✨✧ Gap BandEarly In The Morning (long, short) ... 12-inch
Total Experience, 1982. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great bass-heavy groover from The Gap Band – pulled off one of their best albums ever, Gap Band IV! The cut's got some really great funky bits on the bottom – acoustic piano wrapped around some more electric rhythms, in a blend that keeps the track as soulful as it is catchy! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polygram sleeve, still in the shrink with hype sticker.)

Gap BandGap Band (1979) ... CD
Mercury/Universal (UK), 1979. Used ... $9.99
The start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. There's also a few mellower cuts too – which really sound great, and give the record the same sort of balance you might hear on work by Heaven & Earth at the time. War's Lonnie Simmons produced – and held the cash bag all the way to the bank! Titles include "I'm In Love", "Got To Get Away", "Messin With My Mind", "Shake", "Baby Baba Boogie", "Open Your Mind Wide", and "I Can Sing". CD
(Out of print, digipack case has some light edgewear.)

A great one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! Tunes like "Burn Rubber On Me (When You Want To Hurt Me)" and "Humpin" packed 80s dance floors for good reason, and put the band in steady rotation, while numbers like "Yearning For Your Love" showed the band could drop the tempo, stretch out a bit, and deliver the mighty mellow. This one's certainly at the top of the heap of 80s groovers, as far as we're concerned – a record that really took the Gap Band over the top! Other tracks include "Nothin' Comes To The Sleepers", "Are You Living", "The Way", "Gash Gash Gash" and more. CD

Total Experience, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Perhaps the ultimate album for The Gap Band – and sure, it was a hit, but the record still sounds great today, and the constant sampling of some of the record has kept it fresh in the crates for years and years. The band have lost the heavier funk sound of earlier years, and working in a slick 80s groove mode that they both helped to define and put on the charts with the tracks "Outstanding" and "Early In The Morning", both two killer grooves with a complicated instrumental feel, and some wicked harmony vocals over the top. Lonnie Simmons is still producing the band – and other tracks include "Lonely Like Me", "Stay With Me", "Talkin Back", and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gap BandGap Band VI/Gap Band VII (with bonus tracks) ... CD
BGO (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Electro-steeped funky soul from The Gap Band – a pair of mid 80s classic LPs in a 2CD set with bonus tracks! They're already past the "V" in their classic run of 80s albums at this point, and still very much at the top of their game. The core trio work with sweet production from Lonnie Simmons on VI – a pairing that continues to set the group up above most of their competition, and give them a groove that goes way past the obvious. Mellow cuts stand out as strongly as upbeat ones – and if anything, the mellow groovers are the best! Titles include "The Sun Don't Shine Everyday", "Weak Spot", "Video Junkie", "Beep A Freak", "Don't You Leave Me", "Disrespect", "I Believe", and "I Found My Baby". VII is an equally great gem – augmented by some more electro touches that definitely keep things fresh – and we mean that in the best mid-80s use of the word! A bit of an old school influence comes into the vocals at points – showing their strength with the kind of catchy chorus that works great with a bassy groove. Titles include a great ballad reworking of "Going In Circles" – plus the groovers "Lil Red Funkin Hood", "Automatic Brain", "Desire", "Bumpin Gum People", and "I Know We'll Make It". The 2CDs include 11 bonus tracks too – heavy on 12" club mixes and remixes! CD

✨✧ Gap BandGap Band (1979)/Gap Band II/Gap Band III ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Massive music in a wonderful package – three funky classics from The Gap Band! First up is the group's self-titled album from 1979 – the start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. Titles include "I'm In Love", "Got To Get Away", "Messin With My Mind", "Shake", "Baby Baba Boogie", "Open Your Mind Wide", and "I Can Sing". Gap Band II features mean, lean grooves from The Gap Band – a legendary batch of mainstream funk from the end of the 70s – and a record that really has the trio working at the top of their game! There's a wonderful balance here between funky numbers and mellow ones – the latter of which really help pace the record nicely, giving it a depth that takes the group way beyond the cliches of some of their contemporaries, and firmly establishing the Gap Band as one to watch for the 80s! Titles include the massive "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up & Dance" – with its classic "Oops Upside Your Head" refrain – plus "Who Do You Call", "No Hiding Place", "Steppin Out", "You Are My High", and "Party Lights". Gap Band III is sagreat one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! ✨✧ Gap BandGap Band V – Jammin' ... LP
Mercury, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Gap Band are definitely Jammin on this sweet little set from the early 80s – hitting that fierce funk mode they do so well, with lots of snapping lines at the bottom of the rhythms! The style is trademark Gap all the way through – a percolated approach to funk that's tight, but never too slick – in a groove that's different than some of their other mainstream counterparts at the time – hard to describe accurately, but almost with a touch of jazz in the mix! Charlie Wilson handles most of the lead vocals, with support from brothers Robert and Ronnie – and Ronnie produced most of the set. Titles include "Where Are We Going", "Shake A Leg", "Jam The Motha", "Someday", "You're Something Special", "I'm Ready", "You're My Everything", "Smile", and "Jammin In America". CD also features the bonus track "Party Train (special dance mix)". LP, Vinyl record album

