Globe Unity Orchestra & GuestsPearls ... LP
FMP/Be! (Germany), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
One of the greatest albums ever from the Globe Unity Orchestra – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the quality of the group's work in the 70s! The ensemble were key in helping to develop the concept of an improvising orchestra – not the older model of a group where the players might get some short solo space – but a setting of many musicians, all improvising together as they make their way through loose compositional ideas – really opening new doors in music along the way! The remarkable thing here is that the lineup is all heavy hitters, but they all find space to respect and encourage each other as they create on the spot – a large lineup that includes Enrico Rava, Manfred Schoof, and Kenny Wheeler on trumpets; Anthony Braxton, Peter Brotzmann, Ruiger Carl, Evan Parker, Michel Pilz, and Gerd Dudek on reeds; Albert Mangelsdorff, Paul Rutherford, and Gunter Christmann on trombones; Alexander Von Schlippenbach on piano; Peter Kowald and Buschi Niebergall on basses; and Paul Lovens on drums. Titles include the side-long "Every Single One Of Us Is A Pearl" – with more than enough space to allow individual musical expression, and really live up to its title – plus a version of Monk's "Ruby My Dear", with arrangements by Schlippenbach, and the tracks "Kunstmusik II" and "The Onliest The Loneliest". Afro SoultetAfrodesia ... CD
Banyon/Luv N' Haight, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 15.98
The wildly diverse, heavily percussive global jazz, soul, and exotica inspired Afrodesia from the late 60s combo Afro Soultet – a crazy rare one, too! The group purportedly has roots in Texas, but incarnations of it were gigging around LA a bit earlier as Afro Latin Blues Quintet +1 and a bit later as Afro Latin Soultet. Here they play with boundless inspiration from around the globe. Afro Latin percussion and rhythms hold it all together, but they bring in strains of Latin soul, African rhythms, straighter jazz and madly percussive instrumental rock. Producer/composer/arranger/raconteur Jack Millman plays drums in the group as Johnny Kitchen, and other players include Joey Dubreau on vibes, Frank Morris on guitar and harmonica, Eddie Paris on drums, Dean Elliot on percussion, William Quinn on flute & sax, and Bill Collins on keys. Includes "Afrodesia", "Mozamba", "Soul Rockin'", "Afro Revolt", "Torrid Zone", "Oom Gowa", "Slave Traders", "Drumbouie", "Aphro Bugaloo", "Chocolate Drop", "Le Berber" and "Sand, Sun And Sea". CD

The album that really broke the B52s out of the box – the one that took them from being an underground favorite in the clubs and the party scene, to being the kind of group that finally got the exposure they deserved! Of course, some of the help here comes from superproducers Nile Rodgers and Don Was – who really help the group focus on their hooks and crossover groove – all summed up perfectly on the album's hit "Love Shack" – a tune that still gets heavy play around the globe all these many years later. Other tracks include "Roam", "Channel Z", "Cosmic Thing", "Dry Country", "Topaz", "Follow Your Bliss", and "Bushfire". LP, Vinyl record album

Soundscape, 2005. Used ... $6.99
Sweden's Beatfantatic returns with an offering – one that's filled with elements of the best funky soul, Afro groove, thumping Latin and hip hop turntable wizardry one could spin into a glorious set! One listen and you'll understand why some of the globe's most tasteful DJs are singing Beatfanatic's praises. The record is clearly built from samples and found grooves – but mixed with the dynamic genius of the funkiest DJs! Where some of the better known turntablists, DJs and producers that get mentioned in the same circles have grown ponderous, Beatfanatic is all about the funky party at hand – really living up to their moniker! 15 tracks on the CD: "Pete's Funk", "El Ritmo", "Like A Sound", "African Love (album version)", "Boom Bangin'", "Let Us Pray", "Planet Earth (Beatfanatic rmx)", "Holdin' Out", "Blow My Mind" feat 12th Floor, "Doin' Fine" and more! Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-LoveHairy Bones ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

