John FaheyFare Forward Voyagers (Soldier's Choice) ... CD
Takoma (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A wonderful set from the early 70s – a record that has John Fahey opening up even more than before, on three very long tracks that really extend his ideas into a much more open space! The territory is maybe a bit more in the mode of Robbie Basho or Sandy Bull – and the pieces themselves are dedicated to Fahey's guru, Swami Satchidananda – with some of the Eastern elements you might expect! Yet John's longstanding tradition to reworking an American idiom is still strongly in place – maybe just inflected with a new spirit breathed into the nation in the late 60s – and opened up with wonderful interplay on the strings of the guitar. Titles include "When The Fire & Rose Are One", "Thus Krishna On The Battlefield", and "Fare Forward Voyagers". CD

Ayalew MesfinChe Belew (March Forward) ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.98 About January 27, 2023 (delayed)
Rare singles and unreleased tracks from one of the funkiest artists on the 70s scene in Ethiopia – the amazing Ayalew Mesfin – a fantastic talent with a groove that's dying to be heard! Mesfin's music has maybe even more of James Brown groove than some of his funky contemporaries – really sharp rhythms with the guitars, basslines, and everything else coming down on the groove – peppered with horn parts and eerie organ lines, while Ayalew sings in this style that's soulful, but completely unlike any sort of American singer! Instead, the vocals are all inflected and snakey over the top – almost set free from the rhythms, in a way that makes the funky elements sound even funkier as they really ground the whole proceedings next to the otherworldly quality of the lyrics. Titles include "Teregew Nebere", "Wegene", "Ambassel", "Tizitash Zewetir", "Sew Malet Esunew", "Che Belew", "Yetembelel Loga", "Ho Bilo Hedeo", and "Wubalem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Derrick MorganForward March (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really early work from the legendary Derrick Morgan, and a set that was one of the earliest full length sets in the Island Records catalog – the start of a legendary run of Jamaican music, with proof that Morgan was one of the originators who was there at the start! As you might guess from his look on the cover, Derrick is working in a ska-based mode on the set – but he's also drawing plenty from American soul for inspiration too – wonderful vocals that float in a dreamy way over the tight-stepping rhythms in the tunes! There's a few cuts that feature duets with Patsy Todd – and titles include "The Hop", "Look Before You Leap", "Last Chance", "Don't You Worry", "Blazing Fire", "Housewife's Choice", "Don't Be A Fool", and "It's True My Darling". CD features a massive amount of bonus tracks – 46 titles added to the original record, some from The Best Of Derrick Morgan, many of which are new to CD too. Titles include "Real Ring Ding", "Revenge", "Try Me", "Greedy Gal", "Don't Say", "Horse Dead Cow Fat", "Sunday Morning", "Gypsy Woman", "Be Still", "Corner Stone", "Sail On", "Tell It To Me", "Loving Baby", and lots lots more! ✨✧ SectionForward Motion ... LP
Warner, 1973. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer second set from Section – a combo made up of key 70s studio players like Danny Kootch Kortchmar and drummer Craig Doerge! The style here is partly fusion, partly instrumental rock – but never too jamming overall, and recorded with a good spacious sound. Because of the restraint the group uses, there's a tight, crisp sound to the record that results in some solidly grooving numbers – recorded with a bit of a Southern California flourish in the production, but never as slick as the super-huge records these players would work on in years to come! Titles include "Smilin Ed", "El Mirador Bolero", "A Kind OF Albatross", "One Drum", "Bullet Train", "Forward Motion", "Baby Lame", "Get Down Piltdown", "The Garden Of Ryoanji", and "Burning Bush". ✨✧ Chris BellLooking Forward – The Roots Of Big Star ... CD
Omnivore, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the Memphis sounds the birthed the first two Big Star albums – music that was recorded by Chris Bell at the Ardent Studios in a variety of guises, most of them pointing directly forward to his genius to come! And yet there's already plenty of genius here – in the guitars, vocals, production, and songwriting – which, like Big Star, are mindblowingly beyond what most of Memphis – and most of the US scene – was doing at the time. The groups here include Rock City and Icewater – names under which most of the tracks were recorded – and the set features some material that's been issued before, mostly on decades-later projects – mixed with six more previously-unissued tracks, and all tied together with a set of notes that really gets at the complicated legacy going on here. Bell's the clear star on most tracks, but also gets lots of help from compatriots who include Steve Rhea on guitar and drums, Tom Eubanks on bass and vocals, Jody Stephens on drums, and Terry Manning on drums, bass, and keyboards. Titles include "The Reason", "Shine On Me", "Try Again (movie mix)", "Think It's Time To Say Goodbye", "All I See Is You", "My Life Is Right", "Feeling High", "The Wind Will Cry For Me", "Lovely Lady", "I Lost A Love", "Sunshine", and "Sunday Organ". AquakultreDon't Trip ... CD
