SidewindersFlatfoot Hustlin ... LP
Great Eastern/P-Vine (Japan), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
Rare Canadian funk from the 70s – played by a hip little group who've also got a jazzy flavor too! The Sidewinders are a bit like American ensemble funk acts of the time – in that they can have an upbeat, tight approach to the groove when they want – but they also have a great ear for some gentler moments too, and sparkle almost even more on some of the ballad numbers on the set. Even the fuller groovers have some great standout elements – including sax bits that soar nicely out of the larger horn section – and overall, the album's got a great sense of character and personality, and is far more than just a few cats from up north trying to copy an American groove. Titles include "I Like Your Stuff", "A Voyage", "I Like To Dance", "Time For Loving", "Flat Foot Hustlin", "Can't You Feel The Fire", and "Gift To The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The second trip into the studio for Cedar Walton's mighty Eastern Rebellion ensemble – and every bit as great as the first! This time around, the lineup's a bit different – with Bob Berg in on tenor, and Curtis Fuller expanding the group on trombone – but the groove is still the same – wonderfully in the pocket soul jazz, swinging with a gentle and fluid glide that's really tremendous. The work ranks up there with the best of Walton's recordings ever – and the tunes are all originals with a rich imagination for tone, soul, and color – and plenty of space for strong solo work. Titles include "The Maestro", "Sunday Suite", "Ojos De Rojo", "Fantasy In D", and "Clockwise". CD

Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $22.99 25.99
Greasy Mike's been making the global rounds on records like this – serving up an imagined landscape of weird and wonderful sounds, all pulled from rare singles of late 50s/early 60s vintage! We're not sure Mike's efforts will ever win him a harem, but he's done a great job here – coming up with tunes that often have some slight exotic or Eastern sort of vibe, mixed with more familiar American sounds of the time – like electric guitar or Latin percussion! Titles include "Ole Tsasa" by Valisas & His Slaves, "Desert Wind" by The Vaqueros, "Cairo Twist" by The Royce McAfee Combo, "Cobra" by The Boys, "Sahara" by The Cotillions, "Port Said" by The Kasuals, "Moroc-Kin" by Arabian Knights, "Snake Charmer" by Torrents, "The Bagdad Fantasy" by Ilo Kay & His Trio, and "Istanbul" by Jol Coyes Boys. ✨✧ Gabor SzaboHis Great Hits ... LP
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent 2LP collection of some of the best work that Gabor Szabo recorded for the Impulse label during the mid and late 60s – tracks that mixed together jazz, Eastern spiritualism, and a hip 60s pop sensibility. At one time, we used to dismiss this stuff as too cheesy for our tastes – but going back to it, we find that it's not cheesy at all, and instead find the tracks to be incredibly inspired and visionary. Szabo's guitar is as groovy as ever – and other players include Tom Scott, Gary McFarland, Chico Hamilton, Sadao Watanabe, and Bill Plummer. Titles include "Evil Eye", "Mountain Heir", "Krishna", "Gypsy 66", "Lady Gabor", "Search For Nirvana", "Space", and "Spellbinder". LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from this legendary group – a special set of live material that really has them stretching out on extended tunes that are maybe even more powerful than the group's famous work in the studio! A key part of the sound here is tenorist George Coleman, who always sounds wonderful when he gets a chance to open up like this – very spiritual and deep, and perfect in the company of Cedar Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums! Most tracks push well past the 10 minute mark – which also allows for some stunning solos from Walton – and titles include great takes on "Naima", "Seven Minds", "Firm Roots", "Bolivia", and "Blue Monk". Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
An expanded version of the quartet you'd usually expect to hear in this classic Eastern Rebellion series – and a group that really makes all the best of all their added elements! In addition to Cedar Walton's amazing work on piano, the set also features Curtis Fuller on trombone, Chocolate Armenteros on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, David Williams on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – the last three of whom are familiar Rebellion partners, but who get some new power in the lead from the presence of Fuller and Armenteros! Chocolate's horn seems to lead the group into some Latin jazz modes – which really open up Billy Higgins' work on the kit in a great way – and Walton responds with a strongly rhythmic version of his lyrical mode. Titles include "Close Enough For Love", "Manteca", "Groundwork", "St Thomas", and "I Am Not So Sure". CD

✨✧ John Berberian & The Middle Eastern EnsembleMiddle Eastern Rock ... CD
