Agitation FreeLast ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), 1976. New Copy ... $29.99
The last album from the legendary early run of Agitation Free – and a set that definitely shows the group at the top of their game! The tracks are long, but never rambling – jamming, but never in a noodly way – and these guys really show why their contribution to German prog was so important at the time – able to handle some of the minimal progressions of their contemporaries, while finding a way to soar forward too – yet always with a sound that's completely fresh and free of cliche! Keyboards and guitar spiral out wonderfully together, and looped a bit in some really great ways – and titles include "Soundpool", "Laila II", and "Looping IV". LP, Vinyl record album

Free DesignCosmic Peekaboo ... CD
Marina (Germany), 2001. Used ... $9.99
New millennium work from the legendary Free Design! And surprisingly, the album's pretty darn great. It really picks up where the group's last recordings of the early 70s left off – modernizing the sound slightly, giving it a mid 70s LA groove, but still staying very true to the group's original naive harmony style. Original leader Chris Dedrick arranged and produced the album, and it features the original trio of Sandy, Chris, and Bruce Dedrick, plus some additional vocals by newcomer Rebecca Pellett. If anything, the songs are perhaps a bit sadder than some of the group's early work – showing the toll of time and years – but they're no less compelling vocally, and all the harmonies are wonderfully intact. Titles include "Day Breaks", "Peekaboo", "Younger Son", "McCarran Airport", "The Hook", and "Listen". CD

Free DesignKites Are Fun (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Light In The Attic/Project 3, 1967. Used ... $9.99
The very first Free Design album, recorded in 1967 for Project 3 records – and darn tough to find in any format! The album is a swirling mix of vocal harmonies and cute little tuneful songs, sung by the group in a style that's sort of a mix between the Hi-Los and The Singers Unlimited – but with a strangely hip and naive quality that's never been duplicated since! Includes the tracks "A Man & A Woman", "Michelle", "Don't Turn Away", "My Brother Woody", "Make The Madness Stop" and more! CD features 2 bonus tracks – mono versions of "Proper Ornament" and "Kites Are Fun". CD

Free DesignSing For Very Important People (splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Sunny wonderfulness from one of the grooviest vocal groups of all time! This is Free Design's legendary album for children – referred to in the title as "very important people" – and it's a strangely hip set of tracks designed to get the kids to open up in a groovy late 60s kind of way. Given that the Free Design always sounded like a bunch of hippy kids, the setting is perfect for them – and they dreamily make their way through a great set of nearly all original tracks that sparkle with an innocent charm that's slyly deeper than you'd guess from the kid-orientation of the set! Original titles include "Love You", "Kites Are Fun", "Daniel Dolphin", "Ronda 'Go Round", "Bubbles", "Little Cowboy", and "Scarlet Tree". LP, Vinyl record album

Free DesignStars/Time/Bubbles/Love (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Light In The Attic, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
One of the wildest of the classic Free Design albums, and one that will leave you scratching your head – thinking that these guys were either the biggest acid freaks around, or the most simplistic kiddie-minded adults you'll ever meet! We don't know what got into the water in the studio on this one, but the group are really expanding their minds here – taking on some groovy-as-groovy can be material – all with the sweet mixture of harmony vocals, easy instrumentation, and hippie-era naivete! The titles alone state the case – with tunes that include "Stay Off Your Frown", "Bubbles", "Kije's Ouji", "That's All, People", and "Butterflies Are Free" – plus a great cover of "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head". CD features the bonus tracks – "To A Black Boy", which is previously unreleased, and "Butterflies Are Free (single version)". CD

Free MovementI've Found Someone Of My Own ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Righteous soul from The Free Movement – a mixed male/female harmony group with a feel that's similar to The Fifth Dimension or The Friends Of Distinction, but a bit hipper! The group have a sunny feel that's quite nice – soaring harmonies reaching to the top of the groove on the best cuts, rolling around in a positive, soulful style that still holds up strongly over the years. Arrangements are by Michael Omartin, Jimmie Haskell, and Toxey French – and the record includes their hit "I've Found Someone Of My Own", plus "Son of The Zulu King", "Where Do We Go From Here", and "The Harder I Try (The Bluer I Get)". These guys are known by some as the backing band of Anderson.Paak, but they're a hell of a group on their own – rock-solid right at the core, and able to effortlessly craft a sweet blend of funk and soul – yet also leave room for plenty of guests along the way! The musicianship here is fantastic – classic, yet very much their own – echoing the perfection of 70s studio work, but with a very contemporary vibe and a nicely up-close spirit –a sound that's perfect all the way through, and which makes a great accompaniment to guest work from TI, Shafiq Husayn, Daniel Caesar, Syd, Benny Sings, T Nava, Callum Connor, Conway, Westside Gunn, and even Anderson.Paak. The kind of record that's perfect for bumpin all summer long – with titles that include "Gidget", "Rene", "Shibuya", "Eternal Light", "The Rivington", "Beauty & Essex", and "On Sight". CD

