✨✧ Okuden Quartet (Walerian/Shipp/Parker/Drake)Every Dog Has Its Day But It Doesn't Matter Because Fat Cat Is Getting Fatter ... CD
ESP, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
That's Mat Walerian on the cover, looking all nice and spooky – but the group has a very down-to-earth, familiar trio at the core – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion – players who really give the album a lot of well-grounded spirit! Walerian plays alto, bass clarinet, soprano clarinet, and flute – sometimes in contrast to the mood of the others, especially Parker and Shipp, who have this fantastic way of revolving around each other in sonic space! The set is full of great moments and wonderful surprises – well worth the double length accorded to the album – and titles include "Magic World", "Thelonious Forever", Sir Denis", "Business With William", "Lesson II", and "Forest Council". ✨✧ Allen ToussaintEverything I Do Gonh Be Funky – The Hit Songs & Productions 1957 to 1978 ... CD
Charly (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully overstuffed collection of early work from New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a set that not only includes many of his key recordings from the scene in the 60s, but also some of his important productions for other artists too! The package begins with Toussaint in the lead on a series of sides on CD one – working either as himself, or as Al Touson, or with The Stones, The Rubyiats, or Allen & Allen – all with these choppy, loping, heavy-grooving rhythms that were Toussaint's huge contribution to New Orleans soul right from the start! Titles include "Whirlaway", "Whipped Cream", "Moo Moo", "Wham Tousan", "Omar Khayyam", "I Don't Need One", "Baby Do Liddle", "Tomorrow", "Fat Cat", "Banana Split", and "Java". CD2 features a series of recordings done for the Minit, Instant, and Sansu labels – all with Toussaint involved either as producer, arranger, or musician – on material that forever shaped the sound of New Orleans – titles that include "A Certain Girl" by Ernie K Doe, "Over You" by Aaron Neville, "I Like It Like That (parts 1 & 2)" by Chris Kenner, "Sophisticated Cissy" by The Meters, "Holy Cow" by Lee Dorsey, "I'm Evil Tonight" by Betty Harris, "Oogsey Moo" by Jessie Hill, "It Will Stand" by The Showmen, "Ruler Of My Heart" by Irma Thomas, "Fortune Teller" by Benny Spellman, and "Hot Tamales (parts 1 & 2)" by The Primemates. 50 tracks in all! ✨✧ Willie MitchellWillie Mitchell's Driving Beat ... LP
Hi Records/Fat Possum, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A killer from Willie Mitchell – harder, funkier, and a lot more soulful than most of his other records from the 60s! The groove here is sock-soul, and most cuts have a hard and tight funky 45 approach. Willie was really cut loose on this one – freed from his usual standard of recording hits and pop songs, he wrote all the songs on the set – and they're heavy Memphis instrumentals with a sound that's much more like 60s Bar Kays work on Stax! There's a great sax player on the session, too – not named in the notes, unfortunately, but with a sound that really wails on the best tracks. Titles include "Fat Cat", "Pep Talk", "That Driving Beat", "The Champion (parts 1 & 2)", "Nick O Demus", "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright", and "Stone Face". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dele SosimiTurbulent Times ... CD
Ekostar (UK), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible set of new Afro Funk work – very much in the best style of current groups, like Antibalas or the Afro Kings – and served up in a very classic style! Dele plays keyboards and sings lead vocals – but the album burns with the strength of the entire ensemble, a tightly-knit outfit that play with the energy and abandon of Afrika 70! Tracks are all nice and long, with lots of jazzy inflections on the instrumentation – and Dele's got a compelling style that holds the whole thing together nicely as the tracks groove along! Titles include "Turbulent Times", "Gbedu 1", "Big Cat Fat Cat", "Di Godfada", "I No Like", and "Phaze 2". CD

