Kizzy CrawfordWay I Dream ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 10.98
A fantastic debut from Kizzy Crawford – a soul singer who will most likely be huge in years to come – thanks to an approach that seems to effortlessly cross borders and boundaries! Kizzy's lyrics are personal, but positive – and the music is a blend of soul instrumentation with acoustic elements – at a level that makes it clear that Crawford's not just trying to be another neo soul diva, or retro soul vocalist – but instead is really ready to address the world with a sound that's all her own! Songs are all original, and instrumentation changes up with a nice sense of variety, but without ever making us think that Kizzy can't make up her mind – on titles that include "Golden Brown", "Progression", "Dive", "Real Love", "The Way I Dream", "Waiting Game", and "Adlewyrchu Arnaf". Nathan HainesRight Now ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Damn wonderful work from Nathan Haines – and proof that the reigning prince of the London cosmic scene is still going strong! This long-awaited set is every bit as wonderful as anything we've heard from Haines before – a sublime blend of soulful rhythms, jazzy riffs, and righteous energy – put together with a sound that draws heavily from the most soulful music of the 70s – the kind of funky fusion and spiritual jazz records that we've always loved so much! Nathan's one of the few cats who can get a sound like this so right – so much so, we'd easily rank a record like this next to some of our classics on labels like Fantasy Records or Black Jazz. The album's stacked with plenty of great keyboards, wrapped around Haines' soulful saxophone lines – and about half the cuts feature vocals, by guests who include Marlena Shaw, Vanessa Freeman, Ty, and Tama Waipara. Titles include "Tell Me What You're Feeling", "Home", "Talkin Around", "Right Now", "Today", "Pick It Up", "Creation Calling", and "Gitmo Ritmo". Also features bonus tracks – "Creation Calling (summer street rmx)" and "Tell Me What You're Feeling (Domu voc mix)". CD

OmarOmar – The Anthology ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A huge career overview of the music of Omar Lyefook – one of our favorite soul singers of the past few decades – right from the moment he first wowed the world with a bedroom-produced album that rivaled the greatness of Stevie Wonder! Omar's placement on the UK scene has maybe got him less attention than he's deserved on our shores – but don't let that stop you from diving in and really digging the sublime array of sounds on the set – music that was some of the freshest, most original soul of the 90s – and which continued to move at a very high level as Omar kept creating over the decades. The 2CD package includes out of print gems from his early records, and other bits from more recent years – and a fair bit of collaborations with artists who include Carleen Anderson, Terri Walker, Stevie Wonder, Caron Wheeler, Erykah Badu, Leon Ware, and Robert Glasper. 33 tracks in all – including "Music", "Last Request", "There's Nothing Like This", "Pass It On", "Feeling You", "Kiss It Right", "The Man", "Treat You", "F*ck War Make Love", "De Ja Vu", "Insatiable", "Doobie Doobie Doo", "Gave My Heart", "Be Thankful", "This Is Not A Love Song", "Little Boy", "Tell Me", "Vicky's Tune", "Bully", "Who Chooses The Seasons", and "Last Request". SpeedometerOur Kind Of Movement ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99
Speedometer have been giving us great funky music for many many years – yet this album may well have the group hitting a whole new level in sound – able to hold on to all the gritty elements of their early days, while also expanding in ways that touch onto Afro Funk, psychedelic funk, and cinematic funky modes too! The core instrumentation is great – with a lineup that's maybe bigger than at the start, but which also adapts to some well-placed shifts in style – on tunes that are half instrumental, and half vocal – the latter of which feature contributions from Vanessa Jamie, Najwa Ezzaher Perso, and James Jr. Titles include "We Gave Up Too Soon", "Abuja Sunrise", "Kashmir", "Edge Of Fear", "Mo Crunch", "Funky Amigo", "Mind Escape", "Look No Further", and "Time To Slow It Down". ✨✧ Cookin On 3 BurnersBaked Broiled & Fried ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Baked, broiled, or fried – it's plenty groovy all the way through – thanks to the stripped-down grooving of this combo! The group are another project from the expansive talents of Lance Ferguson – best known on our shores for his work with The Bamboos, but still sounding equally great in this group! Lance plays guitar, and other core instrumentation include Hammond organ and drums – used sparely, tightly, and in some very funky ways – and occasionally augmented by guest instrumentation that includes trombone, trumpet, flute, and tenor sax. Two tracks feature vocals, but the rest are funky instrumentals – and titles include "Keb's Bucket", "Gravel Rash", "Redback", "Cane Toad", "Pie Warmer", "The Burners Jam", "Tuesday Night Sleuth", "Feel Good Inc", "Settle The Score", and "Cook It". ✨✧ Cookin On 3 BurnersSoul Messin' ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nothing messy here – as the Burners are tighter than ever, and bat this one out of the park with a massively funky groove! The core combo features organ, guitar, and drums – with occasional horns added from time to time – and most numbers here step off with a really badass instrumental groove that runs from mod 60s soul to gritty 70s funk, with a few jazzy riffs thrown into the mix from time to time, especially on