Europe Jazz All Stars (Surman/Humair/Mangelsdorff/Louiss/Pedersen)Room 1220 ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $22.99
An overlooked performance by a quintet of avant jazz masters from the European scene at the start of the 70s – one that was recorded and issued only over in Japan, but which bristles with the energy of some of the best French and German avant albums of the time! The tracks are long, and relatively free – and feature this incredible lineup of John Surman on baritone, Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Eddie Louiss on piano and organ, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – players who come together here with the kind of boundless surprises you'd imagine from their European recordings of the time – save maybe for Pedersen, who is surprisingly at home in this improvised setting! The cover makes the record feel like some lost gem on MPS – and the vibe is very much like the cream of that label's free jazz records of the time – with titles that include "Room 1220", "Triplet Circle", and "My Kind Of Beauty". ✨✧ Mighty Mocambos2066 ... LP
Legere (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Mocambos are back, and mightier than ever – thanks to help from a lineup of all-stars who include Lee Fields, Jswiss, Ice T, Gizelle Smith, and even German sci-fi legend Peter Thomas! The core sound of the group is as before – tight funk by a large ensemble of all-star players who've worked in a variety of other contemporary funk settings – but the addition of deeper soul and hip hop vocals to the record really opens things up – and maybe makes us appreciate the instrumentation at the core even more, since these guys do so a great job of moving around to accommodate the setting. And yet the whole thing is still strongly unified with Mighty Mocambos power – a great take on older funk modes, on titles that include "Stronger", "Return To Space", "Golden Shadow", "Take On The World", "Here We Go", "Bounce That Ass", "Where Do We Go From Here", and "Macumba". VariousBakersfield Sound – Country Music Capitol Of The West 1940 to 1974 (10CD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1940s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 10CD ... $189.99 249.99
An amazing tribute to the Bakersfield scene – one that finally gives the California city the same sort of attention that we usually see in sets dedicated to Nashville! Bakersfield is well-known as the home of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, but the city's got a long legacy of influencing country music for decades – a good deal of which is presented here, in a package that brings together loads of rare Cali country singles that we never would have heard otherwise, along with well-chosen cuts from some of its stars, and a fair bit of rare and unissued material too! At the center of the set is a huge hardcover book by Scott Bomar – hardcover, 12" square, and with 224 full color pages of notes and images on the genius of Bakersfield, and what made it such a unique country music spot. The 10 CDs feature nearly 300 songs in all – one disc of which is all rare live and unissued material – and in addition to work by Buck and Merle, the set features tracks by Wayne Morris, Jerry Cornelius, Vancie & Rita, Georgia Lynn, Kenny Hays, Tommy Lewis, Rollie Webber, Johnny Barnette, Bonnie Owens, Bobby Durham, George Latta, Owen Charles, Larry Daniels, Gene Moles, Al Brumley, Bill Handy, Leo Stephens, Faye Hardin, Tom Tall, Cliff Crofford, Kenny Vernon, Rose Lee Maphis, Oscar Whittington, Foyle Holley, Dick Curless, Red Simpson, Gary Paxton, Jim Ward, and many many more! VariousPeace Chant 2 (Vols 3 & 4) – Raw, Deep, & Spiritual Jazz ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic collection, and one that goes deep deep into the farther reaches of the spiritual scene in the 70s – tracks that are way more obscure than music on labels like Strata East or Impulse, and which really show an evolution of music ideas at the time! The core style is jazz, but there are also other elements at play too – and the tracks are a mix of instrumentals and vocals, the latter of which have an especially wonderful quality! Some of the tunes are nicely gentle, almost quiet in spirit – while others have a bolder, more political approach – and the mix of tunes throughout is very fresh, and maybe even better than the first collection in this series. Titles include "Mother's Day" by Lenny Marcus Trio, "Africa The Beautiful" by Roland Hayes, "Muhammad Ali" by Jule Farmer, "Fulive" by Supa Lowery Brothers, "Themes & Variations" by Black Is, "Natural Life" by Natural Life, "Heal It" by Rama Dyushambee, "Ghana Cha" by Donn Preston Group, "Quernemoen" by Wayne Powell Octet, "Egg Nog" by Tommy Jones, "Attitude" by Organic Pulse Ensemble, "Brass Winds" by The Niambi Big Band, "Freedom" by Brother Yu Sextet, and "Ser Vi Tude" by James Scales & All Stars. VariousPop Makossa – The Invasive Dance Beat Of Cameroon 1976 to 1984 ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
