Earth Wind & FireAll 'N All (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1977. New Copy ... $4.99 7.99
Genius, pure genius! It was hard for Earth, Wind & Fire to go wrong at this point – and the album's a stellar blend of jazz, funk, and soul, all done in that perfect style they'd hit by the mid 70s. And even though this one was a monster album, of the type that you see in everyone's record collection from the time, it's still got a freshness that we always forget about – and lots of nice twists and turns that show that the band hadn't lost their more sophisticated roots. Case in point is the wonderful "Brazilian Rhyme", a short little groover that you'll instantly recognize as a sample from the first Tribe Called Quest album. Other tracks include "Jupiter", "In The Marketplace", "Magic Mind", "Runnin", "Be Ever Wonderful", and "Serpentine Fire". Plus, the CD features bonus tracks "Would You Mind?", "Runnin (original Hollywood mix)", and "Brazilian Rhyme (live)". CD

Earth Wind & FireGratitude ... CD
Columbia, 1975. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
Great stuff! Although a live album, Gratitude is one of Earth Wind & Fire's greatest from the mid 70s – a very tight batch of grooves that proves that Maurice White & Co. could play just as well on stage as they could in the studio – and the noise of the crowd going wild is enough to confirm that! And although a live set, the record's actually a bit half and half – with a few added studio tunes to keep the hits coming. Includes their classic version of Skip Scarborough's "Can't Hide Love", plus the mellow jams "Yearnin' Learnin'" and "Reasons", the funky "Shining Star", and a great cover of "Sun Goddess", which was also done by Ramsey Lewis with the group. Features a bonus live medley too – not on the original album! CD

A 4 track promo ep off The Need Of Love, one of the early EWF LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago. Earth Wind & FireIllumination (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! LP version features bonus tracks – instrumentals of "Lovely People" and "Elevated". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, Early 70s. Very Good ... $6.99
2 really great early numbers from Earth Wind & Fire! "Mom" is a lot nicer than you might think from the title – not sappy at all, but a righteous soul number with that sublime blend of jazz and soul that EWF had in their best early records. "Power" is even better – a really long track that begins with some chugging funky guitars, over which you'll hear some of Maurice White's trademark electric kalimba – grooving nicely as some hipper jazzy sounds come into the mix! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Columbia sleeve with some pen. Includes juke box strips.)

One of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Surely this one couldn't have been made without the spiritual advancements in jazz made by the AACM – and EWF couldn't have helped rubbing shoulders with those players, considering that they all often gigged together in the Chicago studio scene, and that they'd also shared some time together in groups like The Pharoahs and Phil Cohran's Artistic Heritage Ensemble. Titles include "Energy", "Beauty", and a nice remake of Donny Hathaway's "Everything is Everything". LP, Vinyl record album

Spiritual, soulful, and oh, so beautiful! This record captures Earth Wind & Fire at a perfect transition moment – when they've still got some of their avant jazz roots, but are leaning towards the smooth soulful funk sound that put them on the charts a few years later. The whole thing's a wonderful mix of spiritualism and funky jazz – and it includes their massive cover of "Mighty Mighty", plus a lot of tracks with cool instrumentation, like "Kalimba Story", "Drum Song", and "Caribou". Great jazzy groovers, all of them! Contains 4 previously unissued tracks – "Ain't No Harm To Moan", "Step's Tune", "Dreams", and "Fair But So Uncool (Walkin In N'Awlins mix)". CD

