New Direction UnitLive At Moers Festival ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $16.99 24.00
The group here definitely earns the "new direction" in their name – as they work at a level that's quite compelling – kind of their own variant of free jazz, but with a spaciousness that's definitely spiritual – and which also seems to reflect some elements of more traditional Japanese music too! The tracks are all quite long – and have a really different flavor, even as they each progress – no surprise given that the instrumentation is quite varied, even amidst the quintet of musicians – with Masayuki Takayanagi on electric guitar and gut guitar; Kenji Mori on alto, floute, clarinet, and shinobue; Akira Iijima on electric guitar and gut guitar; Nobuyoshi Ino on cello, and Yasuhiro Yamazaki on drums and a variety of percussion. Titles include "Bohimei", "Resistance", "Mass Hysterism", and a compelling take on "Subconscious Lee". CD

Yoshichika Tarue (Indigo Jam Unit)Rain Man's Story ... CD
Basis (Japan), 2010. Used ... $14.99 19.99
The pianist from Indigo Jam Unit – stepping out on a solo set with a completely different sound! Although IJU always have a tight, bass-heavy approach to funk in their music, always augmented by heavy piano from Yoshichika Tarue – this time around, the pianist is hitting warmer, more gentle modes – solo piano lines recorded with a beautifully echoey, almost watery quality! The sound is a bit hard to peg – the gentle soul of Keith Jarrett's 70s solo work, but with some of the intimate sentimentality of the spare non-guitar Durutti Column piano moments of the early 80s – a reference that's particularly apt, given the way this set was recorded. A fantastic set – and one that didn't exist in this way during the vinyl years of Impulse Records! The package provides important early work from these two musicians who'd go onto shape the avant side of jazz in the 60s – three tracks that Cecil Taylor recorded with Gil Evans for the label – and four more from the sessions for Roswell Rudd's Everywhere album! ✨✧ Indigo Jam UnitColin Curtis Presents Indigo Jam Unit ... LP
Jazz Room (UK), 2010s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A much-needed vinyl release of music from this wonderful band – one we've been loving for the past 15 years, through a slew of Japanese-only CD releases! Indigo Jam Unit have a wicked style that goes way beyond the "jam" in their name – as they're tightly jazzy, but with a very stripped-down quality – one that tends to focus on the funkiest moments in their tunes – even though their music isn't exactly funk! The group's a quartet, led by some monstrous lines on acoustic bass – warm, full, and flowing – set fire further by hard, heavy acoustic piano, plus drums, extra drums, and sometimes percussion – all used in these spare, chunky ways that are totally great! This set brings together some of their best cuts from a variety of albums – and titles include "Descarga", "La Tomatina", "Danza Eterna", "Matador", "Time", "Raindance", "4 Caminos", and "Rush". ✨✧ Cecil Taylor UnitEighth ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very moody performance from Cecil Taylor – one long reading of the piece "Calling It The 8th", originally presented as 2LP set, but finally getting its due here as a single CD that presents the whole thing from start to finish with no interruption! Although as free as some of Taylor's other material from the time, the work also has a sound that's somehow more introspective than some of the others – possibly because of the rumbling bass work of William Parker, which seems to ground the record in an earthy territory that has the players circling back to home after taking freer flights on their solos. The group is a quartet, with Taylor on piano, Jimmy Lyons on alto, Parker on bass, and Rashid Bakr on drums. CD

✨✧ Indigo Jam UnitPirates ... CD
Basis (Japan), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bass-heavy grooves from Indigo Jam Unit – easily one of the hardest hitting combos on the Japanese scene in recent years! The tunes here are very heavy on acoustic bass – played in loud, bold lines alongside piano, bass, drums, and added percussion – all recorded with a really full sort of feel, in joyously searching grooves that owe a lot to soul and modal jazz of the 60s and 70s! There's a stripped-down quality to the album that's really appealing – a focus on the core elements and rhythmic moments – making the record a delight for groovehounds, although it's also got a strong jazz component too. Titles include "Pirates", "Rumble", "Trailer", "Raindrop", "Time", "Nostalgia", and "Himawari". CD

Damn, we really love these guys – and they're one of the best-kept secrets around, quite possibly because of the high price of their Japanese CDs! This album's quite possibly their strongest moment so far, and shows just a few more sensitive sounds at times – which makes for a depth we might not have expected a few albums back – making us mighty happy we've been with these guys since the start. Titles include "Misty Grove", "Anima", "Rain Man", "Monkey Trick", "Roots", "Voyager", and "La Tomatina". CD

