✨✧ VariousPacific Breeze 2 – Japanese City Pop, AOR, & Boogie 1972 to 1986 (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet sounds from a real golden age in Japanese music – a time when the scene had picked up plenty of influences from the US scene, but was carefully crafting some great styles of their own! The music here has touches of jazz, fusion, soul, and AOR – but there's a special balance that's a bit different than American chartbound material of the time – tight, but never too slick – and with a great ear for allowing the more interesting sides of the music to come forth in all the best ways – so that although catchy, the tunes aren't just going slavishly for a hook or a hit! There's a lot of resonance in the instrumentation with some of the scene that had Japanese jazz musicians working with American fusion players – but the overall approach is maybe more soul-based overall. An even deeper set than the first volume – with titles that include "Kanpoo" by Yumi Murata, "Hidari Mune No Seiza" by Tetsuji Hayashi, "Yubikiri" by Eiichi Ohtaki, "Vibration" by Kimiko Kasai, "Pink Shadow" by Bread & Butter, "The Tokyo Taste" by The Sadistics, "Blind Curve" by Momoko Kikuchi, "Skyfire" by Eri Ohno, and "Rainy Saturday & Coffee Break" by Junko Ohashi & Minoya Central Station. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nora OrlandiA Doppia Faccia ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing work from Nora Orlandi – one of the few major female film composers on the Italian scene, and a talent that we always rank right up there with the male greats of the golden days! This set has a real Morricone-like balance of darkness and light – although the style is different than Morricone's, with maybe a more open ear for variance across the tracks in the set – even though there's a strongly unified feel to the whole thing – this beautiful journey in sound that begins with the first vocal track, ends with the last one – and moves nicely through a mix of mod groovers, creepier numbers, and both jazzy and avant moments – all arranged and conducted by Robby Poitevin, with lead piano by Nora herself! The limited vinyl reissue features two unissued tracks, plus great notes from Orlandi on the back. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ K-DefUnpredictable Gemini/Way It Was ... CD
Redefinition, 2016. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of K-Def LPs – 2016's Unpredectible Gemini and the compilation Way It Was – together in a single set! Gemini is funk steeped instrumental hip hop – with an ear for and the skill to recreate not only the soul beat sound of classic, so called "golden era" hip hop, but with inspiration that stretches back even further to the cinematic soul sound of the 70s – all the while with an evolving style that's fully relevant post-millenium. Timeless stuff! Includes "A Threat To Society", "Creeping Out", "A Message From The Biz", "Lean Wit' Me", "My Funky Soul Experience", "Syncopated Funk", "Sounds Like...But It's Not", "Day Before The Storm", "Shakin' Off The Haters", "Untouchable Funk Lesson", "Reminiscent Of The Golden Era", "Gotta Get Away" with Damu The Fudgemunk & AG and more. Way It Was is rarities and unheard tracks from the K-Def vaults – plus a handful of new/current cuts, circa the mid 20-teens – some vocal and some instro! K-Def is such a timeless soul, the year of origin is honestly of little concern to his craft – it's cohesive all the way – and the titles include "Uneke", "How Nice I Am", "For The Family", "Some Ole Sah B Shh", "Strawberry Lemonade" and more. Guests include Blu and Damu The Fudgemunk. CD

Tony DavisGolden Year ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Tony Davis is a jazz guitarist with a difference – an artist who's not out to revolutionize his instrument in jazz, but who still finds a way to play with a very distinct approach! Tony's quality isn't easy to put in words – he's not working the fret in a weird way, or using any sort of effects or gimmicks – but he does get a very specific sound out of the instrument, one that's full of shimmering colors and light – often quite chromatic, but usually with a dexterity that might match more sharper-toned musicians! Davis' sound springs into life from the very first note on the set – given nice direction from David Bryant on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Eric McPherson on drums – and the record also features work from Steve Wilson on flute and alto on two tracks, and Steve Davis on trombone on two as well. Alina Engibaryan sings on two of the album's tracks – "Lake Sebago" and "Orange Feathers", both originals by Davis – and other tunes include "Night Ride", "Braeburn", "El Gran Birane", "Hypnagogia", and a nice version of "Con Alma". EMI, 1976. Used ... $4.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condensed than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". ✨✧ Atle Nymo/Ingebrigt Haker Flaten/Hakon M JohansenPlay Complete Communion ... CD
