Astrud GilbertoSeptember 17, 1969 ... LP
Verve, 1969. Near Mint- ... $49.99
One of the grooviest records ever from the lovely Astrud Gilberto – a session that beautifully mixes her usual bossa nova with bits of Sunshine Pop and other hip late 60s grooves – all in a mode that really takes off a lot more than other Gilberto albums on Verve! The style here is really wonderful – upbeat, soaring, and joyous on most of the best numbers – a real transformation of Astrud's usual groove, and a great departure from too familiar bossa nova material. The record's been a little bit lost to the shifting sands of time – possibly because it's not as iconic as it might be – but we totally love it, and really consider it one of Gilberto's best moments ever in the studio. Arrangements are by Albert Gorgoni – and titles include a fantastic long jamming version of the track "Beginnings" that sounds completely different from the Chicago hit, and which is a stunning dancefloor groover! The album also includes an English version of "Canto De Osshana" called "Let's Go", plus a groovy uptempo version of the Bee Gee's "Holiday", and the great cut "Love Is Stronger Than We" from the soundtrack to A Man & A Woman. Other tracks include "Think Of Rain", "A Million Miles Away Behind The Door", "Don't Leave Me Baby", and "Summer Sweet (part 1, part 2 to be continued)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label promo. Cover has light ring & edge wear and a DJ sticker on back.)

Bee GeesBee Gees 1st ... LP
Atco, 1967. Very Good ... $11.99
Sublime sounds from The Bee Gees – a near-perfect bit of 60s pop, and a record that would set the scene for so many others to come! The vocals are what you've always known from the Bros Gibb, but the production is what really sends us – complicated, baroque, and filled with these completely compelling instrumental and studio twists that make the already-charming lyrics even more lovely! Titles include the classics "Holiday" and "Turn Of The Century" – plus "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "In My Own Time", "Red Chair Fade Away", "Close Another Door", and "To Love Somebody". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label Broadway pressing. Cover has light wear. Vinyl plays with a click on "Red Chair Fade Away" &"One Minute Woman".)

✨✧ Bee Gees, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, & OthersSaturday Night Fever ... LP
RSO, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". Evan GeesmanNewagesewage (with bonus download) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2020. New Copy ... $6.99 21.98
The cover and title might seem a bit trashy, but the music's much richer than they lead you to expect – a sensitively-crafted batch of instrumentals and vocal numbers that seem to tie together a contemporary Cali soul aesthetic with traces of the 80s underground from overseas! Some tunes almost feel as if cold wave elements have been warmed up to sunnier soul – but the vocals are always understated and somewhat processed – maybe somewhere in the Stones Throw or Innovative Leisure mode – but also a lot more personal and sensitive at times. Titles include "Testify", "Pari", "Roseberg", "Buppy", "English", "Maybeness", "Turmeric", and "Symmetry". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tommy McGeeI'm A Stranger (Positive Negative plus bonus tracks) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 24.99
A treasure trove of rare soul work from Tommy McGee – a fantastic sweet soul singer from the Michigan scene of the 70s, and one who should have been huge – judging by the quality of the work on this set! The core of the package is Tommy's rare 1976 album Positive Negative – a record that feels like some of the best All-Platinum/Stang New Jersey soul of the period – laidback, but with an edge – mellow, but slowly funky too – with Tommy's sweet vocals at the core of the whole thing, cascading gently around some really well-penned tunes! The set also includes a range of rare singles, too – some with Tommy in the lead, some by his TMGs band – a wonderful mix of rare Michigan funk and soul, all handled with the usual rock-solid Numero Group presentation. Titles include "What Can I Do", "Aggravation", "Give & Take", "The Hatch", "Now That I Have You", "Stay With Me", "Come On", "To Make You Happy", "Make Sure", "Take Me Home", "Guilty", and "We Ought To Be Together". ✨✧ Ron GeesinExpoZoom ... LP
Dark Companion (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from Ron Geesin – that unique British talent whose resume involved hundreds of unusual records – from early exotica sides, to work with Pink Floyd, to a number of famous records that feature his talents in the studio! Here, Ron's an experimental musician – creating these short pieces for films that ran in the British pavilion at Expo 70 in Japan – music that's in the territory of some of his darkest, starkest work on record – part sound library, part musique concrete, and part experimental industrial – the last no surprise, as many of these pieces were designed to accompany industrial films! This music has never been released before, and Ron provides notes on all the unique instrumentation throughout – on titles that include "Sprayed Steel", "Petro Forge", "Float Glass A", "End Wall 1", "Concorde", "Rolls Royce", "Blind Landing", and "Robotics". ✨✧ Dionne WarwickHeartbreaker ... LP
