✨✧ Erroll GarnerErroll Garner's Cocktail Time (10 inch LP) ... LP
Dial, Late 40s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hardly a session of cocktail music – as the album represents Erroll Garner's excellent sessions for Dial, served up here in a beautiful 10" package! The Garner style here is similar to other sets of his from the time – but seems to be particularly well recorded, with a sense of tone that's equally balanced by Garner's amazing sense of rhythm. Members of the trio include Red Callender on bass and Harold West on drums – and titles include "Sloe Gin Fizz", "Trio", "Play Piano Play", and "Blues Garni". LP, Vinyl record album

A well-titled record, given that the set features a mixture of grooving numbers with a trio, and some of the spare, open tracks that would really make Erroll Garner's fame – including an early version of "Misty"! CD

✨✧ Erroll GarnerUp In Erroll's Room ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really groovy 60s album from pianist Erroll Garner – one that mixes his already-great style on the keys with some larger backings from the great Don Sebesky! The approach is wonderful, and seems to give Garner even more punch than usual – and he's working with an excellent core combo that features Ike Isaacs on bass, Jimmie Smith on drums, and Jose Mangual on congas. The large group aren't on all the tracks, but that's fine with us – because Isaacs' bass and Mangual's congas are tremendous, and really fill in lots of space between Erroll's never-ending flurry of notes on the piano! Titles include "True Blues", "Up In Errol's Room", "Groovin High", "Girl From Ipanema", "Watermelon Man", and "The Coffee Song". CD

✨✧ Erroll GarnerCampus Concert ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An unusual 60s album that tries to link piano legend Erroll Garner to the crowds on the college campuses of the time – but with a vibe that's very different than most of the modern jazz sets that were usually issued in a similar format! This set was recorded mostly at Purdue University, and has Garner playing in a mode that's completely classic, and completely on fire – romping through tunes with this amazing deftness, alongside help from bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin. As with most Garner albums of this time, the pianist could almost be solo – as Erroll's strength and vitality on the keys is amazing – and the piano sound really seems to lead the bass and drums – not the other way around. Titles include "Mambo Erroll", "Stardust", "These Foolish Things", "My Funny Valentine", "La Petite Mambo", and "In The Still Of The Night". CD

✨✧ Erroll GarnerFeeling Is Believing ... CD
Mercury/Mack Avenue, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Erroll Garner's first album of the 70s – and a set that's a perfect demonstration of that way he could always groove, but with an edge! The first 30 seconds of the album have this sense of bold freedom that might make you think you've accidentally put on a record by Cecil Taylor – that way of stomping across the keys that Garner could do at his maddest moments, then find a way to make the whole thing groove – which he does often on the set, thanks to help from a variety of bassists and drummers, plus some killer congas from the mighty Jose Mangual – a touch that always seems to bring out the best in Erroll. Titles include "Mood Island", "For Once In My Life", "Paisley Eyes", "Not So Fast", "The Loving Touch", and "You Turned Me Around". CD

Cortez GreerCortez Greer Live At Scarlet O'Hara's ... LP
Garner, Early 70s. Very Good ... $29.99
Cortez was a singer who entertained at the Scarlet O'Hara night club in Atlanta during the early 70s – and although he's not the greatest voice you'll ever hear, he's got a nice little backing band called Group Therapy! Group Therapy back up Cortez on this one and only live set, recorded in his home turf – and before Cortez hits the album on vocals, they jam hard on a great rendition of "Kool & The Gang", one that begins with lots of flanged out wah-wah guitar, and some very heavy horns! The drummer in the group's got a nice heavy touch, and he kicks it hard on a vocal cover of "Hard To Handle", and covers of "Proud Mary" and "Natural Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has water staining and peeling on the top and bottom seams. Vinyl is nice and clean overall.)

Chico HamiltonMaster (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Enterprise/Culture Factory (France), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
A totally excellent bit of funk from Chico Hamilton – working with a great group that more than helps their leader live up to the album's title! The record's a real lost gem – and it's got Chico working in much funkier territory than before, grooving with complicated rhythms, and a heavy sound that features lots of work on organ and guitar. Lowell George (of Little Feat fame) is playing slide guitar in the group, giving the sound a great, muddy propellant – which only gets stronger with the help of Simon Nava and Sam Clayton on congas, plus heavy organ and piano by Stu Garner, Jerry Aiello and Bill Payne. Includes the killer Latin groover "Conquistadores 74", plus "Stu", "Feels Good", "Fancy", "Stacy", Gengis" and "I Can Hear The Grass Grow". CD