Verve/Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Don't think "rock", think "groove" – because oud player John Berberian takes his instrument into some very groovy territory here – mixing its Mid-East roots with a sweet array of modal rhythms and psychedelic elements – all of which make for an album that's even trippier than you'd guess from its cover! The album's one of the few "jazz meets world" sets that really gets things right – bringing together different global elements to come up with a sound that's wonderfully new and fresh – and which moves the whole thing way past its roots in Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and North African styles! Joe Beck plays some great electric guitar on the record – but the main string focus is on the oud, which Berberian uses with this exotic tinge that rivals the instrument in the hands of Ahmed Abdul-Malik on his own albums like this. The lineup also includes tenor and other reeds from Souren Baronian, plus other percussion, and nice use of electric bass to hold the whole groove together – and titles include "The Oud & The Fuzz", "Tranquility", "Chem-oo-Chem", "Iron Maiden", "Flying Hye", "3/8=5/8=8/8", and "The Magic Ground". ✨✧ Malcolm ArnoldNine Hours To Rama/The Lion ... CD
Vocalion (UK), 1962/1963. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Two compelling 60s soundtracks from British composer Malcolm Arnold! The set begins with Arnold's great music to the film Nine Hours To Rama – a thriller about Ghandi's assassination, set to musical themes that mix 60s dramatic scoring with some elements of Indian music! Arnold's score is nicely serious in parts, but also has some more driving, percussive sections too – bits of tabla or other percussion that give the music some Eastern flavors – and some vocal passages as well. Titles include "Natu Tells Rani Of His Oath", "Das Warns Ghandi", "Train Coming Into Delhi", "The Fire", "Indian Concert Drums", and "Malabar Hill". Arnold's score to The Lion is also set in colonial territory – a meeting of Malcolm's more traditional scoring with the African setting of the film! There's not as many African touches in the music as you might expect – as the orchestrations are mostly full and dramatic – but there's definitely a few attempts at more exotic moments, especially in some of the percussion used. The music represented here by the tracks from the UK 7" EP – a total of 5 numbers that include "King Dance Of Happiness", "Tina's Theme", "Opening Title Music", and "Drum Messages Death Of King". CD

Sonny ClarkSonny Clark Quintets ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1957. Used ... $9.99
This one will confuse the discographers out there – but it's great Blue Note material by this legendary hardbop pianist! The CD reissues a previous Japanese-only set of unreleased material – called Sonny Clark Quintets – but some of the tracks have since come out on other CDs. 2 tracks – "Royal Flush" and "Lover" – feature Clark with a group that includes Art Farmer and Jackie McLean, recorded in 1957. The other 3 tracks – "Minor Meeting", "Eastern Incident", and "Little Sonny" – are from a 1958 session that was cut with Clifford Jordan and Kenny Burrell. Both sets of tracks are great – and although Clark recorded some of these tunes in other versions, the quality on this CD's still extremely high, and is proof that Clark was one of Blue Note's greatest players, worthy of all the extra sessions that were cut in the old days! A deep soul treasure! You've probably never heard of the team of Eddie & Ernie, but they've risen to fame over the years with collectors of rare 60s soul – and have recently been immortalized on volumes of Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures, one of the most important soul compilation series to come out in the past decade or so! In fact, Eddie & Ernie's tracks on the set have drawn such interest over the years that Dave's finally pulled together 24 of the pair's rare tracks from the 60s – sublime soul duets recorded for labels that include Columbia, Eastern, Chess, Artco, and Revue – a brilliant blend of deep and sweet soul that makes us wonder why these guys were never bigger than they were. Think of the set as the same as finding a stash of some of the best 60s soul singles you could hope to hear, and get ready for a great discovery that will have you coming back to the CD again and again! Fairport ConventionFairport Convention (A&M) (aka What We Did On Our Holidays) ... LP
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A pivotal album from Fairport Convention – a set that has the group really reaching out for some new ideas and styles in their music! Sandy Denny is firmly in place here – taking the lead on most numbers – but Ian Matthews is also still in the group, bringing in that bit of west coast style that we loved from the first record – and which keeps the overall feel here more 60s than ancient, especially given the upped electrics on a few numbers. Ashley Hutchings' bass is brilliant – almost more this subtle, sonic force at the bottom than an instrument on its own – yet also still away from the more modal elements to come on the next few records. And although there's less traditional tunes on here than later, the group themselves are already becoming timeless – and unlike anything that had ever come before. Titles include "Fotheringay", "Mr Lacey", "Book Song", "I'll Keep It With Mine", "End Of A Holiday", "She Moves Through The Fair", and "Eastern Rain". LP, Vinyl record album

The set's filled with all the kind of cool sounds you'd expect – and is almost a throwback to the great run of jazz-meets Eastern-meets funk albums on Impulse, Verve, and Skye Records at the end of the 60s – as Haque's guitar comes into contact with sitar, Hammond, Fender Rhodes, tabla, and other groovy touches – in the kind of tracks that would have made Gabor Szabo and Gary McFarland plenty darn happy! The funky fusion classic from guitarist Volker Krieger – finally issued in a great CD edition! Easily one of Krieger's best albums, Spectrum was remarkably cut in just two days at MPS Studios in 1971 – with a group that includes Peter Baumeister on drums, Cees See on bongos and percussion, Peter Trunk on bass and cello, and John Taylor on Hohner electric piano. It kicks of with the amazing track "Zoom", a seriously funky maelstrom of groovy funky guitar and percussion that mixes in washes of sitar and Eastern effects here and there for a really trippy effect! The album doesn't try to duplicate the frenzy whipped up by the opener right away, and finds a much more relaxed groove in tracks like "So Long, For Now", "More About D", "Ach Kina", and "Instant Judgement" before flailing away in the exciting closer "Strings Revisited". Volker KriegelWith A Little Help From My Friends ... LP
Liberty/Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. Sealed ... $14.99 19.99
A great and groovy early album from Volker Kriegel – the German guitarist who'd cut some very trippy work for the MPS label in the 70s – but a player who steps out here in a sweet soul jazz mode at the end of the 60s! Volker's still got the same wickedly sharp style on guitar you'd know from his later fame – but here, it's turned towards the kind of soulful guitar work you'd hear on Verve Records at the time – somewhere in the territory of George Benson, or maybe a bit in that of Wes Montgomery – but also with some occasional freewheeling moments that hint at the changes to come! The group's a trio on side one – with Peter Trunk on bass and Cees See on drums – but side two moves into wilder material with a quartet that features vibes by Claudio Szenkar, who adds in just the kind of psychedelic touches to really make the music open up! These cuts are much more modal, and show Kriegel's growing love of Eastern sounds – and titles include "Na Na Imboro", "Morandi", "Interpunctuation", "Traffic Jam", and "With A Little Help From My Friends". Possibly the greatest album ever from the enigmatic Lloyd Miller – his legendary Oriental Jazz album from the late 60s, and a really wonderful blend of musical modes! Some of the tracks here really stretch out in the Eastern promise of the title – mixing jazz rhythms with santur, oud, zarb, and other unusual instrumentation – all in ways that are modal one minute, meditative the next, and which even echo gamelan styles on one tune! Other tracks are a bit straighter in the instrumentation, but still sparkle with a globe's worth of influence – Lloyd on piano, carving out sounds in a very unusual way! Some tracks are by Miller's trio, other by a quartet that features him, but which is led by pianist/trombonist Press Keys. Titles include "Hue Wail", "Pentalogic", "Tanya", "Natanie", "Guzel Gozler", "Prelude In The Iranian Mode Shur", "Impression Of Bhairava Raga", and "Njonja Mirah & Yona". High Note, 2017. Used ... $12.99
Steve Nelson's been one of the hippest talents on vibes for many years now – and an album like this is a great reminder of why we love his music so much! Nelson's never content to just echo the sound of previous masters of his instrument – and instead, like a rare few, he finds a way to integrate the instrument into a familiar jazz combo, but all without ever making the vibes stand in second place – really soaring out and ringing forth with a commanding power that really leaves us breathless! Here, Nelson's in some very well-matched, deeply soulful company – a killer quartet with Danny Grissett on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – superb rhythm players whose own fires rise and burn with the energy of the leader. The ballads on the record are as great as the burners – and it's the burners we love most of all – on titles that include "Eastern Joy Dance", "Soul-Leo", "Grew's Tune", "Samba D'Blue", "New Wheels", "Brothers Under The Sun", and "Melody For Mulgrew". Amazing grooves from the legendary Dave Pike – one of the American vibists' few albums for the MPS label – and quite possibly the trippiest of the bunch! The set's a beautiful illustration of the freedoms that the MPS label offered American players like Pike – a chance to really open up and do his thing, and find new sides and styles he'd never expressed before on his records back home! Of course, part of the strength of the set is the group he's working with here – an ensemble that includes the amazing Volker Kreigel on guitar (and sitar!), plus JA Rettenbacher on bass and Peter Baumeister on drums. But, lest you think this is a standard quartet affair, let it be known that all players – including Pike – handle a very wide variety of instruments throughout the session – including bongos, toys, maracas, other percussion, and more – even a bit of vocalizations as well! Tracks often have a slow-building, slightly-trippy feel that's totally great – and Kreigel's work on guitar is a perfect pairing with Pike's vibes – especially as both players are clearly digging an Eastern influence for the set. Titles include "Suspicious Child", "Soul Eggs", "Raga Jeeva Swara", "Rabbi Mogen's Hideout", "Attack Of The Green Misers", "Infra Red", and "Send Me The Yellow Guys". CD

