✨✧ Giant CrabCool It – Helios (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Uni/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really wild little record from the Uni Records label at the end of the 60s – and that's saying a lot, given that Uni was putting out plenty of wild records at the time! Giant Crab have this style that mixes psych with sunshine pop – woven in this amazing blend of sounds, over the course of a surprising 16 tracks on the set – tunes that are all short, but pack plenty in the mix – with lots of work on 12 string guitar, keyboards, saxes, and harmony vocals – often brought together with some great effects and studio touches too! The arrangements are superb – showing a wider musical vision, but without losing the feel of the group at the core – and titles include "What Became Of Yesterday's Hero", "Don't Jump To Conclusions", "Help Yourself", "Trust Somebody", "Hello Yesterday", "Cool It", "The Invasion Of Helios", "I Don't Want To Live This Way", and "Walking In Different Circles". ✨✧ Giant StepGiant On The Move (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Strawberry Rain, 1976. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A set that's definitely a giant on the move – a heavy, hard rocker from the Indonesian scene – full of freak and fuzz, in this fantastic blend of psych elements and progressive jamming! The group are fantastic – speaking plenty with the guitar of Benny Soebardja, who also sings – but maybe lets the voice of his fuzz do the main work of the tracks – next to heavy drums, bass, and this very cool keyboard that often gets all weird and moogy! The original vinyl release only had four songs, and this pressing includes the material that only saw the light of day on the cassette release back in the 70s – nine smoking titles that include "Farewell Today", "Liar", "Giant On The Move", "Decision", "Illusion Way", "So Long", and "Air Pollution". John ColtraneGiant Steps (2CD 60th Anniversary Edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic, 1959. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
A true giant step for John Coltrane – and one of the first albums to really showcase his talent as a writer – and his amazing ability for penning some of the most soulful, spiritual themes in jazz! Apart from the well-known title cut, the record's filled with other Coltrane classics – key early readings of "Naima", "Cousin Mary", "Mr PC", "Spiral", and "Syeeda's Song Flute" – all showing a new sense of timing, phrasing, and pacing in jazz – one that would go on to have a huge impact on players in the 70s generation! The group here is relatively straight – Tommy Flanagan or Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – but the players have never sounded better, and really match Coltrane's sense of power and imagination on these legendary tracks! Great 2CD version – with a completely new mastering of the record, bonus notes, and a full set of unreleased outtakes and alternates – including "Naima (alt)", "Like Sonny (alt)", "Count Down (alt)", "Syeeda's Song Flute (alt)", "Giant Steps (incomplete alt take 1)", and two more takes of "Giant Steps". ✨✧ Johnny GriffinLittle Giant ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard bop" was coined for – sharp-edged jazz at its best – informed strongly by earlier bop and modern modes, but also played with a deeper dose of soul overall. The six players come together perfectly throughout – working with a tightness that matches most Blue Note work of the time – and titles are a great set of tracks that includes 3 by Chicago pianist Norman Simmons, and 1 by the great Babs Gonzales. Tunes include "Olive Refractions", "The Message", "Lonely One", "Playmates", and "63rd Street Theme". CD

Don SebeskyGiant Box ... LP
CTI, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Box Set ... $19.99
One of the most ambitious albums on CTI – a very large project in which Don Sebesky seems to work with just about everyone else who recorded for the label! The Giant Box title is apt – as the record originally came packaged in a cardboard box – room enough to hold the 2 records that comprised it, all the long tunes on the set, and the huge array of cast who helped out on the project. Players include Sebesky on organ, piano, and electric piano – plus Baws, Joe Farrell, Paul Desmond, and many others. There's some sweet vocal backgrounds on the set – by Jackie & Roy, Lani Groves, and Tasha Thomas – and titles include "Vocalise", "Semi Tough", "Firebird/Birds Of Fire", "Free As A Bird", and "Song To A Seagul". Great stuff – with bits of funk, jazz, and ambitious arrangements – all filtered into the cool CTI sound! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Horace TapscottGiant Is Awakened ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album – one of the few rare early sides cut by pianist Horace Tapscott, a seminal figure in the LA underground of the 60s and 70s! The record is as pure Tapscott as you could ever get – experimental, but not too free; spiritual, but never too sappy; progressively political, but never overwrought – and Tapscott is playing with a strong quintet that includes Black Arthur Blythe on alto, David Bryant and Walter Savage on bass, and Everett Brown on drums. The lineup is great – and Blythe is a real revelation, with a tone and style that's different than some of his later work, but equally soulful – and the use of two basses makes for some wonderful rhythmic elements that really drive the modal energy of the music. The set includes an important early version of "The Dark Tree" – a modal groover that's one of Tapscott's lasting legacies – plus the tunes "Niger's Theme", "For Fats", and "The Giant Is Awakened". ✨✧ Tommy FlanaganGiant Steps – In Memory Of John Coltrane ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful little tribute to the late, great John Coltrane – served up as a piano trio session led by Tommy Flanagan, but done with a sense of power and imagination that rivals the strength of Trane's classics! All tracks here are originals by Coltrane, performed by Flanagan with a forceful approach to the piano that shows a bit more McCoy Tyner than usual – and which is propelled strongly on most numbers by bold rhythm work from the team of George Mraz on bass and Al Foster on drums. Foster's work on the kit is especially nice – quite bold, and really soaring forward with a sense of righteous energy – inspiring Flanagan to heights we've never heard before on a session like this. Titles include "Naima", "Giant Steps", "Syeeda's Song Flute", "Central Park West", "Mr PC", and "Cousin Mary". CD

A rare album by the great west coast Latin trumpeter Luis Gasca, and argubly the best album he ever recorded! The set was recorded in New York during the late 60's, and features a great lineup of musicians that includes Paul Griffin on piano, Joe Henderson on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Mongo santamaria on conga, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The style's a mix of soul jazz, Latin, and bits of modal riffing – and the record features some beautiful large arrangements by Gasca and Mark Levine, in a style that's a bit like some of Duke Pearson's work from the late 60s, but handled with a bit more of an edge. Tracks include "Coisa No. 2", "Afro Blue", "Joy Ride", and "Sweet Pea". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful album from Dexter Gordon's later years at Columbia – and a rare session that pairs larger arrangements with his soulful voice on the tenor and soprano saxophone! Although other players worked often in this mode, the record may well be the only one of its type for Dexter – but that doesn't stop it from being a standout treasure that lets us hear a whole new side of his talents. Slide Hampton handled the arrangements, and he really works some magic with players that include Woody Shaw, Benny Bailey, Frank Wess, and Bobby Hutcherson – using their best talents to create richly chromatic backdrops for Dex's solos. A few of the players step out on their own lines on longer tracks, and titles include "Fried Bananas", "You're Blase", "Insensatez", "Moontrane", and "Laura". LP, Vinyl record album

DJM, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Not of Johnny's more famous albums, but it's plenty darn nice – and done in a wicked blend of spacey vocals and keyboards that's very much in the best Guitar Watson mode! There's a bit of a bump to a few tunes on the set, clearly a move to make it onto the dancefloor – but the album's hardly a cheap disco effort, as all the Watson guitar, vocals, and humor dominate the record strongly – and seem to come alive with a bit of new energy away from some of the usual bluesier settings. Titles include the great scatting number "Wrapped In Black Mink", plus "Miss Frisco", "Baby Face", "You Can Stay But The Noise Must Go", and a remake of "Gangster Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". While we were a bit dismissive of this effort at the time, it's kind of become a bit of a watershed in retrospect, the high water mark for the American Acid Jazz scene, if a bit commercial, and definitely a nice portrait of the mid 90s NYC scene, with loads of great players from all over the spectrum. Not the first album we've heard from saxophonist Michael Thomas, but a record that definitely has us looking at his music all over again – thanks to a double-length collection of wonderfully extended tunes – on which Thomas really runs with bold, open energy on the alto sax! The group here has no piano – just the trumpet of Jason Palmer in the frontline, plus bass from Hans Glawischnig and drums from Johnathan Blake – two rhythm players who bring plenty to the table, but sometimes like to let the horns to the swinging – which Thomas and Palmer do in these nicely blocky passages of sound. Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". The group's a quartet, with Mike Le Donne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the session's recorded with impeccable sound, in the Venus Records mode. Warner/Now Sounds (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Fantastic dreamy pop from one of the greatest harmony groups of the 60s – a set that really has The Association hitting their stride, and finding a way to really let their vocals soar! The sound here really sets the group apart from some of the more old-school harmony acts of the decade – and the shift is almost like that in the Beach Boys at mid 60s, the way that things got more complicated and sophisticated, but more powerful too – even when the tunes have some really sing-song charms that made them hits! Production is by Bones Howe, who really gets the sound right – and the album features the giant hits "Windy" and "Never My Love" – plus "Happiness Is", "On A Quiet Night", "We Love Us", "Reputation", and "Requiem For The Masses". This great expanded mono edition has 11 bonus tracks – including "Autumn Afternoon", "Windy (Mono 45)", "Requiem For The Masses (Mono 45)", "Sometime (Instrumental)", "We Love Us (Instrumental)" and more. A huge tribute to a giant force in French music at midcentury – bandleader, arranger, and producer Eddie Barclay – a man who recorded plenty of records on his own, then went on to launch the Barclay label to showcase a generation worth of fresh French talent! The first two CDs provide an overdue look at Barclay's skills as a leader – with 48 instrumentals that move between jazz and larger instrumental modes – a bit like some of the Mercury Records work of the late 50s, especially when Barclay hits some groovier styles. CD3 focuses on his work on behalf of other artists – and the 24 tracks are almost a who's who of a whole generation of French artists – with work from Henri Salvador, Django Reinhardt, Eddie Constantine, Pierre Perret, Dalida, Jean-Paul Vignon, Vince Taylor, Leo Ferre, Dalida, Danyel Gerard, Charles Aznavour, and others! As with all of the sets on this great label, the package is very comprehensive – and comes with detailed notes in both French and English. CD

Arision (UK), 2002. Used ... $6.99
Brilliant – and we didn't know he had it in him! Simon "Big Bang" Serritella has been turning out singles and remixes from the underground London scene of the past few years – and although those have all been pretty sweet, this debut LP is a giant step forward! The groove is a cosmic blend of beats and keys that's similar to other London work – but it's also handled with an incredibly soulful approach, one that feels a lot more steeped in the history of the groove than you might think, with samples and influences that run back to 60s bossa, baroque soul, and beyond! Truly a gem, and wonderful all the way through – with tracks that include "Spanish Portrait", "Clouds", "Negotiator", "Workshop", "Speak Low", "Neptune Rising", and "Pressure". Features guest work by Jessica Lauren, Earl Ziner, Hajimi Yoshizawa, and IG Culture too! CD

Important early work from Jaki Byard – one of his first records as a leader, and a wonderful set of quirky piano trio tunes! Jaki's working here with Ron Carter on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – in a format that's similar to other trio records of the time, but which is really pushed to the limit by Byard's unique conception of the keys, and his unabashed ability to play well and whimsical at the same time! And by "whimsical", we're not saying "goofy", or "silly" – but really just are referring to Jaki's clearly unabashed love of all things musical – a joyous celebration of many strands of jazz, all coming together in a sound that's all his own! Atlantic/Rhino, Early 60s. Used 7 CDs & Book ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing set of work by John Coltrane – some of his best recordings ever, tracks that form a pivotal point between his later 50s work with Miles Davis and his mid 60s spiritual searching years. The set's unbelievably exhaustive – and includes every track that was ever issued by Coltrane on an Atlantic album, plus some great alternate takes, plus a 72 page hardbound book of photos and writings, plus a whole CD of rare material that was never issued before! (The folks at Atlantic say that they would have loved to make an even bigger set – but after a fire in their warehouse in the 70s, this one CD of tapes is all that ever remained!) The whole package is incredibly well put together – in a small discrete box with some great fold-out CD cases, and a wonderful mechanism for storage that's as great as the music in the set. Titles include "Syeeda's Song Flute", "Ole", "My Favorite Things", "Cousin Mary", "Giant Steps", "Mr Day", "Blues To Elvin", "Satellite", "Liberia", "Dahomey Dance", and sooooo much more! CD

The legendary unreleased Motown recordings by The Contours – material that should have been issued as a full length LP in 1964 – but all but a couple tunes have languished in the vaults until now! The group simply kills on on these dancefloor ready stormers, with raucous, charismatic lead vocals and tight harmony backup – on a set of numbers that were no doubt ready and set to slay live audiences. We're sure The Contours were unbeatable live, but these recordings really should have made it out at the time. Better late than never, to say the very least! Includes the 60s singles "Can You Do It" and "Can You Jerk Like Me", plus the unreleased "Do The See Saw", "Foot Stomping Time", "Party Groove", "Okey Dokey", "Love Is Uncertain", "Wanted", "Boy Meets Girl", "You Hurt Me So", "Throw You Out Of My Mind", "Giant Steps", "Let's Do The Uncle Willie", "Tonight", "Nobody Fine As Dinah", "Somebody's Daughter Outta", "Let's Do The Uncle Willie" and more. 26 tracks in all! Smoke Sessions, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
There's nothing humble about the sound of Wayne Escoffery on this great little set – as the tenor giant really comes on strong, blowing with a ferocity that really matches the energy of the rest of the group! There's a stunning rhythm trio at the core – David Kikoski on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Ralph Peterson Jr on drums – who work together with these bold, chunky building blocks of sound – even when things are mellow – which seems to give Escoffery's horn a sense of majesty we don't always hear on other records, and which rises up even more when joined by guest work from Randy Brecker on trumpet and David Gilmore on guitar! The album's also got some interesting spiritual elements at the core – fresh reworkings of pieces of a mass by Benjamin Britten, re-arranged for small combo energy by Escoffery – mixed with originals by some of the group. Vaughn Escoffery sings on "Sanctus" – and other titles include "Quarter Moon", "The Humble Warrior", "Chain Gang", "Back To Square One", "AKA Reggie", and "Undefined". CD

German OakDown In The Bunker (3CD set) ... CD
Bunker/Now Again, 1972. New Copy 3CD ... $9.99 20.98
One of the darkest albums of the Krautrock scene in the 70s – an album that was actually recorded in a WWII-era bunker – where the duo were free to open up their instruments, jam for a very long time, and play with the sorts of effects and techniques you might know from bigger groups of the period! Yet there's a brooding quality here that's different than Can, Faust, or other groups – maybe because German Oak were a duo without a very clear path forward, and also because recording an album in an underground concrete bunker was bound to produced some weird vibes on the session! One of the group members recalls in the notes that in the space, he couldn't help thinking of the trauma of WWII – and you can definitely hear that in the music, and see it in the look of the package – which carries tunes that include "Screaming Skeletons", "Missile Song", "Belle's Song", and "Nothing". This fantastic package offers up some great notes from the group – in both German and English – and also adds in rare material too – the tracks "Bear Song", "Happy Stripes On Cats", "Ghost Guitar", "Belle's Song (extended)", "Python Vs Tiger", "Giant Rock Boulder Golem", "Missle Song (extended)", "Harpy & Peregrine", and "Bear Song (alt version)". Here, Gold certain reaffirms that reputation – working with amazing deftness that calls to mind the quick changes on the keys that Don Patterson brought to jazz organ work in the late 60s, mixed maybe with a bit of the soaring flow of Larry Young at the same time! The trio is super-tight too – and features the great Billy Hart on drums, and frequent partner Dave Stryker on guitar – plus guest trumpet work from Jeremy Pelt on three tracks, really giving the album a great layer of color with his tone. Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.98
One of the most spiritual recordings put out by the Strata East label – and the album that put tenor giant Billy Harper on the map! Harper leads a hip group here – one that features George Cables on piano, Reggie Workmanon bass, Jimmy Owens on trumpet, and Julian Preister on trombone – and they're joined by a quintet of voices that includes Eugene McDaniels, all singing behind the jazz players in an uplifting spiritual mode that cries out with the new soul jazz freedom of the 70s! Max Roach and Donald Byrd had begun experiments like this a decade before, but Harper's work here blows them all away – with a sense of righteousness and focus that's simply astounding, especially considering that the album was Billy's first as a leader! Harper's solos are worth the price of the record alone – searing with a raw, post-Coltrane energy as he darts in and out of the voices in the backings. Titles are all original compositions – and include "Capra Black", "Soulfully I Love You", "New Breed", "Sir Galahad", and "Cry of Hunger". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz In Britain (UK), 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 26.99
British tenor giant Tubby Hayes left the planet all too soon – passing away at the age of 38 in 1973 – but right up to the end, he continued to blow away most of his contemporaries – as you'll hear from this set of unreleased live material from 1972! The recording is from a time when Hayes was actually coming back out of a bit of time away from the scene – recuperating from heart issues that were soon to take away his life – and the period is almost a return to the basics of Tubby's breakout recordings of the late 50s – when he emerged as a tenor soloist to rival American greats like Sonny Rollins or Dexter Gordon! You can definitely hear that quality here, as Tubbs takes on some older standards, plus a few originals – and spins out these wonderful long solos that never fair for imagination or soulful expression – and which also feature some occasional great moments on flute too. The group is a very familiar one – Mike Pyne on piano, Tony Levin on drums, and Ron Mathewson on pass – who happened to record the proceedings over the course of two nights at Ronnie Scotts. Titles include long takes on "Lady Celia", "Trane's Blues", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Trenton Place", and "I Thought About You" – plus two shorter incomplete tracks, "Seven Steps To Heaven" and "Sienna Red". Fontana (UK), 1968. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant late album from British tenor giant Tubby Hayes – one of his last true studio sessions, and a free-thinking album by a quartet that included Mike Pyne on piano, Ron Matthewson on bass, and Tony Levin on drums. Hayes' tenor talents are as strong as ever – imaginative and firey and with a tone that most other British players never reached – but he's also picking up some late 60s elements of freedom, and playing with his style a bit, in kind of an edgey way that creates more tension than usual for a set by Tubbs. The tracks are long and very creative original compositions – and the album's a true masterpiece that shows the wealth of talent bubbling on the UK jazz scene during the mid to late 60s. Titles include "Trenton Place", "Blues In Orbit", "Mexican Green", "Dedication To Joy", and "The Second City Steamer". LP, Vinyl record album

Players on the set include the cream of British jazz of the mid 60s – like Kenny Wheeler, Ronnie Ross, Ronnie Scott, and Gordon Beck – and Tubby plays vibes and flute in addition to tenor, working in an open-ended style that is tremendously evocative. Titles include "Nutty", "Milestones", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "Night In Tunisia" – all done in very different versions than usual! 2 electric soul jazz classics from Joe Henderson! In Pursuit Of Blackness features both live and studio material, all of which show Henderson at the height of his powers! George Cables is on electric piano throughout, and his backing of Joe Henderson is excellent – bringing out a whole new edge for the saxophone giant – one that's spacious, and searching, and much more open than before! The album features 2 tracks from the legendary 1970 Lighthouse concert with Woody Shaw on trumpet and Lenny White on drums – plus 3 more from a studio session that includes Curtis Fuller on trombone, Pete Yellen on saxes, and Stanley Clarke on bass. Titles include "Gazelle", "Mind Over Matter", "Invitation", and "A Shade Of Jade". Black Is The Color is some of the most ambitious electric work from Joe Henderson to date – a record that really has him stretching out from his previous small combo keyboard sets, into a space that's much fuller and even more righteous! Frequent partner George Cables is very much in force on electric piano – helping create that floating middle-level sound that really lets Henderson find some new space on tenor – as well as soprano sax and flute. Other players are a range of different musicians with a similar spirit – and include David Horowitz on synthesizer, Ralph MacDonald and Airto on percussion, Jack DeJohnette on drums and electric piano, Dave Holland on acoustic bass, Ron Carter on electric bass, and Georg Waldenius on guitar. Some of the cuts have a Brazilian tinge, others have a moody fusiony feel – really stretching out with intensity! Jazz funk genius from Freddie Hubbard in the mid 70s! Gleam was a Japanese-only double album from the jazz giant in its original release – mighty funky at times, too – right up there with some of the best Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock Japanese sets from the 70s! It's a live set captured in March of '75 at Tokyo's Yubin Chokin Hall – long numbers played by a group that includes Freddie on trumpet, Carl Randall on tenor and flute, George Cables on electric piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Carl Burnett on drums, and Buck Clark on percussion! Each player has plenty of space to groove, and it's very well captured – you can hear the most expressive solos and the most subtle nuances. Some great solos by Freddie and the rest of the players – breathless tenor & flute by Randall, keys by Cables that are jazz funk perfection and interplay between Burnett's drums and Clark's congas & percussion that's somehow tense and comfortable at the same time. The shortest number in the set runs more than the 7 minutes and the longest is more than 20 minutes – and none is one second shorter than necessary, actually leaving us pining for more – making it all the more vital in the double album format. Released on 2CDs here! How this great album has been so hard to find over the years is a mystery. Titles include "Kuntu", "Spirits Of Trane", an amazing cover of Stevie Wonder's "Too High", "Midnight At The Oasis", "Ebony Moonbeams", and "Put It In The Pocket". CD

