✨✧ VariousDeviation Street – High Times In Ladbroke Grove 1967 to 1975 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A deep dive into one of the shaggiest scenes in London at the end of the 60s – the weird and wild underground of the city's Ladbroke Grove neighborhood, an area that some would compare to the Haight Ashbury scene in San Francisco! The work here isn't exactly the same as sounds coming from the Bay Area – but it does share a similar sense of freedom and letting the freak flag fly – as groups brewed up their own take on styles influenced by psych, blues, and roots – while coming up with amazing music in the process! The cuts in the set aren't the same as oft-trod classic rock material – and instead, the package delivers an underground that often never made it to our side of the Atlantic, and which was even considered the hipper, lesser-known current of the rock scene in the UK. The package features 58 tracks on 3CDs, complete with a booklet of notes on the West London scene and the groups within – a stunning lineup that includes tracks by Noir, Junior's Eyes, Quintessence, Stray, Steamhammer, Hawkwind, Ron Geesin, Ram John Holder, The Deviants, Davey Graham & Holly, Mighty Baby, The Action, Skin Alley, Pretty Things, Kingdom Come, Roger Bunn, Family, Bond & Brown, Peter Bardens, Carol Grimes & Delivery, Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers, Motorhead, Mataya, Mick Farren, and others – and even an early demo from Roxy Music too! ✨✧ Michael DeaseGrove's Groove ... CD
Le Coq, 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful pairing of two nicely deep horns – the baritone sax of Michael Dease and the trombone of Steve Davis – both players we love on their own, but who create a sense of richness here that's really wonderful! Dease is often best known for his work on trombone, but he can still really swing the heavier reed instrument too – and the balance between baritone and trombone here creates all these bold colors that are really wonderful – soulfully swinging, but with a strong ear for the overall sound of the set! Other players include Bill Cunliffe on piano, Jocelyn Gould on guitar, Rodney Whitaker on bass, and Ulysses Owens on drums – and there's also guest appearances from Alex Acuna on percussion and Terrell Stafford on trumpet. Titles include "The Viper", "Never Let Me Go", "Grove's Groove", "Seiko Time", "Father Figure", and "Minor Funk". CD

Tommy McCook & Bobby EllisBlazing Horns ... LP
Grove/Solid Roots (Jamaica), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 28.99
Blazing horns, indeed – but that's maybe no surprise, given that the album features the great tenor of Tommy McCook and the trumpet of Studio One mainstay Bobby Ellis! The album's kind of an update of older rocksteady instrumental modes, of the sort you would have heard on McCook's records back in the day – lean, nicely grooving in a mellow way, but with a vibe that's more informed by 70s roots at the core – and served up with backings from Sly Dunbar on drums, Robby Shakespear on bass, Ansel Collins on organ, and Clinton Ferron on guitar! Both players get in plenty of solo moments, but sound great in unison too – and titles include "Blazing Horns", "Mine Eyes", "Glorious Lion", "Tommy's Mood", "Ites Of Zion", and "Jah". ✨✧ Legs McNeil & Gillian McCainPlease Kill Me – The Uncensored Oral History Of Punk ... Book
Grove Press, 1996. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible book, and one that's the result of hundreds of original interviews with key forces in underground music in both the US and UK – not just important artists from the mid 70s moment when punk was born, but also singers and musicians from years before and after, which really helps set the stage for the growth and evolution of the music! The book really lives up to its promise of oral history – as it weaves together passages from a huge list of names, really just about anyone important that might be included in such a project – and while the bulk of the book leads up to 1980, there's also a strongly resonant chapter that follows the music into the early 90s scene as well. 476 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ Gay TaleseVoyeur's Motel ... Book
Grove Press, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The insane story of a one-man Kinsey Institute – a Colorado motel owner who set up his premises so that he could secretly watch all of his guests – while he studied their sex habits from his hidden perch! The story's true, and was presented to author Gay Talese in stunning detail – forming the basis of this book, which Talese never thought would see the light of day – until the hotel owner related decades later, and allowed the author to finally bring this material to light! Talese's own words are mixed with copious notes from Gerald Foos – the hotel owner – and the result is kind of a grassroots version of Masters Of Sex! 233 pages, softcover. Book

