Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 1 – With Chet Baker – 1955/1956 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
The first entry in this wonderful series that documents the early genius of baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin – a player on the Swedish scene of the postwar years, but one who also got plenty of attention on our shores – thanks to key issues of his records by Emarcy/Mercury in the 50s! Lars has a wonderful tone on his instrument – and is one of a handful of players in his generation who were taking the instrument away from larger ensembles, and using it as a setting for sublime solo work in small groups – a quality that puts Gullin right alongside American greats of the time on the instrument, like Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, or Serge Chaloff! Lars is probably more like the latter two here – swinging with some nice bop inclinations – on tracks recorded with a number of different combos, including four that have trumpeter Chet Baker joining in with Gullin. Titles include "Cool Blues", "Lars Meets Jeff", "Igloo", "Danny's Dream", "All Of Me", "Ma", "Perntz", "Lover Man", "Brash", "Fedja", and "I'll Remember April". CD

Bengt Hallberg with Lars GullinAll Star Sessions 1953/1954 – Featuring Lars Gullin ... CD
Metronome/Dragon (Sweden), 1953/1954. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99 On October 29, 2021
Great recordings from Swedish pianist Bengt Hallberg – recorded at a key point in the 50s when he was really building a reputation in the overseas market! The sides here were recorded for Metronome and Pacific Jazz – and feature Hallberg's sharp-edged piano working with a great range of Swedish reedmen – not just baritonist Lars Gulling, as mentioned in the title – but also Arne Domnerus on alto and clarinet, Carl-Henrik Norin on tenor, and Putte Wickman on clarinet – plus added brass from the trumpet of Ernie Englund and trombone of Ake Persson. Moods are modern throughout – and kind of a blend of Swedish postwar with west coast cool – an aspect that made Hallberg ripe for exposure to the US market at the time. Titles include "Pink Lady", "Side Car", "Whiskey Sour", "Red Wails In The Sunset", "Blues In Fourths", and "Meatballs" – and some tracks are presented in multiple takes! CD

Be Bop DeluxeLive In The Air Age (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Harvest/Esoteric (UK), 1977. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". 3CD set features three more bonus John Peel live tracks on CD1 – and CD2 and CD3 feature a full extended live performance, done in London at Hammersmith Odeon in 1977! Newly remastered, with new notes by Bill Nelson, and in the correct running order for the first time on CD. CD

Ray Brown/MoonstoneMad House ... LP
Festival/Blank (Australia), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
A record that really lives up to its title – as the whole thing's a madhouse mix of psych, Eastern instrumental modes, and almost a sense of narrative songwriting! The album begins with a weird recitation, set to lots of sitar – then opens into a great range of tripped-out styles – including one number that appears to be presented in a completely backward version of the way it was performed! If you've ever been disappointed by a record that promises to be trippy, but isn't – we can promise you won't be disappointed with this one – as your mind expands on titles that include "Flight Of The Gulls", "Story Of Ali", "Mr Blue", "King Velvet", "Danville Queen", "Run Sylvie Run", and "Passing The Time". A contemporary legend in Latin music – one that was done in collaboration with the film of the same name – organized by Ry Cooder, directed by Wim Wenders, and put forth as a reminder to America that Cuban culture was still going strong, even decades after we turned our backs on the nation! The "social club" in the title is well-put – as there's a relaxed, easygoing approach to the music here – warmly collaborative efforts from some of the greats of the scene in Havana – many of whom were able to enjoy renewed global attention, thanks to the efforts of the record and film. The lineup features Ruben Gonzalez on piano, Eliades Ochoa on guitar, Cachaito on bass, and Guajiro on trumpet – plus famous vocal contributions from Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Omara Portuondo. Lloyd EllisFastest Guitar In The World ... LP
Carlton, Late 50s. Very Good ... $11.99
We're not sure if Lloyd's actually the fastest guitar in the world – but this is a pretty darn groovy album, no matter what the speed! The set's party jazz and partly guitar-driven instrumental work – played by Ellis on a hollow-body electric, with backing by a quartet that includes Tony Morrell on alto and flute, Jerry Christy on bass, and Bennie Steele on drums. The sound's got a nice mix of west coast chamber jazzing with some more pyrotechnic moments – almost kicking up a Jim Hall/Chico Hamilton groove with a bit of Billy Mure fireworks! Titles include "Hot Rod", "Gully Jumper", "Patsy", "Stuff", and "Topsy" – and the cover's got a cool painting of a guitar circling the earth like a comet! LP, Vinyl record album

Stan GetzImported From Europe ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... About November 24, 2021
Although pressed up by Verve, the music is definitely Imported From Europe – as Stan Getz plays here with a host of great Swedish players – on a date that makes for a real standout in his 50s catalog! Stan was living in Sweden at the time of the album – bringing a big influence to the scene there, and furthering the already modernist tones that some of the nation's best players were creating in the postwar years. There's a brilliant blend of iciness and warmth going on here – and players include Bengt Hallberg on piano, Ake Persson on trombone, Erik Nordstrom on tenor, and Lars Gullin on baritone – plus American Benny Bailey on trumpet, who was also making a home for himself over there at the time! Tracks are long, sometimes with a lively jam session-ish feel – and titles include "Bengt's Blues", "Topsy", "Speak Low", and "Stockholm Street". CD

