Louis ArmstrongWhat A Wonderful World ... CD
Decca/GRP, 1968. Used ... $1.99
A surprising gem from Louis' later years – most famous for the title hit, but a great album all the way through! Louis is more of a singer than a musician on the set – and he's working with arrangements steeped in warmth and nostalgia – going for an instantly-ancient sound that brings out the best in Armstrong's sentimental tone. Next to the album's wonderful title track "What A Wonderful World", there's also lots of great obscure material – including "The Home Fire", "Hello Brother", "There Must Be A Way", "Fantastic That's You", and "The Sunshine Of Love". Albert AylerLove Cry ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1968. Used ... $5.99 7.99
Brilliant late work from spiritual saxophone genius Albert Ayler – one of his last truly great albums! The session has none of the jazz-meets-other music feel of some of the other Impulse albums – and is more in the straight expressive style of the ESP recordings. Tracks are more reined in here – with some short themes that are almost a distillation of the freedom Ayler had been expressing for a few years, summed up beautifully in tunes that have a plaintive cry, filled with as much soul and love as Ayler could muster into his horn! Players include Donald Ayler on trumpet, Cal Cobbs on harpsichord, Alan Silva on bass, and Milford Graves on drums – and titles include "Zion Hill", "Love Flower", "Love Cry", "Ghosts", "Omega", and "Dancing Flowers". CD also includes some extra bonus material! CD

John ColtraneLove Supreme ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD

✨✧ Dave GrusinOut Of The Shadows ... LP
GRP, 1982. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Dave Grusin's definitely out of the shadows here – after years of session work, soundtrack music, and other arrangements – finally beginning to shine in the limelight as a jazz musician on his own! The set's got a nice sort of vibe – not the too-smooth later sound of the GRP label, and instead this nice balance of electric keyboards and acoustic piano – delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Lee Ritenour on guitar and Steve Gadd on drums! Production is nicely understated – and titles include the mellow stepper "Serengeti Walk", plus "Last Train To Paradiso", "She Could Be Mine", "Crystal Morning", "Hokkaido", and "Sweetwater Nights". Milt JacksonStatements ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1961/1964. Used ... $5.99
A great statement from vibist Milt Jackson – one of his key solo sessions in a great 60s run of recordings away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! Like the classics that followed this one, the vibe is much more soulful than any of Milt's records with the MJQ – kind of an extension of the groove he hit on 50s dates for Savoy and Prestige, swung with an even tighter feel here in the Impulse Records setting! The backing's from a trio that includes Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and the tracks are short, but have some nice haunting themes that work well with the sensitive vibes of Jackson and piano of Jones. Titles include "Put Off", "Statement", "Slowly", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "Thrill From The Blues". CD

✨✧ Joe Sample & Lalah HathawaySong Lives On ... CD
GRP, 1999. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful collaboration between vocalist Lalah Hathaway and keyboardist Joe Sample – one of Lalah's few sessions from this under-recorded point in her career – and a set that's quit different than the straighter soul of her earlier music! Sample's warm tones really bring out a lot in Hathaway's vocals – a jazzy color that deepens the record a lot more than you'd expect from Lalah, and which at times almost takes us back to territory of her famous father Donny! Joe plays both acoustic and electric keys on the record, and other players include Kirk Whalum on saxes and Lenny Castro on percussion. Lalah doesn't sing on every track, but with a lineup like that we're also happy to dig the instrumentals – and titles include "One Day I'll Fly Away", "Living In Blue", "Bitter Sweet", "For All We Know", "A Long Way From Home", "Street Life", "Fever", and "The Song Lives On". ✨✧ Billy CobhamPicture This ... CD
GRP, 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tight 80s set from drummer Billy Cobham – a record that really shows the soulful focus he was bringing to his music at the time! There's definitely a GRP vibe to the set – but given the boundless energy that Cobham brings to his work on drums, the overall sound packs plenty of punch – much more so than some of Billy's contemporaries on the label. Cobham plays mostly acoustic drums, but uses a few rhythm patterns too – and most of the tracks feature small groupings of players – including Randy Brecker on flugelhorn, Tom Scott on lyricon, Grover Washington Jr on tenor, and George Duke on keyboards. Titles include "Two For Juan", "Same Ole Love", "Coming Attractions","The Juggler", "Sign O The Times", and "You Within Me Within You". CD