Drummer Ulysses Owens leads a great ensemble here – a largeish group that he makes swing and soar throughout, driving the whole thing with the kind of fire that Kenny Clarke might have done in a similar setting! As with Clarke in his famous big band, Owens knows that the best sound will come from the group if he opens the door to all the many talents in the lineup – not just big names like Michael Dease on trombone, Stefon Harris on vibes, and Alexa Tarantino on alto – but also players like trumpeter Benny Benack, tenorist Diego Rivera, and bassist Yasushi Nakamura – who not only solo, but also bring their own arrangements to the group. There's a wonderful sense of individual spirit and color within the group – a very fresh take on this sort of territory – and titles include "Language Of Flowers", "Harlem Harlem Harlem", "Soul Conversations", "London Towne", "Red Chair", and "Beardom X" – plus a version of "Giant Steps". ✨✧ Marty RobbinsGunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs ... LP
Columbia, 1959. Very Good ... $9.99
Marty Robbins had one of those careers that must have left even die hard fans scratching their heads. His catalog ranges from typical syrupy 50s ballads, calypso numbers, Hawaiian guitar pop, and of course the cartoonish wild west gunfighter BS that we love him for! It's billed as "a classic concept album about the old west" but it's about as historically accurate as the Sergio Leone films of the same nature – and every bit as fun and, dare we say it, dramatically compelling! The eternally great "El Paso" is the master stroke here, and both the short and previously not included long versions are in the set. It was recently covered by unsung genius Howe Gelb & Giant Sand, and easily one of our favorite country tunes. Other tracks include "Big Iron", "Cold Water", "Running Gun" and "In The Valley". Charlie Sepulveda & The TurnaroundThis Is Latin Jazz ... CD
High Note, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
The title tells it all – as trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda serves up a genre-defining set of Latin jazz – a record that's every bit about the jazz solos and instrumentation in the lineup, as it is the Latin rhythms at the core! The main group is just a sextet – no giant Latin ensemble, and instead a combo that plays with the fluid intensity of a hardbop group – led by Charlie Sepulveda on trumpet, with Norberto Ortiz on tenor, Eduardo Zayas on piano, Gabriel Rodriguez on bass, Francisco Alcala on drums, and Nicholas Cozaboom on percussion. There's some famous guest help on the record – trumpet from Randy Brecker, trombone from Steve Turre, and flute from Nestor Torres – but the main group is more than enough to hold our interest, as they really cook on long tracks that include "Liberty", "Tales From The Wall", "Peer Magic", "Estampas", "Firm Roots", and "Alfonsina Y El Mar". Siegel Schwall Band953 West ... LP
Wooden Nickel, 1975. Near Mint- ... $7.99
The album's title is a reference to an address on the north side of Chicago – 953 West Belmont Ave – somewhat gritty at the time the album was recorded, now not too far from a giant Target discount store! Yet the address, the cover, and the overall presentation are a great example of the way that the north side folk scene morphed as the 60s moved into the 70s – as a group like the Siegel Schwall Band were able to work in a style that was nicely lean, and free from some of the more commercial inclinations that might have been foisted on them, had they been recording on the coasts! By this point in the 70s, so many once-blues acts had morphed into more mainstream blues rock modes – not always in a bad way, but certainly different than the mix of acoustic and electric blues inspirations these guys use for their very well-penned, often witty songs. Titles include "Traitor From Decatur", "Good Woman", "When I've Been Drinkin", "Off To Denver", "I Think It Was The Wine", and "Just Another Song About The Country Sung By A City Boy". A fantastic early bossa session from Wilson Simonal! His deep soulful voice is in perfect form – and it sounds super next to sweet lilting arrangements by the great Lyrio Panicalli – who uses larger orchestrations to open up that soulful side of Wilson's vocals – the sort that made him a key precursor of the 70s samba soul generation! The whole thing's upbeat and groovy – in a way that really points towards some of Simonal's giant work to come – and titles Include a version of Marcos Valle's "Tudo De Voce", plus the tracks "Telefone", "Lagrima Flor", "Menino Triste", "Samba E Verbo", and "Balanco Zona Sul". A great return to form for Hammond giant Jimmy Smith – heard here on an early 90s date for Blue Note, done in the same style as Jimmy's classic work for the label! The set's a live one, recorded in Japan – and the tracks have this open flow that's mighty nice – proof that Smith's talents on the keys hadn't dimmed at all over the years, recorded alongside some tremendous guitar work from Kenny Burrell – who's got that same sense of wide tone with a lean groove that made earlier collaborations with Jimmy so great. The similarly-named Jimmie Smith is on drums in the trio – and tracks include "The Cat", "The Preacher", "All Day Long", "Chittlins Con Carne", and "The Organ Grinder's Swing". CD

Lonnie SmithThink! (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... $12.99
