Full ForceFull Force (with bonus tracks) ... CD
FTG, 1985. Used ... $14.99
Full Force getting busy in a mid 80s groove – the first set the group cut as a headline attraction – and a nice mix of 80s post electro R&B with plenty of influences from the hip hop producers of the time! The group's biggest crossover success was as the songwriting and production force behind some huge hits of the day, from UTFO to Lisa Lisa and many points between – and their own records were a unique mix of period group R&B and rap production that proved to be quite influential. 80s club funk, soul and a couple ballads from Full Force! Titles includes "Alice, I Want You Just For Me!", "Unselfish Lover", "Please Stay", "United", "Girl If You Take Me Home", "Half A Chance", "Let's Dance Against The Wall" and more. This CD version has 4 bonus tracks: "Alice (Bang Zoom)", "Girl (Funky Fresh Def Mix)", "So Unselfish (It's Okay, It's Okay): and "Let's Dance Against The Wall (12" Mix)". CD

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoFull Force ... CD
ECM, 1980. Used ... $9.99
One of the few ECM sides recorded by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – easily some of the hippest work the label issued at the time, and a key way for the avant collective to get a bit of large audience exposure! The sound is still very much in the best AEC style here – and if anything, ECM's sensitivity to sound has allowed the group to explore some of the farther reaches of their sonic sensibilities – those contemplative moments that could sometimes be lost in the hands of other producers, captured beautifully here in a range of instruments far too many to mention! Some of the bolder tracks have Lester Bowie's trumpet right out front – almost hinting at his own solo association with the label – and titles include "Care Free", "Magg Zelma", "Full Force", and "Old Time Southside Street Dance". Nicola ConteJet Sounds (full LP) ... LP
Schema/Fez (Italy), 2000. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99
Wonderful wonderful wonderful – and one of the best albums we've ever heard of modern bossa and soundtrack grooves! For years, Nicola Conte has been a seminal force in the new Italian scene – working as a DJ, promoter, producer, and sometimes recording artist under the odd 12" single. This album marks his first full effort – and after years of bubbling under in the Italian scene, Nicola emerges as one of the most perfect-formed artists we've heard in years. The whole album's a breathtaking mix of 60s bossa, soundtrack, and easy themes – put together with never a dull moment, and always a focus on the kind of mid and uptempo grooves that have been pushing the Italian and German scenes for the last 5 years. The record features great mixes from a few of Nicola's 12" singles, plus a wealth of excellent new material that really expands his groove wonderfully – with a totally real, totally honest sound that pushes past the gazillion retro remix throwaway albums that you'll find stuffing the listening stations at the megastores! Tracks include "Il Cerchio Rosso", "Dossier Omega", "Trappola Mortale", "Jazz Pour Dadine", and "Bossa Per Due". LP, Vinyl record album

UK/RPM (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $34.99
The complete recordings of Kursaal Flyers – one of the sharper, wittier groups of the UK pub rock generation – although one that never made the leap to our side of the Atlantic! There's a really special vibe going on here – the kind of group who were clearly raised on the roots of rock and roll, but who have a wit and talent that allows them to push things forward with all these little twists and turns, almost as if they're making a commentary on contemporary rock while serving up a pretty good entry in the genre! The group recorded for the same UK label that issued the early material by 10CC – and there's a similar balance going on here, right down to some really inventive production that makes the whole thing come together nicely. The package features four full albums by the group – Chocs Away, Great Artiste, Golden Mile, Five Live Kursaals, and A Former Tour De Force Is Forced To Tour – plus 17 more bonus tracks, and a big booklet of notes! Life Force TrioLiving Room ... CD
Plug Research, 2006. Used ... $4.99
A brilliant full LP from Life Force Trio – another feather in the cap of Carlos Nino, the force behind Ammon Contact, Build An Ark, and a number of other hip projects! The sound here is kind of a mellower, more stripped-down approach to the vibe laid out by Build An Ark – one that's heavily influenced by the spacier side of 70s soul jazz, but which also concentrates more on the farther reaches – using analogue electronics to set the tone for the tunes in a Sun Ra-styled way, while bits of percussion and other instrumentation filter slowly into the mix. The sound is very otherworldly – quite cosmic, but much more indirect than other current work that falls into that side of the spectrum! Album features performances from jazz legends Jesse Sharps, Derf Reklaw, and Dwight Trible – and titles include "Coliseum", "Space Flowers/Carousel", "Starship", "Blue Line Watts Bound", "Tone Poem", "Luminous", and "Alice". Archie Shepp & The Full Moon EnsembleLive In Antibes Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Varese, Late 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
A seminal live set from tenorist Archie Shepp – and some of his freest, least-structured material ever! Shepp's still a righteous force here on his horn, but there also seems to be equal emphasis on the contributions of all members of the group – woven together in a really rich tapestry of sound, but with less of the structuring righteous concepts of some of Archie's other work – especially his sides for Impulse. Shepp had really been experiencing some new freedoms on the French scene of the late 60s – even more so than in the US avant outfield – and you can definitely hear him taking flight here, with a like-minded group of players that includes Clifford Thornton on trombone and shenai, Alan Shorter on flugelhorn, Joseph Dujean on guitar, Beb Guerin on bass, and Claud Delcloo on drums. This first part of the live set features one long track – "The Early Bird" – a slow building number that goes increasingly outside as it progresses, featuring some very over the top solo work from Shepp, who also plays a bit of piano on the set! Piano returns on "Huru" – another long track that has Shepp laying down these beautiful blocky passages that are surprisingly personal amidst the freer energy of the group. CD

Seven full albums from Tangerine Dream, all served up in a single set, with bonus tracks too – all as a wonderful document of this second chapter of their career! During these years, Tangerine Dream had moved from the Krautrock underground to the spotlight of a new electronic music generation – as pioneers who opened the doors for many, and were still able to stay ahead of the game – thanks in part to growing exposure on the soundtrack scene! Most of these records still have the group working in their strong longform mode – with very extended tracks – and two albums, Logos and Encore, are both live albums that show that the group were every bit as compelling on stage as they were in the studio. The tunes have a nicely cooking feel throughout – even when they're more gentle ones – and the record's a good reminder that outside of the studio, Wes could sometimes play with a bit more force on the strings – raspily hitting notes that explode off the guitar with tremendous precision and a good deel of feeling. Continental/Lion, 1973. Used ... $14.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". AtmosphereSeven's Travels ... CD
Rhymesayers/Epitaph, 2003. Used ... $1.99
Atmosphere returns wielding their signature sound full force! What they've come out with this round is by far their most experimental – definitely fresher and more distinct than the "safety" of God Loves Ugly. Slug bounces along melodically, tortured and true to his nature, yet he comes off a little (just a little) more optimistic this time and he recites more than just tales of love lost. He STILL is at his tightest when weaving wonderful heart-wrenching stories instead of bragging, yet I don't think you hear the name Lucy once on this album. Sean Daley, the philosopher? – maybe we'll see more and more of that in the future. ANT's production is sounding much much better since God Loves Ugly – these beats pound just a little harder, seemingly influenced by punk rock, seventies rock, and folk rock (any rock). There still is a whole lotta soul in there, which is very nice, yet he still ain't afraid to pitch the formula, say sample some off kilter scatting or a ripping metal guitar. Tracks include "Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know", "Cats Van Bags", "National Disgrace", "Liquor Lyles Cool July". "Good Times", "Keys To Life Vs 15 Minutes Of Fame", "Reflections" and more. CD