Columbia/Sony, 1974/1975/1983. New Copy 3CD ... $6.99
A trio of great albums from Earth Wind & Fire – packaged together here in a single set! First up is Open Our Eyes – a set that's spiritual, soulful, and oh, so beautiful! Next is That's The Way Of The World – Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and Afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth, Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid-70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". The last album is from the early 80s, but the Powerlight is burning bright – Maurice White, Philip Bailey, and the rest of the group still very much in classic formation! Even on a post-70s set like this, Earth Wind & Fire still manage to come up with tracks that beat the rest of the ensemble funk groups that grew up in their wake – groovers that still set a new level for the boogie generation, and mellow tracks that cross over beautifully without ever getting to soppy or adult contemporary. The balance is a tricky one, but the group always manage to pull it off – and guide the whole presentation of work here with enough class and care to show that the whole thing's the result of genius planning, and not just some happy accident! Titles include "Something Special", "Miracles", "Fall In Love With Me", "Straight From The Heart", and "Spread Your Love". CD

A big hit for the group – and a great album of smooth funky soul! Spirit is a perfect example of the way that Earth Wind & Fire could tighten things up, yet still keep them real – holding onto the deeply spiritual side that first made them great – but also focusing their energy towards a wider audience that showed their influence for years! Of course, with Charles Stepney helping out on production, it's hard to miss – and he's one of the few cats who could handle a blend like this so well. The compression in the band's playing is impeccable – with just the right mix of spacey spiritualism, sophisticated jazzy playing, and a straight ahead love of the soulful hook. Includes the instrumentals "Biyo" and "Departure", plus the vocal tracks "Earth Wind & Fire","Burnin Bush", "Spirit", "Imagination", and "Getaway", all produced to perfection by Maurice White and Charles Stepney! The beats are pretty heavy at points – making for plenty of groovers – but the group almost seems to shine most on the ballads, which continue to provide a perfect showcase for the vocals of Philip Bailey and Maurice White. Sure Fire Soul Ensemble are tighter than ever, and have really perfected a trademark sound – a style that's got the breaking drums of a vintage funky 45, the moody horns of an Ethio funk group, and the kind of organ and keyboard lines that would be right at home on a vintage album by The Meters! The blend is wonderful, and carried off to perfection here – touched with some added percussion and other surprises over the course of the record – but all with this lean, sharp instrumental style that never needs any vocals, nor any other added elements to hold our interest! The set begins with a cover of the Roy Ayers tune "Aragon" – then moves through originals that include "Build Bridges", "Roxy Funk", "Gloria's Anthem", "El Nino", "Sucker Punch", "Costa Blues", and "Campus Life". Earth Wind & Fire are plenty darn spiritual most of the rest of the year, but here they bring a special sort of spirit to a great set of seasonal tunes – one that's maybe one of the best soul Christmas albums we've heard in a long time! The group have lost none of their groove over the years – and the overall vibe of the music is right up there with their classics of the late 70s – an upbeat, righteous sort of crackle that really keeps things moving throughout, and which brings lots of new energy to old Holiday favorites like "Joy To the World", "What Child Is This", "Little Drummer Boy", "Sleigh Ride", "Snow", "December", and "Jingle Bell Rock". CD features the whole album Holiday from 2014 – plus other bonus Christmas tracks that include "Gather Round" and "One World", and the tracks "Get Your Hump On This Christmas" with Cleveland Brown, "I Asked For A Miracle (God gave me you mix)" by Philip Bailey with Full Force, and "Open Your Heart" by Maurice White. Warner/BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of spiritual soul classics – the rare early Warner Brothers albums from Earth Wind & Fire – back to back on a single CD! Earth, Wind & Fire's first album was recorded at a time when the group recently had ties to the Chicago soul and jazz scenes, and a range