✨✧ VariousMove With The Groove – Hardcore Chicago Soul 1962 to 1970 – The One-Der-Ful/Mar-V-Lus Story ... CD
One Der Ful/Charly (UK), 1960s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal soul from one of Chicago's greatest labels in the 60s – the One-Der-Ful/Mar-V-Lus imprints, plus tracks from related Toddlin Town too – home to some of the best indie work at the time! The quality here is right up there with the best you'd hear from Chess, Okeh, or Brunswick in the 60s – no surprise, since the pair of labels shared lots of similar talents with the bigger companies – as well as session men, songwriters, and producers too! The full scope of Chicago soul is really covered here – upbeat groovers for the dancefloor, heartfelt ballads with great harmonies, and some of the harder-edged bluesy numbers that really helped put One-Der-Ful on the map! There's also some key early examples of funk – proof that in the 60s, Chicago was one of the hippest scenes in the world – and the set comes with 2 CDs, nestled in a hardback booklet of notes and photos – with a whopping 50 tracks in all. Titles include "Tired Of Being Lonely" by The Sharpees, "Without You" by The Ulti-Mations, "That's How It Is" by Otis Clay, "Keep On Dancin" by Alvin Cash, "The Funky Judge" by Bull & The Matadors, "I Get A Groove" by Thomas East & The Fabulous Playboys, "Damper Down" by Bobby Davis, "The Town I Live In" by McKinley Mitchell, "Come Back Home" by Beny Turner, "Master Key" by Harold Burrage, "If I Could Live My Life All Over" by Dorothy Prince, "You Told A Lie" by Johnny Sayles, "New Girl" by The Accents, and "Don't You Worry" by Joe & Mack. Loleatta HollowayLove Sensation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Salsoul/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $24.99
Landmark club grooves from the great Loleatta Holloway – and a record that definitely has her at the top of the disco game for the 70s! Holloway's working here with a nice variety of arrangers and producers – including Bobby Womack, Norman Harris, Dan Hartman, and Tom Washington – each of whom add some sweet little touches that let Holloway's vocals really take off, and find a space that's even more proud and powerful than ever before! Rhythms have an incessant Salsoul groove – that great approach that was often tightly funky at the core, and which really helped transform a key few singers like Holloway – taking them to the clubs, but without losing any of the depth of their roots. Key proof of this is the sublime leadoff track – "Love Sensation" – one of the greatest Salsoul tracks ever, and maybe one of the best female disco numbers too. The cut's a monster, one of the most anthemic dance tracks of all time – and it's followed by other good numbers that include "Two Became a Crowd", "My Way", and "Short End of the Stick". CD features bonus tracks – 6 more mixes of "Love Sensation", including "Tom Moulton 12", "unreleased Tom Moulton", "Shep Pettibone 12"", "Shep Pettibone 12" rough", and "acapella". CD

Various100 Club Anniversary Singles 6Ts – 1979 to 2009 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A killer batch of rare soul tracks – mostly from the 60s, and all numbers that were originally pressed up on very limited 45s for the members of London's soul-based 100 Club! Rarity aside, the tracks are all pretty darn great – very well-chosen bits of dancefloor soul, with a groove that stretches out nicely past the typical Northern vibe – proof that the 100 Club were always trying to explore fresh territory with their efforts! Many of these cuts are from unreleased master tapes from American 60s indies – pulled specially from the vaults of Ace/Kent, and issued as 45s for the club's annual birthday celebration – presented here in a package that has plenty of great grooves to offer for any fan of rare soul music. Titles include "Come Through Me" by Garland Green, "Hey Stoney Face" by Mary Love, "The Magic Touch" by Melba Moore, "Love Has Passed Me By" by Phil Terrell, "I'll Never Stop Loving You" by Carla Thomas, "This Man Wants You" by Wally Cox, "Good News" by The Hytones, "Get To Steppin" by Jackie Day, "What's One More Lie" by Milton Bennett, "Doin The Gittin Up" by The Devonnes, "Faith & Understanding" by The Magicians, and "Ain't You Glad" by Mill Evans. VariousMidwest Funk – Funk 45s From Tornado Alley ... CD
Jazzman/Stones Throw, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Quite possibly one of the greatest funk compilations ever – and we're not just saying that because we're from the Midwest! The genius compilers at Jazzman spent years scouring the smaller cities of the American hinterlands – tracking down obscure musicians, long-lost labels, and nearly-gone master tapes – all to bring together 23 bits of rare funk that bristle with the same energy and excitement as the day they were first recorded! The package is incredible – not only filled with incredible tunes that somehow manage to push the boundaries and redefine our understanding of classic funk from the time, but also doing so in a package that's filled with liner notes that offer more information on the artists than probably their own mothers know! Plus, the set's also got some previously unissued numbers as well – making it a must-have for any funk fan, even if you've somehow managed to track down original copies of some of these choice bits! Titles include "Whip It" by The New Establishment In Soul, "Let's Do It Today (full version)" by The Us, "Pushin To The Top" by Markus Kelly & The Impassions, "Sissy Walk" by Billy Ball & The Upsetters, "Tell Her" by Fred Williams & The Jewels Band, "The Hatch" by The TMGs, "Boots Groove" by The Soul Tornados, "Po Boy's Dream" by Illinois Connection, "It's Not You For Me (live)" by Billy Joe Holloman, "Funky In Here" by Dayton Sidewinders, "Master Groove" by Henry Peters & The Imperials, and "A Day In The Life" by Chocolate Snow. ✨✧ Norman ConnorsThis Is Your Life ... LP
Arista, 1977. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of modern soul from Norman Connors – proof that he was still growing and changing as an artist, continuing to push his groove into whole new areas as the 70s progressed. The record takes the smooth jazzy sound of the earlier Buddah sides, sharpens it into a more sophisticated modern soul style, fused with a bit of a quiet storm vocal approach, to create a wonderfully mature album of silky soul tracks. Part of the strength comes from the vocalists – who include Eleanor Mills and Jean Carn – and Norman also does a bit of singing on the record, and comes across surprisingly well. Tracks include "Stella", "This Is Your Life", "Wouldn't You Like To See", "Butterfly", "Captain Connors", and a wonderful jazzy soul reworking of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". ✨✧ Oliver NelsonSkull Session ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic transformation of the Oliver Nelson sound of the 60s – a large ensemble record that takes all the soul of his earlier groove, and reworks it with a more electric vibe for the 70s! Nelson's at the height of his powers here – working brilliantly as a leader and arranger, to open the door for strong sounds from younger players like Mike Wofford and Lonnie Liston Smith on keyboards, and the great Dennis Budimir on guitar! The record's unlike most of what you'll hear on Nelson's other albums – even his other Flying Dutchman work of the time – as it's got loads of wonderful keyboard moments, and even some moog and Arp as well. Titles include "Skull Session", "125th And 7th Ave", "Flight For Freedom", "Baja Bossa", and "Dumpy Mama". CD

