✨✧ Vince GuaraldiIt's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Craft, 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The third soundtrack that Vince Guaraldi did for The Peanuts TV specials – and maybe the best so far! There's a depth to the music that's wonderful – as Vince's combo works alongside some occasional larger orchestrations by John Scott Trotter, which are still arranged by Guaraldi – and the core combo adds in the guitar of John Gray, trumpet of Emanuel Klein, and sax and flute of Ronald Lang – the last of which is a particularly expressive sound on the record! The whole thing's worth it alone for "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" – which captures that perfect mix of melancholy and groove that was Guaraldi at his best – and the set also features maybe the best version ever of "Linus & Lucy", thanks to some flute – plus "Trick Or Treat", "Breathless", "Graveyard Theme", "Snoopy & The Leaf/Freida", and "The Charlie Brown Theme". CD features a whopping 24 tracks in all, with some great alternates and other material – much more than the previous CD! CD

✨✧ John Lee HookerGreat John Lee Hooker (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Crown/P-Vine (Japan), Late 1940s/Early 1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
About as classic as you can get for the legendary John Lee Hooker – a set of recordings from his early postwar years that perfectly define the special touch and electric genius of his music! The sound here is often as spare as rural acoustic blues from years back – but Hooker's using an electric instrument with a nice current of fuzz, which almost acts like a louder, fuller chorus behind his vocals – often hinting at feedback possibilities, which creates this hypnotic quality to the music – whether or not John's grooving high, or stepping low! And the vocals are something equally wonderful, too – sung and hum at the same time, in that classic Hooker way – again a huge influence on so many others to come. Japanese CD features 24 tracks in all! CD

✨✧ Carmen McRaeGreat American Songbook (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1971. Used 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
The title sounds a bit ambitious, but the album's actually a great intimate date from Carmen McRae – a beautifully-recorded small combo performance – caught live at Donte's in LA, with a sound that hearkens back to some of Carmen's best work of the 50s! The format is spare and simple – backing by a quartet that features Joe Pass on guitar, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Chuck Domanico on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums – all grooving with a light and lively touch behind Carmen's wonderful vocals – served up here with a lot more freedom than she was getting on most of her studio dates from the time. The "great American songbook" is really just a catch-all for a very wide variety of work included on the record – and the album's hardly the staid "songbook" sort of album you'd guess from the title. Instead, Carmen really opens herself up to a lot of great tunes, from classic to contemporary – with titles that include "Three Little Words", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "The Ballad Of Thelonious Monk", "Behind The Face", "Sunday", "Day By Day", "If The Moon Turns Green", "At Long Last Love", and "A Song For You". CD features a few bonus tracks too! CD

✨✧ Allen GinsbergLion For Real – Reborn (clear vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Great Jones/Shimmy Disc, 1989. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful later project from the legendary poet Allen Ginsberg – a set put together by Hal Willner, and one that may well be better than any of his previous efforts to blend together words and music! The tunes often still have that hypnotic quality of Ginsberg's earlier recordings, but maybe with less of a hippie sense of self-consciousness – more understated, and handled by a very hip lineup of downtown New York players who include Steve Swallow on bass, Gary Window on tenor, Beaver Harris on drums, and Marc Ribot, Arto Lindsay, and Bill Frisell on guitars! Titles include "Scribble", "Complaint Of The Skeleton To Time", "The Shrouded Stranger", "Cleveland The Flats", "The End", "Sunset", and "The Lion For Real". This expanded 2LP version has been completely remixed and remastered – and includes eight songs not on the original album! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MonsoonThird Eye (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Great Expectations/Cherry Pop (UK), 1983. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking fusion of Indian styles and 80s pop modes – served up here with the young Sheila Chandra on vocals, and a wonderful blend of sitars, tablas, percussion, and catchy UK electro modes! The album's a great calling card for the post-colonial generation – and maybe has more to recommend it to the mainstream radio play crowd than just the world music underground – as Chandra and crew really knock things out of the park for a new generation – unafraid of their roots, but also in love with some of the fresher UK modes of the time! Titles include "Wings Of The Dawn", "Kashmir", "Ever So Lonely", "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Eyes", "Shakti", "And I You", and "Watchers Of The Night". Great 2CD version – with a full bonus CD that includes 14 mixes from various singles, including some 1990 Ben Chapman remixes – plus other bonus tracks that includes the unreleased "With Your Love", the cuts "Sunset Over The Ganges", "Mirror Of Your Mind", "Shout Til You're Heard", and "Ever So Lonely (EP version)" – and four never-released Capitol Radio tracks from 1982! Junko OhashiPagoda ... LP
Great Tracks (Japan), 1990. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $36.99 59.99
Great mature work from Junko Ohashi – a set that's done well into her long run as one of the best Japanese singers of her generation – working here in modes that really show just how much she's grown as an artist! Most of the tracks are written by Ken Sato and Machiko Ryu – who give Ohashi some really wonderful material to work with, in grooves that often echo some of the changes that were coming into the Japanese scene at the time – especially some influences from UK soul that are maybe a few years before the generation of Monday Michiru and other younger singers. There's some interesting use of English language on the choruses for some tunes – and titles include "Tokyo Calling", "Snow Fall", "The Power of The City", "April Morning", and "You Can Love Someone". Junko OhashiQuestion ... LP
Great Tracks (Japan), 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $36.99 59.99
It's definitely 1988 on this album from Junko Ohashi – as the singer's making use of a lot of the best currents that had been showing up in American soul of the time – especially the early years of the new jack generation who mixed in heavier beats with R&B-styled production! Junko's got a voice that's more than up to the challenge of these bolder arrangements – which really gives the record a vibe that stands out from the pack, especially next to some of the lighter pop of the Japanese scene in the 80s. Some of the best cuts almost show a Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis inspiration – and titles include "Reaction", "Panorama", and "Sleepless Heart" – plus other titles in Japanese. LP, Vinyl record album

Yoichi TakizawaLeonids No Kanata Ni (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Alfa/Great Tracks (Japan), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 49.99
An album with a dreamy cover image, but one that comes across with a nicely down to earth vibe – really well-crafted arrangements from Hiroshi Satoh, who does a great job of shaping the music for the vocals of Yoichi Takizawa! There's a number of fusion players in the lineup – including the great saxophonists Jake Conception and Takeru Muraoka – and Satoh himself plays keyboards throughout, and really gives the record this warmly jazzy vibe – tight, but never too commercial – which really fits the warmth of Yoichi's vocals and original lyrics. Titles include "New Caledonia", "Last Story", "Marina Highway", "Saishu Bus", "Memorandum", "Leonids No Katana Ni", and "High Up To The Sky". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCity Pop Groovy 90s – Girls & Boys (pink & blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Great Tracks (Japan), 1990s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $54.99 64.99
A deep dive into the Japanese scene of the 90s – featuring music at a point when things were really moving past some of the more familiar city pop styles of the decade before! The cuts here have all sorts of great elements coming in – a bit of an influence from R&B sounds from both the US and UK, but and also some of the cooler, clubbier elements that would soon open up a whole generation of more underground J-Groove artists to come! All the work within is from the Sony family of labels, and given the time the tracks were released, many didn't ever get pressed up on vinyl – something that makes this 2LP set an even greater treasure. Features work from Sing Like Talking, Cindy, Toko Furuuchi, Caoli Cano, Moomin, The Chang, Gospellers, Magokoro Bros, Mutsumi Inoue, Eiko Hiraiwa, and others. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Happy EndHappy End (1970) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Avex/Great Tracks (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully folksy rock from this obscure Japanese group – an early 70s combo that included Harumi Hosono, years before his more electronic work! The sound of the album borrows a lot from the best of America's late 60s underground folk rock scene – and the production's an amazing blend of compressed guitars, slightly funky bass, and a nice spacious sense of arrangement that creates a surprising amount of soul. Vocals are mostly in Japanese, but sung in a mode that's so compelling, it hardly matters what they're saying – and the tunes themselves are catchy as heck! LP, Vinyl record album

Pony Canyon/Great Tracks (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A seminal bit of Japanese rock from the early 70s – performed by a group that included Haruomi Hosono, and who has a style that borrows from the best of the LA scene of the late 60s! The tunes are extremely catchy – done in a folksy style that has compressed guitars and spacious production that evoke bits of The Byrds, Graham Parsons, Beau Brummels, late Association, and some of our other favorite work from those magical years. Lyrics are all in Japanese, but sung in a simple and compelling style that somehow makes you forget that fact! LP, Vinyl record album

Great Tracks (Japan), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A late 70s charmer from Taeko Onuki – and a set that mixes in some warmly jazzy elements that really make her vocals shine! The album's partly arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto, but we almost prefer the other arrangements, handled by Seo Ichizo – which bring up those jazzy currents, and really help set the record apart from more mainstream Japanese work of the period – using bits of fusion to give Taeko some of the sparkle you might hear on a record by Kimiko Kasai! Lyrics are in Japanese, and titles include "Tasogare", "Jajauma Musume", "Totsuzen No Okurimono", "Umi To Shounen", and "Akogare". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ryuichi SakamotoNeo Geo ... LP
Epic/Great Tracks (Japan), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Ryuchi Sakamoto opens up a new world here with his music – on a set that was not only a big international hit, but which also features a fair bit of overseas artists as well! There's some really surprising appearances here – including Bootsy Collins and Bill Laswell on basses, Sly Dunbar and Tony Williams on drums, and even Iggy Pop on vocals on one track too! The tunes are a mix of more upbeat, catchy numbers with some of the mellower, more ambient currents in Sakamoto's palette – and the set really opened the door to interest in music from the Japanese scene for global listeners who'd somehow been missing all the earlier great work in the 80s. Titles include "Risky", which has Iggy on vocals – plus "Parata", "Okinawa Song", "After All", "Free Trading", "Neo Geo", and "Before Long". LP, Vinyl record album

