✨✧ First ChoiceSo Let Us Entertain You ... LP
Warner, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A strong move into disco by First Choice – the group whose earlier Philly work had an undeniable impact on the genre! The sound here is smoother and more mature than the group's first few albums – a bit more in the fuller mode of the disco years, less pop overall – and done with some stone Philly production by Norman Harris and Stan Watson – and loads of great arrangements by Harris, Bobby Eli, and Vince Montana. Wonderful work all the way through – with none of the disco filler of other groups' albums from the time – and a deeply-crafted vocal sound that belies the trio's strong history in soul! Tracks include "Ain't He Bad", "Gotta Get Away (From You Baby)", "Yes, Maybe No", "I Got A Feeling", "Don't Fake It", and "Let Him Go". LP, Vinyl record album

"Newsy Neighbors" is a great early groover from First Choice! It's got a very tight feel that's similar to "Armed & Extremely Dangerous", with some good Bobby Eli arrangements, and a nice Norman Harris hook. "This Little Woman" is a nice easy ballad, of the sort the group didn't do that much after this point in their career. 7-inch, Vinyl record

VariousThis Is DJ's Choice Vol 2 – Keb Darge & Lucinda Slim ... CD
Unique (Germany), Used ... $6.99 9.99
A killer second volume in the This Is DJ's Choice series from Unique Germany – stretching back to the 50s for a raw & rumbling set of deep rare r&b, jumping blues, and rollicking rockabilly – floor shaking numbers selected by Keb Darge & Lucinda Slim! The (mostly) wayback approach is wonderful here, as the DJs choose some incredible stuff we've never heard before (and a couple well chosen newer numbers), and it's also a much different style than the more modern first volume in the series – which bodes well for some excellent, unpredictable volumes to follow! One similarity to the first volume is that it's unmixed with full length singles, and the titles include "I Want To Ramble" by John Lee Hooker, "You Ain't Such A Much" by Blanchie Thomas, "All Night Long" by Joe Houston, "Soulful Dress" by Sugar Pie Desanto, "Love Bandits" by Cadets, "Sinsitive Mind" by General Assembly, "That's What I Want" by Syng McGowan and more. 17 tracks on the CD. Hilariously, a question on the top of the back cover reads, "Why Is Dick Dale The Surfer's Choice?", and although we cannot speak for actual surfers, surf guitar fans need not be asked. Raw, rumbling, exciting surf rockers from the king – much of it recorded at Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, where Dale's legend was made. Includes "Surf Beat", "Misirlou Twist", "Peppermint Man", "Surfing Drums", "Shake N Stomp", "Let's Go Trippin" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Bill Evans' first famous appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival – a great 60s trio session, with Eddie Gomez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The tunes are mostly relatively familiar ones, but the ensemble on the set gives them a freer and more lyrical feel than you might expect – especially with DeJohnette on drums, who is a somewhat more powerful choice than some of Bill's other drummers of the 60s. Eddie Gomez is great, as always – with that round bass sound that we totally love – and titles include "Nardis", "Sleepin Bee", "Embraceable You", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "Mother Of Earl", "One For Helen", and "Walkin Up". Waylon JenningsLove Of The Common People/Hangin On/Only The Greatest/Jewels ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
A quadruple package of late 60s albums from Waylon Jennings – served up here in a single set! First up is Love Of The Common People – a tremendous late 60s album from Waylon Jennings – a set that really has the singer finally finding his groove, and working that amazing vocal style towards the kind of material that would soon help him become the stuff of legend! At some level, it could be said that there are currents of folk on the album – at least in the choice of some of the tracks, including the title cut – but throughout, Waylon Jennings has a way of turning things towards the darker side of the spectrum, and delivering things in a way that goes way beyond familiar RCA Nashville territory! Titles include "Money Cannot Make The Man", "I Tremble For You", "If The Shoe Fits", "The Road", "Love Of The Common People", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", and "Taos New Mexico". Hangin On has Jennings emerging as a singer with a depth that goes way beyond some of the more pop-oriented country acts handled by Chet Atkins on RCA, with a way of transforming tunes and really making them feel like they were all his own! Jennings did write a few of the words on the set, but most of the music is by well-chosen contemporary songwriters – spreading out with a slightly larger scope than some of the other RCA acts might handle – which might be an indication of the larger audience that Jennings would soon reach with his music! Titles include "The Crowd", "The Chokin' Kind", "I Fall In Love So Easily", "How Long Have You Been There", "Julie", "Looking At A Heart That Needs A Home", "Woman Don't You Ever Laugh At Me", and "Lock Stock & Teardrops". Only The Greatest is a damn near perfect batch of top notch honky tonk numbers from the late 60s! Waylon's distinctive voice works its magic on a bunch of great tunes, including honky tonk classics like "Only Daddy That'll Walk That Line", Harlan Howard's "California Sunshine", plus some song choices that steer towards countrypolitan, pop and folk, but really brought into Waylon's world regardless, via his incredible voice, which is at peak power at this point. Other titles include "Weakness In A Man", "Sorry (Breaks A Good Man Down)", "Christina", "Kentucky Woman", "Long Gone", "Wave Goodbye To Me", and "Too Far Gone". Jewels is a record with a very well-put title – as the set's filled with late 60s jewels by the amazing Waylon Jennings – tracks from a time before the singer was hitting as big as he should have, but which are perfect for digging out and loving again as the years go on! Jennings has an edge and darkness here that's so different than so many of his contemporaries – a quality that maybe resonates with Johnny Cash's best moments, but which has a focus here that avoids some of the mis-steps that could often be more frequent on Johnny's studio albums at the time – really rock-solid presentation throughout, as Waylon takes on tunes by Harlan Howard, Merle Haggard, and Dallas Frazier – and throws his own tune into the mix too. Titles include "New York City RFD", "Six Strings Away", "How Much Rain Can One Man Stand", "Today I Started Loving You Again", "If You Were Mine To Lose", and "See You Around. CD

Waylon JenningsWaylon/Just To Satisfy You/Country Folk With The Kimberlys ... CD