Verve, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
No hokey organ grinder here – no monkey on a leash, begging for change on a street corner – just a smoking little trio session that stands as one of the best records that Jimmy Smith ever recorded for Verve! The album's got a groove that's similar to Jimmy's early years at Blue Note – long, stretched-out tracks – played by a trio that features Kenny Burrell on guitar and Grady Tate on drums, with lots of room left for Jimmy to cook up mighty solos on the Hammond! There's loads of little twists and turns that make the session shine nicely – and titles include "Oh No, Babe", "Blues for J", "Greensleeves", and "The Organ Grinder's Swing". CD

✨✧ Bernard WrightNard ... LP
Arista/GRP, 1981. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of smooth jazzy funk – and super-hip session headed up by the young keyboardist Bernard Wright! Wright's working here with an insider crowd of jazz funk players that includes Bobby Broom, Dave Grusin, Marcus Miller, and Don Blackman, whose funky style is very similar to Wright's. The record sort of picks up the groove where some of the Fantasy Records sessions of the 70s left off – mixing together jazz and soul into a captivating blend that's made even better by Dave Grusin's tight production. And despite what you might think about the crap that Grusin headed up later in the 80s, the early days of the GRP label were amazing years for jazz funk. Includes Don Blackman's sample classic "Haboglabotribin", a nice version of Weldon Irvine's "Music Is The Key", and the cuts"Just Chillin' Out", "Master Rocker", and "Bread Sandwiches". Great all the way through, though – and a record that still delights us year after year! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBack To The Scene Of The Crime – Joey Negro Compilation Vol 2 ... CD
Azuli (UK), 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another really hot batch of jazzy club groove, and thumping brilliance compiled by Joey Negro! The set list for the most part blends some of the more lively bands in the club underground, like Sessomatto, Blaze and others with remixes and re-edits of the 70s master class members like MFSB and Brick. Needless to say, Negro is a wizard at this sort of thing, and the groove is seamless from front to back! 13 tracks: "American Dream" by Jakatta, "Moody" by Sessomatto, "We Gonna Make It" by Benjamin Diamond, "K-Gee (re-edit)" by MFSB, "Feel The Need" by Lab Rats, "Wonderland" by Atlanta, "Dancin'" by Doug Willis, "Livin' For The Mind (re-edit)" by Brick, "New York City Woman" by Sunburst, "Wishin' you Were Here" by Blaze, "I Know You, I Live You" by Yolanda Wyns and more! An early breakthrough for ZZ Top – a raucous hard electric blues rock classic that was popular at the time, if not critically beloved – finally getting its deserved respect nowadays for timeless grit and groove! The opening couple of classics "Waitin' For The Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago" flow one to the other seamlessly and set the mood perfectly, and it's pretty much one great tune after another from there, including "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", "Master Of Sparks", "Hot, Blue And Righteous", "Move Me On Down The Line", "Precious And Grace", the almighty, never to diminish "La Grange", "Sheik" and "Have You Heard". Michael Henderson lays down some great bass work on the set, and major solos are by Sonny Fortune, Pete Cosey, and Reggie Lucas! ✨✧ Kay-GeesKeep On Bumpin' & Masterplan ... LP
Gang, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The Kay-Gees' funkiest record ever – a set that's harder and sharper than anything else they'd ever record in years to come! Grabbing this one up is like finding a lost Kool & The Gang album from the early years – which is no surprise, since Ronald Bell of the group produced, and wrote a lot of the songs with the group – maybe acting as their mentor, and definitely giving the young group a great showcase for their boundless energy, and tight skills in the groove department! The band are incredibly tight – with lots of hard drums, choppy guitar, and the rolling party feel that made Kool & The Gang so great during their best years – captured here with a similarly raw production style. There's some great horns that blast in and out, sounding very off-beat at the best moments – like the classic "Who's the Man With the Master Plan", sampled by YZ many years ago – or other funky cuts like "Ain't No Time", "Get Down", and "You've Got to Keep on Bumpin". ✨✧ Little AnnDetroit's Secret Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever! You might recognize Ann's name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years – and the work here all comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album – but only issued in full all these many years later! The groove here is as offbeat as some of Dave's other great work – not nearly as tight, or uptight, as Motown music – and instead, done with a sly undercurrent of darkness on most numbers, even the mellower ones – almost that earliest mix of Detroit styles that you get on pre-fame singles from Westbound Records artists. Ann's vocals are nice and lean, and slide right into the mix with ease – heartfelt enough to grab us right away, yet without any obvious cliches as well. Titles include "What Should I Do", "Who Are You Trying To Fool", "The Smile On Your Face", "Stand Together", "I'm Doin All Right", "Lost A Lover", "That's All I want From You", and "I Got To Have You" – plus the unissued versions "Possession (master edit)", "Deep Shadows (multi mix)", and "Sweet It Out In The Shed (master tape)". PLUS – this CD features 9 more instrumental versions of the tunes by the Dave Hamilton Band – most issued here for the first time ever – plus three more alternates of album tracks! CD

One of our favorite records of all time – an incredible soundtrack from the legendary Sven Libaek, served up in a swirling blend of vibes, flute, guitar, and organ – all with a bubbly, watery feel that's totally amazing! The album's easily one of the greatest from the Australian scene of the 70s – originally penned for a film of underwater adventure, but a treasure trove of groove that easily stands next to any of the best American or Italian soundtracks of the time. Libaek's approach is really unique – almost soft on the attack, which creates a really strong flow in the music – always warm, always rhythmic, and plenty darn groovy – thanks to the incredible instrumentation on the set! Players include Don Burrows and Errol Buddle on flutes, Col Nolan on organ, John Sangster on vibes, George Golla on guitar, and Sven himself on piano – and titles include "Inner Space", "Music For Eels", "Sounds Of The Deep", "Nocturnal Lullaby", "Danger Reef", "Seasnakes", "Midget Monsters", "Beche De Mer", "Attacking Sharks", "Inner Space", and "Turtlemusic". ✨✧ WhispersLove For Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Solar/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Love for Love, but still a pretty groove-heavy set too – one that continues the mix of "dancin and romancin" The Whispers served up on their previous album! Side one is heavy on "dancin" – and features some bass-heavy tunes that are very much in the best mainstream LA soul modes of the time – production by the group and Leon Sylvers, all in a sound that's heavy on basslines and keyboards, but which still has harmonies that are way ahead of most of the group's younger contemporaries! These harmonies come into play even more strongly on the "romancin" side of the record – a batch of ballads that have The Whispers in the mellower territory that first got them started – updated slightly here with an early 80s soul vibe, but sung with proof that the quintet were still at the top of the harmony game. Titles include "Tonight", "Keep On Lovin Me", "This Time", "Had It Not Been For You", "Try It Again", "Lay It On Me", and "Keep Your Love Around". CD features bonus tracks – "Tonight (single)", "Keep On Lovin Me (single)", and "This Time (single)". CD