A great release by this really unique combo – a Brazilian group, but one who are equally interested in the African roots in their music – but in ways that are completely different than any other contemporary act we can think of! Camarao Orkestra aren't one of those Fela-styled Afro Funk combos that have popped up on nearly every scene around the globe in recent years – and instead, the music here is this really beautiful blend of Brazilian percussion, warmer production styles, and some deeper modes borrowed from the other side of the Atlantic – all fused together with instrumentation that's live, spontaneous, and never overproduced – in ways that really take us back to some of the best Brazilian musical experiments of years past! As part of that, the group take on one of the key tunes from the Afro Sambas project of Baden Powell and Vinicius De Moraes – "Canto De Imenja" – and move into their own tunes on other tracks that include "Canto Da Bahia", "Dia De Verao", "Nacao Africa", "Copacabana", and "Guerreiro Yoruba". Christmas happens all around the globe, even in spots where the snowfall is light, and a White Christmas is unlikely to happen – and while we're not entirely sure this is the way they celebrate the holiday on the South Beach of Miami, Dio and the Candi Cane Crew try to imagine what such a celebration might sound like! The approach here is electro soul with gentle bass – mostly using familiar Christmas tunes, reworked with a mode that's almost that crossover holiday soul style from the late 80s – but with the inclusion of a few new raps by group members from time to time. Titles include versions of "Frosty The Snowman", "Jingle Bells", "Sleigh Ride", "Last Christmas", "Santa Baby", "Let It Snow", and "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". CD

Angel Bat DawidOracle ... LP
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
Beautiful solo sounds from Angel Bat Dawid – a Chicago clarinetist who works here with the same inventive spirit as the other contemporary artists on the International Anthem label! By that, we mean that although Angel's music starts in jazz, it quickly becomes something else – as she assembled the record not from a solitary solo performance, but by overdubbing sounds she'd recorded around the globe, and back home in Chicago – mixing her own very beautiful reed lines with a variety of other instrumentation – all recorded on cell phone, which gives the whole thing a wonderfully fresh feel! Don't worry about the album being too gimmicky, or too DIY – as it's got the same appeal as a studio-recorded spiritual session by a larger group – and there's plenty of focus on Dawid's incredible solos on her chosen instrument, with a vibe that's likely to have her rising to the level of clarinet giants like Jimmy Guiffre or John Carter. Titles include "Black Family", "Capetown", "The Oracle", "We Are Starzz", "London", and "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black". LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin – his paramour at the time, and a much younger woman! This album is perhaps the archetypal Gainsbourg erotic effort – and it's filled with wonderful duets set to breathy, bouncy orchestrations – tunes that forged a whole new "adult" level in pop music – not just in France, but around the globe! The arrangements are amazing, and feature some of the weirdest instrumentation ever heard on a pop record – especially one that was as successful as this – and titles include the classic "69 Annee Erotique", plus"Jane B", "Elisa", "Orang Outan", "Les Sucettes", and "Manon". By this point in their career, they're so instrumentally strong, they hardly need to show off – that is, they certainly do, but in a much more subtle way than before, and maybe than in a live setting – packing decades of roots and years of deftness into songs that include "Franklin's Tower", "Crazy Fingers", "Sage & Spirit", "Blues For Allah", "Sand Castles & Glass Camels", and "The Music Never Stopped". Grupo BatuqueOle Ola – Futebol Bonito! – The Brazilian Soundtrack To The Beautiful Game ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2006. New Copy ... $5.99
A Brazilian tribute to football – but one that's given a distinctly London twist – as core rhythms by Wilson Das Neves, Dom Um Romao, and others are mixed up and augmented by Da Lata, Zero dB, Roc Hunter, Fauna Flash, and Osunlade! The album's got a depth and compelling quality that goes far beyond other records by Grupo Batuque – as tightly-played percussion riffs are mixed with sound effects, crowd noise, and commentary from football games – all in a rich sonic tapestry that goes past simple samba or batucada! The whole thing's almost like an audio document to the greatness of the sport and its importance in Brazilian culture – but thanks to the globe-spanning efforts of Far