Cedar's group on the set is in a very Eastern Rebellion mode – with Bob Berg on tenor, Billy Higgins on drums, and David Williams on bass – and Abbey joins the group on four of the album's eight tracks – the best of which are original numbers that feature a freshly inventive vocal style that really makes the album something special. Abbey sings some great lyrics to her originals "Castles" and "Not In Love" – as well as Cedar's excellent "The Maestro", a tune dedicated to the late Ellington. Yet during the postwar years, LA had just as much going on as those eastern cities – a huge new population influx, who'd move over from the south during the wartime years – and new labels that had cropped up to capture their sounds and serve their audience! 50s LA was already humming with R&B material, which gave the rising styles of soul plenty of places to get recorded – so much so, that there's even some work on this set that was never issued at the time! The vibe is great – similar to other Birth Of Soul sets from Ace/Kent – in that the music carries a bit of R&B and blues bite from earlier years, mixed with more romping and tighter soul styles – in a smoking set list of 24 tracks that include "But What About My Broken Heart" by Don Wyatt, "Everybody's Got A Lover But Me" by Richard Berry, "Have You Heard" by The Vows, "With These Hands" by The Wonders, "You Better Watch Out Girl" by The Imperialites, "Lose My Cool" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Let Him Walk Away" by Darlene Love, "My Pillow" by The Numbers, "Help Me With My Broken Heart" by Sylvester Stewart, "That Other Guy" by The Mandarins, "Don't Drop It" by The Question Marks, and "Young Lover" by Wilks & Wilkerson. Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $37.99 41.99
Gilles Peterson takes on the mighty jazz catalog of Timeless Records – and creates the same magic with their tracks that he's done in the past with other labels like Impulse Records and MPS! The Peterson ear for a gem is very present here – and the set does a great job of digging both well-remembered sets from the label and some overlooked nuggets – the latter of which really make the set worthwhile, as they represent some Timeless cuts that are getting very hard to track down on wax in recent years! There's a strong mix of soulful straight jazz, modal grooves, and more spiritual numbers – on titles that include "Why" by Carter Jefferson, "Articulation" by Rodney Jones, "Haiti B" by Joanne Brackeen, "World Peace" by Timeless All Stars, "Zen Turtles" by Brian Melvin with Jaco Pastorius, "Bolivia" by Eastern Rebellion, "Gibraltar (alt take)" by Kirk Lightsey with Freddie Hubbard, "La Carnival" by Eddie Harris, "No Me Esqueca" by Tom Grant, "In Case You Missed It" by Art Blakey, and "Moonchild" by Pharoah Sanders. A really wonderful album that's sometimes overlooked because of it's relatively oblique cover and name – which both hide the wonderful talents within! In truth, the set might be billed as a Cedar Walton session – or maybe almost an Eastern Rebellion one – as the vibe here is very similar to that later group, with a strong tenorist working alongside Walton's trio, plus a bit of extra Latin percussion. Clifford Jordan delivers wonderful tenor throughout – and the core sound of Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums is as great as on any of that group's other wonderful albums of the time. Add in Ray Mantilla – who throws in some congas to complicate the grooves a all the best moments – and you've got some mighty nice icing on the cake! Really unique recordings from the Sun Ra Arkestra – material recorded in Egypt in 1983 – juxtaposed with sessions from percussionist Salah Ragab and the Cairo Jazz Band! The work here has much more of a "jazz meets world" sound than some of Ra's other recordings – and most tracks are extremely melodic and rhythmic – in a way that mixes Eastern instrumentation and themes with some of the more familiar Arkestra modes – a sound that takes the Sun Ra groove one step further, and which sounds totally sublime! Highlights include the groover "Egypt Strut", the flute-heavy "Oriental Mood", and beautiful "Dawn". Really great stuff – and a key glimpse at this rare slice of Ra's career! CD

One of the greatest albums we've heard from Jane Birkin in years – a haunting set that revisits older classics, with a whole new sound! Jane's working here with titles written by longtime partner Serge Gainsbourg – classics like "Valse De Melody", "Elisa", "Couleur Cafe", "La Javanaise", and "Les Dessous Chics". But instead of just re-recording them, she's re-pitched all the titles to have a very strong Middle Eastern feel – working with Arabic musicians to take the original tracks by Serge, and flesh them out with an even more haunting and otherworldly feel. Really great stuff – and proof that Jane's still growing tremendously as an artist! CD

