Gogo PenguinHumdrum Star ... LP
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99 22.99
There's nothing humdrum about Gogo Penguin at all – as the combo are out to take the sound of the piano trio into their own great directions – really bursting forth here with a sense of energy and imagination that even blow away their previous records! The group is simultaneously concerned with the wider sound of the piano – which occasionally hits waves of sound that almost feel lifted from the post-classical scene, but a lot more dynamic – while the bass and the drums really amplify their role when called up, so that the proceedings are always thrusting forward boldly – in ways that almost remind us of the excellent Indigo Jam Unit from Japan. Titles include "Return To Text", "Transient State", "Bardo", "Strid", "Reactor", "Window", "Prayer", and "A Hundred Moons". LP, Vinyl record album

Mayumi Sonoda with Kichiro Sugino TrioGogo Sanji No Aki ... LP
Johnny's Disk/Studio Mule (Germany), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99 35.98
An overlooked gem from this hip Japanese singer – a vocalist who's got a different take on jazzy modes than some of her contemporaries – with a raspy vibe that's maybe closer to the work of European vocalists like Karin Krog or Monica Zetterlund at their best! Mayumi Sonada has none of the sweet, straight tones of some of the bigger female jazz singers from Japan at the start of the 80s – and the record's definitely not one of those that's trying for pop/soul crossover – as backing is by an acoustic jazz trio, led by pianist Kichiro Sugino, with Mayumi's vocals right up front in the mix – very unadorned, and inflecting the English lyrics in all these great ways. The performance isn a live one – and titles include a great version of "Boy Named Charlie Brown" – plus "It's Over", "Where Can I Go Without You", "The Wooden Gong Dreamy", "All Of Me", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". Experience UnlimitedFree Yourself ... LP
Black Fire, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An early record by Experience Unlimited – better known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". This one's nothing like that stuff – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju. This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness". LP, Vinyl record album

Trouble FunkSaturday Night Live – From Washington DC ... LP
Island, 1983. Near Mint- ... $9.99
This was the moment when it seemed like Go Go was really going to break out huge – Trouble Funk recording for a major label, with lots of wide exposure, and plenty of critical acclaim that made GoGo seem like it really was the next big thing in black music. The album captures the group live – always a good move, since that's what they were made for – and although the songs are a bit short for some total jamming, there's still plenty of nice funky moments. Titles include "A Groove", "That's What We're Talking About", "Take It To The Bridge", "Double Trouble", "4th Gear", and "Give Me A Quick One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Victor DemeVictor Deme (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Chapa Blues/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2007. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
An album that became an instant legend in global music circles – the recorded debut of Victor Deme, a guitarist and singer who'd been working in his native Burkina Faso for over 30 years before getting the chance to step inside a studio! The turn "studio" might be a loose one here – as the album was recorded on a four track, in a distant space in the country – but has a vibrancy that beats most other bigger label releases of the time – thanks to a tremendous power in Deme's vocals, which have a raspy presence that grabs you far beyond just an understanding of language – and which are often matched by guitar work from Issouf Diabate, who inflects these subtle bluesy elements that spark new colors in the songs, but in a nicely understated way. A record with a very unique sound, and a lasting classic – with titles that include "Dankan", "Tama Ngogon", "Dala Mogoya", "Djon Maya", "Toungan", "Cherie", "Burkina Mousso", and "Djarabi". Lutz KrajenskiLutz Krajenski Plays Hits A Go Go ... CD
Agogo (Germany), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
A great little idea for a project – one that has groovy sounds from the Agogo label reinterpreted by jazz arranger Lutz Krajenski – but always in a way that hangs on to all the soul of the originals! Lutz plays some really wonderful keyboards – deeply soulful throughout, in a jazz combo that features trumpet, tenor, flute, and plenty of percussion – as well as the fantastic soul vocals of Alana Alexander, whose presence in the lead really helps give a new shape to these songs! The music here was originally conceived by artists who include Hi Fly Orchestra, Mop Mop, Da Lata, Juju Orchestra, Mo Horizons, and others – but honestly, these versions maybe have even more depth than the originals, and a fantastic blend of jazz and soul. Titles include "Son Montuno", "This Is Not A Tango", "Loa Chant", "Us", "Spinning Top", "Supreme", "Soul Desire", and "I Got Hope". CD