Play Time (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $32.99
Some of the funkiest, grooviest sounds we've ever heard from Francis Lai – the French film composer who gave the world the soundtracks for Love Story and A Man & A Woman – but who comes across here in a style that's more like some of the best British and Italian sound library material of his generation! Most tracks have a mod, upbeat groove – jerking rhythms, sweet soulful instrumentation, and occasional chorus vocals that round things out with a very cool vibe. We recognize a few of these tracks from some of Lai's ultra-rare soundtracks (some never issued on vinyl at all) – but others are more obscure – and the set features the tracks "Keep It Cool", "Party Music", "Whitechapel", "Las Vegas Circus Ballet", "Saint Tropez", and "Cinq Pour L'Aventure". Stax/Craft, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD & 7 inch ... $46.99 59.99
An incredible tribute to the genius of Memphis Soul legend Issac Hayes – one that's overflowing with unreleased material, and presented in a totally cool package! The set's shaped like a 7" single box – and is book-like, with very detailed notes by Stax historian Robert Gordon, alongside page after page of vintage photos and other cool images, too. And inside some of the pages are 4 super-cool CDs – each of which has a different theme that further exposes Ike's genius! CD1 is titled "Soul Songwriter Soul Producer" – and features two dozen tracks that Hayes handled for Stax/Volt – material by The Astors, Danny White, David Porter, Floyd Newman, Johnnie Taylor, Charlie Rich, Judy Clay, The Charmels, Soul Children, Billy Eckstine, The Emotions, Ruby Johnson, and others. CD2 is titled "Volt & Enterprise Singles" – and features all the 7" tracks released by Isaac Hayes during his time on those labels – including two tracks done as a duet with David Porter, two more as Sir Isaac & The Do-Dads, and even a rare Radio Spot too! Things really get interesting on CD3, titled "Cover Man" – which features those cool, long extrapolations of other folks' songs that Hayes pioneered on his albums – but included here with unreleased material too. There's a great never-heard take on "Windows Of The World" – plus unreleased PUSH Black Expo material from 1970 – live takes on "Ten Commandments Of Love", "Just Want To Make Love To You/Rock Me Baby", "I Stand Accused", and "Stormy Monday". CD4 is maybe the coolest of the bunch – titled "Jam Master", with those long grooves that Ike did in the studio while putting together records. Almost all the tracks on CD4 are previously unissued – including "You've Made Me So Very Happy", "Black Militant's Place", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Do Your Thing (extended jam)", "Groove A Thon (extended jam)", and "Hung Up On My Baby (extended jam)". And if all that isn't enough, the set even comes with a cool 7" replica of Ike's first single for the Youngstown label – "Laura We're On Our First Go-Round". CD

The album's got a tightness that's almost impossible to believe – a summation of all the best bop trends of the 50s, rolled into a freewheeling and soulful expression, guided by Mobley's always-sharp ear for a groove. The group's great too – and Art Blakey is on drums, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and a young young Freddie Hubbard plays trumpet. Rare early work from Hannibal Marvin Peterson – doing it live at the Burning Bush in Denton, TX in November of 1968, around the time Peterson was still a student at North Texas State University – an incredible formative live document of one of the great soul jazz players, in a more soul & early funk inspired groove than the more exploratory style to come! The set's credited to Marvin Peterson & The Soulmasters – aptly billed, we might add – and it's a mix of organ funk, a more slow cooking number or two, and a couple nods to James Brown style funk soul! Marvin, not yet billed as Hannibal, is on trumpet and he sings on his own "Five Foot Seven" and also contributes some vocals to the JB cover "I Can't Stand It". Tim Peterson is on sax and flute, penned the set opening "Groove For Otis" and co-wrote "Our Groove" with Peterson. BBE (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A really joyous collection of grooves selected by Alex Attias – work that's maybe even more uplifting than the first volume in this series – and we really liked that one a heck of a lot too! Most of the tracks are relatively contemporary – selected by Attias from the work of underground colleagues over the past few years – and they're put together in a way that's even more than the sum of their mighty parts – the kind of careful ear for a well-selected track list that reminds us of the sort of albums that made us first fall in love with the BBE label many years back! In a world of dark corners and uncertainty, this is a set that will help you find the way forward, and have a hell of a good time doing it – thanks to tracks that include "Gwotet (Alex Attias LillyGood Party edit)" by David Murray & The Gwo-Ka Masters with Pharoah Sanders, "Open Up Your Mind (Honeycomb voc mix)" by Universal Tongues feat Elle, "Star Child Going Home" by MJ Lallo, "Freedom Flight (Alex Attias LillyGood Party edit)" by Mausiki Scales, "Children Of The World (Ben Brophy edit)" by Elements Of Life feat Josh Milian, "Touch" by 12 Senses, "Playground" by Martin Iverson with Sarai Jazz, "Everything (Yam Who rework)" by Dwayne Morgan, and "How Bad I Want Ya (GU peak tru time mix)" by Stacy Kidd with Peven Everett. P-Vine (Japan), 1970s/2016. New Copy ... $22.99
Fantastic funky tracks from host of different sources – all brought together by Japanese DJ Ryuhei The Man – and served up in a blinding mix of tracks that flow effortlessly from one to the other! Most of the work is from the 70s, but there's a few more contemporary cuts in the mix, too – but the overall feel is hard 70s funk – usually of the funky 45 variety, but often with a more extended groove – as a number of these cuts are from rare album sources, which means that there's some great extended jams on the collection – plenty of heavy drums, wah wah guitars, rumbling basslines, and sweet keyboards! Titles include "Scorpio" and "Kashmere" by Kashmere Stage Band, "My Friend" by Ricardo Marrero & The Group, "Monkey Hips & Rice" by Wooden Glass featuring Billy Wooten, "The Crisis Generator" by The Sound Stylistcis, "Panama" and "Jessica" by Roy Porter Sound Machine, "Chief" by Lettuce, "Deeper Love" by Funkshone, "Your Love Is Mine (Nostalgia 77 rmx)" by New Mastersounds, "I'm Back For More" by Leo's Sunship, "Discover Disco Lover" by The Jazzinvaders, and "Humpty Dumpty" by Placebo. Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Don't let the title fool you, as the set was recorded in the Barclay studios in Paris – but the record is definitely Chicago all the way through – as Hubert Sumlin plays guitar and sings – in a combo with Willie Mabon on piano and Lonnie Brooks on second guitar! By this point in his career, Sumlin's had years of experience in the Chicago clubs – and he definitely evokes that scene here with his confident, yet relaxed performance on all the tunes – never forcing things at all, and resisting any urge to pander for an overseas audience. Titles include "I Wonder Why", "Groove", "Easy Hubert Easy", "Broke & Hungry", "Give The Name Jacquot", and "My Guitar & Me". CD features three bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ James BrownIn The Jungle Groove ... LP
Polydor, Early 70s/1986. Very Good+ 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Massive – and one of the best James Brown compilations ever, filled with rare and unreleased material! This completely essential set features tracks pulled from James' best years ever – the mighty early 70s, when he was working with the JBs, and laying down tracks that would forever change the face of funk! The tunes on the album are right up there with the best work on classic albums like The Payback, Doin It To Death, Hot Pants, and any of the other killer Polydor funk albums by James – and most of them were pulled from sessions for those records, and brought together in this format for the first time in the late 80s. The centerpiece of the set is a 9 minute version of "Funky Drummer", and other highlights include new versions of "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose (remix)", "Soul Power (mono re-edit)", and "Talkin' Loud & Sayin' Nothin (remix)". The set's also got bonus beats of "Funky Drummer", a long single take of "Hot Pants (She Got To Use What She Got To Get What She Wants)" (8:42 minutes long!), and the nice rare track "I Got To Move" – previously unreleased, and nice and long! ✨✧ Donald ByrdSlow Drag (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful stuff – and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through – recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you'll hardly find on any of Byrd's other albums from the time. A lot of the credit is due to Sonny Red – who plays with a raspy tone that's odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd's solo skills. Walton's got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some great grooves – and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically, yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms. Includes the Blue Break classic "Jelly Roll", the amazing jazz dancer "Book's Bossa", and the sublime "Slow Drag", one of the strangest groovers you'll ever hear! CD

