Earth Wind & FireAll 'N All (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1977. New Copy ... $6.99 7.99
Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's record collection from the time, it's still got a freshness that we always forget about – and lots of nice twists and turns that show that the band hadn't lost their more sophisticated roots. Case in point is the wonderful "Brazilian Rhyme", a short little groover that you'll instantly recognize as a sample from the first Tribe Called Quest album. Other tracks include "Jupiter", "In The Marketplace", "Magic Mind", "Runnin", "Be Ever Wonderful", and "Serpentine Fire". Plus, the CD features bonus tracks "Would You Mind?", "Runnin (original Hollywood mix)", and "Brazilian Rhyme (live)". CD

Earth Wind & FireEarth Wind & Fire/Need Of Love ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". CD

Earth Wind & FireGratitude ... CD
Columbia, 1975. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
Great stuff! Although a live album, Gratitude is one of Earth Wind & Fire's greatest from the mid 70s – a very tight batch of grooves that proves that Maurice White & Co. could play just as well on stage as they could in the studio – and the noise of the crowd going wild is enough to confirm that! And although a live set, the record's actually a bit half and half – with a few added studio tunes to keep the hits coming. Includes their classic version of Skip Scarborough's "Can't Hide Love", plus the mellow jams "Yearnin' Learnin'" and "Reasons", the funky "Shining Star", and a great cover of "Sun Goddess", which was also done by Ramsey Lewis with the group. Features a bonus live medley too – not on the original album! CD

Sanctuary, 2005. Used 2CD & DVD ... Just Sold Out!
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated People" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! 13 tracks in all. Includes a second CD with 3 tracks and a DVD live at Red Rocks. CD

