Anthony BraxtonAnthony Braxton (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Fuel (Italy), 1969. Used Gatefold ... $16.99
One of Braxton's great records for BYG, and like the other one, a very cool session that has Braxton playing in a vibe that shows his AACM roots much more clearly than a lot of other sessions. He's playing here with a number of other Chicago expatriates, including Leroy Jenkins, Steve McCall, and Leo Smith – and between them, the four players handle a huge amount of string, reed, percussion, and keyboard instruments, switching off and on in a warmly experimental sound that characterizes the best work of the Chicago avant garde from the time. Tracks include "The Light On the Dalta", "Simple Like", and one of Braxton's weird symbol compositions. Ironically, this French session from the late 60's still stands as one of the best ways to witness the budding Chicago avant garde! CD

ZombiesOdessey & Oracle (expanded & remastered) ... CD
Fuel 2000, 1968. Used ... $8.99
An incredible album – one of the greatest rock albums of the 60s, and a record we'd place right up there on the shelf next to Pet Sounds or Forever Changes! The arrangements are sublime – proof that the Zombies were growing way past just a simple Brit Invasion style, into a world of complicated orchestrations, subtle songwriting, and some of the most baroquely beautiful vocals ever recorded in the service of pop music! The whole thing's amazing – the kind of essential record we never tire of – and tracks include "Changes", "Care of Cell 44", "Rose For Emily", "Hung Up On A Dream", "Friends Of Mine", and "Butcher's Tale". Expanded version features a total of 22 tracks – including Colin Blunstone gems "She Loves The Way They Love Her" and "Smokey Day", plus a number of different mixes of other tunes, and the great "Conversation Off Floral Street". ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoLive In Paris ... CD
BYG/Fuel 2000, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal work from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – recorded during their most creative period ever! The album was recorded live in October of 1969 – at a time when the group had pulled up roots and moved to France for a few years, bursting on the European scene with unique creativity that was not getting the recognition it deserved in their hometown of Chicago. The studio sets from this time are already the stuff of legend, and have thankfully made it back on reissue heavily the past few years – and this brilliant live set stands perfectly next to them – matching any of the LPs in the Great Black Music series on BYG/Actuel for sheer creative brilliance and soulful energy! Fontella Bass joins the group for a bit of vocals, and the 2CD set features 2 long tracks – "Bon Voyage" and "Oh Strange". CD

✨✧ Charles Brown & FriendsMerry Christmas Baby (Jewel) ... CD
Fuel 2000, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly cool collection of tracks that hides under the "Merry Christmas Baby" title of Charles Brown's big postwar Holiday hit – but which instead includes a fair bit of later soul, blues, and gospel numbers recorded for Jewel and Paula Records! The package mixes things up nicely – and has a deeper sense of soul than you might expect – and the CD track listing is a bit different than the original Jewel Records LP. Titles include the jazzy "Silent Night" by The Ronnie Kole Trio, the soulful "The Bells" by Bobby Powell, "Lonesome Christmas (parts 1 & 2)" by Lowell Fulsom, "White Christmas" and "Little Jesus Boy" by The Violinaires, "Christmas Blues" by Big Joe Williams, and "Merry Christmas Baby", "Please Come Home For Christmas", "Just A Blessing", and "Christmas In Heaven" by Charles Brown. Duke EllingtonFestival Session ... LP
Columbia, 1959. Very Good ... $7.99
Duke Ellington in fine fine form – working here in a selection of tunes played at jazz festivals in 1959 – a very good year for the Ellington Orchestra! The styles here are a mix of older Duke modes and some of the more sophisticated modernism of his late 50s years – and performances are often long and open-ended, with just the sort of spontaneous energy the Ellington organization offered to live crowds of the time. Titles include the extended "Idiom 59", plus "Launching Pad", "Perdido", "Duel Fuel", "Copout Extension", and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". LP, Vinyl record album