You might know "Soul Makossa" – the worldwide hit by Manu Dibango that was covered by many folks, and sampled heavily in later years too – but this set takes a look at the deeper scene behind that famous groove, through a host of wickedly funky tracks from the late 70s scene in Cameroon! The tracks here are all upbeat, and not afraid to pick up a few influences from disco when they want – but they've also got a more loose, open sort of vibe – a wonderful flow that seems to set the scene for just about anything to happen over the course of the longer songs! Instrumentation and vocals are equally important here – especially the basslines and guitars – and the style of the work starts out in Dibango territory, but soon moves past into a range of very cool modes. As usual with Analogue Africa, the whole thing's way more than just a batch of songs, too – as the notes are huge, and really get at the special feeling of the scene – a world that we've never seen opened up this well. Titles include "More Love" by Pat Ndoye, "Mininga Meyong Mese" by Nkodo Si-Tony, "Ye Medjuie" by Emmanuel Kahe & Jeanette Kemonge, "Pop Makossa Invasion" by Dream Stars, "Nen Lambo" by Bill Loko, "Yaounde Girls" by Mystic Djim & The Spirits, "Nogon Engap" by Olinga Gaston, "Mussoloki" by Bernard Ntone, and "M'Ongele M'Am" by Eko. ✨✧ IntuitIntuit ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Intuit – not only for the solid work by the group itself, but even more so for the wonderful range of guest stars that includes Doug Carn, Flora Purim, Airto, and Andy Bey! There's a cosmic vibe here that's really amazing – dipping back into the headiest days of 70s groove, and coming up with a sound that's steeped in tradition, yet brushed off with a fresh approach that's very much in keeping with the Compost Records sound. The album's one of the most organic and soulful we've ever heard from Compost – and Intuit really manage to get some incredible work out of their guest stars – especially Bey, who sounds better here than we've heard in years, with a tone and approach that rivals his 70s work with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! The groove is a mix of soul jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and some sweet modern electric work – all percolating together with a sound that's so good, you'll wonder why nobody ever thought of it before! Titles include "Crianca Das Ondas", "Western Sunrise", "Fenytola", "A New Beginning", "Planet Birth", "O Preguicoso", "Wewa", and "Bubblin Jam". CD

Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hefty helping of songs about the state of Tennessee – served up here in a great mix of postwar country and early rock and roll – maybe no surprise, given that the state is home to both Memphis and Nashville! Some tunes here are familiar classics, others are more obscure – and they're brought together in a great mix of sounds that's very much in keeping with the style we love on other compilations from the Bear Family label. 25 tracks in all – and titles include "Tennessee Flat Top Box" by Johnny Cash, "Tennessee Whiskey" by David Allen Coe, "Tennessee Blues" by Tex Ritter, "Tennessee Two Step" by Joe Maphis, "Tennessee Local" by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "FOB Tennessee" by Kenny Roberts, "Tennessee Rag" by Country All Stars, "Tennessee Saturday Night" by Ernest Tubb, "Tennessee Jive" by Johnny Horton, "Tennessee Boogie" by Zeb Turner, "Tennessee Toddy" by Marty Robbins, and "I'm Goin Back To Tennessee" by Jimmie Logsdon. The famous Winter Dance Party tour of 1959 cost the world the young talents of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper – but after those three giants died in a legendary plane crash, it was up to the rest of the cast to carry on! This second volume in the excellent Bear Family series picks up where the first left off – and features material by some of the remaining members of the tour, sprinkled with a few posthumous releases by those lost in the crash – all with a huge booklet of notes and images! There's also a few tribute songs in the mix – showing the quick musical response to the loss of the three – and even early work by Waylon Jennings, who was an early replacement for Holly's Crickets. 34 tracks in all – with titles that include "Just A Dream" by Jimmy Clanton, "Three Young Men" by Lee Davis, "Suzie Baby" by Bobby Vee, "I'm Broke" by Frankie Avalon, "My Little Sue" by Terry Lee & The Poorboys, "Steady Date" by Fabian, "Raining In My Heart" by Buddy Holly, "The All American Boy" by Bill Parsons, "Three Stars" by Tommy Dee with Carol Kay & The Teen-Aires, "Walking Through My Dreams" by The Big Bopper, "That's My Little Suzie" by Ritchie Valens, "Oh Linda" by Frankie Sardo, and "Jole Blon" by Waylon Jennings. ✨✧ Bud PowellStrictly Confidential/Essen Jazz Festival All Stars (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Black Lion/Muzak (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $24.99