Beau BrummelsIntroducing The Beau Brummels ... LP
Autumn/Trading Places (UK), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The first full album from The Beau Brummels – an early Autumn Records effort before their headier days at Warner – cut with a style that could well make the group a key force to stop the British Invasion of the 60s! There's a great sense of jangle-pop throughout – a slight twang that would later unfold in different ways in Bradley's Barn, but which here works to give the tunes this little sense of sadness amidst the warmer melodies – which themselves are particularly great, and much better-crafted than some of the other US groups of this nature at the time. The boys definitely borrow a bit from The Beatles (including a name that gave them placement right next to the fab four in the record racks) – but maybe they're also drawing on some of the folk harmony groups from the SF scene they called home, too. Titles include "Laugh Laugh", "Just A Little", "Oh Lonesome Me", "They'll Make You Cry", "Stick Like Glue", "Not Too Long Ago", and "I Want More Loving". LP, Vinyl record album

Marc BenhamBiotope ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2020. Used ... $11.99
This isn't the first album from Parisian pianist Marc Benham, but it might be the first that really caught our attention – a strong trio set that really has Benham exploding on the keys from the very first note! Benham's got an especially strong touch on the low notes – really making all this resonance on the keyboard in ways that dominate even on the ballads – force that's full, but never overdone – but a pointed presence that really sets him apart from the rest, in ways that aren't easy to explain, yet which come through right away after even just a casual listen to the album! The trio also features John Hebert on bass and Eric McPherson on drums, who can be as lively as Benham, but who also seem very much driven by the energy of the leader – on titles that include "Year Of The Monkey", "Pablo", "Con Alma", "La Suite De Fibonacci", "Samurai Sauce", and "Airegin". Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". Yvonne FairBitch Is Black ... CD
Tamla (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
Heavy heavy funk from the mighty Yvonne Fair – a 70s bad soul sister that we'd rank right up there with Betty Davis! Yvonne got her start working with James Brown in a sweeter mode, but by the time of this mid 70s debut, she'd hit a really hard-wailing sort of style – one that had the righteous vocal lead of singers like Davis, Maxayn, or a rare few others – and which gets support here from some really full, rich production from Norman Whitfield! Whitfield brings in bits of strings alongside the heavier bass, drums, and keyboards – and makes for a unique mix that almost goes a bit southern soul, while still staying in the hipper styles of 70s Motown – letting Yvonne get a bit personal on a few tear-jerking numbers, and come wailing back with full force on the funkier ones. Titles include the classics "Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On" and "It Should Have Been Me" – plus "Let Your Hair Down", "Love Ain't No Toy", "Tell Me Something Good", "It's Bad For Me To See You", "Stay A Little Longer", and "Walk Out The Door If You Wanna". Frank FosterHere & Now ... LP
Catalyst, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
Very different work than usual from Frank Foster – and pretty darn great! The album was put together by arranger Billy Mitchell – with a warm and sunny take on soul jazz that's every bit the best side of the Catalyst Records sound – kind of a sweeter, slightly electric take on the genre that's different from the styles going down at some of the other indies during the other part of the decade. Foster's tone is in full force here – but his overall playing is reigned in a bit from his more frenetic recordings with Elvin Jones – a good thing by us, as the record allows him to explore sound in much different ways. The rest of the group is equally great – with players that include Art Webb on flute, Harold Mabern on piano, Roland Prince on guitar, Freddie Waits on drums, and Richard Williams on trumpet. Tunes have an arranged feel that's got some slight sweetness to it – but they're also long, and with plenty of room for solos. Titles include "Shunga", "Sweet Mirage", "Square Knights Of The Round Table", and "Been Here & Gone". LP, Vinyl record album

