✨✧ Tom BrowneBrother Brother – The GRP/Arista Collection ... CD
GRP/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soaring sounds from trumpeter Tom Browne – a younger player who really took the torch, and opened up a new path forward from early 70s electric funk experiments by artists like Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard! With work on this set, Browne is clearly the heir apparent to the CTI sound of Hubbard, or the Larry Mizell work at Blue Note by Byrd – and finds a perfect space between jazz and soul throughout – using his horn on grooves that start out in familiar jazz funk and fusion modes, then move into some great 80s groove and old school styles too. 2CD set features 29 tracks in all – including a few mixes from singles – and titles include "Magic (12" mix)", "Throw Down", "Funkin For Jamaica", "I Never Was A Cowboy", "Brother Brother", "Her Silent Smile", "Cruisin", "Rockin Radio", "Mr Business", "Brighter Tomorrow", "Charisma", "Bye Gones (ext rmx)", "Can't Give It Away", "My Latin Sky", "A Message", "Hit Man", "Secret Fantasy (ext)", "Fungi Mama/Bebopafunkadiscolypso", "Midnight Interlude", "Angeline", and "Tighs High". George BensonThat's Right ... CD
GRP, 1996. Used ... $2.99
Recent work from George Benson – smoother than his classic 60s work, but with a nice soulful groove that's a lean extension of his work in the 70s. And sure, it's a bit smooth jazz – but don't forget that George virtually invented the genre, and hearing his guitar work on the set, it's clear that he's still head and shoulders above most of the folks he inspired. Titles include "True Blue", "Marvin Said", "That's Right", "The Thinker", "Holdin On", "Song For My Brother", and "Footprints In The Sand", produced by Bluey of Incognito! CD

Brecker BrothersReturn Of The Brecker Brothers ... CD
GRP/Verve, 1992. Used ... $4.99
The Brecker Brothers return – and update their jazz funk groove for the 90s! The sound here is a bit more contemporary than the duo's classics of the 70s – more programmed beats and heavy keyboards – but there's still plenty of warmer jazz elements too, not just in the tenor from Michael and trumpet from Randy, but also in the guitar lines of Mike Stern and percussion fills of Don Alias! The groove's almost an updated take on the 70s Kudu style, or some of the early 80s fusion on Elektra Records – and although one track has vocals from Randy, most of the record is instrumental. Titles include "On The Backside", "Spherical", "Good Gracious", "Roppongi", "Song For Barry", and "King Of The Lobby". CD

GRP/Arista, 1980. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Smooth trumpety funk from the great Tom Browne! "Funkin For Jamaica" is a great one – very much in a Donald Byrd mode, but with a slightly smoother finish over the top! "Dreams Of Lovin You" is mellower, but still nice. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Art FarmerOut Of The Past ... CD
GRP/Argo, 1960/1961. Used ... $6.99
A great CD that combines most of the material on Art's two albums for Argo – Art (1960) and Perception (1961). Art is a beautiful album of understated brilliance – one of Farmer's early shifts into the sublime, an easily blown batch of trumpet tracks played with trio backing by Tommy Flanagan, Tommy Williams, and Albert Heath. The tracks are all in the four to five minute range, with Art crafting lyrically soulful lines over the top. Titles include "Who Cares", "Out Of The Past", "Younger Than Springtime", "That Ole Devil Called Love", and "Goodbye Old Girl". Perception is similar, an amazingly beautiful set of tracks from Art – playing with superb accompaniment from a young Harold Mabern, in a laidback quartet format that really lets Art open up! Art's playing is fresh and creative throughout – never over the top, with that subtle genius that he was bringing to his work in the 60s – and the choice of material includes Tom McIntosh's great composition "The Day After", plus Art's "Punsu" and "Kayin". One track from each album has been omitted to fit the material on one CD (which is BS, by the way, as the CD is only 64 minutes long!) – but if you can stand having the incomplete versions of the albums, this is a great deal for some rare material! ✨✧ Don BlackmanDon Blackman ... LP
GRP, 1981. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Titles include "You Ain't Hip", "Yabba Dabba Do", "Heart's Desire", "Deaf Hook Up Connection", "Never Miss A Thing", and "Holding You Loving You", and "Since You Been Away So Long". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 90s Scorpio reissue with DCharles etch. NOTE – bottom half of cover has staining, waviness, & flaking due to moisture.)

