GenesisFoxtrot (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Charisma/Rhino, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 24.98
A fantastic classic from Genesis – a record that really has the early version of the group at their height – able to spin out longform instrumental passages that would go onto shape a generation of proggers who tried to copy their sound – amidst lyrical moments that really have Peter Gabriel hitting his imaginative stride! The set's worth it alone for the amazing side-length "Supper's Ready" – a track so trippy, it's completely different than the Phil Collins-led era of Genesis – and the record features so many other great moments – like the commentary on urban housing that is "Get Em Out By Friday", the soaring keyboard-driven "Watcher Of The Skies", and the majestic "Can Utility & The Coastliners". All that and one of the strangest covers of all time too! LP, Vinyl record album

EsotericEgoclapper (translucent blue colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Fly Casual, 2007. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 27.98
MC Esoteric's excellent solo album – coming after years of honing his skills in the Boston underground duo 7L & Esoteric (the former playing a guest roll on cuts & production on a few tracks) – and a few years before doing great things with the 7L & Inspectah Deck in Czarface! The slyly comic book-inspired hip hop of Czarface clearly has it's genesis in fits and starts on Egoclapper, laced by clever soundtrack dialog samples that should appeal to MF Doom's material at the time, but it's straight forward exciting and forcefully delivered gritty hip hop too, making a pretty great mix of hard hitting and eccentric. Includes the title track, "Warlords" with Celph Titled, Trademarc & Karma, "Mind On Fire", "Tranquilizer", "Street Stigma" with Rack Lo", "Incredible Hulk Rap" with Termanology, "Boston Garden Rap" with Raydar Ellis & Jawn LP, Vinyl record album

Fairport ConventionUnhalfbricking (US pressing) ... LP
A&M, 1969. Near Mint- ... $29.99
The record where it all really came together for Fairport Convention – the point at which the already-great group really stepped forward to become something totally unique! By this point all the key elements are firmly in place – sublime vocals from the great Sandy Denny, amazing guitar and songwriting from the young Richard Thompson, and an overall approach to the music that was way more than folk – in the way the elements are layered together carefully, and build in these hypnotic lines that are completely amazing – almost modal in conception, but much more subtle – and the quality that really makes their work so unique. Titles include "Genesis Hall", "Autopsy", "Cajun Woman", "Percy's Song", "Million Dollar Bash", and "Who Knows Where The Time Goes". LP, Vinyl record album

Peter GabrielPeter Gabriel 1 – Car ... LP
Atco, 1977. Very Good+ ... $9.99
The first solo set from Peter Gabriel – and a record that was quite a surprise upon initial release – kind of a stripped-down variant of the energy that Gabriel brought to his early work with Genesis, presented in a nicely lean way that allowed for all the best focus on his key ideas! The style here is light years away from the last moments Gabriel was with Genesis – although there's still a few nice touches of the Lamb Lies Down generation, too – and the vocals are more pointed, more focused, and arguably more personal too. Instrumentation holds up better than you might expect – especially as there was no move at all to nod to the nascent punk generation – and titles include the hit "Solsbury Hill", plus "Modern Love", "Slowburn", "Humdrum", "Waiting For The Big One", "Down The Dolce Vita", and "Here Comes The Flood". LP, Vinyl record album

Artless Cuckoo (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy ... $28.99
Sweet Fender Rhodes and funky fusion from a very cool German group of the 70s – one we're not sure we've ever heard on record before, but who sound really wonderful here in an unreleased set of tapes from German radio! The group have a great way of moving between mellow funk and more jamming moments – with a lineup that includes Uwe Ziss on flute and saxes, Wilhelm Hovelmann on guitar, and Mario F Demonte on the great electric piano lines that hold the whole thing together – and which sound especially nice next to the flute! Titles include "Biting My Time", "Love Is Genesis", "Jazzgang", "I'm Always Right", and "Himalaya". LP, Vinyl record album