Out, the added production help should help settle more than a few disputes at the World Cup! Titles include "Torcida Do Flamengo", "E Ruim (Zero dB rmx)", "Ole Ola", "Isto E Samb", "Na Cancao Do Samba", "Ole Ola (Fauna Flash rmx)", "Na Batida Do Agogo (Osunlade rmx)", and "Berimbal Capoeira (Da Lata rmx)". A really unusual little album – one that partly embraces a globe's worth of acoustic percussion, partly expresses itself in the minimal percussion legacy after Steve Reich's Drumming, and partly embraces some of the electric/acoustic sounds of the New York downtown scene of the early 80s – in work by artists like David Van Tieghem or Peter Gordon! The group use a mix of vibes, balafon, marimbas, and other percussion instruments – then add in occasional beats or other electric elements, but usually in a subtle way – that blend of global and European modes that was also surfacing a bit on the Crammed label at the time. All tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Black Africa", "Back To The Factory", "Kpanlogo", "Biologic Music", and "Adowa". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic Fender Rhodes from Yusuke Hirado – plus a fair bit of other keyboards too – all delivered in a set that mixes 70s space jazz funk with some great contemporary elements, and in a way that's nicely different than Hirado's work in the group Quasimode! The set's got some old school rhythms, but plenty more moments that soar and take off with very contemporary cosmic energy – very strongly in a jazz perspective overall, but with a strong knowledge of all the other musical changes that have taken place on the hipper scenes around the globe over the past 20 years – woven into classic keyboard sounds that take on a whole new shape in the setting! An album that's unlike anything else we've ever heard before – served up by a percussionist who spent the mid 70s touring the Caribbean and South Pacific, and who seems to have absorbed a globe's worth of rhythms in the process! The album's probably closest to a jazz fusion album – as there's no vocals, and instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic – with lots of keyboard lines throughout, peppered with guitar, alto, tenor, and trumpet – yet the rhythmic changes are very different from familiar fusion, as is the role of the instruments – which don't always get solo space, because they're all so tied to the groove! The whole thing's got an upbeat, freewheeling vibe – sounds filled with plenty of joy and rhythm – and titles include "Tipi Fanm", "Doubout Pou Gade", "Syka", "Marie Blanche", and "Vini Coute E Tann". Osaka MonaurailThankful – For What You've Done ... CD
RD Records (Japan), 2005. Used ... $22.99
A massive bit of funk from the Japanese scene – served up by a group with a real love for the classic sounds of James Brown! Osaka Monaurail take their name from the JB's tune "Monaurail" (also picking up the misspelling in the process!) – and play in a JBs-styled mix of tight horns, riffing guitars, and socking funky drum bits that never seem to miss! The lead singer growls in a style that's a bit James Brown – but which is also touched by his own approach to the lyrics, in a tone that's one of the most unusual we've ever heard from a funk band. But the real strength of the set is in its grooves – tight, right, and perfectly done at a level that reminds us strongly of the best late 60s funk work on King Records – but which also has a hard-vamping style that's all its own! These guys come from the other side of the globe, but we'd easily rank them right up there with the best of the Desco, Soul Fire, and Daptone generation! Titles include "Double Up Now", "Back & Alive 77", "Thankful (For What You've Done)", "Two Houses Make A Happy Home (rmx)", "Six Days Of Madness", and "Mindpower (parts 1 & 2)". CD

Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates – even some of the offbeat psych and rock that the label has reissued from around the globe! There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their work – taking the core instrumentation of funky drums, choppy guitars, smoking keyboards, and soulful sax – and pushing it out with a Stark Reality-ish vibe that really makes the group stand out from the rest of the deep funk underground! The group are at their early creative peak here – with John Raskin on baritone, alto, soprano, and clarinet; Larry Ochs on tenor and sopranino; Andrew Vogt on alto, soprano, sopranino, and flutes; and Bruce Ackley on soprano and clarinet – all visionary players coming together with no other accompaniment at all – and really blowing us away especially on the longer tracks that sustain their ideas beautifully. There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa". Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
