Jefferson AirplaneLong John Silver/Thirty Seconds Over Winterland ... CD
Grunt/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of late albums from Jefferson Airplane – issued here in a single set, with new remastering too! First up is Long John Silver – a really fantastic final studio album from Jefferson Airplane – a set that's definitely different than their early work, and which shows the new directions that members would soon take on their own – but done with a vibe that's also a fantastic evolution of the core group's famous sound! The guitar work is even more complex than before – Jorma Kaukonen really blowing us away with his skills, but never in a show-offy way, as the whole thing is wrapped around these honest core rhythms that are almost a rootsier take on psyche elements – with Grace Slick's lead vocals almost coming off with a Sandy Denny quality at times. Titles include "Long John Silver", "Aerie (Gang Of Eagles)", "Twilight Double Leader", "Milk Train", "The Son Of Jesus", "Easter", "Trial By Fire", and "East Starch Mom". Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is a late live album from Jefferson Airplane – who were at the end of their journey, but whatever their personal differences may have been at the time, they still put on a helluva great rock and roll show! Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was recorded at that legendary San Francisco venue, and at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, with the post-Marty Balin line-up of Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukomen – plus violinist Papa John Creach, drummer John Barbata and vocalist David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. Titles include "Have You Seen The Saucers", "Feel So Good", "Crown Of Creation", "When The Earth Moves Again", "Milk Train", "Trial By Fire" and "Twilight Double Leader". CD

Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, & David FreibergBaron Von Tollbooth & The Chrome Nun ... CD
Grunt/Esoteric (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $14.99
A classic set from that second chapter on the California scene – that moment when the big initial wave of successful groups had rose and broke, leaving behind all sorts of new creative partnerships! This set's a great example of one of those – as Jefferson Airplane members Paul Kantner and Grace Slick come together with David Freiberg of Quicksilver Messenger Service – then open the door to a whole host of guests who really help make the whole thing an all-star Bay Area affair! You can definitely hear some echoes of Quicksilver, especially some of the more down to earth modes of the later records by that group – which fit perfectly with the vocals – and the lineup features work by Jerry Garcia on guitar on most tracks, plus Mickey Hart on percussion, Papa John Creach on violin, Jorma Kaukonen on guitar, Jack Casady on bass, The Pointer Sisters on backup vocals, and even David Crosby on guest vocals on one track. Titles include "White Boy", "Fishman", "Sketches Of China", "Ballad Of The Chrome Nun", "Flowers Of The Night", and "Across The Board". CD

Jorma Kaukonen With Tom HobsonQuah (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Grunt/RCA, 1974. Used ... $1.99
The mid 70s solo record by Jorma Kaukonen – the legendary guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna – and a really great, sort of back to basics acoustic set! In direct contrast to some of the more bombastic rock coming out of the Jefferson Airplane camp in the early 70s, those one has a rootsier psych folk vibe. Holds up well decades later, too – with titles that include "Genesis", "I'll Be All Right", "Song For The North Star", "Anotehr Man Done Gone" and more. CD

Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... $12.99 15.98
A fantastic slice of lost work from the legendary JBs – including the track that first got Bootsy Collins and company the job as James Brown's backing band! The set leads off with that gem of a groove – the fast funky "More Mess On My Thing" – a tune that's got the sort of impeccable sharpness the JBs would bring to the James Brown universe in the early 70s – complete with tight drums, effortless basslines, and horn lines so tight they could cut glass! "The Wedge" follows – a sweet organ-driven instrumental with a vibe that's a lot like "Brother Rapp" – but stretched out as a long instrumental jam! And that approach really takes off on the super-long "When You Can Feel It Grunt (If You Can)" – a tune that begins with the band doing their own version of "Let The Music Take Your Mind", before going off into all the these other directions on the first-ever issue of the complete take of the tune! Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... $19.99 24.98
A stunner of a record – the first-ever album by The JBs, never issued back in the day – and lost for years until it recently resurfaced on a test pressing! The set features a leaner, more stripped-down version of the group – one that features Bootsy Collins on bass, and which doesn't rely as much on the horns as it does some very upfront playing by the rhythm section – who really set fire to the extended instrumental solos on the album's very long tracks! Group members include Robert McCullough on tenor, St Clair Pickney on flute and baritone, Bobby Byrd on piano, Catfish Collins on guitar, and James Brown himself on organ – and the mighty Clyde Stubblefield handles drums, as well as Frank Kash Waddy. All tracks are very long – quite different than the shorter single-type cuts on Pass The Peas – and the record features the first recording of "The Grunt", plus the long jams "I'll Ze", "These Are The JBs (parts 1 & 2)", and "When You Feel It Grunt If You Can". LP, Vinyl record album