Mats GustafssonTorturing The Saxophone ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
Mats Gustafsson tortures the saxophone – but tortures it beautifully, too – in this wonderful set of solo tracks that mix tenor and live electronics, baritone and music box, and some solo baritone moments too! The title's a reference to a hilarious letter sent to Mats by Robert Crumb – who also did the lettering on the front – reproduced inside, in which Crumb says that he just really doesn't get this kind of music, or understand why anyone would want to listen to it too! Yet there's a beauty and fragility to the record that honestly make it one of Gustafsson's most compelling albums ever – especially the leadoff mix of tenor and electronics, laid out over five famous Duke Ellington numbers – all completely transformed by the process. Ellington titles include "Come Sunday", "In A Sentimental Mood", "I Never Felt This Way Before", and "Blue Goose" – and the set also features versions of the Ayler classics "Angels/Spirits" and "Ghosts" – and a 22 minute take on Lars Gullin's "Danny's Dream". PJ HarveyUh Huh Her ... LP
Island, 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A little bit leaner, and little bit darker, and a lot more solo of a PJ Harvey album after the comparatively bigger sounding Stories From The City, Stories From The City (itself largely the work of trio, though more deliberately layered and polished) – but true to form, Polly subverts the expectation that she'd strip things raw on a record in which does all but play the drums on – not just on guitars and vocals, bass, piano, accordion, melodica and more on an effort that has a fleshed out band vibe done mostly herself! Rob Ellis handles drums and percussion and titles include "The Life And Death Of Mr. Badmouth", "Shame", "Who The F**k?", "The Pocket Knife", "The Letter", "The Slow Drug", "No Child Of Mine", "The End", "Seagulls" and "The Darker Days Of Me & Him". Lebron BrothersLlegamos/We're Here ... LP
Cotique/Get On Down, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 22.98
Soaring salsa from the mighty Lebron Brothers – a group who first burst on the Latin scene with a strong run of Latin Soul recordings, but who are taking a more straightforward approach here! Yet that change hardly makes any difference, as the Lebrons still have that bold, youthful energy that made their records such a great change from some of the too-big bands of the previous generation in Latin music – and their shift from boogaloo to salsa is a great example of the way the key younger acts were helping make the waves that so many other artists would follow! Pablo Lebron sings lead vocals, and Angel and Jose Lebron co-lead the mighty tight grooves – which include alto from Gabe Gill and tenor from Herman Saldana – both players who keep a soulful sound to the set. Titles include "Mi Fracaso", "Si Ti", "Todo Lo Hechaste Ha Perder", "Orgullo, Riqueza Y Lujo", and "Tus Recuerdos". LP, Vinyl record album