of experience that ran the gamut from work with Sun Ra, the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Pharoahs, Ramsey Lewis, and countless other influential groups. Headed up by Maurice White on drums and percussion, the group forged an amazing blend of all these influences, creating a future soul sound that pushed black music to the next level – taking a wealth of previously underground modes of expression, and fusing them into a soaring sound that would soon put them at the top of the charts. This album's a lot looser and freer than their Columbia albums – with plenty of raw funk and some nice off-beat jazz soling. Includes the classic break track "C'Mon Children", plus "Fan The Fire", "Bad Tune", and "Moment Of Truth". Need Of Love is one of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago! At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based playing, and a number of moments that almost get "out" in the solos! Earth Wind & Fire are at their height here – mixing together soul and funk with a set of influences that includes African percussion and Brazilian jazz – then blending the whole thing effortlessly into a cosmic sound that's simply breathless! "Keep Your Head To The Sky" is a song of pride that became an instant underground classic; "Zanzibar" is an incredible reworking of Edu Lobo's famous composition, turning the Brazilian baroque track into a spacey groover that soars on for 13 minutes; and "Evil" is a great tune that features the electrified Kalimba that became the band's sonic and legal trademark over the years! An expanded take on the original "Actions" composition – originally recorded by Don Cherry, with composer Krzystof Penderecki – and extended here by original material from reedman Mats Gustafsson! The original recording was a key juncture between two different avant worlds on the European scene – and this updated set is equally powerful – as it features an all-star group of younger improvisers – with Gustafsson on baritone and leading the group – in a lineup that includes Per Texas Johansson on tenor and flute, Christer Bothen on bass clarinet, Anna Hogberg on alto, Marial Berthel on trombone, Reine Fiske on guitar, Alex Zethson on Hammond organ, Torbjorn Zetterberg on electric bass, and Goran Kajfes, Niklas Barno, and Susansa Santos Silva on trumpets! The strong use of trumpets really echoes Cherry's legacy, but there's also a very different vibe to this take on Penderecki's mix of composition and improvisation – one that's maybe more careful, spacious, and thoughtful than the original - a great tribute not just to Gustafsson's legacy, but also the evolution of improvisation over the decades. A different sound than usual from the Fire Orchestra of Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin – a set that still features the large spontaneous composition style of the group, but which also has them working with singer Mariam Wallentin – whose vocals really add a lot to the whole process! Wallentin's a singer with a very powerful presence – and a style that's more innately tuneful than usual for the Fire ensemble – which makes for a very unusual, very creative mix with instrumentation that includes Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax, Per Texas Johansson on bass clarinet and oboe, Isak Hedtjarn on b sharp clarinet and alto, Susana Santos Silva on trumpet, Johan Berthling on bass, and Andreas Werliin on drums. The set also features keyboards from Tomas Hallonsten, which changes things up a bit too – as does the slight use of violin and viola – all of which makes for a record that has the group going way beyond jazz, and opening up a new audience for their sound. An excellent set from the great Gato Barbieri – one of the gems from his earlier years on record, and an album that's very much in the best spirit of his sides for Impulse in the early 70s! There' definitely some Latin currents in the rhythm – not as strongly stated as on his Latin America series for that other label, but still there in the conception – and Gato blows with that sharp, soulful, spiritual tone that we love so much from this period – so different than the later sound of his smoother records. Lonnie Liston Smith is on piano in the group – getting pretty outside at times, as on his work with Pharoah Sanders – and the combo also features lots of great percussion from Airto and Mtume, too. All tracks are nice and long, and very searching – and titles include "El Parana", "Antonico", "El Sertao", and "Maria Domingas". CD