Funky Turkish rock from the enigmatic Ersen – an artist we'd rank right up there with Erkin Koray and Selda for choppy grooves and offbeat music! Like both of those artists, Ersen works in that vein of Turkish rock known as Arabesk or Andalou pop – a very cool blend of Western psychedelic influences and more regional Eastern sounds – all woven together here with some totally great rhythms that are very much in the best rock-break mode! The guitars alone are worth the price of admission – often blending the electric and folkloric – and the music has great appeal to anyone digging tripped-out funky rock of the Cherrystones or Finders Keepers variety. This album is Ersen's first – and titles include "Yeden Beni", "Kara Yazi", "Dostlar Beni Hatirlasin", "Garip Gonlum", "Uc Kiz Bir Ana", and "Done Sevdigim". LP, Vinyl record album

Island (UK), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal album from Fairport Convention – hardly the "holiday" you might expect from the title, and instead a set that has the group really reaching out for some new ideas and styles in their music! Tremendous early work from German saxophonist Joki Freund – a player who would go onto much greater fame in the progressive years at the end of the 60s, but who already sounds plenty darn great on this early combo side from 1963! The style of the work is incredibly hip – with a definite John Coltrane modal groove in place, but also a sense of globally conscious jazz that's very much in the spirit of classic Saba/MPS work, but which predates most of that by a number of years! Freund plays tenor and soprano sax here – in a sextet with Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Emil Mangelsdorff on flute and alto, Eberhard Weber on bass, Karl Theodor Geier on bass, and Peter Baumeister on drums – and the record is overflowing with great tunes that more than live up to the compelling title and cover image! A massive bit of funky fusion from the 70s – an album that was crucially overlooked at the time, but which has gone onto become a crate-diggers classic over the years! The group's fronted by Polish jazz legends Michal Urbaniak and Urszula Dudziak – but it also features a fair bit of American players too – all working together in a blend of the best funky fusion modes going down in both the US and Eastern Europe in the mid 70s! Drums on the set are totally great – played by Steve Gadd or Gerald Brown, depending on the track – and some tracks have weird vocal bits that riff around the instrumentation, sung either by Urszula, Bernard Kafka, or some other backing singers. The keyboards are great – quite tripped-out at times, but never too over the top – and overall, the album's a fair bit more soulful and funky than most of Urbaniak's other work of the 70s. Titles include the killer sample track "Rien Ne Va Plus" – used famously by the Beastie Boys many years back – plus "After The World Goes Home", "Funk It", "Sinkin Low", "Next Please", "Horsing Around", and "Watusi Dance". The composer was easily one of the most inventive on the Eastern European scene – and even in a mainstream movie like this, he not only brings to play this amazing understanding of the possibilities of conventional instruments, but also created a heck of a lot more music than was actually used in the film – which means that the 22 track LP features almost double the amount of never-heard music than the director put up on screen – most of which is even more amazing than the music on the original soundtrack! Fortunately, the vaults have yielded some gems like this over the years – unreleased live material that not only adds to the space in Woody's catalog, but also really shows us how special he could be in a live setting! Shaw's got this strength of imagination and inner spirituality that never falters at all, even when the tracks are stretching out nice and long – which they really do here, as almost all the numbers move way past the ten minute mark – and have Woody blowing magnificent solos throughout. The group is great, too, with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Tony Reedus on drums, and Stafford James on some especially crucial bass – an instrument that always seems to drive Shaw onto new heights when it's handled the right way, which it definitely is here. Heavy funk from 70s Turkey – proof that the world of the groove knew no boundaries at the time! The tunes here are all pretty heavily influenced by American funk and jazz of the period – awash in heavy beats, tight riffing, and wicked instrumentation that's often produced with a nice gritty edge that really matches the intensity of some of the best funky 45s! But the work also features a fair bit of Eastern influences as well – either in use of specific instruments, sounds, and phrasing – or the occasional Turkish vocals which really help freshen the groove. Side one is all funk – and very dirty, nasty, and with beats a lot heavier than you'd expect – and side two is jazz, but not your usual Anglo jazz from the time – and more in the world/jazz crossover style explored by labels like MPS! The whole thing's totally great – a record you'll proudly stack next to your best Mulatu albums, but which will take you even further! Once again, Cannonball Adderley proves the old jazz adage – it's not the song, but the singer – as he breathes fantastic new life here into a set of tunes from the musical Fiddler on the Roof! Yet in thinking of