Hamilton De Holanda & Orquestra Do Mato GrossoAlegria ... CD
Brasilianos (Brazil), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
One of the most playful albums we've ever heard from Hamilton De Holanda – a set that features the master instrumentalist on 10 string bandolim, in front of some larger orchestrations – but on tunes that are pulled from a variety of pop culture sources, including some surprising entries from cartoons and video games! Hamilton's command of his instrument is still fantastic – beautifully expressive, and always doing a heck of a lot with just a little – and the larger orchestrations are thoughtfully handled by Leandro Carvalho, in a way that never dims the presence of the lead instrument, but instead inflects its sound with just the right sense of color and space. Titles include "Sitio Do Pica Pau Amarelo", "A Pantera Cor De Rosa", "Super Mario Brothers", "Os Flinstones", "Vida Alegria E Esperanca", and "Dorme Com Os Anjos". CD

Wayne ShorterMoto Grosso Feio ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $15.99
A perfect illustration of the rich new directions Wayne Shorter was taking at the start of the 70s – an amazing flurry of sounds and styles that's light years ahead of where he began in the 60s! Shorter's one of those players who was already great at the start – an amazing tenorist, both on his own and with the groups of Art Blakey and Miles Davis – yet by the time of this record, he'd absorbed a huge amount of influences from Brazilian music, modal jazz, the spiritual underground, and even the free European scene – all of which come to play on the long, complex tunes on the set! The record has Shorter working with some other key contemporaries of this new moment in jazz – John McLaughlin on 12 string guitar, Chick Corea on marimba and percussion, Dave Holland and Miroslav Vitous on bass, and Ron Carter on cello – all players who have the same open, exploratory vibe as Wayne's own lines on tenor and soprano sax. Titles include an excellent cover of Milton Nascimento's "Vera Cruz", plus the tracks "Antiqua", "Iska", and "Montezuma". CD

✨✧ Gerry Mulligan & Bob BrookmeyerGerry Mulligan & Bob Brookmeyer Play Phil Sunkel's Jazz Concerto Grosso ... LP
ABC, 1957. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A complicated suite of tunes performed with Mulligan and Brookmeyer in the lead – and some occasional solos by Sunkel on cornet! The overall feel steps strongly from both Mulligan and Brookmeyer's styles of the mid 50s – tightly arranged, but with ample enough room for solo expression in a cooler, west coast modern mode. Side one features the extended "Jazz Concerto Grosso", and side two features two long titles – "Song For Cornet" and "Something For The Ladies". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some minor seam splitting.)

Chano PozoRumbero Mayor – An Overview Of The Legendary Afro-Cuban Conguero That Changed Latin Music & Jazz Forever ... LP
Grosso! (Spain), 1940s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99
A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. VariousRoots Of Salsa Vol 3 – Classic Latin Tunes Become Salsa Hits (with bonus CD) ... LP
Grosso! (Spain), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $28.99
A great little series that goes way deeper than the salsa you might expect from the title – as the approach here is to pick tracks from many years before, but which still have strong resonance with the pride and power of the Latin scene of the 70s! The collection includes lots of tracks that might come as a real surprise – some larger orchestra material, tracks by trios, and other Latin styles that aren't normally associated with the spirit of salsa – which usually seems to draw most from the descarga years, and the small combos to emerge in the 60s. Instead, this series traces the music much farther back – and includes loads of hard-edged cuts that resonate surprisingly well with later salsa dura – including many records that you might have otherwise passed by! Tracks on this third volume include "Me Voy Pa Pinar Del Rio" by Orquesta Riverside, "La Jicotea" by Rosendo Ruiz, "Suena Tu Bongo" by Roberto Faz, "Guaguanco A Todos Los Barrios" by Conjunto Estrellas De Chocolate, "Guarare" by Noro Morales, "Pao Pao" by Monchito & His Mambo Royals, "Pa'Chismoso Tu" by Rene Touzet, "Aprietala En El Rincon" by Cheo Marquetti, and "Arinanara" by La Orquesta Casino De La Playa. Gene AmmonsBad Bossa Nova (aka Jungle Soul) ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... $6.99
Bad Bossa Nova is right – as Gene Ammons really hits a great groove here – one that's not exactly bossa, but which has lots of Latin and tropical touches! The session makes great use of 2 guitars at the same time – using that of Kenny Burrell for soulful rhythm, but also adding in Bucky Pizzarelli for some nice acoustic embellishments – in a mode that's similar to the soul jazz-com-bossa style used on records like Ike Quebec's Soul Samba or Charlie Rouse's Bossa Nova Bacchanal. The overall rhythms are a bit more complicated, and a bit more soul jazz based than those sets – with Hank Jones on piano, Oliver Jackson on percussion, and Al Hayes adding in some sweet extra bongo! Titles include the classic "Ca'Purange" – plus "Anna", "Yellow Bird", "Cae Cae", and "Moito Mato Grosso". Also issued under the title Jungle Soul! (Ca' Purange). CD