✨✧ Tom BrowneLove Approach ... LP
GRP/Arista, 1980. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early gem from trumpeter Tom Browne – a set that not only firmly established Browne as one of the best young players of his generation, but which also paved the way for a whole new direction for jazz funk in the 80s! The record is a perfect example of how great the mix of R&B rhythms and jazz fusion instrumentation could be – groovy enough to capture a whole new audience from the soul market, but still more than respectful of the solo talents of the leader – but all without any attempt at smooth jazz commercialism at all! There's some great hard funk moments on the set – and Browne approaches the music in a way that's nicely different than Donald Byrd or Freddie Hubbard, two older players who first helped forge this sound in the 70s – and whose path Tom's clearly taking, but with new directions of his own. There's almost more of a street-worthy vibe to the set – quite a surprise if you only know later records on the GRP label – and the arrangements are by Tom, Weldon Irvine, Lesette Wilson, and Dave Grusin. Titles include the funky classic "Funkin' For Jamaica", plus "Her Silent Smile", "Moon Rise", "Nocturne", "Forever More", and "Weak In The Knees". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ColtraneLove Supreme ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD

✨✧ Roy Haynes QuartetOut Of The Afternoon ... CD
Impulse/GRP (France), 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Roy Haynes always brings something great to the table for any album he does as a leader – and this record is no exception! Here, the "added something" is the presence of Roland Kirk on reeds – offered a key early chance to express his most modern ideas in the freedom of Haynes' group – working alongside Tommy Flanagan on piano and Henry Grimes on bass, in what was easily one of the hippest groups to record for Impulse in the early 60s! The record's filled with wonderful material – and a mix of originals and standards done with a very twisted edge – all with great interplay between Kirk's quirky sax work and Roy Haynes' amazing drumming – often changing up timings and rhythms with ease, and really matching Kirk's quirky energy for the set. Titles include "Moon Ray", "Raoul", "Snap Crackle", and "Long Wharf". CD

GRP, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A record that has Dave Grusin elevating a bit more into the jazz/soul mainstream – as the set has the keyboardist working with a few more crossover modes than before, but all in a way that seems to demonstrate his many years in various kinds of music! The album was a key entry in the new sound of fusion during the mid 80s – maybe a bit sharper than later smooth jazz, but with efforts from some leading lights of that generation to come – including David Sanborn and Marcus Miller. Phoebe Snow sings a bit on the record – which might provide her with one of her more exciting settings in years – and titles include "Power Wave", "Thankful N Thoughtful", "Night Lines", "Tick Tock", "Bossa Baroque", and "Secret Place". ✨✧ Milt JacksonStatements ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1961/1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great statement from vibist Milt Jackson – one of his key solo sessions in a great 60s run of recordings away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! Like the classics that followed this one, the vibe is much more soulful than any of Milt's records with the MJQ – kind of an extension of the groove he hit on 50s dates for Savoy and Prestige, swung with an even tighter feel here in the Impulse Records setting! The backing's from a trio that includes Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and the tracks are short, but have some nice haunting themes that work well with the sensitive vibes of Jackson and piano of Jones. Titles include "Put Off", "Statement", "Slowly", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "Thrill From The Blues". CD

✨✧ VariousNu Leaf ... LP
Numero, Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual idea for a compilation – but the sort that we've really come to appreciate from the folks at Numero Group! The package traces a shift in American independent jazz during the 80s – following the sorts of players who might have played spiritual jazz or rock-oriented fusion in the 70s, as they pick up new instruments, try out new studio techniques, and work in other modes that are surprisingly soulful overall! You might think of the set as the bridge between 70s jazz and smooth jazz – and there's a a few players here you'll recognize from the previous decade – yet the songs are nearly as slick or commercial as mainstream smooth jazz, and maybe stand as a nice indie antidote to the sounds coming from the GRP label during the decade. Titles include "Tropical Chill" by Plunky, "Maria's First" by Calvin Keys, "Waiting For You" by Frank Potenza, "Born With A Desire" by Tony Palkovic, "Sidetrack" by James Dallas, "6295 SW Fisher" by George Shaw, "Sunbeam" by Larry Bright, and "Orphans" by Michael Hayes.