Executive SuiteExecutive Suite 1 ... LP
Polydor, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A gem of a full-length set from Executive Suite – a Philly quartet who are probably best known for their singles in the 70s, but who really find a great way to open up here in the course of an expanded album! Some of the tracks are nice and long – done in a two-part style that really brings up some of the excellent Sigma Sound backing the group get for their vocals arranged with a nice early approach to Philly club by Patrick Adams, Bobby Martin, and the team of Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Earl Young! The sound rivals some of the more famous Philly productions on Atlantic Records by bigger groups of the mid 70s – and titles include "You Got It (parts 1 & 2)", "When The Fuel Runs Out (parts 1 & 2)", "You Believed In Me (parts 1 & 2)", "I'm A Winner Now", and "Your Love Is Paradise". Mr ChopSounds From The Cave ... LP
Jazz & Milk (Germany), 2008. Near Mint- ... $14.99
No caveman sounds here, as the grooves are all plenty contemporary – yet also filled with plenty of funky touches from the 70s! The album's got a similar feel to the breaks album on Jazz & Milk – loads of acoustic elements patched together with a solid, soulful feel – a space somewhere between deep funk and hip hop production, with some occasional leftfield touches as well! The album's a short one, but it's quite solid throughout – aggressively funky without going over the top, and with a nice sense of freshness as each new tune rolls along. Titles include "Fuel", "Monolith Voodoo Vibes", "The Red Baron", "Conduit Closing", "Brainticket", "The Caveman", and "Snob". LP, Vinyl record album

Nina SimoneNina Simone At Newport ... LP
Colpix, 1960. Very Good ... $19.99
A key early moment for Nina Simone – recorded live at Newport in 1960, at a time when the festival was one of the most important showcases for groundbreaking jazz – and a perfect setting for Nina to really let loose in that righteous style that would fuel her career during the 60s! Given that Simone could sometimes be turned out of the cabaret crowd with her politics, the warm welcome she gets at Newport is very fitting support – and you can really hear it in the ay she approaches the material! The set's a hip batch of tunes that includes a few standards like "Trouble In Mind" and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", all done with the righteous Simone flair – plus other lesser-known tracks like "Flo Me La" and "Nina's Blues", opened up in the setting with some nice small combo backing! Ace (UK), 1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
That's Tim Peaks, not Twin Peaks – although the cover image might make you think otherwise – and the set's a great entry into the long-running set of imagined "diner" jukeboxes from the team of Tim Burgess and Bob Stanley! Like other Ace compilations from the St Etienne team, this one has a completely unique sort of vibe – not as much the mix of older soul, rock, and vocal gems of the previous entries – and instead this beautifully moody mix of British music from the post-punk years and beyond – tunes that often move slowly, darkly, and with this stripped-down style that really creates a mood that's all its own! This is definitely one of those "must be heard to be appreciated" collections – and, like other Burgess/Stanley efforts, it's a great reminder of the sort of special mix of music that keeps the compilation format so strong in our hearts (and on our turntables!) Titles include "Choci Loni" by Young Marble Giants, "Yanks" by The Gist, "Sky Buriel" by Dean McPhee, "Sheila She Beats In My Heart" by The Fates, "Slow Motion" by Jane Weaver, "Betty's Lament" by Isan, "Hunros" by Gwenno, "House With A Hundred Rooms" by The Chills, "Lips That Would Kiss" by Durutti Column, "I Love You" by Royal Family & The Poor, "Dog" by El Perro Del Mar, "Blue Dress" by Birdie, "Flowers" by Galaxie 500, "Different Now" by Chastity Belt, "Fuel" by Echo & The Bunnymen, and "Fairy Tales (demo)" by Stockholm Monsters. Turns out, folks were going to the moon long before Neil Armstrong took his giant step for mankind – spinning out into space with rare singles like these – all great moon-themed numbers that rocket into space with solid fuel of their own! BBE (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $24.99 34.99
A fantastic collection of Ethiopian funk – rare singles from the late 60s and early 70s – all brought together as an amazing illustration of a time when the scene was really on fire! The music here has this incredible resonance between ancient and modern – local and global – as older instrumental modes and singing styles get inflected with drums, basslines, and horn parts that are strongly influenced by American funk and soul – all at a level that makes for one of the most mindblowing mixes of music you'll ever hear! The "stompers" in the title is very well-chosen – as many of these grooves are maybe even more floor-shaking than conventional funk – with a different rhythmic structure than American styles, but an end result that's even more powerful overall. Titles include "Ewnetegna Feker" by Hirut Bekele, "Endiet Zengeshiw" by Selomon Shibeshi, "Alkedashim" by Birkineh Wurga, "Hasabe" by Teshome Meteku, "Mela Mela" by Seifu Hohannes, "Sigibgib Joroye" by Tilahun Gessesse, "Fikrishin Eshaleyu" by Getatchew Kassa, "Alagegnhwatem" by Muluken Melesse, "Ene Yewodedquat" by Tamrat Molla, "Felagote" by Bezunesh Bekele & Bodyguard Band, "Temeles" by Hirut Bekele & Alemayehu Eshete, and "Teleyeshign" by Merawi Yohannis. One of Larry Coryell's greatest albums ever! Barefoot Boy is a much more expansive session than some of Coryell's others, fueled in part by the spiritual intensity of the Impulse Records generation. It's got a momentum that's pretty darn exciting throughout – but the compositions are nice and long, which gives the players plenty of space to explore. Personnel includes Steve Marcus on tenor and soprano sax, Mike Mandel on piano, Roy Haynes on drums, and Larry Killian on congas – working with Coryell on long trippy tracks that remind us a bit of 60s work by Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd, and Gabor Szabo. Love & KissesLove & Kisses ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... $1.99
One of many projects headed up by Alec Costandinos – a briefly successful producer/arranger during the late 70s, with a real penchant for overly complicated disco! Given the huge amount of instruments in this project (strings, brass, percussion, guitar, and lots more), Costandinos must have blown all of the cocaine-fueled budget amassed by Casablanca at the time – but who was bothering to keep tabs, as everyone was probably too busy watching the sexy lady on the cover getting her shirt ripped off! Fortunately, the great Alan Hawkshaw (of The Mohawks and Serge Gainsbourg fame) is on keyboards, and his work on the keys provides a few bright moments amidst all the fluff. Two long tracks – each a side apiece – "I've Found Love" and "Accidental Lover". A great one for DJs to put on when they have to skip out, use the toilet, get a coffee, do their laundry, balance the checkbook, go home and make the bed, etc. . . LP, Vinyl record album