Columbia, 1976. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
A big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Of course, with Charles Stepney helping out on production, it's hard to miss – and he's one of the few cats who could handle a blend like this so well. The compression in the band's playing is impeccable – with just the right mix of spacey spiritualism, sophisticated jazzy playing, and a straight ahead love of the soulful hook. Includes the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! CBS, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Earth Wind & Fire touch the world with this sweet batch of grooves – a set of tracks that has them firmly embracing the electric sound of 80s soul, yet still bringing in some light spiritual touches of their own! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. A few cool studio touches reference the group's earlier history – a nice reminder amidst the more contemporary sounds – and titles include "You & I", "System Of Survival", "Every Now & Then", "Money Tight", "Here Today & Gone Tomorrow", "Victim Of The Modern Heart", and "Thinking Of You". The electric bass is key here, and often sets up a groove that holds things fast, even in the more freely improvised moments – and even when the trio is joined by Goran Kajfes on trumpet, and Mats Aleklint on trombone, the sound is still quite tight overall – but still mixed with the bolder expressions you'd expect from the players involved! Colemine, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 13.98
Sure Fire Soul Ensemble are tighter than ever, and have really perfected a trademark sound – a style that's got the breaking drums of a vintage funky 45, the moody horns of an Ethio funk group, and the kind of organ and keyboard lines that would be right at home on a vintage album by The Meters! The blend is wonderful, and carried off to perfection here – touched with some added percussion and other surprises over the course of the record – but all with this lean, sharp instrumental style that never needs any vocals, nor any other added elements to hold our interest! The set begins with a cover of the Roy Ayers tune "Aragon" – then moves through originals that include "Build Bridges", "Roxy Funk", "Gloria's Anthem", "El Nino", "Sucker Punch", "Costa Blues", and "Campus Life". Columbia, Mid 70s. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff through and through – and almost a "best of" best of collection from the 70s! The album's a key illustration of the genius of Earth Wind & Fire on Columbia Records – because by the time the set was released in 1978, most of the tracks were already well-known hits – but still had a soulful power and righteous undercurrent that few other chart acts could match. Maurice White, Charles Stepney, and the others have a perfect way of holding onto their deepest inspirations while honing their sills in the studio – and the results of that commitment are heard beautifully on tracks that include "Got To Get You Into My Life", "Shining Star", "Getaway", "Can't Hide Love", "Fantasy", "Reasons", "September", and "That's The Way Of The World". Earth Wind & Fire hits the 80s – and never misses a beat! Turns out that the group's older style of jazzy funk was a perfect fit for the boogie-styled rhythms of the post-disco era – heard here on the megahit "Let's Groove", and followed up by a beautiful batch of supporting numbers! There's styles here that other groups were starting to use at the time – keyboard flourishes and more electrified rhythms at the bottom – but throughout the whole set, Maurice White and the group handle themselves with trademark EWF class, and elevate even the simplest of tunes to a higher level. Another winner for the group, and the kind of record that most other groups could only hope to record once! A previously-unissued live set from Earth Wind & Fire – recorded during their monumental tour of the US in 1975! The choice of tracks is great – and the album's filled with loads of the group's early gems – including "Mighty Mighty", "Kalimba Story", "Yearnin Learnin", "Shining Star", "Happy Feelin", "Evil", "Reasons", and "That's The Way Of The World" – plus a version of "Sun Goddess" with guest keys from Ramsey Lewis! Rune Grammafon (Germany), 2013. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great album from Fire – a set that has the trio expanded way more than usual, into jazz orchestra form – and working here in a style that's wonderfully soulful and spiritual overall! The set isn't just a spiritual jazz outing – as it's got these really unique flavors and colors that still echo the intensity of the previous Fire trio outings, but which spread the energy out over the larger ensemble, then give it a lot more focus too – less improvisation, and instead some really visionary arrangements that make the whole thing shine brilliantly from start to finish. There's a bit of vocals, which are tremendous too – almost echoing some of the Fontella Bass work with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, but darker too. Mats Gustafsson conducts the group – and really blows us away with his efforts – and the set features one long two part composition – with performances by Sten Sandell on piano and electronics, Mariam Wallentin and Sofia Jernberg on voice, Magnus Broo and Emil Strandberg on trumpet, Jonas Kullhammar on bass sax, Fredrik Ljungkvist on baritone and clarinet, and Mats himself on tenor and live electronics! Rune Grammafon (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An expanded take on the original "Actions" composition – originally recorded by Don Cherry, with composer Krzystof Penderecki – and extended here by original material from reedman Mats Gustafsson! The original recording was a key juncture between two different avant worlds on the European scene – and this updated set is equally powerful – as it features an all-star group of younger improvisers – with Gustafsson on baritone and leading the group – in a lineup that includes Per Texas Johansson on tenor and flute, Christer Bothen on bass clarinet, Anna Hogberg on alto, Marial Berthel on trombone, Reine Fiske on guitar, Alex Zethson on Hammond organ, Torbjorn Zetterberg on electric bass, and Goran Kajfes, Niklas Barno, and Susansa Santos Silva on trumpets! The strong use of trumpets really echoes Cherry's legacy, but there's also a very different vibe to this take on Penderecki's mix of composition and improvisation – one that's maybe more careful, spacious, and thoughtful than the original - a great tribute not just to Gustafsson's legacy, but also the evolution of improvisation over the decades. An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Not Two (Poland), 2017. New Copy 6CD ... $59.99 74.99
The title here is very apt – as this fantastic quartet seem to set a different kind of fire on every one of the CDs in the set – six different performances, recorded over the space of two months – in Paris, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Poland! The group should be well-known to lovers of improvised music from earlier Okka Disk recordings in the 90s – and the passage of two decades has only made them sharper and more intense – especially when the tenor and pocket trumpet of Joe McPhee joins the lineup of Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums. The set of recordings is dedicated to James Baldwin – which you might have guessed from the title – and the whole thing is a fitting tribute to the transformation of ideas about freedom and identity over the passage of time. Clancy Eccles/The DynamitesFreedom/Fire Corner (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A pair of gems from the early years of reggae – stacked back to back in a 2CD set, along with a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the legendary Freedom album from Clancy Eccles – one of the first great talents to emerge in the Jamaican scene of the 60s – a singer whose recorded history even predates rocksteady and ska, and who had an undeniable impact on the early sound of reggae! Eccles is a genius – a singer/songwriter with a strong sense of soul, and an approach that really opened up the way for a new level of humanity in Jamaican music – as you'll hear on titles that include "Two Of A Kind", "Mount Zion", "Fattie Fattie", "What Will Your Mother Say", "Freedom", "I Need You", "The World Needs Loving", and "Dollar Train". The Dynamites were Clancy Eccles backing band at the same time as the Freedom album – and they step out here in an album of their own – one produced by Clancy himself, but issued even before they backed him up on Freedom! The set features numbers by the group, some organ tunes by Winston Wright, and two vocal appearances by King Stitt – on titles that include "John Public", "Eternally", "Sam Fie", "This Is The Night", "One Way Street", "Vigorton 2", "Fire Corner", "Soul Language", and "Say What You Say". Plus, this 2CD set has a huge amount of bonus tracks – 13 more numbers by Eccles – plus another 13 by The Dynamites, King Stitt, Val Bennett, and Winston Wright. A huge amount of music, all packaged with the usual deep notes and high quality that makes the Doctor Bird label one of the greatest reissue labels for Jamaican music! CD