✨✧ Daniel DeViseKing Of The Blues – The Rise & Reign Of BB King ... Book
Grove Music, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
BB King is a blues musician with a much richer story than most – one that's captured here in very vivid detail by the author, as he mixes together a wealth of historical research with quotations from interviews and other materials too – all of which really makes the long journey of BB King come alive, as he shifts from roots in the south to the Memphis scene, then California, then superstardom that made him one of the biggest blues figures of the 20th Century! There's a great flow to the book – down to earth details that really make you feel like you're following King on his rise to fame – yet the big section at notes also indicates that the author wasn't just throwing stories out there without any support, and did plenty to weave the whole thing together with an eye for the facts. Softcover edition is 481 pages, with some black and white images. Book

✨✧ Carl SmithChicago's Great Fire – The Destruction & Resurrection Of An Iconic American City (hardcover) ... Book
Grove Press, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We're not normally ones to stock urban fire books here at Dusty Groove – but as you probably know, our hometown is Chicago, a city with a pretty incredible history – part of which is a fantastic fire that burned the whole place to the ground back in the 19th century! This huge book dives into great detail about the fire – its origins, its too-long burnout, initial failed efforts to stop it, and the surprisingly quick rise from the ashes that Chicago experienced as a result – as the city turned the tragedy into a way of rethinking and modernizing itself, which made it very well-poised to become a global powerhouse in years to come! Carl Smith tells the tale with a nicely narrative voice, while also showcasing the long research that went into the project – and this hardcover edition is 374 pages, with some black and white images. Vault, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
The Chambers Brothers live – working in the same unfettered mode as their debut for Vault Records – and like that album, a set of tracks that was also recorded at The Unicorn in Boston and at The Ash Grove in Los Angeles! Things are pretty rootsy overall here – with strong influences from Chicago electric blues, plus some of the rougher side of the soul spectrum in the 60s – almost a "more real" presentation of Atlantic or Chess Records ideals than you might get from its original artists! Titles include "Bony Maronie", "CC Rider", "What'd I Say", and "High Heel Sneakers". LP, Vinyl record album

Skip JamesSkip James Today ... CD
Vanguard, Mid 60s. Used ... $6.99
A fantastic 60s album from Skip James – one that's billed as "Today", circa 1966 – but which has James very much back in the same stripped-down style as when he first recorded for Paramount Records back in the 30s! There's no other instrumentation apart from Skip's acoustic guitar – or piano on a few select tracks – and really, the one "today" factor that does stand out is the excellent recording quality, which makes the great vocals of James really sparkle with more sensitivity and charm than they might in a 78rpm setting. Titles include "All Night Long", "Crow Jane", "Drunken Spree", "Cherryball", "Washington DC Hospital Center Blues", "Cypress Grove", "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues", and "My Gal". CD

Vanguard/Ace (UK), 1964. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A really great live performance from this legendary bluegrass group – one who hailed from Southern California, despite their Kentucky name – and a combo whose work arguably set the scene for so much country rock to emerge at the end of the 60s! But even without that legacy, there's plenty here to enjoy from a standard bluegrass perspective – and the interplay between the mandolin of Roland White and guitar of Clarence Whit is worth the price of admission alone! A few guests drop in during the performance – Doc Watson is on a few tracks, and Bill Keith on three more – and titles include "Bill Cheatham", "Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me", "Shuckin The Corn", "Beaumont Rag", "Old Hickory", "Chicken Reel", "In The Pines", "Farewell Blues", "Soldier's Joy", "Shady Grove", "Flat Fork", "Brakeman's Blues", "Over In Glory Land", and "A Beautiful Life". ✨✧ VariousCajun Classics – The Kings Of Cajun At Their Very Best ... CD
Swallow/Ace (UK), Late 1950s/1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great overview of cajun sounds and styles from deep in the Louisiana scene – not the polished-up hits that played on the radio, and instead the kind of indie-released tracks that really drove the scene – grabbed up here from labels like Goldband, Flat Town, and La Louisianne – in a really well-done collection by Ace Records! The music here predates so much of the more widely-circulated recordings from the 70s onwards – and the groove is nicely gritty throughout, with plenty of mad accordion work and a fair bit of fiddle – both of which also have this way of bridging southern blues and country in the process! There's a whopping 24 tracks on the set – and titles include "Lemonade Song" by Leroy Broussard, "The Back Door" by Badeaux & The Aces, "Lafayette Two Step" by Aldus Roger, "Cher Cherie" by Doc Guidry, "I'll Take You Home" by Robert Bertrand, "Equand J'Etais Petit" by Dewey Balfa, "Chopique Two Step" by David Greely, "Sha Ba Ba" by Sidney Brown, "Hippy Tai Yo" by Jimmy C Newman, "Pine Grove Blues" by Nathan Abshire, and "Creole Stomp" by Jimmy Breaux. Benny Golson's one of those players who never lets us down – and here, into his 80th year in on the planet, the man's still burning strongly and soulfully! The set's got a very solid, put-together sort of sound – the quality that's always made us seek out Golson albums of any vintage, amazed at the depth of feeling and richness of creativity that Benny can bring to even a simple sort of date. This one's definitely a cut above, though – self-produced by Golson, and featuring a lineup with Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve Davis on trombone, Mike LeDonne on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – all rock-solid players who help Benny flesh out his sound beautifully here, reaching some nice sensitive points at times, then sliding back into warmly soulful grooves. Al Jarreau guests with vocals on a version of "Whisper Not" – and other titles include "Verdi's Voice", "Uptown Afterburn", "Gypsy Jingle Jangle", "From Dream To Dream", "Grove's Groove", "L'Adieu", and "Love Me In A Special Way". ✨✧ Art WebbMr Flute ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tasty batch of uptempo instrumentals by Art Webb – a lesser-known funky flute player, but one who played on a huge amount of Latin sessions during the 70s (check your session notes, and you'll see his name a surprising amount of times!) This fairly obscure session as a leader was produced by Patrick Adams, who also did all the arrangements and conducted the large backing group – in a sweet mode that's a mix of Adams' clubby work for P&P, and the tighter fusion that you'd expect to hear on Atlantic records at the time. Webb's flute lines soar over larger backings and some chorus vocals that come across with a more polished take on the P&P sound – a mode that's somewhere in the same territory as Bobbi Humprhey's great late 70s records for Epic. Titles include "Melon Grove", "Mr. Flute", "Smile", "Good Times In Life", and "Come and Get Some Of This". CD