Forward, 2022. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A damn great record from Aquakulture – and a set that's way more of an R&B album than we might have expected – fleshed-out, fully formed, and with a sense of tracks and timing that really makes for a great flow al the way through! There's a lot of guests on the record, and while we might almost even say that they get in the way a bit – the timing of the record always comes back nicely to the role of its leader, who may well have what it takes to become a shining star in the mainstream in the next few years! The set's definitely got inspiration from soul classics of years past, but is completely fresh and very much its own – with titles that include "It's All Good", "Milk & Honey", "I Can Wait", "Getting Close", "You Got Feets", "Hitwoman", "Magic", and "Lunch". ✨✧ FallDragnet (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Step Forward/Cherry Red (UK), 1979. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the boldest early statements from the legendary Fall – a set in which all their energy and mad tunecraft really comes together, and forever put the group on the map! There's a sense of song structure here, but still plenty of noise and weird bits – music that really shows just how much the leftfield landscape can change, a few short years after punk – and open up not only to sonic experimentation, but also the kind of well-penned, cut-up lyrics that made Mark E Smith one of the best writers of his generation! The whole thing's great – still as powerful today as it was in 1979 – and titles include "Muzorewi's Daughter", "Choc-Stock", "Spectre Vs Rector", "Put Away", "Dice Man", "Printhead", and "Psykick Dancehall". This 3CD set is incredible – as CD1 features bonus tracks that include "Rowche Rumble", "In My Area", "Firey Jack", "2nd Dark Age", "Psykick Dancehall No 2", and alternates of the "Rowche Rumble" single sessions. CD2 features a 13 track live set recorded in Retford in 1979 – and CD3 features 11 more live tracks, recorded in Los Angeles in 1979. CD

AaliyahOne In A Million ... LP
Blackground, 1996. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
The second album from Aaliyah, and a huge step forward from the first – shifting both away from production by R Kelly, and towards a more adult approach that really has the singer coming across as a mature solo artist on her own! This time around, Timbaland handles much of the key production, and Missy Elliott plays a key role too – and both appear on the record as well, although it's always clear that the leading lady is the very strong main attraction. Slick Rick guests on a great remake of the Marvin Gaye classic "Got To Give It Up", big singles include "One In A Million" and "If Your Girl Only Knew" – and other tracks include "Hot Like Fire", "The One I Gave My Heart To", "Giving You More", "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" and "Choosey Lover (Old School/New School)". George Adams/Don Pullen QuartetDecisions ... CD
Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
One of those key records that has George Adams and Don Pullen reinventing expectations of jazz for the 80s – both musicians with plenty of ear for the outside, but also coming back home with a well-rounded, deeply-rooted approach that's crucial in taking the American jazz legacy another step forward! Like some of their similar contemporaries, who could also be avant at times, and straight at others – Adams and Pullen have no concern with setting themselves in one camp or another – and not only flesh out the spirit of the record with both of those aspects of their playing, but also have some surprisingly bluesy undercurrents at times. The group features George Adams on tenor, Don Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – and titles include "Decisions", "Triple Over Time", "I Could Really For You", "Message Urgent", and "Trees & Grass & Things". AirAir Song ... CD
Why Not (UK), 1975. Used ... $6.99 9.99
A tremendous album from Air – recorded in their native Chicago, but one of the landmark 70s sessions on Japan's Why Not label! The trio is in wonderful formation here – very focused, with a sharpness that you don't always get in some of their other recordings – a perfect balance between the reeds of Henry Threadgill, bass of Fred Hopkins, and drums of Steve McCall! There's a tightness here that we really love – a bold sense of power that takes the AACM tradition, and fuses it with more of a 70s spiritual jazz approach at times – still experimental enough to live up to Air's reputation, but with occasional rhythmic elements that really push things forward. The album only features 4 tracks – but all of them are long, and stepped in soul – with titles that include "The Great Body Of The Riddle Or Where Where The Dodge Boys When My Clay Started To Slide", "Untitled Tango", and "Dance Of The Beast". Dennis Alcapone & LizzySoul To Soul – DJ's Choice (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
