✨✧ Aretha FranklinYoung, Gifted, & Black (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! There's a balance here that makes the record one of the deepest that Franklin ever recorded for Atlantic – lots of larger Arif Mardin touches, but also some raw moments that really round things out – on titles that include Aretha's classic take on the Weldon Irvine/Nina Simone tune "Young Gifted & Black", the funky classic "Rock Steady", the wonderful mellow groover "Day Dreaming", the hit "Brand New Me", and the strangely compelling "First Snow In Kokomo" – plus other titles that include "All The King's Horses", "Oh Me Oh My", "Border Song", "Didn't I Blow Your Mind", "April Fools", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "The Long & Winding Road". Akofa AkoussahAkofa Akoussah ... CD
Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

Aretha FranklinOh Me Oh My – Aretha Live In Philly 1972 (orange & yellow vinyl pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. New Copy 2LP ... On July 17, 2021
❔
A gem of a live performance from Aretha Franklin – recorded at the NATRA convention in Philly in 1972, and issued here for the first time ever! The setting is a bit more intimate than the usual Franklin gig of the time, and the feel is a bit more mature as well – showing that new level of sophistication that Aretha was hitting in her studio sets for Atlantic at the time, undercurrents of jazz mixed in with the soul – in ways that really update and change over some of the more familiar tunes in the performance. The backing group feels somewhat large, but has more than enough grit to keep things going – and the sound quality is surprisingly great, considering that these tapes sat up on a shelf in the Atlantic vaults for over 30 years. Titles include "April Fools", "Spanish Harlem", "Day Dreaming/Think", "This Girl's In Love With You", "2001/Rock Steady", "Young Gifted & Black", "Oh Me Oh My", "That's The Way I Feel About Cha", "Respect", and "Chain Of Fools/See Saw". (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, July 17. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Saturday, July 17. It will not be pre-sold or reserved in any way. However, after noon on July 17 we will offer up whatever we have left for sale online.) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Donny HathawayDonny Hathaway Collection ... CD
Atlantic, 1970s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Pure genius from Donny Hathaway – a 70s soul giant who burned brightly for just a few years, then was taken away from us all too soon! In our book, Donny is every bit a giant of the decade as Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield – and you'll hear work here that easily matches the best of both, topped with some of the musical complexity that made Hathaway such a budding talent in the studio – ready to give his gifts to so many, and be shared with the world! Every cut's a gem – and titles include "The Ghetto", "Giving Up", "Someday We'll Be Free", "To Be Young Gifted & Black", "A Song For You", "What's Going On", and "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" – as well as Hathaway's Holiday classic "This Christmas" – maybe the tune that most people know the best. Also features famous duets with Roberta Flack on "Where Is The Love", "The Closer I Get To You", "You've Got A Friend", "Back Together Again", and "You Are My Heaven". CD

