The group here definitely earns the "new direction" in their name – as they work at a level that's quite compelling – kind of their own variant of free jazz, but with a spaciousness that's definitely spiritual – and which also seems to reflect some elements of more traditional Japanese music too! The pianist from Indigo Jam Unit – stepping out on a solo set with a completely different sound! Although IJU always have a tight, bass-heavy approach to funk in their music, always augmented by heavy piano from Yoshichika Tarue – this time around, the pianist is hitting warmer, more gentle modes – solo piano lines recorded with a beautifully echoey, almost watery quality! The sound is a bit hard to peg – the gentle soul of Keith Jarrett's 70s solo work, but with some of the intimate sentimentality of the spare non-guitar Durutti Column piano moments of the early 80s – a reference that's particularly apt, given the way this set was recorded. Indigo Jam Unit have a wicked style that goes way beyond the "jam" in their name – as they're tightly jazzy, but with a very stripped-down quality – one that tends to focus on the funkiest moments in their tunes – even though their music isn't exactly funk! The group's a quartet, led by some monstrous lines on acoustic bass – warm, full, and flowing – set fire further by hard, heavy acoustic piano, plus drums, extra drums, and sometimes percussion – all used in these spare, chunky ways that are totally great! This set brings together some of their best cuts from a variety of albums – and titles include "Descarga", "La Tomatina", "Danza Eterna", "Matador", "Time", "Raindance", "4 Caminos", and "Rush". A very moody performance from Cecil Taylor – one long reading of the piece "Calling It The 8th", originally presented as 2LP set, but finally getting its due here as a single CD that presents the whole thing from start to finish with no interruption! Although as free as some of Taylor's other material from the time, the work also has a sound that's somehow more introspective than some of the others – possibly because of the rumbling bass work of William Parker, which seems to ground the record in an earthy territory that has the players circling back to home after taking freer flights on their solos. The group is a quartet, with Taylor on piano, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Parker on bass, and Rashid Bakr on drums. CD

Bass-heavy grooves from Indigo Jam Unit – easily one of the hardest hitting combos on the Japanese scene in recent years! The tunes here are very heavy on acoustic bass – played in loud, bold lines alongside piano, bass, drums, and added percussion – all recorded with a really full sort of feel, in joyously searching grooves that owe a lot to soul and modal jazz of the 60s and 70s! There's a stripped-down quality to the album that's really appealing – a focus on the core elements and rhythmic moments – making the record a delight for groovehounds, although it's also got a strong jazz component too. That's Jaz with one "z", not two – and the difference here is key, because the music is all soulful house, of the sort we've come to love from Glenn Underground – who works here with Boo Williams to make a set that's one of his greatest to date! Keyboards are the lead instrument over the rhythms – and they often get all these cool moogy, moody lines as they spin things out – sometimes with a solo presence that's a lot deeper than usual for this sort of work – almost recalling that 90s era when overseas house musicians first fell in love with Herbie Hancock! Yet there's also a straighter, more soulful approach going on here – pure Chicago at the core – with cuts that include "Time Of Speed Not Day", "The Flat", "Passing You By", "Heard Syndrome", "The Hour", "Near The End", and "Tempestuous". The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". An important pre-Art Ensemble Of Chicago moment – one that has most of the group coming together in a pair of rare recordings in the home of Lester Bowie – already sounding amazingly creative as a unit! The sound is almost freer than later work by the group – or certainly at the fierceness they hit right at the start of the 70s – and the lineup here includes both Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on a range of reed instruments, Lester Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Malachi Favors on bass – plus strong input from Thurman Barker on drums, and an appearance on one track from Curtis Clark on bass! The sound is wonderfully raw, and surprisingly clear for a home recording – and the power of the music is undeniable. Both tracks – "A To Ericka" and "Quintet" – were previously part of the Art Ensemble box set on Nessa – but that's been out of print for years, and together these compositions work wonderfully as a full album! CD

