Frank Zappa/Mothers Of InventionBurnt Weeny Sandwich ... LP
Bizarre/Reprise, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99
A burnt weeny sandwich from Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention – and a record that shows just how far they'd come in just a few short years! In a way, the record feels almost like a summation of all the best ideas that Frank had come up with in the studio – some serious musical compositions, mixed with pop music parody, and still a touch of that sharper wit from the initial records – yet all delivered with a dexterity that nobody would have expected from The Mothers at the start! And if anything, there's almost more care and sensitivity here at times – especially on some of the piano parts – showing that Zappa's way more than just a freak letting his flag fly – and has plenty of ears for sounds that go way beyond his scene. Titles include "WPLJ", "Igor's Boogie", "Aybe Sea", "Holiday In Berlin Full Blown", "Valarie", and "The Little House I Used To Live In". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Bizarre pressing. Cover has light ring wear.)

✨✧ Frank Zappa/Mothers Of InventionAbsolutely Free ... LP
Verve, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most mindblowing pop culture pastiches of the 60s – a record that's as absolutely mad as it is absolutely free – and proof that a whole new generation of musicians like Zappa were using the studio like an instrument itself! This is work that could have never existed away from record – as the mix of sounds, moods, and music comes together with a maddening frenzy – hardly the languid speed you'd expect from the early years of hippiedom – and instead, an inspirational stream of styles and ideas delivered with trademark Zappa dexterity and wit! The album's divided into two long passages – "Absolutely Free" and "The MOI American Pageant" – with tracks that include "Plastic People", "Amnesia Vivace", "The Duke Regains His Chops", "America Drinks & Goes Home", "Son Of Suzy Creamcheese", "Status Back Baby", and "The Duke Of Prunes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, surface wear, aging, split seam, and price sticker remnants in back.)

✨✧ Frank Zappa/Mothers Of InventionUncle Meat ... LP
Reprise/Bizarre, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing movie in sound – supposedly music (and more) that was going to be used in a film project, issued to the public while Zappa was trying to raise money for production! The album's one of the most tripped-out studio efforts to date from the group – loads of overdubbing, and wonderfully complicated instrumentation – with some especially great keyboards from Don Preston and Ian Underwood, whose keys alone almost preface the future of fusion – while, at the same time, display some key links to 20th century avant music as well! Vocals are dropped in at just the right time, but the instrumental interplay is what really makes the record special – over many short tracks that include "Mr Green Genes", "We Can Shoot You", "Dog Breath Variations", "Sleeping In A Jar", "The Legend Of The Golden Arches", "Uncle Meat", "Cruising For Burgers", and "King Kong" in many variations. LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Bizarre pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeves. Cover has a small hole near the Bizarre logo, splits at the opening, light ring & edge wear.)

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention200 Motels ... LP
United Artists, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
A pretty striking little record in the Frank Zappa catalog – the double-length soundtrack for the movie of the same name, and a set that explodes the Zappa palette of sound even further than some of his previous albums! A number of tracks feature a full studio orchestra – sounding as if they were lined up to perform a conventional Hollywood film score, but somehow tricked into working with Frank when he showed up on the podium to conduct the proceedings! Other tunes echo more of the Mothers Of Invention material, but with shorter selections, and lots of twists and turns along the way – all of which make the whole record this really mad pastiche of songs, sounds, and sonic interplay. Titles include "This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich", "Redneck Eats", "She Painted Her Face", "Janet's Big Dance Number", "Daddy Daddy Daddy", "The Girl's Dream", "A Nun Suit Painted On Some Old Boxes", and "Mystery Roach". Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of InventionOne Size Fits All ... LP
DiscReet, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
Frank Zappa's got some fantastic fusion touches on this sweet little set from the 70s – thanks to keyboards and a bit of vocals from George Duke, heavy drums from Chester Thompson, and even some brief help from Johnny Guitar Watson! The set's still got a very Zappa-esque feel, but it's clear he's also letting Duke stretch his wings a bit too as there's parts of the record that almost echo the style of some of George's more far-out recordings for MPS. The balance is great – and one that makes the album a lot more soulful at points than we're used to hearing from Zappa. Titles include "Florentine Pogen", "Can't Afford No Shoes", "Inca Roads", "Po-Jama People", "Evelyn A Modified Dog", and "San Ber'Dino". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram reissue from 2015, still sealed with hype sticker.)

