✨✧ Bilal AbdurahmanEchoes Of Timbuktu & Beyond In Congo Square ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". ✨✧ Amiri Baraka, Jayne Cortez, & OthersBefore Columbus Foundation ... CD
Folkways, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A hip batch of underground poetry tracks – collected together by the Before Columbus Foundation, a group dedicated to promoting the works of African-American and Native American artists! Despite the 1980 date, the collection has a feel that's similar to earlier righteous poetry albums on the Folkways label – proof that the flames were still burning strong in the underground, even though artists such as these weren't getting as much mainstream attention at the end of the 70s! Most readings are recorded live, with a relatively spare, stark sound – and performances include "Dope" by Amiri Baraka, "St Louis Woman" by Ishmael Reed, "For The Poets" by Jayne Cortez, "Bark Is What Us Dogs Do" by David Meltzer, "Flipochinos, Being Your Woman, & Pacific Lover" by Cyn Zarco, and "Artist/Art This" by Victor Hernandez Cruz. Barons, Dominoes, Queenettes, & OthersRoots – Rhythm & Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1966. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. Folkways, 1977. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A pretty cool collection produced by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee – focusing on famous speeches by important female African-Americans – mostly focusing on the civil rights era, but also featuring an early speech by Ida B Wells. Ruby reads the speeches, and works include "I Am A Black Revolutionary Woman (1971)" by Angela Davis, "The Right To A Decent Life & Human Dignity (1971)" by Coretta Scott King, "It Is Time For A Change (1969)" by Shirley Chisolm, and "Lynching, Our National Crime (1901)" by Ida B Wells. Nancy DupreeGhetto Reality ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
Kind of silly – but also pretty darn hip! Nancy Dupree was one of the most righteous music teachers you could ever have – and here, she's working with some young kids from the rough side of Rochester, in an album of simple tunes that have a surprisingly soulful edge to them. Nancy plays piano, and the kids sing either solo or in ensemble format. The record's got a starkness that's extremely compelling, and it's a lot stronger than we expected, even if it's not like some of the funky stuff on the Folkways label. Includes a song called "James Brown" that has all the kids making grunts and groans ala 60s James, then singing about his shift from a process to an afro! Other titles include "I Want", "What Do I Have?", "Bag Snatchin", and "Docta King". CD

✨✧ Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". CD

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... LP
Folkways, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 24.99
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Sarah Webster FabioJujus – Alchemy Of The Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
An incredible album, and very unique! Sarah Webster Fabio was a hip 70s poet with a very righteous sound – and she's working here with funky backings by a tight group that includes family members, in a style that's similar to early 70s work by artists like Wanda Robinson and Camille Yarborough – both of whom also mixed together funk and poetry! The album's got a massive funky cut called "Sweet Songs" – the kind of groover we never tire of, with tight drums, great guitar, and wonderful vocals by Sarah herself. There's lots of other great tunes too – with titles that include "Juju For Grandma", "Still A Red Hot Axe", "Chromo", "If We Come As Soft Rain", and "Jujus/Alchemy Of The Blues". CD

Edgar HendricksEdgar Hendricks Sings For The Very Young ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 16.98
A really unusual concept for a soul record, but one that works wonderfully all the way through – a mix of kid-oriented themes and warmly expressive vocals – with a vibe that almost feels like a hip 70s singer recording an album for Sesame Street! Edgar Hendricks works with just congas, bass, and piano on most tracks – this very cool, open approach that really demands a lot from his vocals – which rise to the occasion, and provide all these powerful, positive inflections on lyrics that most other singers would have just taken in a much straighter way! The result is very cool, and very special – like Bill Withers recording a special for the Children's Television Workshop in the 70s – with titles that include "The Bee & The Boy", "A Good Education Will Help You Through Life", "Song Of The Alphabets", "Let's Play A Circle Game", "Counting From One To Ten", and "Message To All Young People". ✨✧ Langston HughesRhythms Of The World ... CD
Folkways, 1955. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really wonderful record – and one that maybe brings together a few key strands of the Folkways Records magic – as the album features narration by Langston Hughes, based on his First Book Of Rhythms book – layered with sound effects, folk songs, and music from around the world – all put together in this wonderful sonic pastiche! Much as we love Langston's writings, we especially love his voice – and the record is almost like some global folk take on the area that Hughes explored in a jazz vein with Charles Mingus around the same point in his career. The set is one continuous very cool record – narrated by Langston Hughes, but featuring global music as well! There are songs at points, but the whole thing is really one continuous soundpiece, in the best Folkways tradition. CD