The set's a mix of arrangements from Ernie Wilkins, and a few more by Neal Hefti – both in that masterful sense of space that helped this Basie band really isolate its key soloists on record – not just the Count's fantastic lines on piano, but also work from Freddie Greene on guitar, Joe Newman and Thad Jones on trumpets, Benny Powell on trombone, Marshall Royal on alto, and both Frank Wess and Frank Foster on tenor and flute! Eugene BlacknellWe Can't Take Life For Granted ... CD
Luv N' Haight/Ubiquity, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.98
A massive amount of rare work from East Bay funk maestro Eugene Blacknell – an artist who never cut a full album, but managed to record a lot of great funky tracks over the years! This package is the first ever full length set to focus on Eugene's work, and it's a treasure trove of guitar-heavy groovers – starting with some rough-edged, raw R&B-styled funk – then moving into some fuller party funk and boogie-styled numbers! Eugene's guitar is fully in the lead on most tracks – and the vibe of the later work is in a space that's somewhere between Bootsy Collins and Shuggie Otis – a very good place to be, in our opinion. The package was done in collaboration with Eugene's son, and features rare singles, remastered cuts, and even some exclusive and live tracks that have never seen the light of day before. The set features a whopping 25 tracks in all, all with great notes on Eugene's music and story – and titles that include "Cousin John", "Mo Self", "Jump Back", "Getting Down", "The Trip", "Dance To The Rhythm", "For The Sake Of Love", "Jive Kinda Friends", "Wah Wah Funk", "Space Funk", "Don't Stop Now", "Grov-ve Monkey", and even a few rare radio spots! Funky trumpet galore – and one of the few albums ever cut by trumpeter Billy Brooks as a leader! At the time of this 1974 LP, Billy Brooks was an overlooked LA trumpeter working in the Ray Charles band – and although this record didn't bring him instant fame when it was released, it's grown to become a groove classic over time – thanks to a really unique approach to funky jazz that's even different than early 70s material on labels like CTI or Prestige! The standout cut is the sample track "Forty Days" – a masterpiece of jagged drums and floating horn work, sampled to great fame by Tribe Called Quest, and instantly famous for years after. The whole album's great, though – a funky big band mix of electric and acoustic playing, with some really mad numbers that feature a lineup that includes Herman Riley on tenor, Calvin Keys on guitar, and Lonnie Shelter on flute – plus some cool electronics from Billy, in addition to his trumpet. Tracks include "Shetter Cheeze", "Good News Blues", "Cooling It", "Black Flag", "Shetter Cheeze", and "CP Time". CD

A fantastic late 70s album from James Brown – maybe one of his last true classics of the decade! The vibe's shifted a bit since the Payback era, but the sound is still totally great – as James is working closely here with Charles Sherrell (aka Sweet Charles) – in a style that's slightly different than his work with Fred Wesley or Maceo, but no less funky overall! There's still loads of sharp angles and gritty elements in the grooves – and titles include the tasty cut "If You Don't Give a Doggone About It", done with the JBs, one that has a nice choppy "Doin It To Death" sort of groove – plus "People Who Criticize", "Give Me Some Skin", "Have A Happy Day", "Bessie", "Summertime", "People Wake Up & Live", and "Take Me Higher & Groove Me". Possibly the greatest album ever by the legendary Chicago soul singer Terry Callier! Terry's rich mellow voice is mixed with superb arrangements from the Cadet studio team, with Charles Stepney at the head, and the result is completely sublime. The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. ✨✧ Benny CarterSwingin' The 20s (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1958. Used ... $12.99
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". ✨✧ Betty DavisThey Say I'm Different ... LP
Just Sunshine/Light In The Attic, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Killer work from Betty Davis – one of the most impressive female funk talents ever! If you ever needed a definition of funk, this record may well be it – snapping drums, sharp-edged guitars, and sex-filled basslines that slink and slide all over the bottom of the grooves – a perfect setting for Betty's incredible vocals – which themselves have a smokey, raspy quality that's completely unique! At times, Davis is almost speaking, but at others she's practically screaming – belting out the lyrics in a way that makes you feel like you're sharing some space with her at the end of the bar as she gets more and more wound up about issues and people who are on her mind. And as if the vocals weren't enough, the backings are incredible too – filled with drum breaks and basslines that few other albums can match – all wrapped around badass tunes that include "Shoo-B-Doop & Cop Him", "He Was A Big Freak", "70's Blues", "Git In There", "Special People", "Don't Call Her No Tramp", and "Your Mama Wants Ya Back". Edson XAfrican Vibes – The New Beats ... CD
Azul (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $4.99
Really great work from this up and coming Brazilian beatmaker – and a record that really lives up to the promise of its title! The style here is heavy on African influences – often mixing together live percussion and acoustic instrumentation with tighter rhythm programs and contemporary club styles – all somewhat in the mode of some of the Afro Funk revival work that's sprung out of Paris in the last decade or so. But Edson X does way more here than just copy the core grooves of Fela – and his African Vibes spread well across the continent in their search for inspiration – usually mixing in a fair bit more vocal passages than other records of this type. Titles include "African Fields", "The Master", "Freedom", "Celebration Day", "Lion", "Gods Dance", "Trabaia Nego (rmx)", and "Flight 808 (rmx)". CD