Hans Koller Free SoundNome ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1974. New Copy ... $16.99
Fantastic work from avant saxophonist Hans Koller – rare material that stands with the best Free Sound albums he released for MPS in the 70s! By this point in his career, Koller was really exploding with talent – a sax player who first begun in the postwar years with modes that were more California modern, but expanded and changed throughout the 60s – to the point where Hans was one of the most open-minded, freely-creative musicians on the central European scene! If you've only heard Koller's straighter tenor, you'll really be blown away here – as Hans blows both that horn and soprano sax, in a freewheeling group that also features Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Zbigniew Siefert on alto and violin, Adelhard Rodinger on bass, and Janusz Stefanski on drums. And while the music definitely lives up to the Free Sound name of the group, it's also not entirely free jazz – as there's a sense of structure and larger modern ideals that hearkens back to some of Koller's earlier music, even while the soloists are taking off. Titles include the 40 minute workout on "Nome", the 11 minute "Ulla M Kompanie 22/8", and the surprisingly spiritual "Kunstkopfindianer/Adea". CD

Mike Nyoni & Born FreeMy Own Thing ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99 19.98
Wonderfully trippy sounds from Mike Nyoni – one of the funkier talents in the Zamrock scene of the 70s – even though he also works with lots of the slight psychedelic touches of other contemporaries too! Mike's style on guitar is a bit too loose to be funk, but it's also got this nice rhythmic pulse that keeps things interesting – and some of the cuts pick up the rhythms a bit more, so that there's some snapping currents that make for a great contrast with his offbeat vocals and weirdly wobbly way of singing! As always with Now Again, the reissue of this material is a great lost treasure – handled perfectly, with great sound and detailed notes that really do justice to the music – on titles that include "I Don't Know", "Come Back To Me", "My Dear Girl", "Messed Day", "Mad Man", "My Own Thing", "Coming Home", "It's Only A Dream", and "Soweto". 2CD set features all three of Mike's rare albums – Born Free, I Can't Understand You, and Kawalala. Spirit FreeSpirit Free Plays Starship (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Vega/Numero, 1971. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A trippy little combo with a distinct post-Coltrane feel – stretching out here wonderfully, on a hip little session on a homegrown label! The group hail from the unlikely spot of Las Vegas – but they've got a deeply spiritual sound that rivals the best work on the coasts in the early 70s – a very searching, righteous sort of groove – crafted beautifully from the tenor sax lines of Rick Davis, and the sweet Fender Rhodes of Ron Feuer! The album's filled with long, exploratory tracks – tunes that are free, but never too much so – and the mixture of electric keys and tenor works nicely throughout – giving the album a really unique and unified feel that sets it apart from other small jazz sets of its type. All tunes are originals by the group – and titles include "Vibrations", "Starship", "Spirit Free", and "Isis Unveiled". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Horizon", "Starship (alt)", and "Dear Latin Friend". CD

Project 3/El (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The complete early recordings of The Free Design – one of the most heavenly vocal groups ever recorded! The lineup features two gals and two guys – singing together in ways that take the earlier harmony modes of the 60s into some very special territory – a bit like some of the more creative pop taking place at A&M Records, ala Sergio Mendes or The Sandpipers – but with a more innocent sound that really sets the tracks apart – even when the group are singing other folks' material! But the real charmers here are their original tunes, which come in more and more as the albums move on – innocent themes and playful lyrical lines that were almost ignored at the time, but went on to influence countless of artists and groups over the years. The package features the full albums Kites Are Fun, You Could Be Born Again, Heaven Earth, Stars Time Bubbles Love, Sing For Very Important People, One By One, and There Is A Song – plus lots more rare tracks from singles and archive tapes – including their great Christmas single! LST/No Business (Lithuania), 1969/1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from this lesser-known German improv group from the start of the 70s – two rare albums that are as free as their name, and which were both initially pressed in small runs of just a few hundred copies! The quartet have a surprisingly lyrical approach to their music at times – thanks especially to the reed work of Deiter Scherf, whose work on flute is sublime, and sometimes matched by that of Gerhard Konig, who plays both guitar and flute in the group. Scherf also handles alto, oboe, piano, shenai, and prepared trumpet – the last of which has a great sound – and the rest of the quartet includes Michael Sell on trumpet and Wolfgang Schlick on drums and metal bracket – an array of instruments that is changed up often during the long performances on the record! Titles include "Frictions" – a continuous piece that took up the whole first LP – and "Frictions Now", in two parts. CD

Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work from one of of those 70s Dutch groups who were maybe a bit too inside to get the attention of the avant scene of the time – but who made some fantastically inventive sounds that were all their own! The record bristles with imagination from the reedwork of Dick Vennik – completely on fire here, and almost the main attraction, save for the fact that the rest of the group is so well-matched that all players leap into the fray with a bold energy that would never be the case if they were just making room for a soloist! Vennik plays soprano, tenor, flute, and bass clarinet – alongside Rob Van Den Broeck on piano, Harry Emmery on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums – all with a vibe that, if we had to find something to compare it to, might match the best late 70s sessions on the German Ego label. Titles include "To Raul", "Napalis", "Marathon", "Final Call", and "West End". CD