Shawn Lee's Incredible Tabla BandTabla Rock ... CD
Ubiquity, 2012. Used ... $12.99
Incredible tabla funk from Shawn Lee and his Incredible Tabla Band – inspired by both classic drum breaks and Indian tabla and sitar-flavored psych funk – a full on covers set of the landmark Bongo Rock album (and more) by Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band in this mad mode! The genesis of this album was simply Lee's desire to cover the standout track "Apache", but, Shawn isn't the kind of artist to stick a toe into a project – nope, he goes right off the conceptual deep end, putting his own creative stamp on music that's proudly adherent to whatever the classic inspiration. It's especially amazing here – what could have been a mere novelty covers album of what you could argue was originally something of a novelty album (novel, though furiously creative and influential) is perhaps the most brilliant moment of Shawn Lee's career-to-date! Drum and percussion heavy genius that helped form the blueprint of hip hop – fused with buzzing and thumping Indian funk-styled grooves – pure genius from Shawn Lee with Prithpal Raiput on tablas, Andy Ross on saxes & flutes, Dom Glover on trumpet and Mick Talbot on Hammond. Includes "Let There Be Drums", "Apache", "Bongolia", "Last Bongo In Belgium", "Dueling Bongos", "Inna Gadda Da Vida", "Raunchy '73" and "Bongo Rock '73" – all covers from the original 1973 version of the Bongo Rock album – plus "Sing Sing Sing" and "Pipeline" from the '74 follow up. ✨✧ MF DoomOperation Doomsday (with bonus poster) ... LP
Metal Face, 1999. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $20.99 25.98
The first full length from MF Doom –setting the standard for underground hip hop to come! On this modern classic, Doom caps off the 90s with more jazzy soul in the beats, and some semblance of straightforward, if busy rhyme mastery from Doom & his guests – taken to the outer limits! What really pushes this one into legendary status are how well he works with creaky comic adventure samples, and it's the genesis of Doom's metal face supervillain persona. Looking back, it's clearly the building blocks for deeper insanity to come, but this one has a sound structure. Probably his best album. Includes "Doomsday", "Rhymes Like Dimes" feat Cucumber Slice, "The Finest" feat Tommy Gun, "Go With The Flow", "Tick Tick", "Hey!", "The Mic", "Dead Bent", "?" feat Kurious and much more – including all of the classic skits (yeah, we said it. . .classic skits, creative sci fi sample genius that are creative as the proper tracks) – with 19 tracks in all. Blue Note, 1965. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent set of some fairly out material – performed by Shorter with a group that includes Freddie Hubbard, Grachan Moncur, James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, and a rare appearance by his brother Alan on flugelhorn! At times, the record builds into a sound that's freer and more challenging than on some of Shorter's other albums from the time – but it does so in more of the "new thing" mode that you'd hear on records from the time by Jackie McLean or Moncur, with an overall sense of purpose that really keeps the message clear. Features all original compositions by the Shorter brothers – and cuts include "Chaos", "Face Of The Deep", "Mephistopheles", and "Genesis". CD

Jake Yunza (editior)Fun – The Social Practice Of Nightlife In NYC ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2013. New Copy ... $6.99 39.95
A really striking book on the world of nightlife in New York – one that's put together in a way that's almost as vivid as the experience itself! The volume is half art book, half essays – and starts with a selection of writings by Michael Musto, Claire Bishop, Michael Alig, Genesis P Orridge, and others – then moves into many more pages of artwork on clubs, performance spaces, clubbers, performers, flyers, and other aspects of the scene – presented in a variety of styles, often with text juxtaposed alongside – which makes even more standard photos feel like pluggers for an event! The images move at very rapid speed – almost as if you're in a whirlwind on an endless night of clubbing – and the heavy book is softcover, full color, and 334 pages in all. Book

✨✧ Museo RosenbachZarathustra (orange vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Ricordi/RCA (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A proggy gem from the early 70s Italian scene – and a record that's awash in all the elements that made some of the best of that scene so wonderful! These guys take off strongly from the territory that Genesis and Yes hit a few years before – really soaring in their own direction, but in terms of heady lyricism and some especially well-crafted instrumentation – lots of keyboards, including Hammond and mellotron – searing guitars, and smashingly sharp changes on the drums and basslines – complex, but always down to earth, with a quality that holds on strong throughout the entire album. A shining prog rock jewel – with the side-long "Zarathustra", and the cuts "Degli Uomini", "Della Natura", and "Dell'Eterno Ritorno". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CitiRoller Disco (with bonus tracks) ... CD
De-Lite/Solid (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Were there ever two words that improved the qualities of each other than "roller" and "disco"? We think not – and this album's more than proof of that! Most of this set is more straight disco than the "roller" version implied by the title – but a few of the best cuts have that slower-than-disco groove that we love from the roller skating years, a slightly funky approach that's always quite infectious – and which has just the right amount of boogie to make us bounce! The group's a trio – with Lee Genesis on lead vocals, and two supporting female singers – and titles include the straight soul number "Good Enough For You", plus the cuts "Power Play", "Disco Strut", and "Can You Do It On Skates". CD features two bonus tracks – original single versions of "Roller Disco" and "Heart Attack". CD

✨✧ John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. ✨✧ Steve Swell Quinet Soul TravelersAstonishments ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most righteous albums we've ever heard from trombonist Steve Swell – a great follow-up to his Soul Travelers album – and, like that one, done in this majestic mode that hearkens back to the hippest sounds of the loft jazz years! Swell's group is fantastic – with Jemeel Moondoc on alto, Dave Burrell on piano, William Parker on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums – and Leena Conquest is on a number of tracks on voice, but reciting some very hip material, instead of singing – a side of her talents that's even more powerful than before, and which really helps shape the tension between structure and freedom in the tunes! Titles include "Sketch 7", "Seldom Heard", "For Mondays", "Being Here", "Morphogenesis", and "Astonishments". CD
