Globe UnityImprovisations ... LP
Japo (Germany), 1978. Near Mint- ... $59.99
A key 70s session by one of the greatest improvising groups in avant garde jazz – the Globe Unity Ensemble, featuring (on this recording) work by players that include Evan Parker, Peter Kowald, Paul Lovens, Gerd Dudek, Peter Brotzmann, Albert Mangelsdorff, Derek Bailey, Alexander Von Schlippenbach, and Kenny Wheeler. With an improvisational supergroup like that, it's amazing to hear the way that egos are put aside for the sake of a stronger overall sound – and the album features 4 tracks that are a stunning example of free improv at its best! Nello Ciangherotti (Nenty & Silvano Chimenti)Sonorita Nel Lavoro ... LP
Globe/Sonor (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A really great sound library album – one with a sound that's as colorful and complex as its cover! The rhythms really run away right from the start here – with fast percussion at the beginning of the record, and lots of fast-moving funk throughout – often topped with weirder, wilder sounds that fit the trippiness of the cover image – which makes for a wonderful blend of funk and psych throughout! Some cuts have fuzzy guitar, others have keyboards that resonate with the percussion – and titles include "Folle Idea", "Distorsore Impazzito", "Un Pianoforte Folk", "Fischiando E Lavorando", "Dimensione Dell'Anima", "Transistor", "Metalmeccanici", and "Metallo E Cemento". Globe, 1960. Used ... $4.99
A great little soul album from singer Jimmy Jones – a sweetly voice crooner who bridges the gap between rougher soul artists, and the smoother sounds of singers like Sam Cooke and Jessie Belvin. The album's his only one from the time – and it features the single "Handy Man", plus "For You", "Ready For Love", "My Precious Angel", "Good Timin", "A Wondrous Place", "Never Had it So Good", and "I Just Go For You". Agent OrangeLiving In Darkness ... LP
Posh Boy, 1981. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Hard-ripping genius from Agent Orange – one of the group's first moments on wax, and arguably one of their greatest, too! The set's everything you'd ever want from an LA hardcore record from the glory days – tight, fast, simple, and completely effective – the kind of music that America did best, right at a time when the punk rock flag was failing in other parts of the globe – just guitar, bass, and drums – but played with an energy that set fire to a whole new generation! Includes the classic "Everything Turns Grey", a great remake of "Miserlou", and the cuts "Living In Darkness", "A Cry For Help In A World Gone Mad", "No Such Thing", and "Too Young To Die". The best we've heard so far from Dayme Arocena – a Cuban singer who's got a great way of reaching out from Havana with a sound that can circle the globe! The music here has a blend of jazz, soul, and Cuban roots – but all delivered together in a style that's completely unique and without cliche – really showing a maturity in Dayme's vocals since the previous record, and in her overall conception of a song! Instrumentation is by her core quartet, recorded live and openly, in a really unfettered way that instantly matches the spirit of Dayme's vocals too. The whole thing is tremendous – a record that lives up to the truest promise of the Brownswood label – with titles that include "Nangareo", "Porque Tu No Estas", "Yemaya", "Plegaria A La Lupe", "Homenaje", "Para El Amor Cantar", and "As Feridas". A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Nat BirchallStoryteller – A Musical Tribute To Yusef Lateef ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99
A tremendous record from one of our favorite saxophonists of the past decade – the completely sublime, completely wonderful Nat Birchall – a musician who was way ahead of the curve towards spiritual jazz that others have hit in recent years, and one who still does it better than anyone else! The title gives away only part of the story – as Nat's definitely paying tribute to the great Yusef Lateef, particularly the mix of soulful jazz and exoticism in his earlier work – but the overall execution is very much in the best Birchall mode – long-building tracks, really informed by a strong tradition of spiritual energy, and not just in musical form – as the leader blows tenor, soprano, bass clarinet, and handles a range of instruments from around the globe – in the company of Michael Bardon on bass, Andy Hay on drums and percussion, and either Adam Fairhall or John Ellis on piano, depending on the track. A few of the tunes are classics from the vintage Lateef songbook, and Birchall has also seamlessly contributed a few numbers of his own – making for a fantastic double-length set, with titles that include "Tales Of Saba", "Ching Miau", "Salaam Brother Yusef", "Inward Flight", "Brother John", "Not Yet Ornette", "Ringo Oiwake", and "Mashariki" – plus a great version of "Love Theme From Spartacus", a tune that Lateef made his own back in the 60s, with a