✨✧ GonzalezGonzalez ... CD
Soul Brother/Expansion (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet funky jazz from the 70s! Gonzalez were an obscure UK combo – probably known a lot better over in England, but pretty darn hard to find over here in America – and they've got a tight style that reminds us of some of the more well-produced jazz funk coming out on labels like Blue Note or Blue Thumb during the mid 70s. Some cuts have vocals, but most of the record's instrumental – and it's filled with great guitars, and some excellent sax work that goes way past the usual funky tenor line! The groove's a nicely sophisticated blend of jazz funk and modern soul – with the kind of groove that you might expect to hear on some of the Capitol Rare compilations. The CD brings together cuts from the group's first album Gonzalez, plus a few more from the album Our Only Weapon Is Our Music. Titles include "Pack It Up", "Funky Frith Street", "Saoco", "Ahwai Five-O", "Rissoled", and "Adelanto Nightride". Very nice – and the kind of group we love to discover! CD

✨✧ Antonio GonzalezTiritando ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice compilation of Antonio Gonzalez flamenco rumba material that he cut for the Belter label – blending gypsy tradition with Cuban son, mambo, guaguanco, chachacha – and uber-charismatic vocals! Antonio's voice is really allowed to standout on these recordings, which is the way it should be – passionate and slinky or feverish and impassioned depending on the tune – with handclaps and cajon percussion, excellent guitar and occasional piano and other instrumentation. Titles include "Extranos En La Noche", "Tiritando", "Chica De Ipanema", "Trulurele", "Lola", "Alguien Canto", "Muchacho Barrigon", "Que Me Coma El Tigre", "Dime", "Sabor A Mi", "Somos" and more. CD

Kirk LightseyFirst Affairs ... CD
Limetree (Netherlands), 1987. Used ... $14.99
One of the most hard-edged albums we've ever heard from pianist Kirk Lightsey – thanks to the presence of Jerry Gonzalez on congas, which really adds a nice extra bite to the record! The whole lineup is great – and includes Santi Debriano on bass and Eddie Gladden on drums – but it really seems to be Jerry's percussion that kicks the whole album into gear – bringing up a bit more bottom than usual in Lightsey's work on the keys, and giving even the mellower moments a Latin current that really keeps things fresh – and which we would have liked to hear more from Kirk over the years. Titles include "Habiba", "For Albert", "One Finger Snap", "Blues On The Corner", and "Eighty One". CD

Kirk Lightsey with Freddie HubbardTemptation ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... $16.99
A very hip group, and a wonderful meeting between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Kirk Lightsey! We always like Kirk, but love him even more when he's working with a horn player – as his sound seems to catch fire, and move with even bolder notes than usual – which is definitely the case on the album's opener, a nice take on Hubbard's classic "Gibraltar" – in a spirit that continues strongly throughout! Bass is from Santi Debriano, drums are from Eddie Gladden, and Jerry Gonzalez plays percussion on one track – and Freddie's in that great 80s sound of his – a mode that's a return to the straighter hardbop of his Blue Note years, but with the phrasing learned during his 70s funk years – on titles that include "Gibraltar", "Evidence", "Brigitte", "Temptation", and "Society Red". William ParkerMigration Of Silence Into & Out Of The Tone World Vols 1 to 10 (10CD set) ... CD
Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... $79.99 89.99
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

David SanchezSketches Of Dreams ... CD
Columbia, 1995. Used ... $4.99
One of the strong albums that David Sanchez cut for Columbia in the 90s – clean, simple, back-to-basics playing, done with a strength and confidence not exhibited by most other young players of his generation! The album mixes together modern and Latin jazz modes – all graced by Sanchez's soulful work on tenor, and some occasional freer flights on soprano. Milton Cardona, Leon Parker, and Jerry Gonzalez all give the set some wonderful Latin percussion – and the rest of the group includes Danilo Perez, Roy Hargrove, and Adam Cruz. Titles include "Africa Y Las America", "Bomba Blues", "Mal Social", "Tu Y Mi Cancion", "Little Melonae", and "The Extension". CD