A fantastic classic early dee jay set from the Jamaican scene – a record that not only showcase the burgeoning talents of the young Dennis Alcapone, but also features a fair bit of duets with Lizzy (Delroy Petgrave) – all at a level that really helps move the style forward! At times, there's plenty of echoes of older rocksteady soul in the rhythms, but the presentation is definitely more 70s overall – especially in the edge that Dennis brings to his vocals, which reflect some of the changing times on the scene. Titles include "DJ's Choice", "The Funky Tang", "Picture On The Wall", "Engine Engine Number Nine", and "Wake Up Jamaica" by Dennis Alcapone – plus "Cry Tough", "The Right Song", and "Ba Ba Ri Ba Skank" by Lizzy & Dennis. Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Beautifully sweet and jazzy from the lovely Isabelle Antena – recording here under her own name, but still very much in the mode of the French trio from which she emerged! The record actually came about during the later years of Antena – at a time when the group was still recording sporadically, and still working very much in the spirit of the bossa and jazz styles of their debut. On this set, Isabelle steps forward a bit more as a lead singer, and the overall groove shows a bit more of a love of soul – blended together here with the jazz influences in a way that's very similar to the best side of Sade in her early years, but also handled here with a leaner, more personal indie style. There's a great 80s pop vibe running through the set – one that makes for some nicely catchy numbers, as well as a few dancefloor mis-steps! Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
The UK's Edward Ball famously rose up as part of The Television Personalities – but before and after that famous group, he had plenty of other influence too – as you'll hear in this massive collection of non-TP-related work! Most of the material is from the 80s, and from that time after Ball left Television Personalities – first to famously work as leader of The Times, a very hip mod-styled group who brought forward the 60s ethos of The Action and Creation, but with a leaner, more 80s-oriented vibe. As with his other work, there's always a smartness to Ball's approach – an ability to make a great tune come off effortlessly, often with a nice dose of wink and wit – as you'll also hear here in work from O Level, Love Corporation, Teenage Filmstars, and a few solo cuts too. The package features a hefty 61 tracks in all, with very detailed notes – and runs up to include a few later 90s titles as well. CD

Bar-KaysToo Hot To Stop/Flying High On Your Love ... CD
Mercury/Superbird (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A pair of Mercury Records gems from the Bar-Kays – back to back in a single set! First up is Too Hot To Stop – a pivotal album from The Bar-Kays – a key post-Stax set, but one that's still very firmly grounded in Memphis funk! The groove definitely shows a bit more polish than before – the same sort of shift the Ohio Players made after moving to Mercury Records – but as with the Players at their best, there's still plenty of sharp edges and deeply funky moments on the record – and if anything, the shift has really given The Bar-Kays a way to evolve their sound past some of the heavier modes of the early days, without losing any of the appeal of their groove! Some cuts have some great keyboards – almost producing a spacey funk feel at points – and titles include "Too Hot To Stop (part 1)", "You're So Sexy", "Cozy", "Spellbound", "Whitehouseorgy", and the nice mellow track "Summer Of Our Love". Flying High is a killer too – a great step forward for The Bar-Kays – an album that actually has them taking on a few mellower moments, amidst the heavy funk you might expect – yet all without softening their groove at all! The album's very much in the best spirit of the group's Mercury debut – still recorded in Memphis, with production that's tight, but never uptight – enough to firmly put the group at the top of the funk superstar scene of the mid 70s, yet never sell out the rich Memphis groove that first got them going! Titles include "You Can't Run Away", "Let's Have Some Fun", "Can't Keep My Hands Off You", "Whatever It Is", and "Shut the Funk Up". CD

Verve, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 24.99
Jon Batiste is looking mighty righteous on the cover, and he's sounding mighty righteous within – imbued with a new spirit of consciousness from the events of 2020, which brings a whole new sort of focus to his music – and makes for an album that's every bit a soul set as it is a jazz record! Jon sings on every track, with this raspy power that pushes the rest of the music forward very strongly – igniting the proceedings with the kind of fire you'd hope for, given the album's dedication to "the dreamers, seers, griots, and truth tellers who refuse to let us fully descend into madness". Batiste can definitely add himself to that list – as can guests who include Zadie Smith, Hot 8 Brass Band, PJ Morton, and Trombone Shorty – on titles that include "Cry", "Boy Hood", "Movement 11", "Show Me The Way", "We Are", "Tell The Truth", "Sing", "Until", "Mavis", and "Whatchutalkinbout". BB BlunderWorker's Playtime (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A really surprising step forward for two members of the legendary group Blossom Toes – guitarist Brian Godding and bassist Brian Belshaw – both musicians who were already blowing the scene away in their previous group, but who here expand their sound with a whole range of influences they'd just picked up! One of those is the voice of Julie Driscoll, who sings on a few tracks here with Godding – and another is some jazz elements they'd absorbed in the Centipede group of Keith Tippett – carried off here by guest work from Mark Charig on trumpet, Nick Evans on trombone, and even some piano from Brian Auger! Yet it's clear that Belshaw and Godding are having more than enough fun experimenting on their own with drummer Kevin Westlake – and there's an open, creative style to the record that really keeps things interesting throughout – and moves past the guitar-based modes that were the Blossom Toes stock in trade. Titles include "Rocky Yagbag", "Seed", "Moondance", "Rise", "Lost Horizons", "You're So Young", "Sticky Living", and "New Day". 