The set has Greene working with Damon Smith on bass and Ra Kalam Bob Moses on drums and percussion – both musicians whose overall sense of sound matches the wideness of Burton's scope – which makes the whole thing way way different than any familiar sort of trio recording! Nearly every tune's an instrumental – with spare bass and drum backing, extra instrumental flourishes, and loads of great work by Chris on electric piano and Hammond organ! The overall feel's a bit like the work of James Taylor Quartet when James was leaving behind the 60s organ groove and going for more of a 70s funk approach – lean, mean, and almost with a soundtrack style, but a bit more programmed by Joss. A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. The package features 2CDs that bring together these singles, by groups who include Wah Heat, Dead Or Alive, Modern Eon, Nightmares On Wax, China Crisis, It's Immaterial, Faction, Freeze Frame, The Light, Builders, Box Of Toys, and Venus Adore – plus a full extra CD of Peel Session material from the early 80s by some of the biggest groups in the set! An incredibly rich collection of work from the legendary Brunswick and Dakar Records labels – and one of the first to really get at the labels' rich legacy of 7" singles that were never issued on any sort of full length albums! The Brunswick sound was a powerhouse in the late 60s and early 70s – a force that saw big records from The Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson, Artistics, and others – yet the company also recorded a heck of a lot more music too – all of which was every bit as great as the hits, from the grooves at the bottom, to the tight arrangements in the middle, and the fantastic range of vocals on the top! This series finally gets at digging into all the many artists who never issued full albums on Brunswick or Dakar Records – and this first volume features 24 tracks that include "One Two Three Hamilton Street" by The Equations, "The Sweetest Thing" by Channel 3, "Stay With Me Baby" by BW & The Next Edition, "Where Our Love Has Gone" by Ronnie LaShannon, "Soul Strut" by Floyd Smith, "Let's TCB" by Richard Parker, "Contract On Your Love" by Chuck Bernard, "Funky Fatso" by The Aqua Sonics, "Dynamite" by John Freeman, "Forever & A Day" by Wales Wallace, "Turn Me Loose" by Donnie Vann, "You're My Sweet" by The Realistics, and "Falling In Love" by The Complaments. Brazilian grooves get a real workout here – as tracks from Dom Um Romao's Lake of Perseverance album are remixed by a host of young DJs and producers! The sound of the original album is greatly expanded – as the remixers are given really free range to do their thing, cutting open the grooves of the original album, and stuffing them full of beats, keyboards, and other funky touches. There's a strong element of the London broken beat scene at play here, and titles include "Sambao" remixed by Jerome Sydenham, "Apache Groove" remixed by Nubian Mindz, "Lake Of Perseverance" remixed by King Kooba, "Sanctuary" remixed by G Force, "Sambao" remixed by Catalyst, "Groovystation" remixed by Ian O'Brien, "Blue Bossa" remixed by Sonar Circle, "Mas Que Nada" remixed by Hallucinator, "Sambao" remixed by LTJ vs Ouvo, "Afro Blue" remixed by Ras, and "Lake Of Perseverance" remixed by Opaque. Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
The Jazzman label hits a whole new level of brilliance – as they turn their funk-trained crate digging skills to the world of spiritual jazz! The collection's an amazing batch of ultra-rare tunes – tracks that take inspiration from the John Coltrane/Archie Shepp work on Impulse Records in the 60s, then run with those roots in bold new directions – soaring, spiritual aims in jazz that reach for new freedoms, but never lapse into the totally-outside modes of free jazz! Instead, there's a really great balance here between structure and struggle – as many tunes often have a good rhythmic pulse, usually modal and soulful, then let the horn solos stretch out more in their own sounds and directions. The mix is amazing, as is the selection of tunes – rare numbers pulled mostly from American independent jazz releases of the 60s and 70s – most of which are as obscure as the funky 45s we normally get from Jazzman. As with the label's US funk compilations, there's full notes on all the music – a heck of a lot of detail on these artists – and tracks on the set include "Paul's Ark" by Morris Wilson Beau Bailey Quintet, "Ayo Ayo Nene" by Mor Thiam, "Nomusa" by Ndikho Xaba & The Natives, "The Afrikan In Winter" by The Positive Force, "Neveen" by Salah Ragab, "Ja Mil" by Hastings Street Jazz Experience, "Be There" by Leon Gardner, "Psych City" by Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble, "Introduction" by James Tatum Trio Plus, and "No Jive" by Frank Derrick Total Experience. US pressing has 2 bonus tracks – "All Prasies To Allah (parts 1 & 2 edit)" by Lightmen Plus One, and "Bada Que Bash" by PE Hewitt Jazz Ensemble. CD

A great early record by Larry Harlow's famous combo – every bit the "smokin" set that the title might imply! Harlow and the group are in full force here – ripping through a set of short tracks that really groove with a darkly percussive edge – not entirely a Latin Soul style, but not far off either – and definitely showing their strong ties to the youthful scene in Spanish Harlem! There's a surprising amount of traditional instrumentation in the set – especially considering the stoned out image on the cover – but that's no problem for us, given the overall quality of the set! Tracks include "Chancletas", "Orchestra Harlow", "Mi Guaguanco", "Adios Mama", and "Rica Combinacion". CD

"The Perfect Circle" is a fantastic theme song for the group – hard, full, funky, and plenty darn righteous – a great indie group take on some of the more polished funk ensembles of the time! "Hands Of Time" has totally tight drums at the start – fuller than a drumbreak, but with the same kind of energy – and in support of the righteous vocals from the group singing together – coming on with the kind of force that might make EWF stop dead in their tracks! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Plenty of disco love here – a really heartfelt selection of rare club tunes – great little numbers that are as funky and soulful as they are obscure! These aren't the disco hits of the late 70s, but they're also not clunkers that are just rare either – and instead, they're great little tunes that hardly got discovered back in the day – but are brought together here in a wicked collection by collector Al Kent! There's a freshness to the material that takes us way past the obvious – funky basslines, snapping drums, and lots of wonderful keyboards and guitar – all wrapped up in a near-perfect way, and usually set to some smoking vocals too. Many of the cuts here are rare to even our crate-tuned ears – and titles include "Mighty Gents" by The Mighty Gents, "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang, "Oh Baby/Get On Down" by Bo Galigher & TSB, "Something About You" by Moses, "Disco Fever (part 3)" by Rhond Durand, "Disco Music" by Sil Austin, "Hustle On Down (part 3)" by Michael Legrair, "I Want To Be With You" by Gregory Andre & Two Plus Three, "How Long Is Forever" by Frank & James, "Human" by Neo Experience, "Waiting In the Wings" by Marion Javius, and "Is It Wrong" by Magnetic Force. 2CD version features a full mix of all tracks by Al Kent – plus an unmixed CD with 15 individual tracks. Atco/Esoteric (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
If this is the army, sign us up – because these guys make the Kiss Army look like a bunch of wussies! Ginger Baker's at it again in post-Cream years – rocking harder than on some of his own funky albums, but also keeping a jazzy edge that makes for some pretty nice tracks on the self-titled Baker Gurvitz Army album – which has Ginger joining up with Adrian Gurvitz on guitar and vocals, and Paul Gurvitz on bass and more vocals too. The album's got a strong power trio vibe – augmented by some nice keyboard touches around the edges – really making things sparkle nicely on most tracks. One of the best of these is the moodily grooving "Inside Of Me", which steps along with a slinky style that we really dig. Other tracks have a more full on feel, and vocals, of course, but there's still some nice mellow moments in the set – and titles include "Mad Jack", "4 Phil", "Since Beginning", and "Memory Lane". On Elysian Encounter, The Baker Gurvitz Army maybe sounds better than on their debut – partly because Ginger Baker and the Gurvitz brothers have really found their groove – but also because there's some great keyboard work on the set from Peter Lemer, who you might know from earlier jazz work too! Ginger's really wailing on drums and percussion – in a way that's somewhat different than both Cream, and his own records too – and those searing guitar lines from Adrian Gurvitz really help give the whole album a great sense of focus and power! Titles include "People", "The Key", "The Gambler", "The Dreamer", "The Hustler", and "The Artist". Hearts On Fire is the last album in the legendary run of records from Ginger Baker and the brothers Adrian and Paul Gurvitz – a heck of a power trio, but one that comes across in a very different way than Baker's famous work in Cream! If anything, Ginger's drums have more of a funk current than before – a really powerful driving force at the bottom, while Adrian riffs around all over the top and edges of the tunes with these well-crafted guitar lines that don't even need a solo to find their voice – wickedly emphasizing the vocals on tunes that include "Flying In & Out Of Stardom", "Neon Lights", "Mystery", "Thirsty For The Blues", "My Mind Is Healing", and "Smiling". CD features all albums in their original artwork, a small fold-out poster, and bonus tracks that include "Memory Lane (live)", "People (live)", "Freedom (live)", and "Wotever It Is (live)". CD