✨✧ Sammy Davis, Jr.That's All! ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The greatest entertainer ever? We think so – and this 2LP set offers Sammy D in the best possible way to get him: live, and in the very familiar turf of the Sands Hotel. This live album, and it's counterpart (At The Cocoanut Grove, also on Reprise) are, in our opinion, Sammy's best recordings – because they feature him ripping through a bunch of material, doing lots of great impressions and medleys, and really swinging with a tight little combo led by Michael Silva, the drummer. The groove is really jazzy – way jazzier than on some of Sammy's studio LPs from the time – and he runs through a range of material from pop tunes to standards, done in a style that's far different than you'd expect for the titles. The vocals are tight, heartfelt, but also given a professional little finesse that really makes them sparkle. Titles include "Ain't I", "Another Spring", "On A Clear Day", "As Long As She Needs Me", "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home", "The Lady Is A Tramp", and 2 fantastic medleys with lots of jazzy songs. Heck, Dean Martin never got a chance to cut a double live album – and Frank really ever did one – so given that Sammy got a chance to do two of them, you've gotta figure the format really worked for him! This is the real Mr. Entertainment, and you owe it to yourself to hear him as he really was. LP, Vinyl record album

Fat Possum, 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most legendary bluesmen of the early 78rpm generation – heard here in a wonderfully-recorded set from 1964! The session came at a time when Skip James was hardly getting any mainstream attention, but had been rediscovered by a younger generation – which led to the fledgling Adelphi Records bringing him into the studio and really letting him do his thing! There's no attempt at commercialism here at all – as the tracks are spare, of varying length, and have James letting that amazing vocal style loose – soaring out with a heavenly sound at some moments, and hewing to the rhythms of his guitar at others – given reverent production treatment by the young John Fahey. Titles include "Broke & Hungry", "Crow Jane", "Cypress Grove Blues", "Black Gal", "Drunken Spree", "Illinois Blues", "Look Down The Road", and "Bad Whiskey". LP, Vinyl record album

