Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". Michael ThomasEvent Horizon ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 24.90
Not the first album we've heard from saxophonist Michael Thomas, but a record that definitely has us looking at his music all over again – thanks to a double-length collection of wonderfully extended tunes – on which Thomas really runs with bold, open energy on the alto sax! The group here has no piano – just the trumpet of Jason Palmer in the frontline, plus bass from Hans Glawischnig and drums from Johnathan Blake – two rhythm players who bring plenty to the table, but sometimes like to let the horns to the swinging – which Thomas and Palmer do in these nicely blocky passages of sound. All tunes are originals by the leader – and titles include "Fox & Cat", "Dr Teeth", "Framework", "Chant", "Underground", "Event Horizon", and "Distance". CD

Le ScottLe Scott's Post Bop Opera ... LP
Theatre For The Evolving Arts, Late 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99
A wild and wonderful hippy theatrical approach to jazz! The tracks are kind of theatrical interpretations of jazz work by Charles Mingus, Yusef Lateef, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, and others – performed by a jazz group that includes trumpeter Wallace Roney, flautist Le Scott, and a number of different vocalists under the direction of Marie Goodman Hunter. Tracks are whimsical versions of familiar jazz numbers – like "Giant Steps", "Pithecanthropus Erectus", "Solar", "Peace", and "St Thomas" – plus a few others that deal with jazz themes – like "L'Ornette In The Sky" and "Nightime In The Craters". All titles feature jazz playing with some spoken bits and sung bits – kind of in the mode of some of the more ambitious soul jazz expressions of the 70s – but not as soulful, and a bit goofy at times. Cecilia StalinI Am (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Step Like A Giant (Sweden), 2020. New Copy ... $24.99
It's been awhile since we last heard from Cecilia Stalin, but the singer's still got everything in place that made us love her so much in the first place – those strong vocals that first emerged in Koop, then really took shape once she started writing more of her own songs! The album's got Stalin coming across as much as jazz singer as a soul vocalist – and the tunes are all great, with some complex rhythm parts at points, and more straightforward grooves at others – always touched by the open, personal lyrics that make a rare few from Cecilia's generation still sound so great after all these years. Backing is nice and jazzy – with lots of Fender Rhodes – and titles include "Released", "Brave", "Sungod", "Grace Of You", "Didn't You Know", and "B Song". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with a signed thank you from Cecilia too!)