Bolage (Norway), 2007. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fresh reworking of Don Cherry's legendary Complete Communion album for Blue Note – played here by a trio of Norwegian players who are clearly inspired by the original! The lineup here is a bit different than the classic version – with Atle Nymo on tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Hakon Mjaset Johansen on drums – all working in a mode that's kind of a lyrical extrapolation of Cherry's ideas – almost more poetic than Don's take on the music, but still handled with an equal degree of power. The shifting tones in Nymo's tenor are wonderful – and Flaten's bass is always appreciated in the open structure of a record like this. Titles include "And Now", "Complete Communion", "Golden Heart", "Remembrance", "Wind Sand & Stars", "Bishmallah", "Elephantasy", and "Our Feelings". CD

Rail BandBelle Epoque Vol 3 – Dioba ... CD
Sterns (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 2CDs ... $18.99
A third selection of work from the golden years of Mali's legendary Rail Band – and a set that digs even deeper than the first two volumes! Despite being third in the set, this volume features just as wide a range of work as the other two – mostly material from the 70s, plus a few early 80s tracks – packaged with a wealth of vintage photos, and full notes in both English and French – really telling the story of this amazing ensemble, and setting out the key historical moments in their music! The grooves are sublime throughout – often quite complicated from a rhythmic perspective, and wrapped up in a blend of percussion, guitar, and horns that's simply incredible – almost other-worldly at points, but given a nice dose of humanity in the vocals of singers who include Sekou Kante, Mory Kante, Magan Ganessy, and Djelimady Sissoko. 19 tracks in all – with titles that include "Maki", "Mady Guindo", "Den Nadiya", "Talassa", "Soyomba", "Foliba", "Kibaru", "Bedianomogo", "Diby", "Tidiane Kone", and "Mariba Yassa". RhinocerosRhinoceros – The Elektra Albums 1968 to 1970 (Rhinoceros/Satin Chickens/Better Times Are Coming) (3CD set) ... CD
Elektra/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A great little package – three overlooked gems from Rhinoceros – all packaged together in a single box set! First up is their self-titled debut – the great first album from Rhinoceros – a group that's every bit as heavy as their name, and who really deserved much bigger fame than they received at the time! The sound is a great late 60s fusion of psych, blues rock, and other modes – given a nice Elektra Records spin and sense of freedom that really allows the group to be something strong on their own – sometimes adding in more sensitive vocals or harmonies that really show a lot of depth – balanced by strongly jamming guitar and lots of heavy drums! Titles include "When You Say You're Sorry", "I Need Love", "Belbuekus", "I Will Serenade You", "Along Comes Tomorrow", "Apricot Brandy", and "That Time Of Year". Next up is Satin Chickens – only the second album from Rhinoceros, and the group are already stretching out their wings – as you might guess from the offbeat cover of "Satin Doll" that beings the proceedings! As before, Rhinoceros are a wonderfully fine-tuned ensemble – working here with the sharpness of the best of the Bay Area or Detroit groups of the generation – which helps them move through familiar styles into very different territory that's all their own – yet supported by the kind of well-crafted guitar work, heavy rhythms, and thoughtful vocals that really earn them a place in the pantheon of Elektra Records during the golden years. Titles include "Monkee Man", "Don't Come Crying", "Back Door", "Funk Butt", "In A Little Room", "Chicken", and "Top Of The Ladder". CD

✨✧ Ed TownsendNew In Town/Glad To Be Here ... CD
Capitol/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of overlooked gems from singer Ed Townsend – a talent we'd rank right up there with Jesse Belvin or Arthur Prysock in his early years! First up is New In Town – an obscure early session from Ed Townsend – an artist who's perhaps better known as a songwriter of hits for others, and slightly less as a 70s soul singer on Curtom and Casablanca! Yet here, Ed's starting out his career as a mainstream crooner – cast by Capitol as a sepia Sinatra, and even working with arrangements from Frank's Capitol mainstay, Nelson Riddle! There's a bit more drama here than you might hear on a Sinatra album – a slightly deeper range that slides towards more conventional pop vocals of the period – but the whole album's pretty darn compelling, especially the overall package. Titles include "Symphony", "I Am", "New In Town", "Goin My Way", "Till The End Of Time", "Mam'selle", "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me", and "Lover Come Back To Me". Glad To Be Here is another great album – every bit as wonderful as the first! Orchestrations are by Nelson Riddle, and the album's got a gentle swing that we really enjoy – Ed singing over some lesser known tracks, and bringing a raspy soulfulness to the more familiar ones. Titles include "What's Wrong With Me", "Golden Earrings", "I'm In Love", "Don't Ever Leave Me", and "On The Street Where You Live". CD

