Astro, Early 70s. Very Good ... $299.99
A solid salsa session, featuring the alto work of Danny Gonzalez, plus vocals by Junior Diaz and Papo Lebron. There's some great instrumentation on the album – snaking along in a mode that's clearly copped from the Latin soul crowd, but done here in a mode that's straighter Latin. Titles include "Sombrero", "Maldad", "Guardia", "El Vago", "La Pescadora", and "Tremenda Bronca". LP, Vinyl record album

GonzalezGonzalez ... CD
Soul Brother/Expansion (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
Sweet funky jazz from the 70s! Gonzalez were an obscure UK combo – probably known a lot better over in England, but pretty darn hard to find over here in America – and they've got a tight style that reminds us of some of the more well-produced jazz funk coming out on labels like Blue Note or Blue Thumb during the mid 70s. Some cuts have vocals, but most of the record's instrumental – and it's filled with great guitars, and some excellent sax work that goes way past the usual funky tenor line! The groove's a nicely sophisticated blend of jazz funk and modern soul – with the kind of groove that you might expect to hear on some of the Capitol Rare compilations. The CD brings together cuts from the group's first album Gonzalez, plus a few more from the album Our Only Weapon Is Our Music. Titles include "Pack It Up", "Funky Frith Street", "Saoco", "Ahwai Five-O", "Rissoled", and "Adelanto Nightride". Very nice – and the kind of group we love to discover! CD

GonzalezMove It To The Music ... LP
Capitol, 1979. Sealed ... $6.99
A lot more clubby than the group's earlier funk albums – fast, uptempo, and clearly headed for the dancefloors, where the record actually scored a bit. The band's jazzy playing is still in place, but it's kind of hidden behind disco and pop arrangements, and by the lead vocals by Linda Taylor and Alan Marshall. Titles include "Dance Machine", "Move It To The Music", "Peoples Party", and "Take Me The Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray BarrettoBarretto Power (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fania/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A great Ray Barretto album from 1972 – one that beautifully showcases the master percussionist as he effortlessly shifts between Latin soul and 70's salsa styles! The group's nice and lean – with Adalberto Santiago on vocals, Papy Roman on trumpet, Louis Cruz on piano, and the great Andy Gonzalez on bass – a heck of a player whose solid rhythmic pulse was a big part of so many great albums of the time. Two great tracks make the album totally worth owning – "Right On" and "Power", both of are funky Latin soul numbers that are right out of Ray's Hard Hands period! Other tracks are equally great salsa numbers – and titles include "Y Dicen", "Perla Del Sur", and "Oye La Noticia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kirk Lightsey with Freddie HubbardTemptation ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... $16.99
A very hip group, and a wonderful meeting between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Kirk Lightsey! We always like Kirk, but love him even more when he's working with a horn player – as his sound seems to catch fire, and move with even bolder notes than usual – which is definitely the case on the album's opener, a nice take on Hubbard's classic "Gibraltar" – in a spirit that continues strongly throughout! Bass is from Santi Debriano, drums are from Eddie Gladden, and Jerry Gonzalez plays percussion on one track – and Freddie's in that great 80s sound of his – a mode that's a return to the straighter hardbop of his Blue Note years, but with the phrasing learned during his 70s funk years – on titles that include "Gibraltar", "Evidence", "Brigitte", "Temptation", and "Society Red". Ray MantillaRebirth ... CD
Savant, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Ray Mantilla is reborn, after a health crisis almost took him down – but to us, he's also returning to his roots – that rock-solid approach to Latin jazz that's made us love his records so much over the decades! And like the best of those sets, there's a mixture of complex ideas and organic execution going on here – sounds that really push past the obvious, and showcase Ray's sublime understanding of color and tone as much as rhythm – but which feel almost effortless in the hands of Mantilla and his group! Players include Ivan Renta on soprano and tenor, Jorge Castro on bartione and flute, Guido Gonzalez on trumpet, Mike Freeman on vibes, and Edy Martinez on piano and Fender Rhodes – all shimmering nicely on tunes that include "Mia", "Philly Mambo", "Cumbia Jazz Fusion Experimental", "Rebirth Bata Rumba Experimental", "Martinez", "Yuyo", and "Preciosa". Orchestra HarlowSalsa ... LP
Fania, 1974. Sealed ... $34.99
Orchestra Harlow were already at the top of their game by the time of this classic early 70s album – yet they also managed to leap forward strongly too – both embracing and lending a name to the growing salsa movement of the time! The streetwise sounds that Harlow created in the 60s were a key force in taking older Latin styles and giving them a new sort of youthful pride and energy – to a point where Larry also feels more than comfortable to reach back and grab some older sounds as well, blending them in a really compelling mix of roots and new ideas! A key element of the old school is the album's use of tres by Harry Vigiano – who rings out with a Cuban current on his instrument, while the rest of the group hits some warmer New York and Puerto Rican tones. Larry's piano holds the whole thing together strongly – and Yayo El Indio and Adalberto Santiago join Junior Gonzalez on vocals on many tracks, making for a fuller, festive sound that really earns the "salsa" in the title. Titles include "Wampo", "No Hay Amigo", "Popo Pa'Mi", "Silencio", and "Sueltame". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Lee WilsonWithout A Song ... LP
Inner City, 1969. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A rare early gem from Joe Lee Wilson – the singer who's probably best known to the world for his performances on Archie Shepp's late Impulse recordings. The vibe here is similar to his work on Shepp's albums of the time – but it's also mixed with a hip and mellow approach that has Joe working through tracks that provide a strong link between the earlier styles of singers like Babs Gonzalez and Eddie Jefferson, and the early 70s hipness of Andy Bey and Leon Thomas. Really great all the way through – and tracks include Joe's classic "Return Of The Prodigal Son", a nice track with an Andy Bey groove to it, plus "Hey Look At You", "Feeling Good", and "Soul Lady". ✨✧ VariousEnglish Weather ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
One of the coolest compilations we've ever heard from Ace Records – a really special set that follows in the tradition of their other St Etienne cafe/pub collections – and like those gems, a very different package than usual! This time around, the duo of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (who you'll also know from the Croydon International label) focus on an overlooked strand of British sounds at the start of the 70s – music that's moody, often jazzy, and almost always touched with a hint of blue – a kind of melancholic moment after the heady 60s – one that takes into stock all the great changes that had happened in the music, but delivers them in this laidback style that's completely unselfconscious. This isn't singer/songwriter material, and it's not progressive either – although it carries light traces of some of the best of those scenes – and if we had to try to dig for a tag for these tracks at all, we might use the term "folk funk" that was bandied about years ago – for cuts that have a vibe that's complex yet personal, and lots of jazziness in the phrasing. Titles include "Last Cloud Home" by The Orange Bicycle, "Love Song With Flute" by Caravan, "Moon Bird" by The Roger Webb Sound, "Early Morning Eyes" by The Peacock Band, "JTL" by T2, "Evening Shade" by Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw, "Windfall" by Offspring, "Never Let Go" by Camel, "Bottles" by Belle Gonzalez, "Watching White Stars" by The Way We Live, "Wise Man In Your Heart" by Daevid Allen, "Til The Christ Come Back Home" by Bill Fay, "Pamela" by Scot Mist, and "O Caroline" by Matching Mole – a song which perfectly sums up the mood of the set. ✨✧ Ray BarrettoMessage (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Fania/Sony (France), 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Ray Barretto's hardest-hitting salsa albums of the 70s – a raw set of grooves that's got Ray moving away from the playfulness of the Latin Soul years, into a more righteous mode that's easily guessed at from the title of the set! The vibe here is very straightforward – with Ray coming down hard on conga, and working with a group that features Adalberto Santiago on lead vocals, plus Orestes Vilato on timbales, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Luis Cruz on piano. The sound is spare and raw – and titles include the wonderfully echoey tune "O Elefante", with some great elephant-like work on trumpet – plus "Con El Cimarron", "Se Traba", "Arrepientete", and "Te Traigo Mi Son". CD adds 5 bonus tracks including "Ay No" and "Indestructible". CD