Great Tracks (Japan), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A set that's got a vibe that's very much like the 80s-styled image on the cover – sweet Japanese fusion from the time, served up with plenty of keyboard work from Katsumi Horii – next to guitar from Hirokuni Korekata, who seems to get just as much space in the mix as the keyboards! There's other jazz players on the set too – including the great saxophonist Hidefumi Toki – yet the record also uses very contemporary rhythms borrowed from R&B, with drum patterns that bump things up from the bottom, while the electric instrumentation soars over the top! Titles include "Hot Is Cool", "Can't Go Back Tonight", "And My Party Began", "Non-Stop Paradise", "Alone At Last", and "Holy Sunset". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hiroshi SatoAwakening (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Alpha/Great Tracks (Japan), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mighty nice album from Japanese keyboardist Hiroshi Sato – and a set that's full of surprises throughout! The record begins in territory that's almost like some of the ambient Japanese work to come, but then moves into more fusion-based modes that warm things up very nicely – especially when Hiroshi provides a bit of vocals of his own! And the record also has vocals from Wendy Matthews on a number of tracks too – a soulful singer who really opens up the tunes she's on with some lyrics that make the record come across with plenty of AOR charms. Other cuts occasionally step into more 80s-based modes, especially when Sato uses some Linn drums for the rhythms – and titles include "Blue & Moody Music", "I Can't Wait", "Love & Peace", "Only A Love Affair", "Awakening", "It Isn't Easy", and "You're My Baby". ✨✧ Akiko YanoSuper Folk Song (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Great Tracks (Japan), 1992. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most personal albums we've ever heard from Akiko Yano – a really lovely set that has her working mostly with just piano alongside her vocals – which creates a sense of intimacy that really sets the record apart from some of Yano's other projects! If you've ever thought that Yano was all charm and quirk on some of her records, you'll be really surprised at the approach here – as she's very open and honest, delivering these tunes with a quality that's really stunning – especially given the large hall that was used to record both the piano and the vocals. Titles include a great English language reading of The Rascals' classic "How Can I Be Sure" – and all other tunes are in Japanese, with titles that include "Super Folk Song", "Someday", and "More & More Amor". ✨✧ Izumi YukimuraSuper Generation ... LP
Columbia/Great Tracks (Japan), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A 70s classic from Izumi Yukimura – a key Japanese cultural figure who was known as much for her work on the screen as for her recordings as a singer! Here, Izumi sings the music of Ryoichi Hattori, but with some help from younger talents who really open up the groove – including Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Masataka Matsutoya! The vibe is quite unique – almost a merging of generations, but with a slight cinematic mode as well – which makes for a very inventive style on titles that include "Hey Hey Boogie", "Ginza Kankan Musume", "Ippai No Coffee Kara", "Tokyo No Yane No Shita", and "Bara No Lumba". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyThings Are Getting Better (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used ... $4.99
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Other cuts include "Just One Of Those Things", "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental". CD includes two alternate takes. CD

Really wonderful work from a perfectly-matched trio – an all-star lineup, even though pianist Geri Allen was just at the start of her career – and a group who'd already given the world a few different studio albums on other labels! The set follows up with more material from the group's sessions for DIW at the Village Vanguard – and trust us, the material here is every bit as great as the work that was first issued decades back – a perfect balance between the lyrical flights of Geri Allen on the piano, the warmly round basslines of Charlie Haden, and the measured drum work of Paul Motian – a set that's free of ego, and which really has all three players working in wonderfully sympathetic company. Titles include "Fiasco", "In Walked Bud", "Obtuse Angles", "Two Women From Padua", "Mambo Jumbo", "Song For The Whales", "Dance Of Infidels", "Dancing In The Dark", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was". 17 North Parade (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 40.98
A classic compilation – and we can't get enough of Horace Andy's sweet falsetto keening over these chugging, fat rhythms! A tremendous set of sides Andy cut in the mid-70s, packaged together with a few of the cuts in dub versions – all from a period when Horace was really hitting new heights in his music. While Andy cut many seminal sides for Coxsonne Dodd's Studio One – this work, some of it in collaboration with the great Bunny Striker Lee, stands among his best – and also often features Horace with firm creative control. Titles include "Serious Thing (a serious version)", "Skylarking (a better version)", "Reggae Rhythm (it's gone internationally)", "Youths Of Today (Jah Youths)", "Don't Let Problems Get You Down (No Problem)", "Mr Bassie (discomix)", "Pure Ranking (discomix)", "Good Vibes (dub vibes)", "Ital Vital (Ital Ites dubwise)", and "Control Yourself (version under control)". Pick Up/Jazz Proverbs (Japan), 1980. Used ... $24.99
Brazilian fusion from Denmark – a really wonderful set from this cool Scandinavian combo! The record feels a fair bit like some of the Brazilian jazz coming out of the west coast of the US during the 70s – soaring, soulful, and put together with a breezy brilliance that almost takes off into hipper new directions than work coming out from Brazil at the time. And like most of that other work, this album's a hip mix of acoustic and electric jazz elements – great keyboards folded in alongside tenor sax, bass, and percussion – and topped with vocals on a few cuts too! There's a nicely free sense to the rhythms – but one that's never too open-ended – and for comparison's sake, the material also feels a bit like some of the best grooves on the early volumes of the Glucklich series on Compost. Titles include "Black Wing", "The Girl With Three Faces", "Would You", "When I Close My Eyes", "7:47 To Rio",a nd "From Dusk Towards Dawn". As a huge bonus, the CD also features 7 more tracks – the girl's previously unreleased album Children Of The Sun – with titles that include "Loneliness", "Jacuma Blue", "Nonsense", "Treasures", and "When You Walked Out On Me". ✨✧ Steve ArringtonDancin In The Key Of Life (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Iconoclassic, 1985. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A third great chapter in the career of the mighty Steve Arrington – a solo debut, after work in the groups Slave and Hall Of Fame – and a set that has Arrington maybe shining even more than ever in the spotlight! Rhythms are a bit more mid 80s than his previous work – but Steve's way of handling beats, basslines, and keyboards is every bit as funky as before – and his enthusiasm on the vocals brings a sort of warmth to the record that really knock away so much of the thinner soul on the charts! Arrington keeps things nice and lean – in a good way, which lets you know he's in charge – and titles include the anthemic title track "Dancin In The Key Of Life" – plus "Gasoline", "Stand With Me", "Turn Up The Love", "Brown Baby Boy", "Feel So Real", and "She Just Don't Know". Atlantic/Rhino, 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great solo classic from Steve Arrington – who continued to make excellent music long after leaving Slave, thanks to records like this! The Hall Of Fame sound is almost a refinement of the earlier Slave groove – a bit more focused and stripped down for the 80s, with a definite emphasis on the basslines – and an approach to funk that's equally well-suited to pick up some ears from early hip hop listeners too! The whole thing comes off perfectly – tight, but never too commercial – and lean, but never with a fake "street" sort of sound to get in the way. Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Message To Our Folks ... CD
BYG/Actuel (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 23.99
One of the key records that helped establish the genius of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago at the end of the 60s – a session that was recorded on the Paris scene, where the early quartet were really starting to rub shoulders with, and influence a range of different European players – maybe no surprise, when you hear the brilliance of an album like this! There's a bit more bite here than on some of the more spacious AEC performances overseas – really bold energy that comes across on the first few minutes of the record, which have this wonderfully righteous quality – augmented by shouts and calls – on tunes that maybe also have a bit more structure than some other material from the period too. The session was recorded at the Saravah studios, and seems to echo some of the criss-crossing experiments of that famous spot – heard on the Ensemble's classic album with Brigitte Fontaine – and the set features a magnificent mish-mash of sounds from Lester Bowie on trumpet, Malachi Favors on bass, both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on a variety of saxes and reeds, and the whole group on percussion! The set features the tracks "Old Time Religion", "Dexterity", "Rock Out", and the side-long "A Brain For The Seine" – which covers the whole second half of the record, and really sets the tone for the group's experiments to come. Dorothy AshbyAfro-Harping (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cadet/Verve, 1968. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the grooviest records ever – a sublime blend of African percussion, soulful orchestrations, and Dorothy Ashby's amazing electric harp! By the time of this landmark album, Dorothy had been knocking around the jazz world for a number of years, but it wasn't until she hooked up with Richard Evans at Cadet Records that her sound really began to cook – breaking down genres and expectations in the trademark style of the best late 60s sides from the Chicago underground. The record's got a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and a heck of a lot of soul – and the setting works perfectly for Dorothy's harp, giving it a lot more room to work around than some of her smaller jazz combo albums. The album includes two great originals – "Soul Vibrations" and "Afro-Harping" – both of which have a nice funky edge, and a groovy soulful bounce – and other tunes include "Lonely Girl", "Life Has Its Trials", "Look Of Love", "Come Live With Me", and a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". Atlantic StarrAlways – The Warner/Reprise Recordings 1987 to 1991 (All In The Name Of Love/We're Movin Up/Love Crazy/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $17.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". AuraSativa (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Cicadelic, 1976. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
Don't let the pot reference on the cover put you off, or give you the wrong sort of idea about the record – as the whole thing's tight, sharp, and pretty darn groovy – a wicked batch of blue-eyed soul from the Bay Area scene of the mid 70s, served up at a level that's not too far from some of the best work on Fantasy Records at the time! These guys are clearly a rock band, but have drunk up a heady brew of funk and soul – augmented in both the rhythm elements and the nice use of horns, as well as some of the great lead vocals from singer Paulette Collins! The record's a lost one, but definitely continues that great late 60s Bay Area mode of mixing soul and rock together in a very joyous way – on titles that include the funky sample cut "Mess Up Your Mind", plus "You Got Something", "Clap Your Hands", "First Taste Of Love", "Gonna Make It", "Sativa", "Don't You Worry", "Trying To Hold It Down", and "Skyrocket". This CD includes 3 bonus tracks: "Catch A Falling Star", "Evil That Brings You Down" and "It's A Feeling". CD

