Black & BrownFile Under Funk ... CD
Irma (Italy), 1995. Used ... $4.99
One of the best groups to come out on Irma during the mid 90's, and a tight Italian ensemble with a classic jazz funk groove. The band is co-led by guitarist Andrea Raffini and keyboard player Goffredo "Picchio" Bagnoli, and the sound is nice and jazzy, with a feel that's similar to classic instrumental LPs on Verve or Milestone from the late 60's. At points, the percussion gets a little more modern, but the groove is always nice and jazzy. 3 cuts have vocals, but the other 13 are instrumental. Tracks include "Tribal Boogaloo", "Afro T", "Manic Samba", "Chinese Jungle", and "We Gotta Party". CD

Cinema Kan (Japan), 1968/2007/2013. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Really nice work from a range of different Japanese TV series – material that spans a relatively large stretch of time, and comes together in a really cool blend of styles! The first two CDs features 51 tracks from the late 60s – mostly shorter cues and musical bits that have all sorts of unusual sonic touches – including some of those unusual uses of instrumentation that you might find in some of the Toho horror/sci-fi work of the time – served up with a mixture of sonic bursts and more melodic elements. CD3 features music that's more modern, and more melodic – but in a really beautiful way – television scoring that's tight and economical, but which really seems to do a lot in a small space – with an especially strong ear for a piano melody. CD4 is also more contemporary, but echoes some of the dramatic elements of the older music – balancing moods over the course of 25 tracks, often with full orchestrations, but occasionally using an approach that's more spare and striking. Sorry to not be able to tell you more, but the notes are all in Japanese – although the package also comes with lots of photos from the shows! CD

Jeff CarneyImperfect Space Journeys (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Audio File/Lion, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
A cassette-only rarity from the glory days of the tape-based new age underground – but a set that's much more strongly in line with 70s masterpieces from the German electronic music pioneers! Jeff Carney plays his instrumentation live here, and in ways that are hardly meditative or relaxing – as the whole thing really takes off into the cosmos with the sorts of sounds that would have made Klaus Schulze or Edgar Froese mighty mighty proud – long-spun tunes that pulsate with all these extended lines on keyboards and organs, used with bits of effects and just a touch of sequencer – all played live, with no overdubs or tapes. Titles include "Toys", "Trip", "Safety Hazard", "Voyage Of The Filters", and "Cloud 9". 2LP set also features bonus tracks – "Earth Escape", "Quark", and "Wailing Wall". LP, Vinyl record album

Yukihiro FukutomiEquality (with bonus tracks) ... CD
File/Pantone (UK), 2004. Used ... $4.99
The best full-length set to date from Yukihiro Fukutomi – a stone solid batch of grooves that's made even better by a list of guest vocalists that include Lady Alma, Rich Medina, Ernesto, and Victor Davies! Fukutomi's really at the top of his game here – working in a warm style of house that shares a heck of a lot with the best sounds coming out of the New York scene at the moment – and which has a richly soulful quality that takes the music way beyond the dancefloor! There's a similar feel here to recent work from Louie Vega, crossed with a bit of the cosmic sense of the London scene – and tracks include "Equality (part 2)", "Peace", "All Over The World", "Cat & Mouse", "Love Is To Blame (Don Carlos contemporary house mix)", "Road To Nowhere", "The Tambour", and "Continuous Function". CD features 14 tracks in all – including bonus tracks "Peace (Dimitri From Paris Backtrackin radio)" and "Equality (Blackbeard radio edit)". CD

Yukihiro FukutomiEquality Remixes ... CD
File (Japan), 2005. Used ... $19.99
One of those great cases where a remix album is almost completely different than the original – thanks to the host of creative talents brought in to handle the set! Yukihiro Fukutomi's original Equality album was certainly one of our standout favorites of 2004 – and the album's got so much power, it's still breaking all over the world at a later date. So leave it to Fukutomi to arrange for a set of new takes on the album's tracks – cast in a way that almost make us feel like we're getting a whole new record, but still retaining enough of the elements of the first to remind us why we liked it so much! Vocals are by Lady Alma, Rich Medina, Isabelle Antena, and Ernesto – and titles include "Equality (Ysst rmx 2005)", "Hooked (Jazztronik rmx)", "Continuous Function (YF's another mix)", "Is It (Breakthrough rmx)", "Peace (Dim's backtrackin rmx)", "Love Is To Blame (contemporary house mix)", and "Peace (Mark De Clive-Lowe rmx)". Barons, Dominoes, Queenettes, & OthersRoots – Rhythm & Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1966. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. ✨✧ Don BlackmanDon Blackman ... CD
Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. Used ... $12.99
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Titles include "You Ain't Hip", "Yabba Dabba Do", "Heart's Desire", "Deaf Hook Up Connection", "Never Miss A Thing", and "Holding You Loving You", and "Since You Been Away So Long". CD

Folkways, 1978. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
The first album from obscure folk singer Guy Davis – a set that's got a much earthier feel than you'd expect from its late 70s release! Most tracks just feature Davis on vocals and acoustic guitar – singing in a style that's slightly blues-inflected in the vocals, but with playful themes that are definitely in the more confident territory of American folk – clearly influenced by some of the folk/soul experiments by others in the early 70s. Titles include "Nappy Hair", "Try To Catch The Colors", "Never Fart In Front Of Company", "Friendly Feet", and "When I'm Gone". CD

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". CD

Langston HughesRhythms Of The World ... CD
Folkways, 1955. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really wonderful record – and one that maybe brings together a few key strands of the Folkways Records magic – as the album features narration by Langston Hughes, based on his First Book Of Rhythms book – layered with sound effects, folk songs, and music from around the world – all put together in this wonderful sonic pastiche! Much as we love Langston's writings, we especially love his voice – and the record is almost like some global folk take on the area that Hughes explored in a jazz vein with Charles Mingus around the same point in his career. The set is one continuous very cool record – narrated by Langston Hughes, but featuring global music as well! There are songs at points, but the whole thing is really one continuous soundpiece, in the best Folkways tradition. CD

Bob Kirkpatrick's got a vibe here that's in the better style of the small club scene of Detroit or Chicago at the time – lean, gritty, and with vocals wrapped around his guitar in a really wonderful way – getting support from a slightly unusual trio that features Jothan Callins on bass, Ron Burton on piano, and Harold White on drums – two of whom you'll know from work in spiritual jazz! Titles include "Watergate Blues", "Sweet Little Angel", "I Don't Know Why", "When The Sun Rose This Morning", "I Been Down So Long", and "I Got Love". CD

Folkways, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A beautiful little record – one that features cascading tones from the strings of the kora, mixed with occasional vocal moments too! The album was recorded in Dakar and Brikama in the mid 70s – and is maybe the start of a great run of later sessions that found a way of taking this amazing instrument to a wider audience – opening up the ringing, many-stringed tones of the kora with fidelity that really lives up to the tonal complexities of well-played performances like these. Some of the songs are quite long, and have a very hypnotic vibe – and titles include "Tutu Jara", "Sutukung Kumbu Sora & Solo", "Darisalami Amad Fal", and "Yeyengo High Life Tune". CD

Montgomery ExpressMontgomery Express Does Party Fever & Other Songs Of The Montgomery Movement ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
A massive lost funk classic – one of those rarer than rare albums that's well worth the fuss! The Montgomery Express were a Florida combo who played on the state's small club circuit – working equally well on their own, or backing up a number of better known singers. The group's got a diversity that's really great – and they're equally well-suited to longer, trippier funk instrumentals, and shorter more soul-based tunes. The vocal numbers are especially haunting, as they've got a moody and sad feel that's more like New Jersey or Detroit group soul of the time than the usual Miami soul – and the funkier tunes have a nice psychedelic approach that uses plenty of sweetly-tuned guitar! 8 tracks in all – "Party Fever", "Precious Wing", "Montgomery Movement", "Gotta Make A Comeback", "Who", "Steal Away", "I'm Standing By", and "Left Me With A Memory". One of the highlights is as speech in which the platform of the Black Panther party is enumerated, with its 10 point program. E Richard Sorenson & Six Boys In TroubleStreet & Gangland Rhythms – Beats & Improvisations By Six Boys In Trouble ... CD
Folkways, 1959. Used ... $6.99
A very unusual record – one that has the Folkways ethnographic team on the streets of New York, recording the songs and calls of "six boys in trouble" as they riff and sing on some rough and raw numbers! The record's an odd turn of the ethnographic ear to the American scene – and in terms of recording style, it's not that different than some of Folkways' percussion albums from Africa and Latin America in the post-war years – especially in the starkness of the recording quality. Most of the music seems to be improvised, and instruments include sticks and bongos – and other tracks feature the boys just singing and shouting, almost in a beat poetry way. Titles include "Bo Diddlie", "One Boy Playing Three Sets Of Bongo Drums With His Hand & One Drum Stick", "Gang Fight", "The Fox", "Money Honey", "I Want Some Food", "Shoe Shine Shakedown", and "Cha Cha Cha". Lilly TchiumbaAngola – Songs Of My People ... CD
Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD

Sweet jazzy soul from Terea – a group who never cracked the big time, but who work here with a vibe that's almost like 70s Rufus at their best! The instrumentation is wonderful – warm, but funky – just the right balance to set the scene perfectly for the lead vocals by Sharon Robinson – a singer who's really great – as equally top-shelf as the players on the session! The record's always been billed as a "tax shelter" project that never succeeded because it was doomed from the start – but thankfully that situation's been remedied by Jazzman's great reissue of the material – finally bringing this soulful treasure back to light. A record you'd be proud to file next to your copies of the Newban and James Mason albums – with cuts that include "Pretty Bird", "Morning Laughter", "For Free", "Manic Depression", "One & Only", and "Try Harder". Brainfeeder, 2015. New Copy 3 CDs ... $26.99 28.98
A modern day spiritual jazz treasure – completely wonderful all the way through, and a set you might well file proudly next to your classics from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders! The record's as epic as it promises in the title – a three volume journey in jazz, headed by tenorist Kamai Washington, who emerges here as a tremendous leader, a hell of a writer, and a rich jazz talent in every sense of the word – carefully steering a group of musicians through work that's searing, searching, and driven with a very cosmic vibe! Tunes are often modal, and never step too far outside, but always push the boundaries – and the instrumentation is a shifting mix of keyboards, piano, trombone, trumpet, bass, drums, and percussion – plus some vocal performances from Dwight Trible and Patrice Quinn. You might know Kamasi from his work with Flying Lotus and Thundercat – the latter of whom plays bass on this set – but the album's very much his own, and very much jazz all the way through. The kind of record we're mighty proud to be offering – with tracks that include "Askim", "The Next Step", "Rhythm Changes", "Miss Understanding", "Leroy & Lanisha", "Re Run", "Seven Prayers", "Malcolm's Theme", and "The Message". The whole thing's a great shift from the usual for the duo – who manage to evoke some deeper colors here, while still staying very far from conventional soundtrack material – a bit less of the sense of doom that sometimes graces their scoring, but still a gentle sort of majesty overall. Nothing primitif about this jazz, because the music has a really haunting feel – one that's filled with sophisticated changes and compelling instrumentation – served up in ways that are unlike anything else we can think of! Side one of the record features the combo of percussionist Rupert Clemendore, who also plays vibes on the record – with Bert Innis on piano, Frankie Francis on sax, and Les Sargeant on guitar – all in a set of tunes that skittishly groove on angular rhythms, yet also have a sense of warmth as well. Titles include "Bongo Mood", "We Mambo", "Princess Charming", and "The Fly". Side two features equally amazing music from the group of bassist John Buddy Williams – a combo with lots of heavy percussion and a definite Latin bent in the rhythms, plus "doublers" who play either sax or clarinet at the same time – making for a really wide, spread-apart sound as they snake through the melodies! Instrumentation includes a guitar with a metal file, making tape and steel ball bearings, and lots of odd, unusual, pre-industrial sounds! A baroque instrumental masterpiece from Jean Claude Vannier – Serge Gainsbourg's right hand man at the start of the 70s, and a key figure in the legendary Histoire De Melody Nelson album! The feel here is very much along the lines of work that Serge was doing at the time – larger orchestrations mixed with smaller instrumentation – in a level that's often funky, always baroque, and very much in the best Sexopolis styles of the French pop scene of the time! There's a marked similarity here to some of the work of Michel Colombier – but unlike Colombier, and Gainsbourg, there's no vocals at all on these tracks – and the main genius is carried by Vannier's incredibly arranged strings, rolling rhythms, fuzzy guitars, and dark little soundtrack-styled groove! Some tracks are wonderfully funky, others are moody and tripped-out – and the whole thing's a masterpiece that we'd file right up there with our favorite French work of the time! Cook, Mid 50s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great work from the legendary Cook label – a full album that combines two earlier 10" albums of experimental sounds! First up is Speed The Parting Guest, a wonderful combination of music and sound effects – very similar to some of the bigger label work from artists like Jack Fascinato or Dean Elliott over at Capitol Records in the late 50s, but an even more sonically-sensitive session done for the smaller Cook imprint! Jimmy Carroll leads an assortment of vibes, bells, harps, toys, percussion, and other odd instruments – all in a weird and playful mix of melodies that almost come across like mini-cartoons in sound! There's not much in the way of larger or conventional instrumentation – which makes Jimmy's work even different than bigger label experiments like this – and the recording quality from Cook really makes all the odd sounds come through with great clarity! Titles include "Happy Little Woodpile", "Tinkle Tinkle Little Bell", "Speed The Parting Guest", and "Hong Kong Local". Next up is The Hot Tempered Clavichord – a session that features mostly clavichord musings from Red Camp – more of a rootsy pianist on other records, but working here on an electrified clavichord – which is a bit like an electric harpsichord in sound, only rougher! The tracks are these cool electric boogie-woogie numbers – and include "Ragout", "Blues In Minore", and "The One I Love". CD

✨✧ East New York Ensemble De MusicAt The Helm ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. There's a nice Eastern feel to some of the tracks, and titles include "Mevlana", "Ti Ti", "Sun Flower", and "Bent El Jerusalem". CD

Folkways, 1959. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tony Schwartz must have been one of the coolest cats working on the New York scene in the 50s – not a musician, or a singer – but instead a sound artist whose legacy was dedicated to documenting the city in a very poetic way! This album may well be Tony's masterpiece – a long tone poem love letter to New York – narrated by Tony, but filled with sounds that he captured on his travels around the city – people, ships, machines, animals, vehicles, and lots lots more – all with a keen ear for the vibrancy of the New York story at its best – the kind of true promise the city has to offer, captured here in an array of actual sounds from the postwar years! A really unusual music from the duo of Jaribu and Ngoma Hill – a pair who work together here in a mode that's partly the acoustic blues of the rural scene in the south, but fused with more urban elements too – including a bit of gospel spirit, and folk-inspired righteousness! As you might guess from their name, these guys have a fair bit of message in their music – delivered maybe with even more power in this setting than if they had a larger group behind them – as the duo vocals and acoustic guitar seem to be more than enough to get the meaning across! Titles include "High Rise Tenements", "Where Is The Justice", "The No Nuke Song", "Registration", "White Power Dreams", and "Undocumented". CD

Baby Grand/Jazzman (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A haunting batch of commercial music from the 70s – billed in the notes to Bosworth Ensembles, which makes us almost think that the work's from the Bosworth Sound Library – even though the record was issued in the US by Folkways! Most of the music here is relatively gentle – seductive 70s themes played on piano, keyboards, guitar, and other light instrumentation – the kind of tunes that must have been beautiful slinking behind the products featured in the TV ads – which include Zenith TVs, Buick station wagons, Dannon yogurt, and Revlon perfumes! Composers are listed as T Kinsey, J Pearson, V Flick, B Ebbinghouse, and K Palmer – all names that might be Brit Easy composers – and titles include "Guitarama", "Walking On Velvet", "Theme For Two Lovers", "Pastorella", "Fleeting Clouds", "Devil's Delight", "Apollo 15", and "Slow Glow". Folkways, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A seminal set of righteous underground poetry – a key bridge between the earlier work of Langston Hughes and some of the bigger spoken sides of the 70s by artists like Gil Scott-Heron or Wanda Robinson! As the title promises, there's a definite undercurrent of jazz in the work – but mostly in the subject matter of the poems, or in the riffing way the readers approach the material – since there's really no instrumentation at all to accompany the voices. There's a few names on here that you might recognize, but there's a lot more that you won't – and that makes the album a key look at this under-documented 60s scene. Titles include "Elvin Jones Gretch Freak" by David Henderson, "The Jackal Headed Cowboy" by Ishmael Reed, "Poem To Americans" by Gerald Jackson, "Poem To Ernie Henry" by Gloria Tropp, "Listening To Sonny Rollins at the 5 Spot" by Paul Blackburn, "African Memories" by Joel Oppenheimer, and "Autumn 1964" by Peter LaFarge. A legendary industrial project from the New York scene – a group that features artist Jean Michel Basquiat on vocals – plus Michael Holman and Nick Taylor on vocals, keyboards, and a lot of processing and effects! Instrumentation includes a guitar with a metal file, making tape and steel ball bearings, and lots of odd, unusual, pre-industrial sounds! There's occasional moments of found sound samples, blended with the other elements at a level that's almost more UK post-punk, but with the occasional old school hip hop sensibility – all as dark and moody as the group's name, and surprisingly strong after all these years. The record was so much a genre-crossing effort it was a bit lost at the time, but has since gone on to be the stuff of legend – and titles include "The Man Who", "Gauntlet Of Wrigglys", "Eight Hour Religion", "Figure It Out For Yourself", and "The Mysterious Ashley Bickerton". A vivid audio document of New York City in the late 50s – put together by creative sound recorder Tony Schwartz! The set's one of a few amazing albums put together by Schwartz – who spent a lot of time on the streets with his microphones and recorder, then really got creative putting the whole thing together in the studio – so that there's some good structure, and almost a sense of narrative to the record – yet in a way that also preserves all of the vivid, spontaneous aspects of the "on the street" recordings. Schwartz narrates a bit, includes some interviews, background sounds from certain areas of the city, and a range of performances in styles that run from jazz to folk to gospel and beyond! CD

Nothing too dirty about this jazz – especially considering that the "south" in the title is actually the Caribbean – an overlooked hotbed of creative improvisational activity! The album's similar to some of the other Caribbean jazz recorded by Cook Records at the time – highly rhythmic, with a somewhat exotic feel – but the music here is also a bit more conventionally jazz-based at times, with echoes of older swing and trad modes mixed in with rougher percussion on the bottom. There's some great sax parts at times – nice and snakey – and titles include "Serenade", "Kiss Me In the Country", and "Mme Kilio" by Cyril Diaz; "Vicki" and "Cook's Cooking" by Johnny Gomez, "My Salty Sin" and "Choro" by John Buddy Williams, "All Of Me" by Conrad Jones, and "Jungle Blues" by Lorna Pierre. Composers include Myron Schaffer, Arnold Walter, Harvey Olnick, and Hugh Le Caine – all working in weird tones and sounds that remind us a lot of the best early work of Pierre Henry. Fantastic stuff – and a beautiful album of modal grooves that really deserves wider recognition! Horn plays alto and flute in a groovy west coast quintet with Emil Richards on vibes and Paul Moer on piano – and the overall feel is very similar to his stellar Something Blue album on the HiFi label. Tracks begin with some tight bass and drum workouts, then the piano of Moers sets down lines that let horn and Richards groove over the top. Wonderful stuff – with only a hint of Horn's later hippy-dippy work, and some great tight jazz soloing. Titles include "Fun Time", "Now Hear This", "Abstraction", and "Straight Ahead". Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A cool 70s album from the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one that has John Lewis playing a bit of electric piano, in addition to his usual acoustic keys! At some level, it almost feels like the group's working off the lessons learned during their Apple Records years – and are also picking up some elements of Milt Jackson's work on other projects in the late 60s – as the record has a soulful groove you might not normally expect from the MJQ, and less of the more academic tones that had marked some of their earlier 60s recordings for Atlantic. Tunes are really nicely focused, but still have that strong sense of space and sound that's the Lewis' hallmark – and Jackson's nicely-pointed vibes sound really great next to Lewis' keys, whether acoustic or electric. Zero/Super Fuji Discs (Japan), 1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
A record that's about as lovely as you might guess from the title and the cover – work recorded by a female Japanese singer in the early 80s, who also accompanies herself on accordion! Yet as French as the presentation might appear, the sound here is quite different overall – maybe in part because of the Japanese language of the lyrics, which necessarily entails a different sort of phrasing – but also because Kumyko Suyama has a voice that's full of trills and waves of gentle expression – maybe not what you'd expect from the start. The voice is often the lead element in the music, but there's also bits of bass, drums, and mandolin from time to time – and Suyama also adds in a few other instruments herself. Most titles are in Japanese – and the album's divided into a "Face Du Soleil" and "Face De La Lune". CD also features 5 bonus tracks from a 7" ep and a flexidisc. CD

The best yet from Foreign Exchange! FE began as a transatlantic collaboration between rapper/singer Phone in NC and producer Nicolay in Holland – who literally got it done by exchanging files online – but since Nicolay moved closer, they've grown into one of finest indie soul acts in the US! They're much more than duo, too – co-running their own label and serving as a linchpin of a soul scene that includes Zo!, Sy Smith, Jeanne Jolly and others. As a project, FE is more community-based than ever! Their roots as a leftfield hip hop soul project are still healthy, with crisp, easygoing beats and occasional rhymes by Phonte – but Phonte has grown more confident as a singer over the years, and that continues stronger than ever. Nicolay's pedigree as a multi-instrumentalist and spacey soul producer has also grown nicely! Love In Flying Colors features the above mentioned guests, plus Carmen Rodgers, Carlitta Durand, Gwen Bunn, Eric Roberson and others. Includes "If I Knew Then" with Carmen Rodgers, "Right After Midnight" with Sy Smith, "Better" with Shana Tucker & Eric Roberson, "On A Day Like Today", "Listen To The Rain", "Call It Home", "The Moment", "Can't Turn Around" wih Gwen Bunn, "Dreams Are Made For Two" with Carlitta Durand and "When I Feel Love". Lowell FulsomSoul (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Kent/P-Vine (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $22.99
The title gets it right here – as the album's as much a soul effort as a blues one – and is a nice change from the sound of Lowell's earlier years! There's still plenty of grit in the grooves here – and even with the front cover proclamation, the album's still one that's best filed in the blues racks – but the album does show a great mixing of modes that was common for some of the west coast releases on the Kent label at the time – the kind of south LA blend of sounds from the east mingled with the 60s changes going on in its own community. Lowell's vocals have a hard-bitten edge that's totally great, and instrumentation includes some heavy piano and guitar, plus some of the heavier rhythms that point towards his famous Tramp sound to come. The album has a pretty nice soulful feel – a bit rootsy, but also with some urban electric touches that go nicely with Lowell's vocals – and titles include "Shattered Dreams", "Talkin Woman", "Black Nights", "Sittin Here Thinkin", "Every Time It Rains", and "My Aching Back". ✨✧ Junior ManceBig Chief! (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Jazzland (Japan), 1961. Used ... $19.99
Junior's the Big Chief on this one – coming down hard and soulfully on the keys, in a style that's sprightly, yet which also matches the more soul-drenched styles of some of his early 60s contemporaries! The backing is surprisingly sensitive at times – with contemplative bass from Jimmy Rowser, and soft-then-hard drums from Paul Gusman – a great player who really makes this set sparkle nicely. And Junior's work on the keys is pretty darn great too – freed from some of the cliches that might creep into a session like this, and really matching the sensitivity of the rhythm on the best numbers. Titles include "Swish", "Filet Of Soul", "The Seasons", "Big Chief", "Summertime", and "Little Miss Gail". CD

Lloyd MillerJazz At The University Of Utah (with insert and download) ... LP
East West/Now Again, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
An astonishingly rare treasure by exotic jazz genius Lloyd Miller – originally issued by East West Records in a run of just a few hundred copies! Recorded at The University Of Utah, it's a wonderful synthesis of the eastern and otherwise globally-inspired instrumentation Miller is beloved for, and the western jazz styles of his earlier years playing behind Don Ellis, Eddie Harris & others. Recorded with players from the university's jazz ensembles, along with several numbers with the Mike Johnson Quartet, it came a time when Miller was becoming so well educated in Far Eastern, Middle Eastern and Asian music and culture, and was already such a seasoned American jazz player himself, it's really stunning this set is such a rare one! Amazing stuff from a late 60s period when he was really starting to cement his legend. Includes "Amber Eyes (Guzel Gozler)", "Yona", "Natanie", "Blue Rue", "Sixty Years Of Jazz", "Gol-E Gandom", "Hue Wail", "Sakura", "Impressions Of Bhairavi Raga" and "Midsummer Moon". LP, Vinyl record album

Charles MingusJazz In Detroit – Strata Concert Gallery (5CD set) ... CD
Strata/BBE (UK), 1973. New Copy 5 CDs ... $39.99
A fantastic live performance from Charles Mingus – recorded in Detroit, with a slightly unusual group – and done with the more open, freewheeling quality that grace his live recordings of the early 60s! The set was recorded at the Strata Gallery – and has some of the deeper spiritual currents of the work on Detroit's Strata label – as the quintet burns beautifully with contributions from Don Pullen on piano, John Stubblefield on tenor, Joe Gardner on trumpet, and the great Roy Brooks on drums! It's interesting both to hear Mingus without Dannie Richmond on drums – and Brooks at a time when he was at his most righteous – and the pairing really seems to bring a lot of the best energy out of the other players too. The super-expanded set features material from a few nights of performance, with a few alternate takes – and titles include "The Man Who Never Sleeps", "Pithecanthropus Erectus", "Peggy's Blue Skylight", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress Then Blue Silk", "Dizzy Profile", and "C Jam Blues". ✨✧ Charles MingusPithecanthropus Erectus (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Atlantic (Japan), 1957. New Copy (reissue)... About February 1, 2021
An amazing record – quite possibly one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, and a session that has Charles Mingus stepping boldly forward in a whole new direction! The album shakes loose the sometimes too-academic modern tones of Mingus albums from the previous year or two – and unleashes the bold, raw emotion that would drive him firmly into the 60s – a new sense of freedom in music, filled with poetry, anger, joy, and life! The tracks are all quite long – and played by a sharp quintet with Mingus on bass, Jackie McLean on alto sax, JR Monterose on tenor, Mal Waldron on piano, and Willie Jones on drums. Titles include "Pithecantrhopus Erectus", "A Foggy Day", "Love Chant", and "Profile of Jackie". The whole thing bubbles over with an anger and intensity that you hardly find in other Mingus albums, and if you've ever heard a weak Mingus album, and wondered what all the fuss was about, you owe it to yourself to own this one! We promise that it will never ever let you down. LP, Vinyl record album

Wick/Daptone, 2018. Used ... $8.99
Buzzing and sunny power pop on a level that's rarely reached post-millennium! Michael Rault wouldn't only be filed so close to the Raspberries in your record collections because of the Ra-, he's a genuine torch carrier for sounds pioneered by bands of that ilk – a mix of sweetness and grit with tuneful songs, bright vocals, fuzzy guitars and rhythms. Recorded at Daptone's House Of Soul in Brooklyn, it's pretty wonderful how the old school mojo that imbues funk & soul records made there works its way onto sunny psych/power, too – but all credit to Rault's voice and songcraft! Includes "I'll Be There", "New Day Tonight", "Sleep With Me", "Oh, Clever Boy", "Sitting Still", "Dream Song", "Pyramid Scheme", "Out Of The Light", "Sleeping And Smiling" and "When The Sun Shines". This might not be the most important or vital album in the history of hip hop – but it's got some indistibutable, unstoppable party jams all the same! "It Takes Two" will always be guaranteed to rock any party – and if Rob Base on the mic isn't anything to write home about, at the time Profile dropped this album, even the Jimmy Castor, ESG and James Brown samples weren't totally played out – and still sound great today. Given the sort of tracks that pollute the radio airwaves under the guise of hip hop these days, this is a respectable, if commercial rap album. 10 tracks in all, also includes the hit "Joy & Pain", plus "Make It Hot", "Check This Out" and "Get On The Dance Floor". The classic self-titled debut LP from Run-DMC – one that not only changed hip hop, but much of modern pop and rock forever! There's little we can add to the canon for this record, but the way Run-DMC ushered in a new era in contemporary urban culture, a harder hitting style of rap that managed to bust out of the inner cities and into consciousness of an entire generation, was unforeseen and never to be duplicated to say the least. You can literally call this album revolutionary without sounding heavy handed, it's something very few artists can ever hope to achieve. Amazing! ✨✧ Lonnie SmithAfro-desia/Keep On Lovin' ... CD
Groove Merchant/Connoisseur Collection (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great set that features 2 mid 70s jazz funk albums by organist Lonnie Smith! Afro-desia is a stone jammer – a fantastic album by Lonnie, and one of the freest flowing albums he ever did. The funk groove's dropped out on this one, and it's replaced by a soaring Larry Young-ish style of playing, which Lonnie carries off to perfection. A young Joe Lovano plays excellently here, and the cuts include "Afrodesia", "Spirits Free", and "The Awakening". Keep On Lovin was recorded with a smoother 70s funk sound – one that features more electric keyboards over organ on a few tracks. Lonnie's playing in front of a large-ish band with a good studio sound, and the set includes the groovers "Sizzle Stick", "What I Want", "Keep On Lovin", "Lean Meat", and "Filet O Sole". CD

Nuff Said is another one that's among their last albums together, and it's very much in the hit Ike & Tina style! Lots of hard heavy guitar, pounding drums, and raw heavy soul vocals from Tina. City Files, 2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful combination of words and image – as the poetry of Patricia Smith is combined with vintage 70s photographs by Michael Abramson – the same sort of material that was featured in the Light On The Southside book/album from the Numero Group! This presentation is quite different than that one, though – as Abramson's images from Chicago nightclubs are presented on stark full pages, often with Smith's words as a sidebar – as if she's writing lyrics to his music, in a collaboration that comes off beautifully. As with Light On The Southside, the photographs here were taken at Chicago clubs that include Pepper's Hideout, Perv's House, and The High Chapparal – but they seem nicely different here, and include a number of images that were not in that book. 190 pages, hardcover, and filled with striking images and black and white. JG/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1971. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very rare, very obscure material from this important free jazz trio of the German scene in the 70s – a set that features one long performance originally issued on the JG label, despite the FMP-like image on the cover – plus two more tracks from the same year that appear here for the first time ever! "Just For Altena" offers up the power trio at their best – very freewheeling piano from Fred Van Hove, drums from Han Bennink, and tenor from Peter Brotzmann – with intensity that may well surpass the Machine Gun years, and an understanding of each players strengths that means that there's almost no tentative moments at all in the improvisation! "Filet Americain" and "ICP No 17" are from earlier in 1971 – and showcase a different, more sonic side of the trio – some tones that are at the farther end of hearing, which ruminate then blossom into bolder statements, but still often with a very abstracted approach to each instrument. Great stuff – and every bit as essential as any of the better-known Brotzman recordings of the time! CD

The massive third album from Run DMC – made at the top of their game – an pivotal effort that brought them to peak popularity and helped break hip hop in a huge way in the pop culture landscape! Part of the album's strength is its guitar-heavy sound on some of the grooves – produced by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons with a classic early Def Jam vibe, in the same manner that helped the Beastie Boys get their records in the hands of folks who'd never buy hip hop otherwise! That sound comes to culmination on the album's hit collaboration with Aerosmith on a remake of "Walk This Way", resulting in the commercial breakthrough, but the real triumph here is the increased complexity in both the lyricism, and the way Jam Master Jay serves up their beats – which makes for a stone classic all the way through, on tracks that include "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas", "Proud To Be Black", "You Be Illin'", and more. A much-needed look at an overlooked side of the genius of Quincy Jones – not his jazz work, not his productions for famous soul artists, but instead his huge legacy of soundtrack material – a part of Q's career that really took off in the 60s! By the time he started working in films, Jones had already had a decade under his belt as one of the hippest arrangers, leaders, and composers in jazz – and the film business really respected those talents, and allowed Quincy to bring some really fresh styles into play – modes that really opened up the vibe of American cinema, and also paved the way for the funky styles of the 70s! As that decade approached, Jones left behind the cinema to take on some more higher-profile records of his own – but all the charms of those great albums can be found here at their roots – in this stunning collection of soundtrack material, some of which has never been on CD. The package is way more than just a sampler – and includes an album's worth of material from the films The Pawnbroker, Slender Thread, Mirage, The Deadly Affair, In The Heat Of The Night, In Cold Blood, Walk Don't Run, The Italian Job, Lost Man, and John & Mary – plus two versions of the love theme from The Getaway, and a bonus CD with 18 tracks – titled Q's highlights, and featuring tracks from his Mercury records – plus more by Billy Preston, Arthur Prysock, Bill Cosby, Shirley Horn, Letta Mbulu, Toots Thielemans, and others.