Not the Hello Dolly album you might guess from the title, but instead a wonderfully groovy batch of tracks from pianist Pete Jolly – an album done with great larger arrangements from Dick Hazard and Dick Grove, and a tight vibe that makes the set one of Pete's grooviest albums ever! Pete's incredibly fluid on the keys of the piano – hitting with a hard punch on the left hand to really underscore the snapping rhythms of the tunes, but flying free on the right with these lyrical lines that are simply beautiful – really on a par with the best 60s work from Vince Guaraldi, and the kind of record that should have more folks talking about Jolly's genius. The core group features Howard Roberts on guitar, Chuck Berghofer on bass, and Nick Martinez on drums – and Jolly's one hell of a pianist in this sort of setting – and it always seems that when he's got a big group behind him, he really lets loose with some great solos, freed from the rhythm of the tracks so that he can skate over the top of the songs in a magical way! Beautifully spiritual sounds from the contemporary LA scene – served up in a record that mixes generations old and new, and with a really wonderful sound throughout! There's a timeless quality to the record right from the start – maybe because the great Phil Ranelin begins the set with a vocal performance over mellow electronics – in a laidback spirit that's followed by the rest of the set too – as a shifting array of artists under the direction of Jesse Peterson turn out a record with a subtle righteous power! Peterson previously worked with Carlos Nino – and there's definitely a bit of Nino spirit here, but with a different vibe – in a lineup that includes Sam Gendel on reeds, Randal Fisher on flute, Fabiano Do Nascimento on guitar, Josh Johnson on alto and keyboards, Aaron Shaw on tenor, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Photay and Diego Gaeta on electronics – plus vocal work from Phil Ranelin, Laraaji, Mia Doi Todd, and Dwight Trible. Royston would go on write novels and more, but early on he was a youthful rebel poet – one of the first figures to recite with a rock 'n' roll band backing him – and he inspired many writers and rockers to come, including the young Jimmy Page – who provides a forward to this volume! The work here is early experimental, very beatnik-oriented poetry – but poetry that's often got the free form and the hard punch of the sorts of work coming out over here on City Lights or Grove Press – the sorts of books that are echoed perfectly in this long-overdue American paperback presentation of Royston's work! 128 pages, softcover. Rings (Japan), 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Alive To Feel", "Island Bells", "Pandanus Grove", "Tune Up", "Ocean Garden", "Floating Sunset", and "Arukitai". CD

EmArcy, 2008. Used ... $7.99
Beautifully understated work from trumpeter Roy Hargrove – an open, laidback session that's easily one of the best he's done in years! Gone are the urban sounds of his RH Factor records, and the more cerebral modes of some of his other jazz sets – and instead, this time around Roy's hitting a warm, fluid groove with plenty of classic overtones and a wonderfully soulful feel! The album's one that would settle in nicely along some of Freddie Hubbard's best later work, and it features a strong quintet with Justin Robinson on alto and flute, Gerald Clayton on piano, Danton Boller on bass, and Montez Coleman on drums. Roy plays flugelhorn as well as trumpet, and titles include "I'm Not So Sure", "Strasbourg/St Denis", "Starmaker", "Joy Is Sorrow Unmasked", "Mr Clean", "Rouge", "Style", "Divine", and "To Wisdom The Prize". The groove soars from Miles-inspired electric to the heavy funk of George Clinton – and makes plenty of side-trips in between – exploring a range of soulful jazz, both new and old, and coming off a lot better than we might have thought! The long-overdue release of a second Crisol project from trumpeter Roy Hargrove – a set that was originally recorded in Guadeloupe in the late 90s, but remained unissued until after Roy's too-early death! The approach here is fantastic – as the core group are augmented by additional percussionists – used in ways that really take off from older Latin jazz modes – rootsier at times, but also with some of the more expressive lines you'd expect from an all-star lineup that also includes Frank Lacy on trombone, Sherman Irby on alto, Jacques Schwarz Bat on tenor, and Larry Willis on piano! There's also great use of guitar from Ed Cherry, warming up some of the musical currents nicely – on titles that include "Another Time", "Lullaby From Atlantis", "B & B", "Kamala's Dance", "Rhumba Roy", "Song For Audrey", "Afreka", and "Ethiopia". Grover Washington JrSoul Box (2LP Box Set) ... LP
Kudu, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... $13.99
One of the richest albums from the Kudu years of Grover Washington – a double-length set that shows the full range of his soul and imagination! The album was done in collaboration with Bob James – who arranged and conducted all tracks, and also plays keyboards on the date – and the style is kind of an added extension of other Washington work on Kudu, with added string and chorus bits to round out the sound! Things are still wonderfully soulful – thanks to James' sense of space and timing on the charts – and if anything, the added voices and orchestrations bring an almost soundtrack-like quality to the record – but one that still leaves plenty of room for Washington's solos on tenor, alto, and soprano sax! Most tracks are quite long – really stretching out with lots of room for fresh ideas – and titles include a 15 minute version of "Trouble Man", plus "Taurian Matador", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Masterpiece", "Aubrey", and "Don't Explain". An incredible batch of electric funk from Grover Washington Jr – easily one of his best albums ever! The record really picks up from the sweet CTI sound of the 70s – taking Bob James arrangements with a lot of space and electric keyboards, and letting Groover blow some wonderfully soulful lines over the top on soprano sax! The album's got some really wonderful funk tracks that feature a mad mix of drums, bass, and lots of that Bob James "space" – including the massive cuts "Hydra" and "Knucklehead" – both of them magic! Other tracks include "Moonstreams", "It Feels So Good", and "The Sea Lion". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Grover Washington JrInside Moves/Paradise ... CD
Elektra/Collectables, 1979/1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 smooth fusion classics from the mighty Grover Washington – Inside Moves, from 1984, and the earlier Paradise, from 1979! Paradise is one of those records you see so much it's easy to forget how great it is! Grover's a real genius with the sax on this record – taking a "less is more" cue from Stanley Turrentine's 70s work, and toning down his playing to an even tighter style than on the Kudu albums of earlier years, to a level of ultimate economy that really leaves us breathless. Sure, the record's not a raw bit of funkety funk – but we're just as enthralled at pure commercial genius as we are at unbridled underground talent, and this album's a masterpiece of pacing, playing, and presentation that shows Washington still steeped in the soul jazz roots from whence he came, brilliantly focused on reaching a larger audience through economical use of his genius. He hits a rarified level here that we'd only reserve for a small few – like Steely Dan or The Crusaders, both groups who teeter on the same brink, and make it work perfectly. Titles include "Asia's Theme", "Tell Me About It Now", "Feel It Comin", "Icey", and "The Answer In Your Eyes". Inside Moves heads into smoother territory – a bit too smooth at times, in a mode that shows that the fusion style of the 70s could be hurt with a bit too much production in the 80s. But Washington still manages some nice moments on the set – getting his voice out strongly on the best solos. Titles include "Jet Stream", "Sassy Stew", "Dawn Song", "Inside Moves", and "Watching You Watching Me". CD