The long-overdue debut of Carlton Jumel Smith – a soul singer with roots at the Harlem address listed in the title, and who's slowly been working his way around the globe in recent years! Those global travels are key to the success of this set – as Smith works very tightly in Finland's Timmion studios with Cold Diamond & Mink – who bring to his music what the Dap-Tones or El Michels have brought to other singers in the deep funk spectrum! Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. Titles include "Love Our Love Affair", "I'd Better", "You Gonna Need Me", "Help Me", "Woman You Made Me", "We're All We Got", and "I Can't Love You Anymore". LP, Vinyl record album

A real turning point for Graeme Revell and SPK – a set that moves past the easy industrial and metal dance of the group's earlier records, and comes up with the more complicated soundscapes that would serve Revell well for years to come – both in his famous soundtrack music, and his more underground projects! The vibe here is definitely more in the latter mode – kind of the farther, darker reaches of the 4AD spectrum at its best – a matured version of some earlier industrial modes, with a greater sense of the sonic possibilities of the globe – and a trans-historical sensibility that really keeps things interesting – as Revell blends together acoustic and electric sources from a variety of instruments, and samples sounds from live locations too – all in this painterly style that illuminates tunes that include "In Flagrente Delicto", "In The Dying Moments", "Palms Crossed In Sorrow", "Invocation", "Necropolis", and "The Garden Of Earthly Delights". Tropicalia In Furs/World Psychedelic Classics, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A fuzzed out treasure trove of rare Brazilian psychedelia – wild stuff that's in many ways akin to the freewheeling sounds of the Tropicalia movement, but not necessarily taking on the cultural and political weight of that movement – and more about the boundless spirit of psychedelia and funk rock around the globe! The sounds are buzzing and indeed fuzzy throughout, ranging from raw and ramshackle guitar jams to more organ and drum driven funky, and it's really incredible stuff all around. We've been purveyors of hard to find Brazilian music for many many years, and this set – compiled by Joel Stones who also provides the richly detailed – brings to light some numbers we've never heard! 16 tracks in all: "Tema De Banana", "Era Uma Nota De" Loyce E Os Gnomes, "I Wanna Be Your Man" by Youngsters, "Ourico" by Serguei, "Lindo Sonho Delirante" by Fabio, "Cinturao De Fog" by Marisa Rossi, 'Som Imaginario De Jimmi Hendrix" by The Pops, "The Lantern" by Mac Rybell and more. Cool cuts from around the globe – all brought together in one wonderfully funky set! The music here all draws heavily from American funk and psych styles – and often uses some slightly different instrumentation, or more regional inflection – to make the usual psych funk styles sound even more groovy and exotic – in a mindblowing way that makes the entire set a real musical delight! Most tracks are instrumental – heavy on drums and fuzzy guitar – but there's a few vocal moments, too – and the funk current is super-strong, way more so than on other collections that promise a heavy bottom, but usually just present offbeat psych. Titles include "Jet Pop" by Bana Pop Band, "Foxy Lady" by 49th Blue Streak, "Karate Chop" by The Tijuana Brats, "Stari Dvorac" by Pro Arte, "Nie Przejziemy Do Historii" by Krzysztof Klenczon, "Louis Louis" by Friar Tuck, "Time Of Machines" by Sergio Ferraresi, and "The Shaman's Dance" by Alexandr Sergeyevich. The show was never churchy – but maybe an attempt to find a new sort of inner peace during the modern age – with a selection of songs in a really great range, all linked by the dry wit and understated presence of Cocker as an announcer. This set brings together key tracks from the early years of the show – music that spans decades, and runs from jazz vocal numbers, to electronic music nuggets, 70s AOR, underground folk, and a number of more recent tracks that show that Jarvis has continually had his ear on the rock underground around the globe. World Psychedelic Classics, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A funky psychedelic kaliedoscope of