Frank Zappa200 Motels ... CD
United Artists/Ryko, 1971. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
A pretty striking little record in the Frank Zappa catalog – the double-length soundtrack for the movie of the same name, and a set that explodes the Zappa palette of sound even further than some of his previous albums! A number of tracks feature a full studio orchestra – sounding as if they were lined up to perform a conventional Hollywood film score, but somehow tricked into working with Frank when he showed up on the podium to conduct the proceedings! Other tunes echo more of the Mothers Of Invention material, but with shorter selections, and lots of twists and turns along the way – all of which make the whole record this really mad pastiche of songs, sounds, and sonic interplay. Titles include "This Town Is A Sealed Tuna Sandwich", "Redneck Eats", "She Painted Her Face", "Janet's Big Dance Number", "Daddy Daddy Daddy", "The Girl's Dream", "A Nun Suit Painted On Some Old Boxes", and "Mystery Roach". CD
(Out of print. Includes a fold-out poster!)

✨✧ Frank ZappaLumpy Gravy ... LP
Verve, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $34.99
Amazing sounds from Frank Zappa – and a record that showed the world that he was also one hell of an arranger too! The album's got all the offbeat, tripped-out qualities that you'd expect from late 60s Zappa – but at times, it's also got this tightness that's really amazing – almost as if Frank's showing the world that he can easily do the same things as the studio wizards of LA pop – but chooses to keep most of his efforts on the wrong side of the tracks! There's plenty of larger backings at points – handled by some of the cream of the crop of the LA studio and jazz scene – but other moments are pretty darn raw, and have a gritty, almost homemade sound collage feel. An early masterpiece from Frank Zappa – one of those records that looks like it's going to be a big ol' mess when you first see the cover – but which turns out to be a carefully calculated act of madness in the end! The Mothers have all their freeform freaky brilliance intact here – still some of the snide edges of the early years, but also really learning their craft as well – and stretching out under Zappa's direction into a pastiche of songs that explore the anxieties and inanities of late 60s America! Frank produced the whole thing with an approach that others wouldn't reach for years – shifting styles, instrumentation, and sound sources with effortless ease – over tracks that include "Hot Poop", "The Idiot Bastard", "Lonely Little Girl", "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance", "Harry You're A Beast", "Mom & Dad", "Who Needs The Peace Corps", and "Flower Punk". The set brings together some of the best of that enterprise – and features live performances from 1969 through 1984 – all mastered by Bernie Grundman, with sound that really made most of the Zappa bootlegs on the market obsolete! Titles include "The Florida Airport Tape", "Sharleena", "Nanook Rubs It", "The Evil Prince", "You Call That Music", "King Kong", "Dickie's Such An Asshole", "Cosmic Debris", "Montana", "The Torture Never Stops", and "Plastic People". Bizarre/Zappa (Germany), 1971. New Copy 3LPs (reissue)... $53.99 59.99
Frank Zappa & The Mothers, live at the Fillmore East – showing the world they've got plenty of greatness to offer away from the studio! The band here is super-tight – with the ferocity of Chunga's Revenge, but still enough room between the jamming for some mad bits of dialog and vocals – which are then offset by great keyboards and saxes from Ian Underwood, electronics from Don Preston, and heavy drums from Aynsley Dunbar! There's a focus to the sound of the group here that really draws together all the strands from the previous few years – and titles include "The Mud Shark", "What Kind Of Girl Do You Think We Are", "Willie The Pimp", "Happy Together", "Lonesome Electric Turkey", and "Tears Began To Fall". Expanded 3LP version – with two more records' worth of material added to the original single-LP set – including the encore with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and the original "Billy The Mountain" – plus an album side of solos in "King Kong"! Even includes the single tracks "Tears Began To Fall" and "Junier Mintz Boogie". LP, Vinyl record album

A set recorded late in the year of 1971, and one that features the final lineup of the group with Flo & Eddie – presented here in an expanded 3LP set with a huge amount of material! The concert is legendary – in that Zappa was pushed off stage by the crowd, which led to a real rethinking of things in months to come – but until that moment, things are totally top shelf – on titles that include "Pain In The Ass", "Pound For A Brown", "Super Grease", "Zanti Serenade", "Peaches En Regalia", Cruising For Burgers", "Sharleena", "Wonderful Wino", "King Kong", "That's Your Tough Luck", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and the prophetic "Shove It Right In". The package is massive – a great document of the non-stop creative genius that Frank Zappa had going with the group at the start of the 70s – presented here with new remastering by Eddie Kramer and Craig Parker, plus very detailed liner notes and other information too. The first 2CDs feature all Zappa music – including some never-issued tracks pulled from Frank's vaults, mixed with other key cuts that really illustrate his genius – titles that include "The Black Page 1 (piano version)", "Call Any Vegetable (excerpts)", "Happy Together", "Scumbag", "You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here", "Any Way The Wind Blows", "Motherly Love", "Mother People", "Firebird Suite Finale", "Road Ladies", "FZ On Varese", "Agency Man (studio version)", "G Spot Tornado", "Fembot In A Whet T-Shirt", "Mo's Vacation", and "Valley Girl" – plus related cuts "No Longer Umpire" by Alice Cooper, "The Captain's Fat Theresa Shoes" by The GTOs, and "Every Time I See You" by The Heartbreakers. CD3 features the whole new score for the film, including bits from the film – composed by John Frizzell with help from Nick Cimity and Davit Stal. Also includes more Zappa cuts that include "Watermelon In Easter Hay (live)", "Get Whitey", "Nap Time", "Overture", and "Envelopes (1983 original vinyl mix)". CD