George GruntzJazz Goes Baroque ... LP
Philips (Germany), Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A very groovy set of tunes from the hip European scene of the 60s – and one of the best blends of jazz and classical music we can think of! Sure, the tunes are from Corelli, Handel, Pachelbel, and other baroque composers – but they're taken to hip jazzy territory here in the hands of pianist George Gruntz – who plays some mighty cool electric harpsichord on the set! The sound's more like a 60s soundtrack swing than any staid sort of longhair classics – thanks in part to great work from Klaus Doldinger on soprano sax, and Emil Mangelsdorff on flute – plus swinging rhythms from the team of Peter Trunk on bass and Klaus Weiss on drums. The horns bring in a sense of depth and soul to the record that's missing from other dates of this nature – especially trio sets, like those of Jacques Loussier – and titles include "Corrente", "Pavana", "Gavotte En Rondeau", "Le Croc En Jambe", and "Musette En Rondeau". Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $18.99
A slightly different album than usual from pianist Shoji Aketagawa, but one that still follows strongly in the best tradition of his offbeat gems for the Aketa's Disk label! This set has Shoji co-credited on piano and vocals – the latter of which aren't really sung lyrics, but maybe more sub-verbal expressions done alongside his bold work on the piano – almost an expansion of the kind of grunts you'd hear on older recordings by Erroll Garner, but taken into an even more pronounced position – so that they're often strong enough to become part of the melodic makeup of the tune! The group also features bass from Koichi Yamazaki, and drums from Takashi Miyasaka and Kenichi Kameyama – on titles that include "African Dream", "Footprints", "Yamazaki Blues", "Kameyama Blues", and "Dear Old Stockholm". Jolly/BTF (Italy), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A definite new sound from Italy – served up by one of the hippest groups on the scene at the time! The combo of trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini and tenorist Gianni Basso was easily one of the best of their generation – and here, they're working in a slightly expanded octet mode that features guest work from Swedish baritone sax giant Lars Gullin! The album's great proof of Gullin's ability to slide into any sort of a setting – and his baritone provides a great bottom to the already-dextrous horn interplay between Basso and Valdambrini. Gullin arranged about half the numbers in the set – the rest were scored by George Gruntz or Piero Umiliani – and titles include "Blues For Gassman", "Indiana", "Fascinating Rhythm", "There Will Never Be Another You", "How About You", and "Peter Of April". Dexter Gordon recorded live in Germany – in a mode that's a bit of a change from some of his more familiar Copenhagen sides from the time! The format is similar – long live tracks, with Dex opening up on these fantastically creative solos – with every note seeming to flow with effortless ease, all with an inherent logic that always has Gordon able to keep on going straight ahead, while never ceasing to explore the many possibilities of his instrument! This time around, the great Irv Rochlin is on piano – a different accompanist for Dex, and one whose soulful currents really make the whole thing stand out strongly – with additional work from Henk Haverhoek on bass and Tony Inzalaco on drums. All material is previously unreleased – and titles include "Wave", "Secret Love", "Didn't We", "On The Trail", and "It's You Or No One". CD also features added material – versions of "Fried Bananas" and "Some Other Spring" recorded with Cees Slinger on piano – and takes on "Round Midnight" and "Lady Bird" with George Gruntz on piano. Wild stuff! This record's an attempt to bring together moog and sex sounds, and it goes about its task in the most heavy-handed way possible! Basically, the record's got a number of tracks with cool moogy bits – either musical in kind of a background way, or loud and firey – and these tracks also have recordings of simulated sex (or maybe it's real sex, we can't be sure) plastered on top of them. Not your usual moog record, but it's a nice mix of grunts and groans and beeps and whirrs! LP, Vinyl record album

