Brazilian Love AffairVoce E Eu – Joao Gilberto Revisited By Brazilian Love Affair Project ... CD
Fonte (Italy), 2013. Used ... $5.99
A sweet set of contemporary bossa gems – all older numbers made famous by Joao Gilberto in his early days – spun out with a very fresh finish here by the Brazilian Love Affair combo! The group work in a mostly live jazz mode, with just a bit of programming on the rhythms – and the album's especially heavy on Fender Rhodes, which updates an older bossa sound nicely – amidst older-styled instrumentation on acoustic guitar, Hammond, trombone, and flute. The vocals are great – with the same raspy charm of Joao's early recordings – that very human, very honest quality that made his singing so different from other vocalists of his generation – and titles include "Rosa Morena", "Desafinado", "Voce E Eu", "O Barquinho", "Saudade Fez Um Samba", "Ho Ba La La", and "Chega De Saudade". Djalma PiresO Tempo Passa O Samba Fica ... CD
RGE/Discobertas (Brazil), 1973. New Copy ... $14.99
Warmly soulful samba from Djalma Pires – a singer who's got a nice way of sliding into the groove, and a style that's maybe a bit gentler than some of his contemporaries – but in a way that still really fits the setting! Backings are in the best mode of the RGE label at the time – nicely bouncing, raw at the core, and never too overdone – which makes for a very personal vibe to the whole thing, and a completely performance from Djalma! Titles include "A Fonte Secou", "Obsessao", "Viva Meu Samba", "Que Rei Sou Eu", "Balanca Zona Sul", "O Orvalho VEm Caindo", and "Exaltacao A Mangueira". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoArt Ensemble Of Chicago With Fontella Bass (limited numbered edition) ... CD
America/Verve, 1972. Used ... $29.99
One of a few wonderful albums recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago with singer Fontella Bass – a vocalist who's best known to the world for her 60s soul hits, but who's coming out here as a tremendous force in modern jazz! Fontella's sound here is miles away from that of her work for Chess – deeply organic, and with chanted qualities that one would have never expected in earlier years. The track "How Strange/Ole Jed" builds with a sound that's similar to other Art Ensemble work in Paris – but has more than enough space for some lovely chants and vocalizations from Bass. "Horn Web" follows with a more driven, percussive approach – offering a tremendous showcase for Don Moye's work on drums at the start, then moving into more contemplative space to be explored by the entire group. CD
(Out of print, please note that there a slight tear on the case cover & is priced accordingly.)

Fontella BassFree (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Paula/P-Vine (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $19.99
Very righteous work from Fontella Bass – an album done after her time at Chess Records, and after her work in Paris with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – in a heartfelt, southern soul mode that's totally great! Fontella's back working with producer Oliver Sain, who first brought her fame back in the 60s – but the sound is a bit more sophisticated than before, drenched with roots from gospel and country soul, but also inflected with some of the more righteous modes of the early 70s, too. Fontella's vocals are incredible – with a range that should have made her one of the leading ladies of soul in the 70s – and titles include "To Be Free", "I Need Love", "Wiping Tears", "Hold On this Time", "Talking About Freedom", and "My God My Freedom My Home". 4 bonus tracks on this CD edition: "It Sure Is Good", "I'm Leaving The Choice To You", "Home Wrecker" and "It's Hard To Get Back In". Checker, Late 60s. Very Good ... $6.99
2 great duets from the team of Fontella and Bobby – one of the lesser known pairs to record in the style for Chess! Both cuts are hard-hitting, sock-soul numbers – really grooving with a blend of southern deep and Chicago hard – coming off well in a mode that brings out the best in both singers! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Clea BradfordHer Point Of View ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Very Good ... $19.99
Clea was one of a host of hip female singers that Chess was trying to bring up in the late 60s – and although she was less successful than bigger stars like Fontella Bass or Marlena Shaw, this album's in very much the same mode as some of the best Cadet female soul, with arrangements by Richard Evans that cover the same range of styles as Shaw's best early work. The album kicks off with the funky cut "My Love's A Monster", then rolls into hip jazzy versions of "Summer Time", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Spring Is Here" – and also includes two originals, "I Need Love" and "The View From Up Here", both with a strong stepping groove! Mitty CollierShades Of Mitty Collier – The Chess Singles 1961 to 1968 ... CD