A great little 70s album of electric blues – a set that begins with a song about Watergate – then moves off into a whole other great range of themes too! Bob Kirkpatrick's got a vibe here that's in the better style of the small club scene of Detroit or Chicago at the time – lean, gritty, and with vocals wrapped around his guitar in a really wonderful way – getting support from a slightly unusual trio that features Jothan Callins on bass, Ron Burton on piano, and Harold White on drums – two of whom you'll know from work in spiritual jazz! Titles include "Watergate Blues", "Sweet Little Angel", "I Don't Know Why", "When The Sun Rose This Morning", "I Been Down So Long", and "I Got Love". CD

A beautiful little record – one that features cascading tones from the strings of the kora, mixed with occasional vocal moments too! The album was recorded in Dakar and Brikama in the mid 70s – and is maybe the start of a great run of later sessions that found a way of taking this amazing instrument to a wider audience – opening up the ringing, many-stringed tones of the kora with fidelity that really lives up to the tonal complexities of well-played performances like these. Beautiful sounds from the overlooked minimalist composer Craig Kupka – a set that features two very different tracks, each issued by Folkways Records – with a presentation that's both far away from the more academic records of the time, and some of the self-released work of the growing New Age underground! Side one features the long "Trombones Of Lithia" – piece that's heavy on the resonant sound of the trombone, but stretched out in this really longform way – nicely meditative, and clearly processed with a bit of electronics, but still with a warmly acoustic core. Side two features "Crystals" – a tune that has more keys, but a mix of 70s analogue and early 80s digital – again given some elements in the background that make the whole thing feel a lot warmer than you might expect, yet still with some of the experimental elements of earlier electronic composition. ✨✧ Lord Invader & His Calypso GroupCalypso Travels (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 22.98
The last album ever recorded by Trinidad calypso legend Lord Invader – and a set that really sums up all the genius he brought to his too-short career! At a time when the music was really entering the mainstream in commercial ways, Invader keeps things very spare, stark, and basic here – reminding us that at the core, calypso was not only a really revolutionary musical style in the Caribbean – but also a way for under-represented cultures to really get a chance to speak out! Lord Invader does plenty of that here – mixing social commentary with a fair bit of wit, all while the percussion is going crazy at the core – on titles that include "Cat O Nine Tails", "Crisis In Arkansas", "Fidel Castro", "My Experience In The Reeperbahn", "Me One Alone", "As Long As It Born In My House", and "Steel Band War". Folkways, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 24.99
A really beautiful record from Ann McMillan – one of the lesser-known talents in the female legacy of electronic music – but one we'd put right up there right next to Daphne Oram for her inventive genius! The set was recorded at the legendary Princeton Center For Electronic Music – and has a great approach in which McMillan mixes together sounds from nature with some acoustic instruments – then creates a blend through creative electronics, so that air, sea, traffic, and nature sounds are combined with percussion and other elements. One song is completely created from The Gong sound sculpture by artist Frederick Kiesler; another mixes New York Harbor sounds in an amazing way; and still another reworks a variety of unusual sonic emanations from a harpsichord. Titles include "Gateway Summer Sound", "Gong Song", "Amber 75", "Syrinx", and "Episode". LP, Vinyl record album

Montgomery ExpressMontgomery Express Does Party Fever & Other Songs Of The Montgomery Movement ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
A massive lost funk classic – one of those rarer than rare albums that's well worth the fuss! The Montgomery Express were a Florida combo who played on the state's small club circuit – working equally well on their own, or backing up a number of better known singers. The group's got a diversity that's really great – and they're equally well-suited to longer, trippier funk instrumentals, and shorter more soul-based tunes. The vocal numbers are especially haunting, as they've got a moody and sad feel that's more like New Jersey or Detroit group soul of the time than the usual Miami soul – and the funkier tunes have a nice psychedelic approach that uses plenty of sweetly-tuned guitar! 8 tracks in all – "Party Fever", "Precious Wing", "Montgomery Movement", "Gotta Make A Comeback", "Who", "Steal Away", "I'm Standing By", and "Left Me With A Memory". Folkways, 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A rare solo album from Nadi Qamar – an artist who's probably best known for his brief piano appearance with Charles Mingus, but who's working here on the Mama Likembi – an instrument of his own creation that's kind of like a big kalimba! From the information in the notes, it appears that the instrument is kind of an assemblage of smaller kalimbas – tuned pieces of metal over soundboards with hollow spaces – played simultaneously by Qamar with a really wonderful sound – haunting, and evocative, and even more stripped down than Phil Cohran's "On The Beach"! Titles include "After Glow", "Earth Quintessence", "California Sutra #2", "Australian Seascape", and "Tribute To Art Tatum". CD