grooves from India – killer numbers from the 70s and into the early 80s – Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga, from the folks who put together the equally heavy Psych-Funk 101 and Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas compilations! Most of cuts here have a raw, fuzzed out undercurrent of psychedelia – guitars that buzz or lead searingly, depending on the needs of the number – with heavy, funk-based drums and/or hand percussion with rumbling bass rhythms. From that core, they bust out mightily with more furious percussion, rhythms, mad horn arrangements, and vocals that work as either a sweetener or for even more wild-eyed excitement! In short, global psychedelic funk rhythms with regional Indian folk and classical flourishes, blended with mod, soul, garage and soundtrack influences from around the globe. It's a funky, psychedelic fusion of east and west that's billed as a seminar, but this is no academic endeavor – it's a psych funk party all the way! Includes "The Mod Trade" by The Black Beats, "Psychedelia" by X'Lents, "Somebody To Love – Edit" and "Gairaag Dance Music – Edit" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Dance Music From Hare Rama Hare Krishna" by RD Burman, "Lekar Ham Diwana Dil" by RD Burman feat Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar, "Mary Long" by Atomic Forest, "Dharmatma Theme Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Phir Teri Yaad" by Hemant Bhosle feat Asha Bhosle, "Thanimayil" by Ilaiyaraaja fet Vani Jairam & Chorus and more. 20 tracks in all – with a thick booklet of notes on each track, plus loads of photos, original album & poster art, and more. Numero, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
The world of moogy music first exploded back in the late 60s – when artists like Bruce Haack, Perry-Kingsley, and others were making all these wonderfully weird records that featured heavy analogue electronics and other playful elements! By the 80s, most of that music had gone away – some migrating to the world of new age, others turning more mainstream – yet up in Eugene, Oregon, there was a small scene that continued the electronic experiments of years past – work that sounded very different than most of the darker cold wave and industrial sounds that were popping up at other points on the globe. This collection offers up a long-overdue look at that scene – and features work from a collective of artists who really continue some of the hippest traditions of the genre – from the early records that Bruce Haack made with Miss Nelson, to some of the weird Mort Garson productions, even to some of the more wigged-out French psych/electronics of the 70s. Some of these tracks have vocals, some are instrumental – and they're all nicely "switched on" – providing a great bridge between the world of Walter Carlos and the Stereolab generation to come. Titles include "Energy" by Kim Carter, "Other Playgrounds" by Peter Kardas, "The Seven Rays" by David Stout, "Finale From A Walk Down Serenity Lane" by Joel Horowitz, "Self Regulation 2" by Carl Juarez, "The Ride" by Talve, "New Snow" by Peter Nothnagle, and "Patterns" by Suse Millemann. Funky funky Thailand – just about the only 70s funk group we've ever seen from that part of the globe, and a great one at that! The Impossibles work in a tightly-crafted ensemble funk style that's clearly influenced by Kool & The Gang – but which also has the group hitting some well-polished notes on a few of the album's vocal numbers – in a totally cool groove that's got plenty of hard funky riffs at the bottom, sweet horns in the middle, and some great compressed pop vocals on the top! The album's a real lost treasure – one that we've never seen on this side of the Atlantic – and was oddly recorded and issued in Sweden in the mid 70s! But this album is way more than just a musical oddity – as it's super-funky all the way through, with a level of quality that will have it at the top of your crates for a long, long time! Other tracks are a bit straighter in the instrumentation, but still sparkle with a globe's worth of influence – Lloyd on piano, carving out sounds in a very unusual way! Some tracks are by Miller's trio, other by a quartet that features him, but which is led by pianist/trombonist Press Keys. Titles include "Hue Wail", "Pentalogic", "Tanya", "Natanie", "Guzel Gozler", "Prelude In The Iranian Mode Shur", "Impression Of Bhairava Raga", and "Njonja Mirah & Yona". Some of these tracks have appeared on Millers Oriental Jazz CD compilation – but others haven't – and this is his reissue of the full original album! LP, Vinyl record album