✨✧ Roy AyersFive Classic Albums – Tear To A Smile/Mystic Voyage/Everybody Loves The Sunshine/Vibrations/Lifeline (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Robinsongs (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
Five incredible albums from the legendary Roy Ayers – all presented in a single set! First up is Tear To A Smile – one of the best early soul albums by Roy Ayers! Roy's working here with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, William Allen, Harry Whitaker, and other hip players – a perfect crew to forge Roy's unique blend of jazz and soul. This is perhaps the first record to really have Roy stretching out in this mode – moving more fully away from funky jazz, into a ream of vocal tracks that would make him one of the most unique artists of the 70s. This mid 70s period of Roy's career was remarkably fertile, creatively as well as for sheer productivity – and Tears To A Smile is one of them that shows some the most artistic growth, and also a deeper sense of soul! Features righteous cuts like "2000 Black", "Ebony Blaze", "Time & Space", and "A Tear To A Smile" – plus the mellow "Magic Lady", and a great remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World". Next is Mystic Voyage – an archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first uptempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". Everybody Loves The Sunshine is one of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Vibrations is fantastic – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". Last up is Lifeline – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". Also features bonus tracks – "Evolution (7" mix)", "Domelo (7" mix)", and "Running Away (12" long version)". CD

Babe RuthDarker Than Blue – The Harvest Years 1972 to 1975 (First Base/Amar Caballero/Babe Ruth/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 39.99
A trio of great albums from Babe Ruth – plus bonus tracks too! First up is First Base – the debut of a group so great and so groovy, they ended up having a huge influence on the early sound of hip hop – thanks to a wonderfully funky sound at the core of their progressive rock groove! Babe Ruth have this rhythmic impulse that's really amazing – a way of working bass, drums, and percussion together with qualities that go way past just prog rock noodling – and have this focus that really fits the lead vocals and guitar of Alan Shacklock, who also handled all the arrangements for this mighty debut too! Titles include their classic cut "The Mexican" – a famous sample cut from way back, with nice use of acoustic guitar and a Morricone riff too – plus versions of Zappa's "King Kong" and Jesse Winchester's "Black Dog" – and the originals "Wells Fargo", "The Runaways", and "Joker". Next is Amar Caballero, an album with a horse on the cover, and a sound that's maybe even more soulful than the first mighty outing by Babe Ruth – quite a lot, given the strength of that debut! Female singer Jenny Haan seems to have an even greater presence here – working some nice currents of color through the group's great ability to riff, groove, and sometimes step into more acoustic modes – all while holding onto one of the hippest currents going in the Harvest Records scene – and one of the most unique as well! There's plenty of surprises throughout – and in addition to great cuts like "Broken Cloud", "Gimme Some Leg", "We Are Holding On", "Amar Caballo", and "Doctor Love" – the group also turn in a nicely offbeat remake of "Cool Jerk" too! Last up is the self-titled Babe Ruth, a set that really stands as a testament to their many musical influences! There's few groups who could ever hope to wrap together influences from Stax Records, Ennio Morricone, and Curtis Mayfield – and whole the whole thing could ever turn out well – but the mighty Babe Ruth do exactly that, and still find time for some of their own unique grooves as well! The group are every bit as groovy here as on their previous records – mixing fuzzy guitars, well-crafted rhythms, and a nicely compressed version of prog into an amazingly fresh sound that still delights all these many years later – thanks to well-crafted vocals from Jenny Haan, and sharp arrangements from Alan Shacklock, whose guitars and sense of wit really keeps the whole thing moving nicely. Shacklock penned most of the original tunes here – like "Dancer", "Somebody's Nobody", "Jack O'Lantern", and "The Dutchess Of Orleans" – and the group also turn in nice remakes of "Fistful Of Dollars", "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue", and "Private Number". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Wells Fargo (single)", "Theme From A Few Dollars More", "Ain't That Livin", "If Heaven's On Beauty's Side", and "Private Number (single)" – plus a big booklet of notes. Jazztime/Tokuma (Japan), 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Rare material from Dave Bailey – a set that's filled with fire, soul, and imagination – recorded as part of the drummer's amazing (and amazingly short) early 60s run as a leader! The date smokes with the same sort of energy as Dave's great "Gutter" albums for Epic – a groove that's part Blue Note, part Prestige, and carried off with so much precision, we wonder why Bailey never recorded more as a leader. Players are all wonderful – Kenny Dorham's on trumpet, Curtis Fuller's on trombone, Frank Haynes is on tenor, and Tommy Flanagan's on piano. Ben Tucker provides excellent basswork, and proves that him and Bailey were one of the best hardbop rhythm teams ever! Cuts include "Grand Street", "Osmosis", "Soul Support", and "An Oscar For Oscar". Classic! Following the fairly radical change in style from the sample-crafted Paul's Boutique to the rawer hip hop and live band vibe of Check Your Head, Ill Communication feels more like a step forward than a reinvention – and it's a great one! The manic trio vocals are at peak precision without losing the playfulness, especially on tracks that lean on gritty NY hip hop beats. The live band-rooted tracks – ranging from jazz and funk to fuzzy punk – is more diverse and all the better thanks to heartier contributions from Money Mark on keyboards. Classic singles and deep cut favorites all the way – including "Sure Shot", "Sabotage", "Futterman's Rule", "Shambala", "The Scoop", "Do It", "Heart Attack Man", "Bodhisattva Wow", the killer Jimmy Smith tribute "Root Down", "Get It Together" featuring a very sharp Q-Tip guest spot, and lots more. Brook BentonHome Style/Story Teller (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1970/1971. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A pair of later gems from Brook Benton – back to back on a single CD – and with a bonus track too! First up is Home Style – wonderful work from Brook Benton – and the kind of record that always gets overlooked in discussions of southern soul, but which is proof that Benton's always been a key force in the genre! Brook virtually invented the style with his earlier country soul recordings – and by the time of this 1970 set, he's in perfect form vocally – and working under some wonderfully sophisticated arrangements by Arif Mardin. The result is the kind of cross-genre record that Brook could do effortlessly – and which should have made him huge, but instead kind of got him left behind by all the other folks who were copping his style. Yet with the strength of a record like this, we'll take that overlooked fame as still OK – because the set's a gem just waiting to be discovered by later generations like us! Rhythm's by the Dixie Flyers – augmented by jazz players that include King Curtis, Pepper Adams, and Joe Newman. Titles include "Aspen Colorado", "For Lee Ann", "Whoever Finds This, I Love You", "Don't It Make You Wanta Go Home", and "Let Me Fix It". Next Is Story Teller – Ccol Cotillion work from Brook Benton – southern soul mixed with smoother, sophisticated moments – and a perfect realization of the sound that Benton was going for in the 60s! There's a bit less country here than before – although Brook also still has one foot in his roots, too – and the overall approach has mellower soul touches that are great – keyboards, guitar, and electric bass that roll along gently next to Benton's wonderful vocals. The album was recorded at Criteria Studios, and up north in New York – and titles include "Movin Day", "Sidewalks Of Chicago", "She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye", "Poor Make Believer", and "Shoes". CD also features the bonus track "A Black Child Can't Smile". CD

Purple Pyramid, Late 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $10.99 16.99
A great package – one that features some wildly experimental work from French electronics whiz Philippe Besombes! First up is the album Libra – tripped out electronics meet progressive rock jamming – all in a weird and wonderful film score from the early 70s! The record's one of the best by French experimentalist Philippe Besombes from the time – and it's got a style that sort of starts in the territory of Francois De Roubaix similar electronic work for film – but gets a lot darker and noisier right away! There's a textural depth here that's really great – almost a pre-industrial music exploration of sounds – but the work's also not that over-indulgent, either – and Besombes always has a great way of getting back to a tune, especially on the shorter tracks. Titles include "La Plage", "Rugby", "Ceremonie", "Hache 06", "La Ville", "Les Cosmonautes", "Tis A Song", "Boogimmick", and "PJF 261". Next is the record Esombeso – also release as Ceci Est Cela – a strange mix of sound library electronics and much more experimental work from Philippe Besombes – a set that carries echoes of some of the best Italian soundtrack electronics of the 70s, but which also features much darker, more turgid moments as well! The album collects some of Besombes' performances for ballet and other settings – and stands as an even starker document of his talents than some of the other albums issued under his name in the 70s. Titles include "Pawa"," Geant", "Seul", and "Ceci Est Cela". Next are two more albums done under the name Hydravion – both of which show Besombes turning his electronics into tighter, more song-based territory – although not without some noise from time to time – shorter tracks that sometimes get a bit tuneful, but which are still light years from mainstream music of the period. CD set also features bonus tracks for the first two albums – 8 more numbers that include "L'Or Des Fous", "Traversee", "Trio", "Piano Prepare", "Orgue Hache", and "Chocolate Cream". CD

