Gizelle Smith & The Mighty MocambosThis Is Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos (2LP version – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Legere (France), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A stunning bit of funky female soul from the first decade of the century – a set that was sometimes overlooked on the global scene, but which easily matches the energy and punch of some of the more famous artists on labels like Daptone and Big Crown! Gizelle Smith is a hell of a singer – actually skilled with a deeply soulful approach, and not just reaching for a retro mode – and the Mighty Mocambos are as funky here as on any of their great funky 45s – a razor-sharp group who give Smith just the right backing to send things over the top! Titles include "Hold Fast", "Magic Time Machine", "Working Woman", "Coffee High", "Free Vibes", "Love Alarm", "Gonna Get You", and "Snake Charmer". 2LP version adds in 11 bonus tracks – some instrumental "part 2" tracks, remixes, and more! LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the original LP with a bonus disc that includes unreleased tracks, radio sessions, live recordings, and remixes!)

Gizelle SmithRevealing ... CD
Jalepeno (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
Gizelle Smith changes things up here nicely – moving past her roots as a deep funk singer with the Mighty Mocambos, and maybe growing into a more fully-formed role as a classic 70s-styled soul artist! The backings are funky, rich, and full – shifting in mood and complexity, at a level that has Gizelle stepping forth strongly like some hip 70s funk singer – maybe in the territory of Gwen McCrae or Nona Hendryx, given the style of the tunes – which often have currents of more sophisticated modes, and move things well past backings by a straight funky combo! Titles include "King Of The Mountain", "Agony Road", "Superstar", "Better Remember", "Riot Cars", "Miss World", and "Three Tiny Seeds". CD
