✨✧ Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache BandFire Dance ... CD
Milestone, 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez cooks away nicely with his Fort Apache band – swinging in that hip mix of Latin and jazz that's always made the combo so great! This sweet set was recorded live, which gives the band lots of long, open-ended tunes on which to really open up and do their thing – rhythms cooked up beautifully by the trio of Larry Willis on piano, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Steve Berrios on drums and percussion – topped with magnificent hork work from Jerry on trumpet, John Stubblefield on tenor, and Joe Ford on alto and soprano sax. The live setting gives the production a really classic no-nonsense feel – and titles include "Isabel The Liberator", "Today's Nights", "Elegua", "Ugly Beauty", and "Verdad Amarga". CD
(Punch through barcode and promotional stamp on CD.)

William ParkerMigration Of Silence Into & Out Of The Tone World Vols 1 to 10 (10CD set) ... CD
Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... $79.99 89.99
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

VariousEnglish Weather ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
One of the coolest compilations we've ever heard from Ace Records – a really special set that follows in the tradition of their other St Etienne cafe/pub collections – and like those gems, a very different package than usual! This time around, the duo of Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs (who you'll also know from the Croydon International label) focus on an overlooked strand of British sounds at the start of the 70s – music that's moody, often jazzy, and almost always touched with a hint of blue – a kind of melancholic moment after the heady 60s – one that takes into stock all the great changes that had happened in the music, but delivers them in this laidback style that's completely unselfconscious. This isn't singer/songwriter material, and it's not progressive either – although it carries light traces of some of the best of those scenes – and if we had to try to dig for a tag for these tracks at all, we might use the term "folk funk" that was bandied about years ago – for cuts that have a vibe that's complex yet personal, and lots of jazziness in the phrasing. Titles include "Last Cloud Home" by The Orange Bicycle, "Love Song With Flute" by Caravan, "Moon Bird" by The Roger Webb Sound, "Early Morning Eyes" by The Peacock Band, "JTL" by T2, "Evening Shade" by Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw, "Windfall" by Offspring, "Never Let Go" by Camel, "Bottles" by Belle Gonzalez, "Watching White Stars" by The Way We Live, "Wise Man In Your Heart" by Daevid Allen, "Til The Christ Come Back Home" by Bill Fay, "Pamela" by Scot Mist, and "O Caroline" by Matching Mole – a song which perfectly sums up the mood of the set. ✨✧ Chico O'FarrillPure Emotion ... CD
Milestone, 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bold-toned Latin jazz from Chico O'Farrill – one of a handful of excellent 90s sessions cut for Milestone Records – a label who really let Chico reclaim the glory of his older Verve albums from years back! The style here is a bit more modern – echoes of some of the Latin jazz changes that took place as the 70s moved into the 80s – but the setting is still relatively traditional, too – a large jazz group arranged and conducted by O'Farrill, with all the best Cuban influences he brought to his work in the US over the years. Players include Mario Rivera on saxes, Victor Paz and Michael Mossman on trumpets, Lenny Hambro on alto and flute, Jerry Gonzalez on percussion, and Andy Gonzalez on bass – and titles include "Igor's Dream", "Pura Emocion", "Pianits", "Campina", and "Chico & The Men". CD

✨✧ John SantosArt Of The Descarga ... CD
Smithsonian Folkways, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
West coast Latin jazz legend John Santos digs even deeper than usual here – serving up a set of tracks that trace the roots of the Cuban descarga style, but all with some of the warmth and personality that have made his previous records so great! John's core group features the leader on percussion, Melecio Magdaluyo on saxes, John Calloway on flute and piano, Marco Diaz on trumpet and piano, Saul Sierra on bass, and David Flores on drums. But there's plenty of contributions from older Latin legends – like Jerry Gonzalez on trumpet, Orlando Maraca Valle on flute, and Orlando Torriente on vocals – part of an expanded lineup that also changes up the sound a bit too, in way that isn't strictly a recreation of the late 50s/early 60s descarga modes – but instead shows how much those roots have evolved to inform the modes of Latin jazz. Titles include "14 Mission", "Juego De Ajedrez", "Lo Tuyo No Va", "Descargarara", "Tichin", "Descarga Con Changui", and "Los Misterios". CD

✨✧ Kirk Lightsey with Freddie HubbardTemptation ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very hip group, and a wonderful meeting between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Kirk Lightsey! We always like Kirk, but love him even more when he's working with a horn player – as his sound seems to catch fire, and move with even bolder notes than usual – which is definitely the case on the album's opener, a nice take on Hubbard's classic "Gibraltar" – in a spirit that continues strongly throughout! Bass is from Santi Debriano, drums are from Eddie Gladden, and Jerry Gonzalez plays percussion on one track – and Freddie's in that great 80s sound of his – a mode that's a return to the straighter hardbop of his Blue Note years, but with the phrasing learned during his 70s funk years – on titles that include "Gibraltar", "Evidence", "Brigitte", "Temptation", and "Society Red".