Big Crown, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
El Michels return again to the Wu-Tang chambers – and the results this time might even be better than before! Wu-Tang forged their initial sound out of a love of offbeat samples and unusual funk – so it's only fitting that one of the hippest funk groups around strip the music right down to its roots – performing new live interpretations with their wickedly sinister groove – all at a level that makes the whole thing a slow funk masterpiece from start to finish! El Michels has always been one of the few real standouts in the deep funk scene – and it's records like this that keep us loving them so much. And even though the set features vocals from Lee Fields on two tracks, and Lady Wray on one more – the instrumental groove is what dominates and draws our ears, on tracks that include "Tears", "Sipped Up", "Shadow Boxing", "Iron Man", "4th Chamber", "Shaolin Brew", "Drums For Sale", "Verbal Intercourse", "Tearz", and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthin Ta F Wit". Yolanda JohnsonViolet Flower ... CD
Meta Music, 2006. Used ... $2.99
A really wonderful set from Yolanda Johnson – the daughter of 70s mellow soul genius Samuel Jonathan Johnson, but a heck of a great artist in her own right! Yolanda's definitely inherited some of her father's talent for a laidback groove – and this album's a masterpiece in understated soul tracks, filled with great little numbers that never push things too far, nor overstate Yolanda's case – a great sense of restraint that's becoming rare these days, and which really helps set the record apart from other contemporary work! The tunes are warm and soulful, but not in a way that's ever slick – and a set like this is a great reminder that there's still plenty of real soul music to be made when an artist steps into the studio with the right attitude. The set features 8 tracks in all – somewhere between an EP and a full LP – and titles include "Keep It Moving", "Individual", "Get 2 Know U", "Doing Dirty", "Fly Shine", "Running", "Change", and "Violet Flower". A beautiful group, and one with a very unique sound – a style that draws from the early 50s experiments in Brazilian jazz by Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida – but which also moves the approach into even more sophisticated 70s territory! The quartet features Almeida on acoustic guitar and Bud Shank on some wonderful reeds – plus bass from Ray Brown and drums from Shelly Manne, but players who are open to all the new ideas of Bud and Laurindo, but who can also throw in a stronger groove when needed. The album's a wonderful experiment in really pushing the envelope of jazz expression further – but never in any sort of outside ways – and titles include a reading of Ravel's "Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte", plus "C'Est What", "Corcovado", "Autumn Leaves", "Samba De Orfeu", and "Reveil". Los Amigos InvisiblesVenezuelan Zinga Son Vol 1 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2004. Used ... $3.99
Venezuelan groove from Los Amigos Invisibles – produced by Masters At Work! Kenny Dope and Louie Vega may seem an unlikely match for a Latin, jam-inclined percussion ensemble, but the mix works masterfully! The Amigos don't leave the live instrumentation behind for a house makeover, but what they do come up with is a heady attention to a hynotic groove. In spots, the album kind of sounds like a less self consciously artsy variation on the kind of sounds Moreno Veloso lays down with his combo. On others, like the lightly funky and disco schooled "Una Disco Llena" and "Ease Your Mind" (one of a couple songs sung in English) the MAW trademark shines brightly. Nice stuff – and one of the most appealing, and least pretentious Luaka Bop albums we've heard in a while! Columbia, 1970. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A very unusual little soundtrack – almost more of an audio documentary of the film than a record itself! Although Johnny Mandel's score for the movie was plenty darn great, there's very little of it here – because about 80% of the record features jokes and dialogue from the film by Elliot Gould, Donald Sutherland, and others. However, the album does start off with Ahmad Jamal's excellent Fender Rhodes version of "Mash" – subtly funky, and a wonderful groover that we love to death! Other musical moments are buried amidst the spoken bits. LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest Northern Soul albums ever – completely great all the way through, and filled with songs that have been burning up dancefloors for years! The vocals are incredible – soaring harmonies that hold together perfectly, even when the grooves are hard and heavy – and the instrumentation is great too – handled by the Pied Piper team, who were kind of a Motown offshoot that featured Jack Ashford on vibes and percussion, Dave Hamilton and Ray Monette on guitar, and Joe Hunter on piano. Hunter and Ashford handled the arrangements – with a pitch-perfect sound that's completely sublime – sweet and grooving at the same time, and put together with the same kind of care you'd find at Motown – but with all the harder-edge qualities that always made indie work from Detroit so great. Every cut is a winner, and the set is the only full album ever done by the group – with cuts that include "Egyptian Love", "Till The End Of Time", "Since I Found My Baby", "Sweetest One", "Unlucky Sun", "I'll Never Forget You", "Do The Pied Piper", and "I'm With You All The Way". Great reissue – fully remastered from the original tapes – with new liner notes too! CD