The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. An amazing recording finally sees the light of day – a beautiful set of duets between Fred Anderson on tenor and Steve McCall on percussion – both very important players of the second wave of AACM musicians in the 70s, even though both artists never fully got their due! The material was recorded in 1980, not too long before we lost McCall – and the interplay is wonderful, and really represents a shift in the energy of the AACM scene – maybe some influence from the loft jazz world of mid 70s New York, which in turn drew inspiration from late 60s Chicago – but also delivered with a sense of soul that marks Anderson as part of a key lineage of Chicago tenorists that includes Clifford Jordan, Johnny Griffin, and John Gilmore! McCall is great too – a sensitive soul, but a strong force throughout – as the duo improvise on two long tracks, "Within" and "Wandering". CD

Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! A righteous early 70s set from Ray Charles – and a record with a much deeper vibe than you might guess from the image of Ray and some kids on the cover! Arrangements were handled by Quincy Jones, Sid Feller, and Mike Post – and the record is kind of a 70s take on the fuller modes that Charles explored for ABC during the 60s – moved into more contemporary territory with some sweet Fender Rhodes, full strings, and a funky undercurrent in some of the rhythms – never too forced or over the top, but in ways that makes some of the tunes sly steppers that work great with Charles' aging vocals. Titles include "Abraham Martin & John", "Heaven Help Us All", "There'll Be No Peace Without All Men As One", "Hey Mister", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong", and "What Have They Done To My Song Ma". Stanley CowellNew World ... LP
Galaxy, 1978. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A surprisingly righteous little album from Stanley Cowell – a set cut after his more famous music for the Strata East label, but one that still hangs onto a similar vibe! The style's a bit tighter than before, but still filled with soul and spirit – thanks to a lineup that includes Julian Priester on trombone, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, and Pat Patrick on reeds – making a key appearance here away from the Sun Ra Arkestra! Cowell plays both piano and keyboards, and the record has a bit of strings, and a bit of vocals – but all used tastefully, in ways that further enforce the depth of the tunes. Tracks include "El Space-O", "Ask Him", "Island Of Haitoo", and "I'm Tryin To Find A Way". LP, Vinyl record album

EdiigwuMusic Of The Idoma Of Nigeria – Ediigwu Sings The Ancient Songs Of Oturkpo, Nigeria ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
One of the darkest field recordings on the Folkways label – a set of Ichicha music – music traditionally performed during the wake of a funeral – actually recorded during a funeral! Some of the songs are just Ediigwu, but the others are call and response with a full chorus and the ajigo, or kettle drum and the okanga, a two membrane drum, carried slung over a shoulder – and given the setting of the record, there's a very strong undercurrent of sadness in most of the music – not faked or forced in the studio, but genuinely felt emotion at the event. Tracks include "Alekwu Chants", "Onugbu & Oko", "Journey To Igbira", and more. CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Lion Kingdom/Hot Milk (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 13.99
Great lost work from the UK scene of the early 80s – self-produced, self-released work from I Benjahman – an artist who was strongly inspired by the more righteous side of the Kingston scene of the decade before! Most of these tracks have a groove that's mighty lean, and beautifully fluid – dubby rhythms with all these other elements floating around in the mix, almost like water – piano, guitar, and other sounds that bubble and ebb along with Benjahman's conscious lyrics – music with the sort of message you might expect from the image on the cover. Titles on the original album include "Give Love A Try", "Sweet Reggae Music", "Family Affair", "Jah World Will Keep On Turning", "Jah Nation", "Natural Forces", and "She Got To Know". 2CD set also features 16 bonus tracks – including single cuts "Family Affair (12" version)", "Give Love A Try (12" version)", "Hold Me Tight", and "Family Affair (dub plate voc)" – and 12 more dubs of the album tracks – which, given how dubby the album already is, makes for some pretty dubby music! Work/Sony (UK), 1996. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 37.99
A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Titles include "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl", "Everyday", "Alright", "High Times", "Travelling Without Moving", "Spend A Lifetime", "Use The Force", and "Didjital Vibrations". Athens Of The North (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $12.99
LaRombe Baker hails from Philly, but he's best known for his late 70s work on the LA scene – a place where he was continually bubbling under, but never fully got the chance he deserved! Hearing this set, it's clear that LaRombe was one of the great almost-rans of his generation – an artist with the chops to record great soul material without the supervision of any major label or big producer – yet one without the savvy to get such music into the hands of a force that would give it the place it deserved! According to the notes, Baker came to close to working with Motown, Solar, and Curtom – but maybe the fact that those labels passed on tracks as great as these is what makes them so special – a beautifully balanced album of boogie numbers and mellow soul tracks – well-written, beautifully arranged, and topped with great vocals from the man himself. The set's one to put next to your gems from Leon Ware and Ronnie McNeir from back in the day – and titles include "It's All In Your Mind", "Sweet Sensation", "Spread My Wings", "In The Light", "U R The 1", "The Ultimate", and an alternate take of his one issued single "You're The Best". ✨✧ Mario LunaBeyond Heaven – Chicago House Party Flyers Vol 2 – From 1981 to 1992 ... Book
Almighty & Insane Books, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
The secret history of Chicago house music – a side of the scene that's even more obscure than its many rare records or long-departed clubs! The book is a fantastic follow up to the first volume – and like that one, features rare flyers, posters, and ads for some of the underground Chicago house music events and venues – some of them legitimate entertainment venues, but others more obscure hole-in-the-wall places – including some churches that were surprising hosts to house music events back in the day! The book has no text, but features full color reproductions of dozens of flyers and posters – most of them very detailed and vibrant, with loads of information on obscure artists, DJs, and other forces helping to make house music happen – often emblazoned with addresses that will come as a real surprise if you only know the Chicago of the 21st Century! A beautiful book – and one that makes us proud to call Chicago our home. Book

