LEDLife Emission Display – A Nujazz Funkelectro Brazilian Journey ... CD
Funky Juice (Italy), 2006. Used ... $2.99
Sweet grooves from the Funky Juice team – a set that definitely lives up to its promise of nujazz and Brazilian in the title! The tunes here are a bit more programmed than some LED's Italian contemporaries – but the sound is still warm and soulful, thanks to just the right balance of electric rhythms and live instrumentation on keyboards, sax, and guitar. Some of the best numbers have breezy female vocals, but some cuts are instrumentals too – and if we had to pick a reference, we might say that the album's right up there with some of the work on the Sister Bossa series from Irma! Titles include "You Turn", "Bossa De Saudade", "Taormina Chase", "A Clave", "Triste Alegre", "Central Funk Park", "Inside", "Rolling Box", and "Frisco Party". CD

Os MorcegosRimini Samba ... CD
Funky Juice (Italy), 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A sweet Italian Fender Rhodes combo – one who play here with a great mix of jazz and Brazilian touches! The group's contemporary, but they've got a sound that takes us back to Italian groups of the 70s – especially Os Cabildos, and their warm and wonderful blend of a variety of different styles. Many tracks feature some guest instrumentation added to the trio – bits of vibes, tenor, trumpet, and percussion – plus female vocals on 2 of the numbers in the set. The Rhodes is present throughout – sometimes really dominating the tunes, sometimes kicking back and hitting a great flow in the background – and the record's easily one of the best we've ever heard on the Funky Juice label. Titles include "Rimini Samba", "Elephunking", "BBB", "Venus & Mars", "Taboo", "Capocotta Beach", "Sambud", "Mon Entourage", and "Coral". CD

✨✧ VariousBlue Juice – Squeeze . . . Till It Runs Down Your Leg ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest comps to come out in the Blue Note series! This lists Blue Note as the label, but digs waaaaay deeper into the Capitol-Emi holdings to come up with a wild assortment of funky groovy cuts. This is an insane mixture of funky jazz, soul, and easy listening cuts – with a million tracks you'll never find otherwise, like "Streets Of Calcutta" by Anada Shankar, "Tighten Up" by Benny Gordon, "Look Into The Flower" by Jimmy Caravan, "Sookie Sookie" by Tina Britt, "Mas Que Nada" by Elza Soares, "Hey Girl" by Gene Harris, "MSP" by Chico Hamilton, "Killiano" by Johnny Lytle, "No Problema" by Jerome Richardson, and "Samba For Maria" by Norman Connors. Loads more excellent cuts, and a great document of how far the groove scene has gone in the past few years! CD

✨✧ Cloud OneDisco Juice/Disco Charleston Hopscotch ... 12-inch
P&P, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Fantastic spacey club tracks from this legendary group! We know that the cut "Disco Juice" has been reissued elsewhere, but this excellent reproduction of the original 12" single features the full original mix – and it's a monstrous blend of jazzy vibes, moogy keyboards, and pounding funky dancefloor beats! The flipside is just as great, too – and even though it's got a stupid name, the cut's got a killer hook and this storming instrumental groove that mixes spacey moog and heavy keyboards in a wonderful way! Essential – and the best single so far in the P&P reissue series! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Joe KemfaJungle Juice ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We're not sure what's in this jungle juice, but it's clearly having a great effect on Joe Kemfa – allowing him to move and groove in a really great way – as he leads his group through a sweet later take on the sound of Lagos funk! The album's got a great blend of rhythms and some spacier keyboards – open, electric modes that often run in a direction that's not necessarily dictated by the groove – these spacey washes of sound that are layered in by Tessy Allan – who handles moog, organ, and even a bit of string ensemble keys! Joe himself plays some mighty tight guitar in the rhythms – with a wah-wah vibe that kicks in nicely on the best numbers – and his vocals range from rougher funky soul, to some smoother modes, depending on the tunes. Titles include "Jungle Magic Music", "Jungle Juice", "African Fever", "On My Way", and "I Got To Make It". CD

BlowflyButterfly ... CD
Weird World/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $11.99
The raunchy one is at it again – serving up funky, filthy, and funny parodies of 70s soul and pop songs with more than enough bad language to make even the most street hip hopper turn red! The band is nice and tight on most of the tracks, grooving hard with a funky wah-wah sound underneath Blow's freaky comedy bits – and providing the funk that really makes the album work, because we'd hate to imagine it without the music! Titles include "Suck Train", "Rap Dirty", "Juice It Up", "Niggaz Ain't Sh*t", "Neither One Of Us", and "Easter Bunny". CD

