GenesisNursery Cryme ... CD
Atlantic, 1971. Used ... $4.99
An early masterpiece from Genesis – the kind of visionary record that really set them apart from the rest of their generation – an incredible building-up in sound from their previous two albums, and proof that Peter Gabriel's talents were finally getting focused in the right direction! Keyboards cascade heavily – hitting Yes-like proportions, but with more structure, too – as time changes abound, scene changes match the energy of theme-changes – and the whole album falls into place beautifully, but with plenty of surprises along the way. Every song is a compelling little story – from the leadoff "Musical Box", to the spooky "Return Of The Giant Hogweed", and the playful "Harold The Barrel" – with sweeter moments that include "For Absent Friends" and "Harlequin" – just hinting at the crossover ballad style the group would embrace later, but without any of the cloying commerciality at all. ✨✧ Elvin JonesGenesis ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Elvin Jones rose to fame in the company of one of the greatest saxophone players ever – the mighty John Coltrane – and his post-Coltrane work like this really continues a keen respect for the role of the reeds in jazz – and really does a lot to push it forward as well! There's a compelling edge to the record that's light years from Elvin's work with Coltrane – a completely new sensibility that can be spacious one minute, extremely powerful the next – and quite possibly realized to its fullest potential here, thanks to the mindblowing contributions of Dave Liebman on tenor and soprano sax, Frank Foster on tenor and flute, and Joe Farrell on alto and soprano sax. All three players work together on each track – and all shift reeds throughout the session – opening up majestically with inspiration from Elvin's drums, and some wonderful work from Gene Perla on bass. The sound is beyond easy categorization or simple style – and the record's filled with wonderful titles that include "PP Phoenix", "For All The Other Times", "Three Card Monty", and "Cecilia Is Love". John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. Sister Love/Jazzaggression (Estonia), 1974. New Copy ... $24.99
A really unique album by an all-female jazz group from the LA scene of the 70s – a group who were part of the feminist collective of artists distributed by Olivia Records, but who are maybe even more righteous than the rest! The group mix together jazz and poetry – the latter of which is both sung and spoken, and often has these wonderful ways of tying together personal desires and inclinations with larger political issues – all while the rest of the combo is laying down a spiritual current of piano, percussion, bass, and strong solos on tenor and flute from Cyndy Mason Fitzpatrick. The centerpiece of the record is the extended suite "The Common Woman" – based around the poetry of Judy Grahan – and that's balanced out by a fair bit more instrumental work at other times on the set – on titles that include "Degradation", "Mi Amor", "Genesis", "SAd Are The Days", and "1234". Grunt, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
The mid 70s solo record by Jorma Kaukonen – the legendary guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna – and a really great, sort of back to basics acoustic set! In direct contrast to some of the more bombastic rock coming out of the Jefferson Airplane camp in the early 70s, those one has a rootsier psych folk vibe. Holds up well decades later, too – with titles that include "Genesis", "I'll Be All Right", "Song For The North Star", "Anotehr Man Done Gone" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Wynton Marsalis & OthersMotherless Brooklyn – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... LP
Water Tower, 2019. New Copy ... $25.99
A really beautiful soundtrack from Wynton Marsalis – but one that has an unusual genesis too! The core theme of the film was composed by Thom Yorke of Radiohead – who sings on one very short, spare take on the melody – which is then expanded by Wynton's trumpet into a number of other variations, and some of Marsalis' own songs too – with help from Isaiah Thompson on piano, Jerry Weldon on tenor, Ted Nash on alto, and both Joe Farnsworth and Willie Jones III on drums. Titles include "Blues Walk", "Motherless Brooklyn Theme", "On A Misty Night", "Delilah", "Jump Monk", "Daily Battles", and "Woman In Blue" – and the set also features two vintage cuts – "Round Midnight" by Babs Gonzales, and "Relaxing With Lee" by Charlie Parker. ✨✧ Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-StarsJazz Structures ... LP
Philips, 1960. Very Good ... $4.99
An unusual album from the west coast scene of the 60s – recorded under the name of the Lighthouse All Stars, but featuring arrangements and compositions by Bob Cooper – who was the real driving force behind the set. Conte Candoli's in the group on trumpet – and other players include Buddy Colette and Bud Shank on alto and flute, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Victor Feldman on vibes and percussion, Stan Levey on drums, and Cooper himself on tenor. The overall sound is relatively tightly constrained, in a "jazz suite" mode – but there's plenty of room for solo space on the set, and Cooper's writing is as fluid as his ability is strong to bring these players together as conductor. The set's got a really great feel that gets way past some of the more academic west coast work of its sort – with a lot more soul than you'd expect. Titles include "Rain Blues", "Genesis (pt II)", "Architectonics", "Directional Suite", and "The Worker". LP, Vinyl record album