2CD version features loads of bonus tracks and rare material – including "Square Dance", "Snippet With Tippett", "Come On Eyes", "Black Crow's Nest", "Freedom", "When I was In The Country", "Backstreet", "Waltz", "Earache", and "Hard Day's Night" – plus BBC live recordings of "Sticky Living" and "Go Have Yourself A Good Time". Things are getting slightly more complicated for the Bee Gees here – but we mean that in a good way! The vocals are superb – soaring forth with this unique sort of majesty, and light years away from their 70s disco pop styles – and the backings are a strange mix of rootsy and orchestral – making for a very odd juxtaposition that really seems to push the whole thing forward brilliantly! There's nobody else like the Bee Gees at this point in their career – a possible acquired taste, but one that's got you hooked once you get it! Mario Biondi looks a bit angelic on the cover, but his vocals are still nicely down to earth – that wonderfully raspy charm that made us love his music right from the start, and which makes Mario one of the key folks to carry forward the legacy of older jazz singers like Mark Murphy or Mose Allison! Part of that legacy is heard here in remakes of classic Blue Note tunes – but there's also plenty of Biondi's own touches as well – partly in the original songs he brings to the date, but also in the work with Italian groups like the High Five Quintet and Fabrizio Bosso Spiritual Jazz Trio – not to mention his own group, led by keyboardist Massimo Greco – and work on two tracks by Incognito too! With all that instrumental talent on board, the album's a jazzy delight throughout – and titles include "Jeannine", "Paradise", "No Show", "Cantaloupe Island", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Give Our Love Another Chance", "Dream For Two", "Sunny Days", and "Simili". Ran BlakeFilm Noir ... CD
Novus/International Phonograph, 1980. Used Gatefold ... $18.99
One of the most evocative albums we've ever heard from pianist Ran Blake – a set that's got all the sharp edges of some of his most adventurous solo work, but one that also has Ran working in a few different settings, often with a very poetic feel! The set's not a hokey retro-crime record – as you might fear from the title (and countless later jazz albums that evoke that aesthetic) – and although Blake's working through melodies from older films, plus a few original numbers in the same spirit, his presentation is completely unique – and explosively personal throughout! His own piano is tremendous – blocks of sound and runs of notes that are extremely imaginative, and which flow forward from the same dark spirit we love on Blake's other recordings. And they're often balanced with shifting contributions from other musicians – players who include John Heiss on flute, Paul Meyers on bass, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Daryl Lowrey on alto and soprano sax – all of whom make some great additions to the set. Titles include a nice take on "The Pawnbroker" – plus other film titles that include "Eve", "Touch Of Evil", "Le Boucher", "Pinky", and "Doktor Mabuse" – as well as Blake originals "Spiral Staircase" and "Garden Of Delight". Mercury/Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
One of the biggest and best albums ever for Hamilton Bohannon – filled with quirky rhythms and really unusual grooves! Bohannon was one of the key forces in setting the scene for disco in the early 70s – and by the time the rest of the country was hitting the dancefloor in the middle part of decade, he was still moving forward, into a whole new realm of groove! The tracks on this set have some really mad rhythms – skittish and scattered, still with a dancefloor approach, but with lots of odd touches that set them apart from the rest of the pack. A key example of this is the great tune "Me & The Gang", which has this off-key piano loping out over chunky beats – but the whole thing's great, with a lot more of a sly edge than you'd expect from the cover. It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. Moses BoydDark Matter ... CD
Exodus (UK), 2020. Used ... $6.99 9.99
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". A really great early album from Larry Carlton – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Atlantic/Robinsongs (UK), 1974/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 20.99
A trio of albums from Jimmy Castor – complete with bonus tracks too! First up is Butt Of Course – a funky funky classic from Jimmy Castor – a set that kicked off a tight run of records for Atlantic – and which firmly established his rep as a master of 70s funk! The sound of the set follows nicely from Jimmy's work on RCA – some of the fuzzy "Troglodyte" guitar work of those years, lots of earthy rhythms on the bottom, and Castor's trademark sense of wit – which was firmly in place even during his Latin Soul years! There's a few smoother, sweeter moments too – but these all come off nicely – and as always, Castor's a one-man soul music machine – able to handle plenty of sounds and styles with effortless ease! Titles include "Bertha Butt Boogie", "E Man Boogie", "Hallucinations", "Let's Party Now", "Potential", and "One Precious World". On Supersound, Jimmy Castor bursts forward with a groove that's different than his fuzzier work for