RCA/Morello (UK), 1969/1970. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A trio of pre-stardom albums from Waylon Jennings – brought together here in a single set! First up is Just To Satisfy You – fantastic early work from Waylon Jennings – exactly the kind of record that shows how the singer could burst out of the pack, even in a familiar setting! There's still a lot of Chet Atkins elements in the production, but Waylon really pushes all that aside with his upfront, honest vocal approach – so much so that even hits by others are completely transformed in his style! Titles include "Farewell Party", "Sing The Blues To Daddy", "Straighten My Mind", "Just To Satisfy You", and "Lonely Weekends" – plus duets with Anita Carter on "I Got You" and "Rings Of Gold". Next up is Country Folk – one of the most unusual albums ever recorded during the early RCA years of Waylon Jennings – a set that features backing vocals from the male/female quartet The Kimberlys – of the sort that you might have heard from the Anita Kerr Singers on a Chet Akins production – but tuned much more towards a style that suits Waylon well! There's none of the too-sweet modes that Kerr might bring into the mix – and there's also occasional female leads that appear for a bit, creating a sense of duet with that magnificent Jennings voice – further deepened by the great choice of material, too – really unusual tracks that aren't the sort that RCA was usually adding to country sessions at the time. Titles include Jimmy Webb's immortal "MacArthur Park", plus "These New Changing Times", "Come Stay With Me", "Cindy Oh Cindy", "Games People Play", "Mary Ann Regrets", "Let Me Tell You My Mind", "Long Way Back Home", and "A World Of Our Own". Last up is Waylon – pivotal work from Waylon Jennings – a record that has him really starting to show the maturity and individuality that would make his mid 70s hits so great! Production here isn't that different than before – Chet Atkins and Danny Davis are still at the helm in the studio – but Waylon himself has really blossomed, and gone from being just an already-great country singer to a mature male interpreter of tunes – able to bring his own spin to material from an array of well-chosen sources. Anita Carter duets with Waylon on two tracks – and titles include "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", "Don't Play The Game", "The Thirty Third Of August", "Yellow Haired Woman", "This Time Tomorrow (I'll Be Gone)", "Where Love Has Died", "I May Never Pass This Way Again", and "Just Across The Way". Waylon JenningsWhat Goes Around Comes Around/Music Man/Back On Black/Waylon & Company ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 22.99
Four full albums from Waylon Jennings – served up here in one double CD set! First up is What Goes Around Comes Around – Waylon Jennings' last album of the 70s, and a set that continues the superstar run he forged during the decade – delivered with that increasing power and focus that Jennings brought to his records as the years went on – still strongly country through and through, but with a quality that helped Waylon to really reach out and find audiences that some of his contemporaries couldn't touch! The material is really well-chosen, and fits that swagger that Jennings could bring to his vocals, but without ever pushing things too far – none of the hoke that could occasionally get in the way – on titles that include "I Ain't Livin Long Like This", "What Goes Around", "It's The World's Gone Crazy", "Old Love New Eyes", "Come With Me", and "Ivory Tower". Music Man is a set recorded at a time when Waylon Jennings had really reached superstardom – and was also finding a whole new ear for his music on the TV screen, thanks to his work on Dukes Of Hazzard! Think what you might about that show, Waylon's theme is a great one – and it's presented here along with a number of other well-chosen numbers that are delivered with a nicely understated sound overall – no attempt to try to force any sort of country rock agenda on Jennings, even when he's taking on the music of Steely Dan! And surprisingly, he does a pretty great job of that – reworking "Do It Again" into a completely different sort of song – heard here next to "It's Alright", "Storms Never Last", "Nashville Wimmin", "He Went To Paris", and "Good Ol Boys". On Black On Black, Waylon Jennings gets some great help from producer Chips Moman – who creates this laidback, rootsy groove that's perfect for the singer's sound – a move that's a wonderful choice, given that at this point in his career, Jennings could have gone for an arena-filling country rock sort of approach – but instead stays true to the kind of confident, up-close material that filled his classic albums for RCA in the 70s! Titles include "Honky Tonky Blues", "Women Do Know How To Carry On", "We Made It As Lovers", "Gonna Write A Letter", "Shine", and a remake of "Just To Satisfy You". On Waylon & Company, the "company" is as key as Waylon Jennings himself – as the set features the country music legend serving up a set of duets with a surprisingly great range of other singers – an all-star lineup that includes Jerry Reed, Tony Joe White, Hank Williams Jr, Willie Nelson, and Emmylou Harris! The set's a great reminder of the collaborative spirit that Jennings really started bringing to his music in the 70s – similar to Willie Nelson, a frequent recording partner – as a way of never letting superstardom make Waylon too prideful to not share the spotlight with someone else. Titles include "Hold On I'm Comin", "Spanish Johnny", "I'll Find It Where I Can", "Sight For Sore Eyes", "The Conversation", "So You Want To Be A Cowboy Singer", and "Leave Them Boys Alone". CD

Ben E KingDon't Play That Song (mono version) ... LP
Atco, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