fantastic reading that's gone on to inspire many. Mid 60s French mod rock from Ronnie Bird – groovy, groovy stuff with a raw and rollicking edge to it without sacrificing any easy, groovy charm! On this early material, he's working very well with some of the Brit Invasion sounds that were sweeping the globe at the time, with some nods to late 50s and early 60s style of rock. He's working with guitarist Mickey Baker on the arrangements and songwriting, bringing the early rock guitar edge to the sound, and titles include "Elle M'Attend", "Je Ne Mens Pas", "Pour Toi", "Fais Attention", "Tout Suel", "Tu Ferais Mieux De Filer" and more. Christmas happens all around the globe, even in spots where the snowfall is light, and a White Christmas is unlikely to happen – and while we're not entirely sure this is the way they celebrate the holiday on the South Beach of Miami, Dio and the Candi Cane Crew try to imagine what such a celebration might sound like! The approach here is electro soul with gentle bass – mostly using familiar Christmas tunes, reworked with a mode that's almost that crossover holiday soul style from the late 80s – but with the inclusion of a few new raps by group members from time to time. Titles include versions of "Frosty The Snowman", "Jingle Bells", "Sleigh Ride", "Last Christmas", "Santa Baby", "Let It Snow", and "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". CD

The first album in more than a few years from Da Lata – a set that has the core group winnowed down to Chris Franck, but which seems to open up the sound even more than before! Everything we've ever loved about Da Lata is in place here – that special sound that filters together bits of jazz and Brazilian elements with a London sort of focus – but there's also a wider globe's worth of musical elements in the mix, and the instrumentation is more live and less programmed – which makes for a warm, wonderful style all the way through! In a way, this might be the record we've always wanted Da Lata to make, and it has us falling in love with them all over again – with Chris Franck on a host of instruments – at the helm of a mighty lineup that features contributions from Mike Patto on keyboards, Matt Cooper on Rhodes, and Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman, Diabel Cissokho, Syren Rivers, and others on vocals. The songs are positive, and soaring with spirit – on titles that include "To B", "Thunder Of Silence", "Oba Lata", "Lunar View", "Sway", "Dakar", "Mentality", and "Memory Man". CD

International Anthem, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
Beautiful solo sounds from Angel Bat Dawid – a Chicago clarinetist who works here with the same inventive spirit as the other contemporary artists on the International Anthem label! By that, we mean that although Angel's music starts in jazz, it quickly becomes something else – as she assembled the record not from a solitary solo performance, but by overdubbing sounds she'd recorded around the globe, and back home in Chicago – mixing her own very beautiful reed lines with a variety of other instrumentation – all recorded on cell phone, which gives the whole thing a wonderfully fresh feel! Don't worry about the album being too gimmicky, or too DIY – as it's got the same appeal as a studio-recorded spiritual session by a larger group – and there's plenty of focus on Dawid's incredible solos on her chosen instrument, with a vibe that's likely to have her rising to the level of clarinet giants like Jimmy Guiffre or John Carter. Titles include "Black Family", "Capetown", "The Oracle", "We Are Starzz", "London", and "What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black". CD

Very cool sounds from Polish keyboardist Krzystof Duda – two long live tracks recorded in the 80s, but with this freewheeling spirit and sense of space that recalls 70s genius by better-known talents like Klaus Schulze or Jean-Michel Jarre! Duda plays a Moog Prodigy, which is especially nice – and has all these loopy lines that are completely wonderful – and also uses a Korg Polysix, Arp string ensemble, and a few other keyboards – but all with a sense of warmth that's very different than some of the leaner, tinnier 80s modes that you might have heard from other parts of the globe at the time. Fall1982 (Hex Enduction Hour/Room To Live/In A Hole/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 6CD ... $46.99