Almost a "greatest hit" of "greatest hits" collection – given the importance of this album to the David Bowie catalog! Sure, it compiles tracks from other releases – but it also was the album that gave the world the killer cut "John I'm Only Dancing" – one of the key cuts in Bowie's gender revision in the 70s – and a title that was previously only out as a single! Alongside that gem, you also get a fantastic run of greatness from Bowie's first chapter of recording – the kind of cuts that would make other singers weep – including "Space Oddity", "Changes", "Ziggy Stardust", "Suffragette City", "Jean Genie", "Diamond Dogs", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Fame", and "Golden Years". ✨✧ Hailu MergiaYene Mircha ... LP
Awesome Tapes From Africa, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great new recording from Hailu Mergia – the Ethiopian keyboardist who's given us some great records over the years! This set has Hailu working on both of his strengths – using keyboards in the lead on some tracks, accordion on others – plus a bit of melodica, and just a slight amount of vocalizations – all at a level that's a really wonderful update of older Ethio-jazz styles, but with a vibe that's much more laidback and relaxed! Some of the younger artists in this scene are maybe a bit more tied to the styles of the golden years – but Hailu instead just uses bass and drums for support, and expands with a warmly jazzy current that still echoes plenty of the best elements of his older albums. Titles include "Semen Ena Debub", "Yene Mircha", "Bayine Lay Yihedal", "Shemedefer", "Yene Abeba", and "Abichu Nega Nega". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige (Japan), 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great early trio session from Ray Bryant – the kind of record that instantly shows why he caught such fire on the scene! There's a simplicity here that's almost invisible – a command of the keys that's strong, but not nearly as show-offy as some of Bryant's contemporaries. And given that Ray always managed to kick up a groove on the left side of the keyboard with his firm approach to rhythm, he's definitely a group player in the trio on the set – an excellent combo that features the wonderful Ike Issacs on bass and Specs Wright on drums. Titles include "Splittin", "Golden Earrings", "Sonar", "Changes", and "Daahoud". CD

Kenny Clarke & Francy BolandGolden Eight – Encore! ... LP
Rearward (Italy), 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Way more than an "encore" of the legendary Clarke Boland album Golden Eight – and instead a whole different set of recordings, done way back in 1961, but unissued until now! The album's a killer through and through – every bit the same sort of gem you'd get with the early Clarke Boland albums of the pre-MPS years – extremely tight large ensemble jazz, driven with plenty of soul in the rhythm section, and swinging with some incredible solos that further deepen the sound! Right from the start, the pair were totally on the money – and work here with a lineup that's filled with key European soloists, including Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Derek Humble on alto sax, Karl Drewo on tenor, and Fats Sadi on percussion – not to mention the core crack rhythm trio of Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include the great Boland originals "A Ball For Othello", "La Campimania", "You Dig It", "Pape Satan Aleppe", and "Free Wheel" – plus a great version of "Invitation". LP, Vinyl record album

UK/RPM (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99
The complete recordings of Kursaal Flyers – one of the sharper, wittier groups of the UK pub rock generation – although one that never made the leap to our side of the Atlantic! There's a really special vibe going on here – the kind of group who were clearly raised on the roots of rock and roll, but who have a wit and talent that allows them to push things forward with all these little twists and turns, almost as if they're making a commentary on contemporary rock while serving up a pretty good entry in the genre! The group recorded for the same UK label that issued the early material by 10CC – and there's a similar balance going on here, right down to some really inventive production that makes the whole thing come together nicely. The package features four full albums by the group – Chocs Away, Great Artiste, Golden Mile, Five Live Kursaals, and A Former Tour De Force Is Forced To Tour – plus 17 more bonus tracks, and a big booklet of notes! There's kind of a broken, jagged sound to the record – a late nite vibe that's blue and melancholy, and which gets some great support from the tenor sax of Archie Shepp – which often gets a chance to solo on most tracks! The rhythms are gentle, often a bit spare – and handled by Hilton Ruiz on piano, Jack Gregg on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – and the set also features work from trumpeter Roy Burroughs. Tracks include three original compositions, "Painted Lady", "Throw It Away", and "Caged Bird", plus a sublime version of Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady". Also includes Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady", and Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has edge wear and splitting. NOTE: Vinyl has an unplayble mark on "Throw It Away".)

