Atlantic, 1980. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
An overlooked gem from Genesis – a record that maybe forms a perfect bridge between their early concept years and the tighter mode that drove them into the 80s – and a set that really has the trio version of the group finding their way forward! There's some of the catchiness of Abacab to come, but there's also more of a sense of scope – that long form instrumental exploration that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks continued from the early years – honed into more focus, and driven by the increasingly strong drum talents of Phil Collins! Phil's a few years away from being an MTV figure here – and is instead more of a proud progger, finding a way to bring things into tighter energy – and really balance the whole thing beautifully. Titles include the hits "Turn It On Again" and "Misunderstanding" – balanced with "Duke's Travels", "Dutchess", "Behind The Lines", "Heathaze", and "Cul De Sac". LP, Vinyl record album

Atco, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Life after Peter Gabriel – with Phil Collins doing a surprisingly great job on vocals – free from all the tripe of later years! The group are still very much in the mode of their early prog years, but balance things out with a few catchier tunes – a mode that's a bit like the Selling England By The Pound album, sans Gabriel. Collins is learning how to express himself soulfully, but not in a commercial way – and the few off moments are more than balanced with some wonderfully tight instrumental work – on tracks that include "Dance On A Volcano", "Robbery Assault & Battery", "Ripples", "Trick Of The Tail", and "Mad Man Moon". A really breakthrough moment for Genesis – the first album to really unleash the majesty of the group in the Peter Gabriel generation! The songs here are longer than before, and show the expansive vision that the group only barely cracked with their debut – taken into longer-form songs that are a perfect showcase for Gabriel's mad vision and theatricality. The set starts with the soulful "Looking For Someone", the builds energy slowly, to end with the careening "The Knife" – possibly the real standout cut on the record. In between, other cuts include "White Mountain", "Visions Of Angels", "Stagnation", and "Dusk". CD

✨✧ Elvin JonesGenesis ... LP
Blue Note, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Elvin Jones rose to fame in the company of one of the greatest saxophone players ever – the mighty John Coltrane – and his post-Coltrane work like this really continues a keen respect for the role of the reeds in jazz – and really does a lot to push it forward as well! There's a compelling edge to the record that's light years from Elvin's work with Coltrane – a completely new sensibility that can be spacious one minute, extremely powerful the next – and quite possibly realized to its fullest potential here, thanks to the mindblowing contributions of Dave Liebman on tenor and soprano sax, Frank Foster on tenor and flute, and Joe Farrell on alto and soprano sax. All three players work together on each track – and all shift reeds throughout the session – opening up majestically with inspiration from Elvin's drums, and some wonderful work from Gene Perla on bass. The sound is beyond easy categorization or simple style – and the record's filled with wonderful titles that include "PP Phoenix", "For All The Other Times", "Three Card Monty", and "Cecilia Is Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty/UA pressing, with Van Gelder stamp – a nice copy!)

✨✧ Wayne ShorterSecond Genesis (Le Jazz pressing) ... CD
Vee Jay/Le Jazz (UK), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful pre-Blue Note session that was recorded by Vee Jay in the early 60's, but was never released at the time. The set features a totally fantastic tight quartet with Art Blakey playing hard hard hard drums, Cedar Walton jamming on piano, and Shorter blowing away in a perfectly magical way on a bunch of great originals. The material's fantastic, the sound is great, and the whole thing's one of Shorter's best albums ever! This was supposed to be Shorter's 3rd album for the label, and who knows, it might have saved them and kept him away from Blue Note if it was released, but such was not the fate of the session – as it only ever came out on vinyl in this mid 70s release on the short-lived Vee Jay International label. Tracks include "Tenderfoot", "The Albatross", and "Ruby & The Pearl". CD

CitiRoller Disco ... LP
De-Lite, 1979. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Were there ever two words that improved the qualities of each other than "roller" and "disco"? We think not – and this album's more than proof of that! Most of this set is more straight disco than the "roller" version implied by the title – but a few of the best cuts have that slower-than-disco groove that we love from the roller skating years, a slightly funky approach that's always quite infectious – and which has just the right amount of boogie to make us bounce! The group's a trio – with Lee Genesis on lead vocals, and two supporting female singers – and titles include the straight soul number "Good Enough For You", plus the cuts "Power Play", "Disco Strut", and "Can You Do It On Skates". Cinedelic (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Cool keyboards and lots of sweet spacey touches – as you might guess from the cover art of this rare Italian soundtrack from the 70s! Mario Molino brings in some moogy bits that definitely fit the theme of the record, but mixes them up with a wonderful array of other sounds too – some very compressed lines on flute, a bit of strutting acoustic guitar, some chromatic piano, and other nice touches that offset the bolder electronic moments – which seem to come to the forefront especially strongly on side two. Titles include "Tempesta", "Tecnologia Moderna IIa Parte", "Le Pleiadi", "Tema Spazio", "Cattura Satellite", and "Finale Titoli". Special bonus – one track is a cool flute instrumental of a Genesis song! LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne ShorterAll Seeing Eye (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1965. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
One of the more avant-oriented 60s sessions cut by Wayne Shorter for Blue Note – a record that's not entirely part of the "new thing" generation, but which definitely has Shorter pushing the boundaries from his previous records for the label! The lineup here is a key batch of players who can handle both sides of the fence – inside and outside – Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Grachan Moncur on trombone, Herbie Hancock on piano, James Spaulding on alto, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – all players who were really breaking their own boundaries at the time. The set also features work from Wayne's Brother on one track – avant trumpeter Alan Shorter, who's only known for a few records under his own name, and who really brings a great sound to play here. At times, the record builds into a sound that's freer and more challenging than on some of Shorter's other albums from the time – but less in a free jazz mode, than with an overall sense of purpose that really keeps the message clear. Features all original compositions by the Shorter brothers – and cuts include "Chaos", "Face Of The Deep", "Mephistopheles", and "Genesis". LP, Vinyl record album