Tangerine DreamPink Years Albums (Electronic Meditation/Alpha Centauri/Zeit/Atem) (4CD set) ... CD
Ohr/Reactive (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99
For great albums from Tangerine Dream – each packaged here in tiny LP sleeves, with a small poster too! Electronic Meditation has a title that's a perfect summation of the way that Tangerine Dream approached their music – and it also really describes what made them so unique at the time! Rather than try to push the boundaries of electronics with a sense of force or urgency, the trio of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze, and Conrad Schnitzler really take their time – working inside an abandoned factory to create the sounds for this initial debut – acting as their own producers, too – really starting the strong legacy of German experimental recordings of the 70s, in which the studio was as important as the instruments themselves! Given that Schulze would later work in Ash Ra Tempel and on his own famous records – and Schnitzler soon formed Kluster – there's a lot of genesis going on here. But the whole thing's also pretty darn great on its own, even without the history – and has a much darker edge than some later work by Tangerine Dream. Titles include "Genesis", "Journey Through A Burning Brain", "Resurrection", "Ashes To Ashes", and "Cold Smoke". Alpha Centauri is pure genius from Tangerine Dream – a record that came out right at the start of the 70s, and immediately cemented the group's reputation as one of the most inventive electronic acts of the decade! The tracks are long and spacious here – very much in the territory of some of the group's Krautrock contemporaries, but with more of a sense of openness, and patience – as they never rush things at all, while layering together their unique blends of guitar, organ, percussion, flute, and anything else they can think of – even a coffee machine! Chris Franke handles the electronics, but Steve Schroyder abstracts them with "several echo machines" – while Edgar Froese helps them all remember to keep things tuneful at times. Tracks include "Sunrise In The Third System", "Fly & Collision Off Comas Sola", and the side-long "Alpha Centauri". Zeit is one of the moodiest early albums from Tangerine Dream – a record that really lives up to the eclipse on the cover! There's maybe more "bottom" here than some of their other work – swirling shadows that resonate with some of the more isolated sounds – almost as if the group is trying to invent the 4AD production style, years ahead of its time! Titles include "Birth Of The Liquide Plejades", "Nebulous Dawn", "Origin Of Supernatural Probabilities", and "Zeit". Atem has long tracks that maybe bring a stronger current of noise to the music of Tangerine Dream – a set that follows the longer abstractions of the Zeit album, but with even weirder elements too! The sound isn't exactly pre-industrial, but also isn't far off either – and titles include "Atem", "Fauna Geni", "Circulation Of Events", and "Wahn". CD

Throbbing Gristle20 Jazz Funk Greats ... CD
Mute, 1979. Used ... $6.99
The title might seem like a joke – given Throbbing Gristle's reputation for intense noise and dark sounds – but at another level, it's actually a great fit for the spirit of the record too! The sound here is a lot leaner than before – almost as if TG is focusing in on the best elements that made their earlier performances so great – exposing a hidden talent for a song, a groove, and even an occasional melody – in ways that almost refine and filter down the whole of German 70s electronics into a spirit of post-punk expression! Subject matter is still pretty darn dark, and vocals are as creepy as ever – thanks Genesis P – but there's also more of the electronics that Chris & Cosey would soon explore on their own. Titles include "20 Jazz Funk Greats", "Beachy Head", "Still Walking", "Tanith", "Convincing People", "Exotica", "Hot On The Hells Of Love", "Persuasion", "Walkabout", "What A Day", and "Six Six Sixties". Bob Bert is a lot more than just a drummer and this a lot more than a mere memoir, with tons of Bert's photographs from the early 80s NYC downtown scene, interviews and photos from his great 90s DIY zine BB Gun and lots more! Bert played in early era Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks and more, and after a brief and humble look back at his childhood influences, the book quickly turns into kind of a time capsule of the late 70s & 80s underground through his own eyes and camera. It includes snapshots of legends performing or hanging out at Mudd Club, Max's and CBGBs we'd probably never see without this book, behind the scenes pics with Sonic Youth in their early days and tales of Bert's time with Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Bewitched and other bands. Also vital are the compiled BB Gun pieces, where Bert interviewed and photographed artists as varied as Dead Moon, Lydia Lunch (who pens the forward for this book), Nancy Sinatra, Genesis P Orridge, Elliot Smith, James Chance and lots of others. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic little collection – and one that's maybe a lot more fun than you might expect! There's little material that's actually avant, and just a few that might fall into the more boring sides of the art rock spectrum – and instead, the set brings together work from the psych and early prog years by a host of British acts who were really willing to take a chance with their music! There's more than a few big names here, and a few big hits too – but those cuts are mixed with overlooked gems and album tracks that really get at the amazing creative explosion that was happening in British music at the time – a moment when things were sounding so different than just a few years before – but results that were surprisingly groovy and catchy too. As with other box sets on the Grapefruit label, the track selection is superb – and the whole thing comes with song-by-song notes that get at the history and special quality of each number – amidst 79 titles by artists who include Deep Feeling, Open Road, 9:30 Fly, Gnome Street, Matching Mole, Nirvana, Comus, Matching Mole, The Coxhill/Bedford Duo, Spring, The Velvet Frogs, Bachenkel, Third Ear Band, Woody Kern, Genesis, The Riot Squad, Dantalian's Chariot, Mighty Baby, Cressida, Rustic Hinge, Eyes Of Blue, Fuschia, Blonde On Blonde, and Ron Geesin. ✨✧ Beach BoysFriends/20/20 ... CD
Capitol, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing little CD – one that features 2 of the best post-Smile Beach Boys albums in one package, plus some excellent bonus cuts too! Friends is a completely incredible record – one that's built around small, short, sweet songs that are almost an adult take on themes of relationships first explored in Pet Sounds – produced with a homier and more personal approach that's really great. Classics on the album include "Busy Doin Nothin", "Transcendental Meditation", "Little Bird", "Anna Lee The Healer", "Be Here In The Morning", "Friends", and "Wake The World". 20/20 is a slightly lesser album, but still pretty nice too – and is noteworthy as the repository of some bits that were destined to originally appear on Smile, and never made the Smiley Smile cut – as well as the genesis of some of the ideas that would come out more fully on the excellent Sunflower and Surf's Up albums. And in fact, if the Beach Boys had never cut another album, 20/20 would be a masterpiece – and it's only through comparison with their real classics that it only weakens a bit. Tracks include the sublime "Cabinessence", plus "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Be With Me", "All I Want To Do", "I Want To Sleep", and "The Nearest Faraway Place". And if that's not enough, the CD features excellent bonus cuts like "Break Away", "Celebrate The News", "We're Together Again", and a cover of "Walk On By"! CD

Atco, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The first solo set from Peter Gabriel – and a record that was quite a surprise upon initial release – kind of a stripped-down variant of the energy that Gabriel brought to his early work with Genesis, presented in a nicely lean way that allowed for all the best focus on his key ideas! The style here is light years away from the last moments Gabriel was with Genesis – although there's still a few nice touches of the Lamb Lies Down generation, too – and the vocals are more pointed, more focused, and arguably more personal too. Instrumentation holds up better than you might expect – especially as there was no move at all to nod to the nascent punk generation – and titles include the hit "Solsbury Hill", plus "Modern Love", "Slowburn", "Humdrum", "Waiting For The Big One", "Down The Dolce Vita", and "Here Comes The Flood". At times, the record builds into a sound that's freer and more challenging than on some of Shorter's other albums from the time – but it does so in more of the "new thing" mode that you'd hear on records from the time by Jackie McLean or Moncur, with an overall sense of purpose that really keeps the message clear. GAD (Poland), 1971/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Classic cuts from a famous Polish TV show – mostly pulled from the rich catalog of the German Sonoton sound library! The music here is very heavy on keyboards and tight, dramatic grooves – music that's often in the best modes that so few sound libraries could manage at the time – a style that still hangs on to the higher quality inspirations from 70s funk or soundtrack material, without as much of the clunk that more commercial libraries ran into. Things are also usually full and focused, too – still quite electric and electronic, but without any too-dreamy soundscapes or new-agey bits. The book features full notes on the show and the music in both English and Polish – and titles include "Sound Tide" and "Speedy" by The Milan Pilar Group, "That's Fancy 1" and "Threat To Research" by Sammy Burdson, "Biopulse 2" and "Genesis 1" by Claude Larson, "Back From Wonderland" and "Alexandria" by Mladen Franko, "Star Drops" and "Foreground" by Jeff Newmann, "International Scoop" by Ted Atking & Alain French, and "Touch Tone Keyboard" by Sam Sklar & Gus Galbraith. Also includes one older British cut – "Visitation" by Mike Vickers – used as the main theme of the show! CD