JD RobbElectronic Music From Razor Blades To Moog ... CD
Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
A great entry in the "intro to electronic music" style that was popular at the end of the 60s – and like others in the genre, a set that seems to use each new track to demonstrate certain aspects of electronic music! Techniques include tape echoes, moogy passages, and even stereo separation effects – and lots of wonderful analogue electronics from JD Robb! The date of the work is 1970, but the approach is a bit older – almost abstract, and very concerned with sonic textures and space – but also playfully assembled, at a level that's fairly tuneful for most of the set – even though there's not really that many "songs" to speak of. Titles include "Collage No 2", "Spatial Serenade (excerpt)", "Green Mansions", "Analogies", "Les Ondes Martenot", and "Transmutations For Orchestra". CD

Smithsonian Folkways, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
West coast Latin jazz legend John Santos digs even deeper than usual here – serving up a set of tracks that trace the roots of the Cuban descarga style, but all with some of the warmth and personality that have made his previous records so great! John's core group features the leader on percussion, Melecio Magdaluyo on saxes, John Calloway on flute and piano, Marco Diaz on trumpet and piano, Saul Sierra on bass, and David Flores on drums. But there's plenty of contributions from older Latin legends – like Jerry Gonzalez on trumpet, Orlando Maraca Valle on flute, and Orlando Torriente on vocals – part of an expanded lineup that also changes up the sound a bit too, in way that isn't strictly a recreation of the late 50s/early 60s descarga modes – but instead shows how much those roots have evolved to inform the modes of Latin jazz. Titles include "14 Mission", "Juego De Ajedrez", "Lo Tuyo No Va", "Descargarara", "Tichin", "Descarga Con Changui", and "Los Misterios". CD

Folkways, 1957. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A vivid audio document of New York City in the late 50s – put together by creative sound recorder Tony Schwartz! The set's one of a few amazing albums put together by Schwartz – who spent a lot of time on the streets with his microphones and recorder, then really got creative putting the whole thing together in the studio – so that there's some good structure, and almost a sense of narrative to the record – yet in a way that also preserves all of the vivid, spontaneous aspects of the "on the street" recordings. Schwartz narrates a bit, includes some interviews, background sounds from certain areas of the city, and a range of performances in styles that run from jazz to folk to gospel and beyond! CD

Folkways, Mid 50s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A very cool document of New York in the 50s! Tony Schwartz turns the Folkways ethnographic microphone to the streets of the city – and comes up with amazing sounds and audio documents of life in the Big Apple – specifically, all material recorded in postal zone 19 – hence the title of the album! There's a fair bit of unusual things going on here – spoken bits, sound effects, and a variety of music from different sources – street preachers, jukeboxes, corner instrumentalists, and even some work by the legendary Moondog – who was maybe more of a figure on the New York streets of the 50s than he was a force in the concert halls and recording studios! Schwartz really gets at the cultural melting pot of the city over the course of the record – weaving together elements of Puerto Rican, Italian, Romanian, Jewish, Nigerian, and other cultures. CD

Great work from Tony Schwartz – one of the most compelling artists to ever record for the Folkways Records label, and almost more of a filmmaker than anything else! The set's a compelling audio documentary on the new and growing community of Puerto Rican residents in New York – particularly those in upper Manhattan – and it mostly features spoken passages by new immigrants, older residents of the city, and some who were opposed to the changing social scale – all with fascinating details about the struggles and triumphs of this growing side of the city. Folkways, 1982. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unusual music from the duo of Jaribu and Ngoma Hill – a pair who work together here in a mode that's partly the acoustic blues of the rural scene in the south, but fused with more urban elements too – including a bit of gospel spirit, and folk-inspired righteousness! As you might guess from their name, these guys have a fair bit of message in their music – delivered maybe with even more power in this setting than if they had a larger group behind them – as the duo vocals and acoustic guitar seem to be more than enough to get the meaning across! Titles include "High Rise Tenements", "Where Is The Justice", "The No Nuke Song", "Registration", "White Power Dreams", and "Undocumented". CD