Reggae StringsReggae Strings/Reggae Strings Vol 2 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $16.99 24.99
A great pair of records – plus a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the debut Reggae Strings album – one of the most unique albums on the Trojan label during the 70s – and a surprising hit for the company too! The approach here is very unusual – as the cuts here all are earlier Trojan vocal singles that had larger backings provided by UK maestro Johnny Archey – then stripped of their vocals and presented as instrumentals! As you'd guess by the names, Archey adds strings to the Kingston rhythms – but the approach is surprisingly nice – almost like early reggae rhythms coming into play with the best of the UK sound library generation – with results that are as groovy as that description might imply. Titles include "World Without Love", "One Woman", "Let The Man Go", "Leaving Rome", "Pantomime", "God Bless The Children", and "Young Gifted & Black". Reggae Strings 2 is a set that follows nicely on the first Reggae Strings effort on Trojan – and, like the first, a package that features older vocal tracks with the lyrics stripped away, all to provide a focus on the fuller orchestrations of Johnny Archey! The approach is cooler than you'd guess – lots of nice charts that bring a bit of 70s smooth to the sound of Trojan – almost like Barry White was recording down in Kingston – on titles that include "How Many Times", "Jump Hallelujah", "Strange World", "It's Too Late", "Tell It Like It Is", "Scientist", "Jamaica Jerkoff", and "Sweet Bitter Love". 2CD set features 25 bonus tracks too – all the original vocal tunes used for the strings versions – with work by Bob Andy, The Dynamites, Greyhound, Bob & Marcia, Nicky Thomas, Danny Ray, Merlene Webber, The Uniques, Pioneers, Winston Groovy, and others! 51 tracks in all – and a nice set of notes. ✨✧ Steve ArringtonDown To The Lowest Terms – The Soul Sessions ... LP
Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Steve Arrington's got a long long legacy in soul music – one that goes back to his late 70s work on Slave – but he also sounds completely contemporary here, working in collaboration with a whole host of producers who were no doubt influenced by his creations of the past, and help Arrington find a whole new vibe in his music! Tunes are often spare, and served up in a blend of vocals, beats, keyboards, and guitar – yet all elements are given some cool, crispy twists and turns through a host of hip hop elements and other contemporary modes – but all at a level that only seems to bring new live to Arrington's music, and not overwhelm it. The set features work from Mndsgn, Gifted & Blessed, J Rocc, Knxwledge, Devin Morrison, and others – and titles include "Love Knows", "Keep Dreamin", "Soulful I Need That In My Life", "Make A Difference", "Joys Of Love", "It's Alright", "Make Ya Say Yie", "You're Not Ready", "Good Mood", and "Work On It". ✨✧ BangMother/Bow To The King ... LP
Capitol, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bang have opened up their lineup a bit since their tight debut as a trio – but the core energy of their music is very firmly still in place – right down to the excellent sound they get recording down at the Criteria Studios in Miami! These guys are one of those groups that should have been huge – tight, focused, and incredibly hard-rocking – gifted with a great ear for penning a tune, and a strong ability to find really fresh formations from the familiar lineup of guitar, bass, and drums! There's a open, honest quality to the album that makes it wonderfully free from cliche – as does the lack of any posturing on any group members either a sense of unified cohesion that some of their contemporaries might have taken as a model. Drummer Tony D'Iorio isn't in the group this time around, but he's still helping write the tunes – and the drums are taken over by the equally strong Duris Maxwell and Bruce Gary. Some tracks also feature some surprising soulful backing vocals by singers Donny Gerrard, Clydie King, and Vanetta Fields – and titles include "Mother", "Humble", "Idealist Realist", "Bow To The King", "Tomorrow", and "Feel The Hurt". Shanachie, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
Timeless soul from Maysa – who here lends her sweet molasses vocals to numbers made famous by Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, The Isley Brothers, Chaka Khan, The Stylistics, Roberta Flack and others! Maysa fully employs the sophisticated mellow soul approach on this set – befitting the material quite grandly with her sultry vocals, and tight band providing laidback keys, snapping drums & percussion, and some jazzy smooth horns and flute in spots. The most mature outing yet from the gifted vocalist whose roots helped plant Incognito! Tracks include "Wishing On A Star", "Don't Say Goodnight", "All I Do", "Love Won't Let Me Wait", "Come Go With Me", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "Playing Your Game, Baby", "Love Comes Easy", "Any Love" and "The First Time (I Ever Saw Your Face)". ✨✧ Full Experience/Candy McKenzie/AuraLee Scratch Perry Presents The Full Experience (Lee Scratch Perry Presents Candy McKenzie/Full Experience/bonus track) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of unusual Lee Perry projects from the mid 70s – both of which feature a female singer in the lead, and give us a whole new side of Perry's talents! The first half of the set features material from an album issued under the title Lee Scratch Perry Presents Candy McKenzie – a set that features lead vocals from London singer Candy McKenzie, who's got a much deeper soul approach than some of her Jamaican contemporaries – a mode that's sometimes got the sweeter styles that would end up in the lovers rock years, but which also has a wider range that almost has Candy stretching out like a straighter soul singer – on titles that include "Walking In The Sun", "Disco Fits", "Breakfast In Bed", "When The Big Say", "Tell Me A Lie", "Keep Him Strong", and "Jah Knows". Next up is material from the Full Experience sessions – a record that has South African singer Aura working with Lee Scratch Perry, in a style that's got more of the deeper, dubbier elements that Scratch was helping revolutionize at the time! The tunes are rich and righteous, and have all these great little instrumental and production twists – which only makes the lead vocals sound even cooler overall. Titles include "Young Gifted & Broke", "Can't See You", "At Midnite", "Full Experience", and "Nar Soh So It Stay". CD features the bonus track "Disco Devil" – presented in its 12" mix! CD

✨✧ Alvin QueenOP – A Tribute To Oscar Peterson ... LP
Stunt (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tribute to the late Oscar Peterson – but one that may well smoke more than any recording by the man himself – thanks to rock-solid work on drums from the great Alvin Queen! Queen's spent most of his life away from these shores, but he continues to blow us away with the inventiveness of his approach – a style that's subtle, but which always has that little "something extra" that can make one jazz album stand out from the next – as is definitely the case here! Peterson's position in the trio is handed by Danish pianist Zier Romme Larsen – a gifted player with a nice balance between lyricism and groove – and the bass in the trio is from Ida Hvid, a contemporary of Larsen. Titles include Peterson originals – "Sushi", "Cake Walk", "Wheatland", "Jesus Christ Lies Here Tonight", "The Last Supper", and "When Summer Comes". LP, Vinyl record album