A seminal album from Hammond giant Lonnie Smith – a bold statement that really gives the organist his own identity after some killer work in the combos of Lou Donaldson and George Benson! Lonnie's one of the key flag-fliers of the new style of funky organ jazz – a mode different from the earlier styles of Jimmy Smith or Jimmy McGriff – leaner, cleaner, and often tied heavily to the drums – which, in this case, are handled by Marion Booker Jr, but in a way that recalls some of the Idris Muhammad greatness on other Blue Note albums of the time. The mighty Pucho (of Latin Soul Brothers fame) plays added timbales, and there's also two more conga players – ensuring a tight, yet complex sort of groove – and the frontline features Lee Morgan on trumpet, David Newman on tenor and flute, and Melvin Sparks on guitar. Tracks are long, with complicated rhythms – and soulful yet sophisticated solos to match – and titles include the seminal "Son Of Ice Bag", a great cover of "Think", and the tracks "Slouchin", "Call Of The Wild", and "Three Blind Mice". Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A seminal pop psych classic from the UK scene – served up here by a group that seem to borrow a bit of the energy from the late 60s Bee Gees at their trippiest, but who also really have a way for turning out a tune that has a very groovy vibe! Part of the credit might go to producer John Schroeder – a Brit sound library giant in his own right, and clearly able to make the sound of the records guitars, organ, and vocals sound incredibly groovy. But it's also clear that the group have plenty of great energy of their own – as they kept on going strongly, even after this early breakout record. Titles include their seminal "Pictures Of Matchstick Men", plus "Ice In The Sun", "Elizabeth Dreams", "Sunny Cellophane Sky", "Technicolor Dreams", "Black Veils Of Melancholy", "When My Mind Is Not Live", and "Spicks & Specks". There's a few nice southern soul moments – thanks to production at Broadway Studios, in Sheffield, Alabama – and titles include "God Ain't Blessing America", "When He Was No One", "I Wanna Lifetime Of Loving You", "I Wouldn't Leave Here To Go To Heaven", "Chewed UP Grass", and "The Mind Does The Dancing While The Body Pulls The Strings". TenderloniousPiccolo – Tender Plays Tubby ... CD
Jazz Detective (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A really fantastic album from this hip British reedman – and maybe his strongest jazz album to date! As you might guess from the title, Tenderlonious plays the music of Tubby Hayes here – taking on older songs by the 60s British jazz giant, served up in small combo modes, with flute in the lead instead of a tenor! The group's got a really deep, rich sound – with creative instrumentation from Hamish Balfour on Fender Rhodes, piano, and vibes – plus Nick Walters on trumpet, Aidan Shepherd on accordion, Pete Martin on bass, and Tim Carnegie on drums – all players who really get that very hip groove of Tubby at his best – particularly the style of his mid 60s live albums on Fontana. There's no processing or other effects – as on other Tenderlonious albums – just straight jazz, beautifully done – and also a bit of soprano and piccolo from the leader too. There's just four tracks on the record – this is more of an EP than an LP – but the whole thing is superb, and titles include "Down In The Village", "Raga", "In The Night", and "Trenton Place". CD

There's a simple, focused, and direct sort of energy going on here – a soaring sensibility that's carried along by all the best modal impulses that Tyner and Coltrane explored together back in the day – but which is expressed with a different sort of warmth and soul in this trio setting. The group features Avery Sharpe on bass and Aaron Scott on drums – and titles include versions of Coltrane's "India", "Giant Steps", "One & Four", "Up Gainst The Wall", and "The Wise One" – plus "Good Morning Heartache" and "In Walked Bud". The music is very striking and groovy – a late 60s update of earlier crime jazz modes, but without the funk to come in the 70s – which means that some of the boldest, most compelling sounds come from acoustic instrumentation used in very powerful ways – sometimes spare and subtle, but often with a tenor sax or some other instrument blaring out in the lead! That's Ray Vernon, not Vernon Wray – but both names are correct, as Ray's the brother of guitar giant Link Wray – and works here under an odd variation of his family name, but on an equally raw set of vintage rockers! Ray's a singer, but also a guitarist – and brother Link joins in on a number of these tracks with the kind of moody raw twang that made his famous instrumentals so great – as both of the brothers move through a surprisingly rich array of indie singles from the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – shifting in contributions, so that one track might have the guitar right up in the mix, another might have a vocal. There's a whopping 34 tracks in all – and detailed notes that unlock the mystery of these tunes – material that includes "Hold It", "Big City After Dark", "Evil Angel", "Vendetta", "Danger One Way Love", "I'm Countin On You", and "Roughshod" by Ray Vernon with The Raymen – plus "Teenage Cutie" by Lucky Wray, "Flirty Baby" by The Wraymen, "You Can't Make Me Doubt My Baby" by Bunker Hill, "A Brand New Love" by The American Teens, "So Young" by The Dial Tones, "Watch Yourself" by The British Walkers, "Boo Hoo" by Marvin Rainwater, and the cuts "Window