Akira ObuchiGangsta Rap Disc Guide – Lyrics Focus On Thug & Gangsta Life ... Book
Ele-King (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $29.99
A special sort of Japanese disc guide – one that focuses on the key recordings in gangsta rap from the 80s onward – served up here in the usual format of these publications! As you might guess, the text is all in Japanese – but the book is filled with hundreds of album covers, along with artist, title, label, and release date all in English – so that even if you can't read the language, you can still understand the contents! There's a huge amount of titles in here that go way past the big hits and the obvious – and the book is laid out geographically, then chronologically – which makes for a great way to group these records together. Images are full color throughout, and there's some nice bonus pages of record covers too – and the book is 192 pages, softcover. And hey, if you use Google translate, you might be able to read some of the Japanese text too! Book

Mansur BrownShiroi ... CD
Black Focus (UK), 2018. Used ... $7.99
A fantastic debut from guitarist Mansur Brown – a player you might recognize from earlier work with Kamaal Williams – now stepping out on his own, but with production from Williams on his own label too! Brown's got this incredibly open approach to the guitar – a flurry of styles on the strings, with echoes that go back maybe to the great Canadian player Sonny Greenwich, with a few all-over-the-strings echoes of Stanley Jordan – but set to a mode that's complete contemporary London – these moody, airy soundscapes that have lots of abstract elements that provide a nice contrast to the sharper presence of the guitar! Brown definitely solos and has a jazz-based sensibility – but the record's very different than a standard jazz guitar record too – really mixing up modes, a bit like some of the recent Blue Note generation – or maybe like some of Mansur's labelmates on Black Focus too. Titles include "The Beginning", "Godwilling", "Me Up", "Shiroi", "Motions", "Simese", "Flip Up", and "Hands Tied". CD

Bobbi RogersTommy Wolf Can Really Hang You Up The Most ... LP
Focus, 1980. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A lovely little tribute to one of our favorite songwriters of all time – the lyrical genius Tommy Wolf, whose compositions were first championed back in the 50s and 60s by Bob Dorough, Jackie & Roy, and Blossom Dearie! Wolf's got a wonderful way with a twist of a phrase – playful, but never too silly – just freshly original in a world of overdone standards, and a reminder that creative American songwriting didn't stop with Cole Porter and Harold Arlen! Bobbi's voice has a warmly sweet quality that makes for a slightly different approach to the material than others before her – and backing on the record is by a piano trio led and arranged by Chick Cicchetti. Titles include "There Are Days When I Don't Think Of You At All", "Say Cheese", "I'm Alright Til You Touch Me", "It's Nice Weather For Ducks", "You Smell So Good", "I've Never Been Anything", and "A Face Like Yours". A great album from guitarist Chuck Wayne – not the hippest player in the world, but a player with an incredible ear and an amazing tone! This obscure set was recorded in Nola's Penthouse in the early 60s – and it's got Chuck in a trio, playing warm and chromatically, in a mode that's not dissimilar from Tal Farlow. Titles include "Askaterine", "Down The Road", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Thank The Lord", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". LP, Vinyl record album

Kamaal WilliamsWu Hen ... CD
Black Focus, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
Keyboardist Kamaal Williams is light years ahead of his first record here – and that's saying a lot, as that album was already pretty darn far-reaching! The music still has plenty of Fender Rhodes and keyboards, and other jazz elements that include tenor from Quinn Mason – but the overall sound is much more cosmic and complex, especially in the rhythms – which often seem to be responding to organic pulsations or magnetic shifts. Not that the album doesn't swing at points – because it definitely does – but as Kamaal states proudly in the notes, "you are now listening to and supporting an original movement from the London underground" – a comment that we couldn't have put better ourselves! The set also features great drums from Greg Paul, strings from Miguel Atwood Ferguson, harp from Alina Bzhezhinska, and a bit of vocals from Lauren Faith – on titles that include "Street Dreams", "Toulouse", "Big Rick", "Pigalle", "Early Prayer", "One More Time", "1989", and "Save Me". Bilal AbdurahmanEchoes Of Timbuktu & Beyond In Congo Square ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