An excellent bit of modern soul from Chicago – a group featuring lead vocalist Joyce Faison, who'd also done some backup work on other records at the time. Like some of the other titles on the Erect label, the groove here is a mix of mellow soul and 80s groove – and the best tracks have Joyce right out front on vocals, with nice shades of color behind her voice, supporting the tracks with a richer sound than you'd expect for a small label effort. Dan HartmanRelight My Fire ... LP
Blue Sky, 1979. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A stunning disco classic from Dan Hartman – maybe an unlikely talent for the dancefloors, given his image on the cover – but an artist who definitely went onto shape the sound of the clubs at the end of the 70s! The album's got the Hartman groove really hitting hard, and right on the money – a tightly compressed approach to disco that really lays heavily on the hooks – in a style that's similar to where Peter Brown was going at the time, with a similar compressed sensibility that gets past any of the fluff that was drowning others in the disco generation! In fact, it could well be argued that the approach here really helps focus a dancefloor sound towards the modes of the 80s – while still allowing for the fluid soul of the disco years too – a style that's summed up perfectly in the album's extended classic "Vertigo/Relight My Fire", which features famous vocals by Loleatta Holloway! Other titles are all sweet too – and include "Free Ride", "I Love Makin Music", "Just For Fun", "Love Strong", and "Hands Down". LP, Vinyl record album

A great second album from Mahavishnu Orchestra – one that has them still very might in the same tight formation as the first! As before, there's a heck of a lot of power here – monstrous work on drums from Billy Cobham, sharp-edged guitar from John McLaughlin, and a range of great keyboards from Jan Hammer – all played without the cliche of his later years! The group's completed by the surprisingly great electric violin of Jerry Goodman and the bass of Rick Laird – and the tunes nicely blend a few more contemplative moments with full-on, rock-inspired fusion jamming. The first Bob Marley album on Island Records – and the start of a really legendary run that would not only transform reggae in the 70s, but the rest of popular music as well! Chris Blackwell's partially at the helm on production, but the album was mostly recorded in classic Kingston studios – Randy's, Dynamic, and Harry J's – and retains the same vibe as some of Marley's earlier work, but with more of the forward-thinking vision he brought to his time at Island. Bunny Livingston lays down some excellent percussion on the set – and rhythm is from the team of Aston and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums. Mercury/LMLR (France), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... On August 6, 2021
❔
One of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – and sometimes, the mellower tracks show a wonderful talent for harmonies coming even more fully to the top. But the real appeal of the record has always been the bold, bassy grooves that hit strongly just as ensemble funk was exploding in the mainstream during the early years of disco – making plenty of space for the Players and their contemporaries to grab up new audiences who never would have touched a record like this five years before! There's plenty of grit in the grooves on the best numbers – a style that's maybe not as dirty as on Westbound, but still more than enough to make any real funk fan proud. Titles include "Fire", "Together", "Together/Feelings", "It's All Over", "Runnin' From the Devil", "Smoke", "What The Hell", and "I Want To Be Free". LP, Vinyl record album