Pure dark magic from Grover Washington – a record that was a megahit back in the 70s, but which still sounds amazing many decades later! There's a sound here that's completely sublime – and the album is to Grover's career what the first 2 CTI sets by Bob James were to his – a stretched-out, masterpiece of sublime jazzy energy – served up with a really spacious sound overall! Grover's sharp-edged sax is at the lead of the set – but the album's also awash in electric piano work from Bob James – and backings that are as lean, clean, and soulful as the best on CTI from the time. Titles include the killer "Black Frost" – a track that we never tire of – plus the hit "Mister Magic", and the cuts "Earth Tones" and "Passion Flower". LP, Vinyl record album

Part of the strength of the record lies in Grover's strongly soul-based sense of timing – allowing for just the right amount of space between the notes to remind you that you're listening to a jazz soloist first and foremost, even when a guest like Patti Labelle might step in for a bit of vocals. Titles include "Brazilian Memories", "Mixty Motions", "Can You Dig It", "I'll Be With You", "Things Are Getting Better", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". LP, Vinyl record album

A smoothed out late 70s set from Grover Washington Jr – a fairly slick affair of soul jazz – really honing in on the melodic soulful side of his sound for this one that balances a more crossover ready sound with spacier touches! The record features one a pop jazz take on "Just The Way You Are" that somehow works really well – or maybe we just can't beat off that tune's catchy melody as hard as we might want to. It also includes a nice version of "Loran's Dance", taken at a little faster tempo than Idris Muhammad's version, with some nice spacey synth floating around in the background, mellower numbers like the title track and "Maracas Beach" that are quite spare and nicely done. ✨✧ Grover Washington JrAll The King's Horses ... LP
Kudu, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Grover Washington's first albums as a leader – cut hot on the heels of some great work as a sideman, including some key funky dates with Charles Earland on Prestige! The sound here is a bit looser than some of Groover's smoother sides to come – a nice blend of his earthy jazz funk roots with the warmer sounds of the CTI/Kudu world – arranged and produced beautifully by keyboardist Bob James, who also plays both electric piano and harpsichord on the album! The cuts are a bit shorter than later on, but still totally tremendous – a sly, subtle approach to jazz funk that really took the keyboard/tenor mode into bold new territory for the 70s – a real genre-starting record that still sounds sublime all these many years later. Grover plays tenor and alto – no soprano sax yet – and other players include Richard Tee on organ, Billy Cobham or Bernard Purdie on drums, and Eric Gale or Cornell Dupree on guitar. Titles include "All The King's Horses", "Body & Soul", "Lean On Me", "Lover Man", "Love Song 1700", and "No Tears In The End". LP, Vinyl record album