"Mostly" live genius from Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention – recorded at The Roxy with some studio additions – and the players include George Duke, Tom Fowler, Ruth Underwood, Walt Fowler, Ralph Humphrey and the other great players from this peak period! It's astonishing stuff – and as strong of a mix of the tightly rock-centric and exploratory/hard fusiony sides of Zappa as you could hope for – shoot, even the stage banter is priceless! Includes "Penguin In Bondage", "Pygmy Twylyte", "Village Of The Sun", "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?", "More Trouble Everyday" and "Be-Bop Tango (Of The Old Jazzmen's Church)" and more. Frank Zappa/Mothers Of InventionUncle Meat ... LP
Reprise/Bizarre, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
An amazing movie in sound – supposedly music (and more) that was going to be used in a film project, issued to the public while Zappa was trying to raise money for production! The album's one of the most tripped-out studio efforts to date from the group – loads of overdubbing, and wonderfully complicated instrumentation – with some especially great keyboards from Don Preston and Ian Underwood, whose keys alone almost preface the future of fusion – while, at the same time, display some key links to 20th century avant music as well! Vocals are dropped in at just the right time, but the instrumental interplay is what really makes the record special – over many short tracks that include "Mr Green Genes", "We Can Shoot You", "Dog Breath Variations", "Sleeping In A Jar", "The Legend Of The Golden Arches", "Uncle Meat", "Cruising For Burgers", and "King Kong" in many variations. A key record in showcasing Frank Zappa's blend of complicated compositions and all-out jamming – that mix of hard rock and serious songwriting that would direct his energy for most of the 70s – yet still pretty darn raw at this point! The album's a live one – with some of the same great spontaneous energy of the Fillmore set, but even less silliness – even amidst the album's longer songs and weirdass lyrics! The set begins with the extended "Billy The Mountain" – definitely a journey in music – then rolls into "Call Any Vegetable", "Eddie Are You Kidding", "Magdalena", and "Dog Breath". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original blue label pressing. Cover has light wear, small split in the top seam, some staple holes at the top left, and a bit of marker at the top right.)

Wonderful stuff from Frank Zappa – a set that still has all the freak-out feel of the early years, yet which also shows a real maturation in his arrangement styles as well! The instrumentation is fantastic – not just great guitar from Frank, but heavy keyboards from George Duke, slide guitar from Tony Duran, raw drums from Aynsley Dunbar, and even some great horn arrangements that bring in a jazzy undercurrent that's mighty nice – almost grounding the free-form energy of the band's impulses with a sophisticated groove that really makes you take them seriously! Titles include the side-long "Big Swifty" – plus "Waka/Jawaka", "Your Mouth", and "It Might Be A One Shot Deal". CD

DiscReet/Barking Pumpkin, 1977. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Frank Zappa live in the 70s – working with a surprisingly hip large ensemble, with all the sharp changes and unusual moments of his classic studio albums! Like some of Zappa's other concert performances, there's an approach that steps a few years back – clearly to please the group coming to hear their favorites, but in a way that also offers up a nice sharpening-up of the music too – especially given that the whole thing's happening live on stage! There's some great jazz help here – horns from The Brecker Brothers, Lou Marini, Ronnie Cuber, and Tom Malone – plus wonderful vibes from Dave Samuels and keyboards from Eddie Jobson – and even a bit of narration from Don Pardo. Titles include "I'm The Slime", "Titties & Beer", "Cruisin For Burgers", "The Illinois Enema Bandit", "Punky's Whips", "Big Leg Emma", and "Sofa". CD