CBS/Madfish, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 37.99
We'll be honest, we don't find the title of this Mott The Hoople classics compilation hyperbolic at all, it finds the glam rock era heroes at the their best – crunchy guitars, shiny melodies and deep single hooks all the way. Golden Age Of Rock & Roll indeed! 20 tracks from the CBS years – including the UK single versions of "All The Young Dudes", "One Of The Boys", "Roll Away The Stone", "Honaloochie Boogie", "All The Way From Memphis", "Saturday Gigs", and "Foxy Foxy" – plus a live version of "Ballad Of Mott The Hoople", recorded in Zurich in 1972! Alex PudduGolden Age Of Danish Pornography ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2011. New Copy ... $16.99
Classic-styled funk from Alex Puddu – not only the greatest record we've heard from him so far, but a set that's definitely worthy of its "golden age" claim in the title! The music is all new, but it was done for a series of short Danish porno films from the 70s – and Puddu gets a sound that's right on the money for the vintage – loads of great short funky soundtrack modes that are perfect for the time – handled with tight rhythms, great basslines, and some wicked jazzy solos that really send the whole thing home. Puddu plays a range of instruments – including electric sitar – in a group that also features some great Fender Rhodes, organ, sax, and flute – and the tunes are really wonderful throughout – like finding a lost soundtrack from the 70s that never got issued as an album. Titles include "Kinky Hairdresser", "Miss Butterfly", "Madam Delight", "Sex Bar", "Lusty Nurses", "Black Triangle", "Naughty Girls At The Wild Party", "The Dirty Games Of Dr Love", and "Piano For Lovers". A really beautiful little set of tracks – music composed to accompany vintage porn films from the 70s – played to perfection by the great Alex Puddu! The story behind the project is great – a friend was involved in rescuing and issuing rare porn from the underground – most of which no longer had any sort of soundtrack. Puddu was called in because of his skills with vintage-styled grooves – and stepped up perfectly with the sweet instrumentals you'll hear in this wet – tracks that are heavy on sweet keyboards, slinky basslines, and funky guitars – often served up with tighter, funkier styles than you'd hear in the original films – even though the overall sound is still very vintage. There's lots of Fender Rhodes on the set – and titles include "Hot Mouth", "Horny At The Office", "Boys & Girls & Danish Hot Dogs", "She Wants It Black", "After Party", and "Bad Love". CD

Later Bond, but John Barry's still firmly in place – and is more than capable of turning out another wonderful thriller soundtrack! As with the scope of the film, the range of tunes is a bit more spread out than usual – stepping across a variety of locales to set the mood with an expansive array of themes. Lulu sings the title cut – one of the lesser-remembered Bond tunes – and the other tunes include "Kung Fu Fight", "Hip's Trip", "Chew Me In Crisly Land", "In Search Of Scaramanga's Island", "Getting The Bullet", and "Goodnight Goodnight". Cerrone's definitely got the Golden Touch here – grooving long and strong, with that mix of cosmic club and warmer disco that made his 70s music so great! The album's a masterpiece all the way through – driven by great percussion from the maestro, and swirled up into a heavenly mix at the legendary Trident studios – with some mighty sweet keyboards that really make the whole thing sparkle! There's a nice undercurrent of fuzz at points, too – hinting at French club to come – and the whole thing's a wonderful standard-setting record that really earns all the accolades it's gotten over the years. Titles include the long funky version of "Rocket In The Pocket" – plus "Je Suis Music", "Look For Love", and "Music Of Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Important mid 60s work from Ornette – and one of the few recordings of this format to see larger release at the time! The set captures Ornette in a much freer style than heard on his Atlantic recordings from a few years before – paying alto, violin, and trumpet, in a trio with David Izenzon on bass and Charles Moffett on drums. Tracks are long and unbridled – with less of the rhythmic changes that you'd hear in work by the classic quartet, and more of a full-on fierce soloing mode. ✨✧ Aretha FranklinRare & Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing discovery in soul – rare and unreleased sides from Aretha Franklin's prime years at Atlantic Records – nearly all of which are as exciting as the classics in her catalog! The work here is truly incredible – a range of demos, outtakes, and other rare moments that all offer up Aretha in a more personal, intimate setting – one that shows a bit more of the roots of her years before Atlantic in Columbia, sometimes with a bit more jazz in the mix as well. The overall feel is still very much the kind of soul you'll know from Franklin's Atlantic albums – especially as the set moves on into the early 70s – but there's a less-iconic