A stellar record from Ben E King – and one of a few early 60s gems that really have him leaving a longstanding mark on soul music! There's a balance here that's unbelievable – a quality that's emotive right from the start, yet also perfectly put together too – with Ben's tremendous vocals backed by some tight Atlantic backings – in a style that's virtually the blueprint for lots more uptown soul singers to come in the 60s. The song choice is impeccable too – numbers from Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman, and Phil Spector which perfectly straddle the lines of soul music at the time – tunes that include classics like "Here Comes The Night", "Don't Play That Song", "Young Boy Blues", and "Stand By Me" – plus lesser-known gems like "Brace Yourself", "I Promise Love", "Yes", "First Taste Of Love", and "Show Me The Way". Casablanca, 1979. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A near-lost Philly disco album – recorded at Sigma Sound, but released on Casablanca at the end of the 70s, and nearly buried under the weight of the label's collapse at the time! There's a style here that borrows bits from some of Casablanca's more mainstream artists – focusing strongly on the hooks of the tunes, and putting the female vocals upfront – but still swirling around in some mighty club arrangements from the Sigma team. Loose Change themselves are a trio in the Philly mode of First Choice or Three Degrees – and titles include "Rising Cost Of Love", "Straight From The Heart", "Darling, That's Me", "Babe", and "I Wanna Hold On To You". Silver Convention took the Philly female style of disco – popularized by First Choice, Three Degrees, and others – and pumped it up with the Munich sound of throbbing bass and repetitive beats, one of the first steps towards house music in the 80s. The set features 16 of the group's biggest tracks – as well as a few solo tunes by Penny McLean and Linda Thompson – with titles that include "Lady Bump", "Fly Robin Fly", "Get Up & Boogie (12" version)", "Save Me", "Always Another Girl", "No No Joe", "I Like It", "Mission To Venus", "You've Got What It Takes", and "I'm Not A Slot Machine". Roulette, 1977. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A great album of jazzy club tracks – put together by John Usry Jr, who'd done some work with other 70s club acts like Three Degrees, Love Committee, and First Choice. Most of the tracks on the record feature female backing vocals – in the style of work by those other groups – but the real standout aspect is a jazzy harp, played in a manner that makes us think of Dorothy Ashby going disco. The best cut on the album is the 8 minute "Nightfall", which has some great trumpet work by Guido Basso – and other nice moments include the mellow "Touching", and the cuts "I Got Your Love" and "Love Me", which both have some nice guitar. Recorded in Canada, and very typical of that baroque Canadian approach to disco. LP, Vinyl record album

SunWanna Make Love/Sun Power/Sunburn ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1976/1977/1978. New Copy 2 CDs ... $8.99 19.99
A trio of records from Sun – an excellent funk ensemble from the end of the 70s! First up is Wanna Make Love – one of the greatest records ever cut by Sun – a group whose records never made the charts as strongly as their contemporaries, but not for lack of quality! This set's a great batch of heavy ensemble funk with an edge that's not always heard on other Sun records – lots of razor-sharp guitars riffing away in saw-cut modes, striking hard at the grooves of the record, and chilling out nicely for the mellower cuts. The blend is wonderful – totally tight, and totally top-shelf all the way through – yet never in a commercial way at all. Titles include "Wanna Make Love", "My Woman", "Live On Dream On", "The Show Is Over", "Love Is Never Sure", and "They're Calling For Me". Sun Power is a solid smoker from Sun – the kind of tight funk set that made the group one of the greatest soul acts on Capitol Records during the late 70s! There's a wicked Ohio vibe going on throughout – everything focused together, and right on the money – even despite the large size of the ensemble – and touched with a slightly jazzy undercurrent that carries strong echoes of Earth Wind & Fire! Rhythms are nice and tight, with keyboards, guitar, and brassy horns over the top – and on the mellower cuts the vocals have a nicely compressed quality. Titles include "Conscience", "We're So Hot", "Organ Grinder", "She Lives Alone", "Time Is Passing", and "Light Me Up". Last up is Sunburn – a tightly crafted batch of dancefloor funk that reminds us of some of our favorite work from Fantasy Records at the time – especially some of the more righteous groups that blended equal parts jazz and soul! Sun's got a tightness here that's amazing – right up there with Earth Wind & Fire at their best, but not as commercial overall – and instead, always delivered with a nice sense of righteous energy! The set kicks off with the wicked "Sun Is Here", a guitar-driven groover with a very famous sample riff – and a sound that's somehow more stripped-down and jazz funk-driven than a lot of the group's other tunes. Other cuts are pretty great too, with lots of warm bubbly soulful moments – and titles include "Dance", "Long Drawn Out Thang", "I Had A Choice", "Sun Of A Gun", and "You're The One". CD

Helen Sung & Marquis HillEverybody's Waltz ... LP
JMI, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 29.99
A really striking set of duets – one that opens up a whole new chapter in the career of pianist Helen Sung – and which maybe also offers one of the first instances we've seen of just a piano and trumpet coming together for a record! We love the music of Marquis Hill, and the sharp phrasing of the trumpeter is a perfect choice to match Helen's work here on the piano (and a bit of Fender Rhodes) – as the pair move beautifully through a set that features mostly original compositions by Sung. There's a loose feel to the tunes, but things are never too free either – and both players really feel as if they have been working together in this mode for a long time – as you'll hear on titles that include "Measure", "The Window", "Awakening", "Everybody's Waltz", "Perpetual", and "Playtime". Deep Jamaican sounds from the 70s – all work produced by the legendary Sonia Pottinger, and which shows that her talents for roots music were every bit as great as her work with earlier styles too! With Pottinger, the key is almost less what she does in the studio than what she does with her ear – as her ability to identify key talent at the right moment is something that really graces most of her recordings – definitely the case here, in an overstuffed 2CD set that features rare singles from the High Note label, most appearing on CD for the first time ever, 8 of which are previously unissued! Demon (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $44.99 49.99
There's few folks who know the British mod scene better than Eddie Piller – as the DJ and head of Acid Jazz records has done plenty in recent decades to both give exposure to older British groups who never got their due, and also help some contemporary mod combos get the exposure they deserve! Yet here, Eddie's going way back to the roots – to present a set of tracks that really gets at the full scope of musical genius that exploded on the British scene in the mid 60s – not music that us Americans were digging in the Brit Invasion, but grittier groups who were drawing heavily from soul, jazz, and R&B – and really setting the scene for all the musical changes that were beginning to take place in England. At some level, this might be the first moment where British groups really started to diverge from American rockers – something you can definitely hear in the way the rhythms, vocals, and instrumentation come together – superbly directed through Piller's great choice of material. 4CD set features a massive 100 tracks in all – with work from Sharon Tandy, The Eyes, Carnaby, The Creation, Birds, Fleur De Lys, Syndicats, Wynder K Frog, Bluesology, Love Affair, PP Arnold, Apostolic Intervention, Alan Bown Set, The Quik, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Georgie Fame, Small Faces, High Numbers, Artwoods, Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band, Richard Kent Style, Dusty Springfield, The Organisers, Tony & Tandy, and Jimmy James & The Vagabonds. Motown/MoWest/Light In The Attic, Early 70s. New Copy ... $4.99 15.98
