Gogo PenguinHumdrum Star ... CD
Blue Note, 2018. Used ... $2.99
There's nothing humdrum about Gogo Penguin at all – as the combo are out to take the sound of the piano trio into their own great directions – really bursting forth here with a sense of energy and imagination that even blow away their previous records! The group is simultaneously concerned with the wider sound of the piano – which occasionally hits waves of sound that almost feel lifted from the post-classical scene, but a lot more dynamic – while the bass and the drums really amplify their role when called up, so that the proceedings are always thrusting forward boldly – in ways that almost remind us of the excellent Indigo Jam Unit from Japan. Titles include "Return To Text", "Transient State", "Bardo", "Strid", "Reactor", "Window", "Prayer", and "A Hundred Moons". CD

✨✧ Gogo PenguinOcean In A Drop (10 inch LP) ... LP
Blue Note, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
A short set from Gogo Penguin, but a fantastic one too – a record that seems to pack all the energy of a longer performance into these tunes that leap right out of the grooves of the record – a cascading blend of piano, bass, and drums – all used in ways that are completely different from a conventional trio! The back of the album has a "music for film" notice – and we're not sure if these tracks were ever used in a movie, but they're certainly vivid enough on their own. Titles include "Four Corners", "Ocean In A Drop", "Control Shift", "Time Lapse City", and "Nessus". LP, Vinyl record album

Kaleta & Super Yamba BandMedaho ... CD
Ubiquity, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 14.98
That's a pretty trippy cover on the front, and an image that really sums up the vibe of this excellent record from Kaleta – a set that's even sharper and funkier than any of his previous efforts – yet which has some nicely way out qualities too! The instrumentation is heavy on elements from old school funk – both Afro and Anglo – but the execution is very individual, and graced strongly by the wicked guitar work of the leader – who steps out in front of the band with the majesty of some West African genius from years back – calling out boldly with his lyrics, and turning out guitar parts that clearly know the farther reaches of the fuzzy spectrum, but which also never stray too far from the groove to get lost in their own space! Everything is tight and right on the money – and the record packs a lot more punch than some of its contemporaries, as you'll hear on titles that include "Hungry Man Angry Man", "Jibiti", "Goyito", "Medaho", "La Guele", "Adjoto", and "Gogo Rock". ✨✧ El ChiclesLa La La ... CD
Wah Wah (Spain), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent reissue of funky work by this obscure European combo – a favorite with grooveheads for years because of their unique mix of funk, exotica, and strange studio touches! In a way, these guys are kind of like a collision between Mandingo, Chakachas, and Serge Gainsbourg – with lots of nice conga work, breathy wordless vocals, funky flute, and sexy tribal grooving. The set includes their classic slow funk cut "La La La", plus the tracks "King Kong", "Streaking A Gogo", "Wild Groove", "Bantu", "Please Love Me", "Girl Safari", "Brigitte Bardot", and "Music For A Playboy". ✨✧ Experience UnlimitedFree Yourself ... LP
Black Fire, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An early record by Experience Unlimited – better known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". This one's nothing like that stuff – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju. This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wojciecha GogolewskiegoSkok Nr 8 ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Polish keyboardist Wojciecha Gogolewskiego isn't exactly a household name – but he might get plenty of play around your house if you're a fan of Fender Rhodes! This set of unissued tracks from the 70s is completely wonderful, and done in a hard-jamming fusion style – the leader's keys on top of the heavy rhythms, really shaping the sound in these bold, blocky ways – while reedman Mieczyslaw Wolny brings in a more lyrical, colorful vibe on flute – blending with the electric piano in a style that takes us back to CTI Records in the earlier part of the decade! Tracks are long and open, perfect for the slow-building sensibility of Wolny – who almost reminds us of Hubert Laws in his more spacious recordings – and titles include "Ballada Dla G", "Poranna Kolysanka", "Lan", "Grzyb Mun", and the 17 minute "Suite For M". WanubalePhosphenes ... LP
Agogo (Germany), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A funk band with horns, but one with a very different feel than the rest – as these guys have arrangements that are nicely complicated up top – in a way that has the horns moving in all these really wonderful, colorful sort of ways! Instead of the usual inspirations from 60s soul or 70s Afro Funk, these guys use their horns in ways that might be more linked to jazz – never in a way that's too heady, but which has a great sense of tone and interplay – as the mix of trumpet, tenor, baritone, and trombone really do great things over the lively rhythms, guitar, and keyboards from the rest of the group! There's a very fresh feel to the record throughout – no vocals, and styles we've never heard before, yet groovy enough to fit right in on the Agogo label – with titles that include "Hickups", "Fake Five", "Ticking Boxes", "Strange Heat", "Noto", "U9 By Bike", and "Choose Your Truth". VariousRockin In The USA – Hot 100 Hits Of The 80s ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
80s come back, all is forgiven – especially when you sound so great in a collection as cool as this one! Ace Records is an imprint that we've loved for decades in the worlds of soul, rare rock, and R&B – but they've also got a keen ear for all things chartbound, and have served up some excellent pop collections from the 50s and 60s over the years. This time around, they hit the 80s – and bring together 23 tracks that hit the charts big in the early part of the decade – some by artists who were among the biggest of the period, others by folks that are maybe best remembered by these single hits – all given the care, liner notes, and proper showcase that Ace brings to its reissues. In other words, this overstuffed package is way better than some of those schlocky no-name collections on the market – and will have you reveling in the glory of tunes that include "What I Like About You" by The Romantics, "I Need You" by Paul Carrack, "Baby I Lied" by Deborah Allen, "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper, "I'm Happy That Love Has Found You" by Jimmy Hall, "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do" by Huey Lewis & The News, "I've Done Everything For You" by Rick Springfield, "Our Lips Are Sealed" by The GoGos, "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar, "Walking Down Your Street" by The Bangles, "Is It Love" by Mr Mister, "10 9 8" by Face To Face, "No Getting Over Me" by Ronnie Milsap, "ROCK In The USA" by John Cougar Mellencamp, and "The Valley Road" by Bruce Hornsby & The Range. ✨✧ Gyedu-Blay Ambolley11th Street Sekondi ... CD
Agogo (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer contemporary set from Gyedu Blay Ambolley – one of the Afro Funk heroes of the 70s, still sounding fantastic after all these years! The album was all recorded at Ambolley's Simigiwa Studios in Ghana – and arrangements, instrumentation, and production are all in a very classic mode – with the leader on tenor and vocals, stretching out with this nicely raspy quality that's a great evolution in his sound – as if he's found a way to put even more feeling and experience into the sound that he gives us! The rest of the lineup features keyboards, trumpet, tenor, alto, guitar, and plenty of percussion – on titles that include "Black Woman", "I No Dey Talk I Do De Lie", "Ignorance", "Little Small Girl", "Sunkwa", "Who Go Pay", "Brokos", and "Who Made Your Body Like Dat". ✨✧ Zbigniew NamyslowskiAir Condition – Polish Radio Jazz Archives Vol 28 ... CD
Polskie Radio (Poland), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album titled after the studio set Air Condition, by Polish saxophone genius Zbigniew Namyslowski – but which is actually a live date from the start of the 80s – done with a very freewheeling sound! Namyslowski was a key avant player in the 60s, got very spiritual in the 70s, and hit the 80s with a more electric approach to his music – but which still carried forward the charms from earlier years! Here, he blows alto and soprano sax with a group that features Marek Blizinski on guitar, Jan Cichy on bass, and Wojciech Gogolewski on piano and keyboards – on these long-spun tracks that sometimes remind us a lot of the late 70s electric work by Sonny Fortune on Atlantic. Titles include "The Tree Of Fear", "Piri Rim Pim Pim", "Signal Air Conditioner", "From The Bottom To The Top", and "Mr Chamberlin's Samba". CD