RCA/Dusty Groove, 1973. New Copy ... $7.99 12.99
A masterpiece of hard and heavy funk – from one of the best bands of the early 70s! The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Drumology", "Excuse Me While I Do My Thing", "Serenade for a Jive Turkey", "Happy Hooker", "Craaashing", "Damn", "Pee-Foul", and a sweet cover of "Valdez in the Country" that's been sampled at least once over the years! Paisley Park/Warner, 1987. New Copy 13LP & DVD ... $286.99 299.98
A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is completely intact – his amazing ability to create funky grooves, slinky sensuality, and songs that are so catchy, they can win over audiences on both sides of the fence. But there's also some deeper elements here going on too – maybe more space for thoughtful presentation spread out over the 2LPs that comprised the original record – at a level that's only more confirmation of the never-ending genius of prince! Titles include the great title cut "Sign O The Times" – plus "Strange Relationship", "Slow Love", "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night", "Adore", "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker", "Housequake", "U Got The Look", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", "The Cross", "Hot Thing", and "Starfish & Coffee". 2020 version – remastered for the first time ever! Quartette Tres BienIn Motion ... LP
Decca, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A stunning little set from the Quartette Tres Bien – a sweet 60s group who were every bit as groovy as the Ramsey Lewis Trio, but never fully got their due! This set is one of the group's best – filled with some killer original titles – all delivered with their unusual "piano trio plus" approach – which adds in extra percussion from Percy James on bongos and congas, to the group that features Jeter Thomas is on the piano, Richard Simmons on bass, and Albert St. James on drums. The percussion is often used in nicely exotic ways, while the trio still grooves with a soul jazz vibe – and our favorite numbers include "Brother Percy", "Bad People", "Saint Sylvester", and "Master Charles" – but the whole thing is top notch – with some nice covers and and fresh takes on standards, like "It Ain't Necessarily So", "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars", "It Could Happen To You", and "Charade". Bunny SiglerI've Always Wanted To Sing – Not Just Write Songs (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Gold Mind/Octave (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $24.99
The title's a bit strange – given that Bunny Sigler started out as a soul singer in the late 60s, and continued to record well into the 70s too – yet it's also a reminder that by the time of this set, Sigler had become a real powerhouse on the Philly club scene – working as a producer and arranger for a host of other artists too! All that strong work comes to bear on this album – done by Bunny in close collaboration with Instant Funk, who provide lots of sharp-edged grooves that are heavy on guitar – and a nice change from the usual disco modes of the time. Tunes are clubby, but have lots of funk in the rhythms too – and titles include "Let's Get Freaky Now", "Simple Things You Do", "Cry My Eyes Out", "By The Way You Dance", "Glad To Be Your Lover", and "I'm Funkin You Tonight". CD features bonus tracks – "By The Way You Dance (orig Bobby DJ Guttadoro 12" mix)", "By The Way You Dance (unreleased Larry Levan mix)", "By The Way You Dance (Tom Moulton 12" mix)", "By The Way You Dance (single)", and "Glad To Be Your Lover (orig Bobby DJ Guttadoro 12" mix)". ✨✧ Sly & The Family StoneFresh ... CD
Epic, Early 70s. Used ... $3.99
Sly's leaping into the air on the cover of this one – and for good reason too, given the overall groove of the set! The album's a bit more stripped-down and upbeat than the previous few – almost more of a return to the simple funky style of the first albums, but with a slightly more electric sound than before – especially in the keyboards, which almost slide into the mix here with a Stevie Wonder-like quality. The electricity bubbles and brews wonderfully at the bottom of the rhythms – charging things up a bit, but still hanging back with a super-cool, laidback quality that few other groups could muster! There's a great sense of balance here that's brilliant – and which makes the album one of Sly's undisputed masterpieces from the Columbia years. Titles include the incredible "If You Want Me To Stay" – one of our favorite Sly Stone cuts ever – plus "Keep on Dancin", "Babies Making Babies", "Que Sera Sera", "If It Were Left Up To Me", "In Time", and "Let Me Have It All". Sonny Stitt makes Oscar Peterson sit up and groove! The tunes on the set are every bit as great as those on Sonny's own albums as a leader for Verve – crisp, clear, and perfectly blown – a masterpiece of subtle creativity and one of the greatest tones to ever emerge from the saxophone! The first-ever full length collection of work from Sun Palace – the enigmatic duo who cut some great underground club work on the early 80s New York scene! The set's broken into two halves – titled "Raw Movements" and "Rude Movements", after the famous instrumental singles – which are both featured here, along with lots of other incredible 80s material that really fleshes out the groove! Most tracks feature some kind of wickedly weird guitar line from Mike Collins, and lots of cool keyboards from Keith O'Connell – all in modes that are as spare as some of the earliest house music, but with rhythms that are much more in an NYC electro mode! There's a lot of unreleased tracks here from those days – including a few that were just finished up for this set – and titles include "Raw Movements", "Love Train II", "Palace Strut", "Coral Reef", "Street Beat", "What's The Time", "Rude Movements (remaster)", "Movement 1 (winning)", "Movement 2 (reconstruction)", and "Movement 3 (completion)". Impulse (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $22.99
One of Gabor Szabo's best records – a hip small combo session, featuring backup by Gary McFarland, Sadao Watanabe, Richard Davis, and Willie Rodriguez – an odd kind of lineup, but one that goes well with the offbeat grooves of the set! The overall sound has lots of touches of the McFarland Latinized rhythms of the time – but also stretches out with some of those great snakey guitar solos from Szabo – not nearly as extended or trippy here on other albums of the time, but in a really great way that makes for some tight, hip, mod little tracks! The set's one of Gabor's best from the 60s – and titles include "Flea Market", "Walk On By", "Gypsy Jam", "Gypsy '66", and "The Echo Of Love". The whole thing's kind of a compressed take on the sound of Gabor's Spellbinder album – if you know that one! CD

✨✧ Melvin Van PeeblesSweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Stax, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
One of the most fantastic soundtracks of the 70s – and maybe even of all time – thanks to a non-stop blast of insane styles and grooves – all quite different than other blacksploitation records of the time! For this, his masterpiece film, Melvin Van Peebles composed a non-stop collage of crazy sounds and funky jams, played by himself and a very young Earth, Wind, & Fire – then pasted together in a pastiche of music, dialogue, and sound effects that serve as an audio document of the film! If you've ever seen the movie – and even if you haven't – you'll find that the soundtrack works as a 40 minute version of the film, shifting back and forth with a loose narrative progression. Of course, the real appeal is the funky music – and you'll hear more than enough of that on tracks like "Sweetback's Theme", "Hoppin John", "Come On Fee", and "Sweetback Getting it Uptight". Maestro Richie Weeks is at the helm of this sweet set of early 80s groovers – funky club in the best second chapter mode of the Salsoul label – served up with a sound that's lean and mean throughout! We're not sure who the "Co" is, since Richie sings, plays keyboards, and handles most of the rhythms too – all at a level that's tight, but never uptight – and which gets graced at points by some jazzy instrumentation and female chorus vocals too! Tunes are mighty catchy – grooving, but in a hip post-disco way – and there's even a bit of vocoder on some of the lyrics. Titles include "Good To The Last Drop", "Tunnel Of Love", "Knock, Knock", "Rockin It In Your Pocket", and "Going Out Of My Head". The long-awaited return of the Whitefield Brothers – melding global funk and tripped out psychedelia as masterfully as on their massive In The Raw album – and tripping it out and funking it up even more this time! The psychedelic sounds get more pronounced play this time out, but it's still well within the funk realm – gritty drums and percussion under fuzzed out rhythms, keys that range from a jazzy funk groove to thick layers of fuzz and bubbling atmospherics, exotic string accents, heady bass grooves and more. Their reach is global, too, with influences from the east and the west – and a heck of an impressive guest roster – with leftfield MCs on a couple gems – Edan & Mr Lif on "The Gift" and Percee P & MED on "Reverse" – plus Bajka, Brooklyn funk revival masters the El Michels Affair, and fellow psych funk traveller Quantic. Nancy really steps out from some of her more staid modes here – swinging a groove with some bad-rapping late 60s styles, yet still also reminding us that she's a sophisticated lady on some of the record's more adult tracks too. Arrangements are by the trio of Jimmy Jones, Phil Wright, and Joe Parnello – each of whom bring a different feel to the record, and help create a strong sense of variety amongst tracks that include "Son Of A Preacher Man", "Make The World Go Away", "I Made You This Way", "Husbands & Wives", "Mr Walker It's Over", "Almost Persuaded", and "Got It Together". That's quite a cover for an album by a harmonica player – but then again, Nobuo Yagi is quite a harmonica player himself! The album's got a very fresh feel – a bit fusion, but also with some rootsier percussion currents too – mixed with warmer keyboards and guitar, all to set up these really cool grooves for Yagi's sweet solos on the harmonica! The approach is like the best Toots Thielemans fusion material of the 70s – and we mean that in the best way possible – because Yagi's one of his few contemporaries who can keep things as interesting and creative as Toots, and maybe even does a better job of stepping into the spotlight, thanks to some great 70s soul/fusion backings. Most titles are in Japanese, and the set is all instrumental. CD