The first ever compilation of the best music made for MoWest – the eclectic, but still soulful cuts made when Berry Gordy Jr. relocated from Motown to the west coast in the early 70s – releasing cool and sometimes strange music with a soul background, yet toasted by LA sunshine! The MoWest subsidiary lasted just a few years, and gets overlooked in the canonization of Motown at it's most classic and revolutionary – but the legacy is pretty incredible. Funk, sunshine rock and soul fused adventurously by a stunningly diverse roster – late period Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons (who's comp-opening track is a slept on sunshine pop-soul classic), breezy-jazzy-soul from Odyssey, the sister funk of Sisters Love, a stunning solo left turn from Spinners singer GC Cameron and more great stuff from Syreeta, The Commodores, Suzee Ikeda, Thelma Houston and others. We've been dying for a well selected MoWest comp like this for years, and Light In The Attic stepped to the plate and knock it right out of the park. The songs choices are great, the notes are great. . .everything about it is a win. Essential! Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
The Vietnam war was tough on most folks in the US – but it's no secret that it was especially tough on black Americans – who were often given little choice and little chance to get out of the callup to the military action – which left a huge impression on their community for years to come! This package documents the affect of Vietnam in soul music – in ways that are both direct and more subtle, as the package blends together a number of tracks that you likely don't know at all, and others that you might have missed as being critical of the war – as there's more subtle messaging going on, a lesson that was learned during the Civil Rights era, when a mellower lyric might get more mainstream circulation – as a call to action that a change was going to come. The quality of cuts here is wonderful – as well-selected as some of the Ace/Kent collections of rare soul music on small labels – and there's definitely a few here that we're hearing for the first time, alongside other numbers that really sound great in the setting. Titles include "Fighting For My Baby" by Donald Jenkins, "Lonely Soldier" by William Bell, "Letter To A Buddie" by Joe Medwick, "I Want To Come Home For Christmas" by Marvin Gaye, "My Ship Is Coming In Tomorrow" by The Pace Setters, "Johnny" by King Hannibal, "Going On Strike" by The Emotions, "Uncle Sam" by Jimmy Hughes, "My Soldier Boy Is Coming Home" by The Shirelles, "Glad To Be Home" by Charles Smith & Jeff Cooper, "The War Is Over My Brother" by The Sensational Saints, "Home To Stay" by RB Greaves, "Stop The War" by The Impressions, "Wish You Were Here With Me" by The Fawns, "VC Blues" by Allen Orange, "Promise That You'll Wait" by Michael Lizzmore, "Men Are Getting Scarce" by Chairmen Of The Board, and "Leave Him Alone" by Stu Gardner. As tired as you might be of hearing about the towering genius of Saint Dylan (well earned as the kudos may be), it's pretty wonderful to hear what an adventurous ear he has for quality music regardless of genre, and the set is a heck of a lot of fun, too – how else to describe a compilation that features both late 40s kitsch from the Sherman Williams Orchestra – and fiery modern garage rock from The Dirtbombs? 50 songs on 2CDs: "Hello" by The Sherman Williams Orchestra, "Let's Have A Party" by Wanda Jackson, "Sam Stone" by Swamp Dogg, "Jump Into The Fire" by Nilsson, "Fist City" by Loretta Lynn, "One Hand Loose" by Charlie Feathers, "First I Look At The Purse" by The Contours, "Rhode Island Is Famous For You" by Blossom Dearie, "The Glory Of Love" by The Velvetone, "Young Man's Blues" by Mose Allison, "Rocket Nine Takes Off For Planet Venus" by Sun Ra, "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (And Loud Loud Music)" by Joe Maphis & Rose Lee and much more. Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $39.99 46.99
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. CD

Low-burning tenor from Jerry Bergonzi – a player we grow to appreciate more and more as the years go by! Jerry starts this set off with a great reading of Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge" – which is a very apt choice, as Bergonzi's tenor has all the deep soul and modern edges we loved in Henderson's early Blue Note work – a real breath of fresh air when Jerry first came on the scene, and still holding up beautifully over the years! Mulgrew Miller's piano provides some great support here, too – supporting Bergonzi's vibe beautifully with lots of dark, thoughtful lines – even on the ballad numbers – and the rest of the group features Adam Nussbaum on drums and Dave Santoro on bass. Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from this fantastic group – plus bonus tracks too! First up is Hit After Hit – a tremendous album that has The Chosen Few stepping out to match some of the best American harmony soul groups of the early 70s – vocals you might hear from The Moments or Delfonics, but tuned towards rhythms that are much more Kingston than New Jersey or Philly! Yet there's also a few funky moments too – a rare element that really shows how the group could change things up from some of their Jamaican contemporaries, on titles that include a version of the "Shaft" theme, plus "You're A Big Girl Now", "Everybody Plays The Fool", "Melting Pot", "Ebony Eyes", "Do Your Thing", "People Make The World Go Round", and "I'm Sorry". Everybody Plays The Fool is a record that's as much an early 70s reggae set as it is a strong bit of east coast soul – Kingston rhythms mixed with fantastic harmonies that maybe echo more of the East Coast group soul modes than some of the earlier Jamaican groups of the 60s! The choice of material also echoes that quality too – as The Chosen Few take on older soul classics, remade for a reggae market – mixed with a few original tracks of their own. Titles include "My Thing", "Reggae Stuff", "I Second That Emotion", "Make Way For The Young Folks", "La La At The End", and "Tears Of A Clown". Chosen Few In Miami is legendary soul from The Chosen Few – a group who were as much a 70s soul outfit as they were a reggae group! This album's the group's greatest – recorded in Miami with classic TK funky production from King Sporty, who also seems to be backing them up on most of the set. There's certainly a reggae feel to the album at times, but the group's harmonies are much more in an American soul vein – and Sporty's super-dope backings use plenty of wah-wah guitar, electric keys, and that burning, bubbling Miami soul groove that made so many of the TK albums from the time so great! Titles include the stone funky classic "Funky Buttercup", plus "Wandering", "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up", "Why Can't We Live", "Drift Away", "I Am A Man", and "Hit Me With Music". 