RCA Records, but still equally funky throughout! Castor's still quite the multi-instrumentalist on the record – as in addition to singing lead, he plays plenty of soprano sax and timbales – the latter of which have this great skittish energy that really pushes the grooves forward strongly! And although the timbales are quite different than in Jimmy's earlier Latin work from the late 60s, there's a definite Latin-izing element in the way they're used – kind of an "it's not heavy enough – let's add more percussion" approach to the core 70s funk styles of the combo! Tunes are nicely quirky, and have a sense of humor in keeping with the cover – and titles include "Magic In The Music", "Supersound", "Bom Bom", "King Kong", and "A Groove Will Make You Move". E Man Groovin is a great extension of the funky style that Castor first started forging at RCA – touches with plenty of Jimmy's multi-instrumental touches on tenor, alto, and timbales – and given that great monster-inspired approach to lyrics – which ensures that the whole thing stays plenty vivid throughout! Vocals are nice and rough, and the instrumentation is heavy on basslines and clavinet – on titles that include the two part "Dracula", plus "Super Love", "I Love A Mellow Groove", "E Man Groovin", "I Don't Want To Lose You", and "Space Age". 2CD set features bonus tracks – "Space Age (12" disco version)", "King Kong (part 1)", "Supersound (7" version)", "The Christmas Song", "Merry Christmas", and "Bertha Butt Boogie (7" version)". Comet Is ComingHyper Dimensional Expansion Beam ... CD
Impulse, 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Comet Is Coming are one of those groups who are almost a genre unto themselves – certainly part of the rich criss-crossing of styles that has been taking place on the London scene of the past decade or so – but also a trio who've found a way to forge forward and hold the world at bay with a record like this! At the core, the approach is simple – tremendous tenor work from Shabaka Hutchings, drums from Betamax, and keyboards from Danalogue – the latter two of whom are equally important as producers, in the way they take the live performance at the core, and work it into so many other shifting shapes and sounds! Hutchings' solos are always kept mostly intact, which makes for a beating soul to the record, and a nice link to previous generations of jazz – on titles that include "Pyramids", "Tokyo Nights", "Technicolour", "Code", "Lucid Dreamer", "Atomic Wave Dance", "Mystik", and "The Hammer". Larry CoryellFairyland ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
One of the loosest, most open albums from the early years of guitarist Larry Coryell – and a set that maybe has him pointing even more strongly forward in a jazz direction than some of his earlier, more rock-influenced work! The album's a live date, recorded at the Montreux jazz festival – and the group's just a trio, with the great Bernard Pretty Purdie on drums, and Chuck Rainey on bass – both players who can be funky when they want, but who are more relaxed and loose here – so that Larry himself can really stretch out and soar in the lead. The lack of any other instrumentation really brings a focus on Coryell's maturing skills on guitar – as he stretches out on long tracks, singing a bit, but mostly jamming, sometimes with a darker and noisier sound than we'd expect! Titles include "Souls Dirge", "Eskalemuir", and "Further Explorations For Albert Stinson". CD

Creative SourceCreative Source ... LP
Sussex, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
The massive first album from Creative Source – a really unique group who really helped push the ensemble vocal mode forward in the 70s! The mixed male/female lineup recalls similar groups of the late 60s – but Creative Source also have a deeper, hipper style that comes through right away – a good ear for jazz in their phrasing, and an ability to get past any of the hoke of more sing-song gal/guy groups. The tunes are very progressive, and the album features sublime arrangements from Skip Scarborough – who's working here in a wonderful realization of the style he'd work later for so many other artists. The group does a classic rendition of Scarborough's "You Can't Hide Love", which was a hit for Earth Wind & Fire, plus nice covers of two tracks by Sussex labelmate Bill Withers – "Who Is He & What Is He To You" and "Let Me In Your Life". Also includes the group's own "Oh Love", which is a nice groover – plus "Magic Carpet Ride", "Wildflower", and "Lovesville". LP, Vinyl record album

Theon CrossIntra I ... CD
Believe Direct Limited, 2022. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A pretty fantastic album from Theon Cross – the London-based jazz musician whose main instrument is the tuba, and who's given some really wonderful contributions to a range of different projects! Here, though, Theon really knocks it out of the park – still using his familiar instrument, but emerging maybe more as a soul-based musician too – vocalizing a bit, and bringing in a fair bit of electronics to keep things moving with a crisply crackling vibe throughout! The use of the tuba in these circumstances is wonderful – the depth of a bass part, but sometimes flowing out with more melodic moments too – and the whole record is one that will really blow away any expectations at all you might have for both Cross and his instrument. Titles include "Watching Over", "Forward Progression II", "Play To Win", "Universal Alignment", "The Spiral", "Trust The Journey", "We Go Again", and "Roots". CD