CBS/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the great late 70s Columbia sets from the Earth Wind & Fire side of the universe – the one and only album by this obscure west coast group, who get some strong help in the studio from Phillip Bailey! Bailey co-produced, and wrote some great songs for the record – and the group's own mix of jazz, funk, and soul is very much in the best spirit of Earth Wind & Fire at the time – tight at all the right moments, but also with this righteous energy in the background – an overall feel that's way deeper than most large ensembles on major labels. This spirit really comes through in the sublime cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window" – which has a beautifully mellow jazzy groove, and which is on a par with anything Maurice White was laying down in the mid-tempo mode in the 70s – but the whole album's mighty nice, and other titles include "Smile", "Spirit Of Love", "Second Coming", and "Say You Do". Transparency, 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An amazing document of the California underground scene of the 70s – four volumes worth of material from the Los Angeles Free Music Society – recorded by a range of different artists who were all invited to contribute cheaply to a series of Blorp Esette albums! The range of work here is really massive – and in a way, the whole thing comes together more as a sound collage than anything else – some highly arty music mixed with trippier rock sounds, bits of roots, avant sound experimentation, and more – all coming across with a style that's incredibly fierce, kind of post-hippie, pre-CA hardcore – a slice of the west coast that's really been lost to time. There's definitely strains here of some of the SF scene that you'll find in the Ralph Records world – but much of it is a lot more obscure too, and there's almost a west coast version of the East Village/ESP sound going down too. 4CDs worth of work, and way too much to list here – but we can say that contributors include The Doo Dooettes, Ju Suk Reet Meate, Anne Harney, Reverend Marty Nation, Smegma, Nopar King, South Pasedena Free Music Ensemble, Ace & Duce, Bix Flent, Christian Death, Dennis Duck, Henry Kaiser, Mr Foon, Electric Willy Trio, The Patients, Ed Barger, and many others. Polskie Radio (Poland), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soaring work from a Polish ensemble of the 80s – a group who definitely have some of the free cooperation promised by their name – but also resonate with a range of other elements too! At some level, these guys remind us of the more inventive bigger bands that broke on the European scene at the end of the 60s – especially those famously recorded by MPS – but they also sparkle here with touches from both the Polish free jazz and fusion worlds of the 70s – as they can be tight one minute, use electric elements the next, yet still let some of their soloists step out in very striking ways. We don't recognize the players from other groups or records – and we know a fair bit of other Polish jazz – but we can say that the ensemble features three trumpets, alto sax, other reeds, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Titles are compositions by Wojciech Konikiewicz and Wojciech Czajkowski – and titles include "56", "Promotion", "Swingu Dangu", "Bartek 23 In Short", and "Klaus Patera". CD

CTI, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". LP, Vinyl record album

Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A funky treasure trove from Apple & The Three Oranges – a group we hardly know at all, but who really blow us away with the cuts on this collection! The groove is plenty hard right from the get-go – the best of the funky 45 underground of the early 70s – which means that there's more 60s rawness on the record than you'd get from bigger-label funk at the time – as Ed "Apple" Nelson still works here with a mostly underground vibe! Ed plays drums – which are mighty hard on most numbers – and his vocals have this offbeat, off-kilter, over the top quality that almost reminds us a bit of the Hank Ballard/James Brown recordings for late 60s King – particularly in the way that Nelson's completely unbridled with his energy. The whole thing's great – one of the best funky collections we've heard in years – and presented with a rich amount of notes and historical information too. Titles include "Free & Easy (parts 1 & 2)", "Moon Light", "Curse Upon The World", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Down Home Publicity", "True Love Will Never Die", "Gotta Stand For Something (parts 1 & 2)", and "I'll Give You A Ring". John CorbettListener's Guide To Free Improvisation ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 15.00
A much-needed book for the open-minded listener – a well-written volume from jazz critic John Corbett – and one that's bound to widen your ears to a whole new realm of listening! The book's pocket-sized – maybe so that you can sneak it into a club when visiting a free jazz concert – and it's written in a style that's both personal, but very directive – with a full understanding of the complexities that come into play when listening to improvised music, and a guide towards facing some of the more difficult challenges involved! Corbett clearly loves this music, but without any sort of high ideals – none of the too-cool-for-school modes that are usually standard with the avant garde, and instead this very down to earth approach that shows the listener that they've got all the tools needed to enjoy the music themselves. The goal here (one we can totally endorse) is to bring the listener face to face with new and challenging sounds – but in a way that allows them to instantly contextualize them too – yet without having to carry years of jazz or musical experience into the process. The book is divided up into easy-to-digest sections – and penned with a surprisingly warm style too. Book

A wonderfully spiritual album – and one that's maybe a bit of a surprise, given the later fame of the group! The group here is billed by their full name – Experience Unlimited – but where later known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". Yet as a classic album on the Black Fire label, this record is nothing like their 80s material at all – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju and the larger family of Black Fire artists! This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe – and a message to match the title and the cover. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful pressing – heavy tip-on cover, with oversize 12 page booklet of notes – limited only to the initial pressing!)