2CD set also features 11 more bonus tracks – including related work by Lloyd Charmers Selection! Ms Hill's notorious double album follow up to the Miseducation Of. . . album – a pretty nice set of unvarnished, intimate performances that would have gone done a lot smoother in an earlier era! After the whirlwind success of her first solo album, Lauryn, either a) decided that the peak of the mainstream glittering pop palace is better left to people like Gwen Stefani, or b) went off the deep end into a world of inflated self-righteousness and Bono-esque ego, depending on who's sizing her work up. Who cares. The bottom line is that Unplugged 2.0 is really a pretty decent left turn that wouldn't have been such a puzzling choice back in the 70s era, when major label artists might put out 4 albums a year, and took chances here and there. As the entire output of such a revered artist for the entire half of a decade, it's a disappointment, but a perfectly listenable one. 22 tracks on 2CDs (including interludes): "Mr. Intentional", "Adam Lives In Theory", "I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)", "Just Like Water", "Mystery Of Iniquity", "I Remember", "So Much Things To Say", "The Conquering Lion" and more. A pair of overlooked female soul gems – back to back on a single CD! The first album is It Must Be Love – sweet late 70s modern soul from Alton McClain & Destiny – a great little female vocal trio with a sound that ranges from lightly funky with jazzy flourishes, to soaringly soulful! The group kind of follow in a tradition started by Honeycone and First Choice, and improved upon by The Emotions – and like that latter group, the girls move from the easier disco tracks that you'd normally expect, into a range of soulful styles that all come off equally well with their vocal technique. Webster Lewis handled some of the nice string arrangements – and players include Wah Wah Watson on guitar and Lee Ritenour on keys. titles include "Crazy Love", "Sweet Temptation", "Taking My Love For Granted", "My Empty Room", "Push & Pull", and "The Power Of Love". More Of You is one of the best records by this great little modern soul trio who should have gone onto bigger and better things. The session's got a strong mellow groove, typical of some of the non-hit soul coming out of labels like Polydor and Capitol at the end of the 70s – and tracks include "Stares & Whispers", "Love Waves", "More Of You", "99 1/2", "You Bring Me To My Morning Light", and "Thank Heaven For You". One of the first albums to really show Blue Mitchell's genius as a leader – recorded past the more formulaic bop modes of some of his other Riverside sessions, and handled with a lyrical edge that really gets at the best aspects of his playing. Of course, part of the reason for this is that Blue's in the company of some of his Horace Silver bandmates – including drummer Roy Brooks, tenorist Junior Cook, and bassist Gene Taylor – but even more than that, the presence of a young Cedar Walton on piano really makes the set sparkle, as does the choice of some extremely strong material – such as "The Cup Bearers" and "Capers", both written by that young and glowing jazz compositional lumiary, Tom McIntosh, and the tunes "Turquoise, written by Walton, and "Dingbat Blues", written by Charles Davis. Bassist Miroslav Vitous was a key member of the legendary combo Weather Report, so he's obviously a great choice to head a record like this – but the sound of the album's quite different than any easy fusion expectations you might have, put together in ways that definitely showcase the ECM setting of the session! Vitous' basslines are more complicated than ever – those rich, rumbling tones we first came to love many years back – and they're joined here with a core quartet that includes Franco Ambrosetti on trumpet, Gary Campbell on tenor, and Gerald Cleaver on bass – all players with an atmospheric sensibility that matches Miroslav's modes on the record. The lack of any keyboards really makes the album differ from any familiar Weather Report grooves – as does the presence of Michel Portal on guest bass clarinet – so you might do best thinking of the record as more of a "poem" to Weather Report than a straight homage – but a great poem that's filled with all the richest sounds Vitous has to offer. Titles include "Whip It" by The New Establishment In Soul, "Let's Do It Today (full version)" by The Us, "Pushin To The Top" by Markus Kelly & The Impassions, "Sissy Walk" by Billy Ball & The Upsetters, "Tell Her" by Fred Williams & The Jewels Band, "The Hatch" by The TMGs, "Boots Groove" by The Soul Tornados, "Po Boy's Dream" by Illinois Connection, "It's Not You For Me (live)" by Billy Joe Holloman, "Funky In Here" by Dayton Sidewinders, "Master Groove" by Henry Peters & The Imperials, and "A Day In The Life" by Chocolate Snow. Cameo/Ace, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of vocal group material from the Philly powerhouse Cameo/Parkway – home to some of the best soul and rock work coming out of the city in the early and mid 60s! The set does a wonderful job of bringing forth the best work from both styles – mixing things up in the genre-blind way that you'd often get in radio at the time – going first for great harmonies, and caring less about the exact nature of the group involved. A few cuts here are hits, but there's lots more obscure singles from the label – which makes the package one of the most collectors-oriented that we've ever seen from Collector's Choice – almost at an Ace-styled sort of approach. Titles include "There Goes The Boy" by The Lydells, "The Mountains" by The Sequins, "Everyone But You" by The Skyliners, "Triangle" by The Rays, "Tears In My Heart" by The Impacs, "Remember Me Baby" by Billy & The Essentials, "Down By The Ocean" by The Exceptions, "To Cry" by The Expressions, "Flame Of Love" by Rick & The Masters, "When You Dance" by The Turbans, "Did You Ever Get My Letter" by The Tymes, and "Sandra Baby" by The Gleems. Funky classics – remade! This set may well be the best in Ubiquity's excellent Rewind series – a compilation collection that focuses