Cryan ShamesA Scratch In The Sky ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
A great step forward for The Cryan Shames – a group who started their career singing other peoples' music, but who emerge here with some great songs of their own! There's a brilliant Sunshine Pop feel to the whole record – but there's also some garagey elements that reflect the group's presence on the Chicago scene of the 60s – not a Dunwich quality entirely, but not far off either! That edge makes the psych moments really sparkle nicely – with a more sinister feel than anyone might have guessed from the group on their initial outing. A few moments echo Brit invasion modes – but with a trippier style that's a bit like Chad & Jeremy on Columbia – and titles include "Cobblestone Road", "The Sailing Ship", "A Carol For Lorelei", "Sunshine Psalm", "Mr Unreliable", and "In The Cafe". Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $79.99
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark by which so many other records would be judged (and fail) in years to come! The double-length set makes full use of all four sides of the record – expanding the flow (as well as the lineup) of the original Davis modal vision – and using all players to amazing effect, so much so that most players here turn out some of their best recorded work ever! The lineup is virtually a whose who for the sound of fusion in the 70s – including Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Bennie Maupin on bass clarinet, Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass, and Lenny White and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus Jumma Santos and Don Alias on added percussion. Titles include "Pharaoh's Dance", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", and "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Beat (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $32.99 34.99
A groovy little soundtrack – put together by the DeAngelis brothers for one of the earlier pairings of Terence Hill and Bud Spencer – with a sound that's arguably better than most of their later soundtracks! There's plenty of playful elements in the mix – the kind of jaunty grooves that always seemed especially well suited to Hill's moments onscreen – but there's also some great 70s moments too, of the sort that push forward from mod 60s Italian comedy grooves, with some nice exotic and bossa touches on a few of the best tracks. Instrumentation is a lot richer than other Hill/Spencer scores – and the LP features a whopping 17 tracks that include "Flying Through The Air", "Gli Amici", "Valzer Fra Amici", "Il Matto", "Samba", "Bossa", "Plata & Salud", and "Il Ballo". Posi tone, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
We love the work of trombonist Michael Dease, and a record like this really has him in the best possible setting to really do his thing – working with a combo of well-chosen, sympathetic players, getting to unfurl some great new compositions, and stepping forward with this rock-solid energy that easily makes him one of the greatest contemporary musicians on his instrument! Dease isn't one to take the trombone into free jazz territory – but he does evolve the instrument a few steps past the territory of predecessors like JJ Johnson, Curtis Fuller, and even Steve Turre – working with a voice that's all his own, and a tight sense of phrasing that resonates especially well here with work on trumpet from Alex Sipiagin. But, as mentioned, the whole group's great – a wonderfully warm lineup with Renee Rosnes on piano, Rudresh Mahanthappa on alto, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – the last two of whom are wonderfully hard-swinging, and are fast becoming one of our favorite contemporary rhythm teams. Titles include the Dease originals "Horse Trading", "Lullaby For Rita", "Charly Jaye", and "Parker's Brood" – plus the tracks "Tiktaalk", "Glory", "Rainbow People", and "With Love". CD

A lasting classic from Digable Planets, and a record that really helped push the bar forward for hip hop at the time – at a level that's still kept this one strong all these many years later! Digable Planets weren't the first group to bring in some influence from jazz to their work – but they definitely found the right balance here, and a way of setting things up that was real and organic, instead of maybe just a nodding reference to the past that always felt a bit out of place. The use of live instrumentation next to samples is also key to the record's sound – common now, but pretty important at the time, especially in a world of declining sample access. The trio of Butterfly, Ladybug, and Doodlebug have a wonderful way of tripping through the lyrics – and titles include "The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug", "Black Ego", "Dog It", "Jettin", "Borough Check", "Highing Fly", "Dial 7", "The Art Of Easing", "KBs Alley", "Graffiti", "Blowing Down", "9th Wonder", and "For Corners". Ferry Djimmy was originally a boxer, and spent time outside of his native Benin – but on a return to the country in the early 70s, he cut this cooker of a record – one that's completely unbridled and stripped-down – with a lot leaner vibe than most other African funk of the time! Many cuts just have basslines, percussion, and guitar – tight and sinister, and driving forward with non-stop action while Ferry sings the lyrics in a very earthy style. A real move forward for the George Duke keyboard sound of the 80s – and a set that has George using a fair bit of synclavier and linn drums in the mix! Things are almost even more electric than before – and that's saying a lot for Duke – with almost no acoustic instrumentation at all, save for some slight piano – and heavy electronics that not only touch the programmed rhythms, but also process some of the vocals as well! Duke's still very much in fine form, though – and his experience with generations of fusion assure that his efforts in this area are still much stronger than most, even on some of the more hook-heavy tunes in the set. Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... CD