GRP, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An 80s fusion smoker from Billy Cobham – a set that's a lot more soulful and subtle than you might guess from the title, or from Billy's image on the cover – filled with warm keyboards, and nice little groove overall! The album's supposedly dedicated to Nelson Mandela – but while the songs have some slight African roots and titles, the overall feel is more in a soaring fusion mode – nicely restrained from Cobham's jamming 70s years, and with some nice little hooks that really send the tunes home. Billy plays both acoustic drums and some drum programs – and titles include "A Light Shines In Your Eyes", "Zanzibar Breeze", "Desiccated Coconuts", "Summit Afrique", "Tinseltown", "Schmagofatz", and "Times Of My Life". In the electric universe of the GRP label, Chick Corea makes a bold move with his Akoustic Band here – even if the overall conception of the cover and the group's fashions have kind of an "electric" 80s look to it! The group here is a trio – with John Patitucci on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and Corea's flowing piano lines are at the forefront of the group's work, initiating the tunes with a surprisingly heartfelt feel, and showing some of the sense of space and sound he developed on his electric recordings. A record that's got a slightly goofy cover, but a sound that's much richer than you might expect – thanks in part to great work on the album from percussionist Manolo Badrena! Some of the music here echoes the earlier fusion of guitarist Steve Khan – but other tunes bring in some warmer, Brazilian-y elements – including a bit of vocalization from Badrena, with occasional chorus work from Lani Groves and Vivian Cherry. The rest of the group features frequent partner Anthony Jackson on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and titles include "Sise", "Silent Screen", "Mambosa", "Butane Elvin", "Botero People, and "Kamarica". ✨✧ John KlemmerJohn Klemmer – Priceless Jazz ... CD
GRP/Universal, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work from a crucially overlooked artist! John certainly cut some schmaltzy tunes in his days, but all the work on this set is amazing – and is pulled from his massive late 60s years at Cadet, and his early 70s work for Impulse. Klemmer's tone is amazing – crystal-perfect right out of the box, and able to work perfectly in both tight soul jazz settings, or freer post-Coltrane rundowns. Much of Klemmer's best work has never been reissued, and until that happens, the 10 tracks on here will give you a great taste of his genius. Titles include "Look To The Sky", "Constant Throb (part 1)", "Tone Row Weaver", "There's Some Light Ahead", "Crystaled Tears", "Waterfall II", and "Later With Them Woes". CD

✨✧ Tom BrowneLove Approach ... LP
GRP/Arista, 1980. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An early gem from trumpeter Tom Browne – a set that not only firmly established Browne as one of the best young players of his generation, but which also paved the way for a whole new direction for jazz funk in the 80s! The record is a perfect example of how great the mix of R&B rhythms and jazz fusion instrumentation could be – groovy enough to capture a whole new audience from the soul market, but still more than respectful of the solo talents of the leader – but all without any attempt at smooth jazz commercialism at all! There's some great hard funk moments on the set – and Browne approaches the music in a way that's nicely different than Donald Byrd or Freddie Hubbard, two older players who first helped forge this sound in the 70s – and whose path Tom's clearly taking, but with new directions of his own. There's almost more of a street-worthy vibe to the set – quite a surprise if you only know later records on the GRP label – and the arrangements are by Tom, Weldon Irvine, Lesette Wilson, and Dave Grusin. Titles include the funky classic "Funkin' For Jamaica", plus "Her Silent Smile", "Moon Rise", "Nocturne", "Forever More", and "Weak In The Knees". LP, Vinyl record album