CBS/Afro 7 (Estonia), Early 80s. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $14.99
A set of rare tracks from the vaults of CBS Records in Kenya – tunes that really show a nicely complex approach to the groove! Black Fire kick things off with "Fire" – a tune that's got a reggae vibe, but a sound that's quite different than the style of Kingston! The cut's followed by "Got The Feelin" by S&D Majek, which bounces and bubbles along with a bassline that might have made Cymande proud – but with a very different vibe overall! Ovid handles the two tracks on the flipside – "Operator", which is more in the Kenyan reggae mode – and "Karibun", which has more of an upbeat clubby groove! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In the die-cut cover, including download card.)

Alan BraufmanFire Still Burns ... CD
Valley Of Search, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A long-overdue second album from Alan Braufman – maybe not the most familiar name in jazz, but a reed player who gave the world one fantastic album on India Navigation back in the 70s – and who now finally returns as a leader for this equally great second set! Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Other players include Cooper Moore on piano, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Ken Filiano on bass, and Andrew Drury on drums – with a bit of percussion at times from Michael Wimberly. Titles include "Creation", "Alone Again", "The Fire Still Burns", "Home", and "No Floor No Ceiling". CD

Malaco, 1989. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A great later set from Shirley Brown – an artist you might know best for her Stax work of the 70s, but who sounds wonderful here in a completely different mode! The album was done for Malaco at the end of the 80s, but it's got a vibe that's much more contemporary R&B than some of the label's other offerings – less bluesy soul, and more this cool, classy approach to soul music that really offers a new showcase for Shirley's great vocals. A number of tracks have a sweet new jack groove – which works surprisingly well for Brown – and titles include "King Size Love", "Silent Treatment", "What Cha Gonna Do When The Money Runs Out", "Tell Me Something Good", "Take Me To Your Heart", and "Anticipation". DKV & Joe McPheeFire Each Time (6CD set) ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2017. New Copy 6CD ... $59.99
The title here is very apt – as this fantastic quartet seem to set a different kind of fire on every one of the CDs in the set – six different performances, recorded over the space of two months – in Paris, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Poland! The group should be well-known to lovers of improvised music from earlier Okka Disk recordings in the 90s – and the passage of two decades has only made them sharper and more intense – especially when the tenor and pocket trumpet of Joe McPhee joins the lineup of Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums. The set of recordings is dedicated to James Baldwin – which you might have guessed from the title – and the whole thing is a fitting tribute to the transformation of ideas about freedom and identity over the passage of time. Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of gems from the early years of reggae – stacked back to back in a 2CD set, along with a huge amount of bonus tracks too! First up is the legendary Freedom album from Clancy Eccles – one of the first great talents to emerge in the Jamaican scene of the 60s – a singer whose recorded history even predates rocksteady and ska, and who had an undeniable impact on the early sound of reggae! Eccles is a genius – a singer/songwriter with a strong sense of soul, and an approach that really opened up the way for a new level of humanity in Jamaican music – as you'll hear on titles that include "Two Of A Kind", "Mount Zion", "Fattie Fattie", "What Will Your Mother Say", "Freedom", "I Need You", "The World Needs Loving", and "Dollar Train". The Dynamites were Clancy Eccles backing band at the same time as the Freedom album – and they step out here in an album of their own – one produced by Clancy himself, but issued even before they backed him up on Freedom! The set features numbers by the group, some organ tunes by Winston Wright, and two vocal appearances by King Stitt – on titles that include "John Public", "Eternally", "Sam Fie", "This Is The Night", "One Way Street", "Vigorton 2", "Fire Corner", "Soul Language", and "Say What You Say". Plus, this 2CD set has a huge amount of bonus tracks – 13 more numbers by Eccles – plus another 13 by The Dynamites, King Stitt, Val Bennett, and Winston Wright. A huge amount of music, all packaged with the usual deep notes and high quality that makes the Doctor Bird label one of the greatest reissue labels for Jamaican music! CD

Soloists include Ramon Lopez on congas, Pete Erskine on drums, Kevin Jordan on trumpet, and Tony Campise on flute – and titles include the tasty Latin groover "Ramon Lopez", plus the cuts "Quiet Friday", "Hogfat Blues", "Roy's Blues", and "Pete Is A Four Letter Word". As before, there's a heck of a lot of power here – monstrous work on drums from Billy Cobham, sharp-edged guitar from John McLaughlin, and a range of great keyboards from Jan Hammer – all played without the cliche of his later years! The group's completed by the surprisingly great electric violin of Jerry Goodman and the bass of Rick Laird – and the tunes nicely blend a few more contemplative moments with full-on, rock-inspired fusion jamming. Titles include "Miles Beyond", "One Word", "Sanctuary", "Open Country Joy", "Resolution", "Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love", and "Thousand Island Park". LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet little disco set from Herbie Mann – recorded in collaboration with the Fire Island soul vocal trio! The group's got a sound that's kind of compelling – not as sweet or smooth as some of the other disco trios of the time, and with an approach that almost has the voices moving in contrast to one another, playing off harmonies in a mode that's similar to that used on some of the Roy Ayers club tracks of the late 70s. The groove's surprisingly nice on the best numbers – more funky jazz than throwaway disco – with plenty of room for Herbie to solo, and some nice use of electric piano as well. Includes the great "Summer Strut", plus the tracks "Rhythmatism", "Flute Love", "You Are The Song", and "Welcome Sunrise". LP, Vinyl record album