No gravity here – in fact, quite the reverse, as gravity almost seems suspended in the way these guys work together with a beautifully fluid vibe! The tenor of Donny McCaslin's very firmly in the lead on the set – sometimes amidst spare instrumentation, often standing as the prow of the quartet's rhythmic progression – sounds that stem from the keyboards of Jason Linder, bass of Tim Lefebvre, and drums of Mark Guiliana. Things are sometimes spacey, sometimes a bit more forceful – and always a clear expression of McCaslin's unique musical vision. Victor (Japan), 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Beautifully burning work from Japanese saxophonist Kohsuke Mine – a player who cut some fantastic albums in the 70s, even though he never fully got his due on this side of the Pacific! The vibe here is very much in a post-Coltrane spiritual mode – with the leader blowing both tenor and soprano sax, and really working some amazing long, visionary lines on his instruments – sometimes really soaring off with Impulse Records-like energy, other times hitting more modal modes that remind us that Mine was one of the most powerful, soulful forces in the Japanese jazz scene at the time. The rest of the lineup is excellent too – and the album features additional tenor from Hideo Miyata, plus piano from Fumio Itabashi, bass from Hideaki Mochizuki, and drums from Hiroshi Murakami. Titles include "Thirsty", "Self Contradiction", "Spin Drift", "Daguri", and "Expectation". CD

Drummer Sunny Murray really hit some wonderfully subtle, sensitive moments in the later years of his career – as you'll definitely hear here, working in a trio with Robert Andreano on guitar and Bob Dickie on bass! Both of the string players use their instruments in ways that are often textural – with Andreano creating slower waves of sound on his electrified instrument, and Dickie moving with careful energy alongside – which has Murray often using the drum kit in more open, spacious ways that resonate well with the other two musicians. A few tracks get freer jazz force, and remind us of Sunny's bold, righteous power in such a setting – and titles include "Good Things", "Swell", "Homework", "Memorial Day", and "Why You Need A Lawyer When Your Pants Are On Fire". A really fantastic full length set from Bobby Oroza – a moody take on blue-eyed soul, with a vibe that's completely its own! Oroza has some fantastic help here – production and music by Cold Diamond & Mink, the combo who've given such a fantastic sound to Timmion Records soul singles over the years! Bobby's got a sweet soul style that's already great – but it really takes off here in the company of the Finnish musicians – who also recorded the whole set with Bobby at the Timmion studios, which makes the whole thing sort of a joint project between the two creative forces! The lean, sinister quality we always love in Cold Diamond & Mink's music really helps shape the sound of the vocals – and Bobby himself also plays guitar and organ on the record. Spectrum/Universal (UK), 1990s. New Copy 5CD ... $18.99
A massive legacy in soul music – served up here in one great little set – with the first five albums by Soul II Soul, all presented in tiny little LP-styled sleeves! It's hard to deny the power of the group at the time – and even all these many years later, we're amazed at how well these albums hold up – as the first two here had such a huge influence on American soul music, you might expect the sound to be old hat by now! Yet Jazzie B was still one of the first guys to successfully mix hip hop rhythms and modern soul production – at a level that was far less forced than American experiments of the mid 80s – and which found a way to carry all the hip underground love of soul and jazz from the British scene over to the American mainstream. Even the later albums here are still head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – and beyond the classics, the whole package here is ripe for rediscovery! CD

Tiny TimGod Bless Tiny Tim (expanded mono edition) ... CD
Reprise/Now Sounds (UK), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the weirdest albums of the 60s, and a surprisingly big hit for the legendary Tiny Tim – a character then know to TV audiences for his appearances on Laugh-In and other shows – but an artist who sounds surprisingly culture-counter all these years later! The album's got some wonderfully odd elements in the production and arrangements – the former by Richard Perry, the latter by Artie Butler – all in that hip faux-nostalgia style that was huge in the Warner/Reprise universe of the time. And although Tim's certainly weirder and maybe goofier than Harper's Bizarre, Van Dyke Parks, and Randy Newman – you can definitely hear a through line to that scene in this album – as well as links to other odd 60s moments by folks like Brute Force or John Simon. Tunes are both old and new, and all are completely remade by Tiny Time – songs that include the hit "Tip Toe Thru The Tulips", plus a fantastic cover of the Biff Rose tune "Fill Your Heart", and "The Coming Home Party", "The Other Side", "Daddy Daddy What Is Heaven Like", "Welcome To My Dream", "The Viper", and "On The Old Front Porch". This fab CD features the rare mono version – only a promo issue at the time – plus lots of mono bonus tracks that include "Little Girl", "April Showers", "Bring Back Those Rockabye Baby Days", "Hello Hello", and a number of Artie Butler instrumental tracks too! TribeHometown Detroit Sessions 1990 to 2014 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1990/1995/2014. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
A return to greatness for the legendary Tribe Records scene in Detroit – an underground movement that gave us some spiritual jazz classics in the 70s – then kept on making wonderful music at an even more underground level as the years went on! This set is a collection of work from three rare recordings issued during that time – all on CD only, and representing a maybe even more obscure side of this legacy than the Tribe albums of the 70s! First up is trombonist Phil Ranelin – heading up a group that includes Wendell Harrison on tenor and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – two key Tribe partners from the early years – really stretching out on the titles "He The One We All Knew" and "Freddie's Groove", both recorded in 1990. Next is material from a 1995 performance led by pianist Harold McKinney – a set that's got an incredible depth of imagination and soul, almost as much as Harold McKinney's work of years back! The group is a wonderfully hip one – with former Tribe artists Wendell Harrison on tenor and clarinet and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – plus additional players who include Kiane Zawadi on trombone, Reggie Workman on bass, Francisco Mora on percussion, and Jimmy Owens on trumpet. There's a bit of vocals, but never that much – and most tracks are long and open – freely exploratory, but never too far out or avant-styled – just soulful and spiritual, in the true Tribe Records tradition! Titles include "Wide & Blue", "The Slave Ship Enterprise", "Juba", "Libra Ahora", and "Conjure Man". Last is a set of tracks recorded in 2014 by keyboardist Pamela Wise – a record that really carries forward the Tribe Records spirit from the 70s! The overall approach is a bit more contemporary, but the set's still got all the best feel of a classic indie album from the underground – played and penned by Wise in close collaboration with reedman Wendell Harrison, a frequent partner of Pamela's on a variety of projects, and one of the driving forces of Tribe back in the day! Wise plays both acoustic and electric keyboards, and sometimes sings just slightly – although most of the album is instrumental – and in addition to Harrison's work on tenor and bass clarinet, the album features trumpet, guitar, and lots of percussion. Titles include "Ode To Black Mothers", "Hometown", and "Marcus Garvey". LP, Vinyl record album