An amazing package – three great albums by The Fall, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hex Enduction Hour – one of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! The jagged lyricism of Mark E Smith is razor-sharp – as is the instrumentation, which is heavy on that trademark noisy guitar from Craig Scanlon, weird keyboards from Marc Riley, and the driving power of the double drummers in the group! The music is every bit as textually explosive as the words on the cover – and titles include "Who Makes The Nazis", "And This Day", "Jawbone & The Air Rifle", "The Classical", "Mere Psued Mag Ed", "Fortress/Deer Park", and the classic "Hip Priest". Is Room To Live the greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". In A Hole is a fantastic double-length live album by The Fall – recorded at a time when the group was at the height of their creative powers! Tracks are pulled from their important early albums and singles, and delivered with a searing intensity that shows just how much the group could hang on to their jagged edge and razor-sharp wit in front of a live audience – especially one on the other side of the globe! Titles include "The Container Drivers", "Fantastic Life", "English Scheme", "Impression Of J Temperance", "Room To Live", "Hip Priest", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Backdrop", "Hard Life In The Country", "Who Makes The Nazis", "Gramme Friday", "Slags Slates Etc", and "Look Know". Box set features a bonus CD with Sessions, Singles, and Soundchecks – including material from live sets in Leeds, Manchester, and London, plus John Peel material from 1981. And another bonus CD with a full live set recorded in Melbourne, in 1982 – 14 tracks in all! CD

Guts bills this set as "an Afro-Tropical experiment" – but to us, the album's just a further expansion of his wonderful talents as a producer – which have really come a long way in just a few years! Guts maybe got his start in hip hop, but he's able to embrace a globe's worth of sound, especially in a project like this – which we might liken to some of the more globally-conscious records by Quantic – although Guts is working here on the Parisian scene, and maybe has even closer access to cross-cultural channels! The amazing full length debut of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a cool combo from the Chicago scene who've been making some big waves around the world over the past few years! The brass-heavy group have a family legacy that links them to the Artistic Heritage Ensemble of Phil Cohran – and an approach to their music that mixes spiritual jazz, deep funk, and elements of New Orleans music too – a really unique style that has earned the group's rare singles some tremendous praise – and which is finally ready to step out fully in this wonderful album! The horns are even harder and heavier than before – honed through some touring around the globe, and brought into focus here beautifully – bristling with energy from the very first note. A funky combo, but one with a real difference – as they seem to find whole new corners of the globe in which to work their magic – almost an imagined space of cultural criss-crossing, all set to some mighty funky bass and drums! The core element here is the guitar – which echoes exotic modes that seem to move from Mexican folk, to contemporary Tuareg sounds, and even a bit of southwest guitar instrumental echo – but all in ways that are very fresh and different, and which also sound quite unusual compared to the usual use of guitar in a funky combo! The first-ever full length set we've seen from Daniel Maunick – an artist who you might know from his remix work as Venom, or for his ties to the Incognito universe – given that Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick is his father! Yet the sound here is definitely Daniel's own – rootsier than some of his remix work, but with the feature future-sounding elements of those tracks too – almost a globe's worth of sonic elements, fused with more contemporary keyboards and beats – providing a great bridge between some of the 12" releases of the Far Out label, and directions they might take in the future. The percussion on some tracks is especially nice – and maybe ties Daniel's music to some of the global house currents at the start of this century – on titles that include "Sombra Do Dragao", "Until The End", "A Vicious Circle", "One Nite Stand", "Red Doves", "Orbitus", "As Light Fades", and "Amnesia Haze". Mauskovic Dance BandMauskovic Dance Band ... LP
Soundway (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
The debut album from the Mauskovic Dance Band – a compelling combo who bring together rhythms from around the globe, then fuse them together in a dark and moody sort of way – often with the kind of early 80s elements you might expect to hear from ESG or Quando Quango! The production is great – with some spare but stunning use of analogue electronics, which almost makes us feel like Martin Hannett's on hand in the studio – while the group themselves work through rhythms in a range of acoustic and programmed modes, often with a nice degree of complexity, yet never in a way that fails to groove! You'll hear lots of different strands of influences going on here, but the group really makes the sound their own – with a unique quality that almost takes us back to Danceteria, circa 1983. Titles include "Percussione & Spazio Sounds", "Alto In Vacanca", "Late Night People", "Space Drum Machine", "Drinks By The Sea", "Dance Place Garage", and "It's The Wrong Goodie". ✨✧ Lloyd Miller/Press Keys QuartetOriental Jazz ... LP