Tangerine DreamElectronic Meditation (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tiger Bay (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
The title's a perfect summation of the way that Tangerine Dream approached their music – and it also really describes what made them so unique at the time! Rather than try to push the boundaries of electronics with a sense of force or urgency, the trio of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze, and Conrad Schnitzler really take their time – working inside an abandoned factory to create the sounds for this initial debut – acting as their own producers, too – really starting the strong legacy of German experimental recordings of the 70s, in which the studio was as important as the instruments themselves! Given that Schulze would later work in Ash Ra Tempel and on his own famous records – and Schnitzler soon formed Kluster – there's a lot of genesis going on here. But the whole thing's also pretty darn great on its own, even without the history – and has a much darker edge than some later work by Tangerine Dream. Titles include "Genesis", "Journey Through A Burning Brain", "Resurrection", "Ashes To Ashes", and "Cold Smoke". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herbie Hancock & The HeadhuntersPaul's Mall Jazz Workshop Boston – November 1973 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great live set from a time when Herbie Hancock was just getting started with his Headhunters group – that amazing combo that featured Bennie Maupin on reeds, Paul Jackson on bass, and Mike Clark on drums! The style here is almost more open and loose than on the studio albums by the group – with Herbie snaking along on these wonderful keyboard solos – while the group lay back wonderfully in the groove, and never force things at all. The sound quality is strong – the performance was initially recorded for radio – and, at some point, the recording even loses the signal from the club, and plays a commercial for Genesis in the middle! Titles include "Watermelon Man", "Chameleon", "Sly", "Butterfly", and a few spoken bits by Herbie. CD

The volume is half art book, half essays – and starts with a selection of writings by Michael Musto, Claire Bishop, Michael Alig, Genesis P Orridge, and others – then moves into many more pages of artwork on clubs, performance spaces, clubbers, performers, flyers, and other aspects of the scene – presented in a variety of styles, often with text juxtaposed alongside – which makes even more standard photos feel like pluggers for an event! The images move at very rapid speed – almost as if you're in a whirlwind on an endless night of clubbing – and the heavy book is softcover, full color, and 334 pages in all. Book

✨✧ VariousBanquet – The Underground Sounds Of 1969 (3CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1969. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little set that heralds the beginning of a whole new generation in music – post-psych sounds from the year of 1969 – a time when the revolution had cooled a bit, but new waves of creative activity were really bubbling underground in the UK scene – as all these many groups and singers were striding forth to make their own sorts of sounds, after borrowing bits from others in previous years! The music here is more compact than later prog, but equally jamming – and some of the artists were born from blues and R&B inspirations, but are really moving into their own territory here – helping forge styles that would set the pace for so much more music to come in the 70s! The groups aren't completely obscure – most were recording for the hipper sides of bigger labels – but the tracks here often mark a point when they were just leaping off, a bit before hitting bigger fame – mixed with a few others that never hit the heights later on. As always with these boxes from Cherry Red/Esoteric, the presentation, set list, and notes are great – supporting 52 tracks from groups that include Colosseum, High Tide, Bloodwyn Pig, Jack Bruce, Pete Brown & Piblokto, Free, Jethro Tull, Genesis, East Of Eden, Man, Fat Mattress, Locomotive, Eyes Of Blue, Fairport Convention, The Deviants, Sunforest, Taste, Ten Years After, Mighty Baby, Michael Chapman, and many more! ✨✧ Steve Swell Quinet Soul TravelersAstonishments ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most righteous albums we've ever heard from trombonist Steve Swell – a great follow-up to his Soul Travelers album – and, like that one, done in this majestic mode that hearkens back to the hippest sounds of the loft jazz years! Swell's group is fantastic – with Jemeel Moondoc on alto, Dave Burrell on piano, William Parker on bass, and Gerald Cleaver on drums – and Leena Conquest is on a number of tracks on voice, but reciting some very hip material, instead of singing – a side of her talents that's even more powerful than before, and which really helps shape the tension between structure and freedom in the tunes! Titles include "Sketch 7", "Seldom Heard", "For Mondays", "Being Here", "Morphogenesis", and "Astonishments". CD