Soul SessionTwo (with bonus dowload) ... LP
Agogo (Germany), 2017. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
The second Soul Session is every bit as great as the first – a wonderful blend of contemporary rhythms and crackling vocals – served up by producer Ralph Keifer, with help from guests who include Georgia Anne Muldrow, Anaj, Tokunbo, Omar, and Fatma Tazegul! Rhythms are relatively spare, but have the careful craft of the best 21st Century soul – never just throwaway dancefloor beats, but instead a nicely rich blend of rhythms and keyboards – linking classic depth with contemporary clarity. Most of the tracks are vocals, but there's also some sweet instrumentals too – and titles include "Never Let Me Go", "Quantraversa", "Sun Shines Softly", "The Passage", "Wish The Beat To Never Stop", "Liberation", "Samba De Alfama", "Transformation", and "Steely Dan". Ace (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
80s come back, all is forgiven – especially when you sound so great in a collection as cool as this one! Ace Records is an imprint that we've loved for decades in the worlds of soul, rare rock, and R&B – but they've also got a keen ear for all things chartbound, and have served up some excellent pop collections from the 50s and 60s over the years. This time around, they hit the 80s – and bring together 23 tracks that hit the charts big in the early part of the decade – some by artists who were among the biggest of the period, others by folks that are maybe best remembered by these single hits – all given the care, liner notes, and proper showcase that Ace brings to its reissues. In other words, this overstuffed package is way better than some of those schlocky no-name collections on the market – and will have you reveling in the glory of tunes that include "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, "I Need You" by Paul Carrack, "Baby I Lied" by Deborah Allen, "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper, "I'm Happy That Love Has Found You" by Jimmy Hall, "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do" by Huey Lewis & The News, "I've Done Everything For You" by Rick Springfield, "Our Lips Are Sealed" by The GoGos, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar, "Walking Down Your Street" by The Bangles, "Is It Love" by Mr Mister, "10 9 8" by Face To Face, "No Getting Over Me" by Ronnie Milsap, "ROCK In The USA" by John Cougar Mellencamp, and "The Valley Road" by Bruce Hornsby & The Range. ✨✧ Mo HorizonsMusic Sun Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Agogo (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's been a few years since we last heard from Mo Horizons – a group who first sprang onto the scene many years ago with a great style of blending clubby elements with more global influences! This time around, they're even more globally-conscious than before – not just dropping in the odd bossa rhythm of jazzy line on top of a groove – and instead working in a range of languages, rhythms, and instrumentation – all augmented by a wide mix of guest artists that includes Noam Bar, Ivan Camelo, Coneccion Bogota, Mr Morski, Stoyan Royanov, Nene Vasquez, and Tricky Patrick – all of whom leave their mark on the music. If you liked Mo Horizons before, you'll find even more to love here – as the sound is a lot more mature and complex, on titles that include "Gypsy Ghetto Feel", "Hang Loose", "Little Mouse", "Wagabunga Dance", "Mo Space (part 2)", "Rhythm Is A Dancer", and "Ella Dice". CD features the bonus track "Inner Melody (Mo Horizons alt instrumental rmx)" by Pavlov with A Angelides. CD

✨✧ Gal CostaGal A Todo Vapor – Fa Tal ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible live album from Gal Costa – one that's easily as great as any of her studio albums from the time! But unlike the studio albums, the style here is quite spare and intimate – a very personal presentation of Gal's music, recorded in a way that has her starting out nearly solo at the start, then adding in band members as the concert rolls on. The first portion of the performance mostly features acoustic guitar and Gal's vocals – in a style that's a bit like late 60s Nara Leao or Maria Bethania – but the second half gets more electric, often with some trippier Tropicalia touches! Titles include "Falsa Baiana", "Coracao Vagabundo", "Como 2 e 2", "Hotel Das Estrelas", "Mal Secreto", "Assum Preto", "Antonico", "Sua Estupidez", "Fruta Gogoia", and "Perola Negro". CD

✨✧ Zbigniew NamyslowskiWinobranie ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Avant modal jazz from Polish saxophonist Zbigniew Namyslowski – a name that's not easy to say, but which has been associated with some great music over the years! This early 70s session has Namyslowski really building on his earlier work with Krzysztof Komeda – taking the angular, modern style of the 60s, and forging it into the freer, more rhythmic mode of the post-Coltrane generation! The tracks on the set are long and pulsating – making strong use of the rhythm section to build things up, then rolling out with exploratory solos that push the envelope, yet still follow the overall groove of the set. Namyslowski himself is playing cello and piano in addition to his regular alto sax – and other instrumentation includes tenor sax, trombone, and bass clarinet. Titles include "Wine Feast", "Not Less Than Five Percent", "First Take", "Gogoszary", and "No Dough, No Kicks". LP, Vinyl record album