Mindblowing trio work from Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita – in a group that's equally noteworthy for its incredible reed performances from the mighty Akira Sakata! The pairing of Sakata and Yamashita was one of the greatest things in Japanese jazz in the 70s, and certainly one of that scene's strongest avant impulses – and the trio's completed by the thoughtfully spacious drum work of Takeo Moriyama, who really knows how to read the room, then run when the time is right. Sakata manages to get some of the most searing sounds from the clarinet we've ever heard, and a hell of a lot of force from the alto too – and the set features a long reading of the trio's classic "Mina's Second Theme" – plus the tune "Clay", dedicated to Muhammad Ali. Joyce Elaine Yuille with Timo LassyWelcome To My World ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2015. New Copy ... $16.99
A hell of a singer, working here with some wonderful grooves from Timo Lassy – an artist we've really loved for his own jazzy projects in the past! Joyce Elaine Yuille has this style that's very classic, and very groovy – jazz-based, with a nice rasp in her voice that really brings out some of the more soulful qualities in the music – and able to write her own lyrics, too – which makes for a wonderful record that's full of fresh sounds at every turn! Lassy's music is wonderful too – tightly snapping on the rhythms, but never forced – and with a jazz current that's a nice change from other contemporary soul production, which might have been added to the record with a bigger label. But clearly, the real star of the show is Joyce – a talent that will definitely be huge in years to come – a rock-solid singer and songwriter who may well turn out to be the female equivalent of Gregory Porter. Titles include "Come With Me", "Tryin Times", "Chaos", "It's Madness", "Make Right", "Welcome To My World", "Follow The Sun", and "Late I Rise". CD

The brilliant full exposure of the voice that was always buried in the larger sounds of Pink Floyd – a definite madcap romp from the amazing Syd Barrett – and a record that still sounds as captivatingly chilling all these many decades later! There's a stripping-down here that's really tremendous – no need for all the overblown, long-winded excursions of other forces in the psych generation – as Syd takes the whole thing down to its core, and carries it off with a charm that's almost folksy – yet which, like David Bowie at about this point in his career, manages to manipulate and dismiss the folk generation as much as it does the psych one too! David Gilmour and Roger Waters are on hand to help a bit with production – and titles include "Octopus", "Golden Hair", "Long Gone", "She Took A Long Cool Look", "Late Night", "If It's In You", "Love You", and "Terrapin". Impulse/MCA, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer stuff by Art Blakey – one of his few non-Blue Note sessions from the time, and a hard-wailing set that features the Jazz Messengers as a sextet! The format is one that flourished briefly in these early 60s years – and in this case, the already great lineup of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano is joined by Curtis Fuller on trombone – a frontline that makes for some really amazing music, and which starts to bring in a lyrical energy to the group that's really amazing! The force of Fuller on the ensemble cannot be denied – and the group shift from straight hardbop with a soulful bent into an even more inspired mode – as you'll hear on the album's classic reading of Fuller's "Ala Mode" – nestled in alongside Jazz Messenger takes on standards like "Invitation", "I Hear A Rhapsody", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Wonderfully sensitive work from pianist Mulgrew Miller – an album that's hardly "work" at all, and which seems to have the magical music flowing from his hands with ease! There's a really organic feel to the set – that never-forced approach to piano that made Miller a real standout when he first emerged in the 80s – a new chapter of jazz piano expression, rich with soul from past legacies, but also stating its own identity with a quiet sort of power. Riverside, 1958. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal set from Max Roach – the start of his more righteous stretch in jazz, as you might guess from the title of the album! At some level, the record's got a bit of the feel of the post-Clifford Brown Mercury years from Roach – but at another, it's stretching out towards the directions Max would explore fully on the Candid, Impulse, and Fantasy labels in the 60s – an approach to hardbop that often really pushes its limits – not content to simply set up solos for the players, and instead moving with a much more forceful energy overall! Group members include Booker Little on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, Ray Draper on tuba, and Art Davis on bass – and the lack of a piano makes for a very exciting sound! The album's got 2 great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha Cha" and "Deeds Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", and the groundbreaking "Conversation" – a very cool solo by Roach on the drums! Soundway (UK), Early 70s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Essential work from the African scene of the 70s – a collection of tracks that goes way beyond the more familiar grooves of Fela Kuti and Manu Dibango! The set may well be the deepest so far we've heard from the always-amazing Soundway Records – a package that digs into a wealth of under-heard music from early 70s Nigeria, all of it beyond simple stylistic definitions and overplayed world music cliches! Many of the grooves here are wonderfully unique – odd fusions of styles that include highlife, jazz, soul, Afrobeat, and other regional influences – sifted and shaken together, and spilled out in the studio with a really fresh sort of feel. Rhythms are at the core of most numbers here, but even those are often unfamiliar – skittish, soulful, and often somewhat playful – and the other instrumentation on the tracks is great too, and often resonates with some of the odd sounds and tunings we love in work on the Ethiopiques series. 2CD set features 26 tracks that include "Okwuke Na Nchekwube" by Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National, "Nekwaha Semi Colon" by The Semi Colon, "Osalobua Rekpama" by Sir Victor Owaifo & His Melody Maestros, "Onwu Ama Dike" by St Augustine & His Rovers Dance Band, "Feso Jaiye" by The Sahara All Stars Of Jos, "To Whom It May Concern" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Akula Owu Onyeara" by The Funkees, "Koma Mosi" by The Harbours Band, "Belema" by Opotopo, "Asiko Mi Ni" by Nigerian Police Force Band, "Alabeke" by Dan Satch & His Atomic 8 Dance Band, "Blak Sound" by Leo Fadaka & The Heroes, "Arraino" by Popular Cooper & His All Beats Band, "Ugali" by Tony Benson Sextet, "Akpaisong" by Etubom Rex Williams & His Nigerian Allstars, "Eguae Oba" by Osayomore Joseph & The Creative 7, "Torri Wowo" by Godwin Ezike & The Ambassadors, "Buroda Mase" by Bola Johnson & His Easy Life Top Beats, "I Want A Break Thru" by The Hykkers, and "Eguae Oba" by Osayomore Joseph & The Creative 7. Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". The third album from Eric B & Rakim – absolute classic MC/DJ duo hip hop and maybe their most solid from beginning end, as impossible as that should've been after high bars they set with Paid In Full & Follow The Leader! By this point, Rakim was firmly established as one of hip hop's greatest rhymers, but he still steps to a higher level here, with a more forceful approach on some grittier material and his trademark cool and measured flow on others. "Let The Rhythm Hit Em" and "In The Ghetto" strong enough to call this a classic on their majesty alone, but this one's got one should-be standout track after another including "Mahogany", "No Omega", "Keep Em Eager To Listen", "Step Back", "Run For Cover" and more. ✨✧ George Mraz & Roland HannaPorgy & Bess ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare Japanese-only album – one that presents familiar songs from Porgy & Bess, but delivered in a completely sublime setting – just the bass of George Mraz and the piano of Roland Hanna – opening up with a sense of flow that really transforms each tune into a very special creative moment! Mraz is at his best here – with that round yet sharp tone that makes some of his 70s performances so wonderful – and Hanna complements his playing beautifully with his own balance of force and lyricism – maybe more sometimes on the left hand than usual, but also never slavishly tied to rhythm – just carrying a bit more of the sound without the drums. Titles include "I Love You Porgy", "Summertime", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "Strawberry Woman", and "Jasbo Brown Blues" – plus two versions of "Oh Bess Where's My Bess", each done by Mraz and Hanna as solo pieces. ✨✧ VariousIf Music Presents You Need This – World Jazz Grooves – Compiled By Jean Claude & Victor Kiswell ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not a set of world music-inflected jazz – although there is a bit of that – and instead, a wonderful collection of spiritual numbers from around the world – most recorded in the 70s, at a time when barriers were really breaking down in jazz music! All tracks here are nice and long, and most are groovers – but not in the typical funky jazz way – as the album is mostly earthy and organic, and mostly acoustic too – with musicians that work together wonderfully in ensemble format, and often find ways to incorporate non-traditional instruments into a jazz-based perspective! Titles include "Souffle (part 2)" by Armand Lemal, "Ismaa" by The Jazz Committee For Latin American Affairs, "Timbuktu" by Theo Loevendie Consort, "Fonetik A Velo" by Kafe, "Martinica" by Michel Sardaby, "Illustration" by Billy Bang's Survival Ensemble, "Pumu 1" by Masabumi Kikuchi, and "Itwenty Five" by Joe Malinga & The Southern African Force. ✨✧ VariousWe Out Here ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
London is exploding again with fantastic music – and this time around, it's the city's jazz underground that comes forward to remind us what a unique musical crossroads the city can be! The work here represents an incredible new scene that's pushing boundaries all over again – not the avant jazz of London improvisers, nor the electric sounds of the broken beat world, or retro funk of another scene – but fantastic acoustic jazz that at one level brings back deeper spiritual sounds from generations back, but at another flings forward its sounds with inspiration that will be setting the standard for years to come. We've only had a few of these artists on record before, and together they work beautifully as a strong new proclamation of talent – on titles that include "Once" by Nubya Garcia, "Inside The Acorn" by Maisha, "Pure Shade" by Ezra Collective, "The Balance" by Moses Boyd, "Brockley" by Theon Cross, "Walls" by Triforce, "Black Skin Black Masks" by Shabaka Hutchings, "Go See" by Joe Armon Jones, and "Abusey Junction" by Kokoroko. ✨✧ Art HiraharaCentral Line ... CD
Posi tone, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Art Hirahara is a beautifully fluid pianist – one who really won us over with his last album on Posi-tone, and who seems to soar even more here – working in a fantastic trio that includes Linda Oh on bass and Rudy Royston on drums – plus some occasional tenor from Donny McCaslin! Oh and Royston have this round presence that really resonates strongly with Art's piano – creating this wave of soulful energy from the ground up, even on the mellower moments – with a tonal depth that's sophisticated, yet never forced at all. When McCaslin comes into the mix, his sound is a bit more separate from the three – yet in a way that only underscores their cohesion and beautiful sensitivity together. Titles include "Little Giant", "Sensitive Animal", "Central Line", "Kuroda Bushi", "Astray", and a version of the Chico Buarque tune "As Minhas Meninas". CD