✨✧ Strictly Jaz Unit (Glenn Underground & Boo Williams)Tempest ... LP
Strictly Jaz Unit, 2019. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
That's Jaz with one "z", not two – and the difference here is key, because the music is all soulful house, of the sort we've come to love from Glenn Underground – who works here with Boo Williams to make a set that's one of his greatest to date! Keyboards are the lead instrument over the rhythms – and they often get all these cool moogy, moody lines as they spin things out – sometimes with a solo presence that's a lot deeper than usual for this sort of work – almost recalling that 90s era when overseas house musicians first fell in love with Herbie Hancock! Yet there's also a straighter, more soulful approach going on here – pure Chicago at the core – with cuts that include "Time Of Speed Not Day", "The Flat", "Passing You By", "Heard Syndrome", "The Hour", "Near The End", and "Tempestuous". Cecil TaylorUnit Structures (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 28.99
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists – who operate based on a system of energy and impulses described by Taylor in the notes, at a level that's maybe one of his most inventive, ambitious expressions of the decade! The whole lineup is great – with especially strong horn work from Eddie Gale on trumpet, Jimmy Lyons on alto, and Ken McIntyre on alto, oboe, and bass clarinet – and Taylor's piano gets accompaniment from two groundbreaking bassists – Henry Grimes and Alan Silva – plus drums from Andrew Cyrille. Given the lineup, and the format, the whole thing almost feels more like one of the BYG/Actuel avant sessions than Blue Note in the 60s – and titles include "Steps", "Enter Evening (Soft Line Structure)", "Unit Structure/As Of A Now/Section", and "Tales (8 Whisps)". Tohru AizawaTachibana ... CD
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoEarly Combinations ... CD
Nessa, 1967. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
An important pre-Art Ensemble Of Chicago moment – one that has most of the group coming together in a pair of rare recordings in the home of Lester Bowie – already sounding amazingly creative as a unit! The sound is almost freer than later work by the group – or certainly at the fierceness they hit right at the start of the 70s – and the lineup here includes both Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on a range of reed instruments, Lester Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Malachi Favors on bass – plus strong input from Thurman Barker on drums, and an appearance on one track from Curtis Clark on bass! The sound is wonderfully raw, and surprisingly clear for a home recording – and the power of the music is undeniable. Both tracks – "A To Ericka" and "Quintet" – were previously part of the Art Ensemble box set on Nessa – but that's been out of print for years, and together these compositions work wonderfully as a full album! Charles BrackeenRhythm X – The Music Of Charles Brackeen (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $41.99 44.99
The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

Jeff Parker sits in on guitar and organ – and the record's got a free-flowing sound that's really wonderful, and which reminds us a lot of the best modal moments of the 70s, mixed with some of the more rhythmic sounds of the AACM. A killer rare gem from the 70s – served up in this warm mellow take on funky soul, with plenty of jazzy licks in the mix too! The production is great – cool and compressed, so that the vocals are folded nicely onto the grooves – which are mostly in this midtempo mode that chugs along in a really unified pace throughout the record – almost making the whole thing feel like some funky suite of tracks that work together as a unit! The vibe is almost a bit in the Sugar Billy mode – indie funk that's nicely away from the mainstream, and with a groove that's more pre-disco overall – on a great set of tracks that include "You Must Be From Heaven", "Rainbow Men", "Freeway", "Love Rope", "Super Love", and "Save The Young Ones". An incredible return to form for Billy Harper – and a landmark album recorded at the end of the 80s, when we'd all but given up on him! The session returns Billy to the majesty of his 70s work – placing him in the setting of long tracks, modal rhythms, and spiritual motivation – the uniquely Harper territory first forged with Lee Morgan and Max Roach, sounding better than ever here, with all the confidence of his youth. The group's a quintet – with Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Francesca Tanksley on piano, Clarence Seay on bass, and Newman Baker on drums – working perfectly as a unit, with a power level that's simply amazing. Harper's the main star, reaching towards the heavens with some incredible solos – but he also clearly knows that he wouldn't be able to do what he does without the great level of support he's getting from the rest of the group. Quite possibly our favorite installment so far in the Madlib Medicine Show series – as the set's a treasure trove of rare work from the many-faceted Yesterday's New Quintet combo – that genius funky jazz ensemble headed by Madlib! According to the notes, some of these cuts are from rare small-batch releases (although we're not even sure those exist) – and others are previously unreleased numbers that are finally seeing the light of day – all together a brilliant illustration of the sorts of sounds that Madlib's pulled up from the American underground of the 60s and 70s – weird space jazz, offbeat funk, modal moments, and more – played with completely amazing rhythms, and production that really lives up to the spirit of the inspirations! There's plenty of great keyboards, and all tracks are instrumentals – with titles that include "High Jazz" by The Kenny Cook Octet, "Pretty Eyes" by Jahari Massamba Unit, "Electronic Dimensions" by Generation Match, "Funky Butt (part 1)" by Poyser Riggins & Jackson, "Space & Time" by RMC, "Conquistador" by Yesterday's New Quintet, "Tarzan's Theme" by Big Black Foot Band, and "Kimo" by Joe McDuphrey Experience. Albert MangelsdorffOne Tension ... CD
CBS/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Incredible early work from one of Germany's greatest modernists – one of the key records that showed the world that German jazz was way more than just a rehashing of American modes in the postwar years! This rare 1963 recording features the quintet of trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – a groundbreaking unit that includes tenorist Heinz Sauer, altoist Gunter Kronberg, bassist Gunter Lenz, and drummer Ralf Hubner – a fantastic combo that comes together in a stark modernist groove that's right up there with the best work of Ornette Coleman or Joe Harriott from the time – very rhythmic, in ways that offset the freedom of the horn solos beautifully – letting the saxes and trombones soar, while the bass and drums lock into a tight groove. The no-piano, three-horn frontline is incredibly strong – bracing and powerful, but never in a way that's too cold or modern, thanks to an inherent sense of soul in allt he players. Titles include "Varie", "Ballade Fur Jessica Rose", "Club Trois", "Set Em Up", and "Tension". CD

Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/FourmenonlyModern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/Fourmenonly – Complete Recordings (Trees/Position 2000/Fourmenonly Vol 1/Science Fiction Stories) (3CD set) ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... $38.99 42.99
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

Drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki is a monster on the kit – snapping things into the groove from the very first note, and driven on strongly by the basslines of Shigeki Umezawa – while Mariko Nakabayashi warms things up in a wonderful way with all sorts of great keyboard solos – often in an electric piano mode, but sometimes with a wider sonic reach as well! The New York Art Quartet were one of the finest avant garde jazz groups to circle around the loose ESP/New York avant scene of the mid 60s – but they only recorded a rare few albums before breaking apart and going onto other groups. Members Milford Graves, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Reggie Workman, and frequent guest Amiri Baraka are all jazz giants in their own right – but until they regrouped briefly in 1999, the world hadn't heard them play as a unit for years. Fortunately, the regrouping showed the group to be every bit as great as in the old days – and the concert captured on this CD is a welcome addition to their all-to-small catalog. A beautiful, beautiful record from Horace Silver – one of his great 70s experiments for Blue Note – and a set that has him working in the same "jazz with voices" mode explored by Max Roach and Donald Byrd in earlier years! The core of the set is focused around the great work of Silver's combo – with Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Ron Carter on bass, and Al Foster on drums – a wonderfully cohesive unit that arcs and turns with all these sweet little shifts – keeping up with the creative rhythms directed from Silver, while cascading through a beautiful range of tones and colors as well! The vocals follow suit beautifully – directed by Alan Copeland, but with a much more soulful approach than his 60s material – bursting forth with this warmth and sense of tone that really matches the instrumentation. A fantastic update of a classic portable turntable – one that's been a standard on the Japanese market for many years, but which is remade here with even better features! The unit has a red plastic body, with a surprisingly durable level of construction – and it's got a nice built-in speaker that plays nice and loud! Like the others of it's type, this one's got a cover that snaps in place, space for 6 AA batteries, an AC adapter for US current (for when you don't want to use up the batteries), 2 speeds (33 and 45rpm), a headphone jack, and even a pitch control, so you can change the speed of the records! We think these portables are best for taking around when you're out diggin' for vinyl – rather than a replacement for your stereo at home – as the unit is easy to take out and spin wherever you want, even outside or at a party! Plus – and this is even cooler – the turntable comes with a clamp so that you can actually play records upside down. You can even hang the record player on the wall – and play records that way! And unlike the previous version, the headphone jack is in stereo – which is mighty nice too. Also, this unit comes with an improved Audio Technica stylus – and an improved speaker for greater sound. A soaring blend of rare club tracks from the glory days of the American disco underground – music that was cut in the deep shadows of the mainstream market at the time, and which has gone on to have a lot longer staying power too! The cuts here are all from very obscure releases on tiny labels around the country – most so small, the records were issued on 7" singles, not the usual 12" club DJ release – which has made them even more overlooked in the passing decades, given that so many collectors of this sort of music are digging for the larger format! Yet interest in rare club from the pre-house years has never been stronger – and a set like this is a great way to glimpse a scene that was out of reach even to most folks who were around at the time – a smoking set of 17 groovers that include "Can You Dig It" by Teakwood, "Bay Trippin" by Parnassus, "Come Along With Me & Party" by Monofide, "I Wanna Dance" by Compton Hodge, "Feel In" by The Unit III, "My Woman My Woman" by Joshua Jackson, "She's The One" by Nature, "Bronco Queen" by Van Buren, and "Sport City Rock" by Earl Turner. Fantastic funk from the Belgian scene of the 70s – a really mad mix of sounds and styles, and a really revelatory set overall! Few people might use the words "Belgium" and "funk" in the same sentence – but that may well change after this sweet set gets a few spins – as the whole thing's a stunning array of groovers that not only match the best jazz, funk, and sound library tracks from other European