Great grooves from Chumei Watanabe – a set of funky cop show tunes from the 70s – served up in a whopping 76 track CD! Most of the numbers are short, but they've still got plenty going on – with loads of great keyboard work on organ, moog, and electric piano – layered nicely on top of funkier backings with sweet drums and rolling basslines. There's a slightly jazzy quality feel to some tracks, and stylistically, the record's a fair bit like some of the best Brit sound library work from the same time! The deepest of the deep from the American scene at the start of the 70s – groups so hip they weren't quite soul, weren't quite rock – and instead kind of a funky hybrid of both! After opening our ears to countless underground sounds from around the globe, the Now Again label turn back to some of the territory of its roots – the hinterland of groups who labored mostly in obscurity, but left behind a few funky 45s that have become the stuff of legend – and which show us that there was a much bigger psychedelic funk underground out there besides groups like Funkadelic or the early Ohio Players! Fontana/Light In The Attic, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark collaboration between Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin – his paramour at the time, and a much younger woman! The pair come together beautifully here in a set of sensuous duets – tunes that have an open, honest approach to the relations between the sexes – yet never in any sort of cliched late 60s hippie-esque ways. This album is perhaps the archetypal Gainsbourg erotic effort – and it's filled with wonderful duets set to breathy, bouncy orchestrations – tunes that forged a whole new "adult" level in pop music – not just in France, but around the globe! The arrangements are amazing, and feature some of the weirdest instrumentation ever heard on a pop record – especially one that was as successful as this. Backings are by Athur Greenslade – and titles include the classic "69 Annee Erotique" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus", plus "Jane B", "Elisa", "Orang Outan", "Les Sucettes", and "Manon". A tremendous record from one of our favorite saxophonists of the past decade – the completely sublime, completely wonderful Nat Birchall – a musician who was way ahead of the curve towards spiritual jazz that others have hit in recent years, and one who still does it better than anyone else! The title gives away only part of the story – as Nat's definitely paying tribute to the great Yusef Lateef, particularly the mix of soulful jazz and exoticism in his earlier work – but the overall execution is very much in the best Birchall mode – long-building tracks, really informed by a strong tradition of spiritual energy, and not just in musical form – as the leader blows tenor, soprano, bass clarinet, and handles a range of instruments from around the globe – in the company of Michael Bardon on bass, Andy Hay on drums and percussion, and either Adam Fairhall or John Ellis on piano, depending on the track. A few of the tunes are classics from the vintage Lateef songbook, and Birchall has also seamlessly contributed a few numbers of his own – making for a fantastic double-length set, with titles that include "Tales Of Saba", "Ching Miau", "Salaam Brother Yusef", "Inward Flight", "Brother John", "Not Yet Ornette", "Ringo Oiwake", and "Mashariki" – plus a great version of "Love Theme From Spartacus", a tune that Lateef made his own back in the 60s, with a fantastic reading that's gone on to inspire many. Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing package – three great albums by The Fall, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hex Enduction Hour – one of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! The jagged lyricism of Mark E Smith is razor-sharp – as is the instrumentation, which is heavy on that trademark noisy guitar from Craig Scanlon, weird keyboards from Marc Riley, and the driving power of the double drummers in the group! The music is every bit as textually explosive as the words on the cover – and titles include "Who Makes The Nazis", "And This Day", "Jawbone & The Air Rifle", "The Classical", "Mere Psued Mag Ed", "Fortress/Deer Park", and the classic "Hip Priest". Is Room To Live the greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". In A Hole is a fantastic double-length live album by The Fall – recorded at a time when the group was at the height of their creative