✨✧ Leonard KingContinunationalizing ... CD
Uuquipleu, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent ensemble from the contemporary Detroit scene – one whose work evokes the modes of the city's older groups on Tribe Records and Strata – with a vibe that's wonderfully spiritual and righteous! The driving force of the group is drummer Leonard King – who you might know from his work with Lyman Woodard and other older Motor City jazz and soul groups – but there's a very unified spirit from the younger horn section in the lineup, who are offset by lighter electric touches on guitar and keyboards. There's added percussion at the core – which further deepens the sound of the record – and King sings a bit on on the record, often with a style that's more powerful than any of his other records. The spirit of underground jazz is alive and well on this set – and titles include "Song For Christine", "Bananas & Mushroom Clouds", "Dedicacion", "Tinges", "Nonchalant", "Faces In Reflection", and "Resume Said Yes To The Money". ✨✧ Ken Vandermark/Pandelis KarayorgisForeground Music ... CD
Okka Disk, 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most beautiful, introspective work we've heard in years from Ken Vandermark – spare duets with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis – done in a mode that almost recalls the best experiments of Lee Konitz or Jimmy Giuffre from many years back! The sound is spare, but never too sleepy or lacking for inspiration – as Vandermark really opens up in this setting, matching the angular piano work of Karayorgis with some beautifully thoughtful lines on a variety of saxophones and clarinet. Some tunes have a slow-building approach that hangs the sound in the air almost magically – while others come on with a full attack, then slow things down for a bit of contemplation. As always with Vandermark, the influences of the music are given full credit throughout – and titles include "JCT", "United Forces Of One", "Lifgatowy", "Betwixt", "Title Without Year", and "Absolute Camel". ✨✧ Alex Attias Presents MustangBack Home ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... $2.99
Sublime future jazz from Alex Attias – one of the key forces in the cosmic London scene of the 21st Century, stepping out here in a long-awaited full-length set that served up the full complement of his talents! As you'd expect from Alex, there's plenty of snapping beats and spacey keys on the set – an extrapolation of 70s funky jazz, into the spacier and headier realm that's been explored by Attias and the best of his contemporaries on recent singles. But over and above the high quality usual, there's also a farther-reaching set of rhythms and modes of expression going on here – as Alex uses the freedom of the full-length to work in modes that are sometimes subtler, sometimes more experimental – occasionally just grooving instrumentally, but also getting plenty of help from guest stars that include Vanessa Freeman, Jessica Lauren, Bembe Segue, Colonel Red, and Mark De Clive-Lowe. Tracks include "Help Me", "Closer To Me", "Future Jazz", "In The Jungle", "Back Home", "Everchanging Times", "Darker Side Of Light", "Angels", "Confusion", and "Transformation". CD

✨✧ Jimmy Briscoe & The Little BeaversMy Ebony Princess ... CD
Pi Kappa/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99
An east coast harmony classic from Jimmy Briscoe & The Little Beavers – a sweetly-voiced young soul group with a really positive sound! Jimmy and the group have a groove that's more mature than some of the other young soul acts to emerge in the wake of the Jackson Five – and the tracks on the set are a great balance of gentle ballads and more forceful numbers, done in modes that share a lot with some of the best New Jersey groups of the time, particularly those on the All-Platinum label. Production is full and rich – never too much so overpower the vocals, but with some wonderfully chosen instrumental touches from maestro Paul Kyser – but it's Jimmy's heartbreaking vocals that really drive the set. Titles include "My Ebony Princess", "I Only Feel This Way When I'm With You", "Theme From Forever", "Where Were You", "Pack Up", "My Fallen Angel", "Together", and "Country to the City". CD

