CompassCompass Rises ... LP
Schoolhouse/Frederiksberg, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $52.99 54.99
A record that manages to effortlessly tie together its horns and Fender Rhodes – wrapping them up in a seductive groove that makes the album a gem all the way through! The group are an obscure one, but they've got a very unique, individual vibe on this rare early 70s set – working with very heavy contributions on tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet from Rick Lawn – who also wrote most of the tunes on the set – next to the Rhodes of Joel Chase, a really fantastic player who's graced with a strong sense of space and timing that really opens up the sound! Bassist Tom Ives is great too – and the rest of the quintet includes drums from Al Colone and congas from Ken Parmele – on titles that include "Cleanin Up", "Sunflower", "Waltz For Barbara", "Schizoid", "Sour Cream", and "Pharoah's Thing". ✨✧ Milt WardMilt Ward & Virgo Spectrum ... LP
Twin Quest/Frederiksberg, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a spiritual jazz session from trumpeter Milt Ward – a relatively obscure player who worked on the same 70s Boston underground scene as Stanton Davis – a friend of Milt's and a good comparison to the sound of this one rare album! The vibe is a bit like that of Davis' Ghetto Mysticism – spiritual jazz, but delivered with a soulful focus throughout – tunes that still have plenty of room for strong solos, but also groove a bit too – all instrumental, and served up by a tremendous lineup that includes the great Carlos Garnett on tenor, plus Bill Pierce on soprano and tenor, Delmar Brown on electric and acoustic piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Ignacio Mena on percussion! There's a very special spirit to the record – a set that's not just rare, but a rare breed of wonderful – with titles that include "The Charle", "Virgo Paths", "Juneboy's Frismas", "Mr Cheese", and "Morning Glories". ✨✧ AdmasSons Of Ethiopia ... LP
Frederiksberg, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really cool Ethiopian record, but not the sort you might expect – as most of the instrumentation here is heavy on electric elements, which includes a fair bit of 80s keyboards, synth, and drum machine lines! The group were actually exiles, living in the Washington, DC area during the early 80s – and the record is almost a fusion of Ethio roots with more familiar American styles – a bit like the work that Mulatu created during his early time in the US, but with a very different vibe! There's lead vocals on one track, but most of the set is instrumental – and filled with plenty of sweet keyboard lines and guitar riffs – jazzy, electro, and plenty charming – on titles that include "Kalatashew Waga", "Anchi Bale Game", "Tez Alegn Yetintu", "Bahta's Highlfie", and "Samba Shegitu". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with a very big booklet of notes – telling the unique legacy of the group!)