A seminal album from one of the hippest groups going on the South African scene of the 70s – a combo who mixed equal parts electric jazz and R&B, in a mode that's strongly inspired by American groups of the time! The Pacific Express vibe has plenty of echoes of the Earth Wind & Fire sound of the mid 70s, but also has jazzier tones at times – especially on the keyboards, which hit some spacey Stevie Wonder moments on some of our favorite tracks. Other tunes come across with a bit more of a crossover vibe – a style clearly engineered to overcome the racial boundaries in South Africa at the time, and one that helped the group sneak in the back door to fame The jazz component of some of the best tracks is especially high – mixing keyboard and guitar lines next to more biting sax work – and players in the group include Basil Coetzee, Robbie Jansen, and other luminaries who went onto solo fame in later years. Titles include "Feelings", "Brother", "Sky Ride II", "Black Fire", "Love Your Baby Right", "You're Everything", and "Windsong". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! Don't let the title and cover put you off – because the album's neither a version of the Chariots Of Fire soundtrack, nor the kind of hokey effort you might expect! The album's got a sweet mix of jazz and R&B – a vibe that Ernie learned from LA scenemates The Crusaders, but which he explores here in a variety of ways – from upbeat groovers to mellow ballads, all voiced at a very personal level on alto sax. Some of the most righteous sounds ever recorded at the legendary Studio One label in Jamaica – 70s music that marks a time when the company was moving into some of the more thoughtful, meaningful lyrics that rose to prominence during the rasta generation! The shift is no surprise, given that Bob Marley once recorded for Studio One – but by the time of these tracks, Marley had risen to international fame on Island Records – helping to open the door for a huge new audience for the message and the music, which Studio One was only happy to address with great tracks like this! A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. ✨✧ PattoGive It All Away – The Albums 1970 to 1973 (Patto/Hold Your Fire/Roll Em Smoke Em/Monkey's Bum) (4CD set) ... CD
Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four full albums from Patto – presented here in a complete box set! First up is the self-titled Patto – the debut album from a group who were never huge at the time, but who've gone onto become one of the best-remembered acts from the Vertigo Records scene – thanks to the sound of this amazing debut! The record is extremely hard to peg – it's definitely got some jazz inspiration in the way the songs are put together – especially since group member Ollie Halsall uses some great vibes – but the whole thing's hardly a jazz rock set at all – as the tunes are maybe more open at times, or a bit gritty at others – always topped by the unique vocals of Mike Patto. The record is both freewheeling and down to earth at the same time – a hard thing to pull off – and titles include "The Man", "Hold Me Back", "Time To Die", "Red Glow", and "Government Man". Hold Your Fire is a really great second set from Patto – a record that maybe tips the balance more strongly towards guitar sounds than the previous, but one that still preserves all their really unique sense of arrangements and songwriting! Vocalist Mike Patto is kind of a lost legend from early 70s rock – a singer who might have given some of the bigger Brit names a run for their money, had he ever gotten a chance to really shine in the spotlight. But it's also that suppressed fame that makes his presence on this record so great – a completely unselfconscious approach that fits in both with the grittier numbers and some of the more open, chromatic tunes. Titles include "Hold Your Fire", "Give It All Away", "See You At The Dance Tonight", and "How's Your Father". Next is Roll Em Smoke Em – maybe the funkiest record ever cut by Mike Patto and crew – a set that's got a nicely loose, unbridled feel – and plenty of funky drums and percussion from John Halsey! The group have really hit their prime here – so much so, they almost don't need any larger concepts or ideas to guide them – and are just comfortable to get together and work out some nicely rough-edged ideas – with Patto himself sounding maybe a bit more blue-eyed soulful/rocker, and Ollie Halsell kicking up his guitar with a lot more fuzz. Titles include "Flat Footed Woman", "Singing The Blues On Reds", "Loud Green Song", "Turn Turtle", and "Peter Abraham". Last up is Monkey's Bum – material that was intended to become the fourth album from Patto – an excellent UK group who never fully got their due! Patto have a great sound that's kind of like higher progressive rock ideas taken down into bluesier territory – with an earthiness that maybe a few key contemporaries got right – maybe Traffic or Procol Harum – and, like both of those groups, one that was capable of really hitting things right on the nose with a special sound that was all their own. Mike Patto only got better as a singer as the years went on, bringing more soulful phrasing into his lyrics – which is also echoed by some of the keyboard and rhythm work here, but never in a way that's too slavishly blues-rock or white boy soul, and certainly with the right sort of complexity to warrant the group's attention by Island in the early 70s. Titles include "Hedyob", "My Days Are Numbered", "Sugar Cube 1967", "I Need You", "Good Friend", and "Get Up & Dig It" – plus a great cover of "Last Night I Had A Dream". CD set features the bonus tracks "Beat The Drum", "Bad News", and "Hanging Rope". CD

