Bobbi HumphreyFreestyle ... CD
Epic (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $9.99
Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Bobbi also sings a bit on the set, but in a way that's pretty darn great – wonderfully sweet at times, with a bit of an influence from Minnie Riperton that really warms up the set. Arrangements are by Cleveland Eaton, with a bit of help from Art Jenkins – and production is by Ralph MacDonald, who clearly has a great ear for the blend of jazz and soul that Bobbi's going for on the set. And although Larry Mizell's not on board, some of the cuts here still have that stepping/sliding sort of groove from Bobby's Mizell-produced Blue Note years – a really wonderful sound that's a perfect showcase for her uniquely jazzy talents on the flute! Tracks include "Freestyle", "Home Made Jam", "Sunset Burgundy", "Good Times", "My Destiny", "I Could Love You More", and "If You Want It". CD

Nathan HainesRight Now ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... $3.99
Damn wonderful work from Nathan Haines – and proof that the reigning prince of the London cosmic scene is still going strong! This long-awaited set is every bit as wonderful as anything we've heard from Haines before – a sublime blend of soulful rhythms, jazzy riffs, and righteous energy – put together with a sound that draws heavily from the most soulful music of the 70s – the kind of funky fusion and spiritual jazz records that we've always loved so much! Nathan's one of the few cats who can get a sound like this so right – so much so, we'd easily rank a record like this next to some of our classics on labels like Fantasy Records or Black Jazz. The album's stacked with plenty of great keyboards, wrapped around Haines' soulful saxophone lines – and about half the cuts feature vocals, by guests who include Marlena Shaw, Vanessa Freeman, Ty, and Tama Waipara. Titles include "Tell Me What You're Feeling", "Home", "Talkin Around", "Right Now", "Today", "Pick It Up", "Creation Calling", and "Gitmo Ritmo". Also features bonus tracks – "Creation Calling (summer street rmx)" and "Tell Me What You're Feeling (Domu voc mix)". CD

Jessica LaurenAlmeria ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $13.99
When Jessica Lauren first grabbed our ears 20 years ago, she was a keyboardist on the London contemporary scene – but with a much deeper jazz vision than most – an artist whose appearances on record always made any sort of song come across with a spiritual sound that was unique for the time! Move forward to the present, when so many others have finally hit Jessica's territory – and the pianist has stepped far forward again – to open up this rich flow of ideas that's overflowing with global elements as well! The album's easily Jessica's deepest work to date – and not only features her own great keyboards and percussion, but also this very cool wordless vocal style – borrowed a bit from Brazilian fusion of the 70s, but given a fresh spin here – and combined with instrumentation that includes woodwinds, marimba, percussion, flugelhorn, and drums. The whole thing's wonderful – with echoes and elements that evoke the special genre-crossing space of Bobby Hutcherson in the mid 70s, the work of Flora Purim and Airto, the 70s South African recordings of Dollar Brand – and some of the hippest sides of some of Lauren's London contemporaries. Titles include "Simba Jike", "Amalfi", "Kofi Nomad", "Teck Et Bambou", "Chocolate Con Churros", "Argentina", and "Beija Flor". CD

MenagerieArrow Of Time ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Deep sounds from Menagerie – a group led by funky genius Lance Ferguson, who's given us wonderful work in a variety of styles over the years – but who here has turned his talents to the world of spiritual jazz, which he takes on brilliantly with this excellent ensemble! Menagerie have a classic vibe that really lives up to the cover of the record – a style that's in that post-Coltrane moment when jazz groups were getting even more sophisticated with both their performance and sense of composition – really pushing the boundaries with new ideas, and a much larger vision in jazz. Lance plays guitar in the group, but the fuller energy comes from the tenor, alto, and soprano sax of Phillip Noy, as well as the trumpet of Ross Irwin, and use of piano and Fender Rhodes by Mark Fitzgibbon – all excellent players who can really hit the right sort of crescendo in spirit! The leadoff track has some great vocals, and all others are instrumental – nice and long, and very deep – with titles that include "Evolution", "The Arrow Of Time", "Escape Velocity", "Spiral", and "Nova". Courtney PineBlack Notes From The Deep ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
One of the greatest albums in years from reedman Courtney Pine – a set that firmly reminds us just what an important part of the British scene he was many years back! In the years after the experimental waves of British jazz rock and avant jazz, Pine was a surprisingly strong voice in the 80s and 90s – one whose talents reached these shores, as one of the first soulful British jazz musicians to really show a different side of the London scene – where his strong vision and talent for collaboration were continually opening new ears and new possibilities! That aspect of Pine's music is very firmly in place here – on a set that's got a strong combo at the core, but which also features vocals from Omar on four tracks – an addition to the set that also changes up the rhythms a bit, and reminds us just how important Courtney was at giving younger musicians and singers a chance to shine. Pine plays tenor and flute, and the album also features electric and acoustic piano from Robert Mitchell, organ from Ed Bentley, bass from Alec Dankworth, and drums from Rod Youngs. Omar sings on "Rules", "Butterfly", "Darker Than The Blue", and "In Another Time" – and other titles include "You Know Who You Are", "The Morning After The Night Before", "Rivers Of Blood", "Word To The Wise", and "A Change Is Sure To Come". ✨✧ Andy Tolman CartelCipher ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of funky soundtrack grooves – one that was recently recorded by guitarist Andy Tolman, but which instantly takes us back to the best 70s film scores by artists like Quincy Jones, Johnny Pate, or Lalo Schfrin! Like both of those giants at their best, Andy works here in a style that's rooted in jazz – with superb arrangements and strong individual elements at the core – all fused together with a tight funky vibe that's never too slick or commercial at all – but which also has a lot more big-picture approach than the usual deep funk combo style too! There's also nothing "easy" about the music – no flip retro references, or cheap copycat modes – as Andy's sound here is very original, and very proudly its own – with a strength that makes it more than able to live up to the legendary status we're kind of giving it. Titles include "Cypher", "Speedball", "Politea Square", "Tempo Do Sol", "Claret & Blues", "You What", and "Copra Libertadores". LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The early 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D! Along with Showbiz and AG's first EP, and Lord Finesse's first couple releases, this record helped introduce the world to one of the most solid crews in hip hop, DITC – who reigned supreme for years, making top quality records one after another. The classic and oft-imitated Diamond beats laid the blueprint for so much hip hop to follow – and the titles include "Sally Got A One Track Mind," "Best Kept Secret," "I'm Outta Here," "Check One, Two", "Freestyle (Yo That's The Sh..)" and more! Independent Chicago hip hop from emcee Epik 1 – a born & bred Chicagoan with roots in the city's late 90s freestyle and open mic scene, and a genuine love and appreciation for block rocking hip hop history for the old school to today. Produced by Illpee with no nonsense, headnodding beats, this set finds a really fine balance between celebrating the roots of classic era indies beats and rhymes centric craft, with a fairly timeless feel overall – right at home in the here-and-now. Titles include "Hip Hop 101", "Fat Caps", "Rat Race", "No Free Beasts", "Soul By The Tup", "Never 4 Get", "Clap", "Love 4 Ever", "Night Owl" and more. CD