on new versions of older funky tunes – some of which are pulled from obscure recent singles and import recordings, others of which appear on this great set for the first time! The quality of work is excellent – not only in the choice of original tunes to cover, which is already great, but in the way the artists handle them – taking them to whole new places, and using the core elements of the tracks to build tunes that have a completely different feel! Titles include Chakachas' "Jungle Fever" redone by Louie Vega, Cymande's "Genevieve" redone by Greyboy, Willie Colon's "Che Che Cole" redone by Antibalas in a "makossa mix", Betty Carter's "Open Your Eyes" redone by Elsa, Gil Scott-Heron's "Willing" redone by Damon Aaron, Herbie Hancock's "Rough" redone by John Arnold, Lorez Alexandria's take on "Baltimore Oriole" redone by P'Taah, Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Riot In Lagos" redone by Swag, The Monkee's "Porpoise Song" redone by Nobody, AC/DC's "All Night Long" redone by Bing Ji Ling, and Sahib Shihab's "Please Don't Leave" redone by Paoplo Fereghini. Dragon (Sweden), 1960. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
The complete recordings of a legendary live cycle of shows in Stockholm from 1960 – material that was previously issued on two different 2LP sets during the album era, now brought together here with bonus tracks too! The first third of the set features incredible work from the team of Miles Davis and John Coltrane – working together in space that's very open, and far more exploratory than their studio work of the late 50s – maybe at a level that really shows the impact that Coltrane's growth was having on the solo approach of Davis! The key rhythm trio keeps things swinging – Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – which almost seems to allow the horn players even more freedom. The second two thirds of the set are equally striking, but in a very different way – as they feature the great Sonny Stitt, blowing both alto and tenor with Miles' group – a choice that's maybe a bit surprising, but equally wonderful too – a Stitt brings the sound maybe back to a bop core, but also seems to really get a chance to show off some of those modern currents that he had to soft-pedal on his albums for Roost. Titles with Coltrane include "So What", "On Green Dolphin Street", "All Blues/Theme", "Walkin/Theme", and "Fran Dance" – and titles with Stitt include "Autumn Leaves/Theme", "Walkin", "All Of You", "June Night", "Stardust", "Lover Man", "If I Were A Bell", "No Blues/Theme", "Softly As In A Mornin Sunrise", and "So What". George Duke at the end of the century – still going strong with the wonderful mix of jazz, funk, and soul that he pioneered in the 70s – a style that really grows and shifts in mighty nice way over the course of the material in the set! Duke moved from Epic to Elektra and Warner during the time of these tracks – and while some of the material has George picking up more 80s-styled keyboard elements and rhythms, the set also progresses towards other material that's maybe even more back to basics in a jazz sort of way – first electric, then more acoustic – but with some nice variations that show that Duke, one of the real pioneers, was still doing a lot more with soulful jazz than most of his contemporaries! You'll definitely find a few vocal cuts here – George always had a great ear for a singer – and throughout, the man's skills on the keyboard continue to be strong – especially tilted towards that nice sense of space that Duke picked up after his jamming years in the mid 70s. As with other titles on the Soulmusic label, the choice of cuts is great – really focusing on the kind of special album tracks that show a deeper side of the artist than the singles – with a total of 45 tracks that include "Mystery Eyes", "Say Hello", "The Touch", "From Dusk To Dawn", "It's Our World", "So I'll Pretend", "Montreux Nights", "Love Can Be So Cold", "No Rhyme No Reason", "6 O'Clock", "Fame", "560 SL", "Rise Up", "Guilty", "I Surrender", "Thief In The Night", "The Times We've Known", "All About You", "If You Will", "She's Amazing", "Thinin About You", "Fill The Need", and "Never Be Another". Instrumentation is usually somewhat spare, but the album's got a fuller sound and richer feel than some of his other recent sets – that eternal glow that Peven hits when he's definitely operating at his best. Brilliant harmony vocals by the Four Freshman – 2 albums recorded a decade apart, and both of them great! First up is the classic Voices In Modern – an album with a title that perfectly sums up the Four Freshman contribution to 50s jazz, and their sublime way of re-casting vocals in their work! Most of the numbers on the set are familiar ones, but they're redone by the group with a brilliant sense of interplay that really transforms them – a style that's not nearly as complicated as some of their later work with Pete Rugolo, but which is somehow even more compelling, as it features the group arranging their own vocals, and playing the instruments that back them up! Titles include "Holiday", "Street Of Dreams", "It's A Blue World", "It Happened Once Before", "After You", "My Heart Stood Still", and "Circus". Next up are 11 more tracks from Funny How Time Slips Away – a jaunty 1964 session that has the Freshmen moving into territory they'd explore more deeply on their work for Liberty Records – expanding into a range of new styles for the 60s, and working here with some nicely groovy arrangements from Jimmie Haskell and Shorty Rogers! There's some nice use of electric bass and guitar on a few tracks – giving them a bit more of a romp than usual – and a few others feature some nicely-recorded tinkling piano that trips alongside the vocals with a breezy 60s edge, including a few with country western tinges. Titles include "Don't Make Me Sorry", "My Baby's Gone", "Charade", "Wake The Town & Tell The People", "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hold Me", "We've Got A World That Swings", and "Tears In Our Eyes". Yet even in that mode, the album's never too commercial, and certainly not pop-oriented at all – just proof that Stax was growing wonderfully at the time, and had plenty to offer a great talent like Mavis. Titles include a funky version of "Son Of A Preacher Man", plus "Pick Up The Pieces", "You're Driving Me", "Security", "Until I Met You", "Sweet Things You Do", "Good To Me", and "Chained". On Only The Lonely, Mavis Staples hits a newly sophisticated groove that's set up in full arrangements from the great Horace Ott, and produced with a nicely sweet touch from Don Davis! The sound is a great example of the changes going on at the new Stax at the end of the 60s – a more mature, adult sort of sound that goes way beyond simple soul – especially the too-sweet style that sometimes dominated female acts during the Stax/Atlantic years. Ott's backings have never sounded better, and at points Mavis almost brings an Aretha-like depth to her vocals – or even better, hits a range that really ranks right up there with some of the best indie female southern soul acts of her generation. Titles include "Don't Change Me Now", "It Makes Me Wanna Cry", "I Have Learned To Do Without You", "You're The Fool", "What Happened To The Real Me", and "How Many Times". CD also features the bonus track "That's The Way Love Is" – a duet with Johnnie Taylor. CD