ZTT/Navarre, 1984. Used ... $5.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Aretha FranklinAmazing Grace ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A legendary album – one that has Aretha Franklin returning to her roots in gospel music – but working with all the strength and power that Atlantic Records had to offer! From early years recording as a young voice alongside her father's congregation, Aretha has matured into a hell of a lead singer – and really knocks it out of the park here alongside the mighty James Cleveland, and the Southern California Community Choir! While it might have been nice to record the set back home in Detroit, the California setting for the material works perfectly to elevate Franklin to a special place in the heavens – tying together her heritage in beautiful ways, and making for another great stride forward in her career during the 70s. One of the best ideas ever for a soul music concept album – with titles that include "Mary Don't You Weep", "How I Got Over", "Precious Memories", "Wholy Holy", "Never Grow Old", "Amazing Grace", and Climbing Higher Mountains". LP, Vinyl record album

Caesar FrazierAnother Life (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Westbound (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
A sweet step forward for the mighty Caesar Frazier – an artist you might know more as a Hammond organist from his earlier albums as a leader – but one who steps out here as a soul singer with a mighty sweet groove! The record's way more than just a quick shift to disco for some cash – as Caesar's getting some excellent help here from arranger David Van DePitte – the Motown genius who brought great sounds to Marvin Gaye and others, and who really helps keep things at a more sophisticated level here – as Frazier sings in the lead, instead of playing his usual keyboards. And while the set was recorded in Detroit, it also got a final mixdown at Sigma Sound in Philly by the great Tom Moulton – who really finds a way to bring out the best energy of the cuts. Titles include "Child Of the Wind", "Lady", "Another Life", "Till Another Day", and "I Got To Have Your Love". CD features two bonus tracks – the unissued "Gonna Lay It On Ya", and "Till Another Day (Tom Moulton 7" edit)". CD

✨✧ Don FriedmanDreams & Explorations ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1964. Used ... $19.99
Easily one of the most modern recordings made by pianist Don Friedman in his early years – a set of forward-thinking numbers done with a quartet that includes guitar Atilla Zoller! As with Zoller's own work from the time, there's a freewheeling approach here that slides effortlessly between melody and rhythm – in a way that often has the guitar and piano flying freely, while the bass from Dick Kniss and drums from Dick Berk take off into sound patterns and tunes of their own. The approach isn't totally out, nor totally free – but it's certainly more so than the usual album on Riverside from the time! Titles include "Israel", "Episodes", "Exploration", "Blizzard", and "Park Row". CD

Ofori Brothers/Hot Casa (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 39.99
The sublime first album from K Frimpong – a really unique blend of hi-life and Afro Funk, but served up with all these unusual touches that make the album stand out from even most of the rest of the revolutionary sounds that were coming from Ghana at the time! There's this sense of flow that has each side of the record moving with non-stop energy – and an approach to rhythm that's almost as if the whole thing was moving forward like water – a tide of bass, percussion, riffing guitar, and organ – bubbling, dipping, and chugging in a way that seems completely effortless – while Frimpong urges the group on with his well-inflected vocals and lead guitar! Titles include "Nana Bue Me", "Mofofoo", "Komofo Adu", "Otwie", "Osaw", "M"Anoma", "Moma Yen Sore", and "Susuansu". LP, Vinyl record album

GenesisDuke ... LP
Atlantic, 1980. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
An overlooked gem from Genesis – a record that maybe forms a perfect bridge between their early concept years and the tighter mode that drove them into the 80s – and a set that really has the trio version of the group finding their way forward! There's some of the catchiness of Abacab to come, but there's also more of a sense of scope – that long form instrumental exploration that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks continued from the early years – honed into more focus, and driven by the increasingly strong drum talents of Phil Collins! Phil's a few years away from being an MTV figure here – and is instead more of a proud progger, finding a way to bring things into tighter energy – and really balance the whole thing beautifully. Titles include the hits "Turn It On Again" and "Misunderstanding" – balanced with "Duke's Travels", "Dutchess", "Behind The Lines", "Heathaze", and "Cul De Sac". LP, Vinyl record album