the music, there's also a special sort of genius – as there's some exotic currents in most of the melodies, which may be why the young producer David Axelrod chose the tracks for the set – as they've got the same blend of hardbop and exotic elements that you'll hear on some of the original tunes by this group. The lineup is great – Nat Adderley on cornet, Charles Lloyd on reeds, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and the tones of Cannon and Lloyd are great together – and the make the best songs sound like strange Eastern-tinged jazz numbers. The main title is an incredible blend of Eastern percussion and moody jazz – and other cuts bring in some trippier elements, mixed with funkier bits and warmer moments – all at a level that have Budd even outdoing the best late 60s work by Lalo Schifrin! The keyboards are often at the forefront – either acoustic or electric – and the album's got so many groovy grooves, with such variety, it's got a feel that's much richer than the usual soundtrack set. An unusual British jazz group gets even more unusual – with a sound that's even more mindblowing than some of their better-known records! The combo's headed by pianist John Mayer, who cut two fantastic Indo Jazz Fusions with reedman Joe Harriott in the late 60s – working here on an unreleased studio session from a few years later – with stunning guest work on harmonica from the great Larry Adler! At the core are the familiar Indo Jazz Fusions sounds – reeds from Stan Sulzmann on alto and flute, plus sitar from Clem Alford, guitar from Jim Moyes, bass from Jeff Clyne, drums from John Marshall, and tablas from Krishav Sathe – players who continue that jazz-meets-Indian spirit at the start of the set – then step back slightly on the Eastern tip from track two onwards – as Adler comes in with these amazingly eerie harmonica lines – a very strange but compelling blend with the energy of the rest of the group, and quite different than any of Larry's better-known recordings from earlier years. Once things get going, the mix of harmonica and Indian modes really steps up – a really cool mix, with lots of modal energy – on titles that include "Raga Malika", "Serenade", "Raga Megha", "Summertime", and "Sarabande". Brilliant modern jazz from German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – recording here in 1964, but sounding years ahead of his time, with an amazing a blend of jazz and Asian styles! One of the hippest albums ever from Chicago reedman/trumpeter Ira Sullivan – a set that takes on a really different feel than his previous bop-styled records – and which shows a whole new side of the musician! Ira's clearly inspired here by the changes in jazz in the 60s – particularly the work of John Coltrane – and he reaches forward in a wonderfully expressive way that's filled with joy, life, and a spiritual sensibility we never heard this strongly again in Sullivan's music. There's a definite modal jazz vibe to most of the record – played beautifully by an obscure rhythm section that features Dolphe Castellano on piano and electric harpsichord, William Fry on bass, and Jose Cigno on drums – players with a wonderfully refreshing conception that really makes the album sparkle. ✨✧ VariousPsych Funk Ala Turkish Vol 2 ... LP
Turk A Disk (Italy), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The follow-up to one of our favorite Turkish funk compilations of recent years – and it's just as great! Volume 2 focuses on the fertile mid 70s period for the most part – and it got tunes that carry the buzzing strings and raw rhythms of the psych era pretty well into the next decade – along with funk, R&B and even brings in a bit of disco – without burying the Eastern vibe one bit! Turkish strings, percussion and vocals mixed with western funk and psych – on some very well produced tunes with a sweeping sound! Includes "Ates Bacayi Sarmis" by Rana & Selcuk, "Iyiler Kotuye Duser" by Semiriamis, "Tatlim" by Hayko, "Nem Kaldi" by Seyhan Karabay Kardaslar, "Tatki Tatli" by Nil Burak, "Mamabadi Koprusu" by Selcuk Alagoz, "Hey Gidi Dunya Hey" by Ali Kocatepe, "500 Altine Hairye Esom" by Serter Bagcan and more. ✨✧ VariousSpiritual Jazz Vol 14 – Private ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the deepest-digging entries in this wonderful series – a set that explores the wealth of spiritual jazz issued on small indie labels in the 70s – material that's sometimes referred to as "private", although that's really just a factor of how little circulation these records saw back in the day! As is well-known, the 60s influence of John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy set countless fires on players in the generation that followed – including some older musicians who really changed up their groove in the post-Coltrane energy, and recorded material that was full of searing solos, modal rhythms, and a new sort of spiritual vibe! The set features plenty of nuggets from that time – including some very rare 45s – and even includes one or two earlier tracks, which makes for a great span of sounds within. As always with Jazzman, the detailed notes are as great as the track selection – and titles include "By The Grace Of God" by Erni Clark, "Ethiopia" by Carmelo Garcia, "Desiree Song" by Bobby Jackson, "Pharoah's Thing" by