Elektra/Collectors Choice, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic first solo album from Tom Verlaine – a set recorded shortly after the breakup of Television, but with a vibe that almost makes it feel like the group's third album! The songs are maybe a bit tighter, but no less creative – both from a lyrical and sonic perspective – and Verlaine's got that fantastic sense of edge in his vocals, which can even make some of the nicer lyrics feel a bit nasty – but all at a level that's never overstated, and which should be a blueprint for later generations of singers who always try too hard. Titles include "The Grip Of Love", "Kingdom Come", "Mr Bingo", "Yonki Time", "Red Leaves", and "Last Night". CD

✨✧ Dionne WarwickHere Where There Is Love ... CD
Scepter/Collectors Choice, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dionne Warwick's missing from the cover of this album, but the record still managed to be one of her biggest of the 60s – thanks to a near-classic selection of tunes, and sublime arrangements from the mighty Burt Bacharach! There's a confident, mature approach to the record that's arguably even better than Warwick's first few albums for Scepter – a kind of gelling of the genius she'd discovered with Bacharach & David – cast out over even more adult themes than before, with less of a need to focus on pop-oriented material. The album includes two of Dionne's most compelling cuts ever – "Alfie" and "Trains & Boats & Panes" – both sadder than the usual numbers, and with a good dose of remorseful soul – and other Bacharach numbers include "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Go With Love", "Here Where There Is Love", and the seminal "What The World Needs Now Is Love". The album also features some non-Bacharach/David songs too – and Dionne does an equally great job with these as well. CD

WEA (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best compilations of 70s soul you'll ever buy – a treasure trove of tracks from mid 70s Atlantic and Warner Brothers Records – all recorded in the mighty soul capitol of Philly! The set does a great job of combining hit singles with a load of lesser-known Philly gems – tunes recorded as singles or obscure album tracks by artists who were working in the same Sigma scene as the bigger acts on Atlantic, but who never managed to crack the charts as much. The whole thing's great – a smooth-grooving midtempo batch of tracks that never fails to please – and honestly, if we had to dig through thousands of old records to produce such a set, we're not sure we could do a better job! Titles include "One More Time" by Dianne Steinberg, "Let's Get Together Now" by The Aristocrats, "Love Won't Let Me Wait" and "Loving You Is Mellow" by Major Harris, "Kiss My Love Goodbye" by Bettye Swann, "Welcome To The Club" by Blue Magic, "That's Where I'm Coming From" by True Reflection, "Save Your Love For Me" by Vivian Reed, "You Call Me Back" by Clyde Brown, ""I Got A Feeling" by First Choice, "Gonna Make You Mine" by Anglo Saxon Brown, "Got To Get You Together Now" by Sons Of Robin Stone, "Can We Come Together" by The Trammps, and "Once You Hit The Road" by Dionne Warwick. Demon (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
2LP set features a whopping 34 tracks in all – with work from Sharon Tandy, The Eyes, Carnaby, The Creation, Birds, Fleur De Lys, Syndicats, Wynder K Frog, Bluesology, Love Affair, PP Arnold, Apostolic Intervention, Alan Bown Set, The Quik, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Georgie Fame, Small Faces, High Numbers, Artwoods, Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band, Richard Kent Style, Dusty Springfield, The Organisers, Tony & Tandy, and Jimmy James & The Vagabonds. A much-needed look at this sometimes-missed chapter in Italian music – a moment when the Italo Club sound of the 80s had transformed into a scene that gave us some of the cleanest, leanest house music of the time! Earlier Italian imports had a big impact on the birth of house music in Chicago – and a few years later, those forward-thinking sounds were used to bring a needed revamp to Italian club as well – as you'll hear in these wonderfully-executed cuts that often have the best spare sounds of the US underground, mixed with some classic elements that warm things up in a mighty nice way! Barry GuyIrvin's Comet ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 2021. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
Solo bass from the great Barry Guy – titled after the painting Comet, by Albert Irving – an image which graces the cover of the record – but served up here in a style of sound that's completely Barry's own! The music has that mindblowing quality that Guy can hit when he's really at his best – that way of opening up the instrument to new sonic possibilities that first made him such an exciting improviser at the start of his career, and which is still best heard in a solo setting like this – one that shows that Barry has lost none of his fire, nor is ever willing to just hang around in territory that's too familiar from earlier periods in his career. The painting in the title is apt – as at times, Guy has a very painterly style in sound – really making all the right choices all feel so right – on titles that include "Comet", "Oscillating", "Old Earth Home", "Barehead", and "Closed Space". ✨✧ Narada Michael WaldenLooking At Me Looking At You/Nature Of Things/Divine Emotion ... CD