scenes in the 70s – they also do a great job of taking on the best America had to offer too! Belgium was no stranger to soul and funk – given its fervent 60s soul collectors scene, and the nation's role as a crossroads in Europe – which left it open to plenty of influence from visiting musicians, including American artists as well. You can definitely hear all that coming into play here – as the work is nicely fresh, and very free of overdone cliches or easy references – as these guys all take the best bits that might have influenced them, and jumbled them up into something really new. The scope of sounds is wonderful – and titles include "Funky Tramway" by Mad Unity, "Sunshine Star" by Open Sky Unit, "Gimme Some More Of That" by Plus, "Funky" by Andre Brasseur, "Avenue Louise" by Black Blood, "Music & Co" by Les Helions, "Balek" by Placebo, "Librium" by Chicken Curry & His Pop Percussion Orchestra, "Top Less" by Alex Scorier, "Stories" by Chakachas, "Ostinato Bass" by Rene Costy, "Memories" by Amadeo, "Viva Boma" by Cos, "Pop In Three" by The Rapture, "Smoke" by Leo Cavallo, "Marakesh" by Hein Huysmans Kwintet, "One For You" by Doug Lucas, "Put Everything Together" by Plus, "Lord Funk" by Super Funk Special, and "Humpty Dumpty" by Placebo. BGO (UK), 1968/1969. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two solid albums by the Carr-Rendall Quintet – one of greatest British jazz combos of the late 60s – nicely packaged in one set! Phase III is the third legendary album from the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet – and a set that really has the combo stretching out in the new kind of freedoms offered by the Landsowne series at the time! The group had already made fantastic waves on their previous two albums – but here, the songs are longer, the ideas more expansive, and the overall sound is more intense – as the tenor, soprano sax, and flute of Rendell is balanced with both trumpet and flugelhorn from Carr – then driven even more strongly than before by the piano of Michael Garrick, who's really at his creative peak at this point! The rest of the group features very strong work from Dave Green on bass and Trevor Tomkin on drums – cementing a rock-solid unit – and titles include "Les Nieges D'Antan", "Black Marigolds", "Bath Sheba", and "Crazy Jane". The Live album a is masterpiece of British jazz from the end of the 60s – a set that doesn't need to answer at all to any of the jazz styles coming from America at the time – as it's sound and vision is so bold, so unique, it's a completely massive statement on its own! The set may well represent the pinnacle of this creative combo – as pianist Michael Garrick seems to be taking an even stronger role than before, and certainly gets some great space for expression on the longer live tracks within – shading things with that amazing sense of tone and timing that made his own albums of the 60s so important to British jazz, but maybe even more incredible here in the company of Carr's trumpet and flugelhorn, and Rendell's work on tenor, soprano sax, clarinet, and flute. As before, the bass of Dave Green and drums of Trevor Tompkins are a key element of the music – the amazing energy at the core – on titles that include "Pavanne", "Nimjam", "Voices", "You've Said It", "Vignette", and "On Track". Albert Mangelsdorff is caught here right in the middle of an amazing 70s run for MPS Records – working with a killer unit that features mighty drums from Elvin Jones and heavy bass from Palle Danielsson – players who really help give Mangelsdorff a lot of power and focus in his horn – energy that's more harnessed in and driven forward than some of his freer albums of the time! The sounds on the horn are amazing – hardly what you'd expect from most conventional players – and it's wonderful to hear Jones working with such an instrument, given that most of his groups of the time were usually heavy on reeds. Titles include "For Peter", "I Mo Take You To My Hospital And Cut Your Liver Out", "Oh Horn!", and "Up and Down Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Storyville, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare non-Columbia Records 60s session by the Thelonious Monk Quartet – that magical group that featured the modern piano giant in the lead, with tremendous tenor from Charlie Rouse, as well as bass from John Ore and drums from Frankie Dunlop! Consider the outfit to be the modern jazz variant on the Dave Brubeck Quartet – like that one, a rock-solid unit of players who seem to share equal roles in the magic of the music, with a long legacy of years together – but also a group that's a lot more freewheeling in their sense of experimentation! Rouse is a treasure, as always – and the set was done for Danish radio in 1961, and is very well-recorded. Titles include "Epistrophy", "Jackie-ing", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "Round Midnight", "Off Minor", and "Ba Lue Bolivar Ba Lues Are". CD