While we think the low rider cover images on these compilations are pretty dumb and sort of inappropriate, the selection of tracks is better than decent, in a mainstream 80s sort of way: EWF "Let's Groove", Evelyn Champagne King "I'm In Love", Young & Company "I Like What You're Doing To Me", Carl Carlton "She's A Bad Mama Jama", Parliament "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", Barkays "Do It", Cameo "Shake Your Pants", Brick "Dusic", Gap Band "Early In The Morning" and "Humpin", Herbie Hancock 'Rock It", Ohio Players "Fire", Rick James 'Super Freak" and Kool & the Gang "Hollywood Swinging". ✨✧ VariousKrush Groove ... LP
Warner, 1985. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Not quite the Wild Style soundtrack, but still an early hip hop cinema classic – thanks to work from some of the bigger acts of the time! The movie's from a second generation of rap filmmaking – more narrative, less documentary – but over the course of years, the whole thing's come to stand as a great document of this moment in music – and in super-fresh style as well! Hip Hop tracks include "She's On It" by Beastie Boys, "I Can't Live Without My Radio" by LL Cool J, "If I Ruled The World" by Kurtis Blow, "All You Can Eat" by Fat Boys, and "Krush Groovin" by the Krush Groove All-Stars – which features Run-DMC, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, and Sheila E! ✨✧ VariousStrange Breaks & Mr Thing 2 – More Rock, Funk, Soul, Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic funky follow-up to the first Mr Thing compilation from BBE – and a set that's equally filled with rare and soulful grooves! If we didn't know better, we'd swear he went into our crates and pilfered our own record collections – because the package contains plenty of overlooked cuts that we've loved for years, but which have never gotten their due – and not even all of them are from totally obscure pressings or small indie labels – just the kind of records that people pass over sometimes, because they don't know how great they sound! There's lots and lots and lots of deeply funky numbers on the collection – and the package really takes us back to the glory days when BBE compilations were always turning us onto something new – especially during the Keb Darge glory days. Titles include "Back Ground Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Searching For Soul" by Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers, "ABC" by Hot Butter & Soul, "Spooky Do" by Dick Walter, "The Horse" by Val Merral's Orchestra, "It's Just Begun" by Hot City Bump Band, "Sally" by Frank Pleyer Big Band, "Love Is Just A Word" by Johnny Griffith Inc, "Can't Stop Talkin" by Art & Ron, "Family Affair" by The Generation Gap, "Gacek" by Jerzy Milian, "Rockin Chair" by John L Watson with White Mouse, "Pink Panther" by Alan Tew, "Twinkle Stars Boo Galoo (live)" by Oscar Harris & The Twinkle Stars, "The Message" by Tinga Stewart, and "Pru Urebu" by The Rias Orchestra. VariousLosing Touch With My Mind – Psychedelia In Britain 1986 to 1990 (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Psychedelia first boomed big on the American scene of the late 60s – but the music had a huge second life on the UK scene in the second half of the 80s – where it took many different forms, all of which are contained in this heavy-duty set! The work here isn't slavishly tied to the fuzzy guitars and trippy elements of the first generation – although there's plenty of that at play, too – as the groups here come from different modes and smaller scenes – so that elements of mod, post-punk, club, and even early house music styles come into play from time to time – making for a hugely diverse array of sounds. The backstory might be that after years of clean teen living, there was a strong return of controlled substances in music making – but equally important here is a rediscovery of the best elements of echo, fuzz, and other spacey production elements! The set's a great exploration into this scene – done at the same level as the other great 3CD sets from Cherry Red, right down to a full booklet with lots of notes on the music. 60 tracks in all – with music by The Sneetches, Ultra Vivid Scene, The Seers, Telescopes, Stone Roses, Sun Dial, Robyn Hitchcock, Glass Keys, Legendary Pink Dots, Wolfhounds, Revolving Paint Dream, The Stairs, 14 Iced Bears, Red Chair Fadeaway, Biff Bang Pow, Paul Roland, Gol Gappas, The Sugar Battle, Magic Mushroom Band, Prime Movers, Mood Six, The Times, Dentists, and many more!