Groovy sounds for a somewhat creepy film – an obscure 1967 exploitation documentary about the underground hippie sex scene in San Francisco! The record is almost like a mini-movie in sound – in that it features a narrator describing various scenes in the city's underground, while backed by music that features tabla and sitar, all setting a very psychedelic backdrop! The narration is often upfront and no-nonsense – definitely designed to shock, but also not judging the scene at all – and there's some occasional sound effects, and grunts and groans from the folks onscreen. And if that's not enough, the package also comes with a DVD of the entire film – a very rare b-movie relic that was thought to be lost forever! ✨✧ Nina SimoneAt The Village Gate ... CD
Roulette, 1961. Used ... $4.99
An album recorded relatively early in the career of singer Nina Simone – but a set that already shows the very unique approach that would make her a legend by the time the 60s moved on! Even the very first tune is a stunner – a haunting reworking of the favorite "Just In Time", but with Nina grunting instead of singing at the start – as the bass comes across with more power than the drums or piano – really shaping the song in moody tones! That sort of inventiveness follows on every other tune – making the familiar numbers sound very unique, and the unusual ones even more striking – as the set list also features numbers by Oscar Brown Jr, Olatunji, and Simone herself. The recording quality is great – intimate, yet lively – and the set's filled with longish readings of some great tunes that include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Brown Baby", "Zungo", "Children Go Where I Send You", and "He Was Too Good To Me". Be! (Germany), 1967/1968. New Copy 6CD ... $99.99 107.99
Fantastic work from two different years of this important German Jazz Festival – material that provides a great live complement to some of the best studio jazz recordings of the late 60s European scene – such as those coming from the MPS label, and some of the record companies in Paris and London! The vibe here is mostly straight, but there are plenty of currents of modern, and maybe just a bit of free – and the set's especially great in illustrating the sort of unique groupings and musical moments that can make the jazz festival scene so rewarding! Material from 1967 includes three long tracks by the group of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger with organist Ingfried Hoffmann; a long performance from a big band led by Kurt Edelhagen, with work from trumpeters Shake Keane and Jimmy Deuchar, tenorists Wilton Gaynair and Karl Drewo, and altoist Derek Humble; four tracks by a quartet led by trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, with Bent Jaedig on tenor; two long improvisations from a group that features Manfred Schoof on trumpet, Gerd Dudek on tenor, Alexander Von Schlippenbach on piano, and Jaki Liebezeit on drums; one track by a quartet with Ted Curson on trumpet and Nick Bridnola on soprano sax; four long cuts by the Clarke Boland Sextet, with Sahib Shihab on flute and baritone, Ake Persson on trombone, and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet; a sweet large group led by organist Ingfried Hoffmann, and a few other hip cuts too. 1968 features work by a sextet led by bassist Peter Trunk, with Shake Keane on flugelhorn, Jiggs Whigham on trombone, and Rob Pronk on piano; four tracks by the Clarke Boland Big Band, with Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, and Sahib Shihab on baritone; two cuts by the twin tenor group of Hank Mobley and Johnny Griffin; a vocal performance by Jon Hendricks with a Clarke Boland group with Johnny Griffin in the lead; twin trombones from the Slide Hampton and Ake Persson Quintet; hip work from the trio of pianist George Gruntz, bassist Henri Texier, and drummer Daniel Humair; a number of tight tracks from the Maynard Ferguson big band, with Pete King on tenor; and two shorter trio tracks from Joachim Kuhn. Like other Be Music titles, the presentation is great – a really well-done box, and big booklet of notes and images. CD

A great Erroll Garner double-header – two 60s albums back to back on a single CD! First up is Dreamstreet – a record in which Garner grooves nicely, finding an almost renewed energy for the 60s, but still hitting all those highly-rhythmic modes we love so much in his early work! The recording quality is great – lots of bold echo from the piano, and even a bit of Erroll's grunting vocalizations somewhere in the mix – kind of an extra added emphasis that sounds great next to the bass of Eddie Calhoun and drums of Kelly Martin. Titles include "Just One Of Those Things", "Blue Lou", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Dreamstreet", and the groovy "Mambo Gotham" – an especially jaunty little number! One World Concert is a set with an ambitious title, but a nicely earthy feel – a live recording that features Erroll Garner's trio with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – stretching out strongly in front of a live audience. Titles include "Mack The Knife", "Misty", "Dancing Tambourine", "Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe", and "Sweet & Lovely". CD

Ambrosetti's got a beautifully evocative tone on his horn here – and he's supported by a cast that includes Eddie Daniels on flute and sax, Joe Beck on guitar, and George Gruntz on piano – all given plenty of space by Sebesky to express themselves within the larger group – making for work that's full and rich, yet also relatively personal and intimate too. Titles include the funky groover "Lugano Lady", plus "Johanna", "Sleeping Gypsy", and "Demoiselle". CD

✨✧ Nancy DupreeGhetto Reality ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Kind of silly – but also pretty darn hip! Nancy Dupree was one of the most righteous music teachers you could ever have – and here, she's working with some young kids from the rough side of Rochester, in an album of simple tunes that have a surprisingly soulful edge to them. Nancy plays piano, and the kids sing either solo or in ensemble format. The record's got a starkness that's extremely compelling, and it's a lot stronger than we expected, even if it's not like some of the funky stuff on the Folkways label. Includes a song called "James Brown" that has all the kids making grunts and groans ala 60s James, then singing about his shift from a process to an afro! Other titles include "I Want", "What Do I Have?", "Bag Snatchin", and "Docta King". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)