✨✧ Clifford Brown & Max RoachBrown & Roach Incorporated ... CD
EmArcy, 1955. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Quite possibly THE key example of the magic of Clifford Brown and Max Roach on record – a brilliant studio session that really has the group "incorporating" their sound – forging a bold musical statement that would forever leave its imprint on jazz for years to come! The format here shows Brown and Roach as a key force in 50s hardbop – extending Max's bop idiom of years back, and using Clifford's more lyrical approach to solo work to expand the tone, color, and spirit of their music – linking styles and worlds wonderfully, and forging a sound that's tight, yet also beautifully spontaneous and personal. The rest of the group includes Harold Land on tenor, Richie Powell on piano, and George Morrow on bass – and titles include "Sweet Clifford", "Ghost Of A Chance", "Stompin At The Savoy", "I'll String Along With You", "Mildama", "Darn That Dream", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You". Mosaic/Blue Note, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... $44.99
Some of the best work ever recorded by bassist Paul Chambers – one of the greatest bass players in jazz! This excellent 3CD box set features the bulk of albums that Paul Chambers recorded for Blue Note as a leader, plus an earlier gem recorded for the Imperial label, and another session for the Transition label. Together, the records give an incredible picture of Chambers' work – showing why most jazz players of the 50s regarded him as one of the most important forces on his instrument, and why Chambers had some unique talents that made him one of the few bassists to regularly record albums as a leader. Players on the albums include John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Clifford Jordan, Pepper Adams, and Curtis Fuller – and the albums include Chamber's Music, Whims Of Chambers, Paul Chambers Quintet, Bass On Top, and Transition Session. 32 tracks in all! Alice ColtraneSpiritual Eternal – The Complete Warner Brothers Recordings (Eternity/Radha Krsna Nama Sankirtana/Transcendence) ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 26.98
Three great albums from Alice Coltrane – all late 70s albums for Warner Brothers that really show her taking off as both a solo performer and a spiritual force! First up is Eternity – seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". Radha Krsna Nama Saknirtana is pure spiritual loveliness from Alice, and a record that features a lot of additional playing by Indian musicians! Clearly, the Hari Krishnas have gotten to the lady here – as you can tell by the orange robe she's wearing on the cover, and the blank stare in her eyes – but that doesn't stop the album from being a nice one, filled with the soaring spiritualism of her best 70s work, and infused with a cross-cultural approach to jazz that makes for a wonderfully expansive sound. Tracks include "Om Namah Sivaya", "Hare Krishna", and "Govinda Jai Jai". Transcendence is a beautiful record from Alice Coltrane – a swirling mix of spiritual jazz and themes from Indian music! Alice plays organ, Fender Rhodes, and harp – building the sound as the album progresses, from simple airy strings to an earthier groove that features vocal refrains in unison with the keyboards, chanting away, over and over, stretching to the heavens in a cosmic groove! The record features a lot of variations on traditional Indian themes – including "Sivaya", "Ghana Nila", and "Bhaja Govindam" – plus the original tracks "Transcendence" and "Vrindavana Sanchara". CD

Marco Di Marco with Nathan HainesMy London Friends ... CD
Arision (UK), 2004. Used ... $8.99
An incredible meeting of minds and generations – as 70s Italian jazz legend Marco Di Marco joins forces with current underground London darling Nathan Haines! Haines' work of recent years is steeped in a soul jazz groove inspired by the European scene of the 70s – of which Marco's famous trio was a very big part – so the meeting of the two players is almost a match made in heaven. The set's a straight jazz one, but it's also handled with the love of rhythmic freedom that marks some of the best London work of the 21st century – almost a 4 Hero inspiration bubbling at the bottom, as tracks take off and glisten with a richly driving sound. Marco's piano is as wonderfully lyrical as ever – evocative, but never snoozy or too painterly to lose its swing – and Nathan Haines really shocks us with his full command of sax and flute in a jazz-based mode! The set also features some rollingly strong electric and double bass work by Andy Hamill and Robin Mullarkey, drums by Eduardo Marquez, and percussion by Pete Eckford – and titles include "Interlude At Dawn", "Brazilian Waltz", "Up West", "Repeat After Me", "Solaria", "Take Off", "Jumpy","Winding Dance", "Soft Rain, Gentle Breeze", and more. Domino, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Sublime soundtrack work from Devonte Hynes – an artist you might know under other sounds as Blood Orange, but who emerges here as a film score force to be reckoned with – creating these amazing tracks that are a balance between richness and subtle instrumentation! The film is fantastic (one of our favorites in years) – and Devonte's music is a key part of its creative success – carefully-chosen electric and acoustic elements, sometimes balanced with larger arrangements, but often done in a lean style that really fits the intimacy of the story. The string passages alone are completely captivating, and there's some haunting piano and keyboard elements that are wonderful too – on titles that include "Get Upstairs", "Slim's Horse", "What's Next", "A Couple Deer", "This Is A Safe Place", "Bed", and "Sneak Out". Leela JamesLoving You More – In The Spirit Of Etta James ... CD
Shanachie, 2012. Used ... $8.99
A set done in the spirit of Etta James, but with a vibe that's definitely Leela James all the way through! There's definitely a rasp to the album that echoes the spirit of James' generation – enforced by a crispy sound of a stylus hitting a record at the start of the CD – but the backings are definitely contemporary, and in that bouncy, bubbly style that makes Leela's vocals slide out soulfully! Leela may not sound like Etta – but honestly, the results are much better than if she was just doing some sort of Etta remake record. Titles include "It Hurts Me So Much", "I Want To Ta Ta You Baby", "At Last", "Sunday Kind Of Love", "It Hurts Me So Much", "Something's Got A Hold On Me", and "Soul Will Never Die". CD

Duke JordanFlight To Jordan ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960. Used ... $13.99
Quite possibly the greatest album ever cut by pianist Duke Jordan – a seminal force in bop, both for his writing and playing – but an artist who rarely ever got the chance to work as a leader! This session's a prime bit of lost Blue Note – with an unusual and edgey lineup that includes Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, Reggie Workman on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – all coming together under Jordan's direction. The set's got a wonderfully classic feel – a mix of hardbop with slightly more lyrical leanings, and a few darker undercurrents – heard to best effect in Jordan's writing, which reminds us of some of his work on French soundtracks from the same time. Titles include "Deacon Joe", "Si-Joya", "Flight To Jordan", and "Squawkin". CD