A key bit of jazz funk from trumpeter Tom Browne – still grooving strong here, with a sublime mix of modern soul, funky jazz, and some of the 80s groove touches that showed up on the best GRP titles from the time! The album's got a smooth compressed groove – kind of post-Donald Byrd, with Tom taking solos over the top of most tracks, and occasional vocals , wither from a backing group, or an assortment of different lead singers. Players on the set include Bernard Wright, Dave Grusin, Bobby Broom, and Marcus Miller – and tracks include "I Know", "Midnight Interlude", "Let's Dance", "Night Wind", "Making Plans", "Thighs Hihg", and "Magic". A double-length live set from Chick Corea's Akoustic Band – an ensemble with kind of a silly name, but one that marked a nice return to basics for Chick! The trio features John Patitucci on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and both players have a good sense of feeling to match Corea's expressive work here on the acoustic piano. And although live, there's a sense of intimacy to the record that's very nice – not the "superstar" sort of live record you might expect from Chick, but a nicely subdued session overall. One of the most perfectly-realized early Archie Shepp albums on Impulse Records – a set that brilliantly brings together all the different influences that inspired his sense of creation, but with a lean energy that takes everything far from its roots – and puts the music firmly in the best "new thing" territory of the mid 60s! The players shift around a bit from track to track – that sense of creative combination that really marked this moment in avant jazz expression – and about half the record features Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, in a lineup that also includes Henry Grimes and Barre Phillips on bass, and David Izenzon, Rashied Ali, and Joe Chambers on drums and percussion! Shepp contributed some of his most haunting compositions to the set – including "On This Night", "The Mac Man", and "The Pickaninny" – and the whole thing's amazing enough to make you an Archie Shepp convert for life! ✨✧ Bernard WrightNard ... LP
Arista/GRP, 1981. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A masterpiece of smooth jazzy funk – and super-hip session headed up by the young keyboardist Bernard Wright! Wright's working here with an insider crowd of jazz funk players that includes Bobby Broom, Dave Grusin, Marcus Miller, and Don Blackman, whose funky style is very similar to Wright's. The record sort of picks up the groove where some of the Fantasy Records sessions of the 70s left off – mixing together jazz and soul into a captivating blend that's made even better by Dave Grusin's tight production. And despite what you might think about the crap that Grusin headed up later in the 80s, the early days of the GRP label were amazing years for jazz funk. Includes Don Blackman's sample classic "Haboglabotribin", a nice version of Weldon Irvine's "Music Is The Key", and the cuts"Just Chillin' Out", "Master Rocker", and "Bread Sandwiches". Great all the way through, though – and a record that still delights us year after year! LP, Vinyl record album

Don BlackmanDon Blackman ... CD
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Titles include "You Ain't Hip", "Yabba Dabba Do", "Heart's Desire", "Deaf Hook Up Connection", "Never Miss A Thing", and "Holding You Loving You", and "Since You Been Away So Long". CD

Stanley Clarke & George DukeClarke/Duke Project ... LP
Columbia, 1981. Very Good ... $4.99
A mighty collaboration between Stanley Clarke & George Duke – working here in a pairing that refueled both of their careers for the 80s! In previous years, both Clarke and Duke had a penchant for really stretching out in complex, experimental modes – but here, they're playing in a relatively stripped-down and focused way – hitting some of the more soul-inspired sides of fusion at the time, although still without the slick or commercial feel of the rising GRP generation. Guitars figure heavily on a number of tracks, and vocals do too – sometimes in ways that are slightly too sweet and almost cloying. Tracks include "Wild Dog", "Louie Louie", "Sweet Baby", "I Just Want To Love You", "Winners", "Let's Get Started", and "Touch & Go". LP, Vinyl record album