✨✧ Hannibal Marvin PetersonChildren Of The Fire ... LP
Sunrise, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful, most sophisticated, and most fully-realized sessions from trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson – and a record that features some incredible larger backings from David Amram! The set's a haunting suite dedicated to the children of Vietnam – one that starts out in a darkly brooding mode, but which opens up with some extremely redemptive moments as the set moves on – done in a very spiritual approach to soul jazz that's strongly in the Alice Coltrane tradition! Instrumentation includes a small string group, plus added percussion – and musicians on the set include Art Webb on flute, Richard Davis on bass, Billy Hart on drums, Michael Cochran on piano, and Hannibal himself on both trumpet and koto. The lovely Alpha Johnson sings on a few of the album's tracks, and the whole thing is very warm and deep, and has a lot of variance in tempo and mood, with a strong spiritual feel similar to that of some of the more ambitious Strata East recordings from the time! Titles include "Forest Sunrise", "The Bombing", "Prayer", "Aftermath", and "Finale". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pucho & The Latin Soul BrothersHeat/Jungle Fire ... CD
Prestige/BGP (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of killers from Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers – back to bck on a single CD! First up is Heat – a record that's beyond definition – as it combines Latin, soul, jazz, and even a few funky touches – all into one totally amazing sound! This one really gets all the elements right – and the fantastic Pazant Brothers (Eddie & Al) are on sax and trumpet (respectively), and a young Neal Creque is on piano, really bringing a sharp edge to Pucho's groove that other Latin combos of the time never had – and the set also features some vocals by Jackie Soul on a few cuts, who's a great singer that really helps cross a few cuts over into Latin Soul territory. Titles include the soul jazz cuts "Heat" and "Psychedelic Pucho", plus other great Latin soul cuts, like "Payin' Dues" and "Candied Yam". Jungle Fire is one of the greatest albums by this funky Latin combo! The record differs from some of their earlier Prestige albums in that the tracks are longer, more instrumental, and have a hard fuzzy electric groove. The band jams hard in a way that's more like some of the funk combos of the early 70s, than the Latin groups from which they came – and that's no problem by us, because the results are wonderful! Includes two funky numbers written by Sonny Phillips – "The Spokerman" and "Jamilah" – plus a great extended cover of "Cloud Nine". Great horn work from the funky Pazant Brothers, plus Seldon Powell, who also plays flute and tenor on the album – and other jazz funk stars on the album include Bernard Purdie, Billy Butler, and Neal Creque, Pucho's right hand man! A long-overdue second album from Alan Braufman – maybe not the most familiar name in jazz, but a reed player who gave the world one fantastic album on India Navigation back in the 70s – and who now finally returns as a leader for this equally great second set! Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Other players include Cooper Moore on piano, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Ken Filiano on bass, and Andrew Drury on drums – with a bit of percussion at times from Michael Wimberly. Bryson is still a mighty fresh talent at this point in his career – glowing with an inner light that really shines through – on tracks that include "Go For It", "We Don't Have To Talk", "Turn It On", "Words", "Let Me Be The One You Need", "Give Me Your Love", and "Don't Play With Fire". A Windy City group who really live up to their name – working here with a set of all original material by their tenorist, John Fournier – who's got a great way with the sort of tune you might have heard from Horace Silver or Blue Mitchell back in the day! The group comes across with a vibe that makes the whole thing seem effortless – not one of these contemporary combos who are trying too hard for a vintage Blue Note vibe, but a set of younger musicians who let that spirit inform them, while they take off in their own direction – with Fournier on tenor, Marques Carroll on trumpet, Amr Fahmy on Fender Rhodes, Larry Brown Jr on guitar, Andrew Vogt on bass, and Keith Brooks on drums. The set features guest work from Nicolas Payton and Raul Midon, but we love them more than enough on their own – on titles that include "Detroit Will Rise Again", "Down & Out In Buffalo", "God Bless The Patient Teacher", "Nora Calls From The Moon", "Her Eyes Are Blue & Sometimes Grey", and "It Takes A Spark To Start A Fire". Sublime early work from Johnny Mathis – a session that really shows the jazzy charm he had at the start! The setting is as spare as you might guess from the title – no large orchestra, and instead just two guitars (played by Tony Mottola and Al Caiola) supporting Johnny's vocals in a very open-ended sort of way! Mathis' approach to the session is amazing – really stretching out with the lack of traditional structure, and really working those amazing tones and phrasings at a level that he would hardly ever match again on record. Kenji Mori may be the firebird on tenor and flute for the date – but the album also features some mighty bold lines on guitar from the young Kazumi Watanabe! Kazumi's got a dynamic sense of energy that really shapes the record from the start – these long, twangy electric passages that find a way to be fierce one minute, gentle the next – almost phrased at points as if he was holding a reed instrument instead of a stringed one! Mori's lines on flute are an especially great counterpart to the guitar – shapes in sound that really have an organic quality as they spin out. The group also features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and Steve Jackson on drums – and titles include the long tunes "Firebird (parts 1 & 2)", "K&J", and "A Time For Us". CD