East West/Now Again, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... On December 6, 2019
Possibly the greatest album ever from the enigmatic Lloyd Miller – his legendary Oriental Jazz album from the late 60s, and a really wonderful blend of musical modes! Some of the tracks here really stretch out in the Eastern promise of the title – mixing jazz rhythms with santur, oud, zarb, and other unusual instrumentation – all in ways that are modal one minute, meditative the next, and which even echo gamelon styles on one tune! Other tracks are a bit straighter in the instrumentation, but still sparkle with a globe's worth of influence – Lloyd on piano, carving out sounds in a very unusual way! Some tracks are by Miller's trio, other by a quartet that features him, but which is led by pianist/trombonist Press Keys. Titles include "Hue Wail", "Pentalogic", "Tanya", "Natanie", "Guzel Gozler", "Prelude In The Iranian Mode Shur", "Impression Of Bhairava Raga", and "Njonja Mirah & Yona". Some of these tracks have appeared on Millers Oriental Jazz CD compilation – but others haven't – and this is his reissue of the full original album! LP, Vinyl record album

Nana MouskouriVoice Of Greece (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $9.99
A huge amount of early work from Nana Mouskouri – a singer who looked a bit like a librarian, with glasses to match – but who managed to catapult to huge global fame in the 60s and 70s! Part of that fame was due to the fact that Nana was not only a great singer, but also graced with a strong command of other languages too – which helped her score big on charts all over Europe, and in other parts of the globe. Yet this set focuses strongly on Mouskouri's earliest work in her native Greece – with lyrics all in Greek, which may come as quite a surprise if you only know some of Nana's bigger songs in French, English, or other languages. The backings often have a nicely understated quality – some folkloric elements hitting more modern arrangements, sometimes with a great current of jazz that really lights things up – and the 3CD package features 77 tracks in all, complete with notes – selections from albums that include The Voice Of Greece, Epitaphois & More Songs Of Her Homeland, Greece Dreamland Of Desire, and Pashalies Mesa Apo Tin Nekri Gi. Now Again, 2004. Used ... $6.99
A damn funky little album – and one of the best Stones Throw albums of the past 20 years! Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates – even some of the offbeat psych and rock that the label has reissued from around the globe! There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their work – taking the core instrumentation of funky drums, choppy guitars, smoking keyboards, and soulful sax – and pushing it out with a Stark Reality-ish vibe that really makes the group stand out from the rest of the deep funk underground! The album's a brilliant debut that we'll be digging for years – and it also feature appearances by Malcolm Catto, and members of Funk Inc, Poets Of Rhythm, and The LA Carnival! Titles include "Sticks & Stones", "Sucker Punch", "The Buzzard", "Double Dutch", "Wild Flowers", "Tall Dry Grass", "Fuzz & Them", and "The Shadows Of Leaves". Expanded version features 9 more bonus tracks – including "Raga Doll", "Afro Som", "Hurricane Malcolm", "Hello I'm Inside Out", "Sticks Dub", and "Attack Of The Killer Penguins". CD

An important early album from the Rova Quartet – one that earns the diplomacy in its title in two different ways – first because it features recordings from a tour that the group made to Soviet bloc nations during the cold war years – and second because it was one of their first records to get wide circulation, and helped act as a calling card for their unique sound around the globe! The group are at their early creative peak here – with John Raskin on baritone, alto, soprano, and clarinet; Larry Ochs on tenor and sopranino; Andrew Vogt on alto, soprano, sopranino, and flutes; and Bruce Ackley on soprano and clarinet – all visionary players coming together with no other accompaniment at all – and really blowing us away especially on the longer tracks that sustain their ideas beautifully. Fantastic sounds and shapes throughout – and titles include "The Throes", "Flamingo Horizons", "Paint Another Take Of The Shootpop", and "Detente Or Detroit". CD

Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. A very unique project from musician/filmmaker/theorist Michael Snow – not sounds of his own creation, but more of a collage of unusual music from around the globe – presented in a spirit that definitely fits the title! Oddly, when the record was created in the 80s, it was also seen as a swan song to the vinyl LP too – something that never came to pass – and, as well, efforts like this have only continued more strongly in recent years – maybe making Snow's efforts here more of a "beginning", than any sort of document of the end! Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy 2CDs ... $10.99 16.99
