Fat Jon SextetHonesty – The Unreleased 1963 Studio Session ... CD
Turtle (UK), 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
The group's name is a bit hokey, but they've got an excellent lineup that includes a few musicians who'd go on to greater fame in the British jazz scene of the late 60s – working here in a nicely balanced mode of modern styles first forged in the 50s! There's a mix of west coast cool and east coast chamber jazz at times – but the tracks here are all long, which gives plenty of solo space to the individual musicians, instead of having them lost in the arrangements – a good thing, too – given that the group features Chris Pyne on trombone, Ray Warleigh on alto and flute, Tony Roberts on tenor and bass clarinet, Peter Lemer on piano, Danny Thompson on bass, and John Cox on drums. None of the music here was issued at the time – and there's more than enough for two full albums, plus a few bonus live tracks recorded the year before – titles that include "Sister Sadie", "How Can You Lose", "The Theme", "Toccata", "Watermelon Man", "Whisper Not", "Jubilation", "Blues For Snorty", "Ghana", "Chicken N Dumplings", and "Fictive".
