VariousAmerican Banjo Tunes & Songs In Scruggs Style ... LP
Folkways, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 21.98
A great overview of overlooked banjo work from the postwar years – the king of lightning-fast performance that was made famous by Earl Scruggs, but which is served up here by a host of lesser-known talents from the time! Think of the set as a more underground take on the Flatt & Scruggs 50s material on Columbia – and revel in performances that include "Jesse James" by Eric Wissberg, "Pretty Polly" by Bob Baker, "Rueben's Train" by Kenny Miller, "Cindy" by Dick Tittler, "Wildwod Flower" by Eugene Cox, "I Don't Love Nobody" by JC Sutphin, "Rosewood Casket" by Smiley Hobbs, "Cacklin Man" by Joe Stewart, "Lonesome Blues" by Snuffy Jenkins, and "Jenny Lynn" by Don Bryant. Smithsonian Folkways, 1940s/1950s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $54.99 59.98
A fantastic little package – and one that may well have more meaning these days than ever before! The lavish set features a huge hardcover book – 124 pages of notes, photos, and other information – all put together in conjunction with a Smithsonian exhibition of the same name – which presents the undeniable power of music in the 20th century – themes of progress, politics, struggle, and achievement – spun out over a variety of different genres that include blues, folk, jazz, gospel, and a huge amount of global styles too! As you'd guess from the label, many of the tracks come from the rich holdings of the Folkways label – but other imprints have also been folded into the mix, which makes for a really fantastic assemblage of music. 4CDs feature over 80 titles in all – with work by Woody Guthrie, Joe Glazer, Rumel Fuentes, Sandoval Begay, Cantor Abraham Brun, The Old Harp Singers Of Eastern Tennessee, Pete Seeger, Strange Creek Singers, Inger Nielsen, Grupo Raiz, Caravan, Mikis Thedorakis, Chippewa Nation, Lester Bradley & Friends, Sam Brothers Five, Austin Pitre, John Littlehohn, Quetzel, Kristin Lems, and many others. ✨✧ VariousJazz Fest – The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (book & 5CD set) ... CD
Smithsonian Folkways, 2019. New Copy 5CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the first collection we've ever seen that really gets at the multi-faceted genius of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival – that long-running event that's become one of the most important annual concert series on the planet, and which still stands as a continual revelation, even after 50 years! The book-style package has a large, hardcover volume – with many pages of writings on the event, photos shot over the years, and other great images too – as much a memento of years past, if you've visited – as it is a great way to experience the event even if you've never had the funds or the time to make it down to Nola in May! But to us, the real appeal is the music – 5CDs, and 50 long tracks all recorded at the event over the years – with music that runs the gamut from blues to jazz to soul, with a few surprises along the way – served up in a wealth of obscure tracks from Dr John, The Wild Magnolias, Dixie Cups, John Boutte, Irma Thomas, The Zion Harmonizers, Henry Butler, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Kenny Neal, The Neville Brothers, Beausoleil, Savoy Family Cajun Band, Big Freedia, Deacon John, Walter Wolfman Washington, Funky Meters, Earl King, Allen Toussaint, Donald Harrison Jr, The Golden Eagles, Champion Jack Dupree, Snooks Eaglin, The White Eagles, Marcia Ball, Professor Longhair, Clarence Frogman Henry, and many many more! ✨✧ Nancy DupreeGhetto Reality ... LP
Folkways/Mississippi, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Kind of silly – but also pretty darn hip! Nancy Dupree was one of the most righteous music teachers you could ever have – and here, she's working with some young kids from the rough side of Rochester, in an album of simple tunes that have a surprisingly soulful edge to them. Nancy plays piano, and the kids sing either solo or in ensemble format. The record's got a starkness that's extremely compelling, and it's a lot stronger than we expected, even if it's not like some of the funky stuff on the Folkways label. Includes a song called "James Brown" that has all the kids making grunts and groans ala 60s James, then singing about his shift from a process to an afro! Other titles include "I Want", "What Do I Have?", "Bag Snatchin", and "Docta King". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great heavy vinyl and cover – feels a lot like the original!)

✨✧ Dariush Dolat-ShahiElectronic Music, Tar, & Sehtar ... LP
Folkways/Dead Cert (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing sounds at a level we've never heard before – a really unique combination of electronics and Persian music, done in a way that's quite different from any other recording of its nature! The electronics are used in a way that's relatively spare, but which definitely sets a sonic texture next to the acoustic sounds from sehtar and tar – not this moogy way of interfering with them, but more in terms of waves of sound that augment their qualities and deepen the overall feel of the music in really special ways. This is hardly any sort of gimmicky "world meets moog" record – and instead has an ethereal feel that's all its own – and this pulse that comes from the really modal use of all elements! Titles include "Zahab", "Razm", "Shabistan", and "Sama". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Woody GuthrieStruggle ... LP
Folkways, 1946/1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Folk legend Woody Guthrie was no stranger to struggle – which is the subject highlighted in most of these tunes – pulled together in the shape of this album, which offered a great counterpoint to the Bicentennial madness in America when it was released in 1976! The titles of the songs give plenty of an idea of the nature of the music – with classic Guthrie recordings done for Folkways in the 40s, including "The Dying Miner", "Waiting At The Gate", "A Dollar Down & A Dollar A Week", "Lost John", "Union Burying Ground", and "Ludlow Massacre" – many of which echo the continuing struggle of the working man, even as America was shining forth as an industrial giant. The recordings mostly feature Woody on vocals and guitar, but there's also some guest contributions from Cisco Houston and Sonny Terry – both key contemporaries of Guthrie. LP, Vinyl record album
(Beautiful pressing – a heavy classic Folkways-style cover, and booklet too!)