BirdBird – Limited Edition ... CD
Realeyes (Japan), 1999. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Beautiful work from the lovely Japanese singer Bird! Despite a light-sounding name, Bird's one of Japan's most soulful artists – and we'd rank her right up there with Monday Michiru for richness of talent, and strength in interpreting a song. The big difference is that she sings mostly in Japanese – so that you can't hear her lyrics as well if you're an Americano like us – but thanks to some killer funky backgrounds by Shinichi Osawa of Mondo Grosso, the album grooves like a monster, and you don't even care what Bird's saying! Really great stuff – with that strident soulful feel of the best Japanese work of the past few years, and a rock solid album all the way through, especially if you dug the MG4 album by Mondo Grosso. Monday MichiruDouble Image ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1998. New Copy ... $13.99
A real turning point for Monday Michiru – a set that has the Japanese singer moving into more complex rhythms than some of the straighter soul of her initial releases – really keeping things interesting as she stretches out lyrically too! Monday arranged and produced most of the record – although she also has help from some great guests, as was common in her early years – a lineup that includes DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso, Byron Wallen, and The Angel – all of whom add some creative energy to the project. There's a touch of drum and bass in the mix at times, but the key highlight is Monday's great sense of song and her fantastic vocals – soaring out as one of the few late 90s audiences who can take things over the top to a whole new audience. Cuts include "Reflexions", "You Make Me", "Island Of The Saints", "Method 2 The Madness", "Double Image", and "Scheme Of Things". CD

Kitty (Japan), 1994. Used ... $11.99
Another one of Monday Michiru's excellent collaborative efforts with some of the best modern talents in the acid jazz/abstract vibes realm. The album includes some killer tracks in which Monday's smooth soulful voice is mixed with backgrounds by the likes of DJ Krush, Ray Hayden (Opaz), Anton Fier & Bill Laswell, and Shinchi Osawa of Mondo Grosso. Includes a cool remix of "Maiden Voyage", plus "Comfort Of Strangers", "Is This How It Feels", and "When I'm With You". More excellent work by Monday, and although the record's a few years old, it's still some of the best work in the acid jazz vein to come out of the 90's! CD

Monday Michiru & OthersCo-Collaborator Works Of Monday Michiru ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2007. New Copy ... $13.99
Great grooves from Monday Michiru – a Soul Source collection that brings together a wealth of Monday's dancefloor work with a host of other artists! The tunes here are all upbeat and nicely grooving – very much that soulful Soul Source dancefloor vibe – and the package is a nice reminder that although Monday's been hitting some great mellow notes of late, she's also still one of the best club-oriented talents from the Japanese scene. A number of these tracks are from hard to find singles, and collaborators here include Da Lata, Jazztronik, Soul Source, Masters At Work, Joe Claussell, and Mondo Grosso. Titles include "Butterfly" by Mondo Grosso with Monday Michiru, "You Make Me (Studio Apartment rmx)" by Monday Michiru, "The Right Time (Jephte's King Street vokal)" by Monday Michiru, "The Real Thing" by Soul Source Productions with Monday Michiru, "Tiger Eyes (English version)" by Jazztronik with Monday Michiru, "New Beginnings" by Monday Michiru with Da Lata, "ADDP" by M-Flo with Monday Michiru, "Sunshine After The Rain (MAW 12" mix)" by Monday Michiru, and "Higher (Spiritual Life voc)" by Monday Michiru with Joe Claussell. Sabu & His Jungle PercussionistsJungle Percussion ... LP
Clarity, Late 50s. Very Good- ... $5.99
The cover lists Sabu – but we've been told that it's not Sabu Martinez, but someone named Subri Moulin, with the name misprinted from the original RKO recording. Still sounds like some of Sabu's exotica albums, though, with lots of heavy percussion, in a loud jungle drumming kind of frenzy. The production is pretty spare, and the album doesn't really have any jazz aspects – but it's not a bad record in the afrodrumorgy kind of way. Titles include "Sha Sha Calor", "Capinian", "Zulu", "Guaguaco", "Mato Grosso", and "Moondongo". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A single soundtrack – but one that features killer work from a host of the best Italian composers of the scene at the time – including Stelvio Cipriani, Carlo Rustichelli, and Daniele Patucchi – all of whom come up with some great electric funk for the set! The mix of composers makes for a nicely wide sound – and it's as if everyone brought their best few tracks to the session – picking out the sort of choice funky and jazzy numbers that usually are the standout tracks on other Italian film scores – working together here to make one heck of a mighty record! Titles include "Night Mood", "Chicago 80", "Santos Club", "Mato Grosso", "Verso L'Ignoto", "Il Mio Sguardo E Uno Specchio", "Tema Di Anna", and "Il Giardino Degli Angeli". Polysom (Brazil), 2019. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Brazilian singer Elba Ramalho is still going strong – and maybe sounding better than ever, partly due to a matured quality in her vocals – which makes things sometimes sound deeper than in the early years! The style here is a mix of older forro elements with more contemporary touches – accordion a bit in the background on more numbers, surrounded by electric elements that emphasize some of the more soulful currents in the music – while the lady herself stands strongly in the spotlight. The set features guest appearances by Ney Matogrosso and Roberta Sa – and titles include "Girassol", "Calcanhar", "Na Areia", "Princesa Domeu Lugar", "Oxente", "Setudo Pode Acontecer", and "O Mundo".