Bunny Lee & FriendsTape Rolling ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Rare gems from the vaults of Jamaican production genius Bunny Lee – material cut mostly at his home studio, in the company of some very good friends and musical associates – hence the artist listing on the set! Some of the cuts here are from rare dubplates or acetates, others are extended or unreleased tracks from back in the day – and the work is united by a warmly collaborative vibe, and that nicely gritty way that Lee had of cutting a tune – leaving all the sharp corners in place, with an especially nice crackle in the rhythms, while also letting the sweetness really flow from the singer in the lead! Titles include "The Time Has Come" by Slim Smith, "Stick By Me" by John Holt, "Give Me Love" by Cornell Campbell, "Two Ton Gulletto" by U Roy Junior, "Sentimenal Man (ext mix)" by Ernest Wilson, "Devil's Brother In Law" by I Roy & Augustus Pablo, "My Confession" by Cornell Campbell, "Man Next Door" by Horace Andy, "Cherry Oh Baby" by Eric Donaldson, and "Any Heart Can Be Broken" by Delroy Wilson. Los FugitivosLos Fugitivos En La Esquina (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Orfeon (Mexico), Late 60s. Used ... $6.99
Fuzzy work from Los Fugitivos – a garagey combo from Mexico, and one with a great ear for rootsy rhythms! There's a definite nod here towards some of the more southern-influenced rock coming out of the US at the end of the 60s – especially in the group's many covers of CCR tunes – but the overall sound is often quite trippy too, inflected with more psychedelic production that makes some of the more familiar sounds a bit strange. Guitars are heavy in the lineup, as are keyboards – and this CD expands out the original album to include a whopping 23 tracks in all – with titles that include "El Tiempo Apremia", "Ogullosa Maria", "En La Esquina", "Ooby Dooby", "El Tren", "Rio Amarillo", "Cuando Era Jovencito", "El Espiritista", and "Si Te Alejas". The third album of fierce, funky dub from The Revolutionaries – music that's great enough on its own, even without its promise of undressing your dance partner! The work here is in the best territory of classic dub – clear, clean rhythms that have a power in their starkness – then given some slight additional twist by the studio work of Scientist, who never goes as far out here as in some of his later work – and realizes that he can do a hell of a lot with just a little, by inflecting all the right moments on the instrumental tunes. Nang (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $6.99
Situation really do a great job of transforming other folks' tunes here – so much so that the results are really a lot more their own than any sort of familiar remix modes – which is the CD is more of a full album by the band, then just a collection of cuts! Contemporary rhythms and production are mixed with a range of sonic sources that go back to the early 80s – and the album has some of the warmer, more soulful elements that warrant its release on the Nang label too. Titles include Situation reworks/remakes of "Fade To Grey" by Visage, "Jankos Drug" by Dark Punk Hippies, "RU Ready For This" by Fabiolous Barker, "I Got You" by George Kelly, "I Ran" by A Flock Of Seagulls, "Strange Kind Of Love" by Love & Money, "Hold On" by Rubber Lips, "Jealous Girl" by Pure Conjecture, "Don't You Worry About A Thing" by JazzyFunk, and "Perfect System" by Julian Sanza and Andre Espeut. Sly & The Viscaynes (Sly Stone)Yellow Moon – The Complete Recordings 1961/1962 ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The earliest roots of the Sly Stone sound in California – but music that's very different than his heady sounds from the San Francisco scene at the end of the 60s! Instead, the approach here is teen pop and soul at its best – as you'd probably guess from the look of the group, who were all classmates together at Vallejo High – and who work here together as a surprisingly strong sextet! Sly's a member, but we're not going to give him all the credit – as the vocal leads shift, taking full advantage of the young talents in the group – heard here over a very small slice of work during the few years they were together. The harmonies are great – very much in an east coast group soul mode – and the set unearths some rare tapes for some tunes, and also offers up two rare early Sly Stone singles, and a Jasper Woods track that is actually Richard Berry with the Viscaynes. As usual with Ace, the presentation is wonderful – with a huge booklet of notes and lots of photos of the group – to support 19 titles that include "Yellow Moon", "Uncle Sam Needs You", "A Long Time Alone", "Hully Gully Papa", "I'm Coming Home", "Don't Cry Soldier", "I'm Just A Fool", "Oh What A Night", and "Heavenly Angel". The soaring second album from Spin – and like the first from this hip Dutch combo, a very cool mix of funky jazz, tighter arrangements, and some forward-moving rhythms! The sound isn't exactly in the CTI/Kudu records mode, but definitely falls in the same side of the jazz spectrum – as the arrangements are key to the sound of the record, and balance the lineup's sound that includes saxes and flute from Jan Vennik, trumpet from Rein Van Der Broek, drums from Cees Krandenburg, bass from Jan Hollestelle, and guitar from Hans Hollestelle – plus keyboards from both of the last two as well! Things have a nicely swirling vibe – almost an AOR take on funky fusion at times, but with only a bit of vocals on the records, as the set is mostly instrumental – and the group also bring in the great Toots Thielemans for harmonica solos on two tracks too. Titles include "Super B", "Yellow Kites", "You're A Clown", "T Ford Two", "Tarantula", "Baby's Delight", "Dance Of The Seagull", and "Telegraphcanyon Roadrunner". CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... About November 17, 2021
An excellent 70s European session recorded by Mal Waldron – one that shows off some of his more avant jazz inclinations at the time! The group's a searing one, with an unusual combination of players – Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Manfred Schoof on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – and while the pairing of Lacy and Waldron is a familiar, and excellent one – it's also great to hear both of them in this quintet mode too. The tracks are all long – with an approach that's in that later Waldron modal mode on the rhythms, but which gets freer and more open on the solos. Titles include "The Seagulls Of Kristiansund", "Hurray For Herbie", and "One-Upmanship". CD

A great batch of harmony vocal tracks – nearly all of them with an upbeat, kind of silly approach – similar to The Coasters at their best! The Olympics owed a lot to the late 50s Atco recordings The Coasters did with Lieber & Stoller – and they had a similar tight-lipped approach, with lots of vocal tricks, and a set of song themes that runs through the dregs of pop culture of the time – titles like "The Slop", "Little Pedro", and "Private Eye". Other tracks include "Baby Hully Gully (parts 1 & 2)", "Dance By The Light Of The Moon", and "Big Boy Pete". Very early work from Astor Piazzolla – recorded in the decades before he first started hitting fame on the international scene – and with a sound that shows that his skills on the bandoneon were every bit as great in his youth as they were in his later years! The music here is a bit less modernist than some of the nuevo tango modes of Astor's 70s years – but the tracks have a very similar interplay between piano, violin, and accordion – and even when larger orchestrations might creep into the mix, they never get in the way of the standout solo instrumentation at the core! Titles include the beautiful extended "Tango Ballet" – plus "Caliente", "Reparense", "El Recodo", "Orgullo Criollo", "Lunfardo", and "Bandoneon Guitarra Y Bajo". CD