German OakDown In The Bunker (3CD set) ... CD
Bunker/Now Again, 1972. New Copy 3 CDs ... $9.99 20.98
One of the darkest albums of the Krautrock scene in the 70s – an album that was actually recorded in a WWII-era bunker – where the duo were free to open up their instruments, jam for a very long time, and play with the sorts of effects and techniques you might know from bigger groups of the period! Yet there's a brooding quality here that's different than Can, Faust, or other groups – maybe because German Oak were a duo without a very clear path forward, and also because recording an album in an underground concrete bunker was bound to produced some weird vibes on the session! One of the group members recalls in the notes that in the space, he couldn't help thinking of the trauma of WWII – and you can definitely hear that in the music, and see it in the look of the package – which carries tunes that include "Screaming Skeletons", "Missile Song", "Belle's Song", and "Nothing". This fantastic package offers up some great notes from the group – in both German and English – and also adds in rare material too – the tracks "Bear Song", "Happy Stripes On Cats", "Ghost Guitar", "Belle's Song (extended)", "Python Vs Tiger", "Giant Rock Boulder Golem", "Missle Song (extended)", "Harpy & Peregrine", and "Bear Song (alt version)". Gilberto GilGilberto Gil (1968) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
A bold leap forward from Gilberto Gil – his first album recorded during the Tropicalia years, and an amazing collaboration with arranger Rogerio Duprat! The album's got a sound that really bridges scenes in Brazil – elements of older folkloric musics, folded with samba rhythms, folded again with psychedelic touches from Os Mutantes – who also help out on the set – all wrapped together with a sound so revolutionary, it still crackles with energy all these many years later! The sound and style are impossible to describe accurately, which is part of the charm of the record – and it's key placement as one of the prime musical texts of the Tropicalia years. Titles include "Marginalia II", "Luzia Luluza", "Pega A Voga, Cabeludo", "Frevo Rasgado", "Domingou", and "Domingo No Parque". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – "Barca Grande", "A Coisa Mais Linda Que Existe", "Questao De Ordem", and "A Luta Contra A Lata Ou A Falencia Do Cafe". CD

Gilberto GilSound Of Revolution (Gilberto Gil 1968/Gilberto Gil 1969) ... CD
Philips/El (Brazil), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
2 late 60s classics from Gilberto Gil – the bulk of his Tropicalia recordings on a single CD! First up is his self-titled album from 1968, a bold leap forward for Gil – his first album recorded during the Tropicalia years, and an amazing collaboration with arranger Rogerio Duprat! Next is the rare 3rd album by Gilberto Gil, and a key piece of the Tropicalia puzzle – one of the most wildly experimental albums from those years, and Gil's last before going into exile! The sound is much more electric than his other albums from the late 60's – and the production, songwriting, and instrumentation get very crazy at times – but never too crazy to cover up Gilberto's excellent singing, which is still as filled with feeling as ever. Arrangements are by the mighty Rogerio Duprat, who does as great a job here of balancing Gil's sensitivities as he does on Gal Costa's sublime efforts from 1969 – and the instrumentation is a weird and wonderful mix of Bahian rhythms, fuzzy guitar, and crazy electronics – all heartfelt one minute, freaked out the next. Tracks include "Cerebro Eletronico", "Volks Volkswagen Blue", "Futurivel", and "2001", which was written by Tom Ze and Rita Lee – plus the wild cut "Objecto Semi-Identificado", which is sort of a John Cage-esque track of found radio and electronics, with vocals by Gil! Blue Note, 2005. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99 39.99
One of the crowning moments of genius from pianist Robert Glasper – a set recorded early in his career, and one that set the tone for all the greatness to come! Glasper's already a completely unique musician on his instrument – moving with these flowing waves of sound that turned out to be an inspiration for so many other younger musicians to come, but which here still sound the best in the hands of the originator – rolling forward with this soulful energy that's very different than anything that came before, and which still never fails to blow us away! The core trio features Vincente Archer on bass and Damion Reid on drums – and the set features guest vocals from Bilal on "Chant" and "I Remember" – and guest tenor from Mark Turner on "Riot" and "Rise & Shine". Rumination, 2022. New Copy ... $19.99 21.99
Matt Gold is a Chicago guitarist, one you might know from his work with Makaya McCraven – but here, he's out on his own, as a very different artist overall – delivering a mix of moody little numbers that were all recorded on his own during the depths of a Windy City winter – with Matt adding in some vocals, and handling a range of different instruments as well! A number of tracks have acoustic guitar, and are more laidback, personal, and almost recall solo work from the acoustic underground – while others are more song-based, with forward rhythms that are usually topped with vocals. Titles include "Hazel Friend Of Mine", "Sing Us Till Dawn", "On Our Way Out", "190 Proof", "Coming Up Shy", and "Remains". LP, Vinyl record album
