BrownoutBerlin Sessions ... CD
Fat Beats, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
Brownout sound heavier than ever here – recording in Texas, not Berlin (that's the last name of the producer) – and with a fantastic blend of deep funk, Latin elements, and lots of psychedelic touches! In fact, there may be more of that last aspect here than ever before – possibly because the guitar lines of Adrian Quesada get lots of strong placement in the mix – but also because the percussion, vocals, and other acoustic elements are all fused together in the mix in a really great way – this kind of wide wash of sound that's nice and dirty at all the right moments. Titles include "Seamus", "Nain", "Somewhere To Go", "Upon This Rock", "You've Got To Change", "Brownie", "Hold Your Way", "In Between", and "After November". CD

Nice and gritty material from a bicoastal indie hip hop supergroup – LA rap veteran Rass Kass, NY's El Gant and producer J57 – and you know this is pedigreed crew when they get top notch guests like DJ Premier and Slug from midwest heroes Atomosphere on board! Solid, trend-skirting, classic gritty boom bap inspired stuff. ✨✧ Fat Jon The Ample Soul PhysicianWave Motion (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Young Heavy Souls, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An early classic solo jam from Fat Jon – one of our favorite underground hip hop beat wizards in the immediate post millennium – and a more than ample effort that still sounds great today! Combining his Dyslexic and Stasis EPs, it features a trademark batch Fat Jon's chilled out hip hop excursions into the realm of jazzy tone science. The beats here are fairly straight forward and snap nicely to keep it in head nodding territory, but his signature atmospheric production style is still floating nicely over the filtered basslines and crisp drum loops. Includes "Where?", "Feel The Void", "Visual Music", "For Stress", 'Wet Secrets", "Automated Life Machines" and "Surrection". 2019 version includes a couple extra tracks: "Trust You" and "Rain Dance Instrumental". Freddie Gibbs's gradual ascent to the upper echelon of modern hip hop – and his impeccable choice in production partners, this time working from beginning to end with long serving beat king The Alchemist – shows no signs of slowing down! Lyrically, Freddie is riffing on mob lore on Alfredo, and true to form, he has the agile mic flow and dizzying way of writing rhymes that no one could spit like he does, and Alc does a great job of riffing in the tried-and-true mafia movie sample style in ways that surprisingly fresh, and as always, his moody beats are on point. Mercury, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The early 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D! Along with Showbiz and AG's first EP, and Lord Finesse's first couple releases, this record helped introduce the world to one of the most solid crews in hip hop, DITC – who reigned supreme for years, making top quality records one after another. The classic and oft-imitated Diamond beats laid the blueprint for so much hip hop to follow – and the titles include "Sally Got A One Track Mind," "Best Kept Secret," "I'm Outta Here," "Check One, Two", "Freestyle (Yo That's The Sh..)" and more! ✨✧ Jazz LiberatorzClin D'Oeil ... CD
Kif/P-Vine (Japan), 2007. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest French albums we've heard in years – a laidback blend of hip hop and jazz that really lives up to the cover's homage to the legendary Black Jazz label! The Jazz Liberatorz have a great way with a groove – a style that's openly flowing and instrumentally jazzy – a bit like the vibe we first came to love in Tribe Called Quest, but almost even better given that much of the instrumentation is played live! Most tracks have warm keyboards rolling along with the beats – and the rhythms are often gently acoustic in nature, with a depth of soul that sets these guys apart from most of their contemporaries. Guests on the record include J Sands, Lizz Fields, Sadat X, Apani B Fly, Fat Lip, and T Love – and titles include "Indonesia", "The Process", "Genius At Work", "I Am Hip Hop", "Ease My Mind", "Clin D'Oeil", "The Return", and "Speak The Language". Spring/Southbound (UK), 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Man, it must have been something to hear this record blasting out of a boombox back in the old days – especially if it was the magenta-hued one on the cover! The groove here is strong and loud – plenty of bass and beats at the bottom, and even a few surprising early electro touches that really stand out and make the album something special. And as with other records from this time, Fatback also show their ballad skills on one number – "Come & Get the Love" – but it's the more jamming tracks we really love, and they include "Street Band", "Hot Box", "Love Spell", "Gotta Get My Hands On Some Money", and the fat 80s jam "Backstrokin". Juju Rogers40 Acres N Sum Mula ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 23.98