A great run of music from Grover Washington Jr – five full albums, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Paradise – one of those records you see so much it's easy to forget how great it is! Grover's a real genius with the sax on this record – taking a "less is more" cue from Stanley Turrentine's 70s work, and toning down his playing to an even tighter style than on the Kudu albums of earlier years, to a level of ultimate economy that really leaves us breathless. Grover hits a rarified level here that we'd only reserve for a small few – like Steely Dan or The Crusaders, both groups who teeter on the same brink, and make it work perfectly. Titles include "Asia's Theme", "Tell Me About It Now", "Feel It Comin", "Icey", and "The Answer In Your Eyes". Winelight is a smooth smooth classic from Grover Washington Jr – a set that has a classy image on the cover, and a classic groove within – a completely sublime blend of jazz, soul, and funk, all given the sort of masterful finish that you might have found on the best records by The Crusaders at the time! The difference, though, is that Washington's the lead soloist throughout – crafting some especially nice lines on his trademark soprano sax – which he used in ways that made him one of the most important mainstream jazz artists of his time – and one of the few to really open the doors of the music to folks who might not have been listening otherwise. Grover's sense of space and timing is wonderful throughout – and titles include the classic debut with Bill Withers on "Just The Two Of Us" –plus "Winelight", "Let It Flow", "In The Name Of Love", "Take Me There", and "Make Me A Memory (Sad Samba)". On Come Morning, Grover Washington blows over some great arrangements from William Eaton – full, but lean too – and with the same sort of slinky groove that always worked best for Grover back at Kudu Records! The sound is tight, but never too slick – that magically soulful approach that always made Grover a real standout from his contemporaries – one of the few cats who could smooth out jazz without ever losing its soul – thanks to lots of well-crafted lead lines on soprano sax! Titles include "East River Drive", "Jamming", "Little Black Samba", "Be Mine", and "Reaching Out". Best Is Yet To Come is a set that strongly continues the special spirit that Grover Washington brought to his music during the Elektra Records years – as one of the few artists who really found a way to move forward from the style of 70s jazz funk, but not fall into some of the smoother jazz cliches that were about to envelop his contemporaries! Inside Moves has Washington soaring to the skies on soprano sax – as expressive a voice on the record as any soul singer might be – and maybe even more so on the few spots that do include vocals. Jon Lucien sings a bit on the record – and if you read these pages, you know how much we love him – but Grover's still the giant here, with a sense of timing and phrasing that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match in a setting like this. Titles include "Jet Stream", "Sassy Stew", "Dawn Song", "Inside Moves", "Watching You Watching Me", and "Secret Stew". 5CD set features 19 more bonus tracks – all the single edits of songs from the albums! ✨✧ Grover Washington JrInner City Blues ... CD
Kudu/Motown, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet funky jazz from Grover Washington – an early standout session from his classic years on Kudu Records, put together with hip arrangements from the mighty Bob James! The record's got the same spacious sense of grooving as James' first few for CTI – a style that's funky fusion, but a bit more laidback than most – not nearly as jamming, and with almost as much focus on lean rhythms as on key solos from the players in the group! Most tracks have a long, open sort of feel – and in addition to alto and tenor from Grover, other instrumentation includes organ from Richard Tee, guitar from Eric Gale, drums from Idris Muhammad, percussion from Airto, and electric piano from Bob James himself. Titles include versions of "Mercy Mercy Me", "Ain't No Sunshine/Theme From Man & Boy", "Until It's Time For You To Go", and "Inner City Blues". CD

Elektra, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
If there's anyone we trust with a fusion groove, it's the great Grover Washington – as Washington's 70s albums for Kudu are still the blueprint for mixing saxophone solos with electric jazzy backing – a rich legacy he continued strongly into later years! This early 80s set has Washington soaring to the skies on soprano sax – as expressive a voice on the record as any soul singer might be – and maybe even more so on the few spots that do include vocals. ✨✧ Grover Washington JrSecret Place ... LP
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nothing too secret about this record – given that it was one of Grover Washington's biggest hits of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album features four long tracks – all stretched out and layered together with washes of funky, yet subtle sounds – in a perfect blend that let Washington really stretch out on his solos, blowing with a great deal of soul over some hip instrumentation that includes Dave Grusin on electric piano, Anthony Jackson on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Ralph McDonald on percussion. There's a lean quality to the record that's completely sublime (why can't they make sets like this anymore?) – and although smooth, things are never slick – wonderfully soulful throughout, in that magic mode that Grover hit on a handful of key 70s albums! Titles include "A Secret Place", "Not yet", "Dolphin Dance", and "Love Makes It Better". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Grover Washington JrSoul Box Vol 2 ... LP
Kudu, 1973. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Most tracks are quite long – really stretching out with lots of room for fresh ideas – and titles include "Taurian Matador", "Don't Explain", "Easy Living/Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do", and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". ✨✧ Grover Washington JrMister Magic ... CD
Mo Jazz/Verve/Universal (Japan), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