Mourning A BLKstarCycle ... CD
Don Giovanni, 2020. New Copy ... $7.99 13.99
A fantastic album from Mourning A BLKstar – even more powerful than their set dedicated to Eric Garner, and a batch of material that really gets at the righteous energy of this Cleveland combo! The group see themselves as part of the James Baldwin tradition of the artist bearing witness – and their genre-bending, gender non-confirming style really pushes forward the energy of underground soul music – as they worked together in an empty storefront in Cleveland to craft this beautiful cycle of songs initial sketches they all fleshed out together – in a mix of shifting vocal leads, heavy drums, dark guitar lines, and proud horn parts. Titles include "Sense Of An Ending", "Something JD Said", "Been Around", "Devil Get Behind Me", "Whom The Bell Tolls", "The Wants", "Deluze (Solange say rmx)", "So Young So", "The Box", and "4 Days". Adrian YoungeAmerican Negro ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The most political album we've ever heard from Adrian Younge – a set that stands as a much stronger, much more individual message than anything he's ever given us before! All Adrian's previous instrumental elements are in the mix – heavy funk, with a special soundtrack sort of twist – but the music is set to much more righteous, powerful lyrics that are sung by Loren Oden, Chester Gregory, and Sam Harmonix – spelling out political themes and cultural concerns that are extremely resonant with the contemporary listener, and which have a lot more force than some of Adrian's more old school-styled projects. Titles include "The Black Broadcast", "Revolutionize", "Double Consciousness", "Revisionist History", "James Mincey Jr", "Margaret Garner", "Race Is A Fallacy", and "The March On America". CD

Virgin (UK), 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mighty roots harmony session! The Abyssinians were one of the first groups at the forefront of reggae to move away from the influence of the American soul scene and forge their own style. This album from the late 70s, a period when a lot of attention was being focused on the island from foreign musical markets, especially British labels like Virgin, is one of their finest efforts, a solid piece of laid back roots vibes, with an insistent, conscious message, and crisp, rolling grooves courtesy Boris Garner, Sly & Robbie, Fully Fullwood, Tommy McCook and many other greats. Includes "This Land Is For Everyone", "Meditation", "Wicked Men", "Dem A Come" and "Let My Days Be Long". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Byard LancasterIt's Not Up To Us ... LP
Vortex, 1968. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first albums ever recorded by soulful avant legend Byard Lancaster! Lancaster hailed from Philadelphia, and played flute and alto in a style that was clearly informed by the freer spiritual players that dominated one branch of the avant garde tree at the time, like 'Trane and Pharoah. He's joined here by a young Sonny Sharrock, whose "John's Children" they do a wonderful reading of, plus Eric Gravatt, Keno Speller and Jerome Hunter. The tunes are all still tied to a primarily swing based concept of time, and the solos never reach too far, on this side that nods towards the new thing without diving in too deeply. Includes the title track, "Last Summer", Garner's "Misty", "Mr AA", "Dogtown", the standard "Over The Rainbow" and "Satan". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing. Cover has a water stain in one top corner – worse on back than front – and some other light wear.)

✨✧ VariousComplete Dial Records Modern Jazz Sessions (9CD set) ... CD
Dial/Mosaic, Late 40s. Used 9CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from one of the most important labels of the early bebop years – a tiny imprint based in LA, but one that played a big role on the New York scene as well! Dial Records is often best-remembered for documenting some key early material by Charlie Parker – but as you'll see in this set, the company had a wonderful ear for other artists too – and managed to record some incredible work during a relatively short span of time! The tracks here were all done in a span of less than four years – from mid 1945 through late 1948 – yet together, they represent a blueprint of bop that would last for years to come – material that has often come out in varied formats over the years, and finally gets its full, proper presentation here – in an overstuffed box that's in the best Mosaic Records tradition! The collection features individual sessions, laid out in chronological order – with full notes on each, and a presentation that tracks down obscure tracks from varied releases, then brings them together to represent the full creative output at each moment. The 9CD package features 185 tracks in all – on sessions led by Red Norvo, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Howard McGhee, Sonny Berman & Bill Harris, Dexter Gordon, Erroll Garner, Earl Coleman and Fats Navarro, Dodo Marmarosa, and the team of Wardell Grey and Dexter Gordon. BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky soul from Detroit – the second foray into the uber-rare and unreleased funk treasures recorded at Dave Hamilton's Motor City studio – and an even deeper look at what's turning out to be one of the greatest long-buried funk catalogs to come to light in recent years! The collection includes some singles released on Hamilton's own TCB and other imprints, some that were licensed to other labels, plus a wealth of unreleased material. There's straight ahead funk vocals and instrumentals, and numbers that have more of a freewheeling, adventurous vibe – albeit with a raw funk backdrop! Includes numbers by The Deacons, Prophet & His Disciples, Chico & Buddy, Billy Garner, OC Tolbert, Little Ann, Dave Hamilton himself, The Webb People, The Pepper and more. 22 tracks in all: "A Drop In The Bucket" by The Deacons, "You Fool, You Fool Pt 1" by Prophet & His Disciples, "A Thing Called The Jones" by Chico & Buddy, "The Bad Things (You Said To Me)" by The Barrino Brothers, "Ghetto Stride" by Dave Hamilton, "Who" by Jackie Dee, "Love Bandit" by OC Tolbert, "Simon Says' by The Future Kind, "Clap Your Hands" by The Tokays, "I'm Sending Vibrations" by The Webb People and more. ✨✧ Jaki ByardHere's Jaki ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1961. Used ... $8.99
Important early work from Jaki Byard – one of his first records as a leader, and a wonderful set of quirky piano trio tunes! Jaki's working here with Ron Carter on bass and Roy Haynes on drums – in a format that's similar to other trio records of the time, but which is really pushed to the limit by Byard's unique conception of the keys, and his unabashed ability to play well and whimsical at the same time! And by "whimsical", we're not saying "goofy", or "silly" – but really just are referring to Jaki's clearly unabashed love of all things musical – a joyous celebration of many strands of jazz, all coming together in a sound that's all his own!
