Chris ConnorChris Connor Sings The George Gershwin Almanac Of Song ... CD
Atlantic, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
A real standout in Chris Connor's legendary run for Atlantic Records – and a unique double-length set that was almost her answer to some of the 2LP Verve songbook sessions from Ella Fitzgerald! Like those, this album's based upon the work of a single composer – and features key Gershwin compositions from the 20s and 30s, redone here with a moody, mellow, jazz-based approach – one that unlocks even more darkness in these tunes than you might expect! Instrumentation is by a number of different small groups – assemblages of players who include Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Most on clarinet, Herbie Mann on flute, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al Cohn on tenor, and Ralph Sharon on piano – all working with arrangements by Sharon, Ray Ellis, and Stan Free. The album features a whopping 34 titles in all – with tracks that include "A Foggy Day", "Strike Up The Band", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "Little Jazzbird", "My One & Only", "That Certain Feeling", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Liza", "Soon", and "I Can't Be Bothered Now". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Strike Up The Band" and "Summertime", done in different takes. CD

Buddy DeFranco & Oscar PetersonBuddy DeFranco & Oscar Peterson Play George Gershwin ... LP
Norgran, 1954. Near Mint- ... $39.99
As the title indicates, the session features Buddy DeFranco and Oscar Peterson – but the real guy we wanna thank here is arranger Russ Garcia! Unlike some of the other Verve "soloist with the Peterson Trio" albums of the 50s, this one is more of a shared effort that has Buddy and Oscar both acting as soloists over larger backings directed by Garcia. Russ takes a lot of cues from Ralph Burns on the session – and like Burns on earlier Verve recordings, he sets things up so that the orchestrations never overwhelm the players – and instead simply augment their moods and shade in the colors of the tunes. We especially like Peterson in this format – as he was so often recorded heavily in trio format – but DeFranco is great too, snaking out over the top of the strings with a lean and angular tone on clarinet. Titles include "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "I Got Rhythm", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label Norgran pressing, with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Cover has some clear tape on the top & bottom seams, but looks nice overall.)

Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good 3LP Box Set ... $3.99 5.99
One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess – done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd – as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye plays Bess – but both singers are actually pretty darn great for the set, and really bring a lot out of the tunes. Plus, the other artists on the set really keep things interesting – as the collection features vocal performances by Johnny Hartman, Frank Rosolino, Betty Roche, Bob Dorough, and Sallie Blair. Plus, the whole thing's presented as Gershwin wrote it – complete with narration by Al Jazzbo Collins, and a number of strong instrumental passages. Music is performed by groups led by Russ Garcia, Duke Ellington, Pat Moran, and Stan Levy – and players are an array of the best of both the New York and LA scenes at the time! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Louis ArmstrongElla Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong – George Gershwin: Porgy & Bess ... LP
Verve, 1957. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest takes ever on the Porgy & Bess score – done in duet format by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, in a fuller spirit than their other albums for Verve! Like many late 50s albums of Gershwin's score, this one was issued in advance of the film with Sidney Poitier – but unlike most, this is less of a cash-in affair, and really takes Gershwin's music on its own – serving it up with that newly serious style that Verve was hitting with some artists, especially Ella, in the latter half of the 50s. Most tracks have relatively full backings – strings and jazz orchestrations – and the double-length set features 15 tracks that include "Buzzard Song", "I Got Plenty O Nuttin", "My Man's Gone Now", "I Wants To Stay Here", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "What You Want Wid Bess", "There's A Boat Dat's Leavin Soon For New York", "Oh Lawd I'm On My Way", and "A Woman Is A Sometime Thing". A great step forward for Sarah Vaughan – a set in which she gets the same sort of "songbook" treatment that was really helping Ella Fitzgerald elevate her career at the same time! Backings are by Hal Mooney, who does a good job of bringing a bit of sophistication into the setting, but not at a level that's ever sleepy or overdone – a fair bit like the wonderful mode that Sarah would hit on her Roulette Records material to come! Jimmy Jones plays piano on most numbers, too. CD