Dischi Della Quercia/Black Saint (Italy), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 11 CDs ... $42.99 52.99
A huge body of work from Italian pianist Giorgio Gaslini – material recorded for his own Dischi Della Quercia – a later imprint that really gave him the chance to express himself in a great number of ways! There's some really special albums on the set – records that include some key duet sessions – one with trombonist Roswell Rudd, one with altoist Anthony Braxton, and one with bassist Eddie Gomez – and some key group outings with some of the best younger Italian players, grouped together under Gaslini's mature direction, in pursuit of a range of sounds that run the gamut from traditional jazz modes to more avant sounds to some compelling Eastern experiments too. The package brings together 11 full albums, many of which we haven't seen on CD in a long long time – the records Murales, New Orleans Suite, Free Actions, Graffitti, Sharing, Live At The Public Theater, Ecstasy, Four Pieces, Indian Suite, Monodrama, and Skies Of China. Tubby HayesFree Flight ... CD
Jazz In Britain (UK), 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
British tenor giant Tubby Hayes left the planet all too soon – passing away at the age of 38 in 1973 – but right up to the end, he continued to blow away most of his contemporaries – as you'll hear from this set of unreleased live material from 1972! The recording is from a time when Hayes was actually coming back out of a bit of time away from the scene – recuperating from heart issues that were soon to take away his life – and the period is almost a return to the basics of Tubby's breakout recordings of the late 50s – when he emerged as a tenor soloist to rival American greats like Sonny Rollins or Dexter Gordon! You can definitely hear that quality here, as Tubbs takes on some older standards, plus a few originals – and spins out these wonderful long solos that never fair for imagination or soulful expression – and which also feature some occasional great moments on flute too. The group is a very familiar one – Mike Pyne on piano, Tony Levin on drums, and Ron Mathewson on pass – who happened to record the proceedings over the course of two nights at Ronnie Scotts. Titles include long takes on "Lady Celia", "Trane's Blues", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Trenton Place", and "I Thought About You" – plus two shorter incomplete tracks, "Seven Steps To Heaven" and "Sienna Red". LightmenFree As You Wanna Be (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Judnell/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 15.98
A record that definitely lives up to its title – as it's a lot freer and more spiritual than later work from drummer Bubbha Thomas and his Lightmen group! This set perfectly captures the unique vibe that the ensemble brought to the Houston scene at the start of the 70s – really the same sort of new jazz freedom explored by artists like Horace Tapscott in LA, or the AACM in Chicago – performed by a generation of musicians who might have been more straight ahead a few years before – but who really take off here in the new energy of the post-Coltrane years! Most numbers are still pretty rhythmic, and have a unified core – but some of the performances are even more outside than you'd know from later Lightmen records – showing a strong avant jazz pedigree for the members of the group. The lineup here features a very young Ronnie Laws on alto, soprano sax, and flute – sounding quite different than his jazz fusion work of the late 70s – and in addition to Thomas on drums, other players include Doug Harris on tenor, Carl Adams on trumpet, Kenny Abair on guitar, and Joe Singleton on trombone. Titles include "Creative Music", "Free As You Wanna Be", "May 67", "Luke 23:32-49", "#109 Psychosomatic", and "Talk Visit". Plus, this 2CD version features unreleased extended mono mixes – and a great booklet of notes! CD