Jymie Merritt's on bass next to Blakey's drums – and the tracks are long, and have that live performance bite that makes Messengers concert recordings from this time so great. A great Art Blakey lineup here, as usual – filled with fire from younger musicians who are really finding their voice in the Jazz Messengers – a group that includes Terence Blanchard on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, Jean Toussaint on tenor, and Mulgrew Miller on piano! Miller's work is a great match for Blakey's vibe – a bit like that time when Cedar Walton brought both lyricism and swing to the Messengers – and we love Toussaint at this point in his career, as he plays with this raspy tone that always gets us, and holds onto us long after his solos are done! Blanchard and Harrison are as great as you'd expect – and titles include "Blue Night", "Two Of A Kind", "Blue Minor", and "Mr Combinated". CD features three bonus alternate takes, too. CD

A nicely expanded version of the great second album from this very cool UK group – an early 80s act named after a famous song by Dave Brubeck – and one who definitely bring all sorts of jazz elements into their music! Blue Rondo A La Turk were pre-Sade, pre-acid jazz, and have a quality that resonates with some of the more jazz-based expressions of contemporaries like Working Week or Kalima – not straight jazz, but a definite jazz-influenced way of putting over British pop, and with a warmth that's very different than some of the more electronic sounds of the time! The group often dip into some Latin elements in their rhythms, but also have all the charms of bigger British pop groups of the time – a wonderful blend that comes through loud and clear on titles that include "Slipping Into Daylight", "Masked Moods", "Samba No Pe", "Hot Corner", "Smoking Dynamite", and "Are You Satisfied". 2CD edition features 19 more bonus tracks – including the previously-unissued cuts "Let's Get Real", "Kool Aid", "Devil Doll", "Love Let Me Lose You", "Hot Corner (early version)", "Mystery & Imagination", "Let It Go", and "Samba No Pe (early version)" – plus the tracks "Dirty Games", "The Method", and "Heavens Revisited" – and some 12" single mixes too! A beautiful session from Italian trumpeter Fabrizo Bosso and saxophonist Javier Girotto – one that's filled with all the Latin Moods promised in the title! The set steps nicely off some of Bosso's other recent work for Blue Note – with a sound that's evocative, but also pretty lively too – especially given the small combo setting for the date! Bosso's trumpet and flugelhorn come into great play with Girotto's soprano and baritone sax lines – dancing beautifully over some rhythmic backings shaded in with keyboards, piano, and electric bass. The large booklet features some poetic prose that really set the scene for each tune – and although there's a bit of vocals on the record, most numbers are instrumental. A really charming little set from vocalist Bobbi Boyle – a singer in Encino during the late 60s, working here with a great mix of jazz, bossa, and all things groovy! The album's almost a Sunshine Pop take on jazz vocals – one that has Bobbi singing with a sweet small combo, and vocalizing in these lightly skipping lines that are really beautiful – a bit like Lynn Marino on her famous album with Frank Cunimundo – a set that would be a very good comparison to this album too! But at another level, there's echoes here of some of the hipper European vocalists of the 60s – like Monica Zetterlund or Karin Krog – although Boyle's sound is definitely one that was born and bred in the good ol' US of A. Many of the tunes are familiar 60s numbers, but they're handled by Bobbi and the group with a really personal feel – one that brings gently grooving rhythms into play through most of the set, making for a really fresh approach to the music. Titles include "How Insensitive", "This Gal's In Love With You", "A Day In The Life", "It's Always 4 AM", "Love So Fine", "Lazy Day", "If You Go Away", and "Up Up & Away". The long-overdue second album from the Brand New Heavies – and one that came at just the right time to support the strong underground reputation the group were getting from a great range of singles issued during the early 90s! The sound hasn't changed much since their debut – at least the version of that record that featured N'Dea Davenport on vocals – save for the fact that Davenport's better than ever here, and has this way of soaring out that links together mainstream R&B and underground funk – at a level that nobody else was doing at the time! Quartin/Far Out (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A fantastic double-length set – two full albums of music, essential for any fan of Brazilian jazz – or even jazz in general! First up is Esperanto – an incredible album from one of Brazil's greatest reed players of the 70s – the mighty Victor Assis Brasil – a free-thinking spirit who really took Brazilian jazz in bold new directions at the time! The record shows Victor absorbing a lot of post-Coltrane influences, and blending them with a tight approach to rhythm – laid down here by Dom Salvador on piano (and organ), Edison Lobo on bass, and Edson Machando on drums. The group is completed by Helio Delmiro on guitar, and Claudio Roditi plays trumpet on one track – but the real highlight is the amazing reed work by Brasil, which is filled with soul and warmth, plus a deep sense of exploration. The whole session was put together by Roberto Quartin in 1970 – and it's still extremely fresh today. Titles include "Children", "Gingerbread Boy", "Senegal", and "Marilia". Next is Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim – a fantastic album from this legendary Brazilian saxophonist – and one that's way different than the usual instrumental reading of the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim! The setting is less of a bossa-inspired one than a post-Coltrane mode – as Victor Assis Brasil blows alto sax, and a bit of soprano – on long, stretched out versions of Jobim compositions – often given a bit of modal energy, thanks to the group's strong piano and organ performances by Dom Salvador. The rest of the players are all great, too – Helio Delmiro on guitar, Edson Lobo on bass, and Edison Machado on drums – all players who grew up in the bossa jazz years of the 60s, but who here are set free to explore new territory by producer Roberto Quartin. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Bonita", "Wave", "So Tinha De Ser Come Voce", and "Dindi". CD also features two bonus tracks – alternate takes of "Ao Amigo Quartin" and "Marilla". A seminal meeting between two of the most important modern jazz talents of the 70s – reedman Anthony Braxton, whose roots in the Chicago AACM scene were already expanding to a huge influence on the European world of free jazz – and guitarist Derek Bailey, the British player who seemingly stepped out of his own unique space to completely revolutionize the electric guitar! Both musicians are at their best here – working together at a level that's as much sonic exploration in terms of tones, textures, and timings – as it is new frontiers of music. And that's not to say that there's not some great musical moments, too – as the combination of darkness and light is what really makes the album special – as both players move effortlessly through an extended improvisation. Bailey plays electric guitar – and Braxton blows soprano, alto, b flat clarinet, and contrabass clarinet. The fantastic Jimmy Somerville is in the group here on vocals – a much soulful singer than some of his contemporaries, with a vibe that links the queer politics of the record back to an earlier disco generation – while also using all the right elements to make for an 80s electo vibe that helped get these tunes in front of many ears that never would have expected such content! The backings are great too – with almost a ZZT love of warmer samples next to contemporary electronics – further enhancing some of the soulful aspects of the set. Titles include the classic "Smalltown Boy", plus "Screaming", "No More War", "Love & Money", "I Feel Love", "Heatwave", "Junk", "Need A Man Blues", "Why", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". This version also features a huge amount of material! CD2 features an expanded version of the classic Hundreds & Thousands EP – with mixes that include "Hard Rain (Harvey Goldberg rmx)", "Smalltown Boy (Harvey Goldberg rmx)", "Run From Love (Dominic Maita rmx)", "Heatwave (Harvey Goldberg rmx)", "Why (Harvey Goldberg rmx)", and "Why (Harvey Goldberg rmx)" – plus "Infatuation/Memories", "Close To The Edge", "Love & Money (hundreds & thousands rmx)", "Cadillac Car (ext)", and "I Feel Love (cake mix)", which features Marc Almond. CD3 features added 12" mixes and other tracks – including "The Potato Fields", "I Feel Love (fruit mix)", "Puit D'Amour", "Signs & Wonders", "Smalltown Boy (US club rmx 84)", "Smalltown Boy (US club rmx 85)", "Smalltown Boy (12" version)", "I Feel Love (12" version with Marc Almond)', and "Red Dance". CD4 features a whole set of rare recordings – Capital Radio performances, early demos, and studio outtakes too! DVD features all the official early music videos – plus appearances on Top Of The Pops, and even TV advertisements too CD

Arista/FTG, 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A classic killer from trumpeter Tom Browne – a smoking set that still has all the jazz funk touches of his earlier records, yet which also picks up a bit of an electro vibe as well! The move here is a bit like that taken by some of Browne's labelmates on GRP at the time – particularly Bobby Broom and Bernard Wright – and offers up a great mix of jazzy roots and some of the newer sounds hitting the streets in the early 80s – a vibe that's maybe one of the first moments when older genres of music were beginning to show an influence from hip hop! Maurice Starr handles most of the production, and really makes things tight throughout – but Tom himself does a great job of keeping things interesting with the solos, augmenting the electric vibe with some rock-solid acoustic playing. Titles include "Rockin Radio", "Angeline", "Brighter Tomorrow", "Never My Love", "Mr Business", "Cruisin", and "Feel Like Makin Love". CD features bonus tracks – "Bye Gones (12" version)", "Rockin Radio (special 12" mix)", and "Cruisin (dub)". CD

