Dan BerksonDialogues ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $24.99 30.99
Dan Berkson's had a hand in many different styles of music over the years, but this set is a wonderfully contemporary expression of his keyboard talents in jazz – served up here both on acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – as Dan works in a "trio plus" mode that has some other artists joining in the sound from time to time! At the core is the combo with Andrea Di Biase on bass and Jon Scott on drums – musicians who do a good job of blocking them selves around Berkson's keyboard lines, which have this open sense of flow that creates its own structure, even when loose – maybe evolved out of the Bill Evans school, but very much Dan's own bag. The leadoff track "Unity" is a great Rhodes number, with Magnus Pickering on trumpet and Alam Nathoo on tenor – and one more track features Pickering as well, on titles that include "Live Bait", "Sketches", "The Court", and "Maggie's Last Day". Kizzy CrawfordWay I Dream ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 10.98
A fantastic debut from Kizzy Crawford – a soul singer who will most likely be huge in years to come – thanks to an approach that seems to effortlessly cross borders and boundaries! Kizzy's lyrics are personal, but positive – and the music is a blend of soul instrumentation with acoustic elements – at a level that makes it clear that Crawford's not just trying to be another neo soul diva, or retro soul vocalist – but instead is really ready to address the world with a sound that's all her own! Songs are all original, and instrumentation changes up with a nice sense of variety, but without ever making us think that Kizzy can't make up her mind – on titles that include "Golden Brown", "Progression", "Dive", "Real Love", "The Way I Dream", "Waiting Game", and "Adlewyrchu Arnaf". DieslerRhythm Station ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2007. Used ... $2.99
The funkiest work so far from Diesler – making a step here from the Tru Thoughts label over to Freestyle – and definitely deepening their groove in the process! In a way, though, the set still shows plenty of Diesler's roots in the TT scene – as it's a great batch of cut-up funky rhythms, topped with lots of soulful vocals – very much in the spirit of some of Quantic's best work from a few years back! The change is definitely a great one for Diesler – who seem to have gotten a bit more focus than before, and really used the new direction in all the best ways possible – one of which is to accommodate a wide range of guest stars who include Laura Vane, Katie Miller, Miss Afrika, Paranormal, Kinny, and Double Yellow. Titles include "Welcome To Hellmouth", "Carla's Beat", "Restless", "Passion", "Lovetouch", "Crush", "Dopplegangland", and "The I In Team". CD

KokoloSabroso (main, White Mike rmx)/Mama Don't Want No Gun (Beatfanatic rework) ... 12-inch
Freestyle (UK), 2005. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Kokolo pick up a bit more of a Latin groove than usual – mixing it in with their fierce Afro Funk riffing, and making for a very sweet little tune! The track burns and bubbles with the best of both cultures – a highly rhythmic number with some Spanish language lyrics – and a few more electronic touches on the remix! "Don't Want No Gun" gets a nice Beatfanatic rework here too – lots of guitars riffing underneath the horns! 12-inch, Vinyl record

MenagerieMany Worlds ... LP
Freestyle (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
A beautiful set of spiritual jazz from this hip Australian group – a combo who are headed up by guitarist Lance Ferguson, who you'll know from a host of great funk and soul projects over the years – but who shows a much deeper side of his talents with Menagerie! The group has a strong lineup of saxes, trumpet, piano, Fender Rhodes, vibes, and lots of percussion – with vocals on some cuts, but an overall focus on the group's instrumentation – which spins out beautifully on the long tracks on the set! At times, the groove is like the currents of spiritualism that ran through late 60s Blue Note – which is A-OK with us – and titles include "Many Worlds", "Free Thing", "Mountain Song", "Hymn Of The Turning Stone", and "Quantum Blues". OmarOmar – The Anthology ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A huge career overview of the music of Omar Lyefook – one of our favorite soul singers of the past few decades – right from the moment he first wowed the world with a bedroom-produced album that rivaled the greatness of Stevie Wonder! Omar's placement on the UK scene has maybe got him less attention than he's deserved on our shores – but don't let that stop you from diving in and really digging the sublime array of sounds on the set – music that was some of the freshest, most original soul of the 90s – and which continued to move at a very high level as Omar kept creating over the decades. The 2CD package includes out of print gems from his early records, and other bits from more recent years – and a fair bit of collaborations with artists who include Carleen Anderson, Terri Walker, Stevie Wonder, Caron Wheeler, Erykah Badu, Leon Ware, and Robert Glasper. 33 tracks in all – including "Music", "Last Request", "There's Nothing Like This", "Pass It On", "Feeling You", "Kiss It Right", "The Man", "Treat You", "F*ck War Make Love", "De Ja Vu", "Insatiable", "Doobie Doobie Doo", "Gave My Heart", "Be Thankful", "This Is Not A Love Song", "Little Boy", "Tell Me", "Vicky's Tune", "Bully", "Who Chooses The Seasons", and "Last Request". Q OrchestraJourney Through Sounds ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2010. Used ... $1.99
Less of an orchestra than a tight mix of funk, soul, Latin, and clubby elements – all fused down nicely, and mixed up by Dimitris Nassios! There's plenty of older elements in the mix – wah wah guitars, funky horns, conga beats, and more – all wrapped up with some tight contemporary production that keeps things nice and lean, while still bringing up the funky elements inherent to the music! The whole thing almost comes across as some sort of remix of 70s cuts, but has its own voice as well – and titles include "Boca Que Engana", "So What", "Alley Trap", "My Way", "Ritmo Diabolico", "Not The End", and "Spread Your Wings". Klik/Freestyle (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Warmly wonderful early work from William Bunny Clarke – billed here under a different name, but the same singer who'd rise to great fame a few years later as Bunny Rugs in Third World! The vibe here is different than his hits with that group – more laidback and mellow, with great production from Lee Perry – who knows more than enough to let Bunny shine in the lead when he wants, even while bringing in some sweet Scratch touches from time to time! The set features the wicked funky number "Kinky Fly" – plus lots of mellow rockers, including a version of "Use Me", and the cuts "What's The Use", "Big May", "Let Love Touch Us Now", "Second Avenue", and even versions of "Sweet Caroline" and "I Am I Said" – which have Bunny and Perry making sweet magic from the songs of Neil Diamond! CD features bonus tracks – a great version of the William De Vaughn classic "Be Thankful For What You Got" in a discomix version – plus "I Never Had It So Good", "Hip Harry", and "Hip Version". CD