The most ambitious work to date from Ken Vandermark's Territory Band – a larger-than-usual ensemble that ranks with some of the great improvising orchestras of the 70s – like the London Jazz Composers Orchestra or the Globe Unity group! For the project, Vandermark pulled together a host of talents from the Chicago and European scenes – including Jeb Bishop on trombone, Axel Doerner on trumpet, Kent Kessler on bass, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Dave Rempis on saxes, Jim Baker on piano, and Paul Lytton and Paal Nilssen-Love on percussion. The tracks are strongly concerned with sound and texture, and have a fair degree of space and contemplative moments – showing Vandermark as an increasingly complex composer, but one that still manages to make a project like this pulsate with the energy of his smaller group work. VP, Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 29.98
A much-needed look at the mighty talents of one of the key forces of the dancehall explosion at the end of the 80s – producer Bobby Digital, whose work in the studio helped Jamaican music find a whole new audience in the decade to come! Bobby's ear for rhythms and basslines is fantastic – and his bold, stripped-down approach to production really helped reggae capture some of the best elements introduced by the hip hop generation – particularly the very strong bottom end that helped the music find a much more relevant sound in the 90s, which in turn led to a huge new audience around the globe! Yet these tracks aren't the mainstream dancehall of the time – as many numbers here were the sorts of indie singles that circulated underground before the music broke bigger on major labels. This first CD features loads of great early Bobby Digital production – 24 titles that include "Dem Bow" by Shabba Ranks, "How Them Flex" by Cocoa Tea & Prezident Brown, "Inaculator" by Daddy Lizard, "Play Play Girl" by Johnny Osbourne, "Sitting In The Back Seat" by Glen Ricks, "Original Full Up" by Leroy Sibbles & Beenie Man, "Sweet Jamaica" by Tony Rebel, "Tek Him" by Mad Cobra, and "Solid As A Rock" by Sizzla. A 50th anniversary celebration of Italy's Capital Radio in 1968 – a set that combines familiar English rock of the late 60s with a huge amount of Italian pop as well! The mix of modes is great – and the 2CD package goes a long way towards illustrating the way that non-Anglo countries on the European scene were served some of the hipper British and American music of the time, in ways that effortlessly blend with more homegrown efforts of the era. Given that American radio was almost completely closed to non-English language tunes, there's a generosity to the spirit here that's really great – and which goes to show why Anglo rock dominated the globe so much in the following decade. Easily the greatest collection of Colombian grooves we've ever seen – a beautifully-done package from Soundway Records, and one that lives up to the high standard we first found in their compilations of African and Panamanian funk! This time around, the focus is on the legendary Discos Fuentes – a label as important to Latin music in Columbia as Fania was in New York – but also one that's got a much richer history, and much deeper range of grooves! The tunes here are all from the 60s and 70s – and the set focuses on Fuentes tunes that have a current appeal to crate-diggers around the globe – the kind of hard-edged Latin cuts that are finally getting some respect after years of New York dominance on the record collecting scene. Styles here range from salsa to cumbia to descarga modes – and the collection is far different than any previous Fuentes compilations that have hit the market – thanks to a focus on the harder side of the groove! The package features great images of classic Fuentes releases, notes on each track, and even a great essay about shopping for vinyl in Cali – the mecca for Colombian collectors. 2LP set features 17 tracks that include "Salsa Na Ma" by Fruko Y Sus Tesos, "Hong Kong" by Michi Sarmiento Y Sus Bravos, "Cumbia En Do Menor" by Lito Barrientos, "Tifit Hayed" by Wganda Kenya, "La Samaria" by Orquesta Nunez, "Cumbiamba" by El Sexteto Miramar, "Las Calenas Son Como Las Flores" by The Latin Brothers, "La Picua" by Pedro Laza Y Sus Pelayeros, "Improvisando" by Fruko, "El Mondongo" by Los Corraleros De Majagual, "Pacifico" by Afrosound, "La Piojosa" by La Sonora Cienaguera, and "La Pata Y El Pato" by Climaco Sarmiento. This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. Ace (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 32.99