Saucerman/Nature Sounds, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99
A never-issued set from the great Weldon Irvine – late 70s material made after his classic jazz/funk albums on RCA – and a set that's every bit as great as that material! Irvine works with some of the key musicians who'd make great funky records for the Arista/GRP label – including guitarist Bobby Broom, trumpeter Tom Browne, and keyboardist Don Blackman – the last of whom even sings a bit on the record! There's plenty of moments that resonate strongly with the GRP albums from all three of those jazz funk giants – and if the set had been issued by the label, it would have helped Weldon continue onto greatness well into the 80s. Yet regardless, the long-overdue record is a gem through and through – with titles that include include "Egypt", "Sexy Eyes", "It's Funky", "Blue In Green", "Morning Sunrise", and "The Sisters". Rare work from Weldon Irvine – a selection of tracks recorded as private studio outings, reissued briefly by Luv N Haight in the early 90s, and then only on vinyl! The style here is much more jazz-based than some of Irvine's soul recordings – a mode that's often all instrumental, and which features Weldon playing more acoustic piano than on his 70s fusion classics – but usually mixed in with sweet electric elements, too – which creates this wonderfully righteous balance in the music! The whole thing's very soulful, with plenty of undercurrents of the RCA years – and guest players include Steve Grossman on tenor, Marcus Miller on bass, Tom Browne on trumpet, and Bobby Broom on guitar – the latter 3 of which all worked with Weldon at GRP, making us guess that some of these 80s sides were intended for release on that label. Titles include "Kundabuffer", "Music Is The Key", "Mr PC", "We Can Try Again", and "Blues For Spike". CD

Quincy JonesThis Is How I Feel About Jazz (with bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Impulse, 1956. Used ... $5.99
Fantastic – and an important early album from Quincy Jones! Q's working here in some of his hippest settings of the 50s – scoring longish versions of jazz tunes for groups that include players like Lucky Thompson on tenor, Herbie Mann on flute, Art Farmer on trumpet, Phil Woods and Gene Quill on alto sax, Hank Jones on piano, and even Charles Mingus on bass! As with most Jones albums of the time, Quincy has a way of making a bigger group sound nice and lean – hitting some especially nice edges along with the rhythms, and really showing the way towards a new soulful sound for a bigger band. Titles include a sublime 10 minute version of "Walkin" that kicks off the album with a great soulful groove – plus original tunes "Evening In Paris", "Stockholm Sweetnin", and "Boo's Blues", as well as a version of Cannonball Adderley's "Sermonette". Also includes some great bonus tracks from the Go West album too! CD

✨✧ Ben WebsterSee You At The Fair (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Impulse, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great little album from Ben Webster – perhaps not his most sophisticated, jazz-wise, but done up in a cool cover that has him standing in front of the steel globe at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. The music on the disc has a similar optimistic approach – as Ben solos lightly over rhythms by either Hank Jones or Roger Kellaway on piano (and a bit of harpsichord), plus bass and drums backing by Richard Davis and Osie Johnson. The album's got a great rolling soul jazz number called "See You At The Fair", and a very odd crashing harpsichord number called "Lullaby Of Jazzland" – plus the tunes "Fall Of Love", "While We're Dancing", and "Our Love Is Here To Stay". Luv N' Haight, 1968/1980s/1992. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work from Weldon Irvine – a compilation reissued briefly by Luv N Haight in their earliest days as a label, but hopelessly out of print for too long! The music here is from a variety of sources, some of it private studio sessions, some demos, and a few tracks from Weldon's ridiculously hard to get Strata East album, but the sound is very unified for a collection from different sources, much more jazz-based than some of Irvine's soul recordings – a mode that's often all instrumental, and which features Weldon playing more acoustic piano than on his 70s fusion classics. The style is still nicely soulful, though, and though it's not annotated as such, guest players include Steve Grossman on tenor, Marcus Miller on bass, Tom Browne on trumpet, and Bobby Broom on guitar – the latter 3 of which all worked with Weldon at GRP, making us guess that some of these 80s sides were intended for release on that label. 13 tracks in all, with titles that include "Kundabuffer", "Music Is The Key", "Mr PC", "Blues For Spike", "Fat Mouth", "Turkish Bath", "Gemini Mood", "Pleasure, Pain & Me", "Marjorie Moon", "Cordero" and "Have You Met Miss Jones?". Impulse, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work by Jamal – and one of his first albums to feature electric piano! The mode of the tracks is in that "stretching out" style he was using as the 60s came to a close – a bit inspired by McCoy Tyner, but more an exploration of the lyricism of his earlier work, set to the new freedoms of the jazz record style of the time. The group features Jamal's regulars Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and Ahmad plays both electric and acoustic piano on the album. Tracks include "Dolphin Dance", "Effendi", "Manhattan Reflections", and "Poinciana". CD