A pair of rare late albums from Bud Powell – back to back in a single set! Strictly Confidential is a really unusual set of recordings from pianist Bud Powell – tracks recorded in his overseas home, solo – a setting that puts the keyboard magic of Powell in a similar sound to that of Art Tatum, who'd recorded in such a way the decade before! At some level, these might be the most compelling recordings that Bud made at the time – as there's an intimacy that's wonderful, and an inherent swing that makes you realize how much Powell was always driving the group – even when he was working with top-shelf drummers and bassists. Plus, the solo mode maybe also opens up a current of humanity past the Bud's skills on the keys – which makes the whole record all that much more powerful. Titles include "Deep Night", "Strictly Confidental", "Wahoo", "Deep Inside", "My Devotion", "Conception", and "Ruby My Dear". Essen Jazz Festival All Stars is a great recording from the 1960 Essen Jazz Festival in Germany – one that has bassist Oscar Pettiford playing with Bud Powell and drummer Kenny Clarke (all of whom were living abroad at the time), and being joined by Coleman Hawkins on a few tracks. On the trio sides, although Powell's strong piano is out front, Pettiford still gets a lot of room to solo in warm round swells. The Hawk sides are our favorites, though, because we love the great tenor player at this point in his career, when he was playing in a way that was deceptively easy, but which was filled with all of these incredible surprises. The tracks on this LP are no exception, and the Hawk flies high high high on "All The Things You Are", "Yesterdays", and "Stuffy". CD

Till BronnerRio (deluxe edition with book & DVD) ... CD
Verve (Germany), 2008. Used 2 Discs ... $13.99
The deepest album we've heard in years from Till Bronner – a beautiful collection of Brazilian-tinged tunes, performed with a host of wonderful guest stars! Bronner plays his usual trumpet, and also sings a bit too – in that warmly raspy voice that we first grew to love during his Chet Baker tribute. But almost even better are the guests – who include Milton Nascimento, Vanessa De Mata, Aimee Mann, Sergio Mendes, Luciana Souza, Melody Gardot, and our own Kurt Elling – all of whom really bring a lot of depth to the record with their contributions. There's still a warmly soulful feel to the set, as you'd hear on other Bronner albums – but the additional Brazilian touches really make the whole thing sound fresh and wonderful – an unexpected treat from an artist we always like to keep our ear on. Titles include "O Que Sera", "Evening", "Ela E Carioca", "Ligia", "Cafe Com Pao", "A Ra", "Bonita", "Sim Ou Nao", "Aquelas Coisas Todas", and "Misterios". CD

✨✧ VariousPut The Whole Armour On – Female Black Gospel 1940s/1950s ... CD
Gospel Friend (Germany), Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy 2CDs ... $24.99 29.98
A wealth of female gospel from the early years of the genre – served up here on a double-length set that features tracks from some of the important stars of the time, plus a host of rare gems that we've never heard before! Most of the material here features a lead female singer with a smaller group – in the style that Sister Rosetta Tharpe made famous, often with an equal tie to R&B in some of the other material – backing that's spare, but which might have an electric guitar or bluesy piano – even though the fantastic vocalist is always right out front in the lead. As with other titles in this series, the package is great – a very thoughtful, essential collection of rare gospel – 54 tracks in all, with titles that include "Just A Few Days Of Labor" by Sallie Martin, "Move Up A Little Higher" by Madam Ernestin Martin, "A Traveler's Tune" by Marie Knight, "Own Me As A Child" by Lockhart Singers, "What's The News" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, "Didn't It Rain" by Simmons/Akers Trio, "Until We Met" by Mary Frazier, "He Knows My Heart" by Sister Elisabeth Eustice, "When God Dips His Love In My Heart" by Ethen Davenport, and "Follow In His Footsteps" by Angelic Gospel Singers. Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Roy was one of the greatest stars of the early years – a hell of a singer, an important composer, and a tireless performer who criss-crossed the south constantly – helping the music to spread and grow, and sparking countless careers along the way! This package is the first to really do justice to these important early years of Acuff – much more so than any of the public domain packages on the market – as the whole thing's handled with the Bear Family sense of completeness – which means that the 9CD box features a whopping 226 songs, recorded for the Vocalion, Arc, and Columbia labels between 1936 and 1951 – all packaged with a massive 184 page hardcover book, filled with new biography information, session notes, an a newly-done discography – plus a fantastic amount of rare photos and illustrations.