Prince Far ITrojan Albums Collection (Free From Sin/Jamaican Heroes/Voice Of Thunder/Musical History) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99
Four fantastic albums from the legendary Prince Far I! The set begins with the classic Free From Sin – Great early work from Prince Far I – a stunning mix of reggae and dub, with a righteous quality that really gives the prince his title amongst 70s Jamaican royalty! Backing is by a version of the Roots Radics – with the excellent Style Scott on drums, Errol Holt on Bass, Bingy Bunny, Sowell and Chinna Smith on guitar, Bobby Kalphat and Snappin on keys, Bobby Ellis and Deadly Headly on horns, and Bongo Herman and Ras Millinek on percussion – but the real key to the sound is the way that Prince Far I produces the whole thing, and mixes his own sinister vocals with the heady, bottom-heavy rhythms – all with a quality that matches Lee Scratch Perry at his best! Titles include "Free From Sin", "Light Of Fire", "Reggae Music", "I & I Are the Chosen One", "Don't Deal With Folly", "Call On I In Trouble", "When Jah Ready You Got To Move", and "Siren". Jamaican Heroes is a totally great album by Prince Far I – and a set that already shows him building that crucial London/Kingston bridge that would be such a big part of his sound! The album features work from Sly & Robbie, and the killer drums of Style Scott on rhythm – but also includes contributions by London hipsters Viv Albertine & Ari Up (of the Slits), and David Toop (noted music writer and historian) – quite a mix, and all brought together wonderfully by the Prince's production, and really unique vocal approach. Titles include "Jamaican Heroes", "Prison Discipline", "Musical History", "Natty Champion", and "Golden Throne". Next up is a classic from Prince Far I – Voice Of Thunder couldn't be a more appropriate album title or moniker! Recorded at Channel One in 1981 with incredible analog dub production, it fully carries the grit, murk, heavy and heady soul of the 70s into the new decade –even if the sound is ultimately a bit different then the what he delivered in the 70s. That thunderous voice toasting over the rhythms is as incredible as ever – over the commanding bass of Professor Larry Silvera, tripped out drums & percussion by Jah Lloyd & Scully, occasional swirling keys by Steely, Tarzan and Tony Asher and the other great Channel One players. Titles include "Ten Commandments", "Every Time I Hear The Word", "Head Of The Buccaneer", "Shall Not Dwell In Wickedness", "Skinhead", and "Hold The Fort". Musical History is one of the last albums ever issued by Prince Far I – and a set that marks a fantastic cap to a too-short career! The Prince's vocal contributions are as impeccable as his dubby production work – and titles include "At The Cross", "More We Are Together", "Take Heed Frontline", "What You Gonna Do On Judgement Day", and "Tell Them About Jah Love". A really great little album from keyboardist Pat Rebillot – a player you might know from other 70s records with Herbie Mann, and a few other jazz artists – stepping out here as one of his few times as a leader! Pat really makes great use of the space to show off his own thing – soaring to the skies on keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, mellotron, Yamaha grand, and plenty of synthesizers – the last of which are used to bring in some cool cosmic touches – a bit like Pat Gleeson was doing around the same time! Herbie Mann produced, and the album's got a spacious sound that makes for some real CTI-like moments – with a group that features Tony Levin on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, and Sam Brown on guitar. Titles include "Free Fall", "The Naked Truth", "Monday's Something", "Beautiful Bend Ahead", and "In A Melancholy Funk". CD