powers! Tracks are pulled from their important early albums and singles, and delivered with a searing intensity that shows just how much the group could hang on to their jagged edge and razor-sharp wit in front of a live audience – especially one on the other side of the globe! Titles include "The Container Drivers", "Fantastic Life", "English Scheme", "Impression Of J Temperance", "Room To Live", "Hip Priest", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Backdrop", "Hard Life In The Country", "Who Makes The Nazis", "Gramme Friday", "Slags Slates Etc", and "Look Know". Box set features a bonus CD with Sessions, Singles, and Soundchecks – including material from live sets in Leeds, Manchester, and London, plus John Peel material from 1981. And another bonus CD with a full live set recorded in Melbourne, in 1982 – 14 tracks in all! CD

The complete Mole Trilogy from The Residents – a complicated longform work that dominated most of their recordings in the mid 80s, and which created a fair bit of bonus material and sidebar songs – all of which are compiled in this massive 6CD set! The Mole storyline is a very loose narrative used to give a bit more structure than usual to the group's offbeat mix of electronics, processed vocals, and all the strange instrumentation that made them a key bridge between academic experiments of the postwar years, and more progressive work to come in the postpunk scenes around the globe. The group always hid their identity, and were perhaps even more hidden than usual behind this long storyline – while still spinning out the kinds of sounds that always held their audiences rapt, and kept their listeners guessing. Older classics include "Cascavel" by Antonio Adolfo, "Reflexos" by Luiz Eca, "Homem Da Rua" by Lo Borges, "Procura Se Uma Virgem" by Orquestra St Moritz, "Samba Do Carioca" by Silvio Cesar, "Que Bandeira" by Evinha, "Lalari Olala" by Jorge Ben, "Hei Voce" by Dom Salvador & Abolicao, and "Baiao Violado" by Dominguinhos. Newer tracks include "A Pomba Girou" by Zero DB, "Calma Mamma (GP mix)" by Echo Soundsystem, "Beira Do Mar" by S-Tone Inc, "E Muita Dig Vei (Mar De Clive-Lowe mix)" by Ed Motta, "Ritmo Suave Bossa Nova" by Jaydee, "Vaga Lume" by Democustico, and "Clek Clek Boom" by Voltair. ✨✧ VariousMusic From Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service ... LP
Ace (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wild assortment of music from an equally wild source – a BBC Radio program hosted by Jarvis Cocker, presented on Sunday mornings as a way to relax and reach some sort of deeper spiritual consciousness! The blend is incredibly hard to describe in words, but a delight to hear on record – and the whole thing comes with detailed notes on the track selections from Cocker himself. Titles include "Snowed In" by Tim Rose, "Day Glo" by Serafina Steer, "Cold Rain" by Alternative TV, "Won't That Be A Happy Time" by Joseph & Louis Spence, "Old Molly Metcalfe" by Jake Thackery, "Waters Of March" by Art Garfunkel, "It's A Quiet Thing" by Morgana King, "Rock Intro" by Miranda July, "After The Gold Rush" by The King's Singers, "Invasion Muzak" by John Baker, "True Love Will Find You In The End" by Headless Heroes, "Cars" by The Katzenjammers, "Crazy In Love" by Antony & The Johnsons, "Don't Wait Too Long" by Bob Welch, "Baltimore" by Nina Simone, "December" by David Cain/Derek Boswell, "Gynopedie No 3" by Camarata Contemporary Chamber Group, and "The Interrogative Mood" by Jarvis Cocker & David Cunningham. NicolayCity Lights Vol 3 – Soweto ... CD
Foreign Exchange, 2015. Used ... $4.99
Brightly lit, breezily soulful grooves from Nicolay's globetrotting City Lights series – inspired by a +FE tour stop in South Africa – and it may be the best City Lights set yet! One thing we love about the series, and the Soweto entry in particular, is that Nicolay isn't out to copy the exact sounds you'd hear in classic or contemporary South African dance music, as much as he's doing his own distinct thing, as inspired by it. Some occasional vocals, especially the spoken narrative passages by Nomusa Nzima set the Soweto scene, and the South African rhythmic sensibility is a big part of the vibe, but it's got a broad, richly appealing vibe overall.. The keyboards walk the line between spacey and sophisticated, there's some great vocal contributions from Phonte, Carmen Rodgers and Tamisha Waden. Wonderful! Includes "Tomorrow", "It's In The Way That You Smile", "Aurora", "Sun Rings/Uprising", "Daydream", "Sawubona", "The Secret" and "There Is A Place For Us". CD