A stunning solo debut from Jack Bruce – and a record that shows just how much more he had to offer the world than his work in Cream! Right from the start, the album's a thing of brilliance – with very offbeat lyrics penned by Pete Brown, but in ways that are a bit more down to earth than some of his own records – set to music arranged by Bruce, with all sorts of jazzy elements that come from the work of Harry Beckett and Henry Lower on trumpets, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Art Themen on tenor and soprano, and Jon Hiseman and John Marshall on drums – all key players who were in that special space between jazz and rock on the UK scene of the time! Bruce himself delivers lots of great work on bass, piano, and organ – and the great Chris Spedding brings in lots of guitar as well – on titles that include "Rope Ladder To The Moon", "The Ministry Of Bag", "Tickets To Waterfalls", "Boston Ball Game 1967", "To Isengard", "Theme For An Imaginary Western", and "Never Tell Your Mother She's Out Of Tune". 2CD package features bonus tracks – "Ministry Of Bag (demo)", "The Clearout (alt)", "Ministry Of Bag (alt)", "Weird Of Hermison (alt)", "Escapoe To Royal Wood (inst demo)", "Vikings (first attempt)", "Rope Ladder To The Moon (second attempt)", "You Burned The Tables On Me (inst demo)", and "Rope Ladder To The Moon (first demo)" – plus a remastered version of the original mix, and a new stereo mix. A bassy bassy classic from Tyrone Brunson – a heck of a great player on many other folks' albums at the time – and a darn compelling leader on his own! The set crackles with all the street soul vibe you might expect from the cover – breaking bits mixed with electro elements – yet also often given some jazzier warmth, too – in ways that really set the record apart from some of the similar work of the time – a tightness, and top shelf-ness that really holds together strongly over the course of the set. In addition to heavy work on bass, Brunson also sings a bit – and gets background help from vocalists Veronica Martin and Ethel Beatty. Titles include the classic "The Smurf", plus "Sticky Situation", "I Need Love", "Go For It", "Don't You Want It", "Hot Line", and "New Wave Disco Punk Funk Rock". Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 24.99
Peabo Bryson's early efforts for Capitol – Reaching For The Sky and Crosswinds in a 2CD set! Reaching For The Sky is a sublime blend of modern soul that's light years ahead of any of his later work. Part of the credit goes to Richard Evans – who's worked out these wonderfully smooth stepping arrangements that are a perfect accompaniment for Peabo's deep voice, but which also avoid any of the syrupy indulgence of later records. And sure, Peabo's still got that expressive tone – but he's keeping it mean and lean to let the music keep on going strongly. Titles include "Reaching For The Sky", "Hold On To The World", "Love From Your Heart", "Love Walked Out On Me", "You Haven't Learned About Love", and "Feel The Fire". Crosswinds is sweet, smooth, and soulful work from Peabo – a perfect little record that captures him at a point when he was definitely tightening up his act, but not falling into the soppier traps of later years! Production here is shared by Peabo with the great Johnny Pate – who seems to have a great ear for Bryson's maturing style – managing to couch the vocals in some of the more sophisticated modes formulated on the Chicago scene in previous years, but also with a bit of the west coast modern twist that Capitol was really bringing to the table in the soul business at the time! All tunes are originals by Peabo, and titles include "Crosswinds", "Smile", "She's A Woman", "Love Is Watching You", and "Don't Touch Me". The set includes 3 bonus tracks: "Reaching For The Sky (Edit)", "I'm So Into You" and "Crosswinds (Single Version)". CD

One of our favorite albums ever from the great guitarist Kenny Burrell – a smoking live session, and one that's got a bit more of an edge than some of his other records from the time! Kenny's guitar still has that impeccable tone throughout – but it's also matched by some wonderful tenor from the great Tina Brooks – making one of his few key Blue Note appearances here – in a massively cooking group that also features some piano from Bobby Timmons on three of the album's five tracks (Roland Hanna plays on the two others) – plus drums from Art Blakey, and bass from Ben Tucker – a pair wo work together wonderfully to create some really great grooves. Kenny himself seems to pick up great energy in the setting – and titles include "Lady Be Good", "Birk's Works", "36-23-36", and "Hallelujah". CD

Two classic Lloyd Charmers albums – both new to CD, and presented here with lots of first-time CD bonus tracks too! First up is the great Gold Connection album – an obscure little record, but a soulful one too – a rare 70s Federal Records session that mixes together reggae and soul – with vocals by a trio of female singers that includes a young Marcia Griffiths and Cynthia Schloss! Lots of tracks take a disco inspiration, but slow the pace down a lot more for the Kingston scene – so that the grooves are dubby steppers with a lot more going on at the bottom than their American counterparts up north – laidback, and given some nice instrumentation from Willie Lindo on bass, Harold Butler on keyboards, and Cedric Brooks on tenor! Titles include "That's The Way I Like It", "Fly Robin Reggae", "Love's Theme", "Soul Charm", "Do It Anyway Reggae", "Latin Hustle Reggae", and "Darling I Like It". Next up is Sweet Dreams, a very unique album from Jamaican sweet soul singer Dobby Dobson – an artist who seems to owe a bit to Sam Cooke, and who references music from Sam's era too – remaking some older cuts with a warmer, sweeter 70s vibe overall! The Lloyd Charmers production makes for an unusual blend of reggae and classic soul – and titles include "Little Stars", "Sweet Dreams", "Oh Gee", "You're Mine All Mine", "Muriel", "My Special Prayer", and "It's A Miracle". 2CD set features 20 more bonus tracks – including the great Supernatural Thing project from Richard Ace with Lloyd Charmers – and more tracks from Sister Stern, The Africans, Richard Ace, Delroy Wilson, and CHARM! Atco/HNE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 8CD ... $46.99 54.99 About February 7, 2025
The first four albums from this crucial group – along with four more CDs of rare live material too! First up is the self-titled Cactus – the first album from this legendary group – an important American hard rock powerhouse, driven by the famous rhythm duo of Tim Bogert on bass and Carmine Appice on drums – both of whom roll out of the gate here with amazingly frenetic energy! They're maybe only topped by the guitar work of Jim McCarty, whose searing lines are clearly learned from blues inspirations, then turned up in both speed and power – to match the vocals and harmonica of Rusty Day! There's nothing going on here that sounds like blues rock at all – even though the set begins with a cover of "Parchman Farm" – next to other titles that include "My Lady From South Of Detroit", "No Need To Worry", "You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover", and "Let Me Swim". On One Way Or Another, Cactus are totally at the top of their game – and the guitar of Jim McCarthy really sets the record on fire, right from the very first note – at a level that should have made Jim one of the real guitar hero legends of his generation! Yet there's also power from the whole group going on too – tight rhythms from the team of Carmine Appice and Jim Bogert, the latter of whom starts to bring in his own vocals a fair bit more, offering backup to the raspy lead of Rusty Day. And while there's a few currents that show their older influence from blues, the sound here is massively hard rock all the way through – making the record a great illustration of the way that slavish blues rock gave birth to a fresh new jamming sound in a matter of just a few short years. Titles include "Rockout Whatever You Feel Like", "Song For Aries", "Feel So Bad", "Rock N Roll Children", and "Hometown Bust". Restrictions is next, and despite the title, there's no restrictions at all – as Cactus seem to be even more confident, more able to stretch their wings and fly than ever before – even adding in some extra piano and keyboards at points to the core guitar-heavy sound of the quartet! All the group's best elements are very firmly in place – searing guitar, righteously confident vocals, and a strutting sensibility that makes this early 70s album way ahead of the game in terms of territory that so many bigger groups would later copy for their own classic records. Titles include "Guiltless Glider", "Evil Alaska", "Sweet Sixteen", "Bag Drag", "Restrictions", and "Mean Night In Cleveland". Ot N Sweaty is a record that's got a bit of a shift in the classic Cactus lineup – as the group's still driven strongly by the work of Carmine Appice on drums and Tim Bogert on bass, but get guitar power from Werner Fritzschings, who's a pretty amazing player – next to some added keyboards from Duane Hitchings, and vocals from Peter French – a singer who's ballsy power might be even more in line with the group than their previous lead singer! The album's got an unusual approach in that side one was recorded live, side two in the studio – each with a nicely different flavor as a result – on titles that include "Swim", "Our Lil Rock N Roll Thing", "Bedroom Mazurka", "Telling You", "Bad Stuff", and "Bringing Me Down". 8CD set is overflowing with great material – bonus tracks added to three of the four albums in the collection, than a further 4CDs worth of live material – titled Fully Unleashed – The Live Gigs Vols 1 & 2. The live material is great – and really shows the tightness of the group at their best! CD