BBE (UK), Late 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
An excellent collection of Neo Soul gems – the kind of standout cuts that have made the movement such an important part of modern music over the past 20 years – a continuing evolution of classic soul styles, at a level you'll never find in the chartbound mainstream! These aren't artists who emerged from some competitive TV show, or who were picked by fat cats high up at the major labels – these are singers and producers who've worked their way up from the roots, and who make the kind of rock-solid music that will always get our ears and attention here at Dusty Groove. Titles include "Come Over" by Etta Bond, "Gave My Heart/It's So Interlood" by Omar with Leon Ware, "Shelter" and "Come Around" by Foreign Exchange, "Need Somebody" by KOF with Terri Walker, "Push On" and "Slow Down" by Children Of Zeus, "Slow Down" by Moods with Damon Trueitt, "Someone Is You (Shawn's revenge)" by Darien Dean & Avery Sunshine, "Lose Twice" by Terri Walker with Floacist, "Find That Love Again" by Phonte with Eric Roberson, and "For Da Love Of Da Game (DJ Jazzy Jeff rmx)" by DJ Jazzy Jeff with Raheem, V, & Erro. Silvano D'AuriaLa Mano Lunga Del Padrino (Long Arm Of The Godfather) (with bonus CD) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $29.99
This Godfather's got a mighty long arm – and a mighty groovy sound, too – one that includes some great leaping rhythms bubbling up with basslines, and plenty of fantastic vocals from both Edda Ell'Orso and I Cantori Modern! Edda sings in that wordless breezy style she brought to some of her best Ennio Morricone soundtracks – and I Cantori Modern often scat along in a cool harmony-drenched style that's pretty wonderful too – and instrumentation includes a bit of light flute, sweet Hammond, and fuzzy guitar – in a very nice blend that only gets stronger on the mostly instrumental tracks that dominate the second half of the record! Titles include "Raffica", "Fuga In La Minore", "Sabina", "Streap", and "Porto Cammelli". LP, Vinyl record album

John DankworthFathom ... LP
20th Century, 1967. Sealed ... $44.99
A sexy action film from the 60s – one that features the legendary Raquel Welch in the lead, and some very slinky grooves on the soundtrack to match! John Dankworth handled the score here, and he's mixing in some sultry soundtrack elements to his usual jazzy style – a combination that's orchestrated beautifully by David Lindup for the recording, in ways that almost echo some of his own great sound library work. Some numbers have cool wordless vocals, scatting along with the rhythms – which themselves are often a bit bossa-based – and others are more instrumental, and orchestral – using some warmer, romantic elements that are quite nice. There's plenty of the Dankworth sense of drama in the mix – and titles include "Bossa Palma Nova", "Fathom's Theme", "The Merriwether Affair", "Happy Landings", "Vacation Chase", and "Chorale To A Scuba-Diver". ✨✧ Von FreemanDedicated To You ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1993. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Von Freeman blows it bold and beautifully here – with just the right sort of sound we first fell in love with when seeing him in small club gigs in Chicago! There's an easygoing soulfulness to Freeman that grabs us right away – but there's also an edge, too – a quality that marks his lineage on a tenor scene that goes back to Johnny Griffin and John Gilmore – and the days when you could play things straight, but still always be inventing as well – never needing to go to the farther reaches, just always working out new feelings, new emotions on the familiar canvas of tunes that gave you plenty of solo space. Of Freeman's few studio recordings, this is one that really gets the sound of his soul just right – that tender feeling and slightly offbeat edge that always made us sit up and take notice. Rhythm is from the comfortable trio of Jodie Christian on piano, Eddie DeHaas on bass, and Wilbur Campbell on drums – and titles include "Four", "There Goes My Heart", "Song For My Father", "There Is No Greater Love", "Dedicated To You", and "My Foolish Heart". BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
A far reaching mix of material put together by Henrik Schwarz/Ame/Dixon – from the minimalist electronic experimentalists, to hypnotic film score bits, to sparsely furnished house and club sounds of more recent years – a deeply diverse tapestry of beats and sounds from the past 50 years! The compilers do an impeccable job of programming the selections here to communicate just how deeply indebted modern club tracks are to the masters of avant garde minimalism – largely by working those kind of tunes into the tracklist – and it works way better than we thought after simply reading the selections! The 2CD version features a mixed set plus an unmixed disc much of the same material and some alternate titles. Titles include "Electric Counterpoint-Fast (Movement 3)" by Steve Reich & Pat Metheny, "Lock Groove (Out)" by Liquid Liquid, "Acid Beatless" by I:Cube, "Motor Bass Gets Phunked" by La Funk Mob, "The Three Faces Of Bala" by Yusef Lateef, "The President Is Gone" by John Carpenter, "Invocation" by Moondog, "Bass-Line Generator" by Raymond Scott, "Sunday Jam" by Can and more. An incredible record – the kind of album that only Blue Note could put out, and an instant classic that will sound wonderful forever! The album's truly one of the great ones – one of those Blue Notes that still makes you stop and pause when you hear it, even though you've heard it a million times in Starbucks and places like that. Horace Silver is working here at the height of his powers – lyrical, free, yet also damn soulful, in a style that makes for some of the most evocative jazz-based grooves cut to wax at the time. Carmell Jones is in the group, and plays some of his best trumpet ever – and Joe Henderson really drives the whole session home with some incredible tenor work. Other group members include Teddy Smith on bass and Roger Humphries on drums – and titles include the instantly famous "Song For My Father", plus "Que Pasa", "The Kicker", and "Calcutta Cutie". ✨✧ Shigeo MaruyamaYoung Father's Song – 20 Musicians For A Singer ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool set of vocal jazz from early 80s Japan – done in a mode that borrows heavily from the Mark Murphy sound of the Muse years, and which like that work, effortlessly mixes together straight, soulful, and Brazilian-tinged jazz modes! We'll be honest in saying that we didn't know Shigeo at all before hearing this record – and he's not only a great singer with a hip 70s sort of approach, but also quite a great songwriter as well, responsible for all the best breezy tunes on this set! Backing is live by a small combo that's occasionally augmented by horns – and lyrics are in English, and often augmented by some warmly scatting riffs that are especially great. Titles include "I Sing Samba", "A Young Father's Song/Song For My Two Sons", "Spring Bargain", "Malaika", and "Taro The Cat". CD