There's a fair bit of organ on the set – never really soloing, but bubbling up on all the grooves – kind of this warm wash of color next to the harder riffing guitars and percussion, often a bit skittish, but held together nicely by the vocals – which often have some of the moodier qualities of Zamrock! A really compelling set from this important Japanese group of the 70s – a quartet headed up by guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi – but which features a very complex balance of work from all the individual members! The set initially begins with a traditional vibe, but then seems to step out with each new track – almost encompassing a history of modern jazz in the music, then moving past with its own sense of invention! Masayuki's guitar rings out on the spare "The Blues", which begins – but then moves aside for free flute work from Kenji Mori on a mindblowing take of "You Don't Know What Love Is" – almost handled with a late Dolphy vibe. A rare bit of modern jazz from Italy – featuring a group led by soprano/tenor sax player Eraldo Volante, and featuring trumpet, trombone, drums, and a piano-less double-bass rhythm team that gives the record a really unique sound! At some level, the feeling of the material is like ESP avant jamming – except for the fact that the freedom of the players is also firmly tethered to an ability to swing, as one of the bassists always seems to be working the rhythm, even when the other soloists are going quite far out. Mal WaldronFree At Last (extended edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
The title's no mistake, as the album was really one of Mal Waldron's first really outside sessions – a real embrace of the free jazz modes coming out of the European scene of the 60s, but in a way that's slightly different than most! As Waldron states in the liner notes, his vision here is free, but not total chaos – an approach to music that's much more unfettered than before, yet still somewhat rhythmically structured – so that the tunes themselves roll out with a great deal of drive and energy, almost modal at points, but a bit fuller overall. The rhythm section here is a great part of the success of the album – with Clarence Becton on drums and the amazing Isla Eckinger on bass – a player whose pulsating approach is a perfect foil for Waldron's bold work on piano. There's actually a surprising amount of groove-driven numbers here – hardly the free jazz of the FMP scene, and more in the mode of some of the most unfettered expressions going down at MPS at the time. Titles include "Rat Now", "Balladina", "1 3 234", "Rock My Soul", and "Boo". Features a full bonus album – with alternate takes of "Balladina", "Boo", and "1 3 234" – and a long take of "Willow Weep For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Jeff WalkerMr Bojangles – The Atco/Elektra Years (Mr Bojangles/Five Years Gone/Bein Free/Jerry Jeff/Too Old To Change) (5CD set) ... CD
Atco/Morello (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 5 CDs ... $34.99
Five full albums from Jerry Jeff Walker – presented here in a box set with original album art too! First up is Mr Bojangles – a fantastic early moment from Jerry Jeff Walker – a set that contains the huge "Mr Bojangles", but also features lots of the other sorts of amazing songs that really set Walker apart from the rest! The work is poised perfectly between folk and country – both worlds that would soon revere the smartness of Jerry Jeff's songwriting skills – and a young David Bromberg is an important part of the sound, on both lead acoustic and electric guitar! The production is great – as stripped-down as a folk record, but with some of the sensitivity and jazzier currents of a singer/songwriter album – and in addition to "Mr Bojangles", other tunes include "Gypsy Songman", "I Keep Changin", "Maybe Mexico", "I Makes Money", "Little Bird", "The Ballad Of The Hulk", nd "Round & Round". Next is Five Years Gone – a set with a cover that almost looks like some 80s indie rock record – which is maybe a good indication of just how far Jerry Jeff Walker has stretched out his sound since his debut! The style here is free of the folksier elements of the past – fuller arrangements that have piano and organ doing as much as guitar – mixed with bits of dobro and vibes that shade things with more subtle country colors – even though Jerry Jeff here is a lot less of a country singer than he'd soon become! Instead, there's a very open, honest presentation – on material that is very post-folk, and in a singer/songwriter mode that should have made Walker huge at this point. Titles include "Tracks Run Through The City", "Dead Men Got No Dreams", "Janet Says", "About Her Eyes", "Seasons Change", "Help Me Now", and "Happiness Is A Good Place To Visit But It Was So Sad In Fayetteville". Bein Free is an overlooked classic from Jerry Jeff Walker – and a set that's very different than his crossover pop of a few years before! Walker here really explodes as both the singer and songwriter that would make him an underground legend in the generation of Kris Kristofferson, Kinky Friedman, and Townes Van Zandt – someone who can touch mainstream country with his styles and sound, but who was also in a very separate space – one that was hip enough to get plenty of nods from the cognoscenti in the worlds of rock, folk, and singer/songwriters. The Dixie Flyers back up Jerry Jeff here, and give the record a nicely unified sound – thanks in part to work on piano and dobro from Jim Dickinson – on titles that include "Vince Triple O Martin", "But For The Time", "A Secret", "Nobody's", "Some Go Home", "Where Is The DAR When You Really Need Them", and "I'm Gonna Tell You". On the cover of Jerry Jeff, Walker looks more like a country singer than on previous records – and he maybe sounds more like one too, but with a richness and sensitivity that maybe echoes some of the Elektra albums of the period by Mickey Newbury – although a bit more upbeat too! As with Newbury, Walker's an artist whose songs earned great money for others – but who's always maybe one of the best interpreters of his tunes – working here with offbeat shifts in styles that are far from common country, and which maybe also echo the range of modes that Kris Kristofferson would evoke on his earliest records too. Titles include "Lone Wolf", "Bad News", "I'm Not Strange", "Comfort & Crazy", "Banks Of The Old Bandera", and "Her Good Lovin Grace". Too Old To Change is a record that's maybe a bit too early in the career of Jerry Jeff Walker to earn the "too old" in the name – it was just a bit over a decade since his debut – but it's also clear that Walker has lived a lot of life in the space of time, which you can definitely her in his choice of material and vocal performance. There's less originals than before, but Jerry Jeff does a great job of moving between up-close and personal songs and a few more rockish moments – opening up the sort of space that made his records like this a key bridge between the worlds of Kris Kristofferson and Steve Earle to come. Titles include "Mountains Of Mexico", "Old Nashville Cowboy", "Hands On The Wheel", "I Ain't Living Long Like This", "Too Old To Change", and "Northeast Texas Women". CD

An early 90s Hendrix tribute LP with The Cure, Eric Clapton, The Pretenders, Living Colour, Pat Metheny and more – a compilation that might seemed a little unnecessary at the time, with Jimi's legacy looming as large as ever – but in hindsight it's not only a testament to how far his influence spread to artists of different genres, each song casts works on it's own unique merits. What could've been a simple link from Jimi's heyday to the early 90s alt rock boom is so more diverse than that, with a tracklist that includes ""Purple Haze" by The Cure, "Stone Free" by Eric Clapton, "Red House" by Buddy Guy, ' Hey Joe" by Body Count, "Bold As Love" by The Pretenders, "You Got Me Floatin" by PM Dawn, "Crosstown Traffic" by Living Colour, "Third Stone From The Sun" by Pat Metheny and more. ✨✧ AmnestyFree Your Mind – The 700 West Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". After starting his career out with his funky group The Organizers, Odell Brown moved into a phase where he would act as the lead soloist in front of larger funky groups – like the one that appears on this record. The band was put together by Gene Barge, and they have a great soulful Cadet records sound – perfect for Brown's searing organ style. The solos are very lean, and have a nice nice strong quality to them. The band features Chisoul players like Morris Jennings, Henry Gibson, Louis Satterfield, Phil Upchurch, and Donald Myrick. A few tracks have ensemble vocals – and titles include "Nitty Gritty", "Free Delivery", "Come Together", "Free & Easy", and "Sign Of The Ram". Funky and hip! LP, Vinyl record album