Cha Cha ShawInto Morning (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 18.98
A rough-edged batch of spiritual jazz tracks from trumpeter Charles "Cha Cha" Shaw (not to be confused with Charles "Bo Bo" Shaw) – recorded in an open-ended loft jazz mode with a really open, echoey feel! The album's a rare 70s jazz date on the Folkways label, and it's almost got the freer, open sound of an ESP session from a decade before – experimental jazz that's very much at the fringes, but also played with some of the spirituality of the post-Coltrane generation. Shaw's trumpet has a really earthy sort of feel – blown with a great sense of personality, and a sound that's almost heart-wrenching at times – especially on some of the more modal numbers. Other players include Brian Ross on tenor, Billy Lyes on piano and guitar, and Ronnie Boykins on bass. Boykins is really the only player we know here from other records – and titles include the nicely grooving "KZ", plus "Juggety", "Super Slik", and "Eternal". LP, Vinyl record album
(Super-heavy vinyl and cover – feels like a vintage record on Folkways!)

✨✧ Mary Lou WilliamsZoning (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mary/Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent album by Mary Lou Williams – a set recorded during the 70s period when she was mixing in a bit of funk with her jazz! The sound here is wonderful – quite different than other work you might know from Williams, and much more in the sort of groove you'd expect from Junior Mance, Ray Bryant, Ramsey Lewis, or other soul jazz-oriented pianists! Williams plays acoustic piano in a very hip trio with Mickey Roker on drums and Bob Cranshaw on electric bass – the latter of whom brings in this well-rounded, soul-drenched tone that's a lot like the bass work on some of Monty Alexander's own best albums from the 70s. And Williams herself is totally great too – playing with some slightly exotic tones at points, and with a really in-the-pocket groove at others. Funky tracks include "Intermission" and "Rosa Mae" – and other titles include "Ghost Of Love", "Medi II", "Zoning Fungus", and a great version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Olinga". CD also features 2 previously unreleased tracks – "Syl-O-Gism" and an alternate of "Gloria". CD

A wonderful collection of early electronic music – issued by the less-high tech Folkways label, but every bit as compelling as similar collections from bigger labels at the time! A haunting batch of commercial music from the 70s – billed in the notes to Bosworth Ensembles, which makes us almost think that the work's from the Bosworth Sound Library – even though the record was issued in the US by Folkways! Most of the music here is relatively gentle – seductive 70s themes played on piano, keyboards, guitar, and other light instrumentation – the kind of tunes that must have been beautiful slinking behind the products featured in the TV ads – which include Zenith TVs, Buick station wagons, Dannon yogurt, and Revlon perfumes! Composers are listed as T Kinsey, J Pearson, V Flick, B Ebbinghouse, and K Palmer – all names that might be Brit Easy composers – and titles include "Guitarama", "Walking On Velvet", "Theme For Two Lovers", "Pastorella", "Fleeting Clouds", "Devil's Delight", "Apollo 15", and "Slow Glow". Folkways, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A seminal set of righteous underground poetry – a key bridge between the earlier work of Langston Hughes and some of the bigger spoken sides of the 70s by artists like Gil Scott-Heron or Wanda Robinson! As the title promises, there's a definite undercurrent of jazz in the work – but mostly in the subject matter of the poems, or in the riffing way the readers approach the material – since there's really no instrumentation at all to accompany the voices. There's a few names on here that you might recognize, but there's a lot more that you won't – and that makes the album a key look at this under-documented 60s scene. Titles include "Elvin Jones Gretch Freak" by David Henderson, "The Jackal Headed Cowboy" by Ishmael Reed, "Poem To Americans" by Gerald Jackson, "Poem To Ernie Henry" by Gloria Tropp, "Listening To Sonny Rollins at the 5 Spot" by Paul Blackburn, "African Memories" by Joel Oppenheimer, and "Autumn 1964" by Peter LaFarge. Folkways/Fantome Phonographique (Italy), 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A fascinating little record – and one of the oddest releases ever issued by Folkways Records! The set is exactly what it promises in the title – human speech, but after the voice box has been removed from an individual – so that vocalizations have to take the form of noises and phrases that are uttered in a completely different way than conventional conversation! Instead, most of the sounds here come from air moving through different parts of the mouth of esophagus – but with results that are completely unusual, and which often feel more like haunted house sound effects than any sort of speech. Titles include "Buccal Speech", "Man Without Larynx", "Singing Voice", "Esophageal Voice", "Western Electric", and "Singing Voice With Larynxphone". LP, Vinyl record album