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of InventionWhisky A Go Go 1968 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Zappa, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99 39.99
Mindblowing music from a really legendary evening – June 23, 1968 – a date on which Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention promised to deliver five hours of unprecedented sounds at the Whiskey A Go Go! The music is a mindblowing mix of jazz and rock, years before fusion – and with the Mothers and Frank jamming together effortlessly, and really showing just how much improvisation was at the core of their sound – even though sometimes the whole thing might come across as being carefully planned out in advance! The whole night was recorded with the intention of a live release, but much of the music has never seen the light of day – save for a handful of tracks that came out on other releases over the years. 2LP set features key highlights from the performance – titles that include "Bust His Head", "Tiny Sick Tears Jam", "Hungry Freaks Daddy", "Help I'm A Rock/Transylvania Boogie", "The Duke (take 2)", "King Kong", "My Boyfriend's Back", "The Whip", "Brown Shoes Don't Make It", and "Khaki Sack". Zappa, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning little package that goes way beyond the original Fillmore East concert from 1971 – as this set features the full recordings from that show, including the legendary encore with John Lennon and Yoko Ono – plus the Rainbow Theatre concert, a whole other concert set of material from Pennsylvania, and all sorts of additional and rare tracks too! The package is massive – a great document of the non-stop creative genius that Frank Zappa had going with the group at the start of the 70s – presented here with new remastering by Eddie Kramer and Craig Parker, plus very detailed liner notes and other information too. Bizarre/Reprise, 1971. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Frank Zappa & The Mothers, live at the Fillmore East – showing the world they've got plenty of greatness to offer away from the studio! The band here is super-tight – with the ferocity of Chunga's Revenge, but still enough room between the jamming for some mad bits of dialog and vocals – which are then offset by great keyboards and saxes from Ian Underwood, electronics from Don Preston, and heavy drums from Aynsley Dunbar! There's a focus to the sound of the group here that really draws together all the strands from the previous few years – and titles include "The Mud Shark", "What Kind Of Girl Do You Think We Are", "Willie The Pimp", "Happy Together", "Lonesome Electric Turkey", and "Tears Began To Fall". Mothers Of Invention (Frank Zappa)Freak Out ... CD
Verve/Zappa, 1966. Used ... $6.99
A fabulous furry freakout from Frank Zappa – the start of a legendary run in the late 60s – and a record that is still as mindblowing now as it was all those many years back! There's a deadpan quality to the vocals that's unlike anything other groups were trying for at the time – a snotty aspect that's often forgotten amidst all the celebrations of Zappa's hippiedom, but which really makes the record stand out from the pack – giving it a kind of darkness that's a wonderful change from some of the too-earnest psych or folk rock elements of the period. Music is great too – and a lot more simple than in later years – a really tight blend of garage and psych that furthers the almost punky quality of the record. Titles include "The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet", "Motherly Love", "I Ain't Got No Heart", "Hungry Freaks Daddy", "Wowie Zowie", "You Didn't Try To Call Me", "Any Way The Wind Blows", and "I'm Not Satisfied". Mothers Of Invention (Frank Zappa)We're Only In It For The Money ... LP
Verve, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $18.99
An early masterpiece from Frank Zappa – one of those records that looks like it's going to be a big ol' mess when you first see the cover – but which turns out to be a carefully calculated act of madness in the end! The Mothers have all their freeform freaky brilliance intact here – still some of the snide edges of the early years, but also really learning their craft as well – and stretching out under Zappa's direction into a pastiche of songs that explore the anxieties and inanities of late 60s America! Frank produced the whole thing with an approach that others wouldn't reach for years – shifting styles, instrumentation, and sound sources with effortless ease – over tracks that include "Hot Poop", "The Idiot Bastard", "Lonely Little Girl", "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance", "Harry You're A Beast", "Mom & Dad", "Who Needs The Peace Corps", and "Flower Punk". Bizarre/Reprise, 1970. Near Mint- ... $24.99 29.99
A silly cover and title, but one of the most powerful records so far from Frank Zappa – a set that focuses the mad energy of The Mothers into a groove that really packs a lot of punch! The lineup here is filled with key talents – including Don Preston on organ and electronics, Sugarcane Harris on violin, Lowell George on rhythm guitar, Ian Underwood on alto, and Bunk Gardner on tenor – all players who are more than willing to go to the farther edges of Zappa's consciousness – yet also have the musical chops to make the whole thing come together beautifully! There's a bit more hard rock than some of Zappa's jazz leanings in this set – and titles include "March & Dwarf Nebula", "Didja Get Any Onya", "Directly From My Heart To You", "Toads Of The Short Forest", and "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue".