Kenji Mori may be the firebird on tenor and flute for the date – but the album also features some mighty bold lines on guitar from the young Kazumi Watanabe! Kazumi's got a dynamic sense of energy that really shapes the record from the start – these long, twangy electric passages that find a way to be fierce one minute, gentle the next – almost phrased at points as if he was holding a reed instrument instead of a stringed one! Mori's lines on flute are an especially great counterpart to the guitar – shapes in sound that really have an organic quality as they spin out. The group also features Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and Steve Jackson on drums – and titles include the long tunes "Firebird (parts 1 & 2)", "K&J", and "A Time For Us". CD

That track's quite unusual – a highlife number, but one that also has some more trippy elements, including a bit of distortion on the guitars and keyboards, and raw percussion and vocals that are more live and spontaneous, and rootsier than more conventional highlife recordings. Prestige/BGP (UK), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A pair of killers from Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers – back to bck on a single CD! First up is Heat – a record that's beyond definition – as it combines Latin, soul, jazz, and even a few funky touches – all into one totally amazing sound! This one really gets all the elements right – and the fantastic Pazant Brothers (Eddie & Al) are on sax and trumpet (respectively), and a young Neal Creque is on piano, really bringing a sharp edge to Pucho's groove that other Latin combos of the time never had – and the set also features some vocals by Jackie Soul on a few cuts, who's a great singer that really helps cross a few cuts over into Latin Soul territory. Titles include the soul jazz cuts "Heat" and "Psychedelic Pucho", plus other great Latin soul cuts, like "Payin' Dues" and "Candied Yam". Jungle Fire is one of the greatest albums by this funky Latin combo! The record differs from some of their earlier Prestige albums in that the tracks are longer, more instrumental, and have a hard fuzzy electric groove. The band jams hard in a way that's more like some of the funk combos of the early 70s, than the Latin groups from which they came – and that's no problem by us, because the results are wonderful! Includes two funky numbers written by Sonny Phillips – "The Spokerman" and "Jamilah" – plus a great extended cover of "Cloud Nine". Great horn work from the funky Pazant Brothers, plus Seldon Powell, who also plays flute and tenor on the album – and other jazz funk stars on the album include Bernard Purdie, Billy Butler, and Neal Creque, Pucho's right hand man! Oddball, brilliant, slyly concept-driven hip hop from Serengeti in his Kenny Dennis alter ego! The story behind the 1979 Kenny Dennis Demos is that the working class Chicago every man Kenny got signed and cut a couple demos in the style of the times in the late 70s – an opportunity to hear that uber-distinctive voice we've known and loved since Dennehy rap over of a late model disco groove on "Field On Fire". "Up To The Middle" is even wilder, starting with an echoey, kinda roots rock sound that builds to something like guitar and beats driven Afro Rock before rolling back to how it started. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Impulse (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! Vocals are all in English, and tunes are all originals – which really puts these guys ahead of so many of their contemporaries, who were often just covering tunes from the US! There's lots of Detroit soul influence in the arrangements, which are upbeat and swinging – and even the occasional garagey moments still have a way of coming across with a nice current of R&B. A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. 2 of Gato Barbieri's greatest albums of the 70s – back to back on one CD! Bolivia is one of Gato's better albums from the early 70s – and like a lot of his Latin-themed ones, a swirling mix of soulful soloing, modal grooves, and unbridled emotion. Lonnie Liston Smith is playing piano on most cuts, and he's a perfect blend for Barbieri's horn – giving it the same sort of soulful base as in his classic recordings with Pharoah Sanders. Titles include "Merceditas", "Eclypse", "Bolivia", and "Vidala Triste". Under Fire is filled with Latin rhythm influences forged on Gato's Impulse sessions of the same time, plus some nice spiritual blowing in the Pharoah Sanders tradition in which he was linked in the immediate post-Coltrane years. Airto and Mtume are on percussion on most tracks, and Lonnie Liston Smith plays some pretty outside piano on the set. All tracks are long, and titles include "El Parana", "Antonico", "El Sertao", and "Maria Domingas". CD