Most of the tracks were cut in the first few years of the 70s – at a time when when central Ohio was producing soul and funk as mighty as the bigger midwestern cities of Detroit, Memphis and Chicago – standing just as tall even if it didn't get over as well in the marketplace! 19 tracks in all – 11 of which were issued as Prix 45s in the early 70s, plus 8 more tracks that were never officially released – culled from finished masters, demos and other studio material that was only recently discovered! ✨✧ Ray BarrettoAcid ... CD
Fania, Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monster! If you buy one Latin record this year – make it this one – because it's one of the greatest ever recorded! Ray's late 60s Acid album is a landmark recording – a sublime mixture of Latin jazz, percussion, and soul – grooving hard in a variety of styles, and always hitting the money on every single track. The title cut "Acid" is one of those tunes you'll be playing until you're locked up in a nursing home – and the rest of the record is equally great – with cuts like the bouncy groover "Soul Drummers", the tasty boogaloo "El Nuevo Barretto", and the extended "Espiritu Libre", a great Latin jazz track, with very "out" piano! Blue Note, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went onto forever change the face of jazz funk! After rumbling around for a few years attempting electric styles that really didn't fit his mode, Donald wisely hooked up with Larry, and hit a groove here that would carry him for many many years. The album's a masterpiece of soul – heavy production with great keyboards, creating a nice set of grooves that let Byrd solo over the top, sounding better than he had in years! Great all the way through, and with tracks that include "Flight Time", "Sky High", "Black Byrd", "Slop Jar Blues", "Mr Thomas", and the prophetically-titled "Where Are We Going?" CD

Atlanta/FTG, 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mid 80s funky soul from Cashflow – a rare one cut for the Atlanta label, and produced by Larry Blackmon – a group R&B effort that seamlessly combines the club ready soul, funk, 80s rap influences and otherwise tightly thumping grooves Blackmon worked with at the time! Cashflow had a hit with "Mine All Mine", but the rest of the record is nearly as nice as that one – post electro, keyboard heavy synth soul & funk production with group vocals that range from quite strong lead and backing vocals – plus a Larry Blackmon rap in the middle of "Party Freak", a cut that works nicely in the She's Strange era Cameo mold! Other tracks include "Can't Let Love Pass Us By", "Spending Money", "Reach Out", "I Need Your Love" and "It's Just A Dream". This remastered FTG edition includes bonus 12" extended versions of "Party Freak" and "Mine All Mine". CD

Numero, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2CD set features 46 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, some alternate takes, and even new mixes – plus an 80 page hardcover book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. ✨✧ George FreemanFranticdiagnosis (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Bam-Boo/Shout (Japan), 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary bit of funk – and a killer record from one of the most unique guitarists ever! George Freeman's got a sound and a style unlike any other player we can think of – an approach to funky guitar that's often got a really hard touch on the strings, and which gets nice and noisy at the best funky moments. Freeman's probably best known for the few obscure records he cut with Groove Holmes, but this album's his out and out masterpiece – a rare one-off session cut in the funky Philly scene and supervised by DJ Sonny Hopson – and featuring a rare mix of players that includes Cesar Frazier on organ and Charles Earland on Arp! The mix of organ and Arp is really incredible – especially on the side-long jammer "Franticdiagnosis", which runs for nearly 20 minutes, and is one of the most messed-up funky jazz jams of the 70s! Other players include Von Freeman on tenor sax and Dave Hubbard on alto flute – and the album features the legendary jazz dance track "The Bump", plus the cuts "Free-Man" and "God Bless The Child". Second installment in Joe Gibbs' African Dub series, featuring super-heavy spaced out dubs of Gibbs' solid gold rocker's rhythms. Somehow he manages to sound just this side of gimmicky when dropping in all those weird sound effects of dogs barking and sirens, but with those chubby riddims thundering along underneath it doesn't matter much what he does. Crazy fat smoked out grooves featuring: "Chapter Two", "The Marriguna Affair", "My Best Dub", "Angola Crisis", "Peeping Tom", "Outrage", "Idlers Rest", "Third World", "Heavy Duty Dub", "Musical Arena", "Mackarus Serenade" and "Jamaican Grass" are included in this set. ✨✧ HarmoniaComplete Works (Musik Von/Deluxe/Live 1974/Tracks & Traces/Documents 1975) 5CD set) ... CD
Brain/Gronland (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy 5CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning set – one that brings together two rare albums from this legendary group – plus essential rare material too! First up is Musik Von Harmonia – an electronic prog classic – served up by the trio of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius from Cluster, plus Michael Rother of Neu! The tracks here have a definite Cluster-like sound – instrumentals that use organ, keyboards, guitar, and electronic percussion to build up some wonderfully analogue-styled grooves – often quite slow at first, but filling up nicely as added elements come into the mix! The record's easily one of our favorites from the time, and has a much darker sound than later Moebius/Roedelius work. Titles include "Watussi", "Ohrwurm", "Ahoi", "Dino", "Sonneschein", "Sehr Kosmisch", "Veterano" and "Hausmusik". Next is Deluxe – a brilliant little album from Harmonia – quite possibly their greatest record ever, and a set that's wonderfully balanced between progressive and electronic modes! There's a live drummer on the set – Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru – and although he still plays with a spare, circular mode that recalls the Harmonia rhythms of before, there's also a slight bit of propulsion here too – one that pushes the keyboards and guitars alongside nicely. There's also some spacey vocals at times, which when coupled with these other elements, gives the record a sound that's a bit like early Neu – although still a bit more electronic overall. A great bridge between two worlds of music in the German scene of the 70s – with tracks that include "Gollum", "Monza", "Notre Dame", "Deluxe", "Walky Talky", and "Kekse". Next is Live 1974 – a hypnotic live set from Harmonia – and a pretty incredible sonic document of the hugely important group made of Krautrock lynchpins Michael Rother, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Mobius! The gig was one from March of 1974 in Griessem, Germany and it finds the trio kicking out the trance inducing ambience, lumbering 70s style electronic manipulation, and improvisational interplay without ever sacrificing a heady groove! The group was hardly content to simply play the tracks from their couple of LPs – taking a much more freeform, exploratory and beautifully languorous approach to their sound – a pretty raw, but no less beautiful swirl of electronic percussion, keys, synthesizer and ambient guitar. Titles include "Shaumberg", "Veteranissimo", "Arabesque", "Holta-Polta" and "Ueber Ottenstein". Tracks & Traces is textural mood pieces and quite beautiful material from Harmonia and Eno – beautiful mid 70s recordings and a few unreleased gems – wholly wonderful material that weirdly didn't see a release for about 30 years! Some of the tunes are sparely furnished, kind of pastoral bits of echoing atmospherics and trance inducing sound loops, others with more jarring bits of dissonant tension, and all of it holding up proudly with the better known work of the sound masters involved, together and separately! Includes "Welcome", "Atmosphere", "Camos Comapneros", "By The Riverside", "Weird Dream", "Almost", "When Shade Was Born". "Aubade" and more. Last up is Documents 1975 – four unreleased tracks all recorded during the pivotal year of 1975, when the group was really pushing its sound a bit, and helping find a new path forward for the energy of Krautrock! As with other Harmonia work, there's a sense of layering and modal progression that drives most of these numbers forward – but there's also a bit of compactness, too – which has some of the most important musical elements playing a stronger role more quickly – showing both the direction that group members Dieter Moebius and Hans Joachim Roedelius would take in later work, and the influence that Harmonia would have on other European acts through the post-punk years. Mani Neumeir of Guru Guru joins in on drums on two tracks – and along with Michael Rother, the varied instrumentation from Moebius and Roedelius includes lots of keyboards, electronics, guitar, Fender Rhodes, and even a nagoja harp! Titles include "Tki Taka At Harmonia Studio In Forst", "Proto Deluxe At Harmonia Studio In Forst", "Live At Fabrik In Hamburg", and "Live At Onkel Po In Hamburg". CD