Folkways, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 22.98
The sounds of the Tuareg culture have gotten some surprisingly strong global circulation in recent years – thanks especially to a few key guitarists who've gained international attention – but this 1960 recording by Folkways Records may well be one of the first times the music of the nomadic culture got exposure on this side of the Atlantic – all handled in a raw style that's very different than some of the more commercial recordings of the past decade! There's not really any guitar on here – and all the instrumentation is acoustic, usually heavy percussion mixed with some stringed instruments – used in ways that are pulsatingly rhythmic, and often featuring chanted vocals as part of the ecstatic tradition in the roots of the Tuareg sound. Titles include "Hunting Song", "Azale", "Song Of The Enaden", "Tohimo Dance", "Tarakemt", "Chikishikishin", "Ilougan", and "Camel Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Not the usual sorts of Brazilian songs that you might expect – no tight samba or bossa, but instead a batch of rootsy music from Bahia – all with rhythmic qualities that strongly inspired both later genres! Percussion is the strongest element on most of these tunes, but there's also some sharp stringed instrumental lines too – similar to cavaquinho in samba, or guitar in bossa – all topped with vocals from Oneyda Alvarenga – who almost seems to blow the microphone into the red with the intensity she brings to some of the performances. The whole set was recorded in Mar Grande, Itaparica – and titles include "O Embole Embole", "Samba Urbano", "Marcha Larga", "E Foi A Vaca", "Pena Verde", "Embolada", "A Tempo De Samba", and "Movemento De Marcha". Mindblowing music from the mighty Jon Appleton – a cool combination of tape effects, electronics, and studio wizardry – every bit as wonderful as his Syntonic Menagerie album for Flying Dutchman! The sound here is quite similar – a playful pastiche of odd sounds, tones, and other elements – fitted together with a lot more imagination than some of Jon's contemporaries – never too stuffy or academic, and almost with a sensibility that predicts remix work in the decade to come. Two tracks on the set – "Chef D'Oeuvre" and "Times Square Times Ten" – were on the Flying Dutchman album, but all the others appear to be unique – and titles include "Hommage To Orpheus", "Ofa Atu Tonga", "Nevsehir", "Apolliana", "Sones De San Blas", and "CCCP". Bodin keeps things spare and spooky at most moments – and uses themes from science fiction narratives that really fit the music – which often has these bold analogue elements that feel like the kind of noise you might be able to hear in space – wrapped around vocal moments that are often processed, so that they have a similarly electric vibe! An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. One of the coolest records we've ever heard from beat legend Allen Ginsberg – not just a record of his famous poetry, but one that also features him on harmonium as well! There's a really weird, dark sound to the record – as Ginsberg plays harmonium and sings/speaks his own words – older themes from the 60s and 70s, recast here with almost a new sense of blues and frustration. The approach is quite unique, and almost features a Ginsberg cowed a bit by the changes of time, but still with the same sense of wit and clarity he brought to his work a few decades back. Titles include "CIA Dope Calypso", "Put Down Your Cigarette Rag", "Come Back Christmas", "Bus Ride Ballad Road To Suva", "Prayer Blues", and "Dope Fiend Blues". CD