SpeedometerSoul Groovin' ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... $4.99
Heavy funk from Speedometer – one of the coolest combos cooking in the contemporary deep funk underground! The album offers a great chance to hear the group live – playing with a sound that's every bit as sharp as on their studio records, with an edge that's even grittier – proof that these guys have plenty going on in the instrumental department, as they deliver a full-on assault filled with heavy drums, burning Hammond, choppy guitar, and lots of great work on horns! Ria Currie joins the group for some very soulful lead vocals on a few tracks – and titles include "At The Speakeasy", "Soul Grooving", "Kool & The Gang/Let The Music Take Your Mind", "Work It Out", "No Man Worries", "Am I Your Woman", "Kool To Be Uncool", and "Answer to Mother Popcorn". Freestyle (UK), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mix of funky storytelling and sharp modern soul from Candice Monique – a singer and poet – backed well by The Optics! The title track kinds things off with a mix of stripped down, but cleanly thumping funky soul and Candice in closer to a spoken word funk chanteuse mode, but she follows it up with some very sweetly sung numbers. They cover a lot of stylistic territory here, and they do it well! Titles include "In My Soul", "For All Time", "Mama Don't Know", "Feel The Vibe", "Soul Dance", "My Child", "Shave My Head", Crazy Crazy Thing", "Wish I Was A Bass" and more. CD

Funky Afro Soul from Oz – the brilliant full length debut of Shaolin Afronauts! Flight Of The Ancients blasts off from the bedrock of 70s West Africa and Ethio funk influences, but their one of the rare few combos who pull it off without it feeling like a retread of past glories. Part of that success stems from their working really well in a number of modes – filtering classic funky soul and jazz funk influences with modern inventiveness and brilliant musicianship. Drums and congas bring the percussive heat with a great horn section of saxes, trumpets and bass clarinet, tight guitar grooves and heavy bass. A solid combo from the fertile Australian funk scene! Includes "Journey Through Time", "Rise With The Blind", "Flight Of The Ancients", "Shaolin Theme", "Kilimanjaro", "Shira", "The Quiet Lion" and "The Scarab". LP, Vinyl record album

A 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D – and like some of the rest of the best of the decade, a set that was slightly slept-on at the time, but which has gone to have massive impact over the decades – still sounding completely fresh in comparison to bigger hits of the time! Maybe not the first full length album by a female MC, but a really well-remembered set from the early days – and one that hardly tries to go for any crossover modes at all! Instead, Sparky-D really keeps it live and close to the streets – beginning the set with an acapella track that almost feels like a freestyle – then following with lots of strong production work from Spyder D – who again keeps things lean and nicely sharp – really providing the kind of beat-heavy burst that could make old school rhymes sound so powerful and urgent! Titles include "Never Ran, Never Will", "Grand Creator K-Wiz, Best In The Biz", "This Is Sparky D's World", "I Can't Stop", "Yankee Boy", "Punk Rock Rap", "Throwdown", and "Sparky's Rap". A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees.