✨✧ Frank Zappa & The MothersOver-Nite Sensation ... CD
Ryko, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Frank Zappa's biggest-selling albums of the early 70s and it's also one of his best ever! Over-Nite Sensation finds Zappa's leftfield weirdness and sly social satire at play within adventurous, but accessible arrangements. It's got some early fusiony bits paired with heavy drums and muscular rock riffs – and it's a hell of a great sound! The songs themselves are sharp, too. If forced to make a list of favorite Zappa songs, it'd certainly include "Camarillo Brillo", which kicks this record off – and other titles include "I'm The Slime", "Montana", "Dinah-Moe Humm", "Zomby Woof", and "Dirty Love". Features keyboards from George Duke and violin from Jean Luc Ponty – plus horns by Ian Underwood, Sal Marquez, Tom Fowler and Bruce Fowler – plus percussion by Ruth Underwood and amazing drums by Ralph Humphrey. Trippy electric fusion from the west coast – a record that features Ponty, who was working with Zappa at the time, playing a set of electric jazz takes on Zappa tunes – with lots of added help from George Duke, who was also working with Zappa too! The set's almost a "birth of fusion" one – with Zappa arrangements that are clearly in a jazz-rock mode – and lots of electric bass, electric piano, and electric violin in the set. Tracks are long, and riff-heavy – and other players include Ernie Watts, Wilton Felder, Buell Neidlinger, and Ian Underwood. Captain BeefheartTrout Mask Replica ... CD
Reprise, 1969. Used ... $14.99
A seminal moment in leftfield music – maybe the crowning achievement of Captain Beefheart, and a landmark collaboration with Frank Zappa as well! Zappa produced, and gave the group plenty of room to stretch out on this double-length set done for his Bizarre Records imprint – which allowed the Captain the kind of freedom that Frank was getting at the time – which meant there was no need for a hit, no need to tone things down, and plenty of patience for all the record's amazing instrumental twists and turns, and Beefheart's madcap sense of humor as well! The Cap sings, and plays saxes and bass clarinet – and the record's got some really incredible guitar work from Zoot Horn Rollo and Antennae Jimmy Semens – really setting the stage for countless other guitarists in years to come. Tracks include "Dachau Blues", "Hair Pie", "Moonlight On Vermont", "Sweet Sweet Bulbs", "China Pig", "My Human Gets Me Blues", and "Dali's Car". CD

Obscure late 70s material from Charleston Grotto – a long-running LA band who prefigured punk attitude with their work in the 60s, and who still sound pretty darn unique here even when the rest of the world was beginning to catch up! The music isn't exactly punk rock, but it's got a similar sense of f-you defiance – lyrics that are hardly going to get any radio play, and an all-attitude presentation that helps propel the group through some of their more offbeat moments – including some more complicated rhythms that almost have these guys hitting the wit of the world of Frank Zappa. Titles include "Back Biting Leeches", "Old Gene", "Sex Drive", "Screaming Cadavers", "Silver Lake", and "Slash My Wrists". CD

Lord BuckleyMost Immaculately Hip Aristocrat ... LP
Straight, 1956. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $16.99
One of the strongest recordings ever made of the mad mad Lord Buckley! The album was issued in the late 60s for Frank Zappa's Straight label – but it features material recorded more than a decade before – at a time when Buckley was still alive, and one of the most bad-rapping comedian's to ever hit a stage. The approach is somewhat freer than some of Buckley's earlier sides – allowing the ersatz comedian a chance to really riff on a variety of subjects – talking with almost a jazz improvisational energy, in the way that made him a big favorite for the beat generation. The overall nature of the record is kind of hard to pin down – as it's not really comedy, just more of a freewheeling spoken session that's a bit jive, a bit beatnik, and plenty darn crazy! Titles include "The Raven", "The King Of Bad Cats", "Governor Slugwell", and "The Hip Einie". LP, Vinyl record album

SWR/Long Hair (France), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
Odin take on two tunes by Frank Zappa here – but the result is very different than most of Zappa's music, given that the group have a sound that's a bit more down to earth, and focused nicely on the interplay between the excellent organ lines on a Hammond 100, and the rest of the guitar, bass, and drums in the quartet! Odin are definitely prog, but they also feel like guys you could just hang out with at a bar, too – impeccable instrumentalists, but also not too full of themselves – just able to jam long and beautifully, while occasionally throwing out the odd lyric to give their tunes a bit of focus. Titles include long takes on the Zappa tunes "King Kong" and "Oh No" – plus the originals "Turnpike Lane" and "Life Is Only". Also features a bonus live take of "Oh No", recorded live in 1972. CD

Jean-Luc Ponty with George DukeJean-Luc Ponty Experience With The George Duke Trio ... LP
Liberty, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A better album than you'd expect – without any of the too-familiar modes of either players' later albums! At the time of this set, George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty were both playing with Frank Zappa – but they're breaking out of the hippie weirdness here to get a bit more serious – working through some long, extended modal grooves that rank with the best MPS work by either player – especially their early recordings! Duke's on electric piano, ringing out in a weird spacey sound, and Ponty's violin is mostly restrained, used to cast waves of sound over the top of the tracks, in a way that works well with Duke's soulful resonant approach. Titles include "Foosh", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Starlight Starbright". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later pressing on PAUSA. Cover has light wear and small splits on the seams.)