Folkways, 1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection of work from Langston Hughes – material pulled from a handful of albums recorded for the Folkway labels in the 50s, all of which are pretty darn great and long out of print! Hughes' writings are well known – part of a rich tradition of African-American expression in the 20th Century – but his readings of his own work are equally great – performed at a level that really illuminates the text, and balances them with all the right stress and meaning that can sometimes be overlooked given the simple nature of his language. Most of the sides here feature Hughes alone, reading his work – but a few also feature bits of music too – touches of jazz or gospel that further set the scene, and point to Langston's later experiments with Charles Mingus. Titles include "Breath Of A Spiritual", "Homesick Blues", "The Weary Blues", "I Too", "The Negro Speaks Of Rivers", "Simple Prays A Prayer", "Rhythms Of The World", "The Struggle", "Youth", and "Mother to Son". Great work from one of the most compelling poets to record for Folkway Records in the 70s – the always-righteous Nancy Dupree, working here in a really bad-rapping set of work! The album beings with a spoken, then sung, introduction from Dupree – then continues in a very conversational style – one that has Nancy talking in front of a small audience, who respond themselves – the rolling into some of her poems in a very easygoing, personal style. Overall, her voice is nicely pointed – as much so as Sarah Webster Fabio's albums on Folkways, if not more so – and certainly much more forceful than the work on the label by Nikki Giovanni. A hard biting album of hip poetry from the great Sarah Webster Fabio! The title cut is a brutal attack on the free use of the word soul by black musicians – and Sarah delivers the words over spare conga backing by family member Cyril Leslie Fabio II. The music was recorded in two different villages, and some of the tracks feature just one or two flutes, played together with a snakey, hypnotic quality that's really haunting – while other tracks are accompanied by a bit more percussion, and some lively chants at times – possibly sung by the dancers who are credited on the record, although their main actions clearly can't be "seen" in the recording! Titles include "Yergo", "Sarsang", "Sereba", "Sembelu", "Sokhadange", "Dung N Kaheng Serrehule", and "Tama Jung Jung Serrehule". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ VariousCult Music Of Cuba – Recorded In Cuba By Harold Courlander ... CD
Folkways, 1951. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
40s field recordings in pre-Castro Cuba – a series of tracks recorded in Havana and more rural locations, all of which document the surviving African traditions in Cuban music! Much of the work here is relatively spare and percussive – done with instrumentation that includes gourd scrapers, calabash rattles, friction drums, and bells – topped by vocals that often have a rhythmically chanting feel. Styles document the Lucumi, Arara, Abakwa, and Kimbisa cultures – and titles include "Lucumi Song", "Song To Orisha Oko", "Djuka Drums", "Song To Chongo", and "Song To Obatala". CD

✨✧ VariousElectronic Music From The Outside In ... CD
Folkways, 1980. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A double-length set of experimental electronics from Folkways – music recorded a bit later than some of the early analogue sides on the label, but done with a similarly spare and spooky feel! There's a nice maturation going on here – a move away from some of the more academic electronics of the immediat postwar years, into that more art-oriented space the music hit at the end of the 70s – a somewhat freer, more open, and almost more playful mode at times – although not in the manner of late 60s crossover pop electronic records. Most tracks are pretty long, and often introduced by the composers – and titles include "Heavy Music For Four Crowbars" and "The Sorcerer Revisited" by Barton McLean, "Nova" by Reed Holmes, "Through To The End Of The Tunnel" by Kevin Hanlon, and "Invisible Chariots" by Priscilla McLean. ✨✧ VariousHighlights Of Vortex – Electronic Experiments & Music ... CD
Folkways, 1959. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very cool set of music – originally recorded as part of a mixed sound/image experiment shown at the San Francisco Planetarium in the late 50s! There's definitely a lot of early analogue electronics going on here – but the presentation is also sometimes a bit more playful, and almost earthy, too – a great change from some of the more avant or academic records of this nature – and an illustration that even early on, there were poetically creative folks who found a lot of ways to work with a personal approach to the new medium! Titles include "Notes On The History Of A World Part 3" by Gordon Longfellow, "Rhythm Study No 8" by Henry Jacobs, "Trilogy" by David Talcott, "Electronic Kabuki Mambo" by Henry Jacobs, "For The Big Horn" by William Loughborough, and "Loop No 3" by David Talcott. Red CampNew Clavichord ... CD
Cook, 1957. New Copy ... $8.99 16.98
An insane album of keyboard tracks – almost as if Sun Ra was taking on an electrified version of boogie woogie! Pianist Red Camp's been recorded by the Cook label before, but this set features Red handling the clavichord – an instrument that's like a harpsichord, with a similar metallic sound overall! The approach is very odd – as Camp's work on the keys is quite dynamic and jamming, hardly the sort of take on the instrument you might expect, and one that really pushes its tones into weirdly distorted range – almost like Ra's use of the rocksichord on some of his 70s albums. The sound is amazing, and the record's unlike anything else we've heard from the time – and titles include "The Bluesando", "Nagasaki", "Alma Llanera", "Slow Slow Blues", "Prelude For Twelve Fingers", and "Twofer Atonement". ✨✧ Lilly TchiumbaAngola – Songs Of My People ... CD
Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD

✨✧ Mary Lou WilliamsMary Lou Williams (Black Christ Of The Andes) ... CD
Mary, 1963. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album – and one of the best records you'll ever find by Mary Lou Williams! The record's a mixture of jazz and spiritual themes, and it features Mary Lou's piano set in some super-hip jazz arrangements that include players like Grant Green, Budd Johnson, Larry Gales, Melba Liston, Ben Tucker, and Percy Heath. The bass and piano work is amazing, and many tracks have a dark groove that's very subtle, but very compelling. About half the tunes feature hip choral vocalizing – in the mode of some of the Donald Byrd or Max Roach albums from the same time – mostly handled by the group of Howard Roberts. Includes the classic groover "A Grand Nite For Swinging", plus "A Fungus Amongus", "Anima Christi", "Miss DD", "The Devil", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "My Blue Heaven". Great stuff all around – and even better than we're describing it! This CD issue features the original Mary Records cover art – different than the Saba/MPS or later Smithsonian CD versions. CD

✨✧ VariousAnn Arbor Blues Festival 1969 ... CD
Third Man, 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99 19.98
A fantastic document of the first-ever Ann Arbor Blues Festival – the start of a great event that would blossom into other styles of music in the 70s, but which stood as a strong blues-based event in its initial year of 1969! In some ways, the three day series of concerts is a roots answer to Woodstock – which took place just a few weeks before – as the festival featured a great scope of blues talents, from the rootsier sort of artists who were recording for labels like Folkways or Arhoolie, to some of the sharper modern talents rising to the top on Chess or Delmark! The package alone is almost worth the price of admission – beautiful photographs of the event, detailed notes, and the first-ever release of this music – which has sat in the vaults for decades, finally to see the light of day. Titles include "Dirty Mother For You" by Roosevelt Sykes, "So Glad You're Mine" by Arthur Big Boy Crudup, "Everybody Must Suffer/Stone Crazy" by Luther Allison & The Blue Nebulae, "Help Me" by Junior Wells, "I Wonder Why" by Jimmy Dawkins, "Too Much Alcohol" by JB Hutto & His Hawks, "So Many Roads So Many Trains" by Otis Rush, "Long Distance Call" by Muddy Waters, "Off The Wall" by James Cotton Band, "Juanita" by Big Joe Williams, "Jelly Jelly Blues" by Shirley Griffin, "I Feel So Good" by Magic Sam, "Call It Stormy Monday" by T-Bone Walker, "Death Letter Blues" by Son House, "Key To The Highway" by Sam Lay, and "Mojo Hand" by Lightnin Hopkins. Unesco Collection, 1955. New Copy 3 CDs ... $20.99 29.97
An amazing 3CD set, put together from mid 50s recordings by Unesco – and featuring one of the richest looks at Indian music we've ever heard! The collection is much more ethnographic than the better-circulated Indian recordings of the time – and although the word "classical" is used in the title, the overall feel is often quite rootsy – filled with earthy percussion, raw vocal passages, and some especially captivating use of flute! Original material was issued by the Ducretet Thomson label in 1955 – but this set features a full 3CDs' worth of titles – 33 tracks in all, with a great sense of variety. CD