✨✧ Denny ZeitlinCrazy Rhythm – Exploring The Music Of George Gershwin ... CD
Sunnyside, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of George Gershwin, but taken in a very different way than you might expect – yet that's maybe no surprise, given the long legacy of creative piano work we've loved from the great Denny Zeitlin! The tunes are all familiar Gershwin standards, but Denny often uses them as rough inspirations, then transforms them into these beautiful sound paintings of his own – still faithful to the spirit and ideas of the originals, yet nicely abstracted, and filled up with the kind of incredible tones and colors that Zeitlin can give us when he's set free in a solo setting like this. In fact, the format may well be one of the most striking examples of Denny's longstanding talents that we've heard in years – and titles include "I Was Doing All Right", "The Man I Love", "Summertime", "Bess You Is My Woman Now", "I've Got A Crush On You", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". Joe PassIra, George, & Joe ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1982. Used ... $3.99
Joe Pass plays a host of Gershwin-penned material – working in a spare combo with a slightly different sound than usual! Pass' guitar still has that deep, round tone that you'll hear on his best Pablo sides – but the group also features rhythm guitar from John Pisano, who makes for a bit of contrast with Joe – almost a second voice that makes things more interesting than a usual trio date. Other players include Jim Hughart on bass and Shelly Manne on drums – and titles include "Soon", "Oh Lady Be Good", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Embraceable You", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". Charlie ShaversGershwin, Shavers, & Strings ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good ... $11.99
The music of George Gershwin, but taken to some great late night territory by the trumpet of Charlie Shavers! The album's a sublime "with strings" date – one that has Charlie blowing beautifully over backdrops from Sy Oliver – charts that certainly use some string instruments, but often in a very spare, mellow way – so that once Shavers gets going, his trumpet is right out front – often with a beautifully moody tone! Titles include "I've Got A Crush On You", "Embraceable You", "Liza", "Summertime", "But Not For Me", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". LP, Vinyl record album

Way more than just a Gershwin Songbook sort of record – thanks to some tremendous blowing here by Zoot Sims, who's mellowed nicely with age, and comes up with a wonderful sound for the record! It may just be us, but there seems to be a lot more soul in Zoot's horn than ever before – more humanity, and a sort of pausing, almost faltering approach to the tunes that takes them way past their overdone versions. ✨✧ VariousGeorge Martin – A Painter In Sound – Pre-Beatles Productions & Classical Influences (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A set that's dedicated to the famous Beatles producer George Martin, and which seeks to bring together a whole host of sounds and styles that not only influenced his work in the studio – but which also represent maybe the odder aspects of the British scene, in a way that really helps create a greater understanding of the more offbeat sounds of The Fab Four themselves! CD1 is titled In All Directions – and brings together jazz, skiffle, vocal tracks, and plenty more – in a nicely varied lineup that includes work from Basil Kirchin, John Dankworth, Bert Weedon, The Vipers, Christopher Logue, Temperance Seven, Ray Cathode, Ron Goodwin, and Cleo Laine. CD2 is titled Experiments With Pop – and has a bit of comedic moments mixed with more musical selections – in a lineup that includes Peter Sellers, John Dankworth, Flanders & Swann, Matt Monro, The Goods, Bernard Cribbins, and Ron Goodwin. CD3 is titled Comedy Surrealist, and continues that spirit – with more Goon Show material, Beyond The Fringe, The Alberts, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, and other important pre-Monty Python acts from the UK – who often brought a lot of creativity to the production of their work in the studio. CD4 features straighter classical influences, but in a range of modes – tracks that begin with Bach, and move through Chopin, Ravel, Debussy, Holst, and even Gershwin. As always with these unusual sets on El Records, there's a lot of thought that goes into the choice of material – drawing lines between sounds that we really didn't expect! CD

