Balona E Seu ConjuntoGarota De Ipanema ... CD
Paladium/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1967. Used ... $9.99
A rare one from 60s Brazil – and a really great small combo bossa session with some very unusual instrumentation! At their core, the Balona group seem to be a bossa piano trio – but many tracks here have a little "something else" – vibes, electric guitar, or trumpet – often used sparingly but with enough punch to really help shade in the sound of the tunes, even with a few jagged notes. A few numbers have harmony vocals – ala Tamba Trio, but perhaps a bit less modern – and the overall sound is pretty darn great! Titles include "Balonadas", "Aurora", "Meu Balanco", "Balanco 67", "Insensatez", "Tema Para Dois", "Vem Menina", "Duas Contas", and "Ceu E Mar". CD

Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan)Merry Merry Merry Christmas From Captain Kangaroo ... CD
Golden/BMG, Early 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
A merry, merry, merry and groovy groovy groovy Christmas from Captain Kangaroo, Mister Green Jeans and the early 60s cast! For the young or otherwise uninitiated, Captain Kangaroo (played by Bob Keeshin) was a groundbreaking, legendary children's television program that ran from the mid 1950s to the early 80s – with silly charm to spare. This wonderful Christmas record comes from the early part of the 60s, with the grander period production touches to show for it – groovy chorus backing vocals, sound effects, and a big, bright sound – on Christmas classics, original material, fun spoken intros and interludes. Not hokey at all...a real charmer! Includes "Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas", "Jingle Bells", "Santa's Other Reindeer", "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas", "When Santa Claus Gets Your Letter", "Happy Little New Year" and more. CD

Garotas SuecasFeras Miticas ... CD
Garotas Suecas (Brazil), 2014. Used ... $4.99
A contemporary group from Brazil, but one who've got a quirky ear for song styles that takes us back to some of our favorite artists of the 70s! Garotas Suecas work in a style that's a bit post-Tropicalia – almost like some of Tom Ze's music of those years, but maybe not as all-out wild – fused perhaps with a sense of the songwriting strengths of Caetano Veloso in his later years. Yet the work also has a contemporary vibe that's definitely the group's own, too – a sense of spirit that really marks these guys as a group to watch, already even more exciting on this second album than their first. Titles include "New Country", "Bucolismo", "Manchetes Da Solidao", "A Nuvem", "Bicho", and "Charles Chacal". CD

A stunning lost bossa nova soundtrack! The score was penned for the 1967 film Garota De Ipanema (Girl From Ipanema), and although you've heard some of the tracks before in other versions, the overall album is very nice – and is a wonderful tribute to the early days of bossa nova! Jobim and Vinicius perform, as well as Baden Powell, Tamba Trio, Nara Leao, Elis Regina, Ronnie Von, Chico Buarque, and Quarteto Em Cy – and titles include "Por Voce", "Chorino", "Aria Para Se Morrer De Amor", "Rancho Das Namoradas", and "Tema Da Desilusao". Nara LeaoGirl From Ipanema (aka Garota De Ipanema) ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1989. Near Mint- ... $23.99
A beautifully understated album from the legendary Nara Leao – done as a tribute to the bossa generation, with key help from the great Roberto Menescal – who handles the arrangements, plays guitar behind Nara's lovely vocals! Given that Nara's groundbreaking work of the late 60s was almost a challenge to the female bossa singers of the time, the shift's a bit unusual – but also maybe has Nara coming full circle, especially as she brings that wonderful balance of emotion from the early years into play with this music. There's often a current of melancholy – as in her classic Des Anos Depois record – and titles include "O Barquinho", "Wave", "Chega De Saudade", "Aqua De Beber", and "Voce E Eu". A fantastic live set from the great David S Ware – recorded at a key point in his career, when he was moving away from his longtime work with Matthew Shipp on piano, and embracing a new group with Joe Morris on guitar! Morris is wonderful here – really at his best, and driven on by the presence of Ware, bassist William Parker, and drummer Warren Smith – to levels that make his music completely essential, and every bit as intense as Ware on the tenor saxophone! The pairing is completely sublime – even more powerful on record than you can imagine – and the never-issued concert performance features the long tracks "Durga", "Reflection", "Crossing Samsara", and "Namah". ArawakExplosive ... LP
Golden Pavilion (Portugal), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A sweet set of keyboard-heavy tracks – a relatively obscure Italian sound library set from the start of the 80s, and one that's got a stark sound that's very much in the spirit of its cover! The tunes are mighty lean – often keyboards with just a bit of rhythm – a setup that's not that different from some of the horror work of the time, but with a bit more warmth and occasional moments of funk! Plus, the keyboards feel like some off-tuned electric piano – hard to say what, exactly – which makes for a nicely sinister vibe, even when things are groovy. Titles include "Retreat Hell, "D Day", "One Thau", "Cosmolines", "Zap", "Kangaroo Court", "Emergency", "Eggbeater", and "Warhouse". LP, Vinyl record album