GrottoGrotto 2 – Wait No Hurry ... LP
EMI/Odion Livingstone (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $23.99
A wonderfully funky set from this hip Nigerian group of the 70s – a set that's a lot more soulful than their trippy first album – and done with a range of great grooves overall! The instrumentation here is focused on the core talents of the combo – with lots of riffing guitar alongside the drums and bass – used in ways that are a lean, simple take on the modes of bigger Nigerian funk acts of the time – clubby, but not really disco, as there's a pretty sharp edge on most of the tunes! Vocals still take on some of the spacier qualities of the group's debut, but they sound very different here in a funkier setting – and the album also features some nice guest keyboards and funky flute at a few spots too. Titles include "Bad City Girl", "Yeah Runnin", "Freestyle", "Who Gives A Damn", "When Will I Learn", and "Maya". LP, Vinyl record album

Original FlavorThis Is How It Is ... CD
Atlantic, 1992. Used ... $14.99
The first album from Original Flavor, and along with the Jaz, the roots of the Roc A Fella clan. With the Dash brothers holding down the business end of this LP, and Ski fronting the group with a little help from Clark Kent, this middle of the road commercial hip hop album didn't make much of an impression. There's nothing wrong with the rhymes – they remind us of a less clever version of the playful side of Tribe, and the beats bounce nicely with a bit of early 90s jazz flavor, but ultimately this album's more of sidebar than main chapter in the hip hop history books, though at this point, an essential one. 13 tracks in all: "This Is How It Is", "When I Make It", "Kick The Butta", "Waitin' 4 My Break", "Handle The Technique", "Swingin", "Best Friend's Girl", "Way Wit Words", "Give 'Em Some Wrek", "Gumdrops", "I Like It (Freestyle)", "Brain Storm" and "Here We Go". Slum VillageLost Scrolls Vol 2 – The Slum Village Edition ... LP
Ne'Astra, Late 90s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.98
Lost tracks for the Fantastic Vol 2 sessions and beyond – recorded from the mid-to-late 90s and featuring perfect production by Jay Dee! For years onward we appreciated music that came out under the Slum Village banner, even without the much-heralded early line-up – those later efforts deserve more respect – but we're not gonna lie, it's a real joy to get another helping of classic line-up Slum Village and this era of Dilla's production style. It's built from the bare essentials of beats, bass and fairly little in addition – be it spare piano or other elements – and he ekes so much expansive atmosphere out of those minimal building blocks. The MCs fresh and focused as ever too, even on the freestyles, showing how sharp they are on the mic even without pre-penned, more-focused rhymes. It opens with a killer "Hold Tight" remix feat Q-Tip and it doesn't dip any lower from that high point. Other tracks include "Burn", "Hardcore", "Bring It Back", "Dilla Freestyle", "Oh!", "Like This", "Living It Up", "Lab Test" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Sparky DThis Is Sparky D's World (with bonus tracks) ... CD
B-Boy/Octave (Japan), 1988. New Copy ... $18.99
Maybe not the first full length album by a female MC, but a really well-remembered set from the early days – and one that hardly tries to go for any crossover modes at all! Instead, Sparky-D really keeps it live and close to the streets – beginning the set with an acapella track that almost feels like a freestyle – then following with lots of strong production work from Spyder D – who again keeps things lean and nicely sharp – really providing the kind of beat-heavy burst that could make old school rhymes sound so powerful and urgent! Titles include "Never Ran, Never Will", "Grand Creator K-Wiz, Best In The Biz", "This Is Sparky D's World", "I Can't Stop", "Yankee Boy", "Punk Rock Rap", "Throwdown", and "Sparky's Rap". CD features bonus tracks – including "Throwdown (12" version)", "Throwdown (stupid Doc's dub)", "I Can't Stop (12" version)", "Changes (inst)", "I Can't Stop (inst)", and "Changes (12" version)". CD