Arista, 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Sweet 80s soul from Dionne Warwick – an album that features a fair bit of production work from Barry Gibb – and a sometime sound that definitely shows his presence! The style here is smoother than Dionne in earlier years – with a nice undercurrent of jazz in the instrumentation, one that helps keep things hipper than you might expect – and which avoids a lot of the cliches of early 80s pop soul that might muck things up. Gibb's touch helps things glide nicely at times – a bit of that soulful Bee Gees flourish – and tracks include "Heartbreaker", "It Makes No Difference", "Take The Short Way Home", "Just One More Night", "You Are My Love", and "Our Day Will Come". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MetersLook-Ka Py Py ... LP
Josie, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work from The Meters – and an album that's essential for just about any collection of old school funk! The record's a blueprint for grooves that have been copied for generations to come – yet nobody does it better than these Crescent City kings – working here with a sound that's lean, mean, and completely on the money! The mix of organ, guitar, and bad-walking rhythms is completely sublime throughout – and made even better by massive production from the team of Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint. Imagine taking the best instrumental funk 45s from your collection, then playing them back to back – and you'll get a good idea of the solid sound of this landmark set. Titles include "Funky Miracle", "Oh Calcutta", "Yeah You're Right", "Pungee", "Look-Ka Py Py", "Dry Spell", "Little Old Money Maker", "The Mob", "9 Til 5", "Rigor Mortis", and "This Is My Last Affair". ✨✧ Ronnie BurnsThis Is Ronnie Burns ... CD
Spin/RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Lost 60s gems from Australia's Ronnie Burns – a hell of a great talent, and one whose sense of a song is a perfect bridge between the early Beatles and Bee Gees! The former were a huge influence on Ronnie's sound, and he sung a fair bit of songs by the latter – but he also often works with this nice edge, a sense of darkness, and maybe even some occasional garagey grit next to his well-produced vocals – which are given this fantastic spacious style in the studio, which really lends to the appeal of the tunes! Most work was issued on the Aussie Spin label in the mid 60s, but the quality resonates more strongly with the hipper currents over at EMI/Parlophone – especially in the Hollies side of the spectrum. Titles include "Coalman", "In The Morning", "All The King's Horses", "We Had A Good Thing Goin", "Easy Rider", "Age Of Consent", "So Good Together", "One Bad Thing", "Colaman", "Exit Stage Right", and "Doin The Mod". BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. ✨✧ Rufus ThomasSun Years Plus – His R&B Recordings 1949 to 1956 ... CD
Sun/Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early work from Rufus Thomas – rollicking rhythm & blues sides he cut for Sun Records early on in the pre-rock & roll years – plus more early work cut for the Star Talent, Meteor, Chess and Bullet labels! Given the soul genius that Rufus would later cut for Stax, it's not terribly surprising that his early work is a bit overlooked, but it's great stuff that's worth catching up on – with lots of jumpin' r&b, some slow rolling and gritty tunes, teary-eyed soul and bleary-eyed blues! Bear Family has put together a beautiful package with a thick booklet of notes and photos, with 29 rare tracks: "I'll Be A Good Boy", "I'm So Worried", "Who's That Chick", "Beer Bottle Boogie", "Why Did You Deegee?", "Juanita", "Married Woman", "Bear Cat (The Answer To Hound Dog)", "Tiger Man (King Of The Jungle)", "The Easy Livin' Plan", "I'm Steady Holdin' On" and more. Tabansi/BBE (UK), 1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A nicely-done overview of the Tabansi Records label – an important imprint in Nigeria during the 80s, and a company who really helped change up the groove for a whole new generation! Tabansi had a pretty wide range of styles in their catalog, but that also gave the label a way to merge things together at times – often criss-crossing electro soul with highlife, boogie funk with acoustic elements, and lots more unusual hybrids that have made their records stand out from the pack! The BBE label have been doing a great job with Tabansi reissues, and this set brings together some of the best tracks from that series, plus a few more – 13 titles that include "Akalaka" by Victor Chukwu, "Make You No Mind" by Ebo Taylor, "Zeal Anata" by Zeal Onyia, "Love Vibration" by Nkono Teles, "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo" by Ojo Balingo, "Looking Out For You" by The Mandators, "You're My Solution" by Eric Kol, "Thina Dekula" by Lumingu Puati, "Super Star" by Tony Sarfo & His Funki Afrobisi, and "For The Love Of Money" by Zack & Geebah.