An early 80s look at Latin jazz from David Amram – with a who's who of Latin jazz players and stellar jazz musicians of other realms – including Paquito D'Riveria, Candido, Machito & Machito Jr, Brazilian percussion guru Duduca Fonseca, David Fathead Newman, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams and others others! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Includes "En Memoria De Chano Pozo, "New York Charanga", "Brazilian Memories", "Celebration", "Song Of The Rainforest" and more. CD

John CorbettBullets For Dead Hoods – An Encyclopedia Of Chicago Mobsters Circa 1933 ... Book
Soberscove, 2020. New Copy ... $31.99 38.99
One of the most unique books we've ever gotten from John Corbett – an author who's given us some fantastic music writing over the years! This book is completely different – not written, but "salvaged" – as the contents are a lost manuscript from the early 30s – one that offers up a rundown of 140 different figures in the Chicago mob – some famous, some obscure – all written in this sharp style that's very to the point! The anonymous author offers no judgement in most cases, but provides a surprising amount of detail on each figure – from territory covered, to methods, to some of their important crimes – and their fates, if they ended up dead or in jail. The original manuscript is reproduced here exactly as it was found in a Chicago junk shop by Corbett – yellowed, brittle pages, each given a large page reproduction, with original typeface and typos – which makes it feel like you're handling the whole thing yourself. Corbett provides an introduction to the material – and then at the end, the book has some very cool features – a collection of all the locations referenced in the pages, 400 in all, most of which are presented on a pull-out map of Chicago that comes with the book! 232 pages, softcover, in full color. Jerry GranelliJerry Granelli Trio Plays Vince Guaraldi & Mose Allison ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Drummer Jerry Granelli takes on two of our favorite piano talents of the 60s – working here with a great trio that features Jamie Saft on the acoustic keys and Bradley Christopher Jones on bass – all three working together on nicely different takes on the material! If you know both Mose and Vince, you'll know the sorts of material that you'll find within – lyrical and groovy Guaraldi tunes, and soul-drenched Allison numbers – but the approach of the combo is nicely different, and Saft does an especially nice job of making the tracks swing while also bringing plenty of his unique flavorings into play – maybe given a bit more of a groove than we might have expected, thanks to very strong work from Jones on bass. Titles include "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Star Song", "Young Man Blues", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Parchman Farm", "Your Mind Is On Vacation", and "Christmas Time Is Here". CD

Singer Greg Hester pays tribute to the late Godfather – and does so in a nice way that moves things past the usual! There's definitely plenty of funk in the music – and the band also includes some of James' old bandmates too – but Greg's got a nice blue-eyed soul approach, maybe a bit like Van Morrison at times – which makes for a record that's very much his own, rather than a slavish copycat of the legend. Fred Wesley plays plenty of strong trombone leads on the record – and the set also features guest appearances from Ivan Neville, Shana Morrison, Col Bruce Hampton, Caroline Aiken, Jimmy Hall, and others. One of the greatest crossover albums of the 80s – and the record that catapulted Prince very firmly into the mainstream! There's a tightness here that surpasses even that of Prince's early classics for Warner Brothers – an unabashed love of a pop hook that makes for some incredibly catchy tunes that are still delivered with a nice funky undercurrent. The whole Prince family is at the top of their game at this point – and titles include "Darling Nikki", "Let's Go Crazy", "I Would Die 4 U", "When Doves Cry", "Baby I'm A Star", and "Purple Rain". ✨✧ San Ul Lim3 ... CD
World Psychedelia (Korea), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $3.99
Super fuzzed out, trippy 70s psych rock from Korea's San Ul Lim – an album recorded by the Seoul rockers in the power trio format of guitar, bass and drums – but with such a fuzzy, dense tone that it's hard to fathom how on Earth they got the sound! The opening track starts in wonderfully eye-opening fashion with the buzzing guitar sound and raspy vocals – but the follow up tracks have a softer vocal tone and more of a spacey effect – kind of evocative of "Sister Ray" in the relentless buzz sounds, but with a more lilting overall vibe! Includes notes in English, but the titles are Korean – 5 tracks in all, including a mammoth 18 minute closer! (Apologies for the lack of track titles – the booklet includes an English language essay, but not a translation for the song titles!) CD