Chess/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A mighty helping of music from the overlooked Mitty Collier – a 60s soul singer on Chess Records, and one who was every bit as great as bigger label stars like Etta James or Fontella Bass! Like both of those singers, Mitty's got a voice that grabs you right from the get-go – a deeply soulful approach to her music that's really fresh and without cliche – especially considering she got her start belting out tunes years before some of the bigger names in 60s female soul, and managed to keep things mighty real all the years she was working at Chess. Production and arrangements here are all top shelf – handled by Phil Wright, Riley Hampton, and others – and the CD offers up 24 gems from Mitty's years at Chess – the a-sides of all 15 singles cut for the label, plus 9 more great tunes from the flips! Titles include "Everybody Makes A Mistake Sometimes", "Gotta Get Away From It All", "I've Got Love", "I Had A Talk With My Man", "Walk Away", "My Party", "Sharing You", "That'll Be Good Enough For Me", "Git Out", "Watching & Waiting", "Like Only Yesterday", "No Faith No Love", "I'm Your Part Time Love", and "Miss Loneliness". Mighty SparrowSlave ... CD
National/Modern Harmonic, 1963. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A great 60s record from Mighty Sparrow – and the kind of set that shows just how different calypso music could sound when you got away from Harry Belafonte and the hits! The music here is every bit as political and socially conscious as earlier recordings of the genre – but you can also hear some of the cool 60s changes taking place on the Caribbean scene – including great use of horns to inflect most of the tunes with a great sort of edge – in the way Jamaican jazz and mento styles were shifting gears into rocksteady and ska! Sparrow's vocals have plenty of bite – and titles include "The Slave", "Calypso Twist", "Corbeau Sheltering Rain", "Popularity Contest", "Stupid Married Man", "Kennedy & Kruschev", and "Old Man & The Donkey". ✨✧ VariousLibrary Archive – Funk, Jazz, Beats & Soundtracks From The Vaults Of Cavendish Music ... LP
BBE (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Brilliant funky instrumentals from the UK Cavendish Sound Library – a company who could sometimes recorded more staid music, although that certainly wasn't the case with the gems on this collection! The music is by a handful of British studio talents of the time – most of whom come from the jazz scene in earlier years – and provide a great update of their earlier talents with some very sweet electric touches! Many of these tunes have some really great keyboards – Fender Rhodes or even moogier elements – and many also have wicked basslines next to the funky drums, which really make things kick throughout. These tunes are vastly undiscovered – at least in comparison to better-known sound library funk from companies like KPM or DeWolfe – but we'd put these grooves right up there with the best of that bunch too. Titles include "Night Shade", "The Rally", "Southbound", "Snowmobile", "Night Driver", "The Trackers", and "Lady Killers" by Dennis Farnon; "Milky Way" and "Star Voyage" by John Scott; "Two Bars" and "The Scape Goat" by Pete Moore; "The Big Score" by John Cacavas, "One Way Trip" by Sam Fonteyn, "Smile Of A Stranger" by Dominic Sands, "Riff Raff" by Geoff Bastow, "Come Cuban" by Edward White, and "Kaleidoscope" by Tony Kinsey. The 100th issue of Straight No Chaser – a fantastic book-size version of the magazine that was one of the most important inspirations for Dusty Groove back at the start! There's few folks that cover the kind of music we love as well as Straight No Chaser – and this time around, they really knock it out of the park – with long articles on Kahil El Zabar, Rosie Turton, Tomorrow's Warriors, Thomas Sayers Ellis, IG Culture & Steam Down, Shirley Tettah, and Brownswood Recordings – plus lot of shorter features and some great art prints too! The expanded issue also features some key interviews from the SNC archives – with Abbey Lincoln, Pharoah Sanders, Dr John, Yusef Lateef, Gary Bartz, Terry Callier, Fontella Bass, and McCoy Tyner. ✨✧ VariousFunk Soul Sisters Presented by SuperFunk – Classic & Rare Female Funk ... CD
BGP (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky female soul galore – a killer set of rare tunes that's one of the best sets of this type we've ever stocked! The SuperFunk crew at BGP have gone through the rich array of labels handled by the company – pulling out some massive tunes that really push our understanding of female soul – taking things way past the obvious hits and girl group numbers, into hard and heavy-stepping territory that we really love! Most of the tunes on the set are completely new to our ears, and there's a great mix of northern and southern funk styles that keeps things super-fresh. Drums crackle, basslines pound, and the gals belt it out loud, clear, and funky on a set of 20 tracks that includes "Tell Me What's Wrong" by Lynn Varnado, "Listen Here" by Valorie Keys, "Know What To Do When You Get It" by The Genies, "Heavy Heavy Hangs My Heart" by Vera Hamilton, "Better Get A Move On" by Louise McCord, "Pounds Of Soul" by Betty Bibbs, "Ooh Wee Baby" by Delilah Moore, "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Spanky Wilson, "Staying At Home Like A Woman" by Lynn Varnado, "Hold On This Time" by Fontella Bass, "Mr Fix It" by Thelma Jones, "I'm Glad I Got Over You" by Jeanette Jones, "One Way Street" by Little Ann, and "It's Too Late For Tears" by Rene Bailey.