the organ lines. Kylie Auldist brings in some deep soul vocals on two tracks – and Falcon Williams sings on two more – and the whole thing's got a lively, upbeat groove – and an all-classic sound that's like finding a pile of rare funky 45s stashed away in the back of a dusty old shop. Titles include "Cars", "Goose It Up", "Piranha", "Seen Through Your Disguise", "Soul Messin", "The Proving Grounds", "Hole In My Pocket", "This Girl", "Dog Wash", "Tokyo Saucer", "Push It Up", and "Four N Twenty". ✨✧ MenagerieMany Worlds ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful set of spiritual jazz from this hip Australian group – a combo who are headed up by guitarist Lance Ferguson, who you'll know from a host of great funk and soul projects over the years – but who shows a much deeper side of his talents with Menagerie! The group has a strong lineup of saxes, trumpet, piano, Fender Rhodes, vibes, and lots of percussion – with vocals on some cuts, but an overall focus on the group's instrumentation – which spins out beautifully on the long tracks on the set! At times, the groove is like the currents of spiritualism that ran through late 60s Blue Note – which is A-OK with us – and titles include "Many Worlds", "Free Thing", "Mountain Song", "Hymn Of The Turning Stone", and "Quantum Blues". The early 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D! Along with Showbiz and AG's first EP, and Lord Finesse's first couple releases, this record helped introduce the world to one of the most solid crews in hip hop, DITC – who reigned supreme for years, making top quality records one after another. The classic and oft-imitated Diamond beats laid the blueprint for so much hip hop to follow – and the titles include "Sally Got A One Track Mind," "Best Kept Secret," "I'm Outta Here," "Check One, Two", "Freestyle (Yo That's The Sh..)" and more! ✨✧ Myka 9Oeuvre EP ... LP
Dope Folks, 2000. New Copy ... $20.99
Myka 9 was one of the founding members of LA's fantastic Freestyle Fellowship back in the 90s – and this great short set focuses both on his later material, and offers up a new track as well! The bulk of the set has that intensity that Myka brought to the Fellowship – that moment when he could step into the lineup and really set things on fire with the ferocity of his rhymes – often set here to production that's spare, but very sinister – handled by Factor and Daddy Kev, with some scratches by D Styles. Titles include "Real Song", "Ultra Bap", "Breath Control", "Life Or Death", "Famous Future Time Trael", "Inner Knowing", "To The Sky", and the new track "Something Different", produced by Jade River and Deeskee. Charles PetersonCypher (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2008. New Copy ... $6.99 35.00
The cover looks more punk rock than hip hop, but the book's a really fantastic look at the Cypher – a key move in the freestyle dance world of hip hop – taken places here that are way more than early 80s images of b boys in the streets! The photography of Charles Peterson is in black and white throughout, and has an amazing eye for motion – as most of these images are action shots, with a quality that mixes great composition with an understanding of a key moment of action. Jeff Chang provides a bit of history about the Cypher at the start – and the book is hardcover, 136 pages, and filled with black and white images throughout. Book

✨✧ Freddie Gibbs & MadlibBandana ... LP
RCA, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best Madlib-produced LP since the highest peaks of the prime Stones Throw era, and Freddie Gibbs is on fire throughout! Each one does what he does best here and ups the ante. 'Lib is focused on crackling soul beats and hazy funk – masterfully utilizing vintage and contemporary sample sources from Donny Hathaway and Syl Johnson to Kaidi Tatham and The Heliocentrics – delivering the right kind of gritty headnodding vibe without compromising on his distinctive style. Freddie Gibbs is uncompromisingly raw and fiercely focused, varying the speed of his flow when the mood strikes, so what sounds like it might be an uncommonly inspired freestyle one second rolls into the most dexterous lyricism for the next couple minutes. Seriously strong stuff, with just a few guest appearances by Pusha T, Killer Mike, Anderson.Paak, Yasiin Bey & Black Thought. Titles include "Half Manne Half Cocaine", "Cataracts", "Gat Damn", "Education", "Crime Pays", "Palmolive", "Guannis", "Soul Right" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. ✨✧ RZA & OthersAfro Samurai ... CD
Koch, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
The RZA's fine second phase career as a top notch soundtrack maestro continues with Afro Samurai – the music for the anime/blacksploitation hybrid starring Samuel L Jackson – and a varied batch of tracks that's really a lot more than the typical Ghost Dog/early Wu Tang style beats you might be expecting! Naturally, RZA does bring plenty of martial arts style and soul beat instrumentals, but there are also a lot of vocal cuts – which run the gamut from raw freestyle-like bits to atmospheric r&b. GZA drops in, as do pioneers Big Daddy Kane and Q-Tip! Titles include "Afro Theme" with rhymes by RZA, "Certified Samurai" feat Talib Kweli, Lil Free & Suga Bang, "Just A Little Dude" feat Q-Tip & Free Murder, "Oh" and "The Walk" feat Stone Mecca, "Cameo Afro" feat Big Daddy Kane, GZA & Suga Bang, "Take Sword Pt 1" with RZA & Berretta 9 and more vocal tracks, plus the instrumentals "Afro Intro", "Afro's Father Fight", "The Empty 7 Theme", "Afro Samurai Theme (First Part and Second Part)" and more. Several bonus tracks, too, billed as Bobby Digital! CD