Compass, "Symbiosis" by Almanac, "A'Keem" by Cullen Knight, "Themes & Variations" by Black Is, "Middle Eastern Fantasy" by Radam Schwartz & Leslie Ford, "Spanish Boots (parts 1 & 2)" by Don Menza, and "Delilah" by Andrew McPherson. Ostinato (UK), 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Rare grooves from the final decade of the Soviet Union – a set of work from the Central Asian provinces, presented here in a very cool mis-mash of Mid-Eastern modes and more 80s based instrumentation! The keyboards on the cover are here in full effect, and there's definitely plenty of sounds from the digital generation – but, maybe given the lag time of getting western culture to the Soviet scene, there's also some surprising late 70s vibes on some tracks too – kind of a blend of disco and electro that's mighty cool! And yes, you won't be able to understand the lyrics, but there's plenty of great notes to illuminate the sounds – and the instrumental elements here speak volumes – on titles that include "Sen Qaidan Bilasan" by Original, "Tantsuyushchi" by Angelina Petrosova, "Meyhane" by Efsane, "Ya Zdala TEbya" by Makhifirat Khamrakulova, "Aarezoo Gom Kardam" by Nasiba Abdullaeva, "Paidot Karam" by Khurmo Shirinova, "Lola" by Bolalar, and "Guzal" by Ismail Jalilov. ✨✧ George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

Wounded Bird, 1967. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Excellent pre-Columbia work from trumpeter Don Ellis – a live date recorded with Tom Scott on saxes and Dave Mackay on piano – presented here in its entirety for the first time ever! The groove here is every bit as hard as on Ellis' funky classics for Columbia – but more acoustic overall, and bottomed with some great Latin percussion from Alan Estes on timbales and Chino Valdes on congas. Many tracks have a slightly exotic feel – a mode that uses conventional jazz instrumentation with slightly Eastern phrasing, in a way that sounds really great alongside the modal rhythms of the tunes. Titles include Scott's "With Respect To Coltrane" and "Blues For Hari" – plus "Slippin N Slidin", "Bali Dancer", "Sadness Shouldn't Go To Sleep", "It's A Snap", "The Squeeze", and "Turk's Works". CD

✨✧ Joki FreundYogi Jazz ... CD
CBS/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Lots of "Eastern" styled numbers – and titles include "Aisha", "Carribean Ringo", "Yogiana", "HL 20", and "Killer Joe". CD

Very trippy-dippy psychedelic work – written for the soundtrack to Timothy Leary's weird LSD film of the late 60s! Maryvonne Giercarz composed the music, and plays it with a small group that includes her on "Veena", an "ancient Indian instrument", along with guitar and tabla – making for lots of cool "eastern" styled tunes! The tracks are very wild – and are as beautifully trippy as you might expect for the setting! The whole thing's great – and the score also features some great recitations by Leary, worth the price of admission alone! Includes the tracks "Freak Out", "Root Chakra", "All Girls Are Yours", "The Turn On", and "The Beginning Of The Voyage". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jim HelmsKung Fu ... LP
Warner, 1973. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Not as much of an all-out funk party as some other kung fu soundtracks of the 70s – but a really great record that's filled with plenty of great spoken bits too! The album's the soundtrack to the Kung Fu TV show, which starred David Carradine – and it's mostly made up of "Eastern" sounding cuts that have a moody soundtrack feel, done in a traditional orchestral mode – spare, brooding numbers that almost feel like they're pulled from 60s Italian westerns and peplum films, but with some exotic twists and turns too! But almost best of all are the spoken bits – dialogue from the show with hokey takes on Eastern philosophy – completely charming from today's perspective, and a great counterpart to the music. Titles include "Sign Of The Dragon", "Dark Angel", "Time Of The Soul", "An Eye For An Eye", "Caine's Theme", "The Ancient Warrior", and of course, "Grasshopper"! LP, Vinyl record album

A sublime album from The Insect Trust – a really unique group who blend folk rock, jazz, and some nice trippy Eastern overtones! The style's really a great product of the time – a cross-cultural late 60s session recorded with a freedom from labels and categories – featuring instrumentation that includes bottleneck guitar, soprano recorder, kalimba, banjo, and a rich array of percussion – all in support of lead vocals from the lovely Nancy Jefferies. The sound is wonderful – experimental, but always tuneful – and titles include "The Skin Game", "Special Rider Blues", "Miss Fun City", "Declaration Of Independence", "Mountain Song", and "Going Home". ✨✧ Steven IsoardiDark Tree – Jazz & The Community Arts In Los Angeles (revised edition) ... Book