Dexter GordonAmerican Classic ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint- ... $5.99
An unusual later set from the great Dexter Gordon – and a record that features the surprising addition of Hammond organ! Shirley Scott's on the record with Dex, and plays organ on half the cuts (Kirk Lightsey handles piano on the others) – bringing a soulful depth to the record which then seems to inspire Gordon to move into the sort of territory we might have expected from Stanley Turrentine back in the 60s! Grover Washington's on the record, blowing soprano sax on a few cuts with Scott – and reminding us of his deeper soul jazz roots – and other players include David Eubanks on bass and Eddie Gladden on drums. Titles include "Besame Mucho", "Skylark", "Sticky Wicket", and "For Soul Sister" – plus an interview with Dex! LP, Vinyl record album

Urbie GreenSenor Blues ... CD
CTI/King (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99 About March 12, 2025
A rare 70s funk outing for trombonist Urbie Green – a player who first made his name on cool jazz sessions of the 50s, but who really breaks out here with a whole new vibe! Green never stopped playing over the years – honing his craft on countless sessions for dozens of artists in the 60s and 70s – and here, he steps strongly back into the limelight amidst some very hip arrangements from David Matthews – whose funky vibe turns out to be a great fit for Green's sound! Musicians include Matthews on electric piano, John Scofield on guitar, and Grover Washington Jr on tenor and soprano sax – and Grover's soulful sound makes for a nice contrast to the more compressed tone of Green. The album includes versions of Charles Mingus' "Ysabel's Table Dance", Chick Corea's "Captain Marvel", and Horace Silver's "Senor Blues" – all done in slightly Latin electric-tinged styles! CD

Johnny HammondBreakout ... CD
CTI/King (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99 About March 12, 2025
A massive groover from the great Johnny Hammond – the famous 60s organist from the soul jazz scene, getting a whole new sound for the 70s here on the CTI label! Johnny was always one of those players who was ready to try something new – and the open, extended format of the label really helps him find new energy after his previous albums – to a level that points at his collaborations with Larry Mizell in years to come. The record's got arrangements by Grover Washington and Leo Johnson – on tracks that feature a complicated set of rhythms that push past the straighter funk grooves of Johnny's Prestige years. Drums and bass dance around nicely at the bottom, tenor and trumpet groove out the melody, and Johnny washes across the whole thing with some widemouth action on the organ! Titles include "Blues Selah", "Workin On A Groovy Thing", and "Breakout". CD

Shirley HornMay The Music Never End ... CD
Verve, 2003. Used ... $2.99
Stunning – and some of the best work we've ever heard from Shirley Horn! We know, we know – you've seen a bit too much of her in the jazz racks of late – but don't let that stop you from picking up this album, because it's amazing! Shirley returns to the spare, subtle simplicity of older albums like Travelin Light and Where Are You Going – working in a trio format that's so stripped down, so mellow, most of the work on the set is really just done by Shirley's vocals. And as when Shirley's singing at her best, the album is filled with tunes that you might have heard before – but which take on a whole new life and imagination in Shirley's hands. For some reason, she seems to find words in these songs we've never heard before – putting them over with new meanings, new emotions, and a sound that's incredibly sublime! Ahmad Jamal and Roy Hargrove make some slight guest appearances on the set, but forget about them – because the real magic is Shirley, sounding greater here than ever! Titles include "Forget Me", "Maybe September", "Everything Must Change", "May The Music Never End", "Take Love Easy", and "Watch What Happens". CD

Epic (France), 1976. Used ... $11.99 16.99
A killer all-star session of funky fusion tracks – with a nice tight sound produced by Skip Drinkwater! Yesterday's Dreams differs a little from Alphonso's other strong mid 70s efforts in that it's not as spacey as a whole – but the rubbery, cleanly funky grooves are just as strong – and the record as a whole makes for more of a showcase for his excellent group of players! Bassist Johnson leads the session, but there's a huge amount of guests, such as Grover Washington, Patrice Rushen, Mike Clark, and Sheila Escovedo. Plus, Jon Lucien, Diane Reeves, Flora Purim, and Phillip Bailey all sing on the record! Titles include "One To One", "As Little As You", "Scapegoat", "Show Us The Way", "Tales Of Barcelona", and the future soul classic "Love's The Way I Feel 'Bout Cha". CD