Juju Rogers cut a pretty unique path on his debut album, and this might be even stronger! He has a unique perspective to draw from – born and raised in Germany with an African American GI father and a German mother, his voice and perspective in contemporary hip hop is fresh and distinctive by nature – but the craft is universally relatable. The beats and bass thump, there's nice use of live instrumentation on several tracks, and Juju's charismatic and forthright rhymes and sung vocals are really strong. Includes "89", "Real S**t", "Black Thursday", "Follow Me", "Mula", "10 Yas", "Identity", "God" & "Babalyon". LP, Vinyl record album

Daniel MaunickMacumba Quebrada ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2019. Used ... $4.99
The first-ever full length set we've seen from Daniel Maunick – an artist who you might know from his remix work as Venom, or for his ties to the Incognito universe – given that Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick is his father! Yet the sound here is definitely Daniel's own – rootsier than some of his remix work, but with the feature future-sounding elements of those tracks too – almost a globe's worth of sonic elements, fused with more contemporary keyboards and beats – providing a great bridge between some of the 12" releases of the Far Out label, and directions they might take in the future. The percussion on some tracks is especially nice – and maybe ties Daniel's music to some of the global house currents at the start of this century – on titles that include "Sombra Do Dragao", "Until The End", "A Vicious Circle", "One Nite Stand", "Red Doves", "Orbitus", "As Light Fades", and "Amnesia Haze". VariousAction – The Songs Of Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A killer tribute to the 60s songcraft of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart – who are probably best-known as the songwriters behind many songs by The Monkees – but they're terrific performers in their own right, on top of penning tunes for the creme of the 60s crop! This set goes a long way towards demonstrating their range. It's got all great songs by legendary groups and singers – including veterans like Fats Domino and Chubby Checker – who were seeking fresh heat at the time – plus great stuff by Boyce & Hart themselves, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Dino, Desi & Billy, The Shangri-Las, The Ikettes, The Standells, The Honeybeats and more! Includes "Valleri" by The Monkees, I Can't Get Him Out Of My Mind" by Sandra Dee, "(He's Gonna Be) Fine Fine Fine" by The Ikettes, "She" by Del Shannon, "Lazy Elsie Molly" by Chubby Checker, "Too Many Teardrops" by Bobby Hart, "Be My Guest" by Fats Domino, "Beverly Jean" by Curtis Lee and more. 26 in all. Manchester has got to be one of the hippest cities on earth – or at least it would seem that way, because the folks at the city's Fat City record shop keep turning out excellent funky compilations like this one! The set's like the best ones on the label in the past – a genre-blending mixture of hip hop, classic funk, and oddball grooves from unusual sources. All very well put together – with an eye for quality, and those elusive tunes that the blokes at Fat City always get asked for across the counter! Titles include "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More" by Richard McDonald, "Wild & Peaceful (Kenny Dope mix)" by Incognito, "The Spectacle (Mr Scruff rmx)" by Yam Yam, "Jerk Anthem" by Five Deez, "Sure Shot Goin On (Danmass 12" mix)" by Multiscreen, "Make Way For The Originals" by Izit, "I Can Break It Down" by Deadbeats, "Drop The Beat" by Martin Brew, "Underground Run" by People Under The Stairs, "Strollin" by Sunburst Band, and "Winterland" by Bamboo Soul. ✨✧ Santiago (Neftali Santiago)22 Somerset Drive – 1976 to 1978 ... CD
Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Titles include "Land Of The Leaping No No", "Feelin Good", "Bionic Funk", "Alone Together", "Freakin", "To & From Gamma 4", "Set It Free", "Let Out Your Beats", and "Everybody Hears But Nobody Listens". A wicked dip into the catalog of 70s powerhouse Mainstream Records – a set that brings together the funkiest tracks from the label – not just from their electric jazz albums, but also their more obscure funky 45s from the same time too! The package is a strong blend of jazz, funk, and soul – and alongside familiar breaks sampled from the Mainstream label, you'll also hear some funky nuggets that are long overdue for greater exposure – all laid out in a way that really gets at the diversity of the company's great ear for heavy grooves! Long tracks mix with shorter ones, in a way that really keeps things fresh – and titles include "TB's Delight" by Dave Hubbard, "Miss Fatback" by Saundra Phillips, "Kissing My Love" by Afrique, "These Memories" by Almeta Lattimore, "Mother McCree" by Reggie Moore, "Make It With You" by Maxine Weldon, "Blue's Blue" by Blue Mitchell, "Livin Way Too Fast" by December's Children, "This Moment" by Hal Galper, "Bird & The Ouija Board" by Pete Yellin, "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" by Jay Berliner, and "Just A Little Lovin" by Sarah Vaughan. James BrownI'm Real ... LP