A great follow-up to the African Spirits single from the team of Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella – and like that one, a set that draws heavily on influences from classic Afro Funk! "Free Your Mind" is an instrumental that has these great rising horn passages – soaring nicely over bubbling grooves served up by the duo – while "Imani River" has superb vocals from Bridgette Amofah, who really takes over the tune, and gives the whole thing the righteous vibe of some of the best 70s records by Letta Mbulu! Amofah returns on "Infinity" – a cut that brings together the best qualities of the previous two, with maybe a bit more of the clubby vibe that you'll know from Conte's classic work! The Dazz Band may be wild and free in the title, but the album's tighter than ever – a lean, focused approach to the Dazz Band sound – done here with loads of 80s production and instrumentation in the mix! The rhythms are heavy with drum machine lines – often mixed with keyboard bits and swirled together with a sound that's even more crossover than some of the group's earlier work. Vocals often take a back seat to the grooves – but on the ballads they shine through nicely, and remind us of the group's roots. Titles include "The Beat That's Right", "Wild & Free", "Love MIA", "Sunglasses", "Something You Said", and "Time Will Heal A Broken Heart". ✨✧ Jackie De ShannonMe About You/Laurel Canyon/Put A Little Love In The Heart/To Be Free ... CD
Imperial/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four classic albums from Jackie DeShannon – all in a single set! First up is Me About You – sophisticated Jackie at her best – working with great arrangements from Jack Nitzsche and Nick DeCaro – both cats from the California scene we can really trust for "cut-above" pop work like this – music that goes way past the simple sounds of DeShannon's start – into cool adult territory that really makes the album great. Jackie's vocals are surprisingly soulful in the setting – even more so than before – and the tunes include lots of gems, including versions of Van Dyke Parks' "High Coin", John Sebastian's "Didn't Want To Have To Do It", and Tim Hardin's "Baby Close Its Eyes". Also includes "I Keep Wanting You", "Me About You", and "Nicole". Next is Laurel Canyon – heady work from Jackie DeShannon's later years in 60s pop – an album with themes and styles that go way beyond her earlier recordings – as you might guess from the hip Laurel Canyon reference in the title! Jackie's working here in a mode that's much more strongly in a singer-songwriter style than before – with arrangements and backings that are a lot more organic, and less pop-tuned than ever – almost in a Laura Nyro approach on some numbers. As usual, a good portion of the tracks were written by Jackie herself – including "Holly Would", "Come & Stay With Me", "LA", "Too Close", and "Laurel Canyon" – and the album also features a few well chosen tracks by other writers too, like "Bitter Honey" by Paul Williams & Roger Nichols, "I Got My Reason" by Barry White, and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" by Smokey Robinson. Put A Little Love In Your Heart is quite possibly the last great hit from singer Jackie DeShannon – an album built around the righteous spirit of the title track – filled with really wonderful original tunes penned by Jackie and soul singer Jimmy Holiday! The album may well be the best to explore the space between pop and soul that often characterized Jackie's work – and the overall sound is somewhat similar to some of Dusty Springfield's best pop/soul work from the same stretch. 10 of the album's 12 tracks are originals by Holiday and DeShannon – all set to soaring orchestrations by James Langeford, which often have a pronounced influence from the sound of Atlantic Records in the late 60s! Titles include "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "You Are The Real Thing", "River Of Love", "Movin", "You Can Come To Me", "You Have A Way With Me", and "I Let Go Completely". To Be Free is an interesting little record – with kind of a crossover California soul feel overall – recorded with Rene Hall arrangements that echo a few rootsy modes at times, mixed in with fuller orchestrations that step a bit back towards Jackie's earlier years on Imperial – a surprisingly nice blend, with a fresh sound for the 70s. The album features a number of great tracks co-written with Jimmy Holiday – a fellow Imperial talent – and titles include "Mediterranean Sky", "Sooner Or Later", "What Was Your Day Like", "Livin On The Easy Side", "Brighton Hill", and "When Morning Comes Again". A bit smoother than Ben's earlier albums – but a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Ben's voice is still really compelling, and as on his best albums, there's some nice funky grooves in the mix that keep things fresh. Players include Phil Upchurch on bass and guitar, Woody Shaw on trumpet, David Newman and Sonny Seals on saxes, and Richard Tee on organ. Titles include the great instrumental "Let's Make A Deal" – a fast groover with guitar and keyboards riffing away, sounding like some lost jazz funk gem from the Fantasy Records catalog – plus "Beg For It", "Cuban Connection", "Free In America", "New York State Of Mind", and "Feel Your Groove". Four albums from the great Ben Sidran – a mighty hip jazz singer, and a great pianist too! First up is Free In America – a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes messed up in the past, they're much more straightforward here – in ways that make the record really sparkle nicely! Doctor Is In is one of Ben Sidran's biggest records from the 70s – a smooth combination of jazz, fusion, soul, and a bit of New Orleans groove! There's still a very unique feel to Sidran's music here – a sense of personality that really makes the whole thing sparkle – and which keeps the record from sounding too much like anyone else. Grooves are a great mix of jazz and soul elements – in territory that certainly has a 70s LA sort of quality, but which never gets too poppy or commercial – thanks to Ben's vocals, and mostly small combo backings from players who include Phil Upchurch on bass, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Tony Williams on drums. Nick DeCaro adds in a bit of extra strings from time to time – and titles include "Silver's Serenade", "Charlie's Blues", "Be Nice", "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "One Way Grave", and "See You On The Other Side". Little Kiss In The Night is one of our all-time favorites from the great Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong dose of fusion in the mix! The grooves here are somehow a bit sharper than the few Sidran records before – with a quality that almost reminds us of Fantasy Records soul from the mid 70s, or some of the best jazz-tinged R&B sets of the time – all linked back nicely to Ben's rootsier elements from the start. As always, Sidran's got some really top-shelf musicians on board to help him find his groove – including Phil Woods on alto sax, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and Arthur Adams on guitar – and arrangements on many numbers are by Mike Melvoin, who sounds even funkier here than we'd expect. There's a great instrumental on the set called "The Cadillac Kid", which has a nice hard fusion groove – and other cuts include "Face Your Fears", "Doing You", and "Moose The Mooch". Live At Montreux is tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to the more open flow of his Blue Thumb years – with plenty of room not only for Sidran's great vocals, but also from instrumental contributions from Steve Khan on guitar, Mike Mainieri on vibes, and the Brecker Brothers on horns. Titles include "I Remember Clifford", "Eat It", "Song For A Sucker Like You", "Midnight Tango/Walking With The Blues", and "Come Together". CD