In fact, there's a rawness here that you won't always find on Wright's other records – great live backing from a cool combo of American players, really rich in Memphis soul elements – and served up with funky touches that really work wonders with OV's presentation of the music. So instead of being a throw-off record for the overseas market, the set's instead a key piece of Wright's catalog at the time – seminal work that really stands strongly next to his studio classics. VariousCiao Bella – Italian Girl Singers Of The 60s ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Great groovy pop from the Italian scene of the 60s – a wealth of rare singles from female singers, almost all of whom we've never heard before! We'll confess to a long love and deep knowledge of female French singers from the time – but also admit a strong ignorance about most Italian pop, which always seems a bit harder to find – especially collected together in sets like this for the English-speaking world. And while we totally love the French sets from Ace Records, we almost dig this one even more – as the whole thing's so fresh, so groovy that each new tune is a real delight – as bold orchestrations mix with mod rhythms, rockish instrumentation, and some totally cool Italian lyrics sung by a batch of female singers who've definitely got us already digging for more. Titles include "Baluba Shake" by Brunetta E I Suoi Balubas, "Il Mio Posto Quale" by Ornella Vanoni, "Sono Qui Con Voi by Caterina Caselli, "Un Amore Inutile" by Isabella Ianetti, "La Notte E Fatta Per Rubare" by Catherine Spaak, "Il Geghege" by Rita Pavone, "Ragazzo Triste" by Patty Pravo, "Se Telefonando" by Mina, and "Questa Sinfona" by Carmen Villani. We're really stunned by the set – as we had no idea at all that Belize had anything going on at this level – and the collection is an amazing surprise to our ears, filled with new delights at each turn, and clearly marking Belize as a new funky capitol on our ever-expanding map of musical understanding. Numero really outdid themselves with this package – going far beyond their already-great collections of work from the Bandit and Capsoul labels – to dig up a range of tracks that have never really made it out to the world at large, but which bubble over with influences from American funk and soul at the time. Capitol, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost gem from Brian Wilson's dad! As the cover says, "The talented father of the famous Beach Boys presents instrumental interpretations of his and other compositions." Basically, Murry was getting the squeeze from Brian, and this was Murry's way of saying "hey, I can do complicated baroque sort of arrangements too!" Funny thing is, despite the conflict he and Brian were having, the album's actually pretty great – and about halfway between Pet Sounds and an LA hip easy sort of approach. Of course, half of the credit goes to Don Ralke, who arranged and conducted the set – and probably gets more of Brian's feel down than his dad ever could. Titles include "Leaves", "The Plumber's Tune", "Love Won't Wait", "The Happy Song", "Betty's Waltz", "Painting With Teardrops", and a pretty nice version of "Warmth Of The Sun". ✨✧ Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD

The notes are great, and the booklet's got plenty of excellent images to back up the writings – but the music is the real star of the set, and is presented on 16 tracks that include "More Love Reggae" and "Boogaloo A La Chuck" by Lord Rhaburn, "Theme From The Godfather" and "Backstabbers" by The Professionals, "Can't Go Halfway" and "Shame Shame Shame" by The Harmonettes, "Things Are Going To Work Out Right" and "Rated G" by The Web, "Funky Jive (parts 1& 2)" by Soul Creations, and "Long Time Boy" by Nadia Cattouse. LP also features 2 bonus tracks not on the CD – "Soul Brother" by Lord Rahburn and "I Hear You Calling" by Francis Reneau Singers. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Descendants Of Mike & PhoebeSpirit Speaks (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have a undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan – plus "Chick Chick", "Attica", "Too Little, Too Late", "Boll Weevil", "Don't Be A Stranger", and "Well Done, Weldon". Elektra, 1978. Very Good+ ... $0.99
Acoustic duets between Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine – recorded with a style that's much more intimate and personal than some of the previous recordings by either player! Although Coryell first rose to fame at the end of the 60s with his fuzzy approach to jazz fusion, he's clearly mellowed here nicely with age – and has a nice sense of space and color, that's only further augmented by Catherine's always-great range of sounds and styles. Joachim Kuhn plays acoustic piano on one track, but all other information is from both players on 6 and 12 string acoustic guitars, plus a bit of work by Catherine on a fretless electric. Titles include "No More Booze", "Deux Xango", "Snowshadows", "One Plus Two Blues", "Father Christmas", "A Quiet Day In Spring", and "The Train & The River". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sahib ShihabSahib Shihab & All Those Cats ... LP
Rearward/Schema (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although reed player Sahib Shihab made a few records in the US in the late 50's, it wasn't until he moved to Europe and started hanging out with the likes of the Clarke-Boland Big Band that his talents really started to flower. This cool new LP brings together 15 small-combo recordings made by Shihab and other members of the CBBB (like Fats Sadi, Benny Bailey, Francy Boland, and Jimmy Woode) during the mid 60's. All the material was recorded by CBBB manager/producer Gigi Campi, and none of the stuff's been issued before as far as we can tell. The groove is nice and swinging, with excellent rolling grooves by Sadi on bongos and vibes. Shihab plays both flute and baritone, and the set swings with the same sort of modal groove as the best Saba/MPS recordings from the time. Cuts include "Campi's Idea", "Dijdar", "Companionship (I + II)", "Peter's Waltz", "Om Mani Padme Hum", and "Herr Fixit". As with the other titles in this series, the music's accompanied by a great package, with loads of excellent photos, good notes, and stellar sound quality. This is the kind of stuff we collect jazz for, and it's great to have it in stock at a nice low price! LP, Vinyl record album

Louis Armstrong hits the Flying Dutchman label – and unlocks a whole new spiritual side of his talents – a mode that's quite different than some of his crossover pop of the 60s! The style here has a bit of righteous elements in the lyrics, and lots of spiritual jazz in the backings – with full arrangements from Oliver Nelson – who heads up a dream lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor, and either Chico Hamilton or Pretty Purdie on drums! Even more amazing is a guest appearance from Leon Thomas – who sings on a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Other tunes are just as hip – and include "The Black Cat Has 9 Lives", "His Father Wore Long Hair", "Give Peace A Chance", and "We Shall Overcome". Must be heard to be believed! CD

Garland GreenVery Best Of Garland Green – 24 Tracks From Chicago's Master Soul Singer's Illustrious Career ... CD
Kent (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A windy city hero – the amazing Garland Green, a singer who makes us mighty proud we hail from Chicago! Garland's got an incredible style that few others can touch – partly schooled in the 60s iceman modes of Jerry Butler and Walter Jackson, with all the sophistication that might imply – but also often given a raspier twist, with slightly southern echoes that make Garland's music feel even more deeply personal! And while most folks know Green's big hits for the Uni label, this package shows a rich legacy that goes much father than that – work recorded for labels that include Cotillion, Spring, RCA, Ocean Front, and Revue – in addition to some key Uni tracks. This trans-label set really does a wonderful job of showing the full range of Garland's mighty talents – a sublime set of soul cuts that run from the start of the 70s right up to the early 80s modern years – packaged with detailed notes too. Titles include "Since You've Been Gone", "These Arms", "Just Loving You", "Just My Way Of Loving You", "He Didn't Know", "Don't Think That I'm A Violent Guy", "Love's Calling", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", "Sweet Loving Woman", "Ask Me What You Want", "You Played On A Player", "Don't Let Love Walk Out On Us", and "Sending My Best Wishes". Idle RaceBirthday Party (2CD version – mono/stereo with bonus tracks) ... CD
Parlophone/Grapefruit (UK), 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A classic album from Idle Race – an incredible pre-ELO, pre-Move group that featured some amazing work from a young Jeff Lynne! The music is a great mix of trippy and catchy styles – and in a way, the work here is almost more ELO than some of the earliest albums issued by that band a few years later – which was sometimes a bit heavier overall. Instead, Idle Race almost work in a 60s version of the pop-styled groove that Lynne would bring to ELO during their mighty mid 70s run – with a great flair for catchy hooks, and a style of production that was in the same flanged-out, cross-speaker compressed mode that would become the Jeff Lynne trademark in years to come (think especially "Mr Blue Sky" or "Diary Of Horace Wimp"). Titles include "On With The Show", "Sitting In My Tree", "I Like My Toys", "The Birthday", "The Skeleton & The Roundabout", "End Of The Road", and "The Lady Who Said She Could Fly". Great 2CD pressing – with the full 13 track album in both stereo and mono – plus bonus material that includes "Here We Go Round The Lemon Tree", "My Father's Son", "Imposers Of Life's Magazine", "Sitting In My Tree (alt)", "Lucky Man (alt)", "Days Of The Broken Arrows", "Worn Red Carpet", and "Follow Me Follow (alt)". RCA/P&C, 1973. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A great little album from Pat Lundy – an enigmatic talent who crops up a number of times over the years – but always on different record labels, and always with a slightly different sound and style! This album's one of Pat's best – and has her working in a sophisticated soul style that's a lot like Marlena Shaw, with but some deep soul undercurrents too – a really great blend that was way ahead of its time when first issued back in 1973 – and a set that's still unlike most other records we can think of! Burt Keyes handles the arrangements, and he gives the whole thing a great sense of class right from the start – but also knows how to hit some funkier moments too, which really let Lundy unlock the bolder side of her vocals. Titles include "Only Love Spoken Here", "What Is Love", "Friend Of Mine", "Love Child", "He's The Father Of My Children", "No More Tears To Cry", and "I've Never Been A Woman Before". CD

Paul MauriatNoel (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Vocalion (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $18.99
A rare Christmas album from French maestro Paul Mauriat – presented with a style that's maybe a bit more lush and scented with the season than some of his other albums of the time! The strings are a bit fuller, and the rhythms more laidback – so that the overall vibe is more in the best Christmas orchestral mode of the 60s – and a bit less like some of Mauriat's famous instrumental pop. Still, the approach is a nice one for those late hours after the party – when the fire's still going in the fireplace, and you're sitting around with the last few visitors enjoying a nightcap. Titles include "Rin Rin", "Among The Cattle & Grey Donkey", "Adeste Fideles", "Silent Night"," White Christmas", and "Little Father Christmas". CD also features 7 more Christmas tunes – including "Alle Jahre Wider", "Liese Riselt Der Schnee", "For Never & Always", and "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer". CD

Killer instrumental funk from the mighty Oliver Sain – one of the hippest cats to ever work the St Louis scene! The package features most of the best cuts from Sain's years at Abet Records, plus some tasty indie moments too – a really tremendous assortment of his sax-heavy grooves, brought together in a package that's overstuffed with greatness! Styles range from heavy funk to some of the more boogie-oriented styles that Sain did later in the 70s – and they've all got a mighty sharp edge, and lots of soul sax work that easily rivals the best that King Curtis, Joe Thomas, or other ebony godfathers had to offer. Titles include the massive sample cut "On The Hill" – plus "St Louis Breakdown", "Comin Down Soul", "Feel Like Dancin", "African Walk", "The Prayer", "Country Funk", "Night Time", "Mr King & Mr Jordan", "20-75", "Strollin", "Party Hearty", "Booty Bumpin", "Soul Serenade", "Scratch My Back", "London Express", and "Going Back To Memphis". ✨✧ Sahib ShihabCompanionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 ... LP
Vogue (Germany), Late 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $99.99
Double-length brilliance from the mighty Sahib Shihab – a set that collects a number of killer 60s sessions with members of the Clarke Boland Big Band – all of them great! The small combo work here is amazing – hard-hitting modal jazz that matches, if not tops the best MPS/Saba sounds of the time – all produced to perfection with a really sharp edge, and a cutting approach to jazz that's gone onto inspired countless others in the current scene – including artists on Schema and Ricky-Tick Records, as well as most Japanese club jazz combos! But long before any of those cats started copping his groove, Sahib Shihab had it all totally together – a great ear for his own amazing solos on baritone and flute, and a way of hooking up with players like Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Benny Bailey on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. All players here were Shihab's partners in the Clarke Boland Big Band, and they use these small combo sessions to explore some great new ideas – stripped-down groovers that are heavy on rhythm, and really allow full expression from all the players involved. Titles include "Companionship", "Om Mani Padme Hum", "Bohemia After Dark", "Serenata", "Yah Yah Blues", "Balafon", "Talk Some Yak-ee Dak", "The Turk's Bolero", "CT + CB", "Jay Jay", "Stoned Ghosts", "Just Give Me Time", and "Dijdar". A long-overdue collection of the wealth of work that Carla Thomas did for Stax Records in the 60s – the wonderfully rich first section of her career, when the label was working in strong partnership with Atlantic Records! Carla's the daughter of Memphis soul legend Rufus Thomas – who first brought her to Stax, and helped launch her career – yet right from the start, it was clear that the younger Thomas was a star waiting to shine on her own – one of the first deep soul divas of the 60s to also showcase a strength for more sophisticated styles too – a bit like the blend that Aretha Franklin was recording at Columbia before moving to Atlantic – territory that Carla Thomas clearly held first in the heart of the label! The box brings together 94 tracks in all – a huge amount of Stax material, including all her duets with Otis Redding and Rufus Thomas – plus singles and b-sides too – all with a great presentation and a huge booklet of notes. Titles include "Let Me Be Good To You (live)", "Let It Be Me", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "What Have You Got To Offer Me", "Never Let You Go", "It Takes Two", "Knock On Wood", "Fate", "Looking Back", "For You", "I Didn't Believe", "The Puppet", "What A Fool I've Been", "The Life I Live", "I Fall To Pieces", "Winter Snow", "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby", "No Time To Lose", "How Do You Quit", and lots lots more! If you don't know Thomas' own work, you might recognize him as the vocalist on some of Pharoah Sanders' great recordings, like "The Creator Has A Master Plan" and "Hum Allah Hum Allah". This beautifully packaged 2 LP set includes a bunch of tracks from his long out-of-print LPs on the Flying Dutchman label, plus tracks from other records in the 70's that he made appearances on, for a dozen cuts in all. The tracks are very well selected, and show the best side of Leon's soulful jazz style, with an emphasis on his more spiritual nature. Tracks include "Sun Song", "Balance Of Life", "Shape Your Mind To Die", "It's My Life I'm Fighting For", "Song For My Father", "Prince Of Peace", and a version of "The Creator Has a Master Plan". Polydor/Jackpot, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
One of the stranger pairings of artists to ever appear on record during the 80s – but maybe that's no surprise, as Dune was also one of the stranger films of the decade! Toto seems like an odd choice for a movie directed by David Lynch – but in their own sort of way, they do a pretty decent job on their own tracks here – catchy numbers that were probably used by the studio to try to make a bit more sense of the narrative – and things are balanced out a bit by one contribution from Brian Eno, the nice "Prophecy Theme" in the film. Verve, 1967. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". King/Gusto, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... $4.99
Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the postwar R&B market, and a company who wasn't afraid to do what it took to make a knockout record! In the case of these tracks, the singers often hit some fairly suggestive material – often hidden in early 50s innuendo, but barely so – with a vibe that's often nastier than even the most hardcore rockabilly sounds to come! The music here has its roots in blues, but is inflected with plenty of jazz, and the presence of the singers often point the way towards soul music – especially the James Brown crowd that would later rise at the same label. Titles on this volume include "It Ain't The Meat" by The Swallows, "Salty Dog" by The Lamplighters, "Ride Daddy Ride" by Orvill Fats Noel, "The Walkin Blues" by Fluffy Hunter, "I Knew He Would" by The Sharps & Flats, "Wasn't That Good" by Wynonie Harris, "Shake That Thing" by Wynonie Harris, and "Roll Roll Pretty Baby" by The Swallows. Sweet and smooth 70s soul – hand-picked with a freshness that should appeal to folks who found these sounds through the hip hop that these grooves laid the sonic groundwork for. Desco/Daptone, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning return to form by Lee Fields, one of the 70s' lost funky geniuses – heard here in the initial set that would catapult him back in the spotlight for a whole new generation! The record was issued by Desco Records – the key precursor to Daptone, Soul Fire, and other modern funk imprints – and it's got a sound that feels like was lifted from the vaults of James Brown's People label, circa 1972! Unlike other "funk revival" titles of the 90s (especially those by ex-JBs Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker), this one's got a totally perfect sound, and was produced with a loving adherence to the classic 70ss funk sound that made Lee' early records so great – raw vocals, mixed with equally sharp instrumentation – all put together with help from Bosco Mann, Gabriel Roth, and Philippe Lehman – the latter two of whom had been bootlegging older funk records, but were finally ready to try their hand at something of their own. The instrumentation is a tight batch of drum-heavy, bass-heavy, break-heavy grooves – and Lee's voice is incredibly rich and soulful, approaching near-Godfather-like sensibilities! We love this one to death, and it's probably the most perfectly-formed album that Desco ever issued. Titles include "Bad, Bad, Bad", "Let's Get A Groove On", "Watch That Man", "Put It On Me", and "Steam Train". Great great great – and a real smoker! LP, Vinyl record album

Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Guests include Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, RZA, Lord Finesse, AG, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay, Qbert, Mike Patton, Casual, Hieroglyphics, Grand Wizard Theodore, El-P, John Oates, Pharrell, Kid Koala, and George W. Damn wonderful solo work from Chaka Khan – a record that holds onto all the best funky elements of her 70s music with Rufus – but also finds a way to put the lady even more strongly out front! There's maybe a bit more of a clubby vibe here than before, but never in a cheesy or commercial way – as the mighty Arif Mardin is at the production helm, and arguably does an even better job with Chaka than on his classic productions for Aretha Franklin! The vocals soar out beautifully, but the grooves are every bit as great – with these warm jazzy touches that make the album instantly seductive – and a level of sophistication that's kept this one strong for many many years. Titles include the wonderful stepper "Any Old Sunday", plus "We Got Each Other", "We Can Work It Out", "Night Moods", "What Cha Gonna Do For Me", and "Father He Said" – plus "I Know You, I Live You", a big Chicago house cut from the old days. Dead Oceans, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Khruangbin – a group with a name that's hard to pronounce, but who just keep getting better and better with each new release – to the point where on this record, they're definitely in a genre by themselves! Khruangbin blend together lean funky instrumentation with some slightly more progressive elements – never too jamming to get in the way of the groove, but with a complexity that shows us that these guys are really amazing musicians – steeped in the best influences from the past, but never copycats at all – and always with a very original sound! The core trio is expanded just slightly here on a few tracks – with the spare addition of elements like vibes, percussion, or pedal steel – each used sparingly, but to create some great sonic colors in the mix. Titles include "First Class", "Pelota", "Dearest Alfred", "If There Is No Question", "One To Remember", "So We Won't Forget", "Shida", and "Father Bird Mother Bird". CD

✨✧ Sahib ShihabCompanionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
✨✧ Peoples ChoiceStrikin ... LP
Mercury, 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of Mercury soul from Peoples Choice – served up in a style that's quite different than the group's earlier work! The combo have dropped the apostrophe from the "Peoples" in their name – perhaps indicating that they're moving more under their own direction, and less aimed at a populist aesthetic – but the overall sound is a great blend of mellow 80s soul with some more uptempo groovers – almost a bit like some of the best Fatback albums of the same period. The mellower cuts are especially nice, and showcase great vocals from Marc Reed – and although some of the instrumentation has an 80s electric sound, there's also still a fair bit of acoustic elements in the mix, especially on piano. Titles include "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love", "Young Wings Can Fly", "No One Can Love You More", "Hands In The Fire", "Mr Rhythm Man", and "Strikin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a promo stamp, light wear, and hype sticker.)

✨✧ Camille YarbroughIron Pot Cooker (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Vanguard/Craft, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of THE spoken word classics of the 70s funk years – an amazing album based around the poetry of Camille Yarbrough – set to some amazing funky backings! The sound here is incredibly righteous – almost a more sophisticated version of Betty Davis – done with a stark, spare groove that makes the bass bits and drums really come out in the mix! Camille's got a heck of a lot of personal vision, and really works the album together as a whole – making for a set that's far more than just "poetry plus music" – and instead an audio tapestry with an incredibly deep sound! Includes a heavy rap on the streets that culminates in the great "Little Sally the Super Sex Star" – plus the classic "Take Yo Praise", which was sampled famously by Fatboy Slim – and the cuts "Can I Get A Witness" and "All Hid". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited 180 gram pressing – in a great tip-on jacket!)

✨✧ John ScofieldSteady Groovin' – The Blue Note Groove Sides ... CD
Blue Note, Late 90s. Used ... Out Of Stock
In one of the more surprising turns of the 90s, guitarist John Scofield has emerged as one of the better funky players of his generation. Scofield never set out to blow anyone's mind as a funkster – but recent underground live sets with groups like Medeski Martin & Wood and Soulive have proved to audiences that he's really picked up a groove – and scattered performances on Blue Note recordings of the past few years have showed him to be equally funky on CD. This 11 track set collects the best of these groove-oriented performances by Scofield, creating one funky CD out of scattered tracks from other albums. Titles include "Camp Out", "Kool", "Do Like Eddie", "Fat Lip", "Big Top", and "Twang". CD

✨✧ James Taylor QuartetDo Your Own Thing ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal album in the career of British organist James Taylor – and a great one! The record has James breaking past the standard soul jazz format of some of his earlier albums – into a more complicated jazz funk sound that's infused with the spacious 70s grooves of Johnny Hammond, and some of the more sophisticated R&B production that was coming out of England at the time, from groups like Soul II Soul and Brand New Heavies. Noel McKoy sings lead vocals on a number of tracks, and a bunch more are excellent funky instrumentals with a great 70s sound. Titles include "Oscar", "The Money", "JTQ Theme", "Samba For Bill & Ben", "Fat", "Peace Song", and "Love The Life". CD
(Out of print, 1995 Japanese pressing – includes obi.)