Island/Esoteric (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
A real highpoint in the career of the great John Cale – three full albums recorded for Island Records, with some great bonus material too! First up is Fear – one of the best solo albums ever from John Cale – a set that has the singer playing a lot of piano alongside his vocals, which creates this moody, evocative quality that's really wonderful! Cale's songwriting is always pretty compelling, but the heavy use of piano really brings out a depth to his lyrics here – further enforced by the relatively spacious sense of recording used throughout. A few numbers add in more electric elements – but with Brian Eno along on electronics and listed as a co-producer, the record's definitely got this balance between elements that's very careful. Phil Manzanera plays guitar, and also helped with the overall construction of the set – and you can hear some of the best elements of his own solo sets too. Titles include the classic "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend", plus "Gun", "The Man Who Couldn't Afford To Orgy", "You Know More Than I Know", "Momamma Scuba", and "Buffalo Ballet". Slow Dazzle is dazzling work from John Cale – exactly the kind of record that shows why his solo years were so great! The record's got this unusual vibe – on one hand, it's put together like a more conventional rock set of the time – but on the other, it's got strange dark currents that run through the whole thing in very weird ways – a bit like some of the Roxy Music edges from the early years. No surprise, both Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera contribute strongly to the set – but the energy of the record definitely comes from Cale's great songwriting and offbeat vocals – and his great ear for a weird-sounding tune. Titles include "Mr Wilson", "Rollaroll", "Ski Patrol", "Guts", "The Jeweller", and Cale's famous version of "Heartbreak Hotel". Helen Of Troy is a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Titles include "Cable Hogue", "Engine", "Save Us", "My Maria", "I Keep A Close Watch", "Helen Of Troy", and "Sudden Death" – plus a cover of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Sylvia Said", "All I Want Is You", "Bamboo Floor", "The Jeweller (alternate)", "Mary Lou", "You & Me", and "Coral Moon". Majestic Motown from the 70s – an almost-overlooked record, but a surprisingly sophisticated gem that's well worth discovering again! The album's definitely soul at the core, but embraces so many other rich styles too – and at points, almost feels like some of the most ambitious material of the Cadet/Concept scene in Chicago – especially given the full orchestrations on the tracks, handled by Jimmy Haskell and Jerry Long! Leonard Caston's the real genius behind the record, though – and works here to provide great support for co-vocalist Carolyn Majors – who trades leads back and forth with him, and is sometimes showcased on tracks that really let her heavenly vocals take off! The whole thing's great – and titles include an early version of the cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window", which was later recorded by other groups – plus "Child Of Love", "There's Fear", "Satisfied Mind", "Let There Be Love", "No One Will Know", and "Say You Love Me True". CD features loads of bonus tracks too – 9 more numbers that act as a great second chapter to the album – titles that include "Mother's Son", "What About The Price", "If I Can", "We're Together", "I've Got To Fly", "Don't Let", and "I'm Flying Your Sky". A wonderful female soul trio from the Chicago scene of the 70s – and one we'd stand strongly next to the best gal groups from the Philly or New York scenes! In fact, Coffee were a bit unique in the city – which mostly had male groups getting the record contracts during the decade – and they're given strong soul focus here by Clarence Johnson, the indie soul producer who'd given the city so much other great music over the years! The album's definitely got a disco vibe, but these gals can sing a lot deeper than the usual club trio, too – vocals that are much more trained in an older school mode, ala The Emotions – and which come across nicely on some of the mellower cuts too. Titles include great reworkings of two earlier Chicago soul gems – the Lovelites' classic "How Can I Tell My Mom & Dad", redone as "Mom & Dad 1980", and a fresh new take on Ruby Andrews "Casanova". An early gem from the great Sam Cooke – a pre-RCA session, but one that already has Sam showing a stronger jazzy side of his talents – as you might guess from the title! The Lady, in this case, is the late Billie Holiday – recently passed at the time of this recording, and lovingly paid tribute to by a young Sam Cooke – with vocals that have a perfect blend of sweet and raspy to really unlock the tension in Holiday's music – yet also deliver the sound with a much different vibe overall. The set's a great example of how strongly Cooke could sing in a sophisticated jazzy style – and he does a great job with Holiday standards like "God Bless The Child", "Solitude", "Lover Girl", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me". Rene Hall did the orchestrations – and the album's an interesting example of how Cooke, like Holiday, could work within conventional forms to work a subtly progressive agenda! That's definitely the case here, as Steve unites some great talents in pure sonic unity – a lineup that includes Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Ralph Moore on tenor, Rene Rosnes on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – artists we love in their own right, really soaring together here with Davis! The horn balance is especially nice, and even more stunning when the solos break out individually – and titles include "We See", "To Wisdom The Prize", "Star Eyes", "Milestones", and "Up Jumped Spring". CD also features the tracks "Ask Me Now" and "All Blues". CD

A key early album on the Sackville label – and a hell of a late-life session from the great Wild Bill Davison – blowing cornet here in an open-ended setting that makes the record one of his best from the later days – and maybe one of his best overall! The group's definitely an all-star one – Herb Hall on clarinet, Benny Morton on trombone, Claude Hopkins on piano, Arvell Shaw on bass, and Buzzy Drootin on drums – the last two of whom kick in some occasional modern rhythms that really keep things moving! Titles include "Struttin With Some Barbecue", "Dardanella", "Black & Blue", "Blue Again", and "Yesterdays". CD features two bonus tracks not on the original album! CD

GAD (Poland), 1975. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Very groovy work from the Polish arranger Henryk Debich – sounds that are every bit as funky as his classic String Beat album from the time – and done in a mode that often mixes some of the cooler soundtrack styles of the 70s with a range of styles that move between thoughtful instrumental passages to some more upbeat, almost disco-oriented grooves! Yet there's also a lot more going on here than those references might imply – especially as Debich has this great ear for color, so that there's a vivid energy on all the titles, as they work together to create the kind of well-rounded album of overflowing goodness that you might expect to hear from one of the bigger European sound library giants of the time. Titles include "Monika", "W Stylu Burta Bacharacha", "Czy Przyjedziesz", "Zupa Z Zolwia", "Choral W Es", and "Dno Oka". CD also features four bonus tracks too! CD

Jazzy disco grooves from Henryk Debich and his long-running broadcast orchestra – a group who were well-schooled in jazz modes from years past, and were very able to soar with upbeat rhythms in the latter half of the 70s! The tunes here echo some of the best sound library modes of Western European labels of the time – core instrumentation on keyboards, saxes, and trumpets – augmented by larger arrangements that help the grooves come on with a nicely sweeping sort of vibe! Titles include a great take on the Komeda tune "Dwaj Ludzie Z Safa", with mighty nice Fender Rhodes – plus "Tylko Trzy Dni", "Nibeezpieczny Rajd" "Kama", "Wymarzona", and "Feeria". RCA, 1963. Used ... $2.99
That's "Take Ten", not "Take Five" – a great title cut that echoes Paul Desmond's previous work with Dave Brubeck – but which then gives way quickly to some sweet bossa-styled grooves done with guitar from Jim Hall! The album's one of the strongest of the Hall/Desmond collaborations for RCA – A sublime showcase not just for Paul's impeccable alto, but also for the amazing tones and chromes that fly freely from the strings of Jim's guitar! Both players are set up with just a bit of gentle backing – light percussion from Connie Kay, and a bit of bass from Gene Cherico or Gene Wright. The whole thing's a well-conceived study in economy, as the two players craft sly and subtle lines around spare drum and bass backings – slowly hanging sound in space to weave a rich web of sound that's as compelling as it seems to be effortless! Titles include "Take Ten", "El Prince", "Embarcadero", "Samba De Orfeu", "Theme From Black Orpheus", and "Alone Together". CD also features alternate takes of "Embarcadero" and "El Prince". CD

Paul Desmond doesn't get any better than this – blowing his icy cool alto next to warm guitar lines from the mighty Jim Hall – a classic RCA Records pairing in jazz, heard to great effect on this classic album! There's a slight bossa groove to some of the rhythms, which is great for Desmond's sound – and the backing is also free of piano, so the guitar and alto hang together wonderfully by themselves – suspended in space, dipping and turning around each other beautifully! The pair get some very light rhythmic accompaniment from Connie Kay on drums, and either Percy Heath or Gene Wright on bass – on titles that include "That Old Feeling", "Easy Living", "Blues For Fun", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "When Joanna Loved Me". ✨✧ Raul DeSouzaSweet Lucy/Don't Ask My Neighbors/Til Tomorrow Comes (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of albums from this famous Brazilian trombonist – all of them great! First up is Sweet Lucy – a wonderful album from Raul De Souza, cut during the height of his fame on the California scene! Like Raul's other work for Capitol, this record really sparkles from tight help from George Duke – who handles production, and some of the arrangements – and really helps De Souza find a tight jazzy groove! The instrumentation is a bit leaner than some of Raul's other records of this nature, which is a nice thing – as you get to hear plenty of keyboards from Patrice Rushen, Fender Rhodes from Dawilli Gonga, trumpet from Freddie Hubbard, and percussion from Airto. There's a bit of chorus vocals at times, but the main focus is on Raul's trombone solos – and cuts include of Joao Donato's "Banana Tree", plus "Sweet Lucy", "New Love", "Wild & Shy", "Bottom Heat", "Wires", and "At Will". Don't Ask My Neighbors is a tremendous moment for trombonist Raul De Souza – working here in a style that's light years past his roots in bossa nova! The set's got a heavy California vibe – a late 70s blend of jazz and soul handled by producer George Duke, who also arranges many tracks on the record – but still leaves plenty of room for Raul to step out strongly in the lead! Things are never too overdone, and handled with that sunny style that players like Duke did so well – lots of warm jazzy elements in the backings, coming from Fender Rhodes by Bobby Lyle, percussion from Airto, and drums from the great Harvey Mason – who really brings an edge to some of the groovers. Titles include a killer cover of the Skip Scarborough tune "Don't Ask My Neighbors" – plus "La La Song", "Overture", "At The Concert", "I Believe You", and "Jump Street". Til Tomorrow Comes is filled with soaring sounds from Raul De Souza – a Brazilian musician who first recorded under the name of Raulzinho during the bossa nova years – but one who's at the height of his powers here working on the Cali scene at the end of the 70s! Raul manages to blend his lead instrument with fuller arrangements from Arthur Wright – who brings in plenty of the best elements from contemporary R&B, adds in some backing vocals, yet never diminishes Raul's presence on the record at all! Instead, De Souza seems to draw all sorts of energy from the folks around him on the sessions for the record – really stepping out with the best sort of jazz funk grooves that Capitol Records were laying down at the time – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Up & At It", "Self Sealing", "Pleasurize", "Fe No Me Nol", and "Til Tomorrow comes". CD features bonus tracks – single versions of "Til Tomorrow Comes", "Sweet Lucy", and "Daisy Mae". CD

