✨✧ Les BaxterMaster Of The World ... LP
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A real oddity – a soundtrack on Vee Jay records, the label best known for their groundbreaking work in soul, blues, and jazz. Even stranger, the score is for a schlocky Vincent Price film, based on a Jules Verne story – written by Les Baxter, in the flowery style he used for some of his late 50s, non-exotic work at Capitol. The album is performed by the 100 Men, directed by Cal Carter of Vee Jay – and titles include "Topage", "Flight Concerto", "Philadelphia", "Drifting Clouds", and "Over The Rocks". Nice painted cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing with deep groove.)

Edson XAfrican Vibes – The New Beats ... CD
Azul (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $14.99
Really great work from this up and coming Brazilian beatmaker – and a record that really lives up to the promise of its title! The style here is heavy on African influences – often mixing together live percussion and acoustic instrumentation with tighter rhythm programs and contemporary club styles – all somewhat in the mode of some of the Afro Funk revival work that's sprung out of Paris in the last decade or so. But Edson X does way more here than just copy the core grooves of Fela – and his African Vibes spread well across the continent in their search for inspiration – usually mixing in a fair bit more vocal passages than other records of this type. Titles include "African Fields", "The Master", "Freedom", "Celebration Day", "Lion", "Gods Dance", "Trabaia Nego (rmx)", and "Flight 808 (rmx)". CD

✨✧ Oliver NelsonSkull Session ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic transformation of the Oliver Nelson sound of the 60s – a large ensemble record that takes all the soul of his earlier groove, and reworks it with a more electric vibe for the 70s! Nelson's at the height of his powers here – working brilliantly as a leader and arranger, to open the door for strong sounds from younger players like Mike Wofford and Lonnie Liston Smith on keyboards, and the great Dennis Budimir on guitar! The record's unlike most of what you'll hear on Nelson's other albums – even his other Flying Dutchman work of the time – as it's got loads of wonderful keyboard moments, and even some moog and Arp as well. Titles include "Skull Session", "125th And 7th Ave", "Flight For Freedom", "Baja Bossa", and "Dumpy Mama". CD
(Part of the Flying Dutchman 1000 Master Collection!)

Brian EnoApollo – Atmospheres & Soundtracks (2LP version – with bonus tracks) ... LP
EG/Capitol, 1983. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
An airy, atmospheric classic from Brian Eno – as you might guess from the title – a record that fits in very strongly with his initial Ambient series of albums, but which was also used to accompany a documentary film on the Apollo space flights! Despite that soundtrack use, though, the work is far more Eno than anything else – hardly cinematic in the conventional sense, and shaped nicely with help from Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois, both key collaborators in the decade. Some of the richer tracks almost preface a 4AD generation to come, but still have all the best Eno charms – and titles include "Under Stars", "The Secret Place", "Matta", "Signals", "An Ending (Ascent)", "Under Stars II", "Drift", "Silver Morning", "Deep Blue Day", "Weightless", "Always Returning", and "Stars". 2LP version features a complete bonus album titled For All Mankind – 11 more instrumentals packaged here with a remastered version of the Apollo album, and a booklet of notes! ✨✧ Booker LittleBooker Little & Friend (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Bethlehem (Japan), 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic sextet session recorded in 1961, shortly before Booker Little's death – and filled with all the promise and power he ever packed into his playing! There's a sharp, angular groove to many of the numbers here – that mix of modern and hardbop that was cresting best in the early 60s Blue Note generation – and which echoes some of the work that Little had done with Max Roach in the years before this date. The lineup's filled with great players to help Book realize his strongest musical vision – Julian Priester on trombone, George Coleman on tenor, Don Friedman on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and although the set's issued on the sometimes-staid Bethlehem label, it's got all the sharper edges of an early 60s date on a label like Impulse or Candid! Titles include "Matilde", "Booker's Blues", "Forward Flight", and "Victory and Sorrow". CD features 2 bonus alterntaes of "Looking Ahead". CD
(Out of print, 2010 Japanese pressing with K2 mastering and 2 bonus tracks.)

✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – The Capsoul Label ... LP
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of funk and soul from one heck of a great little label – Columbus, Ohio's short-lived Capsoul imprint – only around for 5 years in the 70s, but home to a great flurry of indie singles! We first caught onto the label's brilliance with their funky classics "Hot Grits" by Elijah & The Ebonies and "Sock It To Em Soul Brother" by Bill Moss – but as this set wonderfully demonstrates, the label's got a heck of a lot more to offer – and all of it great! The label's brilliance has been masterfully unearthed by the crate-digging team at Numero Records – who've brought together 20 of the best Capsoul singles in a beautiful package that really tells the story of the tiny imprint, getting at the details and struggles that faced independent soul in the marketplace of the 70s. Way more than just a set of old singles, the set's a rich document of indie soul in one of the near-forgotten corners of the Midwest – filled with great tunes that may well have you booking the next flight you can find to Columbus! Titles include "Sock It To Em Soul Brother" by Bill Moss, "Pure Soul" by Elijah & The Ebonies, "Without Love" by Ronnie Taylor, "You're All I Need To Make It" by Johnson, Hawkins, Tatum, & Durr, "Hot Grits" by Elijah & The Ebonies, "Too Far Gone" by Four Mints, "I Want To Be Ready" by Kook Blues, "Go On Fool" by Marion Black, and "Number One" by Bill Moss. VariousCircles – Mixed By Jazzanova ... CD
Brownswood/Talkin' Loud (Japan), 1998. Used ... $19.99
Very cool compilation series that has some of the world's best DJs selecting classic groovers from the back catalog of smaller Polygram labels – like MPS, Brownswood, and Talking Loud. This volume was picked by Jazzanova of Compost Records fame, and it's a stellar batch of 21st Century grooves that brings together tracks from around the world in a swirling mix of music that had us sitting on the edges of our seats throughout the whole thing. The gamut is very wide, but Jazzanova manage to make the whole thing work through a masterful approach to seque. Titles include "Janela De Ouro" by Egberto Gismonti, "Yaad" by The Indian Jazz Trio, "Fedime's Flight" by Jazzanova, "You've Got It Bad Girl" by Quincy Jones, "Tema Teimoso" by Cal Tjader, "Statement" by George Duke, "We Who Are Not As Others" by 4 Hero, and even a great remix of "You're The Best Thing" by the Style Council. 74 minutes long, and a beautiful mix of music that perfectly sums up Brownswood's 21st Century soul approach! ✨✧ Donald ByrdBlack Byrd ... CD
Blue Note, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went onto forever change the face of jazz funk! After rumbling around for a few years attempting electric styles that really didn't fit his mode, Donald wisely hooked up with Larry, and hit a groove here that would carry him for many many years. The album's a masterpiece of soul – heavy production with great keyboards, creating a nice set of grooves that let Byrd solo over the top, sounding better than he had in years! Great all the way through, and with tracks that include "Flight Time", "Sky High", "Black Byrd", "Slop Jar Blues", "Mr Thomas", and the prophetically-titled "Where Are We Going?" CD

✨✧ VariousAlex Attias Presents Lilly Good Party Vol 2 – A Selection Of Really Really Good Grooves ... CD
BBE (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really joyous collection of grooves selected by Alex Attias – work that's maybe even more uplifting than the first volume in this series – and we really liked that one a heck of a lot too! Most of the tracks are relatively contemporary – selected by Attias from the work of underground colleagues over the past few years – and they're put together in a way that's even more than the sum of their mighty parts – the kind of careful ear for a well-selected track list that reminds us of the sort of albums that made us first fall in love with the BBE label many years back! In a world of dark corners and uncertainty, this is a set that will help you find the way forward, and have a hell of a good time doing it – thanks to tracks that include "Gwotet (Alex Attias LillyGood Party edit)" by David Murray & The Gwo-Ka Masters with Pharoah Sanders, "Open Up Your Mind (Honeycomb voc mix)" by Universal Tongues feat Elle, "Star Child Going Home" by MJ Lallo, "Freedom Flight (Alex Attias LillyGood Party edit)" by Mausiki Scales, "Children Of The World (Ben Brophy edit)" by Elements Of Life feat Josh Milian, "Touch" by 12 Senses, "Playground" by Martin Iverson with Sarai Jazz, "Everything (Yam Who rework)" by Dwayne Morgan, and "How Bad I Want Ya (GU peak tru time mix)" by Stacy Kidd with Peven Everett.