Mercury, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CD

A masterpiece from Spacemen 3 – maybe one of the greatest psychedelic albums of all time – and one that we'd rank right up there with giants from the late 60s, and all those lesser-known acts that always seem to get rediscovered over the years! There's a definite 80s quality to the production, but there's also a timeless approach here that really sets the trio apart from so many of their contemporaries who'd reach for fuzz and echo, yet end up sounding completely dated just a few years later. Everything seems set to "rumble" – the Vox Starstreamer, the Fender Jaguar, the Telecaster, Rickenbacker, and other vintage instruments that made this drum-less record so wonderful right at the core – and although the vocals are part of the package too, it's really the guitars that do all the singing here. Titles include "Come Down Softly To My Soul", "How Does It Feel", "Let Me Down Gently", "Lord Can You Hear Me", "Suicide", "Honey", and "I Believe It". LP, Vinyl record album

A really unusual idea for a collection – one that follows similar territory of other collections that trawl through the hinterlands of rare singles from the late 50s and early 60s, but with a completely different vibe overall! The music here is sad and blue – really moody numbers that fit the heartbroken quality of the cover image – often served up by artists who might be best known for their more rocking tracks, but who here often sing slowly to spare, sad-tinged backings – the sort that shows that even the tuff cats on the block have some feelings too! An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin America series for that other label, but still there in the conception – and Gato blows with that sharp, soulful, spiritual tone that we love so much from this period – so different than the later sound of his smoother records. Lonnie Liston Smith is on piano in the group – getting pretty outside at times, as on his work with Pharoah Sanders – and the combo also features lots of great percussion from Airto and Mtume, too. The group here has some key figures fleshing out the sound – a young Joe Henderson, blowing tenor with a very edgey quality – the very versatile Richard Davis on bass – and the great Roy Haynes on drums, very much at his most fluid interpretation of rhythm! Elektra/DBK Works, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul – typical for the fusion division of Elektra at the time, where Callier's hard-to-peg work was relegated. There's some really great songs on the record – and although the arrangements sometimes lack the sensitivity of the Cadet scorings of earlier years, they're still pretty great from a modern soul perspective. Richard Evans is producing and arranging the session, and Terry's still got help from a lot of Chicago friends like Minnie Riperton, Eddie Harris, and Phil Upchurch – all of whom help to keep the album relatively strong. Titles include some really nice originals, like "African Violet" and "Butterfly", both of which are some of Terry's best compositions from the time – plus "Love Two Love", "Martin St Martin", "Street Fever", and "Be A Believer". Oddball, brilliant, slyly concept-driven hip hop from Serengeti in his Kenny Dennis alter ego! The story behind the 1979 Kenny Dennis Demos is that the working class Chicago every man Kenny got signed and cut a couple demos in the style of the times in the late 70s – an opportunity to hear that uber-distinctive voice we've known and loved since Dennehy rap over of a late model disco groove on "Field On Fire". "Up To The Middle" is even wilder, starting with an echoey, kinda roots rock sound that builds to something like guitar and beats driven Afro Rock before rolling back to how it started. 7-inch, Vinyl record

A great set from saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett – almost back to his roots in the St Louis underground scene, as the album's a live recording of long spiritual jazz tracks, arguably a lot more compelling than most of Bluiett's studio work from the time! The album was recorded at Sweet Basil in 1983 – with a group that features John Hicks on piano, Fred Hopkins on bass, Marvin Smitty Smith on drums, and Chief Bey playing some extra African percussion. Bluiett's tone is wonderful – deep and round, but also raspy, almost in the manner of Pharoah Sanders – and the group plays an incredible version of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", a nice take on Curtis Lundy's "Gumbo", and the cuts "Song Song", "Ebu", and "Headless Blues". Although Gene Chandler wasn't scoring nearly as big in the 80s as he was in the 60s, he was still a great vocalist, and could turn out some good material when he wanted to. This album's more than enough proof of that – and it features some good mellow tracks that have Gene singing in a sophisticated quiet storm sort of style. The best number is "Haven't I Heard That Line Before" – and other tracks include "You'll Never Be Free Of Me", "Lucy", and "Please You Tonight".