feeling here that we really love – a way of getting past the legend, and even more into the person – at a level that's really helped rekindle our love of Aretha's music! The package features 35 tracks in all, nearly all of which have never been released – and titles include rare versions of "Sweet Bitter Love", "Rock Steady", "I Need A Strong Man", "Heavenly Father", "I Want To Be With You", "Ain't But The One", "Love Letters", "Are You Leaving Me", "My Way", "My Cup Runneth Over", "You're Taking Up Another Man's Place", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "The Fool On The Hill", "Talk To Me", "Mr Big", "Lean On Me", and "Suzanne". ✨✧ Ramsey LewisFunky Serenity/Golden Hits/Solar Wind/Sun Goddess ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A quadruple-header from Ramsey Lewis – four albums from his great 70s electric period on Columbia Records! First up is Funky Serenity – sweet electric funk from Ramsey Lewis! The album's one of his best from the 70s – and it's got Ramsey on Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and other keyboards, grooving away in an open-ended 70s mode that still retains all the heavy soul of his classic work for Chess. Morris Jennings adds in some very nice percussion with his drum work, and Cleveland Eaton's on funky bass, giving the set a strong bottom groove. Features the sublime sample cut "My Love For You", a great version of "Knights In White Satin" that's done with a weird spacey groove, plus the tracks "Kufany Mapenzi (Making Love)", "Serene Funk", "What It Is!", and "Dreams". Golden Hits isn't a "best of", but instead has Ramsey and his funky mid 70s trio with Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton revisiting some of his best loved material from the Cadet years, but with the groovy Rhodes and wah wah sound that we dig so much about his CBS recordings. Unlike some of the other records from this period, the group's nice and stripped down, just the electric piano, bass and drums, so the groove's nice and wide open, Ramsey and company popping along with the sanctified soulful vibe of his 60s work, but updating their sound with some nice electric touches. 9 numbers in all: "Hang On Sloopy", "Blues For The Night Owl", "Hi-Heel Sneakers", "Carmen", "Delilah", "Wade In The Water", "Slippin' Into Darkness", "Somethin' You Got", and "The In Crowd". Solar Wind was cut smack dab in the middle of Ramsey's glory days at Columbia Records – with great production help and work on bass from the mighty Cleveland Eaton! The style is nice and lean, with just some occasional fuller touches – and Ramsey plays plenty of Fender Rhodes, in addition to bits of Arp and moog too – in a setting that's mostly trio, with a few guest players stepping into the mix from track to track! There's a nice degree of fuzz at points, thanks to added help from Steve Cropper – and titles include a great funky version of "Summer Breeze", plus "Solar Wind", "Come Down In Time", "Love for A Day", "Hummingbird", "Jamaican Marketplace", and "Sweet & Tender You". Sun Goddess is one of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the drummer in Ramsey's trio before starting his own group – and the shared relationship both artists had with producer Charles Stepney! The three were all key parts of the late 60s sound at Chess Records – but here, they've brought the same soulful energy to Columbia – working in a wider, more mature groove for the 70s – one that has Lewis' wicked Fender Rhodes lines stretching out strongly over tight, compressed, funky lines from EWF! The centerpiece of the set is the massive 7 minute "Sun Goddess", but there's lots of other nice ones like "Living For The City", "Gemini Rising", and "Jungle Strut". Funky, electric, and sublimely wonderful all the way through! CD

Excellent work from Frankie Beverly and Maze! The record is one of the group's best, and has a wonderful mellow groove that's totally on the money on nearly every cut – a mature, sophisticated approach to soul that really made Maze a standout act at the end of the 70s! There's a slight jazzy vibe running through most of the record, supported with warmly flowing grooves, impeccable songwriting, and great vocals from Frankie all the way through. Titles include the excellent track "Golden Time Of Day", one of those slinky modern soul midtempo numbers that were one of the best things about the late 70s soul years – plus the tunes "I Need You", "I Wish You Well", and "Travelin Man". MPS (Japan), Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An extended collection of material from one of Baden Powell's first great bossa sessions in Europe – recorded in a light and lively MPS mode that's a bit different than some of his work at the time in Brazil! Rhythm is by the team of Eberhard Weber on bass and Charly Antolini on drums – both players with non-bossa roots, but who push Powell's groove into some slightly new directions – almost hailing the Brazilian influence that would show up even more strongly in European jazz in years to come! Sidney Smith also adds a bit of flute into some of the tracks on the album – underscoring the moodier moments with a subtle tone next to Powell's more pronounced guitar – and the whole thing's got a sense of poise, grace, and beauty that's simply tremendous! Titles include "Euridice", "Consolacao", "Feitinha Pro Poeta", "Dindi", "Reza", "Samba Triste", and "All The Things You Are". LP, Vinyl record album