Elliot Kaplan/Les BaxterFood Of The Gods/Frogs ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1972/1976. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
Two very weird 70s soundtracks, back to back on a single CD – both for very offbeat movies about animals going wild! Elliot Kaplan handles the score for Food Of The Gods, which takes up two thirds of the CD – with music that often makes really cool use of horns with offbeat tones, which creates the sort of tension the folks in the audience must have felt as giant rats took the screen! There's 17 tracks from the film here – titles that include "Morgan Gets The Bird", "Worms Crawlin", "Rita's Pregnancy", "Rats Attack", "Lorna In Pit", and "More Rats Attack". Les Baxter handles the last third of the set – with tunes from the obscure 1972 film Frogs, done in a style that's very different than some of Baxter's famous exotica material! The main theme has these really spooky electronics in the mix – hardly a theme or song at all – and there's more electronics on other cuts too, almost like Les is in Andromeda Strain territory – although he throws in a groovy moment here and there. Titles include "Grover's Death", "Fourth Of July March", "Bella's Dance", "Frogs Piano", and "Main Title From Frogs". CD

Ralph MacDonaldCounterpoint ... CD
Marlin/Video Arts (Japan), 1979. Used ... $18.99
Maybe one of the most soul-based records ever from percussionist Ralph MacDonald – partly because Ralph does a bit of singing, in addition to playing the heavy congas on the cover! Yet the record's still got the core jazz vibe of his other sets from the late 70s – served up with an all-star lineup that includes Grover Washington Jr on soprano and tenor, David Sanborn on alto, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Michael Brecker on tenor, Richard Tee on keyboards, and Eric Gale on guitar – all musicians who help give the whole thing the warm funky fusion vibe of late 70s albums on labels like Kudo or Tappan Zee! Some of the best cuts slide into a snapping 80s groove that opens up nicely with the instrumentation – and Ralph only sings a bit, leaving plenty of room for solos from the players. Titles include the great Latin-inflected groover "East Dry River" – plus "You Are In Love", "I Need Someone", "Tell The Truth", and "Always Something Missing". CD

Ralph MacDonaldSound Of A Drum ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... About December 18, 2024 (delayed)
A crucial album from percussionist Ralph MacDonald – a set that not only catapulted him into the limelight, after strong work on countless records for other artists – but a record that also gave Ralph some long-standing fame, thanks to some key groovers on the set! The album's got a percussion-heavy take on funky fusion – never too over the top, but with more of an edge than some of the more polished 70s sessions on CTI or Columbia – although done with similar players who include Bob James on keyboards, Grover Washington Jr on soprano and tenor, Eric Gale on guitar, and Richard Tee on percussion. Ralph's congas are very strongly up in the mix – and heard to famous effect on the classic "Jam On The Groove", a killer break cut from the old days, as well as a nice version of "Mister Magic", plus the tracks "Calypso Breakdown", "Sound Of A Drum", and "Where Is The Love". These artists are all strong individualists in their own way, but come together here with a very unified spirit that really helps things soar – on the kind of record that might have been missed at the moment, thanks to an understated cover – but which really shows the great new fires that were burning in American jazz a the time. A grand connection from David Matthews – one of the keyboardist's fusion sets for the Japanese Electric Bird label, who gave Matthews a great showcase for his electric grooves in the 80s! The sound here is kind of an extension of the funky electric big band sides that Matthews scored for Kudu and CTI in the late 70s – smoother than his funky work from the early days, in the Japanese fusion style of the time, but with a bit more big band leanings – given a slightly larger lineup. Players include Grover Washington Jr on tenor and soprano sax, George Young on alto and flute, Gerry Niewood on tenor and flute, Joe Shepley on trumpet, Mark Egan on bass, and Earl Klugh on guitar – and titles include "Sugar", "Sails Of Your Soul", "Begin The Beguine", and "Soft & Funky". The performance is from a live date at the Blue Note, with Bill Cosby acting as the MC at a few points – and Moody plays tenor and alto, with a combo that features Mulgrew Miller on piano, Tod Coolman on bass, and Terri Lynne Carrington on drums – plus help from guest musicians who include Roy Ayers on vibes, Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Chris Potter on tenor, and Grover Washington Jr on soprano sax. The overall vibe is mostly boppish, a bit less complex and varied than some of Moody's other late albums – and titles include "The Eternal Triangle", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Benny's From Heaven", "Bebop", and "Groovin High".