One of the great albums from Terry Callier's "second chapter" on record – a time when he was working for Elektra Records, and doing work that was a bit straighter soul than before – and also slightly jazzy as well! The record's kind of a mix of jazzy grooves and smoother soul – typical for the fusion division of Elektra at the time, where Callier's hard-to-peg work was relegated. There's some really great songs on the record – and although the arrangements sometimes lack the sensitivity of the Cadet scorings of earlier years, they're still pretty great from a modern soul perspective. Richard Evans is producing and arranging the session, and Terry's still got help from a lot of Chicago friends like Minnie Riperton, Eddie Harris, and Phil Upchurch – all of whom help to keep the album relatively strong. Titles include some really nice originals, like "African Violet" and "Butterfly", both of which are some of Terry's best compositions from the time – plus "Love Two Love", "Martin St Martin", "Street Fever", and "Be A Believer". ✨✧ Roberta FlackQuiet Fire ... LP
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great small combo work by Roberta Flack, recorded early in her career, when she was still one of the hippest things around – and it's among her best records! Roberta's really come into her own as vocalist at this point and solidifying here personal style – with that clear tone and perfectly controlled style and phrasing – balancing a jazzy sensibility with the emotions of her gospel roots. A few tracks have some large arrangements by Arif Mardin, William Eaton, or Deodato – but most tracks feature a core group of studio jazz players that includes players like Joe Farrell, Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey, Hubert Laws, and Bernard Purdie. Includes a version of Eugene McDaniels' "Sunday & Sister Jones", plus "Go Up Moses", "To Love Somebody", "Let Them Talk", and "Sweet Bitter Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green & red Broadway label pressing. Cover has light wear and staple holes in the top left corner.)

✨✧ Gun ClubFire Of Love ... CD
Slash, 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seedy LA postpunk with roots rock swagger – an underground masterpiece! Fire Of Love is legendary in indie and punk circles for being on of the earliest records to go full bore with mix of raw punk drive with blues and country swagger – certainly not the first example of those styles being mixed (hat tip to X, The Cramps, etc), but Gun Club are certainly among the first bands to make it their specific sound and something all their own – and it's not a shtick, it's as natural and real as can be, thanks to front man Jeffrey Lee Pierce's own roots in Texas. It's as firey, original and exciting now as ever! Includes "Sex Beat", "For The Love Of Ivy", "Preaching The Blues", "Ghost On The Highway", "Cool Drink Of Water", "Goodbye Johnny", "Fire Spirit", "She's Like Heroin To Me" and more. CD

