There's a bit of the modernization of older modes that you'd fine in the music of Gilbert O'Sullivan – and although Danny's a very different artist, he's got a similar sort of charm here – working with arrangements from Gerry Shury that really fit the vibe of the songwriting. An album that will really blow your mind if you only know Christine McVie from her famous work in Fleetwood Mac – as the set's a debut solo effort, at a time when McVie was recording under the name of Christine Perfect as a singer in the UK blues band Chicken Shack! As with early Fleetwood Mac, there's a definite blues influence going on here – maybe no surprise, as the set was done by Mike Vernon for his Blue Horizon label – yet even at the start, McVie's got an approach that's very different than some of the more slavish blues-inspired singers on the scene – much more soulful overall, and already with plenty of hints at the superstardom to come! Spencer plays as much conventional guitar and piano as his usual slide, and also sings as well – in a mode that at times seems to echo older rock modes, and at others have more of a Brit blues inflection – working in a lineup that also features Mick Fleetwood on drums, Danny Kirwan on guitar, and John McVie on bass! Heck, Peter Green even plays a bit of banjo, and Stephen Gregory plays tenor too - on titles that include "Don't Go Please Stay", "Teenage Love Affair", "Here Comes Charlie", Linda", "Mean Blues", "String A Long", "Surfin Girl", and "Take A Look Around Mrs Brown". A fantastic album from this legendary British group – a bluesy rock combo who grew up in the same space as Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown, but who never fully got their due on this side of the Atlantic! The group here is a unique lineup that only recorded this one album – a trio with John Glascock on bass and Paul Hancox on drums – two players who give leader Stan Webb plenty of space in the spotlight, which means a very strong emphasis on his mindblowing work on guitar! Webb's a musician with the chops of contemporaries Eric Clapton and Peter Green, and you can definitely hear that here – and, like his contemporaries, Stan is also really taking the music way past its bluesy inspirations – using the trio to maybe bring in more of a hard rock vibe, yet never going too far in that direction either. A primitive early snapshot of The Germs circa '77 – and at the very dawn of punk rock as a bonafide genre! At this primordial early point, Darby Crash was going by Bobby Pyn, and the band was raw, raw, RAW – which they would always be, of course, but this early single and live cut make the later work sound like Fleetwood Mac. (OK, we're exaggerating for dramatic effect...a little.) Side one recorded in Pat Smear's parent's garage, and side two's live recording is uncredited on the sleeve, but is supposedly the song "Sex Boy" and recorded on the set of Cheech & Chong's Up In Smoke (!!!). 7-inch, Vinyl record