✨✧ Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66Ye-Me-Le ... CD
A&M/Universal, 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Way past the hits, and into some really great territory – a move that makes the record one of our favorite Sergio Mendes sets for A&M! The sweeter bossa pop style here is undercut with a bit more influence from late 60s Brazilian grooves – some of the more baroque turns that Sergio's contemporaries back home were taking, mixed with a few of the trippier influences that were coming into the scene as well. The overall style is still in the warm two-voiced mode that made Brasil 66 famous, but we appreciate some of the headier moments moving into the mix – partly from the guitar of Oscar Castro Neves, as well as the orchestrations by a young Dave Grusin! Titles include the fantastic title cut "Ye-Me-Le" – a wonderful groover written by Luiz Carlos Vinhas – plus a number of excellent covers, like "Norwegian Wood", "What The World Needs Now", "Moanin", and "Where Are You Coming From?". KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The big beat here is plenty darn funky – but in some really weird and wonderful ways too – thanks to the genius talents of the mighty Alan Moorehouse, the legendary British maestro featured on this rare sound library album for KPM! Moorehouse is even more compelling than some of his funky contemporaries on the sound library scene – because he's not only got a great way of cooking up a short, simple, soulful groove – but he also puts the instruments together in really unusual ways, often to create sounds that veer past their simple origins, to make the grooves sound even greater! This album's a sound library masterpiece all the way through – the kind of set that makes you realize why this under-exposed genre of music is regarded so highly by modern beatheads – thanks to Moorehouse's use of organ, keyboards, funky drums, and a fair bit of acoustic guitar – quite unusual for a KPM set, but all the more compelling. Titles inlcude "Boss Man", "Soul Skimmer", "Pop Pastime", "That's Nice", "West Coastin", "Angelic Gas", "Expo In Tokyo", "Rock It Again", "Rockin Boogie", and "Pop Mandolin". LP, Vinyl record album

Analog Africa (Germany), 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible West African grooves from Benin's Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou – as hypnotic as any early 70s Afro sounds we can think of, and that's really saying something given the creative fertility of the period! The material here was recorded in Lagos, and was released the group's very rare first album in 1973 – a 4 song album that makes for one heck of an amazing 33+ minutes of unique Afrobeat! It was recorded in 2 separate sessions: "Ou C'est Lui Ou C'est Moi" and the incredible 12+ minute "La La La La" are versions from the original, uber-rare LP release on the Albarika Store label, while "Yeye We Nou Mi" and "Egni Miton? Nin Mi Na Wa Gbin" (both 6+ minutes long) are versions from a test pressing version that have not seen release before now. It's all newly remastered and sounds amazing! We couldn't be more thrilled with this post-millennium global re-discovery of Vincent Ahehehinnou & the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo – and we owe Analog Africa a great debt of gratitude for that! CD

One of Terry Riley's most enduring works, and a haunting record that contains two extended modal minimal jams – "Rainbow In Curved Air" and "Poppy Nogood & The Phantom Band". "Rainbow" features Terry interweaving cool keyboard lines on organ, electric harpsichord, and the amazingly cool "rocksichord" – which is almost a guitar-like keyboard! "Poppy Nogood" has a similar groove on organ and soprano saxophone. Both tracks are prime material by Riley, and they have a sound that's influenced countless artists in the current electronica generation – but which never sounded better than here, on the original recordings! One of those hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note! The album features an amazing array of top-line players – like Tina Brooks, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey, and Kenny Burrell – and they all play with Smith in differing combinations, all of which have an open-ended groove that sounds very nice, and very much like the kind of material that Smith would have laid down at some small club in the late 50s. This early CD reissue collects material from both the House Party & Sermon sessions, with a slightly different track list than the original album, or the RVG remaster – titles include "Just Friends", "Blues After All", "J.O.S.", "What Is This Thing Called Love", & "Cherokee". Stax, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The one-time obscure, now straight-up classic funky soul record by 24-Carat Black! This beautiful LP was released by Stax in the early 70s, but somehow got lost in the shuffle. Fortunately, it was rediscovered by the international groove community in the years to come, and it's been at the top of everyone's playlist (and want list) ever since! This is sort of a politically conscious mini-opera, or suite, with 8 tracks of spiritual funk and soul, all strung together in a righteous package that's as perfectly-conceived as you could imagine for an independent soul release from the 70s. You've probably heard at least one sample from this album – maybe from the cuts "Brown-Baggin", "Food Stamps", or the title cut "Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth", a great sample cut – but the whole album's great, and it totally deserves its massive reputation! Som Livre (Brazil), 1983. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Marcos Valle might look a bit sad and forlorn with all those fruity drinks on the cover – but the record itself is a wonderfully upbeat session, and one that's very much in the same modern soul mode of his 80s groove Vontade De Rever Voce! As on that record, the sound here shows strong traces of Marcos' early 80s collaborations with Leon Ware in California – and the overall groove is a nice mix of boogie, two step, and smoother soul – a genre that we never would have expected during Valle's bossa years, but which comes off tremendously well here! There's lots of warmly stepping bass amidst smooth jazzy horns – and the tracks all have a compressed groove that keeps things nice and crisp – plenty classy, in a way that's supremely appealing if you dig early 80s mellow soul. Titles include a remake of "Viola Enluarada", plus "Naturalmente", "Estrelar", "Samba De Verao", "Dia D", "Mals Que Amor" ,"Fogo Do Sol", "Tapa No Real", and "Tapetes Guardanapos Cetins". CD

Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career!