✨✧ Pete SeegerGoofing-Off Suite ... LP
Folkways, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Pete Seeger's billed as "Peter Seeger" on the cover – maybe out of some fake sense of seriousness, given that the record features a few songs by Beethoven, Bach, and other composers! But don't worry at all, as Pete's very much as down home as usual – playing here mostly solo – not just on banjo, but also mandolin and chalit – using the stringed instruments in this amazing way, as he completely transforms the tunes in a sense of imagination that moves through both time and musical space – all years before John Fahey made his first record! Titles include "The Mexican Blues", "Woody's Rag", "Russian Folk Themes & Yodel", "Cindy", "The Girl I Left Behind Me", "Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring", and "Oh Liza Poor Gal". LP, Vinyl record album

Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 8 CDs & Book ... $165.99 229.99
Whoa! An incredible, gargantuan 8 CD box set of the Louvin Brothers complete catalog for the Capitol, Apollo, Decca, and MGM labels in the late 50s and early 60s! Ira and Charlie are probably the greatest country harmony duo of all time – and the set is way too huge to even think about soaking up in a single sitting – but it's an essential slice of history for the completists out there, and thanks to Bear Family many of these tracks that might have disappeared forever live on thanks to the magic of CD! 220 songs – including tons of alternate versions from throughout the years, many of which still have the crackly quality you have on a lot of Folkways recordings – the kind that only contribute to the sincerity of the recordings rather than standing out as a flaw. The box also includes a massive book, with rare photos, a montage of all the original album cover art, a complete list of tracks recorded by other artists, and everything you need to know about the boys and their lives at the time! A small sample of what you'll find here – "Alabama", "Seven Year Blues", "Weapon Of Prayer", "Robe Of White", "Great Atomic Power", "Broadminded", "Satan And The Saint", "I Can't Say No", "Pitfall", "In The Pines", "Kentucky", "Katy Dear", "We Could", "Tennessee Waltz", "Dog Sled", "Blue", The Drunkard's Doom", and a couple hundred more! Junior WellsComing At You ... LP
Vanguard, 1968. Very Good ... $19.99
A great early album from Junior Wells – and one that really opens up that more soulful side of his talents that was becoming a Chicago hallmark at the time! The set was produced by Samuel Charters, but has none of the rootsy vibe of his earlier work on Folkways – and instead matches the harmonica and raw vocals of Wells with a bit of horn backings on a few tunes by the great Ed Bland (of previous Sun Ra cinema fame, and later funk arrangements) – blown by the unlikely mix of Tom McIntosh on trombone, with trumpets by Clark Terry, Wallace Davenport, and Jimmy Owens! The core group has the mighty Buddy Guy on guitar, with Walter Williams on rhythm guitar and Douglas Fagan on tenor – and Junior knocks it out of the park, on tunes that include "So Sad This Morning", "When My Baby Left Me", "Stop Breakin Down", "Somebody's Tippin In", "You Don't Love Me", "Little By Little", and "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man". Third Man, 1969. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 19.98
A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! In some ways, the three day series of concerts is a roots answer to Woodstock – which took place just a few weeks before – as the festival featured a great scope of blues talents, from the rootsier sort of artists who were recording for labels like Folkways or Arhoolie, to some of the sharper modern talents rising to the top on Chess or Delmark! The package alone is almost worth the price of admission – beautiful photographs of the event, detailed notes, and the first-ever release of this music – which has sat in the vaults for decades, finally to see the light of day. Titles include "Dirty Mother For You" by Roosevelt Sykes, "So Glad You're Mine" by Arthur Big Boy Crudup, "Everybody Must Suffer/Stone Crazy" by Luther Allison & The Blue Nebulae, "Help Me" by Junior Wells, "I Wonder Why" by Jimmy Dawkins, "Too Much Alcohol" by JB Hutto & His Hawks, "So Many Roads So Many Trains" by Otis Rush, "Long Distance Call" by Muddy Waters, "Off The Wall" by James Cotton Band, "Juanita" by Big Joe Williams, "Jelly Jelly Blues" by Shirley Griffin, "I Feel So Good" by Magic Sam, "Call It Stormy Monday" by T-Bone Walker, "Death Letter Blues" by Son House, "Key To The Highway" by Sam Lay, and "Mojo Hand" by Lightnin Hopkins. A beautiful excavation of the Library of Congress recordings – one that pulls together a great range of depression-era songs that really capture the changing culture and continuing struggles of the time! There's a range of different styles at play here, but the overall focus is on acoustic music – with strong folk and string-based instrumentation on most numbers – and especially strong, charismatic singers who can really burst out, even though the recording conditions weren't always optimal! Most artists are very obscure – recorded in the field by Alan and John Lomax, and other members of their team – and titles include "The Moonshiner" by Dawson Henson, "Longest Train I Ever Saw" by Jesse Wadley, "WPA Song" by Clyde Kingfish Smith, "Battle In The Horseshoe" by JW Russell, "Travelin To That New Buryin Ground" by Hammer Clarence Banks, and "Roosevelt & Hitler" by Buster Buzz Ezell. One of the rootsiest albums ever recorded by Taj Mahal – a set that begins with a song by Lightnin Hopkins, then seems to have Taj echoing a lot of the spareness of that work! The film's set in the 30s, and the music is very rootsy rural blues – with just Taj Mahal on vocals, steel-bodied guitar, harmonica, and even a bit of banjo and fife – served up in ways that almost make the whole thing feel like a Folkways recording, instead of an album done for Columbia. Tunes are often short, and a mix of vocals and instrumentals – and Lightnin Hopkins sings "Needed Time" – while the others include "Just Workin", "Jailhouse Blues", "I'm Running & I'm Happy", "Harriet's Dance Song", "Two Spirits Reunited", "Sounder Chase A Coon", and "Speedball".