Charlie Parker, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the few truly strong and original jazz LPs on the Charlie Parker label – and one of the best early sides by Slide! Despite a hokey title and cover image, the record really has a lot going on – and shows Slide stretching out as an arranger from his days at Atlantic. Side one features the extended "Cloister" dance suite – a 4 part work composed and arranged by Slide, showing his more expansive approach to jazz, one that he'd realize more strongly in European settings of the 60s and 70s. Players include Willie Thomas, Hobart Dotson, Benjamin Jacobs-El, and George Coleman – and the piece comes off wonderfully, very hip, but still swinging and soulful. Side two features shorter numbers – all Gershwin, like "Summertime", "I Loves You Porgy", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "Bess You Is My Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Ran Blake plays George Gershwin – but in a way that's unlike any album of standards we've ever heard! Blake alone would already be quite a change – given his unique way of blocking out a tune – taking its core fragments and weaving them into something new. But he's also working here with Ricky Ford on tenor and Steve Lacy on soprano sax – both reedmen who bring a rich sense of feeling to the record – sharp lines and soulful tones that further the experimental setups by Blake, and really help tie the whole thing together! Most tracks are shortish, and beautiful in their economy – and titles include "Clara Clara", "Who Cares", "Liza", "But Not For Me", "Mine", "Blues", "Oh Where's My Bess", and "Strike Up The Band". Laidback and lovely trumpet work from the legendary Ruby Braff – heard here in the company of pianist Hank Jones, and recorded in a very intimate small group setting! The bulk of the CD features material from Ruby's excellent Ruby Braff Goes Girl Crazy album for Warner Brothers – a recasting of the Gershwin score as an instrumental vehicle for Braff, Jones, Al Cohn, and Jim Hall – all played in a mellow and open-handed style that brings a new sense of swing to the tunes! Rhythm is by George Duvivier or Bob Haggart on bass, and Buzzy Drootin on drums – and titles include "Embraceable You", "Treat Me Rough", "But Not For Me", "I Got Rhythm", and "Bidin My Time". 4 more tracks on the CD are pulled from the album You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me – again with Jones on piano, plus Mundell Lowe on guitar – on titles that include "When Your Lover Has Gone", "Let's Do It", and "Taking A Chance On Love". Last up are 5 more tunes from the album Easy Now – with Roy Eldridge also on trumpet, plus Jones and Lowe again – on the tracks "Yesterdays", "Someday You'll Be Sorry", "Give My Regards To Broadway", "Willow Weep For Me", and "This Is My Lucky Day". ✨✧ Art Farmer/Mundell Lowe SeptetMany Faces Of Art Farmer (plus Porgy & Bess) ... CD
Scepter/Gambit (Spain), Late 50s/Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure from Art Farmer – a tremendous album that hardly ever shows up in the history books, and which, to our knowledge, appears here on CD for the first time ever – plus a bonus album of earlier Farmer work with the Mundell Lowe Septet! Many Faces is a rare 1964 jazz side for the mostly-pop Scepter label – featuring Farmer at the head of a small group working with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Charles McPherson on alto, and Steve Swallow or Ron Carter alternating on bass. The album was done under the direction of Tom McIntosh – the brilliant young composer who had a magical talent for blending together modern and lyrical modes while still keeping a strong degree of soul. McIntosh contributed a few tunes to the set, as did Dennis Sandole – the nearly-forgotten trumpeter from the Philly scene of the 50s. There's a dark beauty to this session that surpasses even many other Farmer sides from the time – and titles include "Hyacinth", "Ally", "Happy Feet", "Minuet In G", and "Saucer Eyes". 1958's Porgy & Bess finds Farmer playing trumpet for guitarist Mundell Lowe's Septet on a nice set of material from Gershwin – including lesser known numbers from the original play. Players include Tony Scott on clarinet and baritone, Ben Webster on tenor and either George Duvivier or Osie Johnson on the kit. Titles include "Summertime", "Bess, You Is My Woman", "I Love You Porgy", "Redhead Woman", "There's A Boat That's Leaving Soon For New York", "It Ain't Necessarily So" and more. CD

This was Sinatra's first swing record for Reprise and his third collaboration with Billy May who arranged and conducted this 1961 recording. It features some standards from the likes of Rodgers & Hart ("Have You Met Miss Jones?") and George & Ira Gershwin ("Love Walked In"), plus some others like "Granada" and "Moonlight on the Ganges." There is a charming photo of Frank on the back cover swinging a golf club in fine form. (This is the record that was later changed to Sinatra Swings.) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousJazz In Brazil ... LP
Honey Pie, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A compilation that's way more than jazz – as it features cuts from a moment when Brazilian music was really coming into its own during the bossa nova generation, yet still had some ties to earlier styles as well – which means that in addition to the sorts of bossa tunes you'd expect, you'll also hear versions of songs by Horace Silver, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin! The selection of cuts is nice – and the record begins with some straighter jazz numbers that evolve into bossa – in a lineup that includes "Nana" by Os Cobras, "O Menino Desce O Morro" by Milton Banana, "Samba In The Perrotoquei" by Bola Sete, "I Got Rhythm" by Dick Farney, "Nica's Dream" by Sergio Mendes, "Love For Sale" by Rubens Bassini, "Copacabana" by Brazilian Jazz Quartet, "Esperanca" by Tamba Trio, "Influencia Do Jazz" by Ed Lincoln, and "O Morro Nao Tem Vez" by Joao Donato.