Nirvana's final album – one that's as poetic as it is heavy, and as beautiful as it is brutal! In Utero's legacy gets greater and greater over the years, not only because its mastermind extinguished himself not too long after its release, but more than that, it's simply one of the greatest rock albums of its time. Angry, fed up, yet oddly righteous in its angst, in a way that makes it easy to get into despite all the raw nerve anguish. A really beautiful early 80s set from bassist Sirone – one that's adventurous, yet tight and subtle – and it was only temporarily released prior to its rescue by the necessary Unheard Music Series! Sirone may be best remembered for his Revolutionary Ensemble work in the 70s, and this set from the beginning of the 80s sounds pretty incredible. It kicks off with a 9 minute wood flute solo by Sirone before Dennis Charles rolls in with a rumbling drums and Sirone nimbly thumps in with his masterful bass. Claude Lawrence fills out the trio nicely on alto sax. The trio spends as much time in expressive solos as it does as a crack unit, and sounds wonderful in both capacities. A really sweet set that deserved this respectful CD release! Tracks include "Flute Song", "Eyes Of The Wind", The Journey", "When It's Over" and "Vision". CD

An explosion of groundbreaking sounds from the 60s – all records issued in the magical year of 1965 – with a fresh vibe that would influence years of soul, psych, and garage styles to come! Jon Savage has already given us two other great year-based collections on Ace, but this one might be one of his most impressive – given that most folks tend to overlook the musical power of 1965, in favor of bigger explosions later in the 60s – but all of which were inspired by these earlier moments of fire! You'll definitely recognize some of the tunes here, but with his usual genius, Jon Savage has a way of mixing the familiar with the obscure – coming up with new ways to put everything together, and really opening up our ears in the process. As with previous volumes, the notes are huge – with plenty of details on the sounds within – and the 2CD package features a whopping 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" by The Silkie, "Concrete & Clay" by Unit Four Plus Two, "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" by The Byrds, "Buttermilk (part 1)" by Sly, "Boot Leg" by Booker T & The MGs, "Fortune Teller" by Tony Jackson with The Vibrations, "That's The Way It's Got To Be" by The Poets, "Come & Stay With Me" by Marianne Faithful, "See My Friends" by The Kinks, "Too Many People" by The Leaves, "I've Got Mine" by The Small Faces, "The Duck" by Jackie Lee, "The Story Of John Hardy" by Sir Douglas Quintet, "We Sell Soul" by The Spades, "Blow Your Mind" by The Gas Co, "You Just Gotta Know My Mind" by Karen Verros, "Can You Hear Me" by Lee Dorsey, "London Town" by Pretty Things, "Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl" by The Barbarians, "I'm Alive" by The Hollies, "Leaving Here" by The Birds, and "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash & The Crawlers. One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! Jazzy grooves and modal rhythms – a great Japanese take on the sound of the Italian Schema label – filled with enough dancefloor numbers to live up to the Tokyo Dream in the title! The work here is pulled from all eras of Schema – a few early tracks, some key middle moments, and a few more recent ones – all served up as a batch of a dozen great groovers that sparkle warmly throughout! Titles include "Street Jazz Unit" by Street Jazz Unit, "Jet Sounds" by Nicola Conte, "Another Face" by Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi, "I Knew The Way" by Invisible Session, "Mutantes" by Soulstance, "Agitazione" by Schema Sextet, "Que Bandeira" by Rosalia De Souza with Marcos Valle, "Eclipse" by Soulstance, and "Gosto De Que E Bom" by Gerardo Frisina.