DRG, 2006. Used ... $9.99
A slightly traditional set from Brazilian vocalist Gal Costa – but a great one too, and record that demonstrates a new sense of poise and grace in her vocals in recent years! The material here is mostly bossa – work that pre-dates Gal's initial time on record, but which is delivered here with a sensitivity that's wonderful – never too "easy", despite the familiarity of the tunes, and handled with just that right sense of contemplation and expression with which Jobim and others first penned the tunes. Backing is small combo jazz by a quartet with flute, guitar, bass, and drums – and although live, the sound is nicely close up and intimate – really fitting the mood of the songs. Titles include "Fotografia", "Nada Alem", "Corcovado", "Garota De Ipanema", "Wave", "Samba Do Aviao", "A Felicidade", "Triste", and "Ave Maria No Morro". CD

Blue Note, Late 80s/1990s. Used ... $11.99
The name, and the title, give the whole game away – as Eliane performs a set of older Brazilian tunes, all in that wonderful light-hearted style of hers! About half the tracks feature Eliane on vocals, the rest just piano – working with players that include Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette, Marc Johnson, Oscar Castro-Neves, and Nana Vasconcelos. The overall style is a bit bossa, a bit MPB – but overall, mostly jazz-based – as Eliane uses older standards like "Chega De Saudade", "Passarim", "Waters Of March", "Garota De Ipanema", and "Cravo E Canela" to work out some warm and jazzy stylings. The tracks are collected from older albums, but come together very nicely as a unified set! CD

Joao GilbertoAmoroso/Brasil ... CD
Warner, 1977/1981. Used ... $5.99
A collection of two albums that Joao Gilberto did for Warner Brothers in the late 70s/early 80s. Amoroso is some pretty sweet stuff from Joao Gilberto – featuring a core jazz combo playing along with a larger set of arrangements, in a manner that's similar to some of Jobim's work from the 70s. The album features a nice vocal version of Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", plus the tracks "Estate", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". On Brasil, Joao Gilberto meets the younger generation of Brazilian vocalists – Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania – and the four of them lay down some nice jazzy stuff, with all the vocals weaving in and out. Tracks are nice and long, and titles include "Cordeiro De Nana", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Milagre", and "Bahia Com H". Johnny Mandel conducted, and Joao produced. CD

Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Incredibly lovely work from Joyce – quite possibly her best album in years, and a set that's filled with the same scatting brilliance we loved in her classics from the 70s and 80s! The set's done in collaboration with husband/drummer Tutty Moreno – and the pair lead a small combo with a nicely jazzy feel that further enforces the freely soaring lines in Joyce's vocals! Instrumentation includes a shifting array of saxes, flute, clarinet, and piano – plus plenty of warm guitar from Joyce, played with a crystal clear and sensitive sound. Titles include "Garoto", "Sabe Quem", "Tema Pro Baden", "Bodas De Vinil", "Magica", "Penalty", "April Child", "Shangri-La", and a great cover of Tenorio Jr's classic "Embalo". CD

A great one from Nara Leao's "back to bossa" years in the late 80s – a set that has the lovely vocalist working through older American standards – but done here with new lyrics in Portuguese and some great bossa backings from Roberto Menescal! Menescal's airy style proved to be a perfect fit for Nara at this point, and the record's made even better by some guest work from Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica – blowing those blue-tinged notes that always helps to underscore the music with an extra hint of sadness. Titles include "Jamais (The Boy Next Door)", "Coisa Que Lembram Voce (These Foolish Things)", "Como Vai Voce? (What's New?)", and "Garoto Levado (Lullaby Of Birdland)". CD

Accurate, 1991/2007. Used ... $4.99
Early work from Medeski, Martin & Wood – on a more profoundly jazzy tip with bigger arrangements than some of the more electric jazz/funk influenced grooves they became better known for spinning – but still with enough rubbery funk laced within the groove to know just who's at work here! The piano, drums and bass backbone that the trio brings is fleshed out with reeds and brass for bigger sound that's pretty darn sweet. This reissue on MM & W's Indirecto label includes the bonus track "Can't Get What You Want". SF Jazz, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99 35.00
The music of Antonio Carlos Jobim gets some really wonderful treatment here – very far from the bossa roots of most of the tunes, in a free-flowing, highly creative set of arrangements by the members of the group – who then balance out the set with some of their own compositions as well! Jobim's music dominates the first half – arranged by vibist Warren Wolf, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, pianist Edward Simon, tenorist David Sanchez, and trombonist Robin Eubanks – who together really make some special magic with titles that include "Waters Of March", "Garoto", "Inutil Paisagem", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", and "Chega De Saudade". The second half features wonderful originals – almost a track from each member of the group – with titles that include "Another Side", "Variations", "MZ's World", "Insight", "Sketch", and "Unseen Worlds". Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The first we've heard as a leader from saxophonist Alexa Tarantino – a great talent who's really been bubbling under on other ensemble records for the Posi-Tone label, and who's very much at the start of a great career of her own! Alexa plays some mighty nice soprano sax on the album – plus tenor and flute – all with this nice sense of edge in her tone, mixed with a more forward-moving flow – this subtle quality that really keeps things interesting, and which has us held surprisingly rapt whenever one of her horns stretches out in a solo. Most tunes are originals, with this fresh sense of timing that really works with her tone – and the rest of the group features Christian Sands on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – and a few tracks also feature trombone from Nick Finzer. Titles include "Wisp After Wisp", "Breeze", "Face Value", "Seesaw", "Without", "Ready Or Not", "Zingaro", and "Square One". CD

4AD, 1984. Near Mint- ... $59.99
It may end in tears, but it starts in genius – as This Mortal Coil was one of the strongest ideas to ever come from the 4AD label in the 80s – a way of reworking older songs from the legacy of rock and pop, but with the new voice that the label was creating at the time! There's plenty of currents here that resonate with music by Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance – but a presentation that's maybe even deeper overall – woven over a tapestry of tunes that include "Song To The Siren", "Kangaroo", "The Last Ray", "Barramundi", "Another Day", and "A Single Wish". Incredibly beautiful work from this trio of female Brazilian singers – a group who recorded in France in the 90s, but who have a quality that goes right back to some of the best harmonies of the bossa nova generation! Most of the tracks are straight acapella, and feature haunting vocal renditions of tracks like "Aguas De Marco", "Garota De Ipanema", and "A Felicidade" – plus a great English reading of Stevie Wonder & Syreeta's great track "Come Back As A Flower" – and titles that include "Pra La Pra Ca", "Mar E Lua", "Ponto De Macumba", and "Rua Augusta". Produced with excellent fidelity, and a floating haunting sound that's just great! CD

There's no real notes in the set listing dates for the material, and a number of the tracks here sound like re-recordings of the classics – but they're still done in a way that captures the warmth and freshness of the original tunes! Atco, 1970. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! The album's got a nicely exploratory vibe – as the first side features shorter funky cuts, but the second half really stretches out, and features a side-long track that has the Doctor at his most freewheeling – mixing deep currents from soul and blues with all the great ear for studio techniques he'd developed over the years – fused into a sound that's almost a fantasy of a soulful subculture in the swamps. Titles include "Loop Garoo", "Wash Mama Wash", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Mardi Gras Day", and "Chippy Chippy" – plus the side-long "Angola Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto #2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". CD also features 5 bonus tracks with vocals from Astrud Gilberto – "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Only Trust Your Heart", "Corcovado", "Garota De Ipanema", and "Eu E Voce" – all from the Getz Au Go Go album. ✨✧ Joao GilbertoAmoroso ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was bringing real magic to the records of pianist Bill Evans at the time – and music is by a core combo that includes American jazz musicians Ralph Grierson on keyboards and Grady Tate on drums – with some additional larger arrangements from Claus Ogerman, but used in a way that never clutters up the sound at all. Instead, Joao sounds beautiful right up front in the mix – with those sublime raspy vocals, and perfectly-placed lines on acoustic guitar – on titles that include a fabulous reading of "Estate", plus Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", and the tracks "Caminha Cruzados", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". ✨✧ JoyceAnos 80s (Feminina/Agua E Luz/Tardes Cariocas/Saudade Do Futuro/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
EMI/Discobertas (Brazil), Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection – four albums that feature this amazing singer at her height, along with bonus tracks too! First up is Feminina – one of Joyce's greatest albums – and maybe the first record we'd point to for anyone interested in her music! The set's an incredible blend of vocals, acoustic guitar, and these lightly gentle arrangements – all at this new level of expression that still recognizes Joyce's bossa roots, but really moves beyond with all the sophistication of MPB in the 70s! The sound of the whole thing is wonderful – completely transcendent and mesmerizing right from the start – and Joyce penned most of the tunes and handled the arrangements – with help from Gilson Peranzzetta on a few tracks. Titles include the classic "Feminina", plus "Essa Mulher", "Coracao De Crianca", "Aldeia De Ogum", "Compor", and "Misterios". Next is Agua E Luz – an amazing mix of jazzy vocals, sparkling production, and beautiful light guitar – the younger Joyce at her best – in a wonderfully uncluttered style that makes the record a treasure all the way through! Joyce sings and plays acoustic guitar – and gets these lightly jazzy backings that often feature a bit of electricity, but never too much to dampen the acoustic heart of the record – that great sense of personality that's always made Joyce unlike any other Brazilian artist we can think of – even though so many others have tried to copy her style over the years! Joyce did all the arrangements herself, Sivuca guests on one track – and titles include "Muito Prazer", "Samba De Gago", "Agua E Luz", "Mais Uma Vez, Mais Uma Voiz", "Banho Maria", and "Meio A Meio". Tardes Cariocas is a set recorded during the same key stretch as her early 80s albums for EMI – yet much more obscure! The album's got the same brilliant blend of jazz and bossa phrasing as her classics Agua E Luz and Feminina – and really brings Joyce's beautiful vocals to the forefront, with a strong focus on that fluid, jazzy style we totally love! Acoustic guitar is key to the instrumentation, yet there's also a few electric touches on keyboards – yet used quite softly, so that the presence of Joyce really dominates the record – but with a power that's greater than some of her more solo sets. Wonderful throughout –a nd with cuts that include "Nacional Kid", "Curioso", "Baracumbarra", "Tardes Cariocas", "Luz Do Chao", and "Ela". Saudade Do Futuro is a totally hard to find Joyce album from the mid 80's. Recorded for the obscure Pointer label in Brazil, this set has more of a modern fusion feel than some of her classic recordings that we stock, but Joyce's voice is still sweet and lovely, and her songwriting's as strong as always. The set includes her classic cut "Fa Da Bahia", plus other nice tracks like "Peixe Estrela", "Sonora Garoa", "Quadrantes", "Minha Gata Rita Lee", "Stone Washed, and "Tema Para Jobim", which has a guest performance by Milton Nascimento! Set features 7 bonus tracks – recordings done with Viva Voz, Antonio Adolfo, Mario Adnet, and others – with titles that include "Acalanto", "Terra", "Pega Leve", "Canconeta", "Revendo Amigos", "Diga Ai Companheiro", and "Planeta Azul". ✨✧ Herbie MannHerbie Mann Live At Newport ... LP
Atlantic, 1963. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest 60s live albums from Herbie Mann – done in a style that's a bit different from the rest! Herbie cut many successful live albums for Atlantic, most of them with a hard wailing soul jazz groove – but this one's a nice batch of mellower bossa tunes, played at the Newport festival in Herbie's early love affair with the music, by a group that includes Dave Pike on vibes and Atilla Zoller on guitar. All tracks are long, and the groove is much more open-handed than on Herbie's studio bossa albums. Titles include "Garota De Ipanema", "Desafinado", "Samba De Orfeu", and the more soul jazz oriented tune "Don't You Know", written by bassist Ben Tucker. LP, Vinyl record album