Lyrics are great – nearly all originals by Bo himself, with that hip swinging, and hard-wailing approach that was always a lot of fun – and cuts include "Gunslinger", "Diddling", "Cheyenne", "Cadillac", and "Doing The Craw-Daddy". The format is quite unusual – as each side features a long instrumental jam that really lets the guitarists work out their differences – in modes that are almost proto-funk more than blues, rock, or soul – with lots of wicked guitar lines that are way ahead of their time in terms of recording space! A completely unique little session – and a record that's every bit as musically striking as you might guess from its title and cover! The date's a rare Latin-tinged one for trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a record that takes his usually smooth sound and sets it up against octet backings with horns from JJ Johnson on trombone, Cecil Payne on baritone sax, and Hank Mobley on tenor – plus piano from Horace Silver, bass from Oscar Pettiford, and drums from Art Blakey – plus added congas from Patato Valdes! The expanded group plays with a great sense of power – really pushing Kenny's sound tremendously – and although the album also features a few tracks by a smaller group with less percussion, these also have a bit of a Latin/exotic tinge too. Salsoul/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 4CDs ... $32.99 39.99
A huge selection of work from Double Exposure – maybe our favorite group on the legendary Salsoul label from the 70s! The set features three full albums, plus lots of bonus tracks – and the first set is Ten Percent – a wonderful album and one of those underground classics that seems to show up in everyone's record collection, even though it was never a huge chart hit. Double Exposure are part of the "second wave" of East Coast vocal groups – and like their contemporaries, they mix the sweet harmony soul tradition of earlier years with the burgeoning clubby sound that was coming out of Philly. The set's produced by the Baker/Harris/Young team – who also play on the album along with the rest of the Sigma Sound crew – and the songs feature some stunning anthemic club numbers, plus a few surprisingly sweet harmony tunes. Includes their huge cut "Ten Percent", the amazing positivist groover "Everyman" – and the cuts "My Love Is Free", "Gonna Give My Love Away", and "Just Can't Say Hello". Next is Fourplay – sublime work from one of our favorite groups ever on Salsoul Records – the amazing harmony quartet Double Exposure – soaring out here in a set of Philly gems produced by Norman Harris! The album's got a wonderful sound right from the start – rich in rhythms, yet also soaring on harmonies that few other Philly acts could even touch – especially at this point in the 70s, when the group sound seemed to be waning a bit on other fronts. In a way, Double Exposure really carry on the best tradition of the east coast scene with a set like this – pushing things forward with rolling grooves for the clubs, yet also showing that they still can have a special way with a ballad too – a blend that's maybe only matched by Teddy Pendergrass-era work by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. Titles include "Newsy Neighbors", "Perfect Lover", "There's Something Missing", "Handy Man", and "Why Do You Have to Leave". The last full album is Locker Room – a record with a bouncy groove that's topped by the quartet's wonderfully warm harmonies – easily some of the best from the disco generation, served up in a careful classy style that makes them a perfect heir to some of the initial harmony grooves from the east coast scene of the early 70s! Norman Harris here handles production with associates Bruce Hawes, Ron Kersey, and Ron Baker – all of whom ensure just the right blend of Philly poise and soulful swing – and titles include "Can We Be In Love", "(Where Have You Been) All My Life", "I've Got The Hots For Ya", "I Wish That I Could Make Love To You", and "Why Do We Have To Go Our Separate Ways". 4CD set features 24 bonus tracks too – all the rare 12" and 7" mixes of cuts from the Salsoul period – plus other rarities and remixes too, even some great later remixes by folks like Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Work, and Joey Negro! Three wonderful albums from this overlooked group – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Crossroads Of Time, great work from a group who definitely are in the budding years of the UK progressive scene – but one who also knows how to stick to a tighter combo sound too! The record's got a really wonderful vibe – the full-on fire of some late beat group work, but much more farther-reaching in conception – both lyrically and instrumentally, especially when some light production touches kick in to do great things to the organ and vocals. The musical themes are a bit heady, too – some nicely political touches, but in a subtle way – and the group also turn out a nice cover of Love's "7 + 7 Is", alongside other tracks that include "Crossroads Of Time", "I'll Be Your Friend", "Prodigal Son", "Largo", "Love is The Law", and "Inspiration For A New Day". Next is In Fields Of Ardath – very cool work from this unique Welsh group of the 60s a combo who might have started out in beat group modes, but really go for something different on this unique set! Eyes Of Blue have this spacious style that almost recalls the Moody Blues at times – but they're also much more gritty and soulful as well – almost as if they hit territory between the Moodies first record and their ambitious later works, but also draw on wider musical references that have them covering a Django Reinhardt tune on one track, and throwing in some classical references on another. Titles include the cut "Merry Go Round", which they did for a film with Quincy Jones – plus "The Light We See", "Souvenirs", "Little Bird", "Door", "Spanish Blues", "Chances", and "After The War". The set also features the really beautiful album Bluebell Wood – recorded by an incarnation of the group as Big Sleep, and with a different sound that's really great – moodier, mellower, and with slow-building piano and organ lines doing all these great things next to the vocals! Titles include "Saint & Septic", "Odd Song", "Free Life", "Death Of Hope", "Watching Love Grow", and "Bluebell Wood". Bonus tracks include "Apache 69 (mono)" and "QIII (mono)". CD