Searing work from saxophonist Muriel Grossmann – a player who clearly draws a lot of inspiration from late 60s John Coltrane – but who also turns out a record here that's completely her own! The tracks are long, modal, and very spiritual – and the group has an unusual balance between Grossmann's tenor and soprano, and the guitar of Radomir Milojkovic – whose edgey tones here almost remind us of some of the trippier 60s sounds from Gabor Szabo! The group also features pulsing rhythms from Gina Schwarz on bass and Urus Stamenkovic on drums – a duo who really push things forward, and keep the soulful spirit of the music intact – but it's clearly Grossmann who's the lead star here, as she really blows us away with her work on both tenor and soprano! This is deep stuff – not an easy nod to the spiritual scene, but a much richer record – extremely well-conceived and executed. Titles include "Golden Rule", "Core", "Traneing In", "Trane", "Light", and "Direction". CD

✨✧ AssociationComplete Warner Bros & Valiant Singles Collection ... CD
Warner/Now Sounds (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... About April 2, 2021
Mindblowing music from The Association – a heady double-length package that features every single the group ever cut for the Valiant and Warner Brothers label – which together make for an amazing evolution in sound! Although best remembered for their few soft rock hits, The Association were a hell of a group who never stopped growing back in the 60s – from sublime folksy harmonies at the start, to more complicated baroque pop as years went on, to some psych elements, and even a return to rootsier sounds they never had in the first place – always delivered with qualities that were head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – and perfectly put together in the best LA studio styles, with help from giants like Curt Boettcher, Gary Paxton, Bones Howe, and others. The group also became quite skilled in the studio themselves – as you'll hear in the book's copious notes and comments from members themselves – all a perfect package for a set that features 37 mighty tunes that include "Six Man Band", "Goodbye Columbus", "Like Always", "No Fair At All", "Standing Still", "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies", "Looking Glass", "Birthday Morning", "Makes Me Cry", "PF Sloan", "Just About The Same", "Traveler's Guide", "I Am Up For Europe", "Hear In Here",a nd "Forty Times" – not to mention some bigger hits! ✨✧ James Bond (Jimmy Bond)James Bond & His Sextet – Jazz Impressions Of Movie Themes ... LP
Mira/Piccadilly, 1965. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Way more than just a James Bond cash-in record – and instead an ultra-hip jazz session from the west coast scene of the 60s! The James Bond at the helm of the record is actually Jimmy Bond – the great bassist who worked on some key sessions of the late 50s and early 60s as a sideman, and who turns out to be a surprisingly great leader on this rare mid 60s date! The record is more jazz than anything else – played with a crime/spy bent, to be sure – but also flowing with really great solos and a fair bit of a bossa influence in the rhythms! The group here is more than hip enough to make the record work – with Harold Land on tenor sax, Bobby Bryant on trumpet, and Buddy Colette on flute and tenor – all working in a sextet led by Bond, with plenty of round, warm, almost modal lines on his bass – punctuated nicely by piano from Joe Parnello and drums by Joh Guarin. Arrangements are by Dick Groove – who keeps things very groovy – and many of the tracks here are actually original numbers written by Bond and Warren Baker, titled after Ian Fleming books that had not yet been made into movies at the time of this album! Titles include "Casino Royale", "Moonraker", "For Your Eyes Only", "007 Theme From Dr No", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Diamonds Are Forever", and "Live & Let Die". LP, Vinyl record album

Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much like the work Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, there's no mistaking this for anything but the real deal. Rough hewn in beautifully so – with perfect, funky backing by team Menahan. A timeless treasure! A smoking trio set from Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui – recorded in New York with help from Lisle Atkinson on bass and Leroy Williams on drums! The date's a bit later than some of the classics from the golden age of Japanese piano trio recordings, but has a very similar vibe – and in addition to very deft, expressive work from Fukui – a player who's maybe got more bop elements here than in his early days – the group also really sparkles with the work of Atkinson, a player who's sometimes overlooked, but