An insane classic from one of the wildest funk bands ever! According to reports, George Clinton and the band cut this set in a marathon 48-hour stretch in the studio – working like mad all night and day long, after dropping a motherlode of some mighty fine acid! We don't know if that story's entirely true, but the music on the album certainly backs it up – as it's some of the band's freest, most open-ended, most heavy-jamming work ever recorded! Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really tremendous album from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that stands as one of his greatest statements from the 70s! The record is a wonderful example of Gil's work in two different styles – sweet mellow jazzy soul, and harder heavier protest poetry – the latter from his roots as a writer in touch with the streets, and the former part of a brilliant new direction that he was taking on the Flying Dutchman label. Side one features classic jazzy tracks recorded with Brian Jackson – like "Free Will", "The Middle Of Your Days", "Speed Kills", and "Did You Hear What They Said?". Side two moves over to a much sparer sound – and has Gil reciting some of his poetry with very heavy percussion, and a very righteous approach. The wisdom and knowledge of those pieces is a perfect example of the kinds of issues that were haunting black America in the early 70s – especially on the tracks "No Knock", "The King Alfred Plan", and "Sex Education: Ghetto Style". CD features 11 stunning bonus tracks – alternates of songs on the album, and some very cool "breakdown" tracks as well! CD

Gil Scott-Heron at his early best and most revolutionary – circa Small Talk At 125th And Lenox, Pieces Of Man and Free Will, plus a host of rare and unreleased material – the complete Flying Dutchman Masters in a masterfully compiled anthology! Rather than simply collecting the original Flying Dutchman albums into a box set, BGP does a terrific job here of organizing it by style. Disc One (Songs) focuses on the soul-based songcraft – while Disc Two (Poetry, Jazz & Blues) features the strident jazzy poetry that inspired most hip hop and spoken word to come. Disc Three features alternate takes and rarities – all of which have never been officially released before now! The set includes every recording that Gil made for Flying Dutchman that's known to exist – and if you're keeping tally, that's all of the tracks from the above-named classic albums – plus the great "Artificialness" from Pretty Purdie's Stand By Me record with Gil on vocals – and the surviving alternate takes. Even if you have all of the original albums, the set is worth picking up for the bonus material and the thick, nicely done booklet of notes and photo – which really adds some top notch historical perspective. 51 tracks on 3CDs: "Lady Day And John Coltrane", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "Whitey On The Moon", "Free Will", "Pieces Of Man", "Brother", "Ain't No New Thing", "The Needle's Eye", "The Get Out OF The Ghetto Blues", "Evolution (And Flashback)", "Billy Green Is Dead", "The Middle Of Your Day", "Save The Children", "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul?" and many more. A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

Drummer Max Roach was really on fire during the 80s – a time when the Black Saint/Soul Note label gave his music more exposure than ever, and allowed Max to try out so many great concepts with a new sense of freedom! Roach first came up during the early years of bebop, exploded with righteous power in the 60s, and sometimes never got the presence he deserved in the 70s – when some of his best work was only recorded in Japan. These records really correct that lack of wider presentation of Max's music – and the titles here show an especially strong focus on expanding the spiritual ideas that Roach recorded with his bass-less Quartet in the decade before. The quartet appears strongly on the albums Pictures In A Frame, Scott Free, and In The Light – which feature Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Odean Pope on tenor, and Calvin Hill on piano. Most of these players show up on the other albums too – including Easy Winners and Live At Vielharmonie Munich – with his Double Quartet, which takes the Quartet and expands it with a string quartet. The set also features the beautiful It's Christmas Again – a nicely spiritual set with work from Bridgewater, Pope, Tony Scott, Lee Konitz, and Tyrone Brown. 6 albums in all – each in tiny LP-styled sleeves!
