indie sets from early 70s Puerto Rico – and mixes jazzy flourishes with rootsy percussion – all in a groove that hardly lets up for a minute! Titles include "Afroinspiracion", "Virgen De La Cueva", "Conga E", "Sabroson", "Aprietala"," Guayo Pellizco Y Pata", "Concierto Para Una Sola Voz", and "Orgullosa". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSlow Grind Fever Vols 9 & 10 – Still Yet More Adventures In The Sleazy World Of Popcorn Noir ... CD
Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Plenty to grind to here – a moody mix of R&B, early soul, and other gritty styles from the late 50s and early 60s – served up in a set that may well be the best so far in this excellent series! In a world where some of the contemporary R&B collectors aim for cuts that are supposed to shake certain parts of the female anatomy, these guys look more for deep tracks that groove very slowly – with a kind of blue lights in the basement vibe! CD brings together both the 10" LP volumes 9 and 10 – and titles include "Mr Blues" by Jo & Ann, "Hey Hully Gully No 2" by Van Pince & His Complex, "Danger" by Jimmy Witherspoon, "Living By The Gun" by Dick Holler & His Rockets, "I'm Waitin" by Lee Richards with Left Bates Orchestra, "The Web" by Abie Available Baker, "The Place" by Johnny Guidry with Jeanie & The Clowns, "Sweetheart" by Frank Heppingstall, "The Girl That Radiates That Charm" by June Alexander, "I'm Asking Forgiveness" by CL & The Pictures, "Mr Johnny Q" by The Bobbettes, "What Have I Done" by Jimmy Rogers, "To Be Loved By You" by Marie Knight, "On My Way" by Eddie Lang, and "Taboo" by The Caribs. ✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz In Sweden 1958 to 1960 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Late 50s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
We can never get enough Stan Getz – especially when it's a record like this, which offers up some previously-overlooked sides of his career! Stan spent plenty of time on the Swedish scene in the late 50s – even managed to pick up a bride in the process – and while there, he really gelled wonderfully with the best players of the time – not just local modernists, who were a perfect fit for his music, but also trumpeter Benny Bailey, who was working on the Scandinavian scene too! This 2CD set is a massive document of Stan's best work in Sweden during these years – and it features studio, radio, and live performance material – with players who include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Ake Persson on trombone, Lars Gullin on baritone, Erik Norstrom on tenor, and both Bengt Hallberg and Jan Johansson on piano. Tunes follow a bit of the Verve Records approach used with Stan in the 50s – with arrangements by Persson, Hallberg, and Gullin on some numbers – and titles include "Topsy", "Celebrating", "Cabin In The Sky", "Speak Low", "Like Someone In Love", "Jordu", "Gold Rush", "Night In Tunisia", "Just A Child", "Ah Moore", and "Lover Come Back To Me".