who always brings a subtle depth to his sessions. One of the few rare albums cut by Japanese guitarist Ryo Kawasaki and his groundbreaking Golden Dragon group during the early 80s – a record that mixes some of the groove-oriented currents of his previous work with elements that are maybe more far-reaching and fusion-styled too! There's plenty of great guitar on the record – as you'd expect from Ryo – and the set also has reedman Azar Lawrence and percussionist Nana Vasconcelos – each of whom add their talents to some of the album's best cuts! Highlights include the soulful vocal track "Looking Around You", the spacey jammer "Quasar Infection", and the straight ahead "Maximillian" – plus other tracks that include "Little Tree", "Jamiko", and "Midnight Fire Engine". Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". ✨✧ Three DegreesGold (3CD set) ... CD
Philadelphia International/Crimson (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
A great collection of work from the Three Degrees – a female soul group who really found a way to move the music forward after the girl group years of the 60s! The trio had recorded previously, in a somewhat more standard style of Philly soul – but during the 70s they hooked up with the studio genius of Gamble & Huff, and managed to make some really amazing music that forever helped transform the style of female soul on the dancefloor! Their vocals are a perfect match for the soaring strings and lively rhythms of the Philly International groove – and the cuts are as sweet as they are grooving – a magical balance that few other groups could strike this well. This 3CD set is overflowing with great work – two tracks of regular cuts for Philly International, including work with MFSB – and a full CD with 10 more rare tracks – longer versions, single cuts, and live material. 40 tracks in all – with titles that include "Dirty Ol Man", "Woman In Love", "The Runner", "Jump The Gun", "Golden Lady", "Red Light", "Out Of Love Again", "Bodycheck", "Magic In The Air", "TSOP", "Love Is The Message", "Take Good Care Of Yourself", "La Chanson Populaire", "Giving Up Giving In", "My Simple Heart", "Free Ride (live)", "Starlight (long version)", "The Runner (extra long version)", "Love Train (live)", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (live)", and "Living For The City/For The Love Of Money (live)". Mel TormeCalifornia Suite ... LP
Bethlehem, 1957. Sealed ... $7.99
An insane record – simply insane! Mel Torme wrote the California Suite as a tribute to his home state during the glorious postwar years of growth and boom – and it contains some of the weirdest songs he ever sung! At the base, the work is driven by the same west coast jazz arrangements by Marty Paich that you'll find on some of Mel's other Bethlehem albums – but the songs can be incredibly goofy, rhyming towns in CA with catchy words and phrases, pairing Marines in San Diego with wealthy old widows, and leveling San Francisco with one of the worst puns on "Golden Gate" that we've ever heard! Still, the album's an essential one if you're a fan of Mel Torme – not only because it's got some wonderful vocals in the best parts, but also because it's a true reflection of his deep commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz music. Tracks include "West Coast Is The Best Coast", "They Go To San Diego", "LA", and "Poor Little Extra Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Pompeii/Goldenlane, Late 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $18.99 19.98
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by Ike & Tina Turner – 3 albums cut for the short-lived Pompeii label, all of them nice and heavy! First up is So Fine – a great one from Ike & Tina – recorded for Ike's short-lived Pompeii subsidiary for Atlantic, with a hard heavy sound that's really great, almost a mixture of the duo's Sue sides with some of Atlantic's southern soul from the same time – but with this badass funk current that really shows the way that Ike was evolving his groove since the start of the 60s! Titles include "Too Hot To Hold", "Bet'Cha Can't Kiss Me", "Ain't Nobody's Business", "I Better Get Ta Steppin", "So Fine", "We Need An Understanding", and "A Fool In Love". Next is Cussin Cryin & Carryin On – one of Ike Turner's greatest albums ever – recorded for the Pompeii Subsidiary of Atlantic, and featuring some raw tunes that have more than a bit of funk in them! The album includes 2 killer instrumentals – "Thinking Black" and "Black Beauty" – both of which you'd be proud to own as funky 45s! Other tracks feature some hard soul vocals by Tina – and titles include "You Got What You Wanted", "So Blue Over You", "Cussin, Cryin, & Carryin On", "Make Em Wait", "I Better Get Ta Steppin", and "I'm Fed Up". The set also features the solo Ike Turner album Black Man's Soul – the only truly funky album that Ike Turner ever recorded! This set's a batch of obscure funky instrumentals – and sounds like a strong compilation of rare 45s, filled with hard funky drums, nice breaks, and plenty of super-tight grooves. Nearly every cut's a winner – and titles include "Black Angel", "Black Beauty", "Freedom Sound", "Ghetto Funk", "Funky Mule", "Nuttin' Up", "Scotty Souling", and "Thinking Black". Very nice stuff, and a real lost recording for Ike! All 3 albums are in mini-LP sleeves – like the original records. CD