Far out psychedelia from the late 60s to mid 70s Spanish scene – rare grooves from small labels and private pressings by groups & artists like Juan Muro, Pedro Gonzalez, Microns, Marquez, Barbara, Tinglado and more! It's great stuff that covers a broad range of styles, from fiercly percussion jams with strains of funk, to some that skew closer to Latin soul rock with Hammond keyboard grooves. Includes "Vuestro Mundo" by Juan Muro, "Quiero Bailar" by Alcy Aguero Y Su Orquestra Pop, "Liberacion" by Microns, "Barahunda" by Marquez, "I Miss You" by Tinglado 13, "Distorsionando" by Greg Segura, "Smartypants" by Polos Opuestos and more. 14 tracks in all. VariousEnglish Weather ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
One of the coolest compilations we've ever heard from Ace Records – a really special set that follows in the tradition of their other St Etienne cafe/pub collections – and like those gems, a very different package than usual! This time around, the duo of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (who you'll also know from the Croydon International label) focus on an overlooked strand of British sounds at the start of the 70s – music that's moody, often jazzy, and almost always touched with a hint of blue – a kind of melancholic moment after the heady 60s – one that takes into stock all the great changes that had happened in the music, but delivers them in this laidback style that's completely unselfconscious. This isn't singer/songwriter material, and it's not progressive either – although it carries light traces of some of the best of those scenes – and if we had to try to dig for a tag for these tracks at all, we might use the term "folk funk" that was bandied about years ago – for cuts that have a vibe that's complex yet personal, and lots of jazziness in the phrasing. Titles include "Last Cloud Home" by The Orange Bicycle, "Love Song With Flute" by Caravan, "Moon Bird" by The Roger Webb Sound, "Early Morning Eyes" by The Peacock Band, "JTL" by T2, "Evening Shade" by Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw, "Windfall" by Offspring, "Never Let Go" by Camel, "Bottles" by Belle Gonzalez, "Watching White Stars" by The Way We Live, "Wise Man In Your Heart" by Daevid Allen, "Til The Christ Come Back Home" by Bill Fay, "Pamela" by Scot Mist, and "O Caroline" by Matching Mole – a song which perfectly sums up the mood of the set. ✨✧ Kenny KirklandKenny Kirkland ... CD
GRP, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the sharper-edged sessions on the GRP label at the start of the 90s – a self-titled set from keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, who's mostly working here in a stripped-down acoustic mode! The lineup changes a bit from track to track – and in addition to Kenny on keys, the set also features Jeff Tain Watts on drums, Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano sax, Charnett Moffet on bass, and Don Alias and Jerry Gonzalez on percussion. Some tracks are quite spare – one number is even just a drum solo by Watts – and there's a slightly modern undercurrent at points, as you might find in Marsalis family music of the same point – nothing that's ever too out, but a slightly dark edge that adds a bit more depth than you might expect. Titles include "Celia", "Chance", "Midnight Silence", "El Rey", "Mr JC", "Criss Cross", "Revelations", and "Ana Maria". CD

✨✧ Ray BarrettoMessage ... LP
Fania, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Ray Barretto's hardest-hitting salsa albums of the 70s – a raw set of grooves that's got Ray moving away from the playfulness of the Latin Soul years, into a more righteous mode that's easily guessed at from the title of the set! The vibe here is very straightforward – with Ray coming down hard on conga, and working with a group that features Adalberto Santiago on lead vocals, plus Orestes Vilato on timbales, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Luis Cruz on piano. The sound is spare and raw – and titles include the wonderfully echoey tune "O Elefante", with some great elephant-like work on trumpet – plus "Con El Cimarron", "Se Traba", "Arrepientete", and "Te Traigo Mi Son". ✨✧ BrownoutOozy ... CD
Nat Geo, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Massively heavy funk from Brownout – and a set that may well be their greatest so far! We weren't sure what to expect when the group hit the Nat Geo label – but honestly, they seem like they're even rawer and rootsier than before – really serving up a brilliant blend of funk and border rhythms – produced to perfection by the trio of bandmates Adrian Quesada, Greg Gonzalez, and Beto Martinez! Tracks are heavy on percussion and guitars – but are topped with jazzy flourishes on trumpet and trombone too – and there's definitely a strong echo of grooves from East LA and the Texas funk scene from decades back. Titles include "Ando Y Dando", "Flaximus", "Stormy Weather", "Meter Beater", "What You Did", "Rub A Dub", and "Poor You". CD

Titles include "Mind Games", "Laying It Down", "Awakening", "A Swing Touch", "Never Again Is Such A Long Time", "It Ain't What It Was", "It's A Bird", "Tribute To Holiday" and "Long Before Our Mothers Cried". ✨✧ VariousMany Moods Of Brigade Nouveau ... CD
Brigade Nouveau (Germany), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first release from a great new label – one that we'll be hearing plenty from in years to come! Brigade Nouveau is devoted to updating the sounds of the 60s – taking older bossa, mod, and groovy jams – and spinning them out with a cooler and more abstract approach, in the spirit of some of our favorite retro work on labels like Irma, Schema, and Compost! The man behind the magic is Zack Stingl, well known to us for his great ear in compiling sets of classic original easy tunes – which makes him more than the right person to head up such an effort. Titles include "Belem Minha Cidade" by Bobby Brazil, "South Of Order" by Panaman, "Place De La Concorde" by Audio Empire, "Cocktails & Candlelights" by Linda Paris, "Supernatural (short mix)" by Earl Harbour, "Papaver Orientale" by Jardin Botanico, "Natura Morte" by Osaka Soundlab, "Voce Abusou" by Luigi Ladu & Margarita Gonzalez, "Night At The Tropicana" by Dos Dynamicos, and "I Am A Legend" by Rude Rock Hunter.
