✨✧ Medeski, Martin & WoodIt's A Jungle In Here ... CD
Ryko/Gramavision, 1993. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The first album by this enigmatic jazz funk trio from New York. Medeski's funky keyboards are firmly in place, and the group's got the usual tight rhythm groove, but the lineup's also expanded with some additional horn players, and some guest guitar by Mark Ribot. The album includes a great version of Coltrane's "Syeeda's Song Flute", plus originals like "Worms", "Sand", "Where's Sly?", and "Wiggly's Way". CD

Terry RileyCadenza On The Night Plain & Other String Quartets ... LP
Gramavision, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99
A unique record for Riley, where he collaborates with and writes expressly for the Kronos Quartet, composing several string quartets with his signature minimalist approach incorporating jazz and exotic melodies and large improvised passages. The first album is made up of 3 shorter pieces "Sunrise Of The Planetary Dream Collector", "G Song" and "Mythic Birds Waltz", while "Cadenza On The Night Plain" encompasses both sides of record 2, and goes through quite a few different movements, including "Where Was Wisdom When We Went West?", "March Of The Old Timers Reefer Division", "Tuning To Rolling Thunder", "The Night Cry Of Black Buffalo Woman", "Gathering Of The Spiral Clan" and "Captain Jack Has The Last Word". John ScofieldBlue Matter ... CD
Gramavision/Warner (Japan), 1986. Used ... $12.99
Warmly chromatic work from guitarist John Scofield – full of tones and textures that shift and shimmer about a soulful center – always as chromatic as you might guess from the album's cover and title! There's certain 80s elements in the instrumentation – especially the use of more electric bits, as was common for the Gramavision label at the time – but Scofield finds a way to keep things interesting by drawing on the deeper roots of his previous work for his solos. Titles include "The Nag", "Time Marches On", "Now She's Blonde", "Make Me", and "So You Say". CD

Bernie WorrellFunk Of Ages ... CD
Gramavision/Warner (Japan), 1990. Used ... $24.99
Maybe not the funk of ages, but a mighty nice solo set from Bernie Worrell – done at a key stretch when he was working away from George Clinton and the P-Funk universe! The set's got Bernie opening up in a blend of jazz and funk – and some tracks feature lead vocals, in a style that takes off from his earlier solo album on Arista, but tuned here with a bit more of that electro vibe that the Gramavision album was doing so well at the time! Bernie handles much of the music himself, but there's plenty of key guests on the record too – rhythms from Sly & Robbie, more keyboards from Herbie Hancock, guitar from Keith Richards and Vernon Reid, and seven some backing vocals from David Byrne and other old associates from the P-Funk years. Titles include "Straight Ahead", "Sing", "Don't Piss Me Off", "Ain't She Sweet", "V Spy", "BW Jam", "Volunteered Slavery/Bern's Blues/Outerspaceways", and "Beware Of Dog". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

Ryko/Gramavision, 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
More great grooves by this incredible band with a real talent for mixing jazz funk organ with a much freer sensibility – hitting a range of influences that run the gamut from Jimmy Smith to Larry Young, and blending them into something all their own. Titles include "Spy Kiss", "Night Marchers", "Kenny", "Lifeblood", "Henduck", "Think", and "Dracula". CD

One of John Carter's great 80s dates for Gramavision – and one that really recaptures some old school energy, thanks to the presence of Bobby Bradford's cornet in the group! Other players include Benny Powell on trombone, Marty Ehrlich on bass clarinet and flute, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Karsten VogelThis Is It ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Karsten Vogel steps out here as more of a multi-instrumentalist than we might have guessed – still playing tenor, alto, and soprano sax on much of the record – but also adding in some keyboards, violin, and rhythm programs too! In fact, it's those programs that shape the sound more than we might have expected – creating this electric/acoustic balance that makes the whole thing sound like some of the more inventive fusion efforts of the 80s – like the better material issued by Gramavision Records, with a similar strong voice in the lead – and a mix of acoustic elements throughout. Vogel wrote, arranged, and produced – and titles include "Kyoto", "Montmartre", "Air Air", "Ouleeka", "No Time", "Lily & The Bird", and "Second Of May". CD