VariousLocal Customs – Lone Star Lowlands ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Rare rock from the Golden Triangle scene of Southeast TX in the late 60s and early 70s – a well-curated overview of the stylistically sprawling material being cut at Mickey Rouse's Lowland Recording Studio in Beaumont! Texas rock of the late 60s and early 70s justifiably brings to mind acts like The 13th Floor Elevators and The Bubble Puppy – tripped out psychedelia in other words, but Texas is huge, and there was a heck of a lot more going on than just the best remembered cult favorites. The music coming out of just the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, Texas "triangle" chronicled here was incredibly diverse. It includes proto TX boogie rock that's a clear precursor to early ZZ Top, harmony flavored numbers that sound closer to Cali than they do The Lone Star State, one track that somehow fuses CS&N with The Beatles and does so with prominent cowbell in the mix (and it's good!!!), punchy psych grit, and swaggering country rock with some twang in the strings that feels a bit more profoundly Texan. You don't need our word that The Numero Group has devoted some serious attention to detail – with a 35-page booklet of notes, photos and histories, plus the impressive Lost In The Golden Triangle "family tree" of the regional musicians involved – as if discovering these long buried regional relics wasn't impressive enough already. Beautiful! 22 tracks in all: "Trash One" by the Lowland Studio Band, "Live My Life Today" by Insight Out, "Simple House" by Mother Lion, "Love Of The Morning" by Circus, "Take A Look At Your Friends" by Next Exit, "You Know I Love You" by Roy Briggs & Alton Tew, "Calling Me Home (Demo)" by Donald Thomas and more. Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". Massive keyboard work from Ronnie Foster – one of his sweet funky 70s sets for Blue Note – and a killer all the way through! Some of the best cuts feel like blacksploitation funk – with Foster taking long solos over some great instrumental grooves – often with the same offbeat twists and turns, and cool colors he brought to his Two Headed Freap album. Production is by Sandy Linzer and Charles Calello – the latter of whom is clearly right at home with the groovers – and in addition to "Native New Yorker", other cuts include "Ever Lovin Sam", "You Keep Me Dancin", "Thank You God For One More Day", "Weekend Lover", "Easy Come Easy Go", and "Golden Hands". A really wonderfully-done collection of work from the legendary Sun Ra – put together by longtime musical partner Marshall Allen, and way way different than the typical mish-mash of tracks you'd find on some of the budget or public domain titles on the market! First off, the track selection is really thoughtful – music that definitely defines the Arkestra in the 60s and 70s, but which also highlights some of its overlooked corners too – pulled together from recordings that appeared on the Saturn, Impulse, and other labels – all curated and remastered by Art Yard, who've done their share of great Ra reissues over the years. Plus, the package features a few unreleased performances as well – and although it would serve as a great introduction to the music of Sun Ra, it's also really perfectly put together for longtime Ra fans as well – given the focus, track selection, and overall quality of the whole thing. The sounds are sublime – maybe one of the best summations of the righteous, cosmic genius of the Arkestra at its best – and titles include "Reflects Motion", "Island In The Sun (extended)", "Somewhere In Space", "The Lady With The Golden Stockings", "Somebody Else's World", "Ancient Aethiopia", "Astro Black", "Have You Heard The Latest News From Neptune", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Plutonian Nights". A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! For the young or otherwise uninitiated, Captain Kangaroo (played by Bob Keeshin) was a groundbreaking, legendary children's television program that ran from the mid 1950s to the early 80s – with silly charm to spare. This wonderful Christmas record comes from the early part of the 60s, with the grander period production touches to show for it – groovy chorus backing vocals, sound effects, and a big, bright sound – on Christmas classics, original material, fun spoken intros and interludes. Not hokey at all...a real charmer! Includes "Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas", "Jingle Bells", "Santa's Other Reindeer", "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas", "When Santa Claus Gets Your Letter", "Happy Little New Year" and more. CD

As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. LP features two bonus tracks – "Case Of The PTA" by Leaders Of The New School and "What's Up Doc (K-Cut's fat trac rmx)" by Fu Schnickens. LP, Vinyl record album