✨✧ Jimmy McGriffJimmy McGriff Greatest Hits ... CD
Blue Note, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $7.99
Excellent organ groovers from the great Jimmy McGriff! The set pulls together some fantastic tracks from Jimmy's years at Veep, Sue, Solid State, and Capitol – including many great short funky cuts that haven't really shown up on other reissues before. The fidelity of the set is way way better than other reissues – and the CD is filled with hard wailing Hammond groovers that will blow your mind! Jimmy's touch on the keys was amazing back in these days – filled with loads of straight jazz fire, but also touched with a keen sense of humor that has him throwing in these amazing curve balls on the keys, riffing away in surprising twists and turns that always keep the cuts interesting! Titles include "Criss Cross", "Step One", "Blue Juice", "Black Pearl", "The Worm", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Fat Cakes", "Where It's At", "Cash Box", "Kiko", "The Last Minute", and "Discotheque". CD

BGP (UK), Mid 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterful set of old school funk & soul put together by DJ Andy Smith – who also worked some magic a few years back for the BGP label on the Northern Soul tip – this time out doing his thing with prime funk from the late 60s & early 70s! Smith does a excellent job of mixing sample classics that helped build golden age hip hop, many deeper tracks – funk nuggets from The Blackbyrds, Billy Garner, Funk Inc, Spanky Wilson and many more! Vinyl version is not a continous mix like the CD – and works as a straight up, excellent funky compilation. ✨✧ Weldon IrvineSpirit Man ... LP
RCA/Nature Sounds, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Massively funky work from the mighty Weldon Irvine – sublimely cosmic and filled with soul throughout! The vibe here is a bit more focused than on some of Weldon's earlier albums – a moody blend of electric keys, heavy percussion, and some slight bits of jazzy solo work by trumpeters Charles Sullivan and Everett Blood Hollins, and saxophonist Sonny Fortune – both players who really help the album find some soulful structure! The album's all-instrumental, and has Weldon really taking off on the keyboards – not just using them for main solos, but also dropping in cool noisy bits and analogue effects that really sound great – almost out-Herbieing Herbie Hancock for the record, and turning in some of his biggest classics on wax! Titles include the massive sample cut "We Gettin' Down", plus "Jungle Juice", "Blast Off", "Softly", "Power & The Glory", "Yasmin", and "Pogo Stick". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jackie MittooJackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King At Studio One ... LP
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Killer funky organ – and 100% Dynamite! Jackie Mittoo is one of the all-time great organists – as essential to Jamaica as Booker T was to Memphis, or Jimmy McGriff was to New York. He's legendary these days as the player who completely transformed the Hammond sound with his unique Jamaican instrumental style during his early years with the Skatalites, and on his later solo recordings for Studio One. This set's probably the first time Mittoo's work has been properly packaged and remastered – and the folks at Soul Jazz have done an amazing job of selecting just the right tracks for such a project. The whole thing wails along with a stone rocksteady groove – with plenty of nice drum parts and funky rhythm bits underneath Jackie's soulful organ. If you dug the label's 100% Dynamite series, you'll really dig this one – and the whole thing's very much in the same vein. Tracks include "Drum Song", "Reggae Rock", "Hot Tamale", "Killer Diller", "Black Organ", "Stereo Freeze", "Wall Street", "Darker Shade Of Black", "Juice Box", and "Killer Diller". ✨✧ Pazant BrothersBrothers Funk – Rare New York City Funk 1969 to 1975 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing funk from one of the greatest combos on the New York scene of the early 70s – Pazant Brothers Eddie & Al, heard here on a host of their greatest recordings! The package goes way past any other Pazant reissues we've seen – and features not only work from the group's famous Vanguard album, but way way more work from a host of early singles for the RCA, GWP, and Vigor labels! The 22 track package is overstuffed with horn-heavy funky grooves that mark the Pazants as one of the hottest things going at the time – snapping on the beat with a tightness learned from their old boss Pucho, but also a willingness to explore brassier grooves in a style that seems to be influenced from the New Orleans and Texas scenes of the late 60s. Producer/arranger Edward Bland had a good hand in much of this work – giving the tracks a gritty, nitty, Perception/Today kind of groove – and a few of the very best numbers on the record even bring in some wicked scratchy guitar into the mix! Includes early and later (Vanguard) versions of "Skunk Juice", "New Orleans", "Toe Jam", "Work Song", and "A Gritty Nitty" – plus "Chick A Boom", "Greasy Greens", "Fever", "Juicy Lucy", "Chicken Scratch", "Fly Vines", and "Back To Beaufort".