Duke University Press, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the amazing underground jazz scene in LA – the richly creative spiritual and avant underground that flourished strongly in the 60s, 70s, and 80s! Although the city's best known for its cool jazz of the 50s, there's an even greater amount of left-field jazz that's come from LA – work that rivals eastern scenes like the AACM in Chicago or loft jazz world in 70s New York – but even more righteous and spiritual overall! The book does a great job of laying the groundwork for this scene to emerge – and offers an incredible amount of detail on its evolution – with an especially focused look at Horace Tapscott and his Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, as well as some of the artists who recorded for Nimbus Records. Plus, this updated edition does a wonderful job of showing the continuing legacy of the music well into the 21st century – and also includes an appendix by Roberto Miranda, for a larger volume running well over 420 pages! Not just a flute session from Yusef Lateef – as the set's a record with plenty of saxophone as well as the instrument named in the title! Yusef's mixing his bag nicely for this mid 60s classic – working through tunes that are a mixture of soulful hardbop and eastern exoticism – a shift that's marked by Lateef's changing reed work on tenor, flute, and oboe! The group's a hip quartet with players from Lateef's Detroit scene – the always-great Hugh Lawson on piano, plus Herman Wright on bass, and a young Roy Brooks on drums – all working with Lateef in a sound that almost points the way towards some of the innovations in 70s soul jazz, and which has surprisingly righteous touches that you wouldn't expect from such a simple package! A record that's every bit as beautiful and striking as its cover – a cool collection of all the wonderful guitar-driven grooves that guitarist Gabor Szabo created for Impulse Records in the 60s! Szabo first rose to fame working with Chico Hamilton – but soon established himself as one of the most unique 60s voices on his instrument – a newly-arrived player on the American scene with ties to other European styles as well – but with a very open ear for modal jazz, bossa nova, and some of the other great styles that were bubbling under at the time. There's occasional nods to Eastern modes, mixed with mod 60s styles, and the production often echoes out with approaches that further underscore Gabor's unique touch on the strings. Sweet jazzy grooves from a variety of global points in the late 70s/early 80s scene – music that's often much cooler and more interesting than mainstream fusion or jazz funk of the time! The set features work by artists who've dug the 70s experiments on CTI Records, but soon move into territory that's all their own – sometimes bringing in more regional instrumentation, or inflections from an earlier non-fusion world of expression – which includes some great Latin, Brazilian, and Eastern European elements throughout the set! Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". GAD (Poland), 1964. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest modern jazz musicians on the European scene of the 60s – heard here at a moment when his talent was really beginning to burst forth! Pianist Krzystof Komeda is maybe known best to folks on our shore for his soundtrack material – but back in Eastern Europe, he was one of the most groundbreaking modernists of the early 60s – arguably even more exciting than so many other talents in the west at the time – as both his playing and overall conception were completely unique – really inventive in terms of his approach to timing and space, and carried off here by an incredible quintet that features Tomasz Stanko on trumpet, Michal Urbaniak on soprano sax, Jacek Ostaszewski on bass, and Czeslaw Bartowski on drums – completely unified here in the leader's vision. The set features two different performances in Prague in 1964 – and this isn't just "live" material that's kind of an add-on to Komeda's famous studio recordings – but instead, maybe like Charles Mingus, the kind of performance that maybe illuminates his genius even more than those sets – completely essential, with titles that include "Roman Two", "Repetition", "Second Ballet Etude", "Sophia's Tune", "Svanteti", and "Alea". One of the greatest albums ever from trumpeter Dusko Goykovich – a session that follows strongly in his Swinging Macedonia session from a decade before – and which, like that one, mixes up jazz with a range of Eastern European influences! The tracks are all originals by Goykovich, played by a quintet that's heavy on modal rhythms and warmly rolling grooves – a style that would be right at home on the MPS label, but which has gotten very little exposure over the years, thanks to the rarity of this Italian-only release! Dusko plays trumpet, and other instrumentation includes tenor and soprano sax by Ben Thompson, piano by Vince Benedetti, bass by Joe Nay, and drums by Andy Scherrer. The whole thing's a work of incredible depth and beauty, and is definitely one of the records to seek out if you've heard Goykovich's name over the years, but haven't yet latched onto his genius! The set is a super-hip concert performance recorded at the US Embassy in Turkey, featuring a band of eastern-flavored players that includes Okay Temiz on percussion, Selcuk Sun on bass, and Irfan Sumer on tenor. Tracks are shorter and a bit tighter than some of Cherry's other work from the early 70s – but they also have a strong amount of world influences, and the record is perhaps one of his greatest achievements at cross-breeding musical cultures. New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD
