Georges Delerue/Michel LegrandRich & Famous/One Is A Lonely Number ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1972/1981. Used ... $18.99
Two sweeet little soundtracks – both by French composers, but for films that played here in the US, too! George Delerue really shines on Rich & Famous – coming up with a score that's richer, more sensitive than the narrative itself – filled with gently cascading strings and woodwinds that open up wonderfully – often like these little flowers of sound as the tunes progress, even on some of the more classically-informed numbers. Titles inlcude "Something Strange About You", "Eighteen", "Reading The Script", and "You Owe Me One". Michel Legrand's score for One Is A Lonely Number is a great accompaniment to the Delerue soundtrack – penned almost a decade earlier, and handled with the warm sense of feeling we always love in Legrand's music! Most tunes are relatively mellow, and swell up with a beautiful balance of strings and woodwinds – especially flute – and the set does feature one vocal number by Legrand, "Le Soleil La Mer Et Les Bateaux", plus the instrumental tracks "The Photo", "Fender Rhodes", "Moving On", "Alone In The City", "The Dress", and "Sad Memories". ✨✧ Jerry GoldsmithTora Tora Tora (with bonus tracks) ... CD
20th Century/Film Score Monthly, 1970. Used ... $18.99
Jerry Goldsmith really shines on his score for this WWII action film from the early 70s – a soundtrack that draws on his best dramatic abilities, but also brings in his flair for quick changes in tone and timing as well! There's some occasional "Eastern" elements – usually a bit of koto, used to signify a Japanese scene – and other instrumentation shifts between bold orchestral passages, and these very nice low-toned ones that kind of rumble everything together towards the bottom end of the sound spectrum! Titles include "Little Hope", "The Chancellery", "The 14th Part", "Sunday Morning", "The Waiting Game", "The Final Message", and "Pre-Flight Countdown". CD also features 7 bonus tracks too! CD

Fred Myrow/Jerry FieldingSoylent Green/Demon Seed ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1973/1977. Used ... $24.99
A pair of soundtracks for two of the creepiest horror movies of the 70s – back to back on a single CD, and given the top-shelf Film Score Monthly treatment! First up is the score for Soylent Green – a mix of very moody, unusually-toned passages that are mixed with some mellower, jazzier numbers that offset things nicely – composed by Fred Myrow, but also given a bit of help from horror maestro Gerald Fried! The music is definitely above the norm – not just in the higher budget, but also in the way that things come together sonically – at a level that makes for a lot of surprises throughout – on titles that include "Tab's Pad/Furniture Party", "Shirl & Thorn", "Home Lobby Source", "Can I Do Something For You", and "Sol's Music". Demon Seed is a great one from Jerry Fielding – definitely at the darker side of his sonic spectrum, which is pretty darn fitting, given that the film involves a computer having sex with Julie Christie! There's a sense of evil that resonates in the music right from the start – a mode that's partially borrowed from the Italian giallo generation, but which is given a more varied approach here, often at a level that's very low in the sonic spectrum. Tracks include "Birth Scene", "Probed Or Put To Bed", "Last Voyage", and "Closing Crawl". CD features almost 80 minutes of music – and detailed notes on both scores! CD

✨✧ Ron GrainerOmega Man 2.0 – Unlimited ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
British soundtrack great Ron Grainer makes a great American appearance here – turning in music for the early 70s film The Omega Man – the first film version of I Am Legend! The styles here are much more fitting for the time of the movie's release than the world of America in the future – as there are plenty of great blacksploitation and cop/crime elements that really fit the 70s urban setting of the story – really great elements that make the whole thing very different than the usual horror soundtrack of the period, and which also widen the palette of Grainer's style too! There's also a few familiar themes that are used almost tongue in cheek – instrumental hits that offset the darker mood of the action – and together, the blend of sounds is wonderful – presented here in an overstuffed collection that's well worth the 2.0 billing in the title. Given that the original score never showed up on record in the 70s, this release is long overdue – with titles that include "The Omega Man/Where Have All The People Gone", "Surprise Party/After The Ball", "Zachary Makes His Move", "Richie On The Roof", "The Trap/Nemesis For Neville/Matthias The Victor", "Dutch Takes Over", "Swinging At Nevilles", "Jumped By The Family/The Trial", and "Dutch Takes Over". ✨✧ John BarryMonte Walsh – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great score for an overlooked western comedy – starring Lee Marvin in the title role, and also featuring Jeanne Moreau and Jack Palance! John Barry's not usually associated with the western soundtrack, but here, he takes the moody harmonica stylings of Midnight Cowboy, and expands them with some strong added instrumentation – filled with triumphant passages, and some mellower, more introspective moments. Mama Cass sings vocals on the very groovy title cut "The Good Times Are Comin", and other tunes include "Candle & Bed", "Across The Prairie", "Sit Him High", "That Old Box", "Round Up", and "Missionary Ridge". CD features a lot of bonus tracks, too! CD

✨✧ Elmer BernsteinHeavy Metal – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Elektra/Film Score Monthly, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mostly orchestral score for this early 80s, feature-length animated sci fi film – penned and conducted by the great Elmer Bernstein, with a depth that's surprising, considering the movie! Elmer shows he's a consummate professional here – as he avoids any temptation to make things cheesy or sexy to fit the film, and instead turns out a top-shelf orchestral score played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with some slight occasional voices at times. As with all Film Score Monthly reissues, this one's lavishly done – with a huge booklet of notes and images, and an overstuffed track listing that expands the music to over 70 minutes in length. Titles include "Intro To Green Ball", "Castrate Him", "Queen For A Day", "Pursuit", "Fiste", "Green Ball", "Dem Bones", "Robot Love", "End Of Baby", "The Next Morning", "Fighting", "Den Makes Out", and "Barbarians". ✨✧ Lalo SchifrinTHX 1138 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great stuff from Lalo Schifrin – his under appreciated score for young George Luca's paranoid sci fi thriller! THX 1138 has that sort of Ayn Rand, clean-clothed tyrannical government thing going on, and Lalo's score couldn't be more haunting and perfect! It's full of stark, clean kinda chamber orch sounds to go with the oppressively sterile threat in the film – but it's full of those groovy, moddish touches that make Lalo's work from the era so amazing! Tracks include "Be Happy", "Loneliness Sequence", "You Have Nowhere To Go", "First Escape" and more. CD

✨✧ Tom Scott/Leonard RosenmanConquest Of The Planet Of The Apes/Battle For Planet Of The Apes ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1972/1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Apes, fight like apes! This great CD pairs the soundtracks for the last two Planet Of The Apes films – Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes and Battle For The Planet Of The Apes both of which were much more low-budget and a bit more unbridled than the original movies. Conquest features 14 tracks written by funky jazzer Tom Scott – done in a mix of orchestral suspense and military themes, often handled with some nice touches of 70s electric instrumentation that's similar to that used by Scott in his TV show work. Battle features 17 tracks written by Leonard Rosenmann, who'd scored the earlier Beneath The Planet Of The Apes film, and who here returns to the moody feel of that score. A great package, with a wonderful booklet and nice images – limited to 3000 copies, with titles that include "Ape Servitude", "1991 Restaurant", "Teacher Teacher", "Caesar Departs", "Ricky's Theme", "Electrocution", "The King Is Dead", and "Subjugation Soul". ✨✧ David ShireBig Bus ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Big Bus comes from the same generation as Super Train and The Love Boat – although possibly predating both – and put forth as kind of a spoof of disaster films, years before Airplane, too! David Shire does a wonderful job with the score here – drawing on his best dramatic modes of the 70s, but giving everything a sweet spin to hint at the comedic – which often means a touch of TV in the mix, too. Things are never too serious – even when musically hinting at the serious – and many of the tunes change mood nicely in the middle, which really keeps things lively. There's a whopping 21 tracks in all, plus loads of great Film Score Monthly notes and images from the film – which you might find more enjoyable than watching the movie itself! CD

✨✧ Dimitri Tiomkin36 Hours (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Turner Classic/Film Score Monthly, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stark and jagged soundtrack for this mid 60s thriller that starred James Garner and Eva Marie Saint. The album's one of the few soundtracks on the Vee Jay label, recorded after they'd moved from Chicago to LA, and right before they went bust – and it's a pretty nice set of tracks by Tiomkin, one that follows in his best work of the time. Most tracks are pretty restrained, rumbling like thunder in a mix of piano, woodwinds, and strings – and a few tracks have some lighter themes that are even nicer. The album features a vocal track – "A Heart Must Learn To Cry" – sung by an un-named, Jack Jones-y singer. Instrumental tracks include "Death Of The Gestapo Man", "Impossible Escape", "Deception", "Misleading", "Promenade", "Case Of Spilt Salt", and "Cyanide Pellet". CD

2 war soundtracks – back to back on one CD! Morituri is a little remembered mid 60s film that starred Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner – and which features a dramatic score by Jerry Goldsmith, filled with tense twists and turns, conducted by Lionel Newman. Raid On Entebbe hails from 10 years later, and features Charles Bronson in a hijacking thriller – set to a score by David Shire, then a great talent for such a film! Morituri dominates the CD, with 18 tracks in all – followed by 4 from Entebbe – and titles include "Traffic Jam", "Assignment In Macao", "Boat Drill", "A Lost Cause", "The Hijacking", "The Raid", "The Return", and "The Prisoners". ✨✧ Neal Hefti/Leonard RosenmanSex & The Single Girl/The Chapman Report ... CD
Warner/Film Score Monthly, 1962/1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 60 soundtrack double-header – two great scores back to back! First up is Sex & The Single Girl, a pretty darn groovy soundtrack – one of Neal Hefti's best of the 60s, and the score to a silly sex comedy that starred Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis! Fran Jeffries sings vocals on a few cuts – like "Sex & The Single Girl" and "Anniversary Song" – but the best tunes are the instrumentals, which mix together a lot of electric harpsichord (ala Odd Couple), a bit of flute, and which have a style that's in the mode of the best Quincy Jones or Henry Mancini scoring from the time! Titles include "Legs", "The Game", "Midnight Swim", "City Style", "I Must Know", and "I've Got Love". The Chapman Report is a great mixture of jazzy themes and tense moments – similar to some of Elmer Bernstein's best work in the same style – with driving upbeat numbers sliding into mellower, sadder ones – all fitting perfectly together as a rich tapestry of sound and mood! The players on the set aren't listed, but we're willing to be that there's more than a few ace west coast jazzmen in the group. Titles include "Teresa & Paul", "The Water Man", "Sarah's Theme", "Naomi & Musician", "Naomi & The Mirror", and "Main Title Theme". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Theme From East Of Eden" and "Theme From Rebel Without A Cause". CD

Film Score Monthly, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Ennio Morricone soundtrack from the 80s – not nearly as famous as some of his bigger-name Hollywood scores of the time – but that's one of the reasons why it sounds so great! There's a quality here that often goes back to some of Morricone's best European styles of the generation before – a bit of the action of Le Professional, some of the floating strings of the early 70s thrillers, and some slight atonality that marks his great contribution to horror scoring – all handled without too much mainstream slickness, and a great respect for the best sounds the maestro has to offer! Titles include "Nocturne For Michelle", "Frantic", "On The Roofs Of Paris", "One Flugel Horn", "Six Short Interludes", and "The Paris Project" – plus the vocal tune "I'm Gonna Lose You" sung by Simply Red. CD features a lot more bonus tracks – 12 more titles from the film, with almost 30 minutes of extra music – all wrapped up in a great high-quality Film Score package! CD

✨✧ Oliver Nelson/Jerry FieldingZigzag/Super Cops ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1970/1973. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2 killer 70s soundtracks back to back in one package – both augmented by loads of bonus tracks! First up is the score to Zigzag, a really standout score from Oliver Nelson – a set that's got some of his groovier touches at times, but also features some pretty great straighter scoring as well! The record really shows Nelson stepping out from his older role as a strictly jazz-based arranger – and although there are some jazz touches here, there's also some even more impressive larger orchestrations that soar out with a majestic use of strings. The CD features 10 tracks from the film, 11 more from the album recording for MGM, and 6 especially rare numbers sung by Anita O'Day for the film, and The Outfit! Roy Orbison sings a vocal number called "Zigzag" – and other instrumental tracks include "The Other Car", "Love Theme", "Earphones", "This Robe Is Shot/Out Of Focus", "Breakout", "This Is A Brain Tumor", "Yes Your Honor", and the great "Variation Of Themes", which has a wonderfully dancing bossa groove to it! Anita O'Day songs include "I Concentrate On You", "On Green Dolphin Street", "You Were Meant For Me", and "Everything I Have Is Yours". Jerry Fielding's score to Super Cops is pretty great too – a really driving action soundtrack that's filled with some of his trademark touches! The main theme has a snapping drum that's almost militaristic at times, but a lot more rhythmic – and used to punctuate some of the funkier tracks on the record – giving them a driving, urgent feel that's totally great! Instrumentation often features complicated horn passages, cascading down over one another – but there's some other tracks that are more in a straight ahead funky mode too, with some of the electric 70s cop touches you might expect! The CD features 20 tracks from the original film – and adds in 5 more from the film Hawkins, and another batch of 5 more from Jerry Fielding's Source Cafe, including instrumental cues from The Outfit. Titles include "The Sniper", "Angels/Everybody Down", "Pull The Shade", "Interior Hock Shop", "After Shoot", "Rotunda", "Blood Feud", and "Murder In The Slave Trade". CD

Film Score Monthly, 1961/1966. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
2 fab fab soundtracks – both from swinging 60s sex comedies, and presented here with a huge amount of extra bonus tracks! Penelope is a really groovy soundtrack from Johnny Williams – scored for a goofy heist film starring Natalie Wood, and featuring a wonderful blend of jazzy, bossa, and harmony-styled tunes! The whole thing's extremely lively – and although Williams is working with a larger orchestra on most of the record, there's also some bouncing electric bass on the bottom of most cuts – and nice use of jazzy solo instruments. The title theme "Penelope" is sung in a sunshine harmony mode by The Pennypipers, a group assembled for the record – and other tracks include "Poolside", "The Girl In The Yellow Dress", "Girl Chase", "The Mad Professor", "Penny's Arcade", and "At The Art Museum". Bachelor In Paradise is an even more obscure recording – penned by Henry Mancini for an early 60s Bob Hope comedy, and done with a range of jazzy styles that's every bit in the best Mancini mode – but which also opens up to some of the modder, more swinging modes of the time! The whole thing's wonderfully jazzy – done with a rich, full sound that's great – emotive at times, but always light and playful, and ready to break out into a groovy tune at the drop of a hat! Titles include "Welcome", "Main Title", "Drum Effects/Bachelor In Paradise", "Try It Tonight", and "Top Shelf". Plus, Penelope is presented here with both 18 tracks from the film, plus the 12 that were on the album – plus 6 more bonus cuts too! And Bachelor is featured with 17 tracks from the movie, plus 10 more bonus tracks! The 2CD set features 63 tracks in all – along with amazing notes and images! CD

Being married has never sounded so groovy – thanks to a great score by Johnny Williams! This obscure 1967 film was directed by Gene Kelly, and starred Walter Matthau, Robert Morse, Wally Cox, Joey Bishop, and Jack Benny – a cast that alone will give you a feel for the style of this 60s sex comedy! Williams' score is stuffed with groovy numbers that have a great kitschy 60s sort of feel – slinky sexy strings, romping mod rhythms, and lots of great instrumental flourishes with a jazzy sort of style! The original soundtrack's been greatly expanded here – with a total of 31 cuts, pressed up in a great package with notes on the music, images from the film, and limited to 3000 copies! Titles include "The Bust Up Scene", "Backyard Barbecue", "Smelly Concoction", "The Party", "Trial Run", "Divorcee", and "Second Thoughts". CD