The resultant sound is incredible – very full, rich, and earthy – and done in a way that interweaves African and Latin percussion styles with straighter American jazz! A few cuts have chanting by Blakey and Sabu – and titles on this second volume include "Otinde", "Swingin Kilts", "Dinga", and "Reflection". LP, Vinyl record album

A great little record from Charlie Palmieri – and one of his oddest! The "electro" in the title refers to a strange tinny organ that Charlie plays on many cuts on the record, a cool little instrument that gives the songs a nice twist. The backing's pretty great in the classic Coco Records mode – with strong salsa grooving, and a list of players that includes Tito Puente, Manny Oquendo, Roberto Roena, Cortijo, Cachao, and Andy Gonzalez. Ray Barretto's not looking too "irresistible" on the cover of this one – thanks to a too-white costume and sock-less espadrilles – but the record's still a great one, with a nicely jazzy vibe throughout! The album was Ray's last for Fania, but it's by no means a contract-filler – as Barretto keeps the group in tight formation as they make their way through a trumpet-heavy batch of tunes that only uses a bit of electric instrumentation from time to time. Vocals are by Carlos Torres, and most of the arrangements are by Ricky Gonzalez, who also plays keyboards and piano on the set. West coast Latin jazz legend John Santos digs even deeper than usual here – serving up a set of tracks that trace the roots of the Cuban descarga style, but all with some of the warmth and personality that have made his previous records so great! John's core group features the leader on percussion, Melecio Magdaluyo on saxes, John Calloway on flute and piano, Marco Diaz on trumpet and piano, Saul Sierra on bass, and David Flores on drums. But there's plenty of contributions from older Latin legends – like Jerry Gonzalez on trumpet, Orlando Maraca Valle on flute, and Orlando Torriente on vocals – part of an expanded lineup that also changes up the sound a bit too, in way that isn't strictly a recreation of the late 50s/early 60s descarga modes – but instead shows how much those roots have evolved to inform the modes of Latin jazz. Make no mistake, Champian's great on her own – a hell of a pianist, and one with a very strong voice that seems to instantly wrap up generations of piano jazz expression, but find a way to make it come across fresh and new – which is very much what Hamilton could do so well in his younger years, which makes him a great match for Fulton. Champian also sings on the record, too – although it's clear that the presentation gives most of the focus on the instrumentation, which is rock-solid throughout. Myndflower is a very cool trippy, hypnotic one-man instrumental project from Javier Gonzalez – the groovy musician who's also behind the groups Boogaloo Communicators and Indo-Sonix, but who manages to make some equally special sounds here as a solo act! The record's got a heady sound that's very much in keeping with its title and Javier's painting on the cover – moody, somewhat abstract, and with an echoey darkness that might make you feel like you're in some sort of invisible cave – at least while Javier's letting his guitars get all fuzzy and trippy as they slowly slide through the spare space of the record. There's also some work on electric sitar, kalimba, and oud – and titles include "Flight Of The Imaginary Bird", "Gathering Clouds", "Cohran", "Tears In A Glass Box", "Open Mynd", and "Voice Of The Spirits".