✨✧ Woody HermanLight My Fire ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece – one of 2 crazy albums in which Woody Herman's late band meets the Cadet arrangements of Richard Evans. You might think the combination wouldn't work – Woody's big band flourishes meeting up with Evans' compressed soulful grooves – but gosh, the record is simply incredible, and it's one that we'd never part with in a million billion years! Worth it alone for the version of Edu Lobo's "Pontieo", but there's lots of other nice stuff – like "I Say A Little Prayer", "Hush", "Keep On Keepin On", and "Light My Fire". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MetersGetting Funkier All The Time – The Complete Josie, Reprise, & Warner Recordings 1968 to 1977 (Meters/Look Ka Py Py/Struttin/Cabbage Alley/Rejuvenation/Fire On The Bayou/Trick Bag/New Directions/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Warner/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 6 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive package of funky music – and maybe one that no home should be without – as the set includes all the classic Josie Records and Warner Brothers albums by legendary New Orleans funk group The Meters – plus a fair bit of bonus tracks too! The Josie albums are incredible – a lean, powerful blend of funky drums, bass, guitar, and organ – almost the New Orleans answer to Booker T & The MGs, but with a sound that's far funkier overall – and which continues to bring new ears to the magic of The Meters as the years go by! Their Warner work is a bit fuller – as the group were part of a big wave of Nola talent to get the nod from LA – which means that The Meters were able to add in vocals, experiment with arrangements, use additional instrumentation – yet all without ever losing that core groove that made them so great! This package is the first time all the records have been brought together, and many are presented here in the "expanded edition" versions with bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 116 titles on 6CDs – bonus tracks, plus the full albums The Meters, Look Ka Py Py, Struttin, Cabbage Alley, Rejuvenation, Fire On The Bayou, Trick Bag, and New Directions – plus some singles too! ✨✧ Louis Moholo/Evan ParkerBush Fire ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1995. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key linking of two traditions of British avant jazz expression – and a session that's co-led by percussionist Louis Moholo and saxophonist Evan Parker! The sound here is almost more in Parker's camp than it is Moholo's – as the album's improvised tracks have a spare, contemplative quality that builds very slowly – working strongly in space and sound, as the group finds themselves through a rich array of techniques, tones, and expressions. Other players include Barry Guy on bass and piccolo bass (right channel), Gibo Pheto on bass (left channel), and Pule Pheto on piano – and titles include "Bush Fire", "For Chisa", "South Afrika Is Free OK", "Baobab", "Sticks", "Back Beat", and "Flaming July". ✨✧ Ohio PlayersFire ... LP
Mercury, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – and sometimes, the mellower tracks show a wonderful talent for harmonies coming even more fully to the top. But the real appeal of the record has always been the bold, bassy grooves that hit strongly just as ensemble funk was exploding in the mainstream during the early years of disco – making plenty of space for the Players and their contemporaries to grab up new audiences who never would have touched a record like this five years before! There's plenty of grit in the grooves on the best numbers – a style that's maybe not as dirty as on Westbound, but still more than enough to make any real funk fan proud. Titles include "Fire", "Together", "Together/Feelings", "It's All Over", "Runnin' From the Devil", "Smoke", "What The Hell", and "I Want To Be Free". LP, Vinyl record album

Motor (Germany), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The turning point volume in the Mojo Club series – and the volume in which the groove really began to open up into the fantastic mix of styles that's made the series famous! The collection features 19 great tracks that shouldn't sound great together, but they do – a really amazing array of different music from different scenes – put together with a strong sense of panache, and running for much longer than any American compilations of this nature (if there's any that could ever match up!) Titles include "Transamazonica" by Tania Maria, "Zazueira" by Elis Regina, "Jimmy Jean" by Ellen McIlwaine, "Hummin" by Roy Ayers, "Pretty Brown Skin" by Edwin Birdsong, "Pai" by Baden Powell, "Hold Out Your Hand" by Karin Krog, "Use It Or Lose It" by Gotham, "Try To Relax" by Ballinjack, "Return Of The Prodigal Son" by Joe Lee Wilson, "Balanca Pema" by Ronald Mesquita, "Sweet Darling Think It Over" by Junior Wells, "Oba La Vem Ela" by Jorge Ben, "Dyambo" by Hugh Masekela, and "Easin In" by Edwin Starr.