Cook, 1958. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
Nothing too dirty about this jazz – especially considering that the "south" in the title is actually the Caribbean – an overlooked hotbed of creative improvisational activity! The album's similar to some of the other Caribbean jazz recorded by Cook Records at the time – highly rhythmic, with a somewhat exotic feel – but the music here is also a bit more conventionally jazz-based at times, with echoes of older swing and trad modes mixed in with rougher percussion on the bottom. There's some great sax parts at times – nice and snakey – and titles include "Serenade", "Kiss Me In the Country", and "Mme Kilio" by Cyril Diaz; "Vicki" and "Cook's Cooking" by Johnny Gomez, "My Salty Sin" and "Choro" by John Buddy Williams, "All Of Me" by Conrad Jones, and "Jungle Blues" by Lorna Pierre. SWP (Netherlands), 2020. New Copy 4CD ... $38.99
A wealth of recent recordings from the SWP label – an ethnographic powerhouse who are really furthering the sorts of material initially captured by earlier labels like Folkways or Ocora! The style here is very much like the latter – very faithful to the presentation, and very well-recorded – and there's also a clear social mission to really push deeper and farther – in this case well into the eastern side of Zambia's Luangwa province, which includes some musical styles and cultures that have never been recorded before! The set is huge – 4CDs with a tremendous amount of music – presented in a very cool book-styled cover, with copious notes – and separately themed CDs, with titles that include Southern Province Mix, Leya Ceremony & Songs, The Complete Kalonda Band Recordings, and Chikunda Nsenga Soli Cewa. ✨✧ Rupert ClemendoreLe Jazz Trinidad ... CD
Cook, Late 50s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An amazing record from the legendary Cook label – billed in the cover as "patois jazz" – but with a sound that's surprisingly sophisticated overall! Rupert Clemendore works here in a mix of piano, vibes, bass, and lots of cool percussion – in a style that's somewhere between the music of Moondog and early small group sides from Sun Ra – tunes that are often very rhythmic at the core, but with an earthy sort of orientation that's quite unique – and a way of hitting sounds and styles that's quite hard to pinpoint! The notes refer to the music as "sophisticated jazz with a pixie beat" – and that's not far off, given the mix of modernism and lightness in Rupert's style. Really wonderful, and quite unique – with titles that include "Offbeat", "Eastern Conga", "Mambo Chop Suey", "Mambo Ebonier", "Doris Oh", "Drummer's Mood", and "Clem's Confusion". CD

✨✧ Wall MatthewsSpine River – The Guitar Music Of Wall Matthews 1967 to 1981 ... LP
Tompkins Square, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime solo guitar work from Wall Matthews – a musician who's maybe best known for his work in the group Entourage, who issued two 70s albums on Folkways – although that group is also pretty darn obscure too! Matthews has a great sound here – a solo acoustic mode that's filled with experimental elements, but also very down to earth – part of the 60s legacy of Robbie Basho and John Fahey, but also graced with a chromatic sensibility that points the way towards the direction of William Ackerman. Those references are all pretty huge in our mind, and very well-attached here – on a beautiful set of tracks that should get Wall a much larger place in the acoustic underground. Titles include "Spine River", "The Doves Of Venus", "Wendy's Piece", "The Dance In Your Eye", "Roping", "Kotokes", and "Walk In A Country Rain". LP, Vinyl record album

Four Flies (Italy), 1978. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great set of Italian electronics – a set that's maybe known better to Americans than most of the generation, due to a surprising 70s release on Folkways Records! Yet this set is quite different than the more academic electronics that usually grace that label – and echo more that shift towards moogier modes that would really crest in the Italian clubs of the next decade – still here more in a sound library mode, but turned towards nice little tunes that move between spacey instrumentals and keyboard groovers! Gianni Safred plays a range of different instruments – minimoog, polymoog, Arp Odyssey, Fender Rhodes, and Roland keyboards – layering the electronics in a way that's nice and warm, and surprisingly soulful at most moments too. Tracks include "Jazz Computer", "Future City Traffic", "Electronic Brain", "Supermind", "The Life To Come", "Disco Satellite", "Autumn 2001", and "Robot Party". LP, Vinyl record album

Whoa! An incredible, gargantuan 8 CD box set of the Louvin Brothers complete catalog for the Capitol, Apollo, Decca, and MGM labels in the late 50s and early 60s! Ira and Charlie are probably the greatest country harmony duo of all time – and the set is way too huge to even think about soaking up in a single sitting – but it's an essential slice of history for the completists out there, and thanks to Bear Family many of these tracks that might have disappeared forever live on thanks to the magic of CD! 220 songs – including tons of alternate versions from throughout the years, many of which still have the crackly quality you have on a lot of Folkways recordings – the kind that only contribute to the sincerity of the recordings rather than standing out as a flaw.