A&M/Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A sweet 80s groover throughout – the only album we've ever seen by this keyboard-heavy quintet, served up in a flurry of catchy catchy tunes! Keys on the set are handled by producer/arranger Michael Stokes – who's very clearly in charge of the voices of the group – giving them real focus on the album's mix of uptempo groovers and a few mellower cuts, sometimes even underscoring things with a groove that's verging on electro! Stokes also handles the keyboards, but Patrice Rushen is on the set on piano – warming things up nicely – and titles include the great midtempo stepper "Give Me Your Love", plus "Bottom Line", "Rise Up", "Keep On Rockin", "My Sunshine", "Coo Coo Kachu", and "I Never Thought I'd Love Again". CD also features a bonus extended mix of "Give Me Your Love". CD

The brilliant debut of Aesop Rock – a set that initially circulated as a homemade CDr, but which has gone on to become the stuff of legend over the years! There's a raw, sinister vibe here that shows just how much Aesop and his generation were renewing the importance of the New York sound – stripping things down with a focus on lean production, and these really well-crafted vocals that have a density that's still pretty mindblowing after all these years! Titles include "Hold The Cup", "Sick Friend", "1000 Deaths", "Blue In The Face", "Odessa", "Same Space", and "Dry Spell". LP, Vinyl record album

Jan AkkermanTabernakel ... LP
Atco, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $5.99
Guitarist Jan Akkerman bridges many worlds here – deftly stepping between spare acoustic guitar modes and some much more dynamic electric ones – but all with a sense of care and vision that really makes the record come together! The set begins with a few themes from John Dowland, updated by Akkerman, but still played with an ancient sort of vibe – one that leads into some very cool fusion moments that mix centuries-old aesthetics with the modern – creating a sense of anachronism that really keeps things interesting. Gene Orloff handled some of the larger arrangements, but the focus is always on Akkerman's deft work on the guitar – and titles include "Britannia", "House Of The King", "Javeh", "Lammy", and "A Fantasy". Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

Alessandro AlessandroniFormula 1 Nell'Inferno Del Grand Prix ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... $18.99 29.99
One of the grooviest racing soundtracks we've ever heard – a set that's a lot more funky than some of the better-known racetrack film scores that were coming into the racks during the late 60s! The vibe here is almost a bit like some of the sound library material of Alessandro Alessandroni – lots of great melodic elements, wrapped around rhythms that are nice and slinky on the slower moments, and downright funky on the faster ones – mostly instrumental, but with just a bit of vocals at points from I Cantori Moderni – that very cool harmony group that Alessandroni used on many recordings. The instrumentation is never too complex, and the focus feels more small combo than some of the larger orchestrations on Italian scores at the time – served up here in an assortment of 20 tracks from the film! A really fantastic collaboration between two pioneers of African music – and a set that nicely opens both into the jazziest side of their talents! Hugh Masekela blows flugelhorn, and Tony Allen handles drums and plenty of percussion – and although both artists sing a bit, the main focus here is really on the instrumentation – as half the album's tracks are instrumentals, and there's plenty of room for solos over the really great rhythms in the mix! The lineup of players is great, too – tight, but with some nice surprises – including tenor from Steve Williamson, vibes from Lewis Wright, and keyboards from Joe Armon Jones – on titles that include "Robbers Thugs & Muggers", "Agbada Bougou", "Obama Shuffle Street Blues", "We've Landed", "Slow Bones", and "Never". Gene Ammons & Sonny StittWe'll Be Together Again ... LP
Prestige, 1961/1968. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Nothing fancy – but some great straight-ahead blowing from Stitt and Jug! The album's a quintet session, with John Houston piano, Buster Williams bass, and George Brown drums providing all the rhythm. But the real focus is on the twin-sax frontline – with Sitt taking up the alto on a few numbers, but mostly blowing tenor head to head with Jug. The album was supposedly recorded in 1961, but not issued until later in the 60s by Prestige – and it's right up there with the excellent work that the team were cutting at the time for Verve and Argo. Titles include "A Mess", "Water Jug", "New Blues Up & Down", "Red Sails In The Sunset", and "A Pair Of Red Pants". LP, Vinyl record album

AmnestyFree Your Mind – The 700 West Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me". Cesar AscarrunzCesar 830 ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Lost Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and an album that may well blow away better-known work by groups like Malo, Azteca, or El Chicano! The album's near-perfect right from the start – and brings in plenty of New York elements to the groove, thanks to the inclusion of a heady amount of jazz alongside the soul, Latin, and funk elements in the grooves! The legendary Teo Macero produced and arranged – and really takes a lot of care in the studio to focus the overall energy of the tremendous talents on the record – players who include Hadley Caliman on flute and tenor, Steve Marcus on soprano sax, Benny Velarde on timbales, and Francisco Aguabella on congas – plus the trio of Cesar, Mark Levine, and Merl Sanders on keyboards. Most numbers have this really full, flowing groove – jazzy, but with a strong emphasis on the rhythms – and often touched with some great work on guitar that echoes the Santana-inspired sound of the generation, yet never in a rock way at all. Linda Tillery sings vocals on a few numbers, but the main focus is definitely instrumental – and the whole album's great – with cuts that include "See Saw Affair", "Azucar", "Descarga", "The Devil & Montezuma", "Gotta Get Away", and "Bridges". The album that really broke the B52s out of the box – the one that took them from being an underground favorite in the clubs and the party scene, to being the kind of group that finally got the exposure they deserved! Of course, some of the help here comes from superproducers Nile Rodgers and Don Was – who really help the group focus on their hooks and crossover groove – all summed up perfectly on the album's hit "Love Shack" – a tune that still gets heavy play around the globe all these many years later. Other tracks include "Roam", "Channel Z", "Cosmic Thing", "Dry Country", "Topaz", "Follow Your Bliss", and "Bushfire". CD

B-52sMesopotamia ... LP
Warner, 1982. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A real shift for the B-52s – a record that's got quite a different sound than the group's first two full albums, and which really shows them as having a more diverse approach than might have been expected! The key change here is David Byrn – who's on the record as both a producer and performer, and who also opens the door to some percussion and horn players too – making for a sound that's a bit fuller, but in a subtle way – with a bit less of the retro guitar and keyboards that the group had at their start! The instrumental shift actually seems to work wonders for the vocals of Fred Schneider, who really pops out of the mix when he sings – and although the set's only an EP, it works well to focus in on this new sort of sound. Titles include "Loveland", "Mesopotamia", "Deep Sleep", "Throw That Beat In The Garbage Can", "Nip It In The Bud", and "Cake". LP, Vinyl record album

O Que Vier Eu Traco features arrangements by Pepeu – and titles include "Samba Fenomenal", "Sonho Alegre", "Ele Mexe Comigo", "Brasileirinha", "Belo Dia", "Tudo Blue", and "Eu Dou Baby Consuelo". P'ra Enlouquecer is great solo work from Baby Consuelo – a singer who first got her start in the hip group Os Novos Baianos, but who's stepping out on her own by the time of this late 70s solo set! The record's still got a nice sort of edge – some of the rootsier currents that Consuelo used with her previous group, maybe given a stronger MPB focus, but never in a way that's too commercial at all – thanks to strong use of acoustic instrumentation, on percussion, guitar, and reeds! The song styles are very inventive, too – leaping off with some complicated time changes and sharper edges than you might expect – on tracks that include "Ziriguidum", "Menino Do Rio", "E Amor", "P'ra Enloquecer", "La Vem O Brasil Descendo A Ladeira", and "Assanhado". The Baker Gurvitz Army maybe sounds better on Elysian Encounter than on their debut – partly because Ginger Baker and the Gurvitz brothers have really found their groove – but also because there's some great keyboard work on the set from Peter Lemer, who you might know from earlier jazz work too! Ginger's really wailing on drums and percussion – in a way that's somewhat different than both Cream, and his own records too – and those searing guitar lines from Adrian Gurvitz really help give the whole album a great sense of focus and power! Bar-KaysGotta Groove/Black Rock ... CD
Stax (UK), 1968/1970. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
2 killers from The Bar-Kays – a heavy funk spectacular all the way through! First up is Gotta Groove – amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! The cuts show a great ear for simple hooks and playful instrumental twists and turns – still with a bit of the trumpet used on Bar-Kays work of the past, but more in a groove that lets the guitar step out nicely with psychedelic soul undercurrents! Tracks include "In The Hole", "Funky Thang", "Grab This Thing", "Street Walker", "Humpin", and "Don't Stop Dancing To The Music (parts 1 & 2)". Black Rock is an album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound here is much heavier on the bottom – and really fuzzes up the guitar nicely at times to create a hipper sort of soul instrumental vibe! The rhythms are quite hip too – with echoes of the experiments in soul going on at Stax in the work of Isaac Hayes and others – and the album's miles away from the work that the group was laying down a few years before! Definitely one of the hardest-hitting Stax albums of the early 70s – and filled with great tracks like "You Don't Know Like I Know", "Dance To The Music", "Piece Of Your Peace", "Montego Bay", and "Baby I Love You". A great little gem from the Count Basie years on Verve – a tight little record that has Basie really reinventing his sound for the 50s – an album that's filled with short, uncomplicated tracks that have a surprisingly easy-going groove! The arrangements are swinging and tight, with that Hefti-styled focus on a core element that really moves the tunes along – delivered by some great solo work from players that include Joe Newman on trumpet, Henry Coker on trombone, and Marshall Royal on alto. Basie has plenty of space to tinkle the ivories in mellow soul lines, too – and tracks include "Sure Thing", "Why Not", "Fawncy Meeting You", "Bootsie", "Bunny", "Cash Box", and "Basie Talks". LP, Vinyl record album
(Verve Inc pressing – with trumpeter logo and deep groove! Cover has a small split on the top seam and light surface wear.)

Benitez & ValenciaImpossible Love Songs From 60s Quito ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99
Beautiful work from the Ecuadorian duo of Gonzalo Benitez and Luis Alberto Valencia – a duo who have this wonderfully heartbreaking way of putting over a tune – often working with just spare accompaniment on acoustic guitar, which really lets you focus on the amazing quality of their vocals! In a way, the approach is similar to the Mexican and Cuban trio style – but with just a duo handling the harmonies, and usually just one guitar in the mix, the sound is even more up-close and personal – very much out of time, despite the 60s reference in the title – with a kind of ancient quality that really gets at the heart of love, loss, and life. The package is beautifully done – in the best Honest Jons tradition – and titles include "Las Tres Marias", "Dicha", "Sombras", "Quimera", "Suplica", "Lamparilla", "Tus Ojeras", "Limosna", "Invocacion Sentimental", "Nocturno", "Desesperacion", and "Imploracion Indigena". Verve/Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Don't think "rock", think "groove" – because oud player John Berberian takes his instrument into some very groovy territory here – mixing its Mid-East roots with a sweet array of modal rhythms and psychedelic elements – all of which make for an album that's even trippier than you'd guess from its cover! The album's one of the few "jazz meets world" sets that really gets things right – bringing together different global elements to come up with a sound that's wonderfully new and fresh – and which moves the whole thing way past its roots in Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and North African styles! Joe Beck plays some great electric guitar on the record – but the main string focus is on the oud, which Berberian uses with this exotic tinge that rivals the instrument in the hands of Ahmed Abdul-Malik on his own albums like this. The lineup also includes tenor and other reeds from Souren Baronian, plus other percussion, and nice use of electric bass to hold the whole groove together – and titles include "The Oud & The Fuzz", "Tranquility", "Chem-oo-Chem", "Iron Maiden", "Flying Hye", "3/8=5/8=8/8", and "The Magic Ground". Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
A dream of a record from the LA spiritual underground of the 70s – and one of the only records we've ever seen from reedman Gary Bias! The date's got a soulful depth that makes it one of the most compelling albums on the legendary Nimbus label – a rhythmic pulse that's often modal, and a sense of spiritualism in the solos that often has Gary stretching out strongly on alto, soprano sax, or flute – yet always with an inherent focus, and strong sense of direction! Other players are equally great too – David Tillman on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Roberto Miranda and John Heard on bass, and Fritz Wise on drums – and the tunes are wonderful original numbers that mark Bias as an extremely strong voice in jazz – one that should have gotten better exposure over the years. The album's got a great Strata East sort of vibe – and titles include "As Children Play", "East 101", "Asiki", "Arthur's Vamp", and "Dear Violet". LP, Vinyl record album

An obscure set from the glory days of the Krautrock scene, but a set that's maybe a lot more hard rock than some of its more proggy German contemporaries! The songs are still nice and long, but they've also got a lot more focus too – topped with English lyrics, sewn tight with searing guitars, and driven strongly on most numbers by some really tremendous bass and drums – all at a level that matches some of the bigger British groups experimenting in this sort of territory at the time, but without every fully getting its due, as it was trapped on the other side of the Channel with smaller release – different than if it had gotten more global exposure on a label like Vertigo, which would have also been a good fit. Although titled after one of their early albums, this "golden classics edition" features 13 cuts from different releases that Black Ivory did for the Today label in the early 70s. Nearly all tracks feature heavenly east coast soul production from the great Patrick Adams, and the tracks on the CD focus most strongly on the group's ballad/harmony style, instead of the uptempo material that became more dominant in their mid 70's recordings. This is classic old school harmony material, and the set list is a winner all the way through, with titles like "Time Is Love", "You & I", "Our Future", "No If's And's Or But's", "It's Time To Say Goodbye", and "She Said She's Leaving". Fantasy/Decision, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99 17.98
Some of the sharpest, jazziest funk you'll ever hope to hear – a smoking collection of the legendary 70s work by The Blackbyrds on Fantasy Records! The group started as a jazz combo under Donald Byrd's supervision – right at a time when Byrd was making his own fantastic funky records in the 70s – but working for the Bay Area Fantasy label, they really took off into an amazing groove that was all their own – still informed by jazz, but free to open up to lots of funk and soul elements too – sometimes with vocals in the lead, sometimes more focus on the kinds of solos that always set them apart from all their contemporaries! The cuts have some wonderful keyboard work from a young Kevin Toney – who's gone onto a lot of fame over the years – and production on all cuts is either by Larry Mizell, Donald Byrd, or George Duke – key 70s jazz funk forces who keep things mighty tight in the studio! The package features work from all Blackbyrds albums of the 70s – including the Cornbread Earl & Me soundtrack, and the Night Grooves remix set – and the package features 25 titles that include "Enter In", "Party Land", "Do It Fluid", "Gut Level", "Summer Love", "I Need You", "The Baby", "Blackbyrds' Theme", "City Life", "Rock Creek Park", "Walking In Rhythm", "A Hot Day Today", "Wilford's Gone", "One Gun Salute", "Supernatural Feeling", "Mysterious Vibes", and "Soft & Easy". This set is possibly one of Blackman's best from the Muse Records years – thanks to a top-shelf quartet that includes Gary Bartz on alto and soprano sax, Kenny Barron on piano, and Ron Carter on bass – a great trio even on their own, but given a nice sense of focus through Blackman's drums. As usual, Blackman penned some great originals for the date – and the setting is an especially nice one for Bartz, who's really given a lot of space for great solo work on the set. Luv N' Haight/Ubiquity, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.98
A massive amount of rare work from East Bay funk maestro Eugene Blacknell – an artist who never cut a full album, but managed to record a lot of great funky tracks over the years! This package is the first ever full length set to focus on Eugene's work, and it's a treasure trove of guitar-heavy groovers – starting with some rough-edged, raw R&B-styled funk – then moving into some fuller party funk and boogie-styled numbers! Eugene's guitar is fully in the lead on most tracks – and the vibe of the later work is in a space that's somewhere between Bootsy Collins and Shuggie Otis – a very good place to be, in our opinion. The package was done in collaboration with Eugene's son, and features rare singles, remastered cuts, and even some exclusive and live tracks that have never seen the light of day before. The set features a whopping 25 tracks in all, all with great notes on Eugene's music and story – and titles that include "Cousin John", "Mo Self", "Jump Back", "Getting Down", "The Trip", "Dance To The Rhythm", "For The Sake Of Love", "Jive Kinda Friends", "Wah Wah Funk", "Space Funk", "Don't Stop Now", "Grov-ve Monkey", and even a few rare radio spots! Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $8.99
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD

"Blues" might be a surprising word for the title of an album by Paul Bley – especially given his modern inclinations – but the term definitely fits here, as this set of solo piano performances by Bley has a wonderfully moody, mellow quality – and a surprising amount of soul at times too! Paul's always had his warmth – although it usually comes across in more lyrical passages – but here, there's a richer focus on the left side of the piano, which opens up the bottom, and makes for some wonderful core sounds as Bley expresses himself more nimbly on the right. A beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! A really fantastic album from Jaimie Branch – one that's even more powerful than the first Fly Or Die set – which is saying a heck of a lot, given that that record hit most of us with a pretty hard punch! The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. A great bit of funky roots rock from Brethren – a group we only know from this one debut album, but who really knock it out of the park throughout! There's a quality here that would have been right at home on Capricorn Records, but Brethren are also maybe less tied to southern modes overall – as they work with a sharpness that follows some of that early 70s spirit of themes that had moved west to the coast, and gotten a bit more focus – and the instrumentation is superb throughout! Dr John plays keyboards on the record, but the group are really great themselves, especially on some of the more jamming moments. Our favorite track is the drum-heavy instrumental "Success Band Oil" – but the vocal cut "Outside Love" also has a great break at the beginning – and it's no surprise that the record was sampled by Lord Finesse and the Beatminerz. The record has a tremendous amount of fire and focus – especially on the part of Powell, who could sometimes falter in a European setting – and although Byas' horn might seem a contrasting choice for Bud, he really burns with a lot of energy here – arcing, soaring, and turning with lines that show that his talents hadn't dimmed at all out of the American limelight. As always with his few productions from the time, Cannonball shows a great deal of sensitivity and patience with the players – probably a key factor of the success of the set. Also noteworthy is the rest of the group – which includes Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include "Jeannine", "Just One Of Those Things", "All The Things You Are", "I Remember Clifford", and "Jackie My Little Cat". LP, Vinyl record album

Calibro 35Post-Momentum EP ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 28.99
A short step forward for Calibro 35 – but a damn funky one too! The set's a follow-up to the previous Momentum album, and it shows some strong new territory after the dark days of 2020 – with a leadoff track that adds in rhymes from Ensi E Ghemon to the core cinematic funk of "Stan Lee" – presented here in two alternate versions, one of which is instrumental! Things get nice and lean on "Digi-Tails" and "Stars & Strips Chirps &Bleeps" – both of which feel like the Calibro 35 groove is stripping down in a really great way – with a very strong focus on funky drums and keyboards! Other tracks include "Being A Robot Is Awesome" and "Artificial Black Moon" – additional instrumental funky nuggets, with a nice blend of 70s funk and a few 80s instrumental elements. Pete CandoliFor Pete's Sake ... LP
Kapp, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the few sessions cut as a leader by trumpeter Pete Candoli – a great west coast talent who was often lumped into groups with his more famous brother Conte, but who really shines here in this simple, unobstructed set! The album features a core group of Gene Cipriano on tenor, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Bobby Gibbons on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – plus additional instrumentation from track to track by players that include Howerd Roberts, Ted Nash, Harry Klee, and others. The general groove is west coast cool bop – never too artsy, and with a good focus on short and economical solos – very much in the Bethlehem mid 50s mode. Titles include "Sposin", "Old Black Joe", "Who's Sorry Now", "Buttons & Bows", "Ice Cream Truck", and "The Skater's Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Kansas/Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 38.99
A gem of a record from the Italian prog scene of the early 70s – exactly the kind of well-crafted album that really set the scene apart from the rest! There's a real care with the instrumentation here – lots of piano, organ, and other keyboards from Mario Barigazzi, who also handles arrangements – music that moves with the sharpness of musicians skilled in other styles, but the kind of immediacy demanded by the prog underground of the time – often with an instrumental focus, but very different than jazz fusion too! Other players handle tenor, flute, guitar, and percussion – and there's a small bit of vocals as well, on titles that include "Particolare Amore", "Io Piu Te", "Orfeo 2000", "Anatomia Di Una Notte", "Why", and "Corri Corri Corri". Flood Gallery, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 17.95
A fantastic look at the rise, fall, and rise again of the record store in the United Kingdom – a wonderful chronicle that shows just how important the shops were in helping to shape the musical scene over the decades, and were often places that did a heck of a lot more than just selling music! And before you make any assumptions, this isn't one of those warm and fuzzy "gee, aren't record stores great" sort of books – and instead, it's a really lively history, and one that brings together stories of key shops in different scenes all over the country, and documents their changing role in the music – often with a focus on shops that either launched their own labels, or helped other labels really find a new audience in British listeners. The book is softcover, 292 pages, and also includes dozens of black and white vintage images of record shops and records! Book

Warner/KTI (Japan), 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the coolest records ever from guitarist Philip Catherine, and one of the funkiest too – thanks to a really sharp edge that you won't find on some of his other albums, and lots of Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin too! Some of Catherine's other records of the 70s were a bit laidback or noodly – but this set's got a strong, soulful drive all the way through – a nice focus that may well come from the production of Sacha Distel, himself a onetime guitarist! But the group's just got things right on the money, right from the start – with some very strong funky drums from Freddy Rotheir, plus trombone from Jiggs Wigham and both bass and flute from Freddy Deronde. Titles include "Bassline", "Let's Put It Like This", "Stream", "Foire", "Face", "Jeux Interdits", and "Memphis Talk". Jimmy CavalloJimmy Cavallo Rocks ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
Great work from Jimmy Cavallo – an early tenor star from the years when the saxophone was almost more important to the sound of rock music than the guitar! Jimmy draws plenty of inspiration from R&B on these tracks – and although he sings in the lead, he also takes a break for a nice tenor solo on just about all the cuts – often keeping the spirit strong with the addition of a second saxophonist in the group! Most of these tracks were cut within a few short years for Coral Records – home to some surprising rockers back in the day (including Johnny Burnette!) – and the set then moves on to a few later recordings from a time when Cavallo's star had fallen from the limelight. As with the other titles in this series, the focus is on upbeat rockers from the postwar years – but unlike the others, most of this work is pretty darn obscure – every bit the kind of musical discovery we love from Bear Family! Titles include "Ha Ha Ha Blues", "Rock The Joint", "That's The Groovy Thing", "Let M Roll", "Leave Married Women Alone", "Foot Stompin", "Soda Shoppe Rock", "I'm With You", "Teenage Lover", "I Feel That Old Age Coming On", "Chicken Talk", "Dream Toy", and "Cherri Pie". Warner/Odc (Italy), 1980. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99 39.99
The classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. The set's filled with sharp rhythms and sweet jazzy changes – and titles include the classics "The Glow Of Love" and "Searching", both with Luther, plus "Lover's Holiday", "Angel In My Pocket", and "The End". This great 2LP set features a whole disc of bonus material – "Searching (12" Jim Burgess mix)", "Glow Of Love (12" promo long version)", "Searching (Tom Moulton mix)", and "It's A Girl's Affair (12" Mike Maurro classic disco rmx)". Stunning live material from the great Ray Charles – a 3CD set that brings together a wealth of stage performances from May of 1962, in setting that often lets us focus as much on Ray's incredible piano work as it does his trademark vocals! Charles' talents need no introduction from us, but they're in fantastic formation here – without some of the studio trappings that he was beginning to use in the 60s, and much more of the jazzy flourishes that he was using towards the end of his time at Atlantic Records – played here by a group that includes Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Hank Crawford on alto, and David Fathead Newman on tenor. The package features 52 live tracks – including "Blue Stone", "The Danger Zone", "From The Heart", "Margie", "One Mint Julep", "Doodlin", "Careless Love", "Hit The Road Jack", and "I Believe To My Soul". Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 25.99
A really rare slice of work from legendary UK singer Petula Clark – an artist you'll know best for her swinging pop records of the 60s, but who also cut a fair bit of music in other European languages too! Petula was huge on our shores with her "Downtown" hit in the mid 60s – but she also quickly too over other audiences too – and recorded not just in English, but in French, German, and Italian – the last of which is the focus here. This set is the first to bring together all of Petula's Italian singles – some of which feature songs that she never even recorded in English – and all of the work has the same bubbly, upbeat vibe that you'll know from her familiar songs – but nicely different here with the change in language, and with some surprising details of the recordings that you'll discover in the notes. The 2CD package has a surprising amount of tracks – 31 tunes in all – and titles include "La Frontiera", "Ciao Ciao", "Darling Cheri", "Se Mi Vuoi Amare", "Chariot", "Invece No", "Pagherai", "Gocce Di Mare", "Cara Velicita", "E Stato Il Vento", "Splendido", "Piccolo Baby", "Settembre Mi Riportera", and "Cosa Cherchi Nel Mondo". Elektra, 1983. Very Good+ 2LP ... $9.99
A massive double-length live album from the Griffith Park project of Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke – one that expands wonderfully on the warmth and soul of their first studio album! Like that classic, this one features an all-acoustic lineup that has Corea on piano and Clarke on upright bass, both playing with a wonderful sense of imagination and creativity – in ways that are quite different than their better-known electric work of a few years before. Joe Henderson's tenor and Freddie Hubbard's trumpet are both great too – played with some sharp modern tones at a few points, but mostly in that flowing, soulful style that both players were hitting at the time. Lenny White's drums are light years away from his mid 70s fusion work – sharply focused, but always with a nod towards his mighty range of timings – and all players come together beautifully, with almost the same sort of blend of freedom and focus as the VSOP group. Tracks are all quite long, and titles include "Happy Times", "October Ballad", "Why Wait", "Guernica", and "I Mean You". LP, Vinyl record album

Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". The later years of Dennis Coffey at Westbound Records – tunes that show a bit of a move away from the rougher funk of his roots, but which are still filled with plenty of sharp-edged work on guitar! Coffey's groove here is more in the club vein that Westbound hit in the mid 70s – upbeat, uptempo rhythms that drew strongly on the label's earlier legacy in funk – but pushed a groove more towards the popular disco styles of the time! Yet Coffey's tunes are never throwaway disco – and from the perspective of these many decades later, they're really just fast funk numbers with a bit of strings – still heavy on tightly snapping rhythms, and filled with loads of beautiful guitar lines from Dennis. Some of the most spiritual sounds we've ever heard from Alice Coltrane – an obscure early 80s album that's done in a very meditative style – one that has the lady on both organ and vocals, working alongside a larger string section at times! The approach is a bit like some of Coltrane's most ambitious records for Impulse, but shows an even deeper journey into the spirit – filled with the ideas that Alice had been parceling out in smaller bits on her bigger label releases of the 70s, really given center stage focus here. The organ work alone is great – often very spare and minimal – working as flowing waves of sound that inform the vocals wonderfully. This material was originally only issued on cassette back in the early 80s, with very limited circulation – finally given full release! An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. John ColtraneColtrane Plays The Blues (with bonus track) ... CD
Atlantic, 1960. Used ... $2.99
Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of simple vamp that might characterize a blowing session for other labels, but which still has a strong degree of focus for this date. Rhythm is from McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and there's some great sharp edges from Coltrane here, especially on the numbers that feature tenor sax in the lead. Side one of the album features more standard bluesy vamps, but side two really opens up into some tremendous numbers that show the first great hint of modal energy – rollingly enchanting titles that still leave us breathless after all these years! Tracks include "Blues To Elvin", "Blues To Bechet", "Mr Syms", "Mr Day", and "Mr Knight". Also features the bonus track "Untitled Original". CD

A beautiful meeting of two major talents from the left end of jazz – recorded in the early 60's when both were working for Atlantic! Despite the "avant garde" title, this set is straighter than you'd expect – very much in the spirit of Coltrane's work for the label, but with perhaps some of the more angular styles that Cherry was laying down with Ornette Coleman at the time. The session has Coltrane joining Ornette's group of Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell – save for a few numbers that feature Percy Heath on bass instead of Haden. The set includes great readings of Ornette's "The Blessing", "The Invisible", and "Focus On Sanity", and Coltrane plays both soprano sax and tenor! LP, Vinyl record album