A wild assortment of music from an equally wild source – a BBC Radio program hosted by Jarvis Cocker, presented on Sunday mornings as a way to relax and reach some sort of deeper spiritual consciousness! The show was never churchy – but maybe an attempt to find a new sort of inner peace during the modern age – with a selection of songs in a really great range, all linked by the dry wit and understated presence of Cocker as an announcer. This set brings together key tracks from the early years of the show – music that spans decades, and runs from jazz vocal numbers, to electronic music nuggets, 70s AOR, underground folk, and a number of more recent tracks that show that Jarvis has continually had his ear on the rock underground around the globe. The blend is incredibly hard to describe in words, but a delight to hear on record – and the whole thing comes with detailed notes on the track selections from Cocker himself. Titles include "Snowed In" by Tim Rose, "Day Glo" by Serafina Steer, "Cold Rain" by Alternative TV, "Won't That Be A Happy Time" by Joseph & Louis Spence, "Old Molly Metcalfe" by Jake Thackery, "Waters Of March" by Art Garfunkel, "It's A Quiet Thing" by Morgana King, "Rock Intro" by Miranda July, "After The Gold Rush" by The King's Singers, "Invasion Muzak" by John Baker, "True Love Will Find You In The End" by Headless Heroes, "Cars" by The Katzenjammers, "Crazy In Love" by Antony & The Johnsons, "Don't Wait Too Long" by Bob Welch, "Baltimore" by Nina Simone, "December" by David Cain/Derek Boswell, "Gynopedie No 3" by Camarata Contemporary Chamber Group, and "The Interrogative Mood" by Jarvis Cocker & David Cunningham. Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A spacious second set from British/Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed – a record that features dedications to feminist inspirations on every single track – but which has a soaring, righteous quality that marks Ahmed as an inspirational force of her own! The songs are long, and the music is rich in textural elements – strong trumpet solos from the leader, but also a globe's worth of contributions from other members of the contemporary London scene in which Ahmed's been making waves for the past few years – with a level of expression that maybe matches some of our favorite recent jazz releases on the Brownswood label! If you know the charms of the London scene in recent years, you'll have plenty to love here – and will find yourself adding Yazz to a list of artists to keep your ears on. And if you don't, this album's a great place to begin your musical discovery – on titles that include "Ruby Bridges", "Barbara", "Lahan Al-Mansour", "One Girl Among Many", and "Deeds Not Words". CD

Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

GAD (Poland), 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soaring disco grooves from behind the Iron Curtain – proof that the sound of Studio 54 was touching all corners of the globe in the 70s! The disco here isn't really the familiar sort, though – as the music was recorded by a studio project – a bit like sound library funk from Italy and France, with a core funk instrumental approach at the heart of the tracks – sped up with bits of strings, fast percussion, and occasional chorus vocals! The sound is almost a bit like some of the cool German easy material of the period – particularly that of their own sound library world – almost an echo of popular Euro disco styles, but never with a need to hit the charts – and usually instrumental. CD Features all the material from two albums issued by Polskie Nagrania – Swiatla Dyskoteki and Discoland – and titles include "Mr Verdi", "Bongo Boy", "Argentina", "Boogie Moogie", "Safari", "Oczy Czarne", "Discoland", "Zeppelin", "Aviator", "Monsun", and "Alfred Wsrod Ptakow". Inimitable early greatness from Faust – a big step from from the freer early work into more of a song-based structure – yet one that still has things sounding pretty darn wild overall! The music is incredibly hypnotic – and maybe even more impressive in the space of a bit more structure – and the album is one the great groundbreaking albums of the era – a landmark not just in German prog and experimental music, but also one from the farthest reaches of the underground all over the globe! Heavy percussion mixes with melodic moments all in a wonderfully eerie blend – and titles include "No Harm", "So Far", "Picnic On A Frozen River", "On The Way To Abamae", and "It's A Rainy Day Sunshine Girl". Sublime work from Billy Harper – one of those rare Japanese-only sessions he cut in the 70s – really tremendous stuff that blows away most of his other (already excellent) work from other points around the globe! Billy's blowing some really mighty tenor here – at a level that makes him one of the most righteous, spiritual players of the 70s – a player we'd rank right up there with John Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders at their best, working here with a bold musical vision that's all his own! The long tracks really give Harper plenty of room to stretch out – and he never goes too far out, even with the freedom – hanging tight to some tremendous rhythms from Mickey Tucker on piano, Gregg Maker on bass, and Malcolm Pinson on drums – and getting great help from trumpeter Everett Hollins in the frontline. Titles include "Love On The Sudan", "Priestess", and "Awakening". LP, Vinyl record album