Atlantic/BGO (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of mid 80s albums from Narada Michael Walden – all together in one 2CD set! First up is Looking At You Looking At Me – an album with plenty of beats– so much so you might forget that Narada Michael Walden first rose to fame as a drummer – but all the electricity is fine with us, given the 80s groove sound of the set! There's a nice sense of energy that informs most of the tracks – a somewhat funky undercurrent that almost shows traces of the Minneapolis influence on soul at the time, but without a too-Prince sort of sound overall. There's also a few key ballads too – some gentler cuts that round out the set nicely, and which showcase the increasing confidence Walden's had with his vocals over the years. Titles include "Reach Out", "Looking At You Looking At Me", "Burning Up", "Shake It Off", "Dream Maker", and "Tina". Nature Of Things is a highly electric set from Narada Michael Walden – a mid 80s effort that's filled with catchy little tunes! The style's certainly more mainstream than we might have guessed, given Walden's early career – but it's still much better than most of the pop of its generation – thanks to Michael's strong jazz pedigree, which does seem to inform some of his arrangements and instrumental choices on the album. Most of the percussion is in the form of beats, but Walden's also credited with playing drums (roto-toms, perhaps?) – and in addition to his own lead vocals, the set also features work by Patti Austin and Marth Wash. Titles include "Live It Up", "Nature Of Things", "High Above The Clouds", "Gimme Gimme Gimme", "Suspicion", and "Dancin On Main Street". Divine Emotion is sweet 80s soul from Narada Michael Walden – a set that has the singer/drummer very confidently in the tight R&B territory that served him so well during the decade! As with previous records, there's a fair bit of 80s electronic elements in the mix – bursting, bubbling, and exploding with a joyful groove that really fits Walden's spirit – and serves to emphasize his ever-growing talent for penning at catchy tune! Titles include "Wild Thing", "Explosion", "Jam The Night", "Divine Emotions", "Can't Get You Outta My Head", "That's The Way I Feel About Cha", and "Certain Kind Of Lover". CD

Subject matter is often very down to earth, but handled with a sense of majesty that really elevates every day life – in the best tradition of classic soul. ✨✧ Larry DixonStar Time – Larry Dixon & Lad Productions Inc – Chicago 1971 to 1987 ... CD
Past Due, 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two rare albums from Chicago soul singer Larry Dixon – plus an even more obscure array of rare singles and lost tapes from the same time too! The set begins with Larry's wonderful indie set I Am So In Love – originally issued on vinyl with a glued-on photocopy on the cover image! The album's a self-produced effort from Chicago soul singer Larry Dixon – and a great mix of sweeter soul and a few clubbier numbers – all of which sound surprisingly great, given the homemade look of the package! According to the label, the album was recorded live – most likely live in the studio, but with a freewheeling freshness that gets away from some of the cliches of this time – and which is really in keeping with the honest, personal approach Larry brings to the record. Titles include "What I Am", "Body", "Show Me", "Star Time", "Free Me", "Hey Girl", and "I'm So In Love". Next up is 1984's Can't Price Love – done with a bit more of an 80s soul vibe, but still villed with wonderfully sweet vocals from Larry! Dixon co-wrote some of the tunes and his guitarist Charles Parks takes credit for some of the others – and titles include one gospel song "Wait For Me" (both vocal and instrumental) , "Can't Price Love" (also vocal and instrumental version), "Doing What Comes Naturally", "Dance To The Beat", and "Make Up Your Mind". The second half of the collection is maybe even cooler than the first – a huge array of rare tracks done by Larry Dixon, from the early 70s through the mid 80s – really showing the evolution of both the indie soul sound of the time, and of the sort of artists who never fully got their time in the spotlight! Some tracks are by Dixon, others feature a different singer in the lead – and together, the work really illustrates the choices made by indie singers who were usually working a few years behind mainstream trends, but with a sharpness that really belies their lesser-star status. The music is already great on the rare funk or harmony singles at the start – but gets even more interesting as Larry and musicians cook up a sweet jazzy take on club – one that's almost more cosmic funk at times, with kind of a Cali-Tex vibe, than any sort of the disco on the east coast – especially given the placement of really strong musicians in the group. These 20 tracks are a huge revelation – and titles include "Next Time", "The Only One", "Don't It Make You Dance", "Love In Your Heart", "Feelings So Fine", and "Being With You" by Larry Dixon; "Space Caravan", "Groove It All Night", and "Love We Had (demo)" by Charles Parks III & The High Society Players; and "Ready For Your Touch", "That Kind Of Love", and "Ready For Your Touch (Jerome's dub)" by Chuck-A-Luck. Tenorist Jack Sels may not be one of the best-known names on the European jazz scene of the postwar years – but that's likely because he passed away earlier than most, but not before leaving a strong legacy of jazz on the Belgian scene! Sels is a hell of a player – modern in conception, but possessed with a wonderfully soulful tone – one that goes deeper than some of the other European modernists of the period, and which has as much of a sense of Jack's person in the music as it does his overall vision for the sound. This package might be the first that most of us on this side of the Atlantic have experienced his work – and it's a wonderfully-done set that lives up to the quality of the other Belgian funk and jazz sets on this excellent label – with great song choices and very detailed notes. Sels plays with some of his own groups, but also with Lucky Thompson on tenor, Philip Catherine on guitar and Lou Bennett on organ, and also as part of the Saxorama group. One of the greatest soundtracks ever from the legendary Ennio Morricone – a real standard-setting record that's one of the top choices we go to again and again to illustrate the genius of his music! The score is a fantastic mix of the two best sides of Morricone's work – the kind of light, lilting melodies that are schooled in bossa, but turned loose on their own devices – and the darker, more atonal passages that would come to play more strongly during the 70s. The light wins over the darkness in most of the record – especially the tracks that feature the sublime wordless vocals of Edda Dell'Orso, which swell and fall with the movement of the strings and keyboards. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "Le Foto Proibite", "Nel Vuoto", "Intermezzino Pop", "Amor Come Dolore", and "Quelle Foto". Tortured souls and troubled hearts – served up here in a dark set of narratives from the classic years of country music! As with previous volumes in this excellent series, the package goes way beyond the big hits, to turn up lots of great songs from the shadowy corners of country – songs about bad deeds and poor choices – handled by a variety of different singers who really keep things interesting! There's way more love of the music here than the sense of kitsch you might expect from the cover – and although you might first find the songs appealing from a gimmicky perspective, we can bet that you'll be getting the message before long.