The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 19.99
A nice little package, one that brings together three American releases of music by London's legendary Georgie Fame! First up is the classic Yeh Yeh – a brilliant mix of jazz, soul, and R&B – all filtered through a mod sort of London freshness, as early proof that the city could always take some great things from our own musical roots, and feed it back to us with a whole new flavor! Georgie Fame's no copycat here, though – and the sound is instantly Fame-like – a style that's really not the sort that any Americans were doing at the time, and certainly never this well. Hard-burning Hammond colors most of the tunes here – played with a tightly vamping quality – but it's Georgie's charmingly crackling vocals that really win us over! Titles include "Gimme That Wine", "Pink Champagne", "Monkeying Around", "I Love The Life I Live", "Point Of No Return", "Preach & Teach", "Get On The Right Track Baby", and the hit "Yeh Yeh". Next is Get Away – a great little album from Georgie Fame – with a hard raw soul sound that shows what a big crossover potential he had with the UK soul market – so much so that this batch of material was issued in the US as well! The album's got some wonderful arrangements – quite raw, with some nice organ, and plenty of heavy vocals from Georgie in a strong blue eyed soul mode. Titles include "Sitting In The Park", "Get Away", "Sweet Thing", "Ride Your Pony", "The In Crowd", "Last Night", and "Music Talk". Hall Of Fame is a bit of a best-of – a record that features some singles, and some album tracks – the latter of which aren't included here, as they'd be duplicated. The remaining material is Fame at his raw early best – working in a great soulful style, with plenty of jazzy charms – on cuts that include "Outrage", "Lil Darlin", "Sunny", "In The Meantime", "Something", "Do Re Mi", and Fame's own "Like We Used To Be". CD also features 9 more bonus tracks, some live recordings – titles that include "Bend A Little", "Telegram", "It Ain't Right", "Don't Make Promises", "Many Happy Returns", "I'm In Love With You", "Shop Around", "Green Onions", and "Do The Dog". Blistering early work from a young Georgie Fame – a set that definitely lives up to the Rhythm & Blues in the title! The set was recorded live at London's hip Flamingo club – and Georgie and The Blue Flames are very much in command of the crowd – burning with the intensity of a American small organ combo, especially the early 60s variety that often played equal parts soul jazz and R&B! Georgie's on the Hammond, and also sings with a rough-edged style that's plenty soulful, and incredibly appealing – a mode that oozes charisma, but never sounds fake or forced. Other instrumentation includes tenor, baritone sax, bass, drums, and conga – plus some great guitar from Big Jim Sullivan – and titles include "Do The Dog", "Eso Beso", "Work Song", "Baby Please Don't Go", "Shop Around", "Humpty Dumpty", and "You Can't Sit Down". John Wetton's joined the group for this album, and adds in bass and a bit of vocals – and seems to really jump start their sound in a great way – and the production is great, too – really opening up with some of those new styles that were helping change the UK scene as progressive acts found a way to pack more into a smaller space – resulting in shorter tunes that still bristled with plenty of excitement! The vocal interplay is especially great – and titles include "Between Blue & Me", "Spanish Tide", "Burning Bridges", "Take Your Partners", "Crinkly Grin", "Larf & Sing", "Save Some For Thee", and "Satdy Barfly". This edition features the bonus cuts "In My Own Time" and "Seasons" added to the main album – and CD2 and CD3 feature rare material recorded for the BBC – 21 more live tracks, with lots of great readings of other tunes as well as album material! ✨✧ FannyFanny – The Reprise Years 1970 to 1973 (Fanny/Charity Ball/Fanny Hill/Mother's Pride/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Reprise/Cherry Red (UK), Early 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 39.99
Four full albums from this legendary all-female rock group – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is the debut album from Fanny – a group who were noteworthy in being one of the first all-female lineups to challenge the male-dominated world of major label rock at the start of the 70s – but who also have a quality that more than helps them stand on their own, even without that designation! There's definitely a bit of a Bay Area vibe to the group – as they seem very comfortable moving between rocking territory and warmer moments – including some lighter, folksy touches that have the very personal vibe of some of the scene up in Marin. Richard Perry produced, but the sound is nicely stripped-down – just a focus on the very strong songwriting skills of the group, on titles that include "I Just Realized", "Conversation With A Cop", "Changing Horses", "Seven Roads", "Shade Me", and "Take A Message To The Captain". Next is Charity Ball – a hard-rocking classic from Fanny – the group's second album, and the one that put the all-female quartet on the map! At some level, there's not that much going on here that's different than some of their contemporaries – but the record's got a lean, playful energy that really comes through when the vocals unite – which they do often in most of the best parts! Titles include the mini-hit "Charity Ball", plus "Cat Fever", "Soul Child", "Place In The Country", "What's Wrong With Me", "Special Care", "Person Like You", and "You're The One". On Fanny Hill, Fanny have a slightly more ambitious vibe than on some of their previous albums – in part because the set was recorded at the Apple Studios in London, with production by Richard Perry – who really does a great job of elevating all the elements the group had on their previous records! The vocal interplay is even more complex and compelling than before, and there's some larger arrangements that almost seem to echo the best use of such modes by the late Beatles – as does the group's great reworking of their "Hey Bulldog". Other titles include "Blind Alley", "You've Got A Home", "Borrowed Time", "Think About The Children", "Rock Bottom Blues", "Sound & The Fury", and "The First Time". Mother's Pride is the last album in the original Reprise Records run of records from Fanny, and a set that features superb production work from Todd Rundgren – a studio force who really seems to help the combo focus their energy in mighty nice ways! The set's got a quality that goes head to head with so many other classics from the time – able to serve up some gentler tunes that are a great surprise, and some more heavy numbers of the sort that were always the group's calling card. Titles include "Old Hat", "Long Road Home", "All Mine", "Summer Song", "Solid Gold", and "Last Night I Had A Dream". 4CD set features 82 tracks in all, 8 of which are on CD for the first time – material all sourced from the Warner archives, with titles that include "New Day", "Lady's Choice", "One Step At A Time", "Candlighter Man", "Back In My Arms Again", "A Little While Later", "Tomorrow", "Young & Dumb", "No Deposit No Return", and lots lots more. ✨✧ Fat MattressHow Can I Live – The Complete Recordings (Fat Mattress 1 & 2/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $30.99 38.99
An overstuffed package of work from this short-lived but excellent group! First up is the self-titled debut from Fat Mattress – a very cool UK group who were started by bassist Noel Redding after leaving the Jimi Hendrix Experience – an excellent combo who show that Noel had all sorts of fantastic ideas of his own! There's some surprisingly soulful currents running through the music – heavy drums that root some of the tracks in a great way – and this quality that's almost freakbeat at times too! Redding plays guitar instead of bass here, and really opens up the sound a lot on the instrument – in ways that are very different than you might expect from his work with Jimi – and the set also features some guest flute by the legendary Chris Wood. Titles include "Mr Moonshine", "All Night Drinker", "Petrol Pump Assistant", "How Can I Live", "Everything's Blue", and "Bright New Way". Next is Fat Mattress II – a set that's even more mindblowing than the great debut from Fat Mattress – music that has late psych touches moving into harder rock territory at times – qualities that maybe come from the fact that Noel Redding stepped aside when the album was being recorded! Neil Landon provides great additional vocals, and there's some more prominent keyboards here than before – although Steve Hammond's guitar still sounds mighty nice! As before, there's a wonderfully tuneful quality to the music – never too overindulgent, and with a sound that makes the group one of the great overlooked acts of their time. Titles include "The Storm", "Anyway You Want", "Leafy Lunes", "Naturally", "Roaming", "Happy My Love", "Childhood Dream", "She", "Highway", "At The Ball", and "People". 3CD package is overflowing with bonus tracks – including the US mix of their debut record – plus singles, outtakes, radio cuts, and titles recorded for their unissued third album – 50 tracks in all, with bonus material that includes "Hall Of Kings", "Margarita", "Future Days", "Which Way To Go", "Iridescent Butterfly", "Eric The Red", and "Little Girl In White". AaliyahI Care 4 U ... LP
Atlantic/Empire, 2002. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 25.99
The lovely Aaliyah left our planet all too soon, and left behind a number of unissued tracks as well – material intended for a future album, and which was combined here with a few other tracks to make for a posthumous tribute to her too-short legacy in R&B! The practice is, unfortunately, a common one in the worlds of R&B and hip hop – and although the set's maybe not a standard album by Aaliyah, it's certainly a great addition to the lineup. Titles include "Miss You", "Come Over", "Rock The Boat", "Erica Kane", "We Need A Resolution", "Got To Give It Up (rmx)", "Back & Forth", "Are You That Somebody", "I Care 4 U", "One In A Million", "At Your Best", "Don't Know What To Tell Ya", "Try Again", and "All I Need". Johnny AdamsSouth Side Of Soul Street – The SSS Sessions (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
SSS International/Sun, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
A long-overdue second full length albums from the SSS International years of the great Johnny Adams – tracks that were mostly issued as singles by the label, and which come together here with a punch that's even harder than the work on his Heart & Soul album from the time! Adams has a voice that's definitely trained in the deep soul modes of the south, but also gets some groovier help that's more in keeping with the SSS approach – a bit funky at times, nicely gritty at others – on titles that include "South Side Of Soul Street", "Give Me A Chance", "Release Me", "Proud Woman", "I Won't Cry", "In A Moment Of Weakness", "You Made A New Man Out Of Me", "I've Got Too Much To Lose", and "Living On Your Love". ✨✧ Pepper AdamsCritics' Choice – Pepper Adams ... LP
World Pacific, 1957. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A real lost treasure from Pacific Jazz – a rare late 50s west coast session from Pepper Adams, featuring the amazing baritonist in a group with Lee Katzman on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums! The sound is incredible – on a par with that rare few of Adams' other magnificent albums as a leader – modern, yet soulful, and with a fluid feel that makes it hard to believe that Pepper's working with a baritone sax. Tracks are all longish, and feature some nice unusual numbers that include "Minor Mishap", "Blackout Blues", "High Step", "5021", and "Zec". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label World Pacific pressing with deep groove! Vinyl is great – cover has some light wear, and a small bit of tape and tiny bit of pen on back.)

Pepper AdamsPepper Adams Quintet ... CD
Mode/Muzak (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $8.99 24.99
An obscure late 50s gem from Pepper – a stripped-down quartet session that has him blowing in a very open-ended mode – quite a difference from some of his more tightly arranged sets! The feel's a bit like Pepper's work with Donald Byrd, but even more openly swinging – played by a quintet that includes Stu Williamson on trumpet, Carl Perkins on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Tracks are all long and fresh – and the record's almost got the feel of a great Prestige blowing session from the time. Pepper's work on baritone is jaw-dropping throughout – and titles include "Unforgettable", "Baubles Bangles & Beads", "Freddie Froo", and "Muezzin". CD

Pepper Adams & The Tommy Banks TrioLive At Room At The Top ... CD
Reel To Reel, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 24.99
Pepper Adams is easily one of the hippest players you'll ever hear on the baritone sax – an artist who changed in great ways over the decades, and always seemed to deliver something special when he got a chance to record as a leader! That's definitely the case here – as Adams stretches out on these really long tracks – blowing his horn with the kind of longform imagination that you might hear on a tenor performance of this nature by Dexter Gordon or Johnny Griffin – on a rare Canadian live date with backing from the trio of pianist Tommy Banks! Banks is a great player – with a nice raw edge that really brings a lot out of Adams – and titles are all very long, with versions of "Patrice", "Oleo", "Civilization & Its Discontents", and "Three & One". CD features bonus tracks "Stella By Starlight" and "Time On My Hands". CD

Cannonball AdderleyBurnin' In Bordeaux – Live In France 1969 ... CD
Elemental, 1969. New Copy 2CDs ... $22.99 24.99
The hippest side of Cannonball Adderley at the end of the 60s – that loose, soulful vibe he was serving up on some of his coolest records for Capitol at the time – stretched out here over some very long tracks recorded live in France! The year alone marks the record as a great one – as Cannon in 1969 could do no wrong – and he's working here with his crack quintet that includes Nat Adderley on cornet, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – plus the mighty Joe Zawinul on both acoustic and electric piano – really finding his groove here, with that incredible sense of chunky rhythm that really seemed to set Cannonball and Nat on fire! There's a much darker edge to the music than on some of Adderley's more popular Capitol albums of the late 60s – a great reminder that in a live setting, this group can bring together all sorts of surprises. Titles include "Why Am I Treated So Bad", "The Scavenger", "Experience In E", "Blue No Boogie", "Walk Tall", "Come Sunday", "Work Song", and "Manha De Carnaval". CD
