✨✧ Foster Jackson GroupFeel The Spirit (long disco, disco) ... 12-inch
Lonnie, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Spacey, jazzy, and wonderful – an upbeat funky club track that's got as much great instrumentation as it does vocals! The tune soar and skips along on a really bouyant wave – kind of like a more dancefloor-driven approach to the Lonnie Liston Smith groove of earlier years – topped off with some great chorus vocals, and featuring a nice percussion breakdown about halfway through! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Count Basie OrchestraLegend, The Legacy ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1989. Used ... $5.99
The Basie Orchestra pays tribute to their departed Count – and the groove here is every bit the sort you'd expect from the ensemble at their height! Frank Foster's in the lead with the group at this point, and he's definitely back in the Basie bag, after stretching out soulfully on his own in the 70s – guiding players who include Eric Dixon, Danny Turner, and David Glasser on reeds; Sonny Cohn, Byron Stripling, and Mike Williams on trumpets; Bill Hughes, Mel Wanzo, and Clarence Banks on trombones; and rhythm from Carl Ace Carter on piano, Cleveland Eaton on bass, and Duffy Jackson on drums. Carmen Bradford sings a bit, and titles include "Papa Foss", "Bring On The Raindrops", "Katherine The Great", "Whirly Bird", and "The Count Basie Remembrance Suite". CD

✨✧ VariousSoul Of Designer Records (4CD box set) ... CD
Designer/Big Legal Mess, 1960s. New Copy 4CD ... Just Sold Out!
A tremendous legacy in gospel music during the 60s – a crucially important indie from the Memphis scene – and one who recorded really great groups from around the country! Designer were helping shape the sound of modern gospel at the same time as Chess, Savoy, and some of the bigger labels – and doing their work with a similar ear towards some of the more soulful sounds of the secular world – particularly in the way the harmonies and sound of group vocals came together! And despite their name – designer – which might make you think in terms of throwaway fashion – the label has a really classic sound and a rock-solid approach, which makes this overstuffed 4CD set a treasure trove for anyone interested in these key years in gospel music. The set features 101 tracks, in a very cool LP-sized sleeve, complete with an oversized booklet filled with notes and photos – and the collection features work by Foster Brothers, Gospel Songbirds, Twilight Singers, Melody Kings Of Greenwood MS, The Jubilee Hummingbirds, Jackson Trumpeteers, Little Willie Patterson & The Famous South Land Singers, The Shaw Singers, Sister Carrie Daniel, and many many more!