Marley's star had already been rising by the time of this set – but this album helped cement both his lasting power, and the worldwide influence of the music that Jamaica was bringing forth – served up by a sharp lineup that includes Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, Carlton Barrett on drums and percussion, Touter on piano and organ, and Al Anderson on lead guitar – as well as soulful backing from the I-Threes. A good chunk of the record was recorded at Harry J's – not as tightly as some of the later Island Records material – and titles include the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". A really great album from these two giants of the Ornette Coleman generation – and one that also shows just how much space both musicians had traversed since the 60s! Don Cherry plays his familiar pocket trumpet in the lead, but also brings in piano, melodica, organ, and doussn gouni – creating this beautiful sonic palette next to the very creative work on drums and percussion from Blackwell! Both musicians improvise in rhythm-driven modes that seem to have their roots in Ornette's original quartet with the pair – but there's also open ears to a globe's worth of instrumental elements, and decades of new sound shapes as well. Funky funky Thailand – just about the only 70s funk group we've ever seen from that part of the globe, and a great one at that! The Impossibles work in a tightly-crafted ensemble funk style that's clearly influenced by Kool & The Gang – but which also has the group hitting some well-polished notes on a few of the album's vocal numbers – in a totally cool groove that's got plenty of hard funky riffs at the bottom, sweet horns in the middle, and some great compressed pop vocals on the top! The album's a real lost treasure – one that we've never seen on this side of the Atlantic – and was oddly recorded and issued in Sweden in the mid 70s! But this album is way more than just a musical oddity – as it's super-funky all the way through, with a level of quality that will have it at the top of your crates for a long, long time! The album's probably closest to a jazz fusion album – as there's no vocals, and instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic – with lots of keyboard lines throughout, peppered with guitar, alto, tenor, and trumpet – yet the rhythmic changes are very different from familiar fusion, as is the role of the instruments – which don't always get solo space, because they're all so tied to the groove! The book's a lifetime labor of love for Freddy Fresh – an extensive discography that's got to be the most definitive book on early hip hop we've ever seen! The vintage of the titles listed in the book is 1979 to 1994 – and as Freddy says in the preface, there's a few records listed that may fall outside the rap genre or that time span, including some disco and electro numbers – but that's okay by us! The book's got tons of label scans – plus entries listed alphabetically by label and then in order by catalog number – and this exhaustive project reads like your dream want-list for years and years to come. Plus, in addition to the label and record listings, there's appendices with old school flyer scans, top picks from DJs and producers all over the globe, lists of resources for finding records and Freddy's own personal lists for records, including his "5 star" rated records, and songs and singles arranged by topic. An absolute must-have for any die hard fan of hip hop! The complete Mole Trilogy from The Residents – a complicated longform work that dominated most of their recordings in the mid 80s, and which created a fair bit of bonus material and sidebar songs – all of which are compiled in this massive 6CD set! The Mole storyline is a very loose narrative used to give a bit more structure than usual to the group's offbeat mix of electronics, processed vocals, and all the strange instrumentation that made them a key bridge between academic experiments of the postwar years, and more progressive work to come in the postpunk scenes around the globe. The group always hid their identity, and were perhaps even more hidden than usual behind this long storyline – while still spinning out the kinds of sounds that always held their audiences rapt, and kept their listeners guessing. The world of moogy music first exploded back in the late 60s – when artists like Bruce Haack, Perry-Kingsley, and others were making all these wonderfully weird records that featured heavy analogue electronics and other playful elements! By the 80s, most of that music had gone away – some migrating to the world of new age, others turning more mainstream – yet up in Eugene, Oregon, there was a small scene that continued the electronic experiments of years past – work that sounded very different than most of the darker cold