Shopping", "I'll Be So Good To You", and "The Freeze" by Link Wray. Westbound/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A massive celebration of the legendary Westbound Records – a Detroit record label started at the end of the 60s, and one that took the Motor City into much heavier territory than Motown! Westbound was the initial home of both Funkadelic and Ohio Players – and the imprint had a great ear for the kind of deeper, funkier side of the soul music spectrum – both with big groups like the two we just mentioned, and with a host of lesser-known singers and combos too! This package brings together two dozen key singles on Westbound – but not the giant hits, and instead the kind of songs that illustrate that key special touch that really set the company apart from the rest – even as the 70s moved on, and elements of club music started coming into their groove. Titles include "I Love You" by The Motivations, "A Letter From Vietnam" by Emanuel Lansky, "Everything Is Going To Be Alright" by Bill Moss & The Celestials, "Ain't No Telling" by Houston Outlaws, "Yes I'm In Love" by Unique Blend, "Why Not Start All Over Again" by The Counts, "I've Changed" by The Magictones, "I'll Bet You" by Funkadelic, "Music Man (part 1)" by Pleasure Web, "Get Up Off My Mind" by Denise LaSalle, "Baby Let Me Take You In My Arms" by Detroit Emeralds, "Devil's Gun" by CJ & Co, "Get Ya Some" by Melvin Sparks, "Alvin Stone" by Fantastic Four, "If You Love Him" by Junie, "Calling Planet Earth" by Dennis Coffey, "Crazy Legs" by Donald Austin, and "Funky Worm" by The Ohio Players. An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more – plus the CD bonus track "Original Bill" by Koichi Matsukaze Trio. 15 tracks on 2CDs. An explosive look at the mighty songwriting legacy of The Beatles – served up here in a giant 3CD package that features the group's famous songs covered by a whole group of their contemporaries on the UK scene! The song selection is brilliant – dozens of tracks that we never would have heard otherwise – and as with all Grapefruit packages like this, the whole thing comes with a detailed booklet of notes on the music – way more information than you'd find even if you spent the whole day searching online. 68 tracks in all – with work from The Sorrows, Ice, The Spectrum, Real McCoy, The Eyes, Loose Ends, Rainbow Ffolly, Affinity, Yes, Blonde On Blonde, Spooky Tooth, Big Jim Sullivan, The Gods, Orange Bicycle, The Tremeloes, Jason Crest, Tomorrow, Circus, The Hollies, Camel, and many others! An unusual later performance from tenor giant Don Byas – one that has him working with a very cool Dutch group, and hitting some modes that are quite different than some of Don's earlier work! Byas was right at home in the overseas scene at the time – a fact that you'll notice on his surprisingly strong Dutch language introductions to one of the tracks, and which you'll hear superbly in his work with Pim Jacobs on piano, Ruud Jacobs on bass, and John Engels on drums – all top players on the scene in The Netherlands, with a bold rhythmic approach that often pushes Byas more strongly into 60s grooves than anyone might expect. The album begins with a great modal version of "On Green Dolphin Street", and includes takes on "I Remember Clifford", "Lady Bird", "Groovin High", "Moonlight In Vermont", and "Billie's Bounce". CD

✨✧ Duke EllingtonLatin American Suite ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1968/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer album – one of Duke Ellington's best from the later years! The record features excellent writing from Duke – in a Latin mode, obviously, but touched with these incredible orchestrations that bring all sorts of weird twists and turns to the grooves, yet still manage to keep everything swinging nicely! The result is a rare album of brilliance – one that's vaguely similar to the Clarke Boland Big Band's Latin Kaleidoscope album, but with a genius that's all it's own. The album's got all the modernist touches of late Duke – but man, it also swings like a mofo, and with a really groovy sound – and the great Paul Gonsalves brings some wonderful solo work to the entire session. Titles include "Oclupaca", "Chico Cuadradino", "Eque", "The Sleeping Lady & The Giant Who Watches Over Her", and "Brasiliance". CD

✨✧ Grateful DeadWorkingman's Dead ... LP
Warner, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the first giant hits by the Grateful Dead – and a record that has the group tightening things up a bit more, and stepping into some of the country-tinged territory of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers! Turns out, the move is a great one – as the songs come across with a real down to earth charm that maybe humanizes the group a bit more for the uninitiated listener – a mix of northern Cali pastoral with some of the musical dexterity they'd brought with them from the Haight – folded together perfectly, with a quality that's made the album one of their best-remembered over the decades. Titles include "Uncle John's Band" – maybe their biggest hit at the time – plus "Dire Wolf", "New Speedway Boogie", "Cumberland Blues", "Casey Jones", "Easy Wind", "High Time", and "Black Peter".
