Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99
A rock solid collaboration between classic boombap influenced veteran producer Marco Polo and legendary rhymer Masta Ace – a thoroughly headnodding full length ode to the borough of Brooklyn! As you'd guess, this instrumentals version leaves off the contributions from the Masta, and lets us focus on Polos beats and production – on titles that include "Get Shot", "Still Love Her", "Man Law", "You & I", "American Me", "The Fight Song", "Corporal Punishment", "Wanna Be", and "Sunken Place". Your Old DroogDump YOD – Krutoy Edition ... LP
Fat Beats, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $31.99 32.99
A pretty fantastic chapter in the career of one of the most unique MCs to emerge in recent years – the Ukraine-born Your Old Droog, spinning out tracks here that echo the struggles of his youth as an immigrant in Brooklyn! The set's got a very freewheeling vocal style – the quick-spun lines that you'd hear in some sort of freestyle battle, but formed into songs that work wonderfully well as a whole – often with production that's so lean, you almost think you're listening to acapellas! The set features guest work from Phonte, Mack Hommy, Black Thought, and others – and titles include "New Religion", "Ukraine", "Odessa", "Uzbekistan", "Pravda", and "Kazakhstan". ✨✧ BrownoutBerlin Sessions ... CD
Fat Beats, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Brownout sound heavier than ever here – recording in Texas, not Berlin (that's the last name of the producer) – and with a fantastic blend of deep funk, Latin elements, and lots of psychedelic touches! In fact, there may be more of that last aspect here than ever before – possibly because the guitar lines of Adrian Quesada get lots of strong placement in the mix – but also because the percussion, vocals, and other acoustic elements are all fused together in the mix in a really great way – this kind of wide wash of sound that's nice and dirty at all the right moments. Titles include "Seamus", "Nain", "Somewhere To Go", "Upon This Rock", "You've Got To Change", "Brownie", "Hold Your Way", "In Between", and "After November". CD

Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Brownout magic turns towards the world of Public Enemy this time around – in a sweet little record that serves up Latin funk instrumentals of PE classics! The music is hardly hip hop – apart from a few turntable scratches and vocal samples – and instead, the groove is deep deep funk, with plenty of Latin elements thrown into the mix – served up with a super-tight blast of horns, lots of riffing guitar, and plenty of heavy percussion! Titles include instrumental remakes of "911 Is A Joke", "Prophets Of Rage", "Fight The Power", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Shut Em Down", "Don't Believe The Hype", and "Welcome To The Terrordome". ✨✧ El Michels AffairEnter The 37th Chamber ... CD
Fat Beats, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Cinematic funky soul instrumentals from the El Michels Affair – the loose NYC collective's long awaited full length nod to the Wu Tang Clan! The crew brings their tried and true slow rolling and dirty funk to their interpretations of classic Wu Tang tracks, with some straight up beautiful sophisticated soul backdrops, too, and Leon & the crew pull it all off masterfully! The RZA's sonic stamp is too innovative and idiosyncratic for a simple live band rehash, and the group is wise to use the famous crackling sample built soundscapes to craft both an homage to the Wu Tang's best material, as well as the 70s funk, soul, and cinema sounds that informed them in the first place. A few of the tracks first blew our minds as funky 45s, and this fully formed set was worth the wait – from the moody organ funk of "Can It All Be So Simple", the funky drummer rhythms of "Uzi (Pinky Ring)", the string accented moods of "Heaven And Hell", the brass band and children's chorus cover of "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and lots more! Other tracks include "Glaciers Of Ice", "Incarcerated Scarfaces", "Bring Da Ruckus" and more. The CD version includes an unlisted bonus track. CD

Fat Beats, 2010. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The solo debut of Roc Marciano, and a record that more than shows the MC can stand on his own – serving up edgy rhymes over beats that show a strong NYC tradition – often spare and lean in construction, but with compelling core elements that continue that tradition started by Wu-Tang so many years ago! The whole thing almost feels more 90s than you'd guess from its date of release – and we mean that as a complement – as Roc steps out amidst tracks that include "It's A Crime", "Whateva Whateva", "Raw Deal", "We Do It", "Snow", "Ridin Around", "Panic", "Thug's Prayer", "Marcberg", "Hide My Tears", and "Jungle Fever". Fat Beats, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tight modern funk from Detroit funk troop Will Sessions – compiling their great pair of Mix Takes EPs, previously vinyl-only, together on CD for the first time! The group covers and reinterprets classic funky soul instrumental tracks as well as timeless hip hop cuts with a seamless flow in each track – in the mode of mixtape or breakbeat comp. It's excellent stuff, done with a live and direct feel. While paying tribute to classic breakbeat funk, they give it a fresh urgency, also making a strong case for themselves as the some of the finest funk revivalists in the game. 4 longish untitled suites, each taking a full side on the vinyl versions – and it features guest appearances by McKinley Jackson and Dennis Coffey! Ample Soul, 2021. New Copy ... $19.99
Spare sounds from Fat Jon, but nicely full as well – with more than enough depth to live up to the "ample soul physician" part of his name! Most of the tracks have a relatively straightforward instrumental vibe – a few key elements, but used with a nice sense of juxtaposition – not really counterpoint, but creating a lot more than you might expect through the balancing of keyboards and beats, classic 70s riffs and rhythms, and some nice use of wider scope on the production. Titles include "Only Friend", "Insert Thoughts Here", "Story Time With The Deez", "Lick My Burden", "Life Goes Swing", "Gamma Ray", "Endure The Truth", and "Unknown's Flow". LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury/Get On Down, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $23.99 27.98
A 90s hip hop masterpiece from Diamond D – and like some of the rest of the best of the decade, a set that was slightly slept-on at the time, but which has gone to have massive impact over the decades – still sounding completely fresh in comparison to bigger hits of the time! Diamond D comes from the same DITC underground as Showbiz & AG, Big L, and Lord Finesse – and like those others, when he got his time in the spotlight, he really took off – with beats that had an influence on so much more to come – and a very collaborative spirit that opens the door for contributions from Fat Joe, Mark The 45 King, Brand Nubian, Lakim Shabazz, and some of his old partners in DITC. Titles include the classic "Best Kept Secret" – with its fantastic Kool & The Gang sample – plus "Sally Got A One Track Mind", "I'm Outta Here," "Check One Two", "Freestyle", "Stunts Blunts & Hip Hop", "Pass Dat S**t", "What You Seek", "Confused", "A Day In The Life", "Step To Me", and "Shut The *!*! ✨✧ Fatback BandLet's Do It Again ... CD
Deep Beats (UK), 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A key classic from the earliest years of the Fatback Band – one of the group's funkiest albums, and part of their original trilogy for the Perception label! The groove here is mighty raw throughout – but a bit more complicated than some of their funky 45 releases – a mixture of funky vamps and some more soul-styled tunes – showing the group evolving a bit from the start, yet still losing none of their funky edge – sounding surprisingly nice on a few of the album's mellower instrumentals. Titles include the massive "Goin' To See My Baby", with a classic break on the intro – plus "Street Dance", "Free Form", "Give Me One More Chance", "Green Green Grass Of Home", "Baby I'm A Want You", and "Take a Ride (On The Soul Train)". Juju Rogers40 Acres N Sum Mula ... LP
Jakarta (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 23.98
Juju Rogers cut a pretty unique path on his debut album, and this might be even stronger! He has a unique perspective to draw from – born and raised in Germany with an African American GI father and a German mother, his voice and perspective in contemporary hip hop is fresh and distinctive by nature – but the craft is universally relatable. The beats and bass thump, there's nice use of live instrumentation on several tracks, and Juju's charismatic and forthright rhymes and sung vocals are really strong. Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A killer tribute to the 60s songcraft of Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart – who are probably best-known as the songwriters behind many songs by The Monkees – but they're terrific performers in their own right, on top of penning tunes for the creme of the 60s crop! This set goes a long way towards demonstrating their range. It's got all great songs by legendary groups and singers – including veterans like Fats Domino and Chubby Checker – who were seeking fresh heat at the time – plus great stuff by Boyce & Hart themselves, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Dino, Desi & Billy, The Shangri-Las, The Ikettes, The Standells, The Honeybeats and more! Includes "Valleri" by The Monkees, I Can't Get Him Out Of My Mind" by Sandra Dee, "(He's Gonna Be) Fine Fine Fine" by The Ikettes, "She" by Del Shannon, "Lazy Elsie Molly" by Chubby Checker, "Too Many Teardrops" by Bobby Hart, "Be My Guest" by Fats Domino, "Beverly Jean" by Curtis Lee and more. 26 in all. Manchester has got to be one of the hippest cities on earth – or at least it would seem that way, because the folks at the city's Fat City record shop keep turning out excellent funky compilations like this one! The set's like the best ones on the label in the past – a genre-blending mixture of hip hop, classic funk, and oddball grooves from unusual sources. All very well put together – with an eye for quality, and those elusive tunes that the blokes at Fat City always get asked for across the counter! Hazy beatcraft steeped in Indian soundtrack style funk, strings and percussion from the indefatigable Madlib – Volume 3 in the increasingly adventurous and conceptual outings of the Beat Konducta! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Masterful! ✨✧ Santiago (Neftali Santiago)22 Somerset Drive – 1976 to 1978 ... CD
Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Titles include "Land Of The Leaping No No", "Feelin Good", "Bionic Funk", "Alone Together", "Freakin", "To & From Gamma 4", "Set It Free", "Let Out Your Beats", and "Everybody Hears But Nobody Listens". Far Out (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length set we've seen from Daniel Maunick – an artist who you might know from his remix work as Venom, or for his ties to the Incognito universe – given that Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick is his father! Yet the sound here is definitely Daniel's own – rootsier than some of his remix work, but with the feature future-sounding elements of those tracks too – almost a globe's worth of sonic elements, fused with more contemporary keyboards and beats – providing a great bridge between some of the 12" releases of the Far Out label, and directions they might take in the future. The percussion on some tracks is especially nice – and maybe ties Daniel's music to some of the global house currents at the start of this century – on titles that include "Sombra Do Dragao", "Until The End", "A Vicious Circle", "One Nite Stand", "Red Doves", "Orbitus", "As Light Fades", and "Amnesia Haze". Soulful reedman Tenderlonious plays flute this time around – but as always, it's the overall sound that makes the record so great – not just the solo bits on flute, but all the keyboards, basslines, and beats – stretched out in this cool 21st Century take on funky fusion! The music is jazz at the core, but more electrified too – with a straightforward funky groove on some numbers, and some more enigmatic modes on others – all a great blend of keyboards and flutes, which often share the same tonal range. VariousTim Peaks – Songs For A Late Nite Diner ... CD
Ace (UK), 1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
That's Tim Peaks, not Twin Peaks – although the cover image might make you think otherwise – and the set's a great entry into the long-running set of imagined "diner" jukeboxes from the team of Tim Burgess and Bob Stanley! Like other Ace compilations from the St Etienne team, this one has a completely unique sort of vibe – not as much the mix of older soul, rock, and vocal gems of the previous entries – and instead this beautifully moody mix of British music from the post-punk years and beyond – tunes that often move slowly, darkly, and with this stripped-down style that really creates a mood that's all its own! This is definitely one of those "must be heard to be appreciated" collections – and, like other Burgess/Stanley efforts, it's a great reminder of the sort of special mix of music that keeps the compilation format so strong in our hearts (and on our turntables!) Titles include "Choci Loni" by Young Marble Giants, "Yanks" by The Gist, "Sky Buriel" by Dean McPhee, "Sheila She Beats In My Heart" by The Fates, "Slow Motion" by Jane Weaver, "Betty's Lament" by Isan, "Hunros" by Gwenno, "House With A Hundred Rooms" by The Chills, "Lips That Would Kiss" by Durutti Column, "I Love You" by Royal Family & The Poor, "Dog" by El Perro Del Mar, "Blue Dress" by Birdie, "Flowers" by Galaxie 500, "Different Now" by Chastity Belt, "Fuel" by Echo & The Bunnymen, and "Fairy Tales (demo)" by Stockholm Monsters. ✨✧ Handsome Boy Modeling SchoolWhite People ... CD
Atlantic, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Guests include Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, RZA, Lord Finesse, AG, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay, Qbert, Mike Patton, Casual, Hieroglyphics, Grand Wizard Theodore, El-P, John Oates, Pharrell, Kid Koala, and George W. Bush (just kidding). Tracks include "If It Wasn't For You" with De La, "Are You Down With It" with Mike Patton, "The World's Gone Mad" with Del and others, "It's Like That" with Casual, "I've Been Thinking" with Cat Power, "Rock And Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) Pt 2" featuring Lord Finesse, Qbert and others, First. . .And Then" featuring Dres from Black Ship, "A Day In The Life" featuring RZA, AZ and others and more, plus intro/outro by Father Guido Sarducci.