The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Groundbreaking work from the ever-changing melange of players associated with Chicago underground jazz musician Rob Mazurek. This "Chicago Underground" set features a trio lineup – with Mazurek on cornet, electronics, organ, and vibes; Chad Taylor on percussion and vibes; and Noel Kuppersmith on bass and vibes. Jeff Parker sits in on guitar and organ – and the record's got a free-flowing sound that's really wonderful, and which reminds us a lot of the best modal moments of the 70s, mixed with some of the more rhythmic sounds of the AACM. A well-titled album from Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui – one that's got a warm sense of flow that takes it well past conventional piano trio work! The group here features Fukui on piano, Satoshi Denpo on bass, and Yoshinori Fukui on drums – all working together beautifully as a unit – with a vibe set fire by Ryo's work on the keys, and a sense of imagination that makes even familiar tunes sound completely fresh. The whole thing's in the best Japanese piano tradition of the 70s – that wonderful new territory explored by key pianists like Fukui – with a sound that's open and free, but never avant either. An incredible return to form for Billy Harper – and a landmark album recorded at the end of the 80s, when we'd all but given up on him! The session returns Billy to the majesty of his 70s work – placing him in the setting of long tracks, modal rhythms, and spiritual motivation – the uniquely Harper territory first forged with Lee Morgan and Max Roach, sounding better than ever here, with all the confidence of his youth. The group's a quintet – with Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Francesca Tanksley on piano, Clarence Seay on bass, and Newman Baker on drums – working perfectly as a unit, with a power level that's simply amazing. Harper's the main star, reaching towards the heavens with some incredible solos – but he also clearly knows that he wouldn't be able to do what he does without the great level of support he's getting from the rest of the group. Tracks include "Destiny Is Yours", "If One Could Only See", "Groove From Heaven", "The One That Makes The Rain Stop", and "East West Exodus". LP, Vinyl record album

An open-ended session from reedman Julius Hemphill – a date that has a really improvised feel, and a raw loft jazz quality overall! Hemphill's on flute and tenor, working in lots of spare space alongside trumpeter Olu Dara, cellist Abdul Wadud, and percussionist Warren Smith – a really organic lineup that makes for some great music on the album! Dara's horn is often the boldest instrument on the record – blasting out at moments when Wadud and Smith are contemplating things a bit more cautiously – and the album really lets you hear the players putting together the whole thing as a unit, but from individual pieces of their collective souls. Titles include "Ear", "Mind", "Body", and "Heart". CD

Players here include the great Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, and Bill Harris on trombone – and rhythm is from Teddy Wilson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Krupa on drums – a swinging little unit that keeps plenty of room for warm solo lines in the set! One of Steve Lacy's great late 70s recordings for Hat Hut – a searing live performance that was one of his boldest efforts from the time! The group here are a quintet of familiar players – Steve Potts on alto and soprano sax, Irene Aebi on cello and voice, Kent Carter on bass, and Oliver Johnson on drums – all working together as a tremendously cohesive unit, with a dexterously angular feel on most of the numbers. Titles are all quite long, and with lots of choppy saxophone interplay – and Aebi performs a piece by Brion Gysin on the track "Dreams" 2CD set seems greatly expanded from the original album – and titles include "Raps", "The Way", "The Breath", "Stamps", "Bone", "Life On Its Way", and "Name". CD

Quite possibly our favorite installment so far in the Madlib Medicine Show series – as the set's a treasure trove of rare work from the many-faceted Yesterday's New Quintet combo – that genius funky jazz ensemble headed by Madlib! According to the notes, some of these cuts are from rare small-batch releases (although we're not even sure those exist) – and others are previously unreleased numbers that are finally seeing the light of day – all together a brilliant illustration of the sorts of sounds that Madlib's pulled up from the American underground of the 60s and 70s – weird space jazz, offbeat funk, modal moments, and more – played with completely amazing rhythms, and production that really lives up to the spirit of the inspirations! There's plenty of great keyboards, and all tracks are instrumentals – with titles that include "High Jazz" by The Kenny Cook Octet, "Pretty Eyes" by Jahari Massamba Unit, "Electronic Dimensions" by Generation Match, "Funky Butt (part 1)" by Poyser Riggins & Jackson, "Space & Time" by RMC, "Conquistador" by Yesterday's New Quintet, "Tarzan's Theme" by Big Black Foot Band, and "Kimo" by Joe McDuphrey Experience. Incredible early work from one of Germany's greatest modernists – one of the key records that showed the world that German jazz was way more than just a rehashing of American modes in the postwar years! This rare 1963 recording features the quintet of trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – a groundbreaking unit that includes tenorist Heinz Sauer, altoist Gunter Kronberg, bassist Gunter Lenz, and drummer Ralf Hubner – a fantastic combo that comes together in a stark modernist groove that's right up there with the best work of Ornette Coleman or Joe Harriott from the time – very rhythmic, in ways that offset the freedom of the horn solos beautifully – letting the saxes and trombones soar, while the bass and drums lock into a tight groove. The no-piano, three-horn frontline is incredibly strong – bracing and powerful, but never in a way that's too cold or modern, thanks to an inherent sense of soul in allt he players. Titles include "Varie", "Ballade Fur Jessica Rose", "Club Trois", "Set Em Up", and "Tension". CD

A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD
