The book is a fantastic follow up to the first volume – and like that one, features rare flyers, posters, and ads for some of the underground Chicago house music events and venues – some of them legitimate entertainment venues, but others more obscure hole-in-the-wall places – including some churches that were surprising hosts to house music events back in the day! The book has no text, but features full color reproductions of dozens of flyers and posters – most of them very detailed and vibrant, with loads of information on obscure artists, DJs, and other forces helping to make house music happen – often emblazoned with addresses that will come as a real surprise if you only know the Chicago of the 21st Century! Wonderful work from Brook Benton – and the kind of record that always gets overlooked in discussions of southern soul, but which is proof that Benton's always been a key force in the genre! Brook virtually invented the style with his earlier country soul recordings – and by the time of this 1970 set, he's in perfect form vocally – and working under some wonderfully sophisticated arrangements by Arif Mardin. The result is the kind of cross-genre record that Brook could do effortlessly – and which should have made him huge, but instead kind of got him left behind by all the other folks who were copping his style. Yet with the strength of a record like this, we'll take that overlooked fame as still OK – because the set's a gem just waiting to be discovered by later generations like us! Formica may seem like an everyday surface to some – but at the time of its creation, it was a pretty revolutionary development – one that allowed household and business spaces to step free from longer-term care – giving the workers and residents lots more time to pursue their hopes and dreams! That bright promise of Formica is presented beautifully here – in a lovely history of the product, complete with dozens of vintage images that range from magazine ads to promotional flyers – to some higher-end projects in Formica from the art world! A treasure trove of images from pre-Revolutionary Cuba – posters, flyers, advertisements, and images of other ephemera from a time when US citizens used to pop down for a weekend in Havana! The book is filled with photos of rare objects from famous hotels and nite spots too – glassware, souvenirs, and even cigar wrappers – next to lots of other images that resonate strongly with the classic vibe of the cover! There's some introductory text and other introductions to the images too – the authors clearly know how to present the material – but the book is very heavy on images, and this softcover edition is full color throughout, and 165 pages. A really unusual collection, and one that really captures a key musical moment in the London scene – a time when all sorts of underground activity was happening on the rave scene, but people didn't have the world of cell phones and internet to connect! So instead, folks got news out about these less-than-legal happenings by tapping into the mainstream – often with posters and flyers, but also through radio advertisements that would pop up often on pirate radio – often buried in some sort of mix of house cuts or jungle tracks! You'll hear plenty of those on here, but served up with these spoken ads that sneak in and tell about all sorts of events – almost three dozen of them, all with a blaring sense of fidelity that really takes us back to a time when radio was the most important way we found out about new and underground sounds. There's plenty to love here if you're a fan of the darker sounds of the London sound in the mid 90s – especially the world of jungle and early drum n bass! CD