wave and industrial sounds that were popping up at other points on the globe. This collection offers up a long-overdue look at that scene – and features work from a collective of artists who really continue some of the hippest traditions of the genre – from the early records that Bruce Haack made with Miss Nelson, to some of the weird Mort Garson productions, even to some of the more wigged-out French psych/electronics of the 70s. Some of these tracks have vocals, some are instrumental – and they're all nicely "switched on" – providing a great bridge between the world of Walter Carlos and the Stereolab generation to come. Stu Mindeman's really opening the door this time around – letting in an array of singers who include Kurt Elling, Francesca Ancarola, and Ana Tijoux – as well as guest performers Makaya McCraven on drums, Miguel Zenon on alto, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Matt Ullery on bass! The door's also open to a great globe's worth of influences, too – especially in the songs that feature Ancarola and Tijoux – who fit seamlessly with the warm glow that comes from Stu's flowing lines on piano and organ, which are set up in a core combo with excellent work from Geoff Bradfield on tenor and bass clarinet! There's a range of fresh ideas running through the music – a real globe-unifying set – and the tracks with Elling are especially nice. Titles "Casi Casi", "El Aparecido", "Thousand Stars", "What Word", "La Casa De Al Lado", "La Rueda", and "Sin Sentido". CD

✨✧ Moses Taiwa MolelekwaGenes & Spirits ... LP
MELT 2000/Matsuli (UK), Late 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked bit of spiritual jazz from the 90s – issued at a time when the South African scene was really hitting a new level of creative energy, even though much of it wasn't always recognized by audiences over here in the US! The set's got this powerful fusion of ideas – older South African jazz styles mixed with new inspirations from other points of the globe, especially London – as keyboardist Moses Taiwa Molelekwa plays piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards in shifting settings that are often very heavy on percussion and bass, used in differing ways that evoke a more global sense of rhythm. The album also features work from Dennis Rollins on trombone, Frances Reardon on bass clarinet, Khaya Mahlangu on soprano sax, Byron Wallen on trumpet, Rowland Sutherland on flute, and Lawrence Matshiza on guitar – and there's a bit of vocals on the record from Flora Purim, Max Mntambo, and Lungiswa Plaatijes, plus a bit from Moses himself. The vibe is somewhere in the territory of some of the excellent Sheer Sound jazz releases at the end of the last century – and titles include "Spirits Of Tembisa", "Sogra", "Genes & Spirits", "Tsala", "Wa Mpona", "Kwaze Kwangcono", "Rapela", "Dance To Africa", and "Ntatemoholo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nappy RootsWooden Leather ... CD
Atlantic, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nappy Roots hugely improves on the debut with album number two! The debut was a bit candy-coated for our hip hop taste, but the Nappy Roots take a pretty surprising deep/dark turn on Wooden Leather. We wouldn't have thought to include these guys with our favorite Dirty South crews before, but damned if this isn't our most pleasant pop-skewing hip hop album since Black Eyed Peas dropped Elephunk a couple months ago! Tracks include "Good God Almighty", "Nappy Roots Day", Push On", "Roun' The Globe", "Lac Dogs & Hog", "Sick & Tired", "These Walls", "War/Peace" and more. CD

✨✧ RovaSaxophone Diplomacy ... LP
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1983. Very Good 2LP ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the catalog insert, but missing postcards. Cover has some wear on the spine, with some peeled spots tape and pen on the back.)

✨✧ Hiroshi Uchikado & Akira MizumotoRecord Buyers Diary (paperback) ... Book
Rittor (Japan), 2006. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
It's no secret to crate diggers that Japanese record buyers really take their job seriously – and now here's a book to finally prove it! Record Buyer's Diary was put together by two Japanese record buyers as they travel the globe in search of the music they love – and it features photos, addresses, and other images from their trip – plus longer writings about their experiences in Japanese. If you don't understand the language, you might miss some of the content – but the book's still pretty darn cool in the way it offers up snippets from their trip, including photos of some great stores, maps, restaurants, and even some price tags! These guys aren't shy about sharing their secrets – and the book lists stores in Los Angeles, England, Germany, Seattle, and Vancouver. As we say, the bulk of it is in Japanese, but there's still plenty you can learn even if you don't understand the language! 215 pages, softcover, in color and black and white. Book