A mighty collaboration between Stanley Clarke & George Duke – working here in a pairing that refueled both of their careers for the 80s! In previous years, both Clarke and Duke had a penchant for really stretching out in complex, experimental modes – but here, they're playing in a relatively stripped-down and focused way – hitting some of the more soul-inspired sides of fusion at the time, although still without the slick or commercial feel of the rising GRP generation. Guitars figure heavily on a number of tracks, and vocals do too – sometimes in ways that are slightly too sweet and almost cloying. A fantastic record that more than lives up to the promise of its title and cover – and a set that's gone onto legendary fame as part of the music used by director Jess Franco for his Vampyros Lesbos films! The music here comes from the German jazz scene of the early 70s – a sound library set that features the talents of guitarist Sigi Schwab, who you'll know from some very groovy records on MPS – and a host of other great projects at the time! Schwab put the music together with keyboardist Manfred Huebler, in a style that's got the same blend of funk, jazz, and psych as some of the MPS jazz albums by artists like Dave Pike or Wolfang Dauner – but which comes across here with maybe even a bit more sense of freedom, as the whole thing works to convey the vibe of some sort of drug-fueled orgy on record! Think of this as a psychedelic take on porno sounds, and you'll only get part of the picture – because the jazz chops are wonderful, as is the sense of arrangement and production. ✨✧ RunawaysRunaways ... LP
Mercury/Modern Harmonic, 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The glammy garage punk classic! Evil genius Kim Fowley + hard-rockin' underage girls + 1976 = one of the most immediately catchy, damn near illicit razor-edged trash rock albums ever! Although it was a joke to the rock literati of the time (and may still be. . .stupid snobs) this album was integral to the coming punk revolution – particularly the unpretentious Ramones brand. This Cherry Red edition has multi-fold notes on top of the original liner notes by the then 16-year-old Lisa Francher of BOMP Magazine, lyrics and vintage photos – plus those 10 innuendo-fueled gems: "Cherry Bomb", "You Drive Me Wild", "Is It Day Or Night", "Thunder", "Rock And Roll", "Lovers", "American Nights", "Blackmail", "Secrets" and "Dead End Justice". ✨✧ SonicsDon't Believe In Christmas/Santa Claus ... 7-inch
Norton, 1965. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Protopunk garage genius from The Sonics – tearing it up on a couple of raucous Christmas themed rumblers! "Don't Believe In Christmas" is a primordial, R&B fueled blast of greatness. "Santa Claus" is just as great, in which the boys antogonize Santa, telling the old man they want cars, girls and guitars, and he shoots back NOTHIN! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ EsquivelOther Worlds Other Sounds ... LP
RCA, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most memorable Esquivel albums, and perhaps the first record that really let him hit his fantastic mix of off-beat orchestrations and spacey electronicized production! The arrangements are splendid, with echoey piano lines in the front that seem to trail off into the stratosphere. Behind them, the orchestra swings in a tight rocket-fueled way, soaring and dipping to match the oddly arranged piano lines. Titles include "Playfully", "That Old Black Magic", "Speak Low", "It Had To Be You", and "Night & Day". Plus, the cover's got a groovily attired model, hanging out in a very green lunar scene! LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label Living Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some discoloration from age on the back and a small split on the top seam.)