Scotti Bros, 1998. Very Good+ ... $7.99
James Brown gets a new injection of life at the end of the 80s – thanks to a collaboration here with Full Force, who wrote, arranged, and produced the album! The groove here is often more in a Full Force mode than you might expect from James – a full-on 80s urban sound, filled with plenty of beats at the bottom, yet still allowing The Godfather plenty of space to do his thing vocally! In a way, the format's almost a bit like some of the James Brown remix work that was showing up around the same time – except that the tunes are all new, and somewhat different territory for James. Titles include "I'm Real", "Static (parts 1 & 2)", "You & Me", "Time To Get Busy", "She Looks All Types A Good", "Keep Keepin", and "Can't Git Enuf". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie FisherEddie Fisher & The Next One Hundred Years ... LP
Cadet, 1970. Very Good ... $19.99
Madly tripped out guitar funk – and a real turning point in the career of guitarist Eddie Fisher! Eddie began his career as a straighter guitarist on the St Louis scene – and although his first album for Cadet was a relatively traditional soul-jazz outing, this one's a wild batch of tripped-out guitar licks! The band's a fuzzy psychedelic one – not in a rock-styled way, but more in an early George Clinton kind of mode, with plenty of rumbling bass at the bottom, warm electric piano lines, nicely placed drum beats, and Eddie's fuzzbox guitar snaking and wah wah-ing over the top! Eddie arranged and produced, and the record's a perfect batch of kicked-back stoner funk numbers that go on and on and on and on! Titles include "Land Of Our Father", "Beautiful Things", "East St Louis Blues", "Another Episode", "Either Or", and "Jeremiah Pucket". LP, Vinyl record album

Jill ScottExperience – Jill Scott 826+ ... CD
Epic/Hidden Beach, 2001. Used 2 CDs ... $1.99
Ok so she's got a Grammy – but that makes us love her even more! Jill Scott is one of the greatest soul artists to emerge in the past decade – and this second album avoids the usual "sophomore slump" by showing a whole new side of her talents! Disc one is a great live set – showing that Jill's organic talent isn't the product of studio trickery, and can conjure up as much warmth in person as it can on disc. The backing is tight, jazzy, and with a different finish than you might be accustomed to from Jill's first LP – less hip hop beats and more real funk drumming, a fuller group instrumental sound with lots of nice solos, and over it all, incredible vocals from Jill! The set's got smoking live versions of "One Is The Magic #", "A Long Walk", "Love Rain", "Getting In The Way", "Fatback Taffy", "He Loves Me", and "Do You Remember". CD

Soulful reedman Tenderlonious plays flute this time around – but as always, it's the overall sound that makes the record so great – not just the solo bits on flute, but all the keyboards, basslines, and beats – stretched out in this cool 21st Century take on funky fusion! The music is jazz at the core, but more electrified too – with a straightforward funky groove on some numbers, and some more enigmatic modes on others – all a great blend of keyboards and flutes, which often share the same tonal range. Titles include "Dale's Corner", "Autumn Leaves", "Ghana", "Odeo Bushi", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "Song For My Father" – and the three tunes with familiar titles are actually originals by the man himself. ✨✧ VariousTim Peaks – Songs For A Late Nite Diner ... CD
Ace (UK), 1980s/1990s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's Tim Peaks, not Twin Peaks – although the cover image might make you think otherwise – and the set's a great entry into the long-running set of imagined "diner" jukeboxes from the team of Tim Burgess and Bob Stanley! Like other Ace compilations from the St Etienne team, this one has a completely unique sort of vibe – not as much the mix of older soul, rock, and vocal gems of the previous entries – and instead this beautifully moody mix of British music from the post-punk years and beyond – tunes that often move slowly, darkly, and with this stripped-down style that really creates a mood that's all its own! This is definitely one of those "must be heard to be appreciated" collections – and, like other Burgess/Stanley efforts, it's a great reminder of the sort of special mix of music that keeps the compilation format so strong in our hearts (and on our turntables!) Titles include "Choci Loni" by Young Marble Giants, "Yanks" by The Gist, "Sky Buriel" by Dean McPhee, "Sheila She Beats In My Heart" by The Fates, "Slow Motion" by Jane Weaver, "Betty's Lament" by Isan, "Hunros" by Gwenno, "House With A Hundred Rooms" by The Chills, "Lips That Would Kiss" by Durutti Column, "I Love You" by Royal Family & The Poor, "Dog" by El Perro Del Mar, "Blue Dress" by Birdie, "Flowers" by Galaxie 500, "Different Now" by Chastity Belt, "Fuel" by Echo & The Bunnymen, and "Fairy Tales (demo)" by